We investigated microscopic lattice states in the donor-acceptor ionic Mott insulator, TTF-BA, by $^{79}$Br-NQR spectroscopy to explore cross-correlated fluctuations between spin, charge and lattice. A ferroelectric transition with lattice dimerization is captured by a NQR line splitting with the critical exponent $β$ of 0.40, as expected in the 3D Ising universality class, and a peak formation in the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ at the transition temperature, $T_\mathrm{c}$, of 53 K. Notably, $T_1^{-1}$ does not obey the conventional $T^2$ law expected for the Raman process of phonons even far above $T_\mathrm{c}$, indicating the emergence of extraordinary lattice fluctuations. They are very probably associated with polar fluctuations in the paraelectric and paramagnetic phase of TTF-BA and explain the previous observation of the anomalously suppressed paramagnetic spin susceptibility, which was conjectured to be due to the local spin-singlet pairing prior to the nonmagnetic ferroelectric order [K. Sunami $et$ $al$., Phys. Rev. Res. 2, 043333 (2020)].
The multiferroic RMn2O5 family, where R is rare-earth ion or Y, exhibits rich physics of multiferroicity which has not yet well understood, noting that multiferroicity is receiving attentions for promising application potentials. DyMn2O5 is a representative member of this family. The ferroelectric polarization in DyMn2O5 is claimed to have two anti-parallel components: one (PDM) from the symmetric exchange striction between the Dy3+-Mn4+ interactions and the other (PMM) from the symmetric exchange striction between the Mn3+-Mn4+ interactions. We investigate the evolutions of the two components…
Cross-correlation between magnetism and dielectric is expected to offer novel emergent phenomena. Here, magnetic excitations in the organic donor-acceptor spin-chain system, TTF-BA, with a ferroelectric ground state is investigated by $^1$H-NMR spectroscopy. A nonmagnetic transition with a ferroelectric order is marked by sharp drops in NMR shift and nuclear spin relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ at 53 K. Remarkably, the analyses of the NMR shift and $T_1^{-1}$ dictate that the paramagnetic spin susceptibility in TTF-BA is substantially suppressed from that expected for the 1D Heisenberg spins. We pr…
To elucidate a novel pressure-temperature phase diagram of the quasi-one-dimensional mixed-stack charge-transfer (CT) complex TTF-CA, we study the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 Blume-Emery-Griffith (BEG) model. In addition to the local charge transfer energy and the inter-stack polar (dipole-dipole) interaction, we take account of the inter-stack electrostriction effect. Using the self-consistent chain-mean-field theory, where the intra-stack degrees of freedom are exactly treated by the transfer-matrix method, we reproduce the gas-liquid-solid like phase diagram corresponding to the neutral (N…
Nonequilibrium dynamics are studied near the quantum phase transition point in the one-dimensional quantum Blume-Emery-Griffiths model. Its pseudo-spin component $ S^z $ represents an electric polarization, and $ (S^z)^2 $ corresponds to ionicity, in mixed-stack charge-transfer complexes that exhibit a transition between neutral quantum-paraelectric and ionic ferroelectric (or antiferroelectric) phases. The time-dependent Schrödinger equation is solved for the exact many-body wave function in the quantum paraelectric phase. After impact force is introduced on a polarization locally in space an…
Magneto-electric multiferroics exemplified by TbMnO3 possess both magnetic and ferroelectric long-range order. The magnetic order is mostly understood, whereas the nature of the ferroelectricity has remained more elusive. Competing models proposed to explain the ferroelectricity are associated respectively with charge transfer and ionic displacements. Exploiting the magneto-electric coupling, we use an electric field to produce a single magnetic domain state, and a magnetic field to induce ionic displacements. Under these conditions, interference charge-magnetic X-ray scattering arises, encodi…
The neutral-to-ionic phase transition in the mixed-stack charge-transfer complex tetrathiafulvalene-p-chloranil (TTF-CA) has been studied by pressure-dependent infrared spectroscopy up to p=11 kbar and down to low temperatures, T = 10 K. By tracking the C=O antisymmetric stretching mode of CA molecules, we accurately determine the ionicity of TTF-CA in the pressure-temperature phase diagram. At any point the TTF-CA crystal bears only a single ionicity; there is no coexistence region or an exotic high-pressure phase. Our findings shed new light on the role of electron-phonon interaction in the …
In strongly correlated organic materials it has been pointed out that charge-ordering could also achieve electronic ferroelectricity at the same critical temperature $T_{co}$. A prototype of such phenomenon are the quasi-one dimensional (TMTTF)$_2X$ Fabre-salts. However, the stabilization of a long-range ferroelectric ground-state below $T_{co}$ requires the break of inversion symmetry, which should be accompanied by a lattice deformation. In this work we investigate the role of the monovalent counter-anion $X$ in such mechanism. For this purpose, we measured the quasi-static dielectric consta…
We report a detailed spectroscopic study of the pressure induced neutral-ionic phase transition (NIT) of the mixed-stack charge-transfer (CT) crystal tetrathiafulvalene-chloranil (TTF-CA). We show that the pressure induced phase transition is still first-order and involves the presence of an intermediate disordered phase, defined by the coexistence of two species of different ionicity. Further application of pressure gradually converts this phase into an homogeneous ferroelectric phase with a single ionicity. In addition, we detect strong pretransitional phenomena which anticipate the intermed…
We show that electronic correlations decimate the intrinsic ferroelectric polarization of the recently discovered class of multiferroic manganites RMn$_2$O$_5$, where R is a rare earth element. Such is manifest from {\it ab initio} bandstructure computations that account for the strong local Coulomb interactions between the manganese 3d electrons --the root of magnetism in these materials. When including these the computed electronic, magnetic and lattice structure of multiferroic HoMn$_2$O$_5$ results in an amplitude and direction of polarization that is in accordance with experiment. The mic…
We investigate the ground state phase diagram of the half-filled $t-t^{\prime}$ repulsive Hubbard model in the presence of a staggered ionic potential $Δ$, using the continuum-limit bosonization approach. We find, that with increasing on-site-repulsion $U$, depending on the value of the next-nearest-hopping amplitude $t^{\prime}$, the model shows three different versions of the ground state phase diagram. For $t^{\prime} < t^{\prime}_{\ast}$, the ground state phase diagram consists of the following three insulating phases: Band-Insulator at $U<U_{c}$, Ferroelectric Insulator at $U_{c} < U < U_…
We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$ has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-$1/2$ chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a novel class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirali…
We derive an effective Hamiltonian for the ionic Hubbard model at half filling, extended to include nearest-neighbor repulsion. Using a spin-particle transformation, the effective model is mapped onto simple spin-1 models in two particular cases. Using another spin-particle transformation, a slightly modified model is mapped into an SU(3) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model whose exact ground state is known to be spontaneously dimerized. From the effective models several properties of the dimerized phase are discussed, like ferroelectricity and fractional charge excitations. Using bosonization …
The effects of substituting nonmagnetic Mg2+ and Zn2+ ions for the Mn2+ (S = 5/2) ions on the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of the multiferroic frustrated antiferromagnet MnWO4 were investigated. Polycrystalline samples of Mn1-xMgxWO4 and Mn1-xZnxWO4 (0<x<0.3) solid solutions were prepared by a solid-state route and characterized via X-ray and neutron diffraction, magnetization, and dielectric permittivity measurements. Mg and Zn substitutions give rise to very similar effects. The Neel temperature TN, the AF3-to-AF2 magnetic phase transition temperature T2, and the critical f…
We discuss relative roles played by the magnetic inversion symmetry breaking and the ferroelectric (FE) atomic displacements in the multiferroic state of YMnO3. For these purposes we derive a realistic low-energy model, using results of first-principles calculations and experimental parameters of the crystal structure. Then, we solve this model in the Hartree-Fock approximation. We argue that the multiferroic state in YMnO3 has a magnetic origin, and the centrosymmetric Pbnm structure is formally sufficient for explaining details of the noncentrosymmetric magnetic ground state. The relativisti…
We present exact diagonalization results on a modified Peierls-Hubbard model for the neutral-ionic phase transition. The ground state potential energy surface and the infrared intensity of the Peierls mode point to a strong, non-linear electron-phonon coupling, with effects that are dominated by the proximity to the electronic instability rather than by electronic correlations. The huge infrared intensity of the Peierls mode at the ferroelectric transition is related to the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant of mixed-stack organic crystals.
We have performed simultaneous measurements of magnetic chirality by using polarized neutrons and electric polarization along the b-axis of single crystals of YMn$^{4+}$(Mn$_{1-x}$Ga$_{x}$)$^{3+}$O$_{5}$ with $x=0.047$ and 0.12, in which nonmagnetic Ga-ions dilute Mn$^{3+}$ spins. The $x=0.047$ sample exhibits high-temperature incommensurate (HT-ICM), commensurate (CM), and low-temperature incommensurate (LT-ICM) magnetic phases in order of decreasing temperature, whereas the $x=0.12$ sample exhibits only HT-ICM and LT-ICM phases. Here, the CM and LT-ICM phases are ferroelectric and weak-ferro…
In this work we investigate the magnetic field dependence of Ag octahedra rotation (tilt) and B2g symmetric stretching modes frequency at different temperatures. Our field-dependent Raman investigation at 10K is interpreted by an ionic displacive nature of the magnetically induced ferroelectric phase transition. The frequency change of the Ag tilt is in agreement with the stabilization of the Mn-Gd spin arrangement, yielding the necessary conditions for the onset of ferroelectricity on the basis of the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The role of the Jahn-Teller cooperative interacti…
Phase competition and excitations in the one-dimensional neutral-ionic transition systems are theoretically studied comprehensively. From the semiclassical treatment of the bosonized Hamiltonian, we examine the competition among the neutral (N), ferroelectric-ionic (I$_\mathrm{ferro}$) and paraelectric-ionic (I$_\mathrm{para}$) states. The phase transitions between them can become first-order when the fluctuation-induced higher-order commensurability potential is considered. In particular, the description of the first-order phase boundary between N and I$_\mathrm{ferro}$ enables us to analyze …
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the Hubbard model for the AB$_{N-1}$ chain with filling 1/N, where $N$ is the number of atoms per unit cell. In the strong-coupling limit, a charge transition takes place from a band insulator (BI) to a correlated insulator (CI) for increasing on-site repulsion $U$ and positive on-site energy difference $Δ$ (energy at A sites lower than at B sites). In the weak-coupling limit, a bosonization analysis suggests that for $N > 2$ the physics is qualitatively similar to the case $N = 2$ which has already been studied: an intermediate phase emerges, w…
