In this work, according to some evidence from being an asymmetry in the number density of left and right-handed electrons, $δ_L$, in-universe motivate us to calculate the dominated contribution of this asymmetry in the generation of B-mode power spectrum $C_{ B\,l}^{(S)}$. Note, in the standard cosmological scenario, Compton scattering in the presence of scalar matter perturbation can not generate magnetic like pattern in linear polarization while in the case of polarized Compton scattering, we have shown $C_{B\,l}^{(S)}\propto δ_L^2$. We add up the spectrum of the B-mode generated by the polarized Compton scattering to the spectra produced by weak lensing effects and Compton scattering in the presence of tensor perturbations. The results show a significant amplification in $C_{B\,l}$ in large scale $l<500$ for $δ_L>10^{-6}$ which will be observable in future high resolution B-mode polarization detection. Finally, we have shown that $C_{ B\,l}^{(S)}$ generated by polarized Compton scattering can suppress the tensor to scalar ratio, $r$ parameter so that this contamination can be comparable to a primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio spatially for $δ_L>10^{-5}$.
The standard scenario of cosmology predicts a measurable amount for linear polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) via Thomson scattering, while through this scenario, the generation of circular polarization is excluded. On the another hand, the circular polarization of CMB has not been excluded in observational evidence. The generation of CMB photons circular polarization via their Compton scattering with polarized cosmic electrons is considered in this paper. Our motivation for considering polarized Compton scattering comes from the effects of the external magnetic fi…
If the large scale structure of the Universe was created, even partially, via Zeldovich pancakes, than the fluctuations of the CMB radiation should be formed due to bulk comptonization of black body spectrum on the contracting pancake. Approximate formulas for the CMB energy spectrum after bulk comptonization are obtained. The difference between comptonized energy spectra of the CMB due to thermal and bulk comptonization may be estimated by comparison of the plots for the spectra in these two cases.
We study the inverse Compton scattering of the CMB photons off nonthermal high-energy electrons. In the previous study, assuming the power-law distribution for electrons, we derived the analytic expression for the spectral intensity function $I(ω)$ in the Thomson approximation, which was applicable up to the photon energies of $ω<$ O(GeV). In the present paper, we extend the previous work to higher photon energies of $ω>$ O(GeV) by taking into account the terms dropped in the Thomson approximation, i.e., the Klein-Nishina formula. The analytic expression for $I(ω)$ is derived with the Klein-Ni…
On the basis of the quantum Boltzmann equation governing the time-evolution of the density matrix of polarized CMB photons in the primordial scalar perturbations of metric, we calculate the B-mode spectrum of polarized CMB photons contributed from the scattering of CMB photons and CNB neutrinos (Cosmic Neutrino Background). We show that such contribution to the B-mode spectrum is negligible for small $\ell$, however is significantly large for $50 < \ell< 200$ by plotting our results together with the BICEP2 data. Our study and results imply that in order to theoretically better understand the …
A fully QED/relativistic theory of light pressure of CMB radiation and Fokker-Planck equation for electron distribution combined with cosmologic relation for CMB temperature, T, yields analytic results for the evolution of the distribution over large span of time and energies. A strong imprint of CMB on electrons transpires via formation of "frozen non-equilibrium" state of electrons in current epoch, and possible existence of cutoff and narrow spectral lines as remnants of high-T sources.
Measurements of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies on large angular scales have uncovered a number of anomalous features of marginal statistical significance, such as a hemispherical power asymmetry, lack of power on large angular scales, and features in the power spectrum. Because the primary CMB temperature has been measured at the cosmic variance limit, determining if these anomalies are hints of new physics as opposed to foregrounds, systematics, or simply statistical flukes, requires new observables. In this paper, we highlight the potential contribution that f…
The PLANCK satellite mission has been launched the 14th of May 2009 and is dedicated to the measurement of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in temperature and polarization. The presence of diffuse galactic polarized emission contaminates the measurement of the CMB anisotropies, in particular in polarization. Therefore a good knowledge of these emissions is needed to the accuracy required for PLANCK. In this context, we have developed and implemented a coherent 3D model of the two main polarized galactic emissions : synchrotron radiation and thermal dust. We have compared these models to t…
We combine the latest datasets obtained with different surveys to study the frequency dependence of polarized emission coming from Extragalactic Radio Sources (ERS). We consider data over a very wide frequency range starting from $1.4$ GHz up to $217$ GHz. This range is particularly interesting since it overlaps the frequencies of the current and forthcoming Cosmic Microwave Background (\cmb) experiments. Current data suggest that at high radio frequencies, ($ ν\geq 20$ GHz) the fractional polarization of ERS does not depend on the total flux density. Conversely, recent datasets indicate a mod…
Upcoming cosmic microwave background (CMB) surveys will soon make the first detection of the polarized Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, the linear polarization generated by the scattering of CMB photons on the free electrons present in collapsed objects. Measurement of this polarization along with knowledge of the electron density of the objects allows a determination of the quadrupolar temperature anisotropy of the CMB as viewed from the space-time location of the objects. Maps of these remote temperature quadrupoles have several cosmological applications. Here we propose a new application: reconst…
We revisit the cosmological constraints on resonant and non-resonant conversion of photons to axions in the cosmological magnetic fields. We find that the constraints on photon-axion coupling and primordial magnetic fields are much weaker than previously claimed for low mass axion like particles with masses $m_{\rm a} \lesssim 5\times 10^{-13}\,\text{eV}$. In particular we find that the axion mass range $10^{-14}\,\text{eV} \le m_{\rm a} \le 5\times 10^{-13}\,\text{eV}$ is not excluded by the CMB data contrary to the previous claims. We also examine the photon-axion conversion in the Galactic …
We propose a new reionization probe that uses cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations; the cross-correlation between fluctuations in the CMB optical depth which probes the integrated electron density, $δτ$, and the Compton $y$-map which probes the integrated electron pressure. This cross-correlation is much less contaminated than the $y$-map power spectrum by late-time cluster contributions. In addition, this cross-correlation can constrain the temperature of ionized bubbles while the optical-depth fluctuations and kinetic SZ effect can not. We measure this new observable using a Planck…
Polarized foregrounds are going to be a serious challenge for detecting CMB cosmological B-modes. Both diffuse Galactic emission and extragalactic sources contribute significantly to the power spectrum on large angular scales. At low frequencies, Galactic synchrotron emission will dominate with fractional polarization $\sim 20-40%$ at high latitudes while radio sources can contribute significantly even on large ($\sim 1^{\circ}$) angular scales. Nevertheless, simulations suggest that a detection at the level of $r=0.001$ might be achievable if the foregrounds are not too complex.
It is known that in contrast with the E-mode polarization, the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background cannot be generated by the Compton scattering in the case of scalar mode of metric perturbation. However it is possible to generate the B-mode by the Compton scattering in the case of tensor mode of metric perturbation. For this reason, the ratio of tensor to scalar modes of metric perturbation ($r\sim C_{Bl}/C_{El}$) is estimated by comparing the B-mode power spectrum with the E-mode at least for small $l$. We study the CMB polarization specially B-mode due to the weak interac…
This work is point of the preparation to the analysis of the PLANCK satellite data. The PLANCK satellite is an ESA mission which has been launched the 14th of may 2009 and is dedicaced to the measurement of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in temperature and polarization. The presence of diffuse Galactic polarized emissions disturb the measurement of the CMB anisotropies, in particular in polarization. Therefore a precise knowledge of these emissions is needed to obtain the level of accuracy required for PLANCK. In this context, we have developed and implemented a coherent 3D model of the…
The Planck satellite experiment, which was launched the 14th of may 2009, will give an accurate measurement of the anisotropies of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) in temperature and polarization. This measurement is polluted by the presence of diffuse galactic polarized foreground emissions. In order to obtain the level of accuracy required for the Planck mission it is necessary to deal with these foregrounds. In order to do this, have develloped and implemented coherent 3D models of the two main galactic polarized emissions : the synchrotron and thermal dust emissions. We have optimized…
The next generation of CMB experiments (CMB Stage-4) will produce a Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) cluster catalog containing $\sim10^{5}$ objects, two orders of magnitudes more than currently available. In this paper, we discuss the detectability of the polarized signal generated by scattering of the CMB quadrupole on the cluster electron gas using this catalog. We discuss the possibility of using this signal to measure the relationship between cluster optical depth and mass. We find that the area of observation of S4 maximizes the signal-to-noise (S/N) on the polarized signal but that this S/N is e…
The detection and characterization of primordial gravitational waves through their impact on the polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is a primary science goal of current and future observations of the CMB. An ancillary dataset that will become accessible with the great leaps in sensitivity of CMB experiments is the polarized Sunyaev Zel'dovich (pSZ) effect, small-scale CMB polarization anisotropies induced by scattering from free electrons in the post-reionization Universe. The cross correlation of the pSZ effect with galaxy surveys, a technique known as pSZ tomo…
Next generation CMB experiments such as CMB-S4 aim at measuring the CMB lensing potential at sub-percent precision where most of the constraining power will come from CMB polarization. We investigate the prospects of achieving this goal in the presence of large-scale, diffuse galactic foreground emission by using non-Gaussian sky simulations and exploit multi-frequency information to clean those. We show that, while prior to foreground cleaning, cosmological parameter estimates from the contaminated lensing potential estimation can be significantly biased, these can be successfully mitigated b…
We compute the circularly polarized signal from atmospheric molecular oxygen. Polarization of O2 rotational lines is caused by Zeeman effect in the Earth magnetic field. We evaluate the circularly polarized emission for various sites suitable for CMB measurements: South Pole and Dome C (Antarctica), Atacama (Chile) and Testa Grigia (Italy). An analysis of the polarized signal is presented and discussed in the framework of future CMB polarization experiments. We find a typical circularly polarized signal (V Stokes parameter) of ~ 50 - 300 μK at 90 GHz looking at the zenith. Among the other site…
We compute the polarized signal from atmospheric molecular oxygen due to Zeeman effect in the Earth magnetic field for various sites suitable for CMB measurements such as South Pole, Dome C (Antarctica) and Atacama desert (Chile). We present maps of this signal for those sites and show their typical elevation and azimuth dependencies. We find a typical circularly polarized signal (V Stokes parameter) level of 50 - 300 μK at 90 GHz when looking at the zenith; Atacama site shows the lowest emission while Dome C site presents the lowest gradient in polarized brightness temperature (0.3 μK/deg at …
Science opportunities and recommendations concerning optical/infrared polarimetry for the upcoming decade in the field of cosmology. Community-based White Paper to Astro2010 in response to the call for such papers.
According to the standard cosmology, near the last scattering surface, the photons scattered via Compton scattering are just linearly polarized and then the primordial circular polarization of the CMB photons is zero. In this work we show that CMB polarization acquires a small degree of circular polarization when a background magnetic field is considered or the quantum electrodynamic sector of standard model is extended by Lorentz-noninvariant operators as well as noncommutativity. The existence of circular polarization for the CMB radiation may be verified during future observation programs a…
The blackbody spectrum of CMB was created in the blackbody photosphere at redshifts z>2x10^6. At these early times, the Universe was dense and hot enough that complete thermal equilibrium between baryonic matter (electrons and ions) and photons could be established. Any perturbation away from the blackbody spectrum was suppressed exponentially. New physics, for example annihilation and decay of dark matter, can add energy and photons to CMB at redshifts z>10^5 and result in a Bose-Einstein spectrum with a non-zero chemical potential ($μ$). Precise evolution of the CMB spectrum around the criti…
The polarization modes of the cosmological microwave background are an invaluable source of information for cosmology, and a unique window to probe the energy scale of inflation. Extracting such information from microwave surveys requires disentangling between foreground emissions and the cosmological signal, which boils down to solving a component separation problem. Component separation techniques have been widely studied for the recovery of CMB temperature anisotropies but quite rarely for the polarization modes. In this case, most component separation techniques make use of second-order st…
The non-polarized points (NPP) of the $Q$ and $U$ Stokes parameters of the CMB can be classified according to the geometry of the polarization field. We describe a procedure to identify these points in the pixelized sky and present the shape of the polarization angles in the vicinity of NPPs. We design a test of Gaussianity using the Kullback-Leibler divergence. We show that the total number density of non-polarized points of the E- and B-families is closely related to the presence of lensing and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. We further show that in the absence of lensing, the total number o…
Foreground removal techniques for CMB analyses make specific assumptions about the properties of foregrounds in temperature and in polarization. By investigating the statistics of foreground components more understanding about the degree to which these assumptions are valid can be obtained. In this work we investigate $E$- and $B$-mode maps of the two strongest polarized foregrounds, synchrotron and thermal dust emission, with regards to their similarity with Gaussian processes, their spectral variations and cross-correlations. We perform tests in patches of $\sim3.7^\circ$ size collectively c…
We study the inverse Compton scattering of the CMB photons off high-energy nonthermal electrons. We extend the formalism obtained by the previous paper to the case where the electrons have non-zero bulk motions with respect to the CMB frame. Assuming the power-law electron distribution, we find the same scaling law for the probability distribution function P_{1,K}(s) as P_{1}(s) which corresponds to the zero bulk motions, where the peak height and peak position depend only on the power-index parameter. We solved the rate equation analytically. It is found that the spectral intensity function a…
We consider the effect of modified gravity on the peak structure of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) spectrum. We focus on simple models of modified gravity mediated by a massive scalar field coupled to both baryons and cold dark matter. This captures the features of chameleon, symmetron, dilaton and $f(R)$ models. We find that the CMB peaks can be affected in three independent ways provided the Compton radius of the massive scalar is not far-off the sound horizon at last scattering. When the coupling of the massive scalar to Cold Dark Matter (CDM) is large, the anomalous growth of the CD…
Characterizing accurately the polarized dust emission from our Galaxy will be decisive for the quest for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) primordial $B$-modes. The incomplete modeling of its potentially complex spectral properties could lead to biases in the CMB polarization analyses and to a spurious detection of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. Variations of the dust properties along and between lines of sight lead to unavoidable distortions of the spectral energy distribution (SED) that can not be easily anticipated by standard component separation methods. This issue can be tackled usi…
The kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich (kSZ) and polarized Sunyaev Zel'dovich (pSZ) effects are temperature and polarization anisotropies induced by the scattering of CMB photons from structure in the post-reionization Universe. In the case of the kSZ effect, small angular scale anisotropies in the optical depth are modulated by the cosmic microwave background (CMB) dipole field, i.e. the CMB dipole observed at each spacetime point, which is sourced by the primordial dipole and especially the local peculiar velocity. In the case of the pSZ effect, similar small-scale anisotropies are modulated by the …
We report the detection of extended X-ray emission around two powerful high-z radio galaxies (HzRGs) at z~3.6 (4C03.24 & 4C19.71) and use these to investigate the origin of extended, Inverse Compton (IC) powered X-ray halos at high z. The halos have X-ray luminosities of Lx~3e44 erg/s and sizes of ~60kpc. Their morphologies are broadly similar to the ~60-kpc long radio lobes around these galaxies suggesting they are formed from IC scattering by relativistic electrons in the radio lobes, of either CMB or FIR photons from the dust-obscured starbursts in these galaxies. These observations double …
Recent polarimetric surveys of extragalactic radio sources (ERS) at frequencies ν>1GHz are reviewed. By exploiting all the most relevant data on the polarized emission of ERS we study the frequency dependence of polarization properties of ERS between 1.4 and 86GHz. For flat-spectrum sources the median (mean) fractional polarization increases from 1.5% (2-2.5%) at 1.4GHz to 2.5-3% (3-3.5%) at ν>10GHz. Steep-spectrum sources are typically more polarized, especially at high frequencies where Faraday depolarization is less relevant. As a general result, we do not find that the fractional polarizat…
If the physics behind dark energy and/or dark matter violates the parity symmetry assumed in the standard cosmological paradigm, the linear polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons can rotate due to their coupling to the dark sector. Recent 3$σ$ hints of this ``cosmic birefringence" in the EB spectrum of the CMB polarization motivates us to pursue new directions to independently validate and characterize the signal. Here, we explore the prospects to probe cosmic birefringence from small-scale fluctuations in the CMB using polarized Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (pSZ) tomography. We f…
Detection of B-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation is one of the frontiers of observational cosmology. Because they are an order of magnitude fainter than E-modes, it is quite a challenge to detect B-modes. Having more manageable systematics, interferometers prove to have a substantial advantage over imagers in detecting such faint signals. Here, we present a method for Bayesian inference of power spectra and signal reconstruction from interferometric data of the CMB polarization signal by using the technique of Gibbs sampling. We demonstrate the validity of th…
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) photons that scatter off free electrons in the large-scale structure induce a linear polarization pattern proportional to the remote CMB temperature quadrupole observed in the electrons' rest frame. The associated blackbody polarization anisotropies are known as the polarized Sunyaev Zel'dovich (pSZ) effect. Relativistic corrections to the remote quadrupole field give rise to a non-blackbody polarization anisotropy proportional to the square of the transverse peculiar velocity field; this is the kinetic polarized Sunyaev Zel'dovich (kpSZ) effect. In this p…

We present component-separated maps of the primary cosmic microwave background/kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) amplitude and the thermal SZ Compton-$y$ parameter, created using data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and the Planck satellite. These maps, which cover the $\sim$2500 square degrees of the Southern sky imaged by the SPT-SZ survey, represent a significant improvement over previous such products available in this region by virtue of their higher angular resolution (1.25 arcminutes for our highest resolution Compton-$y$ maps) and lower noise at small angular scales. In this work w…

Current and future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) Radiation experiments are targeting the polarized $B$-mode signal. The small amplitude of this signal makes a successful measurement challenging for current technologies. Therefore, very accurate studies to mitigate and control possible systematic effects are vital to achieve a successful observation. An additional challenge is coming from the presence of polarized Galactic foreground signals that contaminate the CMB signal. When they are combined, the foreground signals dominate the polarized CMB signal at almost every relevant frequency. F…
Using Planck polarization data, we search for and constrain spatial variations of the polarized dust foreground for cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations, specifically in its spectral index, $β_d$. Failure to account for such variations will cause errors in the foreground cleaning that propagate into errors on cosmological parameter recovery from the cleaned CMB map. It is unclear how robust prior studies of the Planck data which constrained $β_d$ variations are due to challenges with noise modeling, residual systematics, and priors. To clarify constraints on $β_d$ and its variation, …
We present a new model of the microwave sky in polarization that can be used to simulate data from CMB polarization experiments. We exploit the most recent results from the Planck satellite to provide an accurate description of the diffuse polarized foreground synchrotron and thermal dust emission. Our model can include the two mentioned foregrounds, and also a constructed template of Anomalous Microwave Emission (AME). Several options for the frequency dependence of the foregrounds can be easily selected, to reflect our uncertainties and to test the impact of different assumptions. Small angu…
The thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect is the distortion generated in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) spectrum by the inverse-Compton scattering of CMB photons off free, energetic electrons, primarily located in the intracluster medium (ICM). Cosmic infrared background (CIB) photons from thermal dust emission in star-forming galaxies are expected to undergo the same process. In this work, we perform the first calculation of the resulting tSZ-like distortion in the CIB. Focusing on the CIB monopole, we use a halo model approach to calculate both the CIB signal and the Compton-$y$ fie…
The measurement and characterization of the lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is key goal of the current and next generation of CMB experiments. We perform a case study of a three-channel balloon-borne CMB experiment observing the sky at (l,b)=(250deg,-38deg) and attaining a sensitivity of 5.25 muK-arcmin with 8' angular resolution at 150 GHz, in order to assess whether the effect of polarized Galactic dust is expected to be a significant contaminant to the lensing signal reconstructed using the EB quadratic estimator. We find that for our assumed dust model, polarization fracti…
CMB spectral distortions are induced by Compton collisions with electrons. We review the various schemes to characterize the anisotropic CMB with a non-Planckian spectrum. We advocate using logarithmically averaged temperature moments as the preferred language to describe these spectral distortions, both for theoretical modeling and observations. Numerical modeling is simpler, the moments are frame-independent, and in terms of scattering the mode truncation is exact.
The statistics of the temperature anisotropies in the primordial cosmic microwave background radiation field provide a wealth of information for cosmology and for estimating cosmological parameters. An even more acute inference should stem from the study of maps of the polarization state of the CMB radiation. Measuring the extremely weak CMB polarization signal requires very sensitive instruments. The full-sky maps of both temperature and polarization anisotropies of the CMB to be delivered by the upcoming Planck Surveyor satellite experiment are hence being awaited with excitement. Multiscale…
Repeated Compton scattering of photons with thermal electrons is one of the fundamental processes at work in many astrophysical plasma. Solving the exact evolution equations is hard and one common simplification is based on Fokker-Planck (FP) approximations of the Compton collision term. Here we carry out a detailed numerical comparison of several FP approaches with the exact scattering kernel solution for a range of test problems assuming isotropic media and thermal electrons at various temperatures. The Kompaneets equation, being one of the most widely used FP approximations, fails to accoun…
Polarized Galactic synchrotron emission is an undesirable foreground for cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments observing at frequencies $< 150$ GHz. We perform a combined analysis of observational data at 1.4, 2.3, 23, 30 and 33 GHz to quantify the spatial variation of the polarized synchrotron spectral index, $β^{pol}$, on $\sim3.5^\circ$ scales. We compare results from different data combinations to address limitations and inconsistencies present in these public data, and form a composite map of $β^{pol}$. Data quality masking leaves 44% sky coverage (73% for $|b|> 45^\circ$). Genera…
We extend the pure pseudo-power-spectrum formalism proposed recently in the context of the Cosmic Microwave Background polarized power spectra estimation by Smith (2006) to incorporate cross-spectra computed for multiple maps of the same sky area. We present an implementation of such a technique, paying particular attention to a calculation of the relevant window functions and mixing (mode-coupling) matrices. We discuss the relevance and treatment of the residual $E/B$ leakage for a number of considered sky apodizations as well as compromises and assumptions involved in an optimization of the …
Giant radio galaxy (GRG) lobes are excellent laboratories to study the evolution of the particle and B-field energetics. However, these results are based on assumptions of the shape and extension of the GRG lobe electron spectrum. We re-examine the energetics of GRG lobes as derived by inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons (ICS-CMB) by relativistic electrons in RG lobes to assess the physical conditions of RG lobes, their energetics and their radiation regime. We consider the GRG DA 240 recently observed by Suzaku as a reference case and we also discuss other RG lobes observed with Chandra…
CMB experiments aiming at a precise measurement of the CMB polarization, such as the Planck satellite, need a strong polarized absolute calibrator on the sky to accurately set the detectors polarization angle and the cross-polarization leakage. As the most intense polarized source in the microwave sky at angular scales of few arcminutes, the Crab nebula will be used for this purpose. Our goal was to measure the Crab nebula polarization characteristics at 90 GHz with unprecedented precision. The observations were carried out with the IRAM 30m telescope employing the correlation polarimeter XPOL…
Characterizing the polarized dust emission from our Galaxy will be decisive for the quest for the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) primordial $B$-modes. The incomplete modelling of its potentially complex spectral properties could lead to biases in the CMB polarization analyses and to a spurious detection of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$. It is crucial for future surveys like the $LiteBIRD$ satellite, which aims at constraining the primordial signal leftover by Inflation with an accuracy on $r$ of the order 1e-3. Variations of the dust properties along and between lines of sight lead to dist…
Secondary CMB polarization is induced by the late-time scattering of CMB photons by free electrons on our past light cone. This polarized Sunyaev Zel'dovich (pSZ) effect is sensitive to the electrons' locally observed CMB quadrupole, which is sourced primarily by long wavelength inhomogeneities. By combining the remote quadrupoles measured by free electrons throughout the Universe after reionization, the pSZ effect allows us to obtain additional information about large scale modes beyond what can be learned from our own last scattering surface. Here we determine the power of pSZ tomography, in…
We present for the first time a coherent model of the polarized Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emissions which are the main diffuse foreground for the measurement of the polarized power spectra of the CMB fluctuations with the Planck satellite mission. We produce 3D models of the Galactic magnetic field including regular and turbulent components, and of the distribution of matter in the Galaxy, relativistic electrons and dust grains. By integrating along the line of sight we construct maps of the polarized Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emission for each of these models and compa…
We analyze the Southern Sky emission in linear polarization at 2.3 GHz as observed by the S-band Polarization All Sky Survey S-PASS. Our purpose is to study the properties of the diffuse Galactic polarized synchrotron as a contaminant to CMB B-mode observations. We study the angular distribution of the S-PASS signal at intermediate and high Galactic latitudes by means of angular power spectra. Power spectra, show a decay of the spectral amplitude as a function of multipole for \ell<200, typical of the diffuse emission. Spectra can be approximated by a power law C_{\ell}\propto\ell^{alpha}, wit…
A persistent signal of power asymmetry on opposite hemispheres of CMB sky was seen in full-sky temperature measurements made so far. This asymmetry was seen in microwave sky from WMAP as well as PLANCK satellites, and calls for attention the larger question of \emph{statistical isotropy}, one of the foundational principles of modern cosmology. In this work we present an analysis of polarized CMB maps from PLANCK 2015 full mission data. We apply the local variance estimator on low resolution $E-$mode maps from PLANCK 2015 polarization \texttt{Commander} solution. We find a significant hemispher…
