Theories with both electric and magnetic charges ("mutually non-local" theories) have several major obstacles to calculating scattering amplitudes. Even when the interaction arises through the kinetic mixing of two, otherwise independent, U(1)'s, so that all low-energy interactions are perturbative, difficulties remain: using a self-dual, local formalism leads to spurious poles at any finite order in perturbation theory. Correct calculations must show how the spurious poles cancel in observable scattering amplitudes. Consistency requires that one type of charge is confined as a result of one of the U(1)'s being broken. Here we show how the constraints of confinement and parity conservation on observable processes manages to cancel the spurious poles in scattering and pair production amplitudes, paving the way for systematic studies of the experimental signatures of "dark" electric-magnetic processes. Along the way we demonstrate some novel effects in electric-magnetic interactions, including that the amplitude for single photon production of magnetic particles by electric particles vanishes.
In unitarity cut method, compact input of on-shell tree level amplitudes is crucial to simplify calculations. Although BCFW on-shell recursion relation gives very compact tree level amplitudes, they usually contain spurious poles. In this paper, we present a method to deal with this issue and provide explicit simple algebraic functions for various coefficients in the presence of spurious poles. As an application, we present analytic result (not just rational term) for one-loop five gluon A(-++++) with scalar propagator for the first time.
We extend the double copy picture of scattering amplitudes to a class of matrix elements (so-called form factors) that involve local gauge invariant operators. Both the Bern, Carrasco and Johansson (BCJ) and the Kawai, Lewellen and Tye (KLT) formalisms are considered and novel properties are observed. One remarkable feature is that through the double-copy construction, certain spurious poles hidden in the gauge form factors become physical propagators in gravity. This mechanism also reveals new hidden relations for form factors which can be understood as a generalization of the BCJ relations.
This note addresses the problem of spurious poles in gauge-theoretic scattering amplitudes. New twistor coordinates for the momenta are introduced, based on the concept of dual conformal invariance. The cancellation of spurious poles for a class of NMHV amplitudes is greatly simplified in these coordinates. The poles are eliminated altogether by defining a new type of twistor integral, dual to twistor diagrams as previously studied, and considerably simpler. The geometric features indicate a supersymmetric extension of the formalism at least to all NMHV amplitudes, allowing the dihedral symmet…
This paper shows that not only do the codimension one spurious poles of $N^k MHV$ tree level diagrams in N=4 SYM theory cancel in the tree level amplitude as expected, but their vanishing loci have a geometric interpretation that is tightly connected to their representation in the positive Grassmannians. In general, given a positroid variety, $Σ$, and a minimal matrix representation of it in terms of independent variable valued matrices, $M_{\mathcal{V}}$, one can define a polynomial, $R({\mathcal{V}})$ that is uniquely defined by the Grassmann necklace, ${\mathcal{I}}$, of the positroid cell.…
We show for the classical Maxwell equations, including the axion electromagnetic anomaly source term, that a cosmic axion field induces an oscillating electric N-moment for any static magnetic N-moment. This is a straightforward result, accessible to anyone who has taken a first year graduate course in electrodynamics.
We provide a new proof of Cachazo-Svrcek-Witten rules for tree-level gluonic amplitudes. As a key step, we explicitly show the cancellation of spurious poles originating from the maximally helicity violating vertices in these rules. To achieve this, we introduce specially-defined two-off-shell-line sub-amplitudes and study their residues at spurious poles.

We reformulate the quantization of the gravitational field and its sources, including the electric and magnetic fields as they appear in the knot algebra.
It is well-known that in scenarios with direct gauge mediation of supersymmetry breaking the messenger fields significantly affect the running of Standard Model couplings and introduce Landau poles which are difficult to avoid. This appears to remove any possibility of a meaningful unification prediction and is often viewed as a strong argument against direct mediation. We propose two ways that Seiberg duality can circumvent this problem. In the first, which we call "deflected-unification", the SUSY-breaking hidden sector is a magnetic theory which undergoes a duality to an electric phase, wit…
The static electric polarization of a holographic field theory dual to the Einstein-Maxwell theory in the background of $AdS_4$ with a Reissner-Nordstöm (AdS-RN) black hole is investigated. We prove that the holographic polarization is a meromorphic functions in complex momentum plane and locate analytically the asymptotic distribution of the poles along two straight lines parallel to the imaginary axis for a large momentum magnitude. The results are compared with the numerical result on Friedel-like poles of the same holographic model reported in the literature and with the momentum singulari…
Instability of electron-positron vacuum in strong electric fields is studied. First, falling to the Coulomb center is discussed at $Z>137/2$ for a spinless boson and at $Z>137$ for electron. Then, focus is concentrated on description of deep electron levels and spontaneous positron production in the field of a finite-size nucleus with the charge $Z>Z_{\rm cr}\simeq 170$. Next, these effects are studied in application to the low-energy heavy-ion collisions. Then, we consider phenomenon of "electron condensation" on levels of upper continuum crossed the boundary of the lower continuum $ε=-m$ in …
We propose and study a BCJ double-copy of massive particles, showing that it is equivalent to a KLT formula with a kernel given by the inverse of a matrix of massive bi-adjoint scalar amplitudes. For models with a uniform non-zero mass spectrum we demonstrate that the resulting double-copy factors on physical poles and that up to at least 5-particle scattering, color-kinematics satisfying numerators always exist. For the scattering of 5 or more particles, the procedure generically introduces spurious singularities that must be cancelled by imposing additional constraints. When massive particle…
The dynamics of an electric charge $e$ in presence of a fixed monopole pair $\pm g$ is considered. Depending on the ratio of the angular momentum to $e\,g/c$, the effective potential may consist a minimum valley between the poles or a finite depth well. In the classical limit the charge may be bound to the poles inside the minimum valley or well. In the quantum theory, due to the finite barrier between the minimum and the potential at infinity, only approximate or quasi bound-states are possible. Based on the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method the energy and eigen-functions are obtained. The imp…
We perform lattice simulations in pure-SU(2) Yang-Mills theory to investigate how the infrared behavior of electric and magnetic gluon propagators in Landau gauge is affected by temperature. We consider the largest lattices to date, in an attempt to keep systematic errors under control. Electric and magnetic screening masses are calculated through an Ansatz from the zero-temperature case, based on complex-conjugate poles for the momentum-space propagators. As recently reported in [1], we find good fits to the proposed form at all temperatures considered, with different ratios of real to imagin…
We examine a generic field theory in which the field particle has two couplings. It is of particular interest when these are the electroweak, e, and the hypothetical magnetoweak, g. The new field operators are obtained by replacing the field operators $Ψ(x)$ of the standard model or of similar models by $\tildeΨ (x) D^j_q (m,m')$ where $ D^j_q (m,m')$ is an element of the $2j+1$ dimensional representation of the SLq(2) algebra, which is also the knot algebra. The field is assumed to exist in two phases distinguished by two values of $q$: $q_e = \frac{e}{g}$ and $q_g = \frac{g}{e}$ which label …
The classical scattering of spinning objects is well described by the spinor-helicity formalism for heavy particles. Using these variables, we derive spurious-pole-free, all-spin opposite-helicity Compton amplitudes (factorizing on physical poles to the minimal, all-spin three-point amplitudes of ref. \cite{Arkani-Hamed:2017jhn}) in the classical limit for QED, QCD, and gravity. The cured amplitudes are subject to deformations by contact terms, the vast majority of whose contributions we can fix by imposing a relation between spin structures -- motivated by lower spin multipoles of black hole …
New methods are introduced for the description and evaluation of tree-level gravitational scattering amplitudes. An N=7 super-symmetric recursion, free from spurious double poles, gives a more efficient method for evaluating MHV amplitudes. The recursion is naturally associated with twistor geometry, and thereby gives a new interpretation for the amplitudes. The recursion leads to new expressions for the MHV amplitudes for six and seven gravitons, simplifying their symmetry properties, and suggesting further generalization. The N=7 recursion is valid for all tree amplitudes, and we illustrate …
