Ba2CaMoO6 was synthesized by solid state method. The crystal structure adopts cubic Fm-3m space group at room temperature with lattice parameters of 8.378231(5) {angstroms}. Upon cooling, Ba2CaMoO6 was determined to have a structural phase transition to tetragonal I4/m (a=5.905763(6) {angstroms} and c=8.38817(1) {angstroms}) around 200 K. The phase transition was probed structurally by synchrotron and neutron diffraction and thermodynamically by specific heat and differential scanning calorimetry measurement. This structural phase transition will deepens our understanding of the perovskite family especially the formation of perovskites that break corner sharing networks.
An organic-inorganic halide perovskite of CH3NH3SnI3 with significantly improved structural stability is obtained via pressure-induced amorphization and recrystallization. In situ high-pressure resistance measurements reveal an increased electrical conductivity by 300% in the pressure-treated perovskite. Photocurrent measurements also reveal a substantial enhancement in visible-light responsiveness. The mechanism underlying the enhanced properties is demonstrated to be associated with the improved structural stability.
We predict the structural, electronic and optic properties of the inorganic Ge-based halide perovskites AGeX3 (A = Cs, Rb; X = I, Br, Cl) by using first-principles method. In particular, absolute electronic energy band levels are calculated using two different surface terminations of each compound, reproducing the experimental band alignment.
Scanning nanofocus X-ray diffraction (nXRD) performed at a synchrotron is used for the first time to simultaneously probe the morphology and the structural properties of spin-coated CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) perovskite films for photovoltaic devices. MAPI films are spin-coated on a Si/SiO2/PEDOT:PSS substrate held at different temperatures during the deposition in order to tune the perovskite film coverage, and then investigated by nXRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scatter-ing (GI-WAXS). The advantages of nXRD over SEM and GI-WAXS are dis-cussed. A method …
We formulate an effective model for B-B' site ordering in double perovskite materials A_2BB'O_6. Even within the simple framework of lattice-gas type models, we are able to address several experimentally observed issues including nonmonotonic dependence of the degree of order on annealing temperature, and the rapid decrease of order upon overdoping with either B or B' species. We also study ordering in the `ternary' compounds A_2BB'_{1-y}B''_yO_6 Although our emphasis is on the double perovskites, our results are easily generalizable to a wide variety of binary and ternary alloys.
Here, we report structural and optical properties of (ALa)(FeMn)O6 (A = Ba and Sr) double perovskite synthesized via auto-combustion followed by a calcination process. Rietveld refinement of the structure using x-ray diffraction data reveals that (BaLa)(FeMn)O6 crystallizes into cubic crystal structure with space group Pm-3m while (SrLa)(FeMn)O6 crystallizes into rhombohedral crystal structure having space group R-3c. The absorption spectrum measurement using UV-Vis spectroscopy reveals that these samples are perfect insulator having an energy band gap between conduction and valence band of th…
A detailed study of the high-pressure structural properties, lattice dynamics and band structures of perovskite structured fluorides KZnF3, CsCaF3 and BaLiF3 has been carried out by means of density functional theory. The calculated structural properties including elastic constants and equation of state agree well with available experimental information. The phonon dispersion curves are in good agreement with available experimental inelastic neutron scattering data. The electronic structures of these fluorides have been calculated using the quasi particle self-consistent [Formula: see text] ap…
The performance of perovskite solar cells recently exceeded 15% solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency for small-area devices. The fundamental properties of the active absorber layers, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites formed from mixing metal and organic halides [\textit{e.g.} (NH$_4$)PbI$_3$ and (CH$_3$NH$_3$)PbI$_3$], are largely unknown. The materials are semiconductors with direct band gaps at the boundary of the first Brillouin zone. The calculated dielectric response and band gaps show an orientation dependence, with a low barrier for rotation of the organic cations. Due to the e…
Perovskite transition-metal oxides are networks of corner-sharing octahedra whose tilts and distortions are known to affect their electronic and magnetic properties. We report calculations on a model interfacial structure to avoid chemical influences and show that the symmetry mismatch imposes an interfacial layer with distortion modes that do not exist in either bulk material, creating new interface properties driven by symmetry alone. Depending on the resistance of the octahedra to deformation, the interface layer can be as small as one unit cell or extend deep into the thin film.
The structural, electrical, optical, and mechanical characteristics of the lead-free halide double perovskites Cs2NaTlX6 X = F, Cl, Br are calculated by utilizing PBE functional within generalized gradient approximation GGA under the context of density functional theory DFT.The structural properties such as lattice parameter, cell volume, total energy, bulk modulus, pressure derivative, and tolerance factor are computed at equilibrium. The electronic density of states reveals the semiconducting nature of the compound and the band structure exhibits the nature of the band gap to be direct.HSE06 …
The hybrid perovskites are coordination frameworks with the same topology as the inorganic perovskites, but with properties driven by different chemistry, including host-framework hydrogen bonding. Like the inorganic perovskites, these materials exhibit many different phases, including structures with potentially exploitable functionality. However, far less is known about their behaviour under pressure. We have studied the structures of of manganese and cobalt guanidinium formate under pressure using single-crystal X-ray and powder neutron diffraction. Remarkably, when pressure reduces these m…
Organolead halide perovskites are a family of hybrid organic-inorganic compounds whose remarkable optoelectronic properties have been under intensive scrutiny in recent years. Here we use inelastic X-ray scattering to study low-energy lattice excitations in single crystals of methylammonium lead iodide and bromide perovskites. Our findings confirm the displacive nature of the cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition, which is further shown, using neutron and x-ray diffraction, to be close to a tricritical point. Lastly, we detect quasistatic symmetry-breaking nanodomains persisting well into the h…
We present a temperature dependent single crystal x-ray diffraction study of twinned orthorhombic perovskites La1-xCaxMnO3, for x=0.16 and x=0.25. These data show the evolution of the crystal structure from the ferromagnetic insulating state to the ferromagnetic metallic state. The data are modelled in space group Pnma with twin relations based on a distribution of the b axis over three perpendicular cubic axes. The twin model allows full structure determination in the presence of up to six twin fractions using the single crystal x-ray diffraction data.
Spin-phonon interactions are central to many interesting phenomena, ranging from superconductivity to magnetoelectric effects. Yet, they are believed to have a negligible influence on the structural behavior of most materials. For example, magnetic perovskite oxides often undergo structural transitions accompanied by magnetic signatures whose minuteness suggests that the underlying spin-phonon couplings are largely irrelevant. Here we present an exception to this rule, showing that novel effects can occur as a consequence. Our first-principles calculations reveal that spin-phonon interactions …
Inorganic metal-halide cubic perovskite semiconductors have become more popular in industrial applications of photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices. Among various perovskites, lead-free materials are currently most explored due to their non-toxic effect on the environment. In this study, the structural, electronic, optical, and mechanical properties of lead-free cubic perovskite materials FrBX3 (B = Ge, Sn; X = Cl, Br, I) are investigated through first-principles density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. These materials are found to exhibit semiconducting behavior with direct bandgap ene…
We extend our previous first-principles theory for perovskite ferroelectric phase transitions to treat also antiferrodistortive phase transitions. Our approach involves construction of a model Hamiltonian from a Taylor expansion, first-principles calculations to determine expansion parameters, and Monte Carlo simulations to study the resulting system. We apply this approach to three cubic perovskite compounds, SrTiO3, CaTiO3, and NaNbO3, that are known to undergo antiferrodistortive phase transitions. We calculate their transition sequences and transition temperatures at the experimental latti…
In this work, we report the synthesis and investigation of structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of La$_{1.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$(Co$_{0.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$)IrO$_6$. Our polycrystalline sample forms as a single-phase double perovskite in monoclinic $P2_{1}/n$ space group. Co and Ir are most likely in bivalent and tetravalent oxidation states, respectively, while Mossbauer spectroscopy indicates that Fe is in a trivalent state. The ac and dc magnetization data suggest a ferrimagnetic behavior resulting from the presence of two antiferromagnetic sublattices at Co/Fe and Ir sites. The large coercive f…
PbTiO3 has the highest tetragonal distortion (c/a=1.064) and highest spontaneous polarization among perovskite titanates. But, it is hazardous and hence one needs to reduce Pb content by substituting or reducing Pb content for use in applications. Pb(1-x)(K0.5Sm0.5)xTiO3 (0&x&0.5) perovskite powders were synthesized by sol-gel process, where Pb2+ was replaced by a combination of K+10.5Sm+30.5 (equivalent charge and comparable ionic radius) providing an excellent substitution model to study changes in structural and electrical properties. Vibrational properties and dielectric properties are mod…
Structural disorder is common in metal-halide perovskites and important for understanding the functional properties of these materials. First-principles methods can address structure variation on the atomistic scale, but they are often limited by the lack of structure-sampling schemes required to characterize the disorder. In this work, structural disorder in the benchmark inorganic halide perovskites CsPbI$_3^{}$ and CsPbBr$_3^{}$ is computationally studied in terms of the three octahedral-tilting angles. The consequent variation in energetics and properties are described by three-dimensional…
Negative thermal expansion (NTE) describes the anomalous propensity of materials to shrink when heated. Since its discovery, the NTE effect has been found in a wide variety of materials with an array of magnetic, electronic and structural properties. In some cases, the NTE originates from phase competition arising from the electronic or magnetic degrees of freedom but we here focus on a particular class of NTE which originates from intrinsic dynamical origins related to the lattice degrees of freedom, a property we term \textit{structural} negative thermal expansion (SNTE). Here we review some…
We use first-principles density functional theory-based calculations to investigate structural instabilities in the high symmetry cubic perovskite structure of rare-earth (R $=$ La, Y, Lu) and Bi-based biferroic chromites, focusing on $Γ$ and $R$ point phonons of states with para-, ferro-, and antiferromagnetic ordering. We find that (a) the structure with G-type antiferromagnetic ordering is most stable, (b) the most dominant structural instabilities in these oxides are the ones associated with rotations of oxygen octahedra, and (c) structural instabilities involving changes in Cr-O-Cr bond a…
Perovskite oxides are already widely used in industry and have huge potential for novel device applications thanks to the rich physical behaviour displayed in these materials. The key to the functional electronic properties exhibited by perovskites is often the so-called Jahn-Teller distortion. For applications, an electrical control of the Jahn-Teller distortions, which is so far out of reach, would therefore be highly desirable. Based on universal symmetry arguments, we determine new lattice mode couplings that can provide exactly this paradigm, and exemplify the effect from first-principles…
In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have attracted wide attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties in the application of optoelectronic devices. In the manufacturing process of perovskite solar cells, perovskite films inevitably have residual stress caused by non-stoichiometry components and the external load. However, their effects on the structural stability and photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells are still not clear. In this work, we investigated the effects of external strain on the structural stability and optoelectronic properties of tetra…
Single phase polycrystalline sample of perovskite Sr2TiMnO6 (STMO) has been successfully synthesized via solid state reaction route. Its detailed structural and physical properties have been studied using x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, magnetization, specific heat, and dielectric measurements. Rietveld analysis of the powder XRD data and transmission electron microscopy studies confirm that STMO is not a double perovskite structure with Fm-3m space group. But it is a disordered perovskite structure with Pm-3m space group where Ti4+ and Mn4+ ions are randomly distributed a…
We show that the decomposition of caesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals under continuous X-ray illumination depends on the surface ligand. For oleic acid/oleylamine, we observe a fast decay accompanied by the formation of elemental lead and halogen. Upon surface functionalization with a metal porphyrin derivate, the decay is markedly slower and involves the disproportionation of lead to Pb0 and Pb3+. In both cases, the decomposition is preceded by a contraction of the atomic lattice, which appears to initiate the decay. We find that the metal porphyrin derivative induces a strong surface…
We present a systematic first-principles study of the structural and vibrational properties of perovskite-structure EuTiO3. Our calculated phonon spectrum of the high-symmetry cubic structural prototype shows strong M- and R-point instabilities, indicating a tendency to symmetry-lowering structural deformations composed of rotations and tilts of the oxygen octahedra. Subsequent explicit study of 14 different octahedral tilt-patterns showed that the I4/mcm, Imma, and R\bar{3}c structures, all with antiferrodistortive rotations of the octahedra, have significantly lower total energy than the pro…
Double perovskites R2NiMnO6 (R= Rare earth element) (RNMO) are a significant class of materials owing to their varied tunability of the magnetic and electrical properties with the structural modifications. Pr2NiMnO6 (PNMO) is one of the least explored members of this series, which shows spin-phonon coupling, magnetocaloric effect, and electrochemical performance for various applications such as spintronics, magnetocaloric refrigerant, and solid oxide fuel cells. Most of the studies in PNMO are limited to the application domain and focus on the comparative study with different rare earth elemen…
High-temperature phase behavior in the system LixNa1-xNbO3 has been studied by using high-resolution powder neutron diffraction. Each of the three compositions studied in the Na-rich part of the phase diagram (x = 0.03, 0.08 and 0.12) shows evidence for distinct and complex structural modulations based on different tilting schemes of NbO6 octahedral units. Whilst octahedral tilting is prevalent in the structural chemistry of perovskites the nature of complexity of the phases observed here is unprecedented. Neither of the long-range tilt phases observed in NaNbO3 itself occurs here; instead a n…
In this paper we provide an accurate high-pressure structural and optical study of MAPbI3 hybrid perovskite. Structural data show the presence of a phase transition towards an orthorhombic structure around 0.3 GPa followed by full amorphization of the system above 3 GPa. After releasing pressure the systems keeps the high-pressure orthorhombic phase. The occurrence of these structural transitions is further confirmed by pressure induced variations of the photoluminescence signal at high pressure. These variations clearly indicate that the bandgap value and the electronic structure of MAPI chan…
We show with first-principles molecular dynamics the persistence of intrinsic $\langle111\rangle$ Ti off-centerings for BaTiO$_3$ in its cubic paraelectric phase. Intriguingly, these are inconsistent with the Pm$\bar 3$m space group often used to atomistically model this phase using density functional theory or similar methods. Therefore we deploy a systematic symmetry analysis to construct representative structural models in the form of supercells that satisfy a desired point symmetry but are built from the combination of lower-symmetry primitive cells. We define as structural prototypes the …
We investigate the structural, electronic and optical properties of mixed bromide-iodide lead perovskite solar cell CH$_3$NH$_3$Pb(I$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_3$ by means of the virtual crystal approximation (VCA) within density functional theory (DFT). Optimizing the atomic positions and lattice parameters increasing the bromide content $x$ from 0.0 to 1.0, we fit the calculated lattice parameter and energy band gap to the linear and quadratic function of Br content, respectively, which are in good agreement with the experiment, respecting the Vegard's law. With the calculated exciton binding energy an…
Among multifunctional double perovskite oxides, La2NiMnO6 has recently drawn significant attention due to its importance both in terms of understanding of fundamental physics and potential for device applications. The relative alteration in Ni:Mn ratio strongly influences the structural, magnetic and electrical properties of La2NiMnO6. In the present study, La2Ni1.5Mn0.5O6 sample with Ni:Mn = 3:1 ratio has been prepared using sol-gel method and modifications of the above physical properties from that of a stiochiometric sample of La2NiMnO6 are discussed. Rietveld analysis of X-ray diffraction …
Structure, optical and electronic properties of predicted stables Perovskites ABX3 are calculated using DFT approach. The modified Becke-Johnson potential is also used to investigate electrical and optical properties. The density of states and electronic band structure calculations reveal that the predicted stable halides Perovskites ABX3 have a direct as well as indirect band gap, with dielectric function, optical reflectivity, absorption coefficient, optical conductivity, extinction coefficient, refractive index are calculated in different ranges of energy. The maximum value of static dielec…
The structural behaviour of CsCdF3 under pressure is investigated by means of theory and experiment. High-pressure powder x-ray diffraction experiments were performed up to a maximum pressure of 60 GPa using synchrotron radiation. The cubic $Pm\bar{3}m$ crystal symmetry persists throughout this pressure range. Theoretical calculations were carried out using the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital method within the local density approximation and the generalized gradient approximation for exchange and correlation effects. The calculated ground state properties -- the equilibrium lattice co…
Lead-free double perovskites are overtaking single perovskites as solar harvesting materials due to their superior stability, excellent catalytic efficiency and minimal toxicity. In this investigation, we have synthesized double perovskite Gd$_{2}$FeCrO$_{6}$ (GFCO) nanoparticles for the first time via a facile sol-gel technique to investigate their structural, magnetic and optical properties. The double perovskite GFCO crystallized in monoclinic structure with P2$_1$/n space group. The Fe/Cr-O bond length was calculated as $\sim$1.95 angstrom from the Raman spectrum which was consistent with …
The structure and ground state electronic structure of the recently synthesized SrPdO$_3$ perovskite [A. Galal {\em et al.}, J. Power Sources, {\bf 195}, 3806 (2010)] have been studied by means of screened hybrid functional and the GW approximation with the inclusion of electron-hole interaction within the test-charge/test-charge scheme. By conducting a structural search based on lattice dynamics and group theoretical method we identify the orthorhombic phase with $P_{nma}$ space group as the most stable crystal structure. The phase transition from the ideal cubic perovskite structure to the $…
Using density-functional theory calculations, we analyze the optical absorption properties of lead (Pb)-free metal halide perovskites (AB$^{2+}$X$_3$) and double perovskites (AB$^+$B$^{3+}$X$_6$) (A = Cs or monovalent organic ion, B$^{2+}$ = non-Pb divalent metal, B$^+$ = monovalent metal, B$^{3+}$ = trivalent metal, X = halogen). We show that, if B$^{2+}$ is not Sn or Ge, Pb-free metal halide perovskites exhibit poor optical absorptions because of their indirect bandgap nature. Among the nine possible types of Pb-free metal halide double perovskites, six have direct bandgaps. Of these six typ…
The spin Hall effect (SHE) is highly promising for spintronic applications, and the design of materials with large SHE can enable ultra-low power memory technology. Recently, 5d-transition metal oxides have been shown to demonstrate a large SHE. Here we report large values of SHE in four 5d-transition metal anti-perovskites which makes these anti-perovskites promising spintronic materials. We demonstrate that these effects originate in the mixing of dx2-y2 and dxy orbitals caused by spin orbit coupling.
Solid solutions of perovskite oxides (KNbO3)1-x+(La2NiMnO6)x (x=0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) with a variation of band gap (1.33-3.6 eV) have been introduced as a promising photovoltaic absorber. The structural characterization of the prepared samples was carried out using X-ray diffraction (followed by Rietveld refinement) and Raman experiment. As the doping percentage of the monoclinic La2NiMnO6 in the solid-solution increases, the crystal structure of host KNbO3 becomes more symmetric from orthorhombic to cubic. A large reduction in the particle size has also been observed in the solid solutions in …
The complex perovskite Pb2CoTeO6 (PCTO) has been prepared as polycrystalline powders by solid state reaction route, and the crystal structure and magnetic properties have been investigated using a combination of X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron microscopy, dielectric, calorimetric and magnetic measurements. It was shown that at room temperature this compound adopts a trigonal perovskite structure, space group R-3 (a= 5.6782(1)Å, c= 13.8552(3)Å). The compound undergoes a number of temperature-induced phase transitions and adopts four different structures in the temperature range 5…
MgGeO$_3$-perovskite is known to be a low-pressure analog of MgSiO$_3$-perovskite in many respects, but especially in regard to the post-perovskite transition. As such, investigation of spin state changes in Fe-bearing MgGeO$_3$ might help to clarify some aspects of this type of state change in Fe-bearing MgSiO$_3$. Using DFT+U calculations, we have investigated pressure induced spin state changes in Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ in MgGeO$_3$ perovskite and post-perovskite. Owing to the relatively larger atomic size of germanium compared to silicon, germanate phases have larger unit cell volume and …
Ion displacements are the cause of the ferroelectricity in perovskites. By properly shifting ions, ab initio computations have been extensively used to investigate properties of perovsites in various structural phases. In addition to the relatively simple ion displacements, perovskites have another type of structural distortion known as antiferrodistortion or oxygen octahedron tilting. The interplay between these two types of distortions have generated abundant structural phases that can be tedious to prepare for ab initio computation, especially for large supercells. Here, we design and imple…
The Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof generalized gradient approximation to the density functional theory is tested with respect to sensitivity to the choice of the value of the parameter $κ$, which is associated to the degree of localization of the exchange-correlation hole. A study of structural and dynamical properties of four selected ferroelectric perovskites is presented. The originally proposed value of $κ$=0.804 %(best suited for atoms and molecules) works well for some solids, whereas for the ABO$_3$ perovskites it must be decreased in order to predict equilibrium lattice parameters in good agre…
Understanding the intrinsic charge transport in organolead halide perovskites is essential for the development of high-efficiency photovoltaics and other optoelectronic devices. Despite the rapid advancement of the organolead halide perovskite in photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications, the intrinsic charge carrier transport in these materials remains elusive partly due to the difficulty of fabricating electrical devices and obtaining good electrical contact. Here, we report the fabrication of organolead halide perovskite microplates with monolayer graphene as low barrier electrical conta…
Transition metal perovskite chalcogenides (TMPC) are a new class of semiconductor materials with broad tunability of physical properties due to their chemical and structural flexibility. Theoretical calculations show that band gaps of TMPCs are tunable from Far IR to UV spectrum. Amongst these materials, more than a handful of materials have energy gap and very high absorption coefficients, which are appropriate for optoelectronic applications, especially solar energy conversion. Despite several promising theoretical predictions, very little experimental studies on their physical properties ar…
Ferromagnetic La3NiAlMnO9 (LNAMO) and La3CoAlMnO9 (LCAMO) triple-perovskite thin films are stabilized in the 750-860 oC temperature range in 100 to 900 mTorr O2 pressure range using pulsed-laser deposition. The LCAMO and LNAMO films exhibit ferromagnetism up to 190 K and 130 K respectively. The structural, optical and magnetic properties of these films demonstrate that the B-site 3d-cations, Al, Mn and Co or Ni ions, are structurally short-range ordered. The strong spin-lattice-polarization coupling in LCAMO is evidenced by the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant and the softenin…
We study the antiferrodistortive instability and its interaction with ferroelectricity in cubic perovskite compounds. Our first-principles calculations show that coexistence of both instabilities is very common. We develop a first-principles scheme to study the thermodynamics of these compounds when both instabilities are present, and apply it to SrTiO$_3$. We find that increased pressure enhances the antiferrodistortive instability while suppressing the ferroelectric one. Moreover, the presence of one instability tends to suppress the other. A very rich $P$--$T$ phase diagram results.
In transition metal perovskites (ABO3) most physical properties are tunable by structural parameters such as the rotation of the BO6 octahedra. Examples include the Néel temperature of orthoferrites, the conductivity of mixed-valence manganites, or the band gap of rare-earth scandates. Since oxides often host large internal electric dipoles and can accommodate heavy elements, they also emerge as prime candidates to display Rashba spin-orbit coupling, through which charge and spin currents may be efficiently interconverted. However, despite a few experimental reports in SrTiO3-based interface s…
We report and compare the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of ordered La2NiMnO6 thin films and its disordered LaNi0.5Mn0.5O3 counterpart. An x-ray diffraction study reveals that the B-site Ni/Mn ordering induces additional XRD reflections as the crystal symmetry is transformed from a pseudocubic perovskite unit cell in the disordered phase to a monoclinic form with larger lattice parameters for the ordered phase. Polarized Raman spectroscopy studies reveal that the ordered samples are characterized by additional phonon excitations that are absent in the disordered phase. The appear…
Perovskite photovoltaic ABX$_3$ systems are being studied due to their high energy-conversion efficiencies with current emphasis placed on pure inorganic systems. In this work, synchrotron single-crystal diffraction measurements combined with second harmonic generation measurements reveal the absence of inversion symmetry below room temperature in CsPbBr$_3$. Local structural analysis by pair distribution function and X-ray absorption fine structure methods are performed to ascertain the local ordering, atomic pair correlations, and phase evolution in a broad range of temperatures. The current…
