We recast the well known Israel-Darmois matching conditions for Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS-II) spacetimes using the semitetrad 1+1+2 covariant formalism. This demonstrates how the geometrical quantities including the volume expansion, spacetime shear, acceleration and Weyl curvature of two different spacetimes are related at a general matching surface inheriting the symmetry, which can be timelike or spacelike. The approach is purely geometrical and depends on matching the Gaussian curvature of 2-dimensional sheets at the matching hypersurface. This also provides the constraints on the thermodynamic quantities on each spacetime so that they can be matched smoothly across the surface. As an example we regain the Santos boundary conditions and model of a radiating star matched to a Vaidya exterior in general relativity.
Rotating and twisting locally rotationally symmetric imperfect fluids in general relativity admit a much larger set of solutions than the self-similar ones recently suggested in the literature. Explicit forms of the metrics are given and the self-similar sub-cases are discussed.
Matter collineations of locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes are considered. These are investigated when the energy-momentum tensor is degenerate. We know that the degenerate case provides infinite dimensional matter collineations in most of the cases. However, an interesting case arises where we obtain proper matter collineations. We also solve the constraint equations for a particular case to obtain some cosmological models.
A brief summary of results on kinematic self-similarities in general relativity is given. Attention is focussed on locally rotationally symmetric models admitting kinematic self-similar vectors. Coordinate expressions for the metric and the kinematic self-similar vector are provided. Einstein's field equations for perfect fluid models are investigated and all the homothetic perfect fluid solutions admitting a maximal four-parameter group of isometries are given.
This paper is devoted to find the Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) vacuum solutions in the context of f(R) theory of gravity. Actually, we have considered the three metrics representing the whole family of LRS spacetimes and solved the field equations by using metric approach as well as the assumption of constant scalar curvature. It is mention here that R may be zero or non-zero. In all we found 10 different solutions.
In this paper we investigate conformal symmetries in Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) spacetimes using a semitetrad covariant formalism. We demonstrate that a general LRS spacetime which rotates and spatially twists simultaneously has an inherent homothetic symmetry in the plane spanned by the fluid flow lines and the preferred spatial direction. We discuss the nature and consequence of this homothetic symmetry showing that a null Killing horizon arises when the heat flux has an extremal value. We also consider the special case of a perfect fluid and the restriction on the conformal geomet…
Einstein's field equations for spatially self-similar locally rotationally symmetric perfect fluid models are investigated. The field equations are rewritten as a first order system of autonomous ordinary differential equations. Dimensionless variables are chosen in such a way that the number of equations in the coupled system of differential equations is reduced as far as possible. The system is subsequently analyzed qualitatively for some of the models. The nature of the singularities occurring in the models is discussed.
We study scalar field and electromagnetic perturbations on Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) class II spacetimes, exploiting a recently developed covariant and gauge-invariant perturbation formalism. From the Klein-Gordon equation and Maxwell's equations, respectively, we derive covariant and gauge-invariant wave equations for the perturbation variables and thereby find the generalised Regge-Wheeler equations for these LRS class II spacetime perturbations. As illustrative examples, the results are discussed in detail for the Schwarzschild and Vaidya spacetime, and briefly for some classes o…
We present a method that yields three decoupled covariant equations for three complex scalars, which completely govern electromagnetic perturbations of non-vacuum, locally rotationally symmetric class II spacetimes. One of these equations is equivalent to the previously established generalized Regge-Wheeler equation for electromagnetic fields. The remaining two equations are a direct generalization of the Bardeen-Press equations. The approach undertaken makes use of the well established 3+1 (and 2+1+1) formalism, and therefore, it is an ideal setting for specifying interpretable energy-momentu…

A new method is presented for the determination of Ricci Collineations (RC) and Matter Collineations (MC) of a given spacetime, in the cases where the Ricci tensor and the energy momentum tensor are non-degenerate and have a similar form with the metric. This method reduces the problem of finding the RCs and the MCs to that of determining the KVs whereas at the same time uses already known results on the motions of the metric. We employ this method to determine all hypersurface homogeneous locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes, which admit proper RCs and MCs. We also give the corresponding…
We show that there are no new consistent cosmological perfect fluid solutions when in an open neighbourhood ${\cal U}$ of an event the fluid kinematical variables and the electric and magnetic Weyl curvature are all assumed rotationally symmetric about a common spatial axis, specialising the Weyl curvature tensor to algebraic Petrov type D. The consistent solutions of this kind are either locally rotationally symmetric, or are subcases of the Szekeres dust models. Parts of our results require the assumption of a barotropic equation of state. Additionally we demonstrate that local rotational sy…
The dynamics of a class of cosmological models with collisionless matter and four Killing vectors is studied in detail and compared with that of corresponding perfect fluid models. In many cases it is possible to identify asymptotic states of the spacetimes near the singularity or in a phase of unlimited expansion. Bianchi type II models show oscillatory behaviour near the initial singularity which is, however, simpler than that of the mixmaster model.
This paper contains locally rotationally symmetric kinematic self-similar perfect fluid and dust solutions. We consider three families of metrics which admit kinematic self-similar vectors of the first, second, zeroth and infinite kinds, not only for the tilted fluid case but also for the parallel and orthogonal cases. It is found that the orthogonal case gives contradiction both in perfect fluid and dust cases for all the three metrics while the tilted case reduces to the parallel case in both perfect fluid and dust cases for the second metric. The remaining cases give self-similar solutions …
This paper is a study of the effects of anisotropic matter sources on the qualitative evolution of spatially homogenous cosmologies of Bianchi type VIII. The analysis is based on a dynamical system approach and makes use of an anisotropic matter family developed by Calogero and Heinzle which generalises perfect fluids and provides a measure of deviation from isotropy. Thereby the role of perfect fluid solutions is put into a broader context. The results of this paper concern the past and future asymptotic dynamics of locally rotationally symmetric solutions of type VIII with anisotropic matter…
All hypersurface homogeneous locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes which admit conformal symmetries are determined and the symmetry vectors are given explicitly. It is shown that these spacetimes must be considered in two sets. One set containing Ellis Class II and the other containing Ellis Class I, III LRS spacetimes. The determination of the conformal algebra in the first set is achieved by systematizing and completing results on the determination of CKVs in 2+2 decomposable spacetimes. In the second set new methods are developed. The results are applied to obtain the classification of …
First order perturbations of homogeneous and hypersurface orthogonal LRS (Locally Rotationally Symmetric) class II cosmologies with a cosmological constant are considered in the framework of the 1+1+2 covariant decomposition of spacetime. The perturbations, which are for a general energy-momentum tensor, include scalar, vector and tensor modes and extend some previous works where matter was assumed to be a perfect fluid. Through a harmonic decomposition, the system of equations is then transformed to evolution equations in time and algebraic constraints. This result is then applied to dissipat…
The dynamics of the Einstein-Vlasov equations for a class of cosmological models with four Killing vectors is discussed in the case of massive particles. It is shown that in all models analysed the solutions with massive particles are asymptotic to solutions with massless particles at early times. It is also shown that in Bianchi types I and II the solutions with massive particles are asymptotic to dust solutions at late times. That Bianchi type III models are also asymptotic to dust solutions at late times is consistent with our results but is not established by them.
In this paper we derive a general solution for the most general rotating and twisting locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes. This is achieved in three steps. First we decompose the manifold via 1+1+2 semi-tetrad formalism that yields a set of geometrical and thermodynamic scalars for the spacetime. We then recast the Einstein field equations in terms of evolution and propagation of these scalars. It is then shown that this class of spacetimes must possess self similarity and we use this property to solve for these scalars, thus obtaining a general solution. This solution has a number of ve…
We present a covariant decomposition of Einstein's Field Equations which is particularly suitable for perturbations of spherically symmetric -- and general locally rotationally symmetric -- spacetimes. Based upon the utility of the 1+3 covariant approach to perturbation theory in cosmology, the semi-tetrad, 1+1+2 approach presented here should be useful for analysing perturbations of a variety of systems in a covariant and gauge-invariant manner. Such applications range from stellar objects to cosmological models such as the spherically symmetric Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi solutions or the class of…
In this paper, we study the stability of marginally outer trapped surfaces (MOTS), foliating horizons of the form $r=X(τ)$, embedded in locally rotationally symmetric class II perfect fluid spacetimes. An upper bound on the area of stable MOTS is obtained. It is shown that any stable MOTS of the types considered in these spacetimes must be strictly stably outermost, that is, there are no MOTS ``outside" of and homologous to $\mathcal{S}$. Aspects of the topology of the MOTS, as well as the case when an extension is made to imperfect fluids, are discussed. Some non-existence results are also ob…
In this paper, we explore the energy-momentum distribution of locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) spacetimes in the context of the teleparallel theory of gravity by considering the three metrics, I, II and III, representing the whole class of LRS sapcetimes. In this regard, we use the teleparallel versions of the Einstein, Landau-Lifshitz, Bergmann-Thomson, and M$\ddot{o}$ller prescriptions. The results show that the momentum density components for the Einstein, Bergmann-Thomson, and M$\ddot{o}$ller prescriptions turn out to be same in all cases of the metrics I, II and III, but are different…
Despite having the somewhat successful description of accelerated cosmology, the early evolution of the universe always challenges mankind. Our promising approach lies in a new class of symmetric teleparallel theory of gravity named $f(Q)$, where the non-metricity scalar $Q$ is responsible for the gravitational interaction, which may resolve some of the issues. To study the early evolution of the universe, we presume an anisotropic locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) Bianchi-I spacetime and derive the motion equations. We discuss the profiles of energy density, equation of state and skewness …

In this paper we study the geometry of a certain class of compact dynamical horizons with a time-dependent induced metric in locally rotationally symmetric class II spacetimes. We first obtain a compactness condition for embedded $3$-manifolds in these spacetimes, satisfying the weak energy condition, with non-negative isotropic pressure $p$. General conditions for a $3$-manifold to be a dynamical horizon are imposed, as well as certain genericity conditions, which in the case of locally rotationally symmetric class II spacetimes reduces to the statement that `the weak energy condition is stri…
The dynamics of cosmological models with isotropic matter sources (perfect fluids) is extensively studied in the literature; in comparison, the dynamics of cosmological models with anisotropic matter sources is not. In this paper we consider spatially homogeneous locally rotationally symmetric solutions of the Einstein equations with a large class of anisotropic matter models including collisionless matter (Vlasov), elastic matter, and magnetic fields. The dynamics of models of Bianchi types I, II, and IX are completely described; the two most striking results are the following: (i) There exis…
We examine the behaviour of homogeneous, anisotropic space-times, specifically the locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi types $I$ and $VII_o$ in the presence of anisotropic matter. By finding an appropriate constant of the motion, and transforming the equations of motion we are able to provide exact solutions in the presence perfect fluids with anisotropic pressures. The solution space covers matter consisting of a single perfect fluid which satisfies the weak energy condition and is rich enough to contain solutions which exhibit behaviour which is qualitatively distinct from the isotropic s…
Recently, in a series of papers, we established the existence and found a general solution for the simultaneously rotating and twisting locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes in general relativity, which can model inhomogeneous and dynamic astrophysical bodies. However, these spacetimes necessarily require imperfect fluids with entropy flux. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the existence of these spacetimes in generic f(R)-gravity models, where the entropy flux is generated purely by higher order curvature effects, while the standard matter still remains a perfect fluid. However, we…
First order perturbations of homogeneous and hypersurface orthogonal LRS (Locally Rotationally Symmetric) class II cosmologies with a cosmological constant are considered in the framework of the 1+1+2 covariant decomposition of spacetime. The perturbations, which are of perfect fluid type, include general scalar, vector and tensor modes and extend some previous works where vorticity perturbations were excluded. A harmonic decomposition is performed and the field equations are then reduced to a set of eight evolution equations for eight harmonic coefficients, representing perturbations in densi…

We study the locally rotational symmetry Bianchi type-I dark energy model in the framework of $f(T)$ theory of gravity, where $T$ denotes the torsion scalar. A viable cosmological model is undertaken and the isotropization of this latter is checked, yielding a result that reflects the real evolution of our universe. Moreover, still in the anisotropic optic, a more complicated $f(T)$ model is obtained from the cosmological reconstruction scheme and the analysis shows that the universe is more anisotropic at the beginning if the terms of higher order in $T$ are not considered. This means that th…
Scalar field cosmologies with a generalized harmonic potential and a matter fluid with a barotropic Equation of State (EoS) with barotropic index $γ$ for the Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) Bianchi I and flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metrics are investigated. Methods from the theory of averaging of nonlinear dynamical systems are used to prove that time-dependent systems and their corresponding time-averaged versions have the same late-time dynamics. Therefore, the simplest time-averaged system determines the future asymptotic behavior. Depending on the values of $γ$, th…
We examine the stability of an Einstein-Maxwell perfect fluid configuration with a privileged direction of symmetry by means of a $1+1+2$-tetrad formalism. We use this formalism to cast, in a quasi linear symmetric hyperbolic form the equations describing the evolution of the system. This hyperbolic reduction is used to discuss the stability of solutions of the linear perturbation. By restricting the analysis to isotropic fluid configurations, we made use of a constant electrical conductivity coefficient for the fluid (plasma), and the nonlinear stability for the case of an infinitely conducti…

We analyse spatially homogenous cosmological models of locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi type III with a massive scalar field as matter model. Our main result concerns the future asymptotics of these spacetimes and gives the dominant time behaviour of the metric and the scalar field for all solutions for late times. This metric is forever expanding in all directions, however in one spatial direction only at a logarithmic rate, while at a power-law rate in the other two. Although the energy density goes to zero, it is matter dominated in the sense that the metric components differ qualitat…
Scalar field cosmologies with a generalized harmonic potential and a matter fluid with a barotropic Equation of State (EoS) with barotropic index $γ$ for Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) Bianchi III metric and open Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric are investigated. Methods from the theory of averaging of nonlinear dynamical systems are used to prove that time-dependent systems and their corresponding time-averaged versions have the same late-time dynamics. Therefore, simple time-averaged systems determine the future asymptotic behavior. Depending on values of barotropic in…
The Belinski-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz (BKL) conjecture predicts a chaotic alternation of Kasner epochs in the evolution of generic classical spacetimes towards a spacelike singularity. As a first step towards understanding the full quantum BKL scenario, we analyze a vacuum Bianchi II model with local rotational symmetry, which presents just one Kasner transition. During the Kasner epochs, the quantum state is coherent and it is thus characterized by constant values of the different quantum fluctuations, correlations and higher-order moments. By computing the constants of motion of the system we pr…
In this work we consider perturbations of homogeneous and hypersurface orthogonal cosmological backgrounds with local rotational symmetry (LRS), using a method based on the 1 + 1 + 2 covariant split of spacetime. The backgrounds, of LRS class II, are characterised by that the vorticity, the twist of the 2-sheets, and the magnetic part of the Weyl tensor all vanish. They include the flat Friedmann universe as a special case. The matter contents of the perturbed spacetimes are given by vorticity-free perfect fluids, but otherwise the perturbations are arbitrary and describe gravitational, shear,…
In this paper we study the dynamics of the trapped region using a frame independent semi-tetrad covariant formalism for general Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) class II spacetimes. We covariantly prove some important geometrical results for the apparent horizon, and state the necessary and sufficient conditions for a singularity to be locally naked. These conditions bring out, for the first time in a quantitative and transparent manner, the importance of the Weyl curvature in deforming and delaying the trapped region during continual gravitational collapse, making the central singularity …

Let $M$ be a locally rotationally symmetric spacetime with at least one of the rotation or spatial twist being non-zero. It is proved that $M$ cannot admit a non-minimal marginally trapped tube of the form $χ=X(t)$.
Locally rotationally symmetric perfect fluid solutions of Einstein's gravitational equations are matched along the hypersurface of vanishing pressure with the NUT metric. These rigidly rotating fluids are interpreted as sources for the vacuum exterior which consists only of a stationary region of the Taub-NUT space-time. The solution of the matching conditions leaves generally three parameters in the global solution. Examples of perfect fluid sources are discussed.
In this letter we discuss the connection between so-called homoclinic chaos and the violation of energy conditions in locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi type IX models, where the matter is assumed to be non-tilted dust and a positive cosmological constant. We show that homoclinic chaos in these models is an artifact of unphysical assumptions: it requires that there exist solutions with positive matter energy density $ρ>0$ that evolve through the singularity and beyond as solutions with negative matter energy density $ρ<0$. Homoclinic chaos is absent when it is assumed that the dust particl…
We study the possibility of generalising the Einstein--Straus model to anisotropic settings, by considering the matching of locally cylindrically symmetric static regions to the set of $G_4$ on $S_3$ locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) spacetimes. We show that such matchings preserving the symmetry are only possible for a restricted subset of the LRS models in which there is no evolution in one spacelike direction. These results are applied to spatially homogeneous (Bianchi) exteriors where the static part represents a finite bounded interior region without holes. We find that it is impossibl…
