We show that electronic correlations decimate the intrinsic ferroelectric polarization of the recently discovered class of multiferroic manganites RMn$_2$O$_5$, where R is a rare earth element. Such is manifest from {\it ab initio} bandstructure computations that account for the strong local Coulomb interactions between the manganese 3d electrons --the root of magnetism in these materials. When including these the computed electronic, magnetic and lattice structure of multiferroic HoMn$_2$O$_5$ results in an amplitude and direction of polarization that is in accordance with experiment. The microscopic mechanism behind the decimation is a near cancellation of the ionic polarization induced by ferroelectric lattice displacements and the electronic one caused by valence charge redistributions.
We present a unique example of giant magnetoelectric effect in a conventional multiferroic HoMnO3, where polarization is very large (~56 mC/m2) and the ferroelectric transition temperature is higher than the magnetic ordering temperature by an order. We attribute the uniqueness of the giant magnetoelectric effect to the ferroelectricity induced entirely by the off-center displacement of rare earth ions with large magnetic moments. This finding suggests a new avenue to design multiferroics with large polarization and higher ferroelectric transition temperature as well as large magnetoelectric e…
We report the dielectric dispersion of the giant magnetocapacitance (GMC) in multiferroic DyMnO$_{3}$ over a wide frequency range. The GMC is found to be attributable not to the softened electromagnon but to the electric-field-driven motion of multiferroic domain wall (DW). In contrast to conventional ferroelectric DWs, the present multiferroic DW motion holds extremely high relaxation rate of $\sim$$10^{7}$ s$^{-1}$ even at low temperatures. This mobile nature as well as the model simulation suggests that the multiferroic DW is not atomically thin as in ferroelectrics but thick, reflecting it…
We present a first principles study of the series of multiferroic barium fluorides with the composition BaMF4, where M is Mn, Fe, Co, or Ni. We discuss trends in the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties, and we show that the ferroelectricity in these systems results from the "freezing in" of a single unstable polar phonon mode. In contrast to the case of the standard perovskite ferroelectrics, this structural distortion is not accompanied by charge transfer between cations and anions. Thus, the ferroelectric instability in the multiferroic barium fluorides arises solely due to size …
Using first principles calculations, we study the microscopic origin of ferroelectricity (FE) induced by magnetic order in the orthorhombic HoMnO3. We obtain the largest ferroelectric polarization observed in the whole class of improper magnetic ferroelectrics to date. We find that the two proposed mechanisms for FE in multiferroics, lattice- and electronic-based, are simultaneously active in this compound: a large portion of the ferroelectric polarization arises due to quantum-mechanical effects of electron orbital polarization, in addition to the conventional polar atomic displacements. An i…
We studied magnetic excitations in a low-temperature ferroelectric phase of the multiferroic YMn2O5 using inelastic neutron scattering (INS). We identify low-energy magnon modes and establish a correspondence between the magnon peaks observed by INS and electromagnon peaks observed in optical absorption [1]. Furthermore, we explain the microscopic mechanism, which results in the lowest-energy electromagnon peak, by comparing the inelastic neutron spectral weight with the polarization in the commensurate ferroelectric phase.
We report the remarkably robust ferroelectric state in the multiferroic compound Mn$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$WO$_4$. The substitution of the magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ with nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$ reduces the magnetic exchange and provides control of the various magnetic and multiferroic states of MnWO$_4$. Only 5 % of Zn substitution results in a complete suppression of the frustrated collinear (paraelectric) low temperature phase. The helical magnetic and ferroelectric phase develops as the ground state. The multiferroic state is stable up to a high level of substitution of more than 50 %. The magnetic, thermodyn…
Multiferroic BiFeO3 epitaxial films with thickness ranging from 40 nm to 960 nm were grown by pulsed laser deposition on SrTiO3 (001) substrates with SrRuO3 bottom electrodes. X-ray characterization shows that the structure evolves from angularly-distorted tetragonal with c/a ~ 1.04 to more bulk-like distorted rhombohedral (c/a ~ 1.01) as the strain relaxes with increasing thickness. Despite this significant structural evolution, the ferroelectric polarization along the body diagonal of the distorted pseudo-cubic unit cells, as calculated from measurements along the normal direction, barely ch…
Neutron diffraction measurements on multiferroic LuFe2O4 show changes in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure characterized by wavevector q = (1/3 1/3 1/2) as a function of electric field cooling procedures. The increase of intensity from all magnetic domains and the decrease in the 2D magnetic order observed below the Neel temperature are indicative of increased ferroelectric charge order. The AFM order changes the dynamics of the CO state, and stabilizes it. It is determined that the increase in electric polarization observed at the magnetic ordering temperature is due to a transition from …
Multiferroic rare earth manganites attracted recent attention because of the coexistence of different types of magnetic and ferroelectric orders resulting in complex phase diagrams and a wealth of physical phenomena. The coupling and mutual interference of the different orders and the large magnetoelectric effect observed in several compounds are of fundamental interest and bear the potential for future applications in which the dielectric (magnetic) properties can be modified by the onset of a magnetic (dielectric) transition or the application of a magnetic (electric) field. The physical mec…
We present a study based on several advanced First-Principles methods, of the recently synthesized PbNiO3 [J. Am. Chem. Soc 133, 16920 (2011)], a rhombohedral antiferromagnetic insulator which crystallizes in the highly distorted R3c crystal structure. We find this compound electrically polarized, with a very large electric polarization of about 100 (\muC/cm)^2, thus even exceeding the polarization of well-known BiFeO3. PbNiO3 is a proper ferroelectric, with polarization driven by large Pb-O polar displacements along the [111] direction. Contrarily to naive expectations, a definite ionic charg…
A simple but general microscopic mechanism to understand the interplay between the electric and magnetic degrees of freedom is developed. Within this mechanism, the magnetic structure generates an electric current which induce an counterbalance electric current from the spin orbital coupling. When the magnetic structure is described by a single order parameter, the electric polarization is determined by the single spin orbital coupling parameter, and the material is predicted to be a half insulator. This mechanism provides a simple estimation of the value of ferroelectricity and sets a physica…
We report that CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ is a new magnetic multiferroic material. The appearance of a ferroelectric polarization coinciding with the magnetic phase transition ($\sim90$ K) suggests the presence of ferroelectricity induced by magnetism, further confirmed by its strong magnetoelectric response. With respect to other known magnetic multiferroics, CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ displays attractive multiferroic properties, such as a high ferroelectric critical temperature and large polarization. More importantly, these results open a new avenue to search for magnetic multiferroics in the catalogue of dope…
Multiferroics with coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism have been pursued for decades. However, their magnetoelectric performances remain limited due to the common trade-off between ferroelectricity and magnetism. Here, a family of nitride perovskites is proposed as multiferroics with prominent physical properties and nontrivial mechanisms. Taking GdWN$_3$ as a prototype, our first-principles calculations found that its perovskite phases own large polarizations (e.g. $111.3$ $μ$C/cm$^2$ for the $R3c$ phase) and a magnetic moment $7$ $μ_{\rm B}$/Gd$^{3+}$. More interestingly, its fer…
Superlattices composed of ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 and ferroelectric Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 layers were fabricated on (100) SrTiO3 substrates by a pulsed-laser deposition method. The capacitance and resistive parts of the samples were analyzed from the complex impedance measurements, performed on the samples using a special experimental set-up. The superlattice with larger ferroelectric thickness shows unique characteristics which are not present in the parent ferromagnetic thin film. The superlattice show both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric transitions which is an evidence for the coexistence …
A series of superlattices composed of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ (LCMO) and ferroelectric/paraelectric Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_3$ (0$\leq $x$\leq $1) were deposited on SrTiO$_3$ substrates using the pulsed laser deposition. Films of epitaxial nature comprised of spherical mounds having uniform size are obtained. Magnetotransport properties of the films reveal a ferromagnetic Curie temperature in the range of 145-158 K and negative magnetoresistance as high as 30%, depending on the type of ferroelectric layers employed for their growth (\QTR{it}{i.e.} '\QTR{it}{x'} value). Ferroelec…
Large electron-electron Coulomb-interactions in correlated systems can lead to a periodic arrangement of localized electrons, the so called "charge-order". The latter is here proposed as a driving force behind ferroelectricity in iron fluoride K0.6FeF3. By means of density functional theory, we propose different non-centrosymmetric d5/d6 charge-ordering patterns, each giving rise to polarization along different crystallographic axes and with different magnitudes. Accordingly, we introduce the concept of "ferroelectric anistropy" (peculiar to improper ferroelectrics with polarization induced by…
We report the discovery of a complete suppression of ferroelectricity in $MnWO_4$ by 10 % iron substitution and its restoration in external magnetic fields. The spontaneous polarization in $Mn_{0.9}Fe_{0.1}WO_4$ arises below 12 K in external fields above 4 T. The magnetic/ferroelectric phase diagram is constructed from the anomalies of the dielectric constant, polarization, magnetization, and heat capacity. The observations are qualitatively described by a mean field model with competing interactions and strong anisotropy. We propose that the magnetic field induces a non-collinear inversion sy…
We investigate the electronic structure and the ferroelectric properties of the recently discovered multiferroic ScFeO$_3$ by means of ab-initio calculations. The $3d$ manifold of Fe in the half-filled configuration naturally favors an antiferromagnetic ordering, with a theoretical estimate of the antiferromagnetic Néel temperature in good agreement with the experimental values. We find that the inversion symmetry-breaking is driven by the off-centering of Sc atoms, which results in a large ferroelectric polarization of $\sim$105\,$μ$C/cm$^{2}$. Surprisingly the ferroelectric polarization is s…
LiCu2O2 is the first multiferroic cuprate to be reported and its ferroelectricity is induced by complex magnetic ordering in ground state, which is still in controversy today. Herein, we have grown nearly untwinned LiCu2O2 single crystals of high quality and systematically investigated their dielectric and ferroelectric behaviours in external magnetic fields. The highly anisotropic response observed in different magnetic fields apparently contradicts the prevalent bc- or ab- plane cycloidal spin model. Our observations give strong evidence supporting a new helimagnetic picture in which the nor…
Artificial superlattices of (BiFeO3)m(SrTiO3)m (m= 1 to 10 unit cells) consisting of multiferroic BiFeO3 and insulating SrTiO3 layers were fabricated on (100)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. The remnant polarization and leakage current behavior were studied varying the periodicity (8-80A) of the superlattice. The leakage current was reduced by few orders of magnitude on increase of periodicity compared to single layer BiFeO3 thin films. Reduced leakage and intrinsic polarization hysteresis was observed and was confirmed by PUND analysis for periodicities in the range 20-60…
A series of superlattices and trilayers composed of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric or paraelectric layers were grown on (100) SrTiO3 by the pulsed laser deposition technique. Their structural and magneto-electric properties were examined. The superlattices made of ferromagnetic Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3 (PCMO) and a ferroelectric, namely Ba0.6Sr0.4TiO3 (BST) or BaTiO3, showed enhanced magnetoresistance (MR) at high applied magnetic field, whereas such enhancement was absent in Pr0.85Ca0.15MnO3/SrTiO3 superlattices, which clearly demonstrates the preponderant role of the ferroelectric layers in this en…
We report $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ to be an improper multiferroic with the simultaneous development of electric polarization and magnetization below $T_C$ = 35 K. The observed spontaneous polarization of magnitude 0.55 $μ$Ccm$^{-2}$ is highest among the copper based improper multiferroic materials. Our study demonstrates sizable amount of magneto-electric coupling below $T_C$ even with a low magnetic field. The theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) indicate magnetism in $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ is a consequence of {\em ferro-orbital} ordering driven by polar lattice distort…
We report on low-energy electron microscopy imaging of ferroelectric domains with submicron resolution. Periodic strips of 'up' and 'down'-polarized ferroelectric domains in bismuth ferrite -a room temperature multiferroic- serve as a model system to compare low-energy electron microscopy with the established piezoresponse force microscopy. The results confirm the possibility of full-field imaging of ferroelectric domains with short acquisition times by exploiting the sensitivity of ultraslow electrons to small variations of the electric potential near surfaces in the "mirror" operation mode.
We present a first-principles density functional study of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the ferroelectric domain walls in multiferroic BiFeO3. We find that domain walls in which the rotations of the oxygen octahedra do not change their phase when the polarization reorients are the most favorable, and of these the 109 degree domain wall centered around the BiO plane has the lowest energy. The 109 degree and 180 degree walls have a significant change in the component of their polarization perpendicular to the wall; the corresponding step in the electrostatic potential is …
We deduce the intrinsic conductivity properties of the ferroelectric domain walls around the topologically protected domain vortex cores in multiferroic YMnO3. This is achieved by performing a careful equivalent-circuit analysis of dielectric spectra measured in single-crystalline samples with different vortex densities. The conductivity contrast between the bulk domains and the less conducting domain boundaries is revealed to reach up to a factor 500 at room temperature, depending on sample preparation. Tunneling of localized defect charge carriers is the dominant charge-transport process in …
The multiferroic RMn2O5 family, where R is rare-earth ion or Y, exhibits rich physics of multiferroicity which has not yet well understood, noting that multiferroicity is receiving attentions for promising application potentials. DyMn2O5 is a representative member of this family. The ferroelectric polarization in DyMn2O5 is claimed to have two anti-parallel components: one (PDM) from the symmetric exchange striction between the Dy3+-Mn4+ interactions and the other (PMM) from the symmetric exchange striction between the Mn3+-Mn4+ interactions. We investigate the evolutions of the two components…
In this contribution to the special issue on magnetoelectrics and their applications, we focus on some single phase multiferroics theoretically predicted and/or experimentally discovered by the authors in recent years. In these materials, iron is the common core element. However, these materials are conceptually different from the mostly-studied BiFeO$_3$, since their ferroelectricity is improper. Our reviewed materials are not simply repeating one magnetoelectric mechanism, but cover multiple branches of improper ferroelectricity, including the magnetism-driven ferroelectrics, geometric ferro…
In this work multiferroic thin films of Bi containing perovskite oxides are discussed, where the driving force for ferroelectricity are the Bi3+ lone-pair electrons. First, a brief introduction of Bi containing multiferroic perovskite oxides will be presented to describe the mechanisms for establishing magnetic and ferroelectric order in these compounds and some recent developments in this field of research are reported. The second section addresses experimental aspects of epitaxial thin film growth of BiMnO3, (Bi0.9La0.1)2NiMnO6 (BLNMO) and BiFeO3 thin films by pulsed laser deposition. The th…
Multiferroics with the coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders are ideal candidates for magnetoelectric applications. Unfortunately, only very few ferroelectric-ferromagnetic multiferroics (with low magnetic critical temperature) were discovered. Here we perform first principles calculations to investigate the effects of the epitaxial strain on the properties of BiMnO3 films grown along the pseudocubic [001] direction. Unlike the ground state with the centrosymmetric C2/c space group in bulk, we reveal that the tensile epitaxial strain stabilizes the ferromagnetic and ferroelectr…
Multiferroics, defined for those multifunctional materials in which two or more kinds of fundamental ferroicities coexist, have become one of the hottest topics of condensed matter physics and materials science in recent years. The coexistence of several order parameters in multiferroics brings out novel physical phenomena and offers possibilities for new device functions. The revival of research activities on multiferroics is evidenced by some novel discoveries and concepts, both experimentally and theoretically. In this review article, we outline some of the progressive milestones in this st…
Contribution of d-electron to ferroelectricity of type-II multiferroics causes strong magneto-electric coupling and distinguishes them from the conventional type-I multiferroics. However, their therein polarization is too small because the ferroelectricity is merely a derivative from the magnetic order. Here we report a new class of multiferroic materials, monolayer VOX2 (X = Cl, Br, and I), which combine the advantages of type-I and type-II multiferroics. Both ferroelectricity and magnetism arise from the same V cation, where the filled d-orbital is perpendicular to an a priori ferroelectric …
We have investigated magnetic field dependences of a ferroelectric incommensurate-helimagnetic order in a trigonal magneto-electric (ME) multiferroic CuFe1-xAlxO2 with x=0.015, which exhibits the ferroelectric phase as a ground state, by means of neutron diffraction, magnetization and dielectric polarization measurements under magnetic fields applied along various directions. From the present results, we have established the H-T magnetic phase diagrams for the three principal directions of magnetic fields; (i) parallel to the c axis, (ii) parallel to the helical axis, and (iii) perpendicular t…
We have investigated the field-induced-changes in both the magnetization and the polarization in ferromagnet/Insulator/ferroelectric (FM/I/FE) multilayer by following both the Stoner-Wohlfarth (SW) model and the Landau theory. It has been found that with the stresses introduced in the FM/I/FE structure by the fields, both the magnetization and the polarization states can be significantly modified and the combination of their states can be of multiple states. These results demonstrate the feasibility of combining both the spintronics and the ferroelectrics into the multiferroictronics.
We show the first-principles evidence of a hitherto unreported type of ferroelectricity with ultra-long ion-displacement in sodium and potassium hydroxides. Even a small amount of proton vacancies can completely change the mode of proton-transfer from intra-unitcell to trans-unitcell, giving rise to multiferroic soliton with mobile magnetism and a tremendous polarization that can be orders of magnitude higher compared with most perovskite ferroelectrics. Their vertical polarizations of thin-film are robust against depolarizing field, rendering various designs of 2D ferroelectric field-transist…
We propose that concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric, i.e. multiferroic, compounds endowed with electrically-active magnetic excitations (electromagnons) provide a key to produce large directional dichroism for long wavelengths of light. By exploiting the control of ferroelectric polarization and magnetization in a multiferroic oxide Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$, we demonstrate the realization of such a directional light-switch function at terahertz frequecies in resonance with the electromagnon absorption. Our results imply that this hidden potential is present in a broad variety of multiferroics.
The ground state structural, electronic and magnetic properties of multiferroic TbMn$_2$O$_5$ are investigated via first-principles calculations. We show that the ferroelectricity in TbMn$_2$O$_5$ is driven by the non-centrosymmetric magnetic ordering, without invoking the spin-orbit coupling and non-collinear spins. The {\it intrinsic} electric polarization in this compound is calculated to be 1187 $nC\cdot$ cm$^{-2}$, an order of magnitude larger than previously thought.
Oxyhydroxide minerals like FeOOH have been a research focus in geology for studying the Earth interior, and also in chemistry for studying oxygen electrocatalysis activity. In this paper we provide first-principles evidence of a new class of ferroelectrics or multiferroics among them:GaOOH,InOOH,CrOOH,FeOOH, which are earth-abundant minerals and have been experimentally verified to possess distorted rutile structures, are ferroelectric with considerable polarizations(up to 24 muC/cm2) and piezoelectric coefficients. Their atomic-thick layer may possess vertical polarization robust against depo…
We present a strategy to design structures for which a polar lattice distortion induces weak ferromagnetism. We identify a large class of multiferroic oxides as potential realizations and use density-functional theory to screen several promising candidates. By elucidating the interplay between the polarization and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector, we show how the direction of the magnetization can be switched between 180$^{\circ}$ symmetry equivalent states with an applied electric field.
Multiferroics are singular materials that can display simultaneously electric and magnetic orders. Some of them can be ferroelectric and ferromagnetic and, for example, provide the unique opportunity of encoding information independently in electric polarization and magnetization to obtain four different logic states. However, schemes allowing a simple electrical readout of these different states have not been demonstrated so far. In this article, we show that this can be achieved if a multiferroic material is used as the tunnel barrier in a magnetic tunnel junction. We demonstrate that thin f…
We demonstrate that the magnetization of a ferromagnet in contact with an antiferromagnetic multiferroic (LuMnO3) can be speedily reversed by electric field pulsing, and the sign of the magnetic exchange bias can switch and recover isothermally. As LuMnO3 is not ferroelastic, our data conclusively show that this switching is not mediated by strain effects but is a unique electric-field driven decoupling of the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic domains walls. Their distinct dynamics are essential for the observed magnetic switching.
We have identified, for the first time, the change in symmetry at the ferroelectric transition TFE near 1023K of the ferroelectromagnet YMnO3. This transition takes place 300K below the transition to the centrosymmetric state at TIP. Single crystal synchrotron diffraction coupled to a group theoretical analysis show that the paraelectric intermediate phase between TIP and TFE has P63/mcm symmetry. This proves that YMnO3 is a proper ferroelectric and not an improper ferroelectric, as suggested by a previous group theoretical assignment. The origin of the ferroelectricity is caused by a correlat…
Magneto-electric multiferroics exemplified by TbMnO3 possess both magnetic and ferroelectric long-range order. The magnetic order is mostly understood, whereas the nature of the ferroelectricity has remained more elusive. Competing models proposed to explain the ferroelectricity are associated respectively with charge transfer and ionic displacements. Exploiting the magneto-electric coupling, we use an electric field to produce a single magnetic domain state, and a magnetic field to induce ionic displacements. Under these conditions, interference charge-magnetic X-ray scattering arises, encodi…
The low-temperature ferroelectric polarization of multiferroic $YMn_2O_5$ is completely reversed at a critical pressure of 10 kbar and the phase transition from the incommensurate to the commensurate magnetic phase is induced by pressures above 14 kbar. The high-pressure data correlate with thermal expansion measurements indicating a significant lattice strain at the low-temperature transition into the incommensurate phase. The results support the exchange striction model for the ferroelectricity in multiferroic $RMn_2O_5$ compounds and they show the importance of magnetic frustration as well …
The realization of multiferroics in nanostructures, combined with a large electric dipole and ferromagnetic ordering, could lead to new applications, such as high-density multi-state data storage. Although multiferroics have been broadly studied for decades, ferromagnetic ferroelectricity is rarely explored, especially in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Here we report the discovery of 2D ferromagnetic ferroelectricity in layered transition metal halide systems. On the basis of first-principles calculations, we reveal that charged CrBr3 monolayer exhibits in-plane multiferroicity, which is ensure…
Cross-coupling of ordering parameters in multiferroic materials by multiple external stimuli other than electric field and magnetic field is highly desirable from both practical application and fundamental study points of view. Recently, mechanical force has attracted great attention in switching of ferroic ordering parameters via electro-elastic coupling in ferroelectric materials. In this work, mechanical force induced polarization and magnetization switching were investigated in a polycrystalline multiferroic Bi0.9La0.1FeO3 thin film using a scanning probe microscopy system. The piezorespon…
The question of how ferroelectric polarization is coupled to magnetism in magnetoelectric multiferroics, in which both types of order are simultaneously present, is of considerable scientific and practical interest. A recent Letter \cite{fennie} presents an analysis of the important ``ABO$_3$'' class of perovskite multiferroics. This Letter argues that antiferromagnetic multiferroics with magnetic ions on the B site, such as the well-studied room-temperature multiferroic bismuth ferrite (A=Bi, B=Fe), cannot show linear magnetoelectric coupling of the form ${\bf P} \cdot ({\bf L} \times {\bf M}…
Pyro-current measurements have been widely used to study ferroelectric properties in multiferroic materials. However, determination of intrinsic polarization by this method is not straightforward because of leakage current and trapped charge carriers. Here, we demonstrate the formation of internal electric field due to thermally stimulated charge carriers and its influence on ferroelectric polarization in a polycrystalline sample of the well known multiferroic TbMnO$_3$. While an electric field ($E_{ext}$) poling across the ferroelectric transition ($T_C$ $\sim$ 26 K) is essential to obtain de…
Nowdays, multiferroic materials with magnetoelectric coupling have many real-world applications in the fields of novel memory devices. It is challenging is to create multiferroic materials with strongly coupled ferroelectric and ferrimagnetic orderings at room temperature. The single crystal of ferric selenide (Fe3Se4) shows type-II multiferroic due to the coexistence of ferroelectric as well as magnetic ordering at room temperature. We have investigated the lattice instability, electronic structure, ferroelectric, ferrimagnetic ordering and transport properties of ferroelectric metal Fe3Se4. …
We investigate the crystal structure in multiferroic tetragonal perovskite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_3$ with high accuracy of the order of 10$^{-3}$ Angstrom for an atomic displacement. The large atomic displacement for Mn ion from the centerosymmetric position, comparable with the off-centering distortion in the tetragonal ferroelectric BaTiO$_3$, is observed in the ferroelectric phase ($T_\mathrm{N}$ $\leq$ $T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{C}$). In stark contrast, in the multiferroic phase ($T$ $\leq$ $T_\mathrm{N}$), the atomic displacement for Mn ion is suppressed, but those for O ions are enlarged. T…
By means of first-principles simulations, we unambiguously show that improper ferroelectricity in magnetite in the low-temperature insulating phase is driven by charge-ordering. An accurate comparison between monoclinic ferroelectric Cc and paraelectric P2/c structures shows that the polarization arises because of "shifts" of electronic charge between octahedral Fe sites, leading to a non-centrosymmetric Fe2+/Fe3+ charge-ordered pattern. Our predicted values for polarization, in good agreement with available experimental values, are discussed in terms of point-charge dipoles located on selecte…
We describe the directional growth of ferroelectric domains in a multiferroic BiFeO3 thin film, which was grown epitaxially on a vicinal (001) SrTiO3 substrate. A detailed structural analysis of the film shows that a strain gradient, which can create a symmetry breaking in a ferroelectric double well potential, causes ferroelectric domains to grow with preferred directionality under the influence of an electric field. Our results suggest the possibility of controlling the direction of domain growth with an electric field by imposing constraints on ferroelectric films, such as a strain gradient…
The control of the electron spin by external means is a key issue for spintronic devices. Using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (SARPES) with three-dimensional spin detection, we demonstrate operando electrostatic spin manipulation in ferroelectric GeTe and multiferroic Ge1-xMnxTe. We not only demonstrate for the first time electrostatic spin manipulation in Rashba semiconductors due to ferroelectric polarization reversal, but are also able to follow the switching pathway in detail, and show a gain of the Rashba-splitting strength under external fields. In multiferroic Ge1-…
