Entanglement of two different quantum orders is of an interest of the modern condensed matter physics. One of the examples is the dynamical multiferroicity, where fluctuations of electric dipoles lead to magnetization. We investigate this effect at finite temperature and demonstrate an elevated magnetic response of a ferroelectric near the ferroelectric quantum critical point (FE QCP). We calculate the magnetic susceptibility of a bulk sample on the paraelectric side of the FE QCP at finite temperature and find enhanced magnetic susceptibility near the FE QCP. We propose quantum paraelectric strontium titanate (STO) as a candidate material to search for dynamic multiferroicity. We estimate the magnitude of the magnetic susceptibility for this material and find that it is detectable experimentally.
Precise specific heat of barium titanate single crystals of different quality has been measured with special attention to the temperature region above the ferroelectric phase transition. It is shown that excess specific heat of the multiaxial barium titanate in the paraelectric phase has a fluctuation nature and its temperature dependence is in accordance with the theoretical predictions of Levanyuk theory for multiaxial ferroelectrics. In this study the first observation of fluctuation contribution to the specific heat is presented.
Synchrotron x-ray scattering studies of anti-ferroelectric nanoregions (AFR) as fluctuations, which give rise to 1/2(hk0) superlattice reflections (alpha spots), were systematically performed in Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) ferroelectric relaxor. Separation of the alpha spots from underlying diffuse scattering background allowed studying them as separate entities for the first time. AFR fluctuations were shown to be different from the chemical nanodomains (CND) and ferroelectric polar nano-regions (PNR). Instead, they are formed by anti-parallel short-range correlated Pb^2+ displacements that lead t…
We propose the phenomenological description of ferroelectric disordering in ferroelectric-semiconductors caused by charged impurities with the charge density random fluctuations. The material improper conductivity is proportional to the averaged impurity charge density. For high enough conductivity free carriers screen fluctuations in the absence of an external field. When external electric field is applied, inner field fluctuations and dynamical induction fluctuations appear in the inhomogeneously polarized system "charged defect + screening cloud". We show that the macroscopic state of ferro…
Ferroelectric field-effect transistors (FE-FETs) consisting of tunable dielectric layers are utilized to investigate interfacial transport processes. Large changes in the dielectric constant as a function of temperature are observed in FE-FETs in conjunction with the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition. The devices offer a test bed to evaluate specific effects of polarization on the electrical processes. FE-FETs have dominant contributions from polarization-fluctuation rather than static dipolar disorder prevalent in high k paraelectric dielectric-based FETs. Additionally, photo-excitatio…
Using effective-field theory with correlations, we investigate the effects of interfacial pseudo-spin coupling fluctuations on the susceptibility and polarization of ferroelectric superlattices within the framework of transverse Ising model. It is found that the interfacial coupling fluctuations increase the susceptibility in the low temperature region. For a strong interfacial coupling, the phase transition temperature decreases with the strength of fluctuations of the interfacial coupling. The dependence of the susceptibility on the superlattice period of $BaTiO_{3}/SrTiO_{3}$ are plotted fo…
Polycrystals of CaxBa1-xNb2O6(CBN) tungsten bronze type oxides have been prepared and their structural, dielectric, and thermal properties have been investigated. It was found that CBN alloys with ferroelectric tetragonal tungsten bronze structure were only available in a composition range of 0.19 <= x <= 0.32. It was also showed that CBN can be classified as a ferroelectric with a first-order thermal phase transition showing polarization precursor dynamics before transition into the ferroelectric phase, in sharp contrast to an isostructural alloy SrxBa1-xNb2O6(SBN) that shows typical relaxor …
Using a Ginzburg--Landau--Devonshire model that includes the coupling of polarization to strain, we calculate the fluctuation spectra of ferroelectric domain walls. The influence of the strain coupling differs between 180 degree and 90 degree walls due to the different strain profiles of the two configurations. The finite speed of acoustic phonons, $v_s$, retards the response of the strain to polarization fluctuations, and the results depend on $v_s$. For $v_s \to \infty$, the strain mediates an instantaneous electrostrictive interaction, which is long-range in the 90 degree wall case. For fin…

We present a theoretical proposal for the design of a thermal switch based on the anisotropy of the thermal conductivity of PbTiO3 and of the possibility to rotate the ferroelectric polarization with an external electric field. Our calculations are based on an iterative solution of the phonon Boltzmann Transport Equation and rely on interatomic force constants computed within an efficient second-principles density functional theory scheme. We also characterize the hysteresis cycle of the thermal conductivity in presence of an applied electric field and show that the response time would be limi…
Ferroelectric domain walls are boundaries between regions with different polarization orientations in a ferroelectric material. Using first principles calculations, we characterize all different types of domain walls forming on ($11\bar{1}$), ($111$) and ($1\bar{1}0$) crystallographic planes in thermoelectric GeTe. We find large structural distortions in the vicinity of most of these domain walls, which are driven by polarization variations. We show that such strong strain-order parameter coupling will considerably reduce the lattice thermal conductivity of GeTe samples containing domain walls…
We analyze theoretically the finite-temperature polarization dynamic in displacive-type ferroelectrics. In particular we consider the thermally-activated switching time of a single-domain ferroelectric polarization studied by means of the Landau-Khalatnikov equation, extended as to capture thermal fluctuations. The results are compared with the switching time formula that follows from the analytical solution of Pauli master equations. In a second step we focus on the phase diagram of a prototypical ferroelectric as described by the temperature-dependent Landau-Devonshire model including therma…
We study Mn substitution for Ti in BaTiO3 with and without compensating oxygen vacancies using density functional theory (DFT) in combination with dynamical mean field theory (DMFT). We find strong charge and spin fluctuations. Without compensating oxygen vacancies, the ground state is found to be a quantum superposition of two distinct atomic valences, 3d4 and 3d5. Introducing a compensating oxygen vacancy at a neighboring site reduces both charge and spin fluctuations due to the reduction of electron hopping from Mn to its ligands. As a consequence, valence fluctuations are reduced, and is c…
The rare-earth chromates (RECrO$_3$) and manganites (REMnO$_3$) where, RE = Eu, Y, Dy, Ho, Gd are constantly under scrutiny in search of room temperature magnetoelectric multiferroics. However, the artefacts and undesirable signal in some of the measurements pose a severe challenge in confirming the ferroelectric (FE) phase, especially in reference to pyroelectric current measurement technique. In this regard, we propose a simple modified approach to pyroelectric current measurement named as 4-segment thermal cycling protocol. This protocol assists in isolating the elusive, irreversible therma…
The thermal conductivity of polycrystalline bulk PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) has been investigated according to electrical boundary conditions and poling. The thermal conductivity of poled PZT was measured in the poling direction for open circuit and short circuit conditions. The short circuit thermal conductivity had the largest thermal conductivity. The relationship between these two thermal properties, the electrothermal coupling factor $k_{33}^κ$, was found to be similar to the electromechanical coupling factor $k_{33}$ relating elastic compliance under short circuit and open circuit con…
Static and dynamic critical behavior of Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ type ferroelectrics and (Pb$_y$Sn$_{1-y}$)$_2$P$_2$(Se$_x$S$_{1-x}$)$_6$ mixed crystals with line of tricritical points and line of Lifshitz points on the $T-x-y$ phase diagram, which meet at the tricritical Lifshitz point, can be described in a combined BEG-ANNNI model. Such the model considers first and second neighbor interactions for pseudospins in a local three-well potential. Below the temperature of tricritical Lifshitz point, the "chaotic" state accompanied by the coexistence of ferroelectric, metastable paraelectric and modulate…
We have modified Landau-Khalatnikov approach and shown that the pyroelectric response of inhomogeneous ferroelectric-semiconductor films can be described by using six coupled equations for six order parameters: average displacement, its mean-square fluctuation and correlation with charge defects density fluctuations, average pyroelectric coefficient, its fluctuation and correlation with charge defects density fluctuations. Coupled equations demonstrate the inhomogeneous reversal of pyroelectric response in contrast to the equations of Landau-Khalatnikov type, which describe the homogeneous rev…
For Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ family of uniaxial ferroelectrics, the anharmonic quantum oscillators model, based on local three-well potential for spontaneous polarization fluctuations, has been used for a description of anharmonic properties, namely thermal expansion. The calculated pseudospin fluctuations spectra in ferroelectric phase demonstrate negative Grüneisen parameters for excitations that satisfy Curie-Weiss-like temperature and pressure dependencies in the vicinity of second order phase transition. Thermal expansion coefficient is calculated by evaluation of pseudospins entropy baric depend…
GeTe is a well-known ferroelectric and thermoelectric material that undergoes a structural phase transition from a rhombohedral to the rocksalt structure at $\sim 600-700$ K. We present a first principles approach to calculate the thermal expansion of GeTe in the rhombohedral phase up to the Curie temperature. We find the minimum of the Helmholtz free energy with respect to each structural parameter in a manner similar to the traditional Gr{ü}neisen theory, and account for the temperature dependence of elastic constants. We obtain the temperature variation of the structural parameters of rhomb…
We investigated microscopic lattice states in the donor-acceptor ionic Mott insulator, TTF-BA, by $^{79}$Br-NQR spectroscopy to explore cross-correlated fluctuations between spin, charge and lattice. A ferroelectric transition with lattice dimerization is captured by a NQR line splitting with the critical exponent $β$ of 0.40, as expected in the 3D Ising universality class, and a peak formation in the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ at the transition temperature, $T_\mathrm{c}$, of 53 K. Notably, $T_1^{-1}$ does not obey the conventional $T^2$ law expected for the Raman process of phon…
Towards Improved Polarization Uniformity in Ferroelectric Hf$_{0.5}$Zr$_{0.5}$O$_2$ Devices within Back End of Line Thermal Budget for Memory and Neuromorphic Applications
For Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ ferroelectrics, the appearance of spontaneous polarization is related to stereoactivity of tin cations and valence fluctuations of phosphorous cations. Here, the continuous phase transition and its behavior under pressure is determined by thee-well local potential and can be described in an anharmonic quantum oscillator model. For such a model, the spectrum of pseudospin fluctuations at different temperatures and pressures has been calculated and compared with the data of Raman spectroscopy. It was revealed that the ferroelectric lattice instability is related to several l…
The low thermal conductivity of piezoelectric perovskites is a challenge for high power transducer applications. We report first principles calculations of the thermal conductivity of ferroelectric PbTiO$_3$ and the cubic nearly ferroelectric perovskite KTaO$_3$. The calculated thermal conductivity of PbTiO$_3$ is much lower than that of KTaO$_3$ in accord with experiment. Analysis of the results shows that the reason for the low thermal conductivity of PbTiO$_3$ is the presence of low frequency optical phonons associated with the polar modes. These are less dispersive in PbTiO$_3$, leading to…
The valence fluctuations which are related to the charge disproportionation of phosphorous ions $P^{4+} + P^{4+}\rightarrow P^{3+} + P^{5+}$ are the origin of ferroelectric and quantum paraelectric states in Sn(Pb)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ semiconductors. They involve recharging of SnPS$_3$ or PbPS$_3$ structural groups which could be represented as half-filled sites in the crystal lattice. Temperature-pressure phase diagram for Sn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ compound and temperature-composition phase diagram for (Pb$_y$Sn$_{1-y}$)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ mixed crystals, which include tricritical points and where a temperature …
SrTiO$_3$ is an incipient ferroelectric on the verge of a polar instability, which is avoided at low temperatures by quantum fluctuations. Within this unusual quantum paraelectric phase, superconductivity persists despite extremely dilute carrier densities. Ferroelectric fluctuations have been suspected to play a role in the origin of superconductivity by contributing to electron pairing. To investigate this possibility, we used optical second harmonic generation to measure the doping and temperature dependence of the ferroelectric order parameter in compressively strained SrTiO$_3$ thin films…
Perovskite solid solutions PbHfO3-PbSnO3 offer valuable opportunities for studying the formation mechsnisms of incommensurate phases, owing to the presence of an intermediate (between cubic and incommensurate) phase, which is stabilized in PbHfO3 upon PbSnO3 admixture. Here, x-ray diffuse scattering signal is used to quantify the evolution of susceptibilities related to different modes of distortion (ferroelectric, incommensurate, antiferrodistortive) as a function of temperature and the results are critically compared to the predictions of a minimal symmetry-based Landau-like model with two c…
The ease with which domain walls (DWs) in ferroelectric materials can be written and erased provides a versatile way to dynamically modulate heat fluxes. In this work we evaluate the thermal boundary resistance (TBR) of 180$^{\circ}$ DWs in prototype ferroelectric perovskite PbTiO$_3$ within the numerical formalisms of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics and nonequilibrium Green's functions. An excellent agreement is obtained for the TBR of an isolated DW derived from both approaches, which reveals the harmonic character of the phonon-DW scattering mechanism. The thermal resistance of the ferroe…
Quantum matter hosts a large variety of phases, some coexisting, some competing; when two or more orders occur together, they are often entangled and cannot be separated. Dynamical multiferroicity, where fluctuations of electric dipoles lead to magnetisation, is an example where the two orders are impossible to disentangle. Here we demonstrate elevated magnetic response of a ferroelectric near the ferroelectric quantum critical point (FE QCP) since magnetic fluctuations are entangled with ferroelectric fluctuations. We thus suggest that any ferroelectric quantum critical point is an \textit{in…
We present a novel analytical formulation on generation of electro-acoustic noise in ferroelectric materials where the thermal fluctuations induced polarization and acoustic modes distinctly contribute to noise. The conservative force fields associated with ferroelectric materials drive feedback of the spectral modes in the system. It results in symmetry breaking of the frequency spectrum of broadband noise leading to enhancement of specific modes which generate high amplitude narrowband noise. We describe the process under the theoretical framework of fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the co…
Investigating the competition between ferroelectric ordering and quantum fluctuations is essential to tailor the desired functionalities of mixed ferroelectric and incipient ferroelectric systems, like, (Ba,Sr)TiO3 and (Eu,Ba)TiO3. Recently, it has been shown that suppression of quantum fluctuations increases ferroelectric ordering in (Eu,Ba)TiO3 and since these phenomena are coupled to crystallographic phase transitions it is essential to understand the role of phonons. Here, we observe that the unusual temperature dependence of phonons in BaTiO3 gets suppressed when Ba2+ is replaced by Eu2+.…
We present a detailed analysis of the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of a ferroelectric PbTiO3 thin film deposited in a composition-spread geometry enabling a continuous range of compositions from ~25% titanium-deficient to ~20% titanium-rich to be studied. By fitting the experimental results to the Debye model we deconvolve and quantify the two main phonon scattering sources in the system: ferroelectric domain walls (DWs) and point defects. Our results prove that ferroelectric DWs are the main agent limiting the thermal conductivity in this system, not only in the stoichio…
The proximity to structural phase transitions in IV-VI thermoelectric materials is one of the main reasons for their large phonon anharmonicity and intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity $κ$. However, the $κ$ of GeTe increases at the ferroelectric phase transition near $700$ K. Using first-principles calculations with the temperature dependent effective potential method, we show that this rise in $κ$ is the consequence of negative thermal expansion in the rhombohedral phase and increase in the phonon lifetimes in the high-symmetry phase. Negative thermal expansion increases phonon grou…
A single crystal of lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT), composition Pb(Zr0.80Ti0.20)O3, was studied by polarized-Raman scattering as a function of temperature. Raman spectra reveal that the local structure deviates from the average structure in both ferroelectric and paraelectric phases. We show that the crystal possesses several, inequivalent complex domain boundaries which show no sign of instability even 200 K above the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition temperature TC. Two types of boundaries are addressed. The first boundary was formed between ferroelectric domains below TC. This b…
Thermomechanical cycles with a ferroelectric working substance convert heat to electrical energy. As shown here, magnetoelectrically coupled ferroelectric/ferromangtic composites (also called multiferroics) add new functionalities and allow for an efficient thermal energy harvesting at room temperature by exploiting the pyroelectric effect. By virtue of the magnetoelectric coupling, external electric and magnetic fields can steer the operation of these heat engines. Our theoretical predictions are based on a combination of Landau-Khalatnikov-Tani approach (with a Ginzburg-Landau-Devonshire pot…
The coupling of polarization and oxygen vacancy migration in ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 thin films enables electrically controlled thermal memories above room temperature
We develop a theory to study the characteristics of dipolar / strain fluctuations in perovskite relaxors. In addition to the soft TO and TA phonons, we take into account another freedom of motion associated with the random hopping of $\mathrm{Pb^{2+}}$ ions between the off-center sites around the high symmetry corner site, thus constructing a coupled TO-TA-pseudospin model to describe the perovskite relaxors. It is shown that there is a possibility that prior to the on-set of instability of the uniform TO-mode (soft-mode), instability of TA mode with nanometer scale modulation $(\mathbf{q}\sim…
Using piezoresponse force microscopy on epitaxial ferroelectric thin films, we have measured the evolution of domain wall roughening as a result of heat-quench cycles up to 735C, with the effective roughness exponent ζ changing from 0.25 to 0.5. We discuss two possible mechanisms for the observed ζ increase: a quench from a thermal 1-dimensional configuration, and from a locally-equilibrated pinned configuration with a crossover from a 2- to 1-dimensional regime. We find that the post-quench spatial structure of the metastable states, qualitatively consistent with the existence of a growing dy…
The improper ferroelectricity in YMnO$_3$ and other related multiferroic hexagonal manganites are known to cause topologically protected ferroelectric domains that give rise to rich and diverse physical phenomena. The local structure and structural coherence across the ferroelectric transition, however, were previously not well understood. Here we reveal the evolution of the local structure with temperature in YMnO$_3$ using neutron total scattering techniques, and interpret them with the help of first-principles calculations. The results show that, at room temperature, the local and average s…
We report phonon renormalization induced by an external electric field E in ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] nanofibers through measuring the E-dependent thermal conductivity. Our experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical ones derived from the lattice dynamics. The renormalization is attributed to the anharmonicity that modifies the phonon spectrum when the atoms are pulled away from their equilibrium positions by the electric field. Our finding provides an efficient way to manipulate the thermal conductivity by tuning external …
Effect of thermal annealing on dielectric and ferroelectric properties of aerosol-deposited $0.65\text{Pb}(\text{Mg}_{1/3}\text{Nb}_{2/3})\text{O}_{3}-0.35\text{PbTiO}_{3}$ thick films
The effect of ferroelectric fluctuations on the temperature dependent dielectric constant of SrTiO$_3\,$(STO) has been long studied. Those fluctuations have been shown in recent years to be quantum critical and STO demonstrated to form the archetypal quantum critical paraelectric. The effect of those same fluctuations on the pressure and temperature dependence of the ferroelectric soft phonon mode as the system is tuned away from criticality are reported for the first time in this paper. We show that the mean field approximation is confirmed experimentally. Furthermore, using a self-consistent…
Ferroelectric domain wall motion is fundamental to the switching properties of ferroelectric devices and is influenced by a wide range of factors including spatial disorder within the material and thermal noise. We build a Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) model of 180${}^{\circ}$ ferroelectric domain wall motion that explicitly takes into account the presence of both spatial and temporal disorder. We demonstrate both creep flow and linear flow regimes of the domain wall dynamics by solving the LGD equations in a Galilean frame moving with the wall velocity $v$. Thermal noise plays a key role i…
We examine theoretically a possibility of ferroelectricity caused by electronic charge order without inversion symmetry, motivated by layered iron oxides. Quantum electronic models in a paired-triangular lattice are analyzed by utilizing the variational Monte Carlo simulation. Our calculation demonstrates that combined effects of electron transfer between the layers, corresponding to quantum fluctuation between the potential minima, and geometrical frustration promote appearance of an electric polarization. Present results are in contrast to the conventional manner of quantum fluctuation in fe…
A parameterized effective Hamiltonian approach is used to investigate KTaO$_3$. We find that the experimentally observed anomalous dielectric response of this incipient ferroelectric is well reproduced by this approach, once quantum effects are accounted for. Quantum fluctuations suppress the paraelectric--to--ferroelectric phase transition; it is unnecessary to introduce defects to explain the dielectric behavior. The resulting quantum-induced local structure exhibits off-center atomic displacements that display {\sl longitudinal, needle-like correlations} extending a few lattice constants.
Fluctuating orders in solids are generally considered high-temperature precursors of broken symmetry phases. However, in some cases these fluctuations persist to zero temperature and prevent the emergence of long-range order, as for example observed in quantum spin and dipolar liquids. $SrTiO_3$ is a quantum paraelectric in which dipolar fluctuations grow when the material is cooled, although a long-range ferroelectric order never sets in. We show that the nonlinear excitation of lattice vibrations with mid-infrared optical pulses can induce polar order in $SrTiO_3$ up to temperatures in exces…
In the context of recent experimental observations of an unexpectedly large thermal Hall conductivity, $κ_H$, in insulating $\mathrm{La_2CuO_4}$ (LCO) and $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ (STO), we theoretically explore conditions under which acoustic phonons can give rise to such a large $κ_H$. Both the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to $κ_H$ are large in proportion to the dielectric constant, $ε$, and the flexoelectric coupling, $F$. While the intrinsic contribution is still orders of magnitude smaller than the observed effect, an extrinsic contribution proportional to the phonon mean free path app…
