We propose a candidate Compton amplitude which is valid for any (integer) quantum spin and free from any spurious poles. We consider the cases of electromagnetism and gravity. We obtain such amplitudes by calculating the corresponding ones from superstring theory involving states on the leading Regge trajectory. To extract the associated field-theory amplitudes a few considerations in the form of simple physical constraints are required, such as: Soft momentum transfer, compactification of polarizations and consistent factorization in the physical channels. We believe the present exploration will be significantly relevant for the physics of compact binary systems with spin.
We revisited the formalism of 11D polarized scattering equation by Geyer and Mason from the perspective of spinor frame approach and spinor moving frame formulation of the 11D ambitwistor superstring action. In particular, we rigorously obtain the equation for the spinor function on Riemann sphere from the supertwistor form of the ambitwistor superstring action, write its general solution and use it to derive the polarized scattering equation. We show that the expression used by Geyer and Mason to motivate their ansatz for the solution of polarized scattering equation can be obtained from our …
We consider scattering processes involving N gluonic massless states of open superstrings with certain Regge slope alpha'. At the semi-classical level, the string world-sheet sweeps a disk and N gluons are created or annihilated at the boundary. We present exact expressions for the corresponding amplitudes, valid to all orders in alpha', for the so-called maximally helicity violating configurations, with N=4, 5 and N=6. We also obtain the leading O(alpha'^2) string corrections to the zero-slope N-gluon Yang-Mills amplitudes.
We show that theories in which supersymmetry is broken via Scherk-Schwarz compactification at the weak scale, possess at least one scalar particle with Compton wavelength in the millimetre range, which mediates a force with strength 1/3 of gravity. Such forces are going to be explored in upcoming experiments using micro-electromechanical systems or cantilever technology. We also present a simple way of understanding some decoupling aspects of these theories by analogy with finite-temperature field theory.
We generalize the calculation of cosmic superstring reconnection probability to non-trivial backgrounds. This is done by modeling cosmic strings as wound tachyon modes in the 0B theory, and the spacetime effective action is then used to couple this to background fields. Simple examples are given including trivial and warped compactifications. Generalization to $(p,q)$ strings is discussed.
We give a new, manifestly spacetime-supersymmetric method for calculating superstring scattering amplitudes, using the ghost pyramid, that is simpler than all other known methods. No pictures nor non-vertex insertions are required other than the usual b and c ghosts of the bosonic string. We evaluate some tree and loop amplitudes as examples.
We calculate the leading-order scattering amplitude of one vector and two tensor gauge bosons in a recently proposed non-Abelian tensor gauge field theory and open superstring theory. The linear in momenta part of the superstring amplitude has identical Lorentz structure with the gauge theory, while its cubic in momenta part can be identified with an effective Lagrangian which is constructed using generalized non-Abelian field strength tensors.
In this paper we perform the calculation of the gravitational scattering amplitude for 4 massless scalars in quantum field theory and Type II superstring theory. We show that the results agree, providing an example of how gravity is incorporated in the superstring theory. During the calculation we quantize gravitational action to derive graviton propagator and interaction vertex with massless scalar. We also calculate general 3-point and 4-point scattering amplitudes in SST for open and closed massless strings in NS sector.
We derive fully covariant expressions for all two-point scattering amplitudes of two massless closed strings from a Dirichlet $p$-brane. This construction relies on the observation that there is a simple relation between these D-brane amplitudes in type II superstring theory and four-point scattering amplitudes for type I open superstrings. From the two-point amplitudes, we derive the long range background fields for the D-branes, and verify that as expected they correspond to those of extremally charged $p$-brane solutions of the low energy effective action.
The spin-4/3 fractional superstring is characterized by a chiral algebra involving a spin-4/3 current on the world-sheet in addition to the energy-momentum tensor. These currents generate physical state conditions on the fractional superstring Fock space. Scattering amplitudes of these physical states are described which satisfy both spurious state decoupling and cyclic symmetry (duality). Examples of such amplitudes are calculated using an explicit $c=5$ realization of the spin-4/3 current algebra. This representation has three flat coordinate boson fields and a global SO(2,1) Lorentz symmetr…
We discover new hard string scattering amplitudes (HSSA) with polarizations orthogonal to the scattering plane in the NS sector of 10D open superstring theory. The corresponding HSSA in the bosonic string theory are of subleading order in energy. In addition, all HSSA are found to be proportional to each other and the ratios among these HSSA are calculated to justify Gross conjecture in 1988 on high energy symmetry of string theory. Moreover, together with these new HSSA, the total number of HSSA calculated in the first massive level of NS sector are found to agree with those of hard polarized…
We reconsider the two-point string scattering amplitudes of massless Neveu-Schwarz--Neveu-Schwarz states of Type IIB orientifold superstring theory on the disk and projective plane in ten dimensions and analyse its $α'$ expansion. We also discuss the unoriented Type IIB theory on $T^6/\mathbb{Z}_2\times\mathbb{Z}_2$ where two-point string scattering amplitudes of the complex Kähler moduli and complex structures of the untwisted sector are computed on the disk and projective plane. New results are obtained together with known ones. Finally, we compare string scattering amplitudes results at $α'…
We derive fully covariant expressions for disk scattering amplitudes of any two massless closed strings in which mixed Neumann and Dirichlet world-sheet boundary conditions are included. From the two-point amplitudes, we derive the long range background fields and verify that they correspond to D$p$-brane bound state. Also, from the scattering amplitudes, we calculate the linear coupling of closed string fields to D-brane world-volume and show that they are consistent with Born-Infeld and Chern-Simons actions in the presence of a background field.
The new spacetime-supersymmetric description of the superstring is used to compute tree-level scattering amplitudes for an arbitrary number of massless four-dimensional states. The resulting Koba-Nielsen formula is manifestly SO(3,1) super-Poincare invariant and is easily generalized to scattering in the presence of a D-brane.
In this paper we continue the program pioneered by D'Hoker and Phong, and recently advanced by Cacciatori, Dalla Piazza, and van Geemen, of finding the chiral superstring measure by constructing modular forms satisfying certain factorization constraints. We give new expressions for their proposed ansätze in genera 2 and 3, respectively, which admit a straightforward generalization. We then propose an ansatz in genus 4 and verify that it satisfies the factorization constraints and gives a vanishing cosmological constant. We further conjecture a possible formula for the superstring amplitudes in…
We use three different methods to calculate the proportionality constants among high-energy scattering amplitudes of different string states with polarizations on the scattering plane. These are the decoupling of high-energy zero-norm states (HZNS), the Virasoro constraints and the saddle-point calculation. These calculations are performed at arbitrary but fixed mass level for the NS sector of 10D open superstring. All three methods give the consistent results, which generalize the previous works on the high-energy 26D open bosonic string theory. In addition, we discover new leading order high…
Scattering amplitudes of the spin-4/3 fractional superstring are shown to satisfy spurious state decoupling and cyclic symmetry (duality) at tree-level in the string perturbation expansion. This fractional superstring is characterized by the spin-4/3 fractional superconformal algebra---a parafermionic algebra studied by Zamolodchikov and Fateev involving chiral spin-4/3 currents on the world-sheet in addition to the stress-energy tensor. Examples of tree scattering amplitudes are calculated in an explicit c=5 representation of this fractional superconformal algebra realized in terms of free bo…
We study single, double and higher-order nonlinear Compton scattering where an electron interacts nonlinearly with a high-intensity laser and emits one, two or more photons. We study, in particular, how double Compton scattering is separated into one-step and two-step parts, where the latter is obtained from an incoherent product of two single-photon emissions. We include all contributions to double Compton scattering and show that the exchange term, which was not calculated in previous constant-crossed field studies, is in general on the same order of magnitude as the other one-step terms. Ou…
We compute scattering amplitudes of leading Regge trajectory states in open superstring theories. Highest spin states at mass level n with spin s=n+1 for bosons and s=n+1/2 for fermions are generated by particularly simple vertex operators. Hence, the cubic couplings of bosons and fermions on the leading Regge trajectory are given for arbitrary n. The same can be achieved for higher point amplitudes, and this article focuses on four point level with one heavy maximum spin state and three massless states in any bose-fermi combination, putting particular emphasis on manifest cyclic symmetry. Exc…
We study the doubly virtual Compton scattering off a spinless target $γ^*P\toγ^*P'$ within the Anti-de Sitter(AdS)/QCD formalism. We find that the general structure allowed by the Lorentz invariance and gauge invariance of the Compton amplitude is not easily reproduced with the standard recipes of the AdS/QCD correspondence. In the soft-photon regime, where the semi-classical approximation is supposed to apply best, we show that the measurements of the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of a target like the charged pion in real Compton scattering, can already serve as stringent tests.
In this PhD thesis we study holomorphic and non-holomorphic elliptic analogues of multiple zeta values, namely elliptic multiple zeta values and modular graph functions. Both classes of functions have been discovered very recently, and are involved in the computation of genus one superstring amplitudes. In particular, we obtain new results on the asymptotic expansion of these functions that allow us to perform explicit computations and point out analogies between genus zero and genus one amplitudes.
We further analyze the holographic dipole-dipole scattering amplitude developed in arXiv:1202.0831, 1205.3223. Gribov diffusion at strong coupling yields the scattering amplitude in a confining background. We compare the holographic result for the differential cross section to proton-proton and deeply virtual Compton scattering data.
Using pure spinors, the superstring was recently quantized in a manifestly ten-dimensional super-Poincaré covariant manner and a covariant prescription was given for tree-level scattering amplitudes. In this paper, we prove that this prescription is cyclically symmetric and, for the scattering of an arbitrary number of massless bosons and up to four massless fermions, it agrees with the standard Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz prescription.
We calculate on-shell scattering amplitudes involving fermions at the tree level in open superstring field theory. We confirm that four-point and five-point amplitudes in the world-sheet path integral with the standard prescription using picture-changing operators are reproduced. For the four-point amplitudes, we find that the quartic interaction required by gauge invariance adjusts the different assignment of picture-changing operators in the $s$-channel and in the $t$-channel of Feynman diagrams with two cubic vertices. For the five-point amplitudes, the correct amplitudes are reproduced in …
The spin-4/3 fractional superstring is characterized by a world-sheet chiral algebra involving spin-4/3 currents. The discussion of the tree-level scattering amplitudes of this theory presented in hepth/9310131 is expanded to include amplitudes containing two twisted-sector states. These amplitudes are shown to satisfy spurious state decoupling. The restriction to only two external twisted-sector states is due to the absence of an appropriate dimension-one vertex describing the emission of a single twisted-sector state. This is analogous to the ``old covariant'' formalism of ordinary superstri…
We write the vertex operators of massless NS-NS and RR states of Type II superstring theory in the presence of Orientifold p-planes. They include the usual vertex operators of Type II theory and their images. We then calculate the two-point functions of these vertex operators at the projective plane PR_2 level. We show that the result can be written in the Veneziano-type formulae, with the same kinematic factor that appears in the D_p-branes amplitudes. While the scattering amplitudes with the usual vertex operators are not gauge invariant, the above amplitudes are invariant. From the amplitud…
We rewrite the SL(2,Z) covariant worldsheet action for the IIB string proposed by Townsend in a Polyakov form. In a flat background the formalism yields separate (p,q) sectors. In each one the action is that of the IIB string action with the string slope parameter \alp\pr replaced by its SL(2,Z) analogue \alp_{pq}\pr. SL(2,Z) invariant graviton scattering amplitudes are obtained from those of the fundamental (1,0) string by summing over the different sectors. The tree-level four-graviton amplitude in this formalism differs from a previously conjectured non-perturbative form; both yield the sam…
We derive the complete five-gluon scattering amplitude at tree level, within the context of Open Superstring theory. We find the general expression in terms of kinematic factors, and also find its complete expansion up to ${\cal O}({α'}^3)$ terms. We use our scattering amplitude to test three non-equivalent ${\cal O}({α'}^3)$ effective lagrangians that have recently been matter of some controversy.
We study the Regge and hard scattering limits of the one-loop amplitude for massless open string states in the type I theory. For hard scattering we find the exact coefficient multiplying the known exponential falloff in terms of the scattering angle, without relying on a saddle point approximation for the integration over the cross ratio. This bypasses the issues of estimating the contributions from flat directions, as well as those that arise from fluctuations of the gaussian integration about a saddle point. This result allows for a straightforward computation of the small- angle behavior o…
We study the nonforward Compton scattering in particular the deeply virtual Compton scattering from AdS/CFT. We first calculate the contributions from the s-channel and u-channel supergravity diagrams as well as the four point interaction diagram which correspond to the Compton scatterings on a dilaton target in CFT. Furthermore, we study the Compton scattering on a dilatino target. Assuming that protons can be identified as supergravity modes of dilatino, we compare the calculated DVCS cross section to the low-energy experimental data from the H1 and ZEUS collaborations and find good agreemen…
In this paper we show that the two-point function for the three-loop chiral superstring measure ansatz proposed by Cacciatori, Dalla Piazza, and van Geemen vanishes. Our proof uses the reformulation of ansatz in terms of even cosets, theta functions, and specifically the theory of the $Γ_{00}$ linear system on Jacobians introduced by van Geemen and van der Geer. At the two-loop level, where the amplitudes were computed by D'Hoker and Phong, we give a new proof of the vanishing of the two-point function (which was proven by them). We also discuss the possible approaches to proving the vanishing…
This thesis discusses how the pure spinor formalism can be used to efficiently compute superstring scattering amplitudes. We emphasize the pure spinor superspace form of the kinematic factors, where the simplifying features of this language have allowed an explicit relation among the massless four-point amplitudes at tree-level, one- and two-loops to be found. We show how these identities elegantly simplify the task of computing the amplitudes for all possible external state combination related by supersymmetry. In particular, the two-loop amplitudes involving fermionic states had never been c…
We calculate four classes of high energy massive string scattering amplitudes of fermionic string theory at arbitrary mass levels in the Regge regime (RR). We show that all four leading order amplitudes in the RR can be expressed in terms of the Kummer function of the second kind. Based on the summation algorithm of a set of extended signed Stirling number identities, we show that all four ratios calculated previously by the method of decoupling of zero-norm states among scattering amplitudes in the Gross Regime (GR) can be extracted from this Kummer function in the RR. Finally, we conjecture …
We compute the scattering amplitudes of four massless states for chiral (closed) bosonic and type II superstrings using the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye ($KLT$) factorization method. The amplitude in the chiral bosonic case is identical to a field theory amplitude corresponding to the spin-$2$ tachyon, massless gravitational sector and massive spin-2 tardyon states of the spectrum. Chiral type II superstrings amplitude only possess poles associated with the massless gravitational sector. We briefly discuss the extension of the calculation to heterotic superstrings.
S and U-duality dictate that graviton scattering amplitudes in IIB superstring theory be automorphic functions on the appropriate fundamental domain which describe the inequivalent vacua of (compactified) theories. A constrained functional form of graviton scattering is proposed using Eisenstein series and their generalizations compatible with: a) two-loop supergravity, b) genus one superstring theory, c) the perturbative coupling dependence of the superstring, and d) with the unitarity structure of the massless modes. The form has a perturbative truncation in the genus expansion at a given or…
We identify spacetime symmetry charges of the bosonic sector of 10D superstring theory from an infinite number of zero-norm states (ZNS) in the old covariant first quantized string spectrum. We give evidences to support this identification. These include supersymmetric sigma-model calculation, 2D super-Liouville theory calculation and, most importantly, three methods of high-energy scattering amplitude calculations. These calculations generalize the previous bosonic string calculations, which explicitly prove Gross's conjectures in 1988 on high energy symmetry of string theory. Moreover, we di…
We consider how to normalize the scattering amplitudes of 4D heterotic superstrings in a Minkowski background. We fix the normalization of the vacuum amplitude (the string partition function) at each genus, and of every vertex operator describing a physical external string state in a way consistent with unitarity of the $S$-matrix. We also provide an explicit expression for the map relating the vertex operator of an incoming physical state to the vertex operator describing the same physical state, but outgoing. This map is related to hermitean conjugation and to the hermiticity properties of t…
Using the non-minimal version of the pure spinor formalism, manifestly super-Poincare covariant superstring scattering amplitudes can be computed as in topological string theory without the need of picture-changing operators. The only subtlety comes from regularizing the functional integral over the pure spinor ghosts. In this paper, it is shown how to regularize this functional integral in a BRST-invariant manner, allowing the computation of arbitrary multiloop amplitudes. The regularization method simplifies for scattering amplitudes which contribute to ten-dimensional F-terms, i.e. terms in…
The recently proposed eight-component relativistic wave equation is applied to the scattering of a photon from a free electron (Compton scattering). It is found that in spite of the considerable difference in the structure of this equation and that of Dirac the cross section is given by the Klein-Nishina formula.
The interplay of unitarity and analyticity has long been known to impose strong constraints on scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory and string theory. This has been highlighted in recent times in a number of papers and lecture notes. Here we examine such conditions in the context of superstring tree-level scattering amplitudes, leading to positivity constraints on determinants of Hankel matrices involving polynomials of multiple zeta values. These generalise certain constraints on polynomials of single zeta values in the mathematics literature.
The physical states of D=5 holomorphic Chern-Simons theory correspond to on-shell D=10 open superstring states in the cohomology of $q_+$, where $q_+$ is one of the 16 spacetime supersymmetry generators. Scattering amplitudes of these states can be computed either using the usual Ramond-Neveu-Schwarz (RNS) superstring prescription with N=1 worldsheet supersymmetry, or using a topological $\hat c$=5 string theory with twisted N=2 worldsheet supersymmetry. It will be argued that the relation between D=5 holomophic Chern-Simons and the RNS superstring is identical to the relation between the the …
We explicitly compute the Compton amplitude for the scattering of a photon and a (massless) ``electron/positron'' at tree level and one loop, in a four-dimensional fermionic heterotic string model. We comment on the relationship between the amplitudes we compute in string theory and the corresponding ones in field theory.
We present a derivation of the scattering amplitude prescription for the pure spinor superstring from first principles, both in the minimal and non-minimal formulations, and show that they are equivalent. This is achieved by first coupling the worldsheet action to topological gravity and then proceeding to BRST quantize this system. Our analysis includes the introduction of constant ghosts and associated auxiliary fields needed to gauge fix symmetries associated with zero modes. All fields introduced in the process of quantization can be integrated out explicitly, resulting in the prescription…
We derive an all order resummation formula for the deeply virtual Compton scattering (DVCS) amplitude, which takes into account soft gluon exchanges in the non-singlet quark coefficient function. We identify the ladder diagrams responsible in light-like gauge for [alphaS log^2 (x +/- xi)]^n contributions. The resummed series results in a simple closed expression.
Several arguments are given for the summability of the superstring perturbation series. Whereas the Schottky group coordinatization of moduli space may be used to provide refined estimates of large-order bosonic string amplitudes, the super-Schottky group variables define a measure for the supermoduli space integral which leads to upper bounds on superstring scattering amplitudes.
In this work, according to some evidence from being an asymmetry in the number density of left and right-handed electrons, $δ_L$, in-universe motivate us to calculate the dominated contribution of this asymmetry in the generation of B-mode power spectrum $C_{ B\,l}^{(S)}$. Note, in the standard cosmological scenario, Compton scattering in the presence of scalar matter perturbation can not generate magnetic like pattern in linear polarization while in the case of polarized Compton scattering, we have shown $C_{B\,l}^{(S)}\propto δ_L^2$. We add up the spectrum of the B-mode generated by the pola…
In this paper, the cross section for the Compton scattering process at finite temperature is calculated. Temperature effects are introduced using the Thermofield Dynamics (TFD) formalism. It is a real-time finite temperature quantum field theory. Our result shows that thermal effects become relevant as the temperature increases. A comparison between the TFD and closed-time path results is presented.
By defining the heterotic Green-Schwarz superstring action on an N=(2,0) super-worldsheet, rather than on an ordinary worldsheet, many problems with the interacting Green-Schwarz superstring formalism can be solved. In the light-cone approach, superconformally transforming the light-cone super-worldsheet onto an N=(2,0) super-Riemann surface allows the elimination of the non-trivial interaction-point operators that complicate the evaluation of scattering amplitudes. In the Polyakov approach, the ten-dimensional heterotic Green-Schwarz covariant action defined on an N=(2,0) super-worldsheet can…
In this work we report on recent progress in the calculation of open superstring scattering amplitudes, at tree level, with more than four external massless states. We also report on the corresponding terms in the low energy effective lagrangian.
The theoretical cross section for Compton scattering of maximally entangled Bell photons has yet to be rigorously confirmed by experiments. Test cases of Bell states for use in Compton scattering experiments can now be expanded given reports of creating all 4 Bell states in the hard X-ray regime by the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We outline an experiment and apply a matrix method to parameterize Compton scattering theory using the phase matching angles. When the azimuths of two hypothetical photon counters are recorded at angles of 0 degrees and 90 degrees, and the ratio…
We consider the action of the $q$-deformed Poincaré superalgebra on the massless non-relativistic R-matrix in ordinary (undeformed) integrable $AdS_2 \times S^2 \times T^6$ type IIB superstring theory. The boost generator acts non-trivially on the R-matrix, confirming the existence of a non-relativistic rapidity $γ$ with respect to which the R-matrix must be of difference form. We conjecture that from a massless AdS/CFT integrable relativistic R-matrix one can obtain the parental massless non-relativistic R-matrix simply by replacing the relativistic rapidity with $γ$. We check our conjecture …
