Scanning nanofocus X-ray diffraction (nXRD) performed at a synchrotron is used for the first time to simultaneously probe the morphology and the structural properties of spin-coated CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) perovskite films for photovoltaic devices. MAPI films are spin-coated on a Si/SiO2/PEDOT:PSS substrate held at different temperatures during the deposition in order to tune the perovskite film coverage, and then investigated by nXRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scatter-ing (GI-WAXS). The advantages of nXRD over SEM and GI-WAXS are dis-cussed. A method to visualize, selectively isolate, and structurally charac-terize single perovskite grains buried within a complex, polycrystalline film is developed. The results of nXRD measurements are correlated with solar cell device measurements, and it is shown that spin-coating the perovskite precursor solution at elevated temperatures leads to improved surface coverage and enhanced solar cell performance.
Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites offer a unique platform to investigate the ground-state of materials possessing significant anharmonicity. In contrast to three-dimensional perovskites, their 2D counterparts offer substantially fewer degrees of freedom, resulting in multiple well-defined crystal structures. In this work, we thoroughly investigate the anharmonic ground-state of the benchmark (PEA)2PbI4 compound, using complementary information from low-temperature x-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence spectroscopy, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We ext…
This article reports on studies of chlorine-substituted MAPbI3 using combined temperature-dependent XRD synchrotron and Pb-L3 edge EXAFS to analyze the anharmonicity of the lead halide bond. The EXAFS parameters were described in the orthorhombic phase by an Einstein or T2 type behavior, which was then compared with the experimental EXAFS parameters of the tetragonal/cubic phase. In the orthorhombic phase, it was observed that the asymmetry of the pair distribution function (cumulant C3) in MAPbCl3 is much lower than in MAPbI3. Compared with the behavior in the orthorhombic phase, the anharmon…
Photochemical stability of encapsulated films of mixed halide perovskites with a range of MAPb(I1-xBrx)3 compositions (solid solutions) was investigated under accelerated stressing using concentrated sunlight. Evolution of light absorption and the corresponding structural modifications in the films were recorded by UV-vis spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. MAPbBr3 film exhibited no degradation. In MAPbI3 and mixed halide MAPb(I1-xBrx)3 films, decomposition of the perovskite material with crystallization of inorganic PbI2, and the corresponding degradation of light absorpti…

Single crystals of Cs2BiAgBr6 lead-free perovskite were grown by crystallization from supersaturated solution. According to characterization by XRD and EBSD methods the double perovskite single crystal are of the cubic Fm-3m symmetry with the lattice constant a = 11.20 Å. DFT predictions based on the single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis reveal that the material is an indirect band gap semiconductor. Low temperature (1.4 K) photoluminescence spectra demonstrate three broadened bands that correspond to two lowest computed indirect and one direct band-to-band transitions.
We present a colloidal synthesis strategy to obtain single-crystalline PbS nanorings. By controlling the ripening process in the presence of halide ions, a transformation of initial PbS nanosheets to frame-like structures and finally to nanorings was achieved. We found that the competing ligands oleic acid, oleate and halide ions play an important role in the formation of these nanostructures. Therefore, we propose a formation mechanism based on a thermally induced ripening of crystal facets dependent on the surface passivation. With this method, it became possible to synthesize colloidal nano…
Previous theoretical calculations show azetidinium has the right radial size to form a 3D perovskite with lead halides [1], and has been shown to impart, as the A-site cation of ABX3 unit, beneficial properties to ferroelectric perovskites [2]. However, there has been very limited research into its use as the cation in lead halide perovskites to date. In this communication we report the synthesis and characterization of azetidinium-based lead mixed halide perovskite colloidal nanocrystals. The mixed halide system is iodine and chlorine unlike other reported nanocrystals in the literature where…
Many key features in photovoltaic perovskites occur in relatively long time scales and involve mixed compositions. This requires realistic but also numerically simple models. In this work we present a transferable classical force field to describe the mixed hybrid perovskite MA$_x$FA$_{1-x}$Pb(Br$_y$I$_{1-y}$)$_3$ for variable composition ($\forall x,y \in [0,1]$). The model includes Lennard-Jones and Buckingham potentials to describe the interactions between the atoms of the inorganic lattice and the organic molecule, and the AMBER model to describe intramolecular atomic interactions. Most of…
Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are nowadays one of the most studied semiconductors due to their exceptional performance as active layers in solar cells. Although MHPs are excellent solid-state semiconductors, they are also ionic compounds, where ion migration plays a decisive role in their formation, their photovoltaic performance and their long-term stability. Given the above-mentioned complexity, molecular dynamics simulations based on classical force fields are especially suited to study MHP properties, such as lattice dynamics and ion migration. In particular, the possibility to model mix…
Photo- and charge-carrier induced ion migration is a major challenge when utilizing metal halide perovskite semiconductors for optoelectronic applications. For mixed iodide/bromide perovskites, the compositional instability due to light- or electrical bias induced phase- segregation restricts the exploitation of the entire bandgap range. Previous experimental and theoretical work suggests that excited states or charge-carriers trigger the process but the exact mechanism is still under debate. To identify the mechanism and cause of light-induced phase-segregation phenomena we investigate the fu…
The potential of lead-halide perovskites for realistic applications is currently hindered by their limited long-term stability under functional activation. While the role of lattice flexibility in the thermal response of perovskites has become increasingly evident, the description of thermally-induced distortions is still unclear. In this work, we provide a unified picture of thermal activation in CsPbBr3 across length scales, showing that lattice symmetry does not increase at high temperatures. We combine temperature-dependent XRD, Br K-edge XANES, ab initio MD simulations, and calculations o…
Methylammonium lead halide perovskites have been developed as highly promising materials to fabricate efficient solar cells in the past few years. The real impact to energy applications relies on the understanding and controlling of the stability of the material. We investigated the degradation of CH3NH3PbI3 by air exposure using x-ray diffraction (XRD), x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The stoichiometric sample was grown with co-evaporation of PbI2 and CH3NH3I on a Au coated Si wafer. It was found that the perovskite thin film gradually turned to PbI2…

X-ray diffraction (XRD) data acquisition and analysis is among the most time-consuming steps in the development cycle of novel thin-film materials. We propose a machine-learning-enabled approach to predict crystallographic dimensionality and space group from a limited number of thin-film XRD patterns. We overcome the scarce-data problem intrinsic to novel materials development by coupling a supervised machine learning approach with a model agnostic, physics-informed data augmentation strategy using simulated data from the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD) and experimental data. As a …

This study introduces a new chemical method for controlling the strain in methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite crystals by varying the ratio of Pb(Ac)2 and PbCl2 in the precursor solution. To observe the effect on crystal strain, a combination of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) is used. The PFM images show an increase in the average size of ferroelastic twin domains upon increasing the PbCl2 content, indicating an increase in crystal strain. The XRD spectra support this observation with strong crystal twinning features that appear in the spectra. This…
Structural stability, electronic structure and optical properties of CH3NH3BaI3 hybrid perovskite is examined both from theory as well as experiment. Solution-processed thin films of CH3NH3BaI3 exhibited a high band gap of approximately 3.87 eV, which is in excellent agreement with the theoretical estimate of 4 eV. Also, the XRD patterns of the thin films match well with the l-peaks of the simulated pattern obtained from the relaxed unit cell of CH3NH3BaI3, crystallizing in the I4/mcm space group, with lattice parameters, a = 9.30 A, c = 13.94 A. Atom projected density of state and band struct…
Silver benzeneselenolate [AgSePh] is a coordination polymer that hosts a hybrid quantum well structure. The recent advancements in the study of its tightly bound excitons (~300 meV) and photoconductive properties (recently employed in UV photodetection) makes it an interesting representative of a material platform that is an environmentally stable alternative to 2D metal halide perovskites in terms of optoelectronic properties. To this aim, several challenges are to be addressed, among which the lack of control over the metal-organic reaction process in the reported synthesis of the [AgSePh] n…
