A simple but general microscopic mechanism to understand the interplay between the electric and magnetic degrees of freedom is developed. Within this mechanism, the magnetic structure generates an electric current which induce an counterbalance electric current from the spin orbital coupling. When the magnetic structure is described by a single order parameter, the electric polarization is determined by the single spin orbital coupling parameter, and the material is predicted to be a half insulator. This mechanism provides a simple estimation of the value of ferroelectricity and sets a physical limitation as well.
We present a unique example of giant magnetoelectric effect in a conventional multiferroic HoMnO3, where polarization is very large (~56 mC/m2) and the ferroelectric transition temperature is higher than the magnetic ordering temperature by an order. We attribute the uniqueness of the giant magnetoelectric effect to the ferroelectricity induced entirely by the off-center displacement of rare earth ions with large magnetic moments. We report the dielectric dispersion of the giant magnetocapacitance (GMC) in multiferroic DyMnO$_{3}$ over a wide frequency range. The GMC is found to be attributable not to the softened electromagnon but to the electric-field-driven motion of multiferroic domain wall (DW). In contrast to conventional ferroelectric DWs, the present multiferroic DW motion holds extremely high relaxation rate of $\sim$$10^{7}$ s$^{-1}$ even at low temperatures. We present a first principles study of the series of multiferroic barium fluorides with the composition BaMF4, where M is Mn, Fe, Co, or Ni. We discuss trends in the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties, and we show that the ferroelectricity in these systems results from the "freezing in" of a single unstable polar phonon mode. In contrast to the case of the standard perovskite ferroelectrics, this structural distortion is not accompanied by charge transfer between cations and anions. Using first principles calculations, we study the microscopic origin of ferroelectricity (FE) induced by magnetic order in the orthorhombic HoMnO3. We obtain the largest ferroelectric polarization observed in the whole class of improper magnetic ferroelectrics to date. We studied magnetic excitations in a low-temperature ferroelectric phase of the multiferroic YMn2O5 using inelastic neutron scattering (INS). We identify low-energy magnon modes and establish a correspondence between the magnon peaks observed by INS and electromagnon peaks observed in optical absorption [1]. Furthermore, we explain the microscopic mechanism, which results in the lowest-energy electromagnon peak, by comparing the inelastic neutron spectral weight with the polarization in the commensurate ferroelectric phase.
We show that electronic correlations decimate the intrinsic ferroelectric polarization of the recently discovered class of multiferroic manganites RMn$_2$O$_5$, where R is a rare earth element. Such is manifest from {\it ab initio} bandstructure computations that account for the strong local Coulomb interactions between the manganese 3d electrons --the root of magnetism in these materials. We report the remarkably robust ferroelectric state in the multiferroic compound Mn$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$WO$_4$. The substitution of the magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ with nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$ reduces the magnetic exchange and provides control of the various magnetic and multiferroic states of MnWO$_4$. Only 5 % of Zn substitution results in a complete suppression of the frustrated collinear (paraelectric) low temperature phase. Neutron diffraction measurements on multiferroic LuFe2O4 show changes in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure characterized by wavevector q = (1/3 1/3 1/2) as a function of electric field cooling procedures. Soc 133, 16920 (2011)], a rhombohedral antiferromagnetic insulator which crystallizes in the highly distorted R3c crystal structure. We find this compound electrically polarized, with a very large electric polarization of about 100 (\muC/cm)^2, thus even exceeding the polarization of well-known BiFeO3. We report that CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ is a new magnetic multiferroic material. The appearance of a ferroelectric polarization coinciding with the magnetic phase transition ($\sim90$ K) suggests the presence of ferroelectricity induced by magnetism, further confirmed by its strong magnetoelectric response. We report the discovery of a complete suppression of ferroelectricity in $MnWO_4$ by 10 % iron substitution and its restoration in external magnetic fields. The spontaneous polarization in $Mn_{0.9}Fe_{0.1}WO_4$ arises below 12 K in external fields above 4 T. Artificial superlattices of (BiFeO3)m(SrTiO3)m (m= 1 to 10 unit cells) consisting of multiferroic BiFeO3 and insulating SrTiO3 layers were fabricated on (100)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. The remnant polarization and leakage current behavior were studied varying the periodicity (8-80A) of the superlattice. We report $α$-Cu$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ to be an improper multiferroic with the simultaneous development of electric polarization and magnetization below $T_C$ = 35 K. The observed spontaneous polarization of magnitude 0.55 $μ$Ccm$^{-2}$ is highest among the copper based improper multiferroic materials. Our study demonstrates sizable amount of magneto-electric coupling below $T_C$ even with a low magnetic field. We report on low-energy electron microscopy imaging of ferroelectric domains with submicron resolution. Periodic strips of 'up' and 'down'-polarized ferroelectric domains in bismuth ferrite -a room temperature multiferroic- serve as a model system to compare low-energy electron microscopy with the established piezoresponse force microscopy. The results confirm the possibility of full-field imaging of ferroelectric domains with short acquisition times by exploiting the sensitivity of ultraslow electrons to small variations of the electric potential near surfaces in the "mirror" operation mode.
We present a first-principles density functional study of the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the ferroelectric domain walls in multiferroic BiFeO3. We find that domain walls in which the rotations of the oxygen octahedra do not change their phase when the polarization reorients are the most favorable, and of these the 109 degree domain wall centered around the BiO plane has the lowest energy. We deduce the intrinsic conductivity properties of the ferroelectric domain walls around the topologically protected domain vortex cores in multiferroic YMnO3. This is achieved by performing a careful equivalent-circuit analysis of dielectric spectra measured in single-crystalline samples with different vortex densities. We propose that concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric, i.e. multiferroic, compounds endowed with electrically-active magnetic excitations (electromagnons) provide a key to produce large directional dichroism for long wavelengths of light. By exploiting the control of ferroelectric polarization and magnetization in a multiferroic oxide Ba$_2$CoGe$_2$O$_7$, we demonstrate the realization of such a directional light-switch function at terahertz frequecies in resonance with the electromagnon absorption. Our results imply that this hidden potential is present in a broad variety of multiferroics.
Neutron powder diffraction and single crystal x-ray resonant magnetic scattering measurements suggest that Dy plays an active role in enhancing the ferroelectric polarization in multiferroic DyMnO3 above TNDy = 6.5 K. We observe the evolution of an incommensurate ordering of Dy moments with the same periodicity as the Mn spiral ordering. It closely tracks the evolution of the ferroelectric polarization which reaches a maximum value of 0.2 muC/m^2. Below TNDy, where Dy spins order commensurately, the polarization decreases to values similar for those of TbMnO3.

For the past decades, the low-temperature phase of Ca$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ below the 48K first-order phase transition remains a puzzle with controversial suggestions involving metallic ferroelectric, orbital or magnetic ordering. We have discovered strong magnetoelectric (ME) effects in the single chiral-helical magnetic state of single-crystalline langasite Ba3NbFe3Si2O14 that is crystallographically chiral. The ferroelectric polarization, predominantly aligned along the a axis below the Neel temperature of ~27 K, changes in a highly non-linear fashion in the presence of in-plane magnetic fields (H) perpendicular to the a axis (H//b*). We report for the first time, that Fe3Se4 is a room temperature, type-II multiferroic with magnetoelectric coupling. We observed the coexistence of coupled ferrimagnetic and ferroelectric ordering in Fe3Se4nanorods well above room temperature, which is a hard magnet with large magnetocrystalline anisotropy. For the first time, we observed spontaneous, reversible ferroelectric polarization in Fe3Se4 nanorods below the magnetic Curie temperature. Multiferroic CuFe1-xAlxO2 (x=0.02) exhibits a ferroelectric ordering accompanied by a proper helical magnetic ordering below T=7K under zero magnetic field. By polarized neutron diffraction and pyroelectric measurements, we have revealed a one-to-one correspondence between the spin helicity and the direction of the spontaneous electric polarization. This result indicates that the spin helicity of the proper helical magnetic ordering is essential for the ferroelectricity in CuFe1-xAlxO2. Electric polarization in conventional ferroelectric oxides usually involves nonmagnetic transition-metal ions with an empty d shell (the d$^0$ rule). Here we unravel a new mechanism for local electric dipoles based on magnetic Fe$^{3+}$ (3d$^5$) ion violating the d$^0$ rule. The competition between the long-range Coulomb interaction and short-range Pauli repulsion in a FeO$_5$ bipyramid with proper lattice parameters would favor an off-center displacement of Fe$^{3+}$ that induces a local electric dipole. We report the observation of a magnetic polarization of the O\,$2p$-states in YMn$_2$O$_5$ through the use of soft X-ray resonant scattering at the oxygen $K$-edge. Remarkably, we find that the temperature dependence of the integrated intensity of this signal closely follows the macroscopic electric polarization, and hence is proportional to the ferroelectric order parameter. This is in contrast to the temperature dependence observed at the Mn\,$L_3$-edge, which reflects the Mn magnetic order parameter. We have investigated dielectric properties in a series of crystals of $R$MnO$_{3}$ ($R$ is a rare earth ion) under magnetic fields and quasihydrostatic pressure. We have found that ferroelectric phase appeared in GdMnO$_3$ crystal below 13K. We have confirmed that a small spontaneous polarization exists along a axis ($P_a$) in the orthorhombic $Pbnm$ setting and that $P_a$ can be reversed by the dc electric field. Ferroelectric properties of cubic chiral magnet Cu2OSeO3 can emerge due to the spin noncollinearity induced by antiferromagnetic cantings. These cantings are the result of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and in many ways similar to the ferromagnetic cantings in weak ferromagnets. An expression for the local electric polarization is derived, including terms with gradients of magnetization M(r). We study magnetic state and electron transport properties of composite multiferroic system consisting of a granular ferromagnetic thin film placed above the ferroelectric substrate. Ferroelectricity and magnetism in this case are coupled by the long-range Coulomb interaction. We show that magnetic state and magneto-transport strongly depend on temperature, external electric field, and electric polarization of the substrate.
