We studied the microscopic mechanism of multiferroics, in particular with the "spin current" model (Hosho Katsura, Naoto Nagaosa and Aleander V. Balatsky, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 057205 (2005)). Starting from a system with helical spin configuration, we solved for the forms of the electron wave functions and analyzed their characteristics. The relation between ferroelectricity and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (I. Dzyaloshinskii, J. Phys. Chem. Solids 4, 241 (1958) and T. Moriya, Phys. Rev. 120, 91 (1960)) is clearly established. There is also a simple relation between the electric polarization and the wave vector of magnetic orders. Finally, we show that the bond-bending exists in transition metal oxides can enhance ferroelectricity.
Multiferroics, showing simultaneous ordering of electrical and magnetic degrees of freedom, are remarkable materials as seen from both the academic and technological points of view. A prominent mechanism of multiferroicity is the spin-driven ferroelectricity, often found in frustrated antiferromagnets with helical spin order. There, similar to conventional ferroelectrics, the electrical dipoles arise from an off-centre displacement of ions. However, recently a different mechanism, namely purely electronic ferroelectricity, where charge order breaks inversion symmetry, has attracted considerabl…
Ferroelectric properties of cubic chiral magnet Cu2OSeO3 can emerge due to the spin noncollinearity induced by antiferromagnetic cantings. These cantings are the result of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and in many ways similar to the ferromagnetic cantings in weak ferromagnets. An expression for the local electric polarization is derived, including terms with gradients of magnetization M(r). When averaged over the crystal the electric polarization has a non-vanishing part associated with the anisotropy of the crystal point group 23. In the framework of the microscopic theory, it is sho…
We present a first principles study of the series of multiferroic barium fluorides with the composition BaMF4, where M is Mn, Fe, Co, or Ni. We discuss trends in the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties, and we show that the ferroelectricity in these systems results from the "freezing in" of a single unstable polar phonon mode. In contrast to the case of the standard perovskite ferroelectrics, this structural distortion is not accompanied by charge transfer between cations and anions. Thus, the ferroelectric instability in the multiferroic barium fluorides arises solely due to size …
We present the results of broadband dielectric spectroscopy of GaMo$_4$S$_8$, a lacunar spinel system that recently was shown to exhibit non-canonical, orbitally-driven ferroelectricity. Our study reveals complex relaxation dynamics of this multiferroic material, both above and below its Jahn-Teller transition at T$_{\textrm{JT}}=47$ K. Above T$_{\textrm{JT}}$, two types of coupled dipolar-orbital dynamics seem to compete: relaxations within cluster-like regions with short-range polar order like in relaxor ferroelectrics and critical fluctuations of only weakly interacting dipoles, the latter …
Multiferroics - materials which are simultaneously (ferro)magnetic and ferroelectric, and often also ferroelastic, attract now considerable attention, both because of the interesting physics involved and as they promise important practical applications. In this paper I give a survey of microscopic factors determining the coexistence of these properties, and discuss different possible routes to combine them in one material. In particular the role of the occupation of d-states in transition metal perovskites is discussed, possible role of spiral magnetic structures is stressed and the novel mech…
With the perovskite multiferroic RMnO3 (R = Gd, Tb, Dy) as guidance, we argue that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) provides the microscopic mechanism for the coexistence and strong coupling between ferroelectricity and incommensurate magnetism. We use Monte-Carlo simulations and zero temperature exact calculations to study a model incorporating the double-exchange, superexchange, Jahn-Teller and DMI terms. The phase diagram contains a multiferroic phase between A and E antiferromagnetic phases, in excellent agreement with experiments.
Polar metals are defined by the coexistence of metallicity and polar crystal structure. They have potential applications in non-linear optics, ferroelectric devices, and quantum devices. Meanwhile, ferroelectric-ferromagnetic (FE-FM) multiferroics display simultaneous ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism, leading to new technologies in information storage. It remains an open question whether metallicity, ferroelectricity, and ferromagnetism can coexist in a single domain of a material. EuTiO$_3$ is actively studied for potential applications in magnetic sensors, memories, magneto-optical device…
Using first principles calculations, we study the microscopic origin of ferroelectricity (FE) induced by magnetic order in the orthorhombic HoMnO3. We obtain the largest ferroelectric polarization observed in the whole class of improper magnetic ferroelectrics to date. We find that the two proposed mechanisms for FE in multiferroics, lattice- and electronic-based, are simultaneously active in this compound: a large portion of the ferroelectric polarization arises due to quantum-mechanical effects of electron orbital polarization, in addition to the conventional polar atomic displacements. An i…
The ferroelectricity of multiferroics induced by spin order is commonly explained by considering either purely electronic or ion-displacement contribution. However, there is no general model which includes both effects simultaneously. Here, we suggest a realistic model to describe the ion-displacement part of the ferroelectricity based on the spin-lattice coupling Hamiltonian. Combining this model with our previous pure electronic model for spin-order induced polarization, we propose a unified model that includes both effects. By applying the unified model to representative multiferroics where…
We have investigated dielectric properties in a series of crystals of $R$MnO$_{3}$ ($R$ is a rare earth ion) under magnetic fields and quasihydrostatic pressure. We have found that ferroelectric phase appeared in GdMnO$_3$ crystal below 13K. We have confirmed that a small spontaneous polarization exists along a axis ($P_a$) in the orthorhombic $Pbnm$ setting and that $P_a$ can be reversed by the dc electric field. The dielectric anomaly due to the ferroelectric transition accompanied thermal hysteresis and lattice striction. The ferroelectric transition temperature decreased with quasihydrosta…
By performing density functional calculations, we investigate the origin of the skyrmion state and ferroelectricity in Cu2OSeO3. We find that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions between the two different kinds of Cu ions are extremely strong and induce the helical ground state and the skyrmion state in the absence and presence of magnetic field, respectively. On the basis of the general model for the spin-order induced polarization, we propose that the ferroelectric polarization of Cu2OSeO3 in the collinear ferrimagnetic state arises from an unusual mechanism, i.e., the single-spin-site con…
Measurements of ferroelectric polarization and dielectric constant were done on $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$ ($R$=Tb, Dy, and Ho) with applied hydrostatic pressures of up to 18 kbar. At ambient pressure, distinctive anomalies were observed in the temperature profile of both physical properties at critical temperatures marking the onset of long range AFM order (T$_{N1}$), ferroelectricity (T$_{C1}$) as well as at temperatures when anomalous changes in the polarization, dielectric constant and spin wave commensurability have been previously reported. In particular, the step in the dielectric constant at low t…
By studying the dielectric properties of the geometrically frustrated spinel CdV2O4, we observe ferroelectricity developing at the transition into the collinear antiferromagnetic ground state. In this multiferroic spinel, ferroelectricity is driven by local magnetostriction and not by the more common scenario of spiral magnetism. The experimental findings are corroborated by ab-initio calculations of the electric polarization and the underlying spin and orbital order. The results point towards a charge rearrangement due to dimerization, where electronic correlations and the proximity to the in…
We have performed dielectric measurements and neutron diffraction experiments on the double perovskite In2NiMnO6. A ferroelectric polarization, P ~ 30 μC/m2, is observed in a polycrystalline sample below TN = 26 K where a magnetic phase ransition occurs. The neutron diffraction experiment demonstrates that a complex noncollinear magnetic structure with "cycloidal" and "proper screw" components appears below TN, which has the incommensurate propagation vector k = (ka,0,ks; ka ~ 0.274, ks ~ -0.0893). The established magnetic point group 21' implies that the macroscopic ferroelectric polarization…
We investigate the possible types of coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism for the zig-zag spin chain multiferroic LiCu2O2 compound. We construct a multi-order parameter phenomenological model for the material based on a group theoretical analysis. From our calculation we conclude that a coupling involving the inter-chain magnetic structure and ferroelectricity is necessary to understand the experimental results of Park et.al. Our proposed model is able to account for the electric polarization flop in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. Furthermore, based on our the…
Multiferroic rare earth manganites attracted recent attention because of the coexistence of different types of magnetic and ferroelectric orders resulting in complex phase diagrams and a wealth of physical phenomena. The coupling and mutual interference of the different orders and the large magnetoelectric effect observed in several compounds are of fundamental interest and bear the potential for future applications in which the dielectric (magnetic) properties can be modified by the onset of a magnetic (dielectric) transition or the application of a magnetic (electric) field. The physical mec…
In this contribution to the special issue on multiferroics we focus on multiferroicity driven by different forms of charge ordering. We will present the generic mechanisms by which charge ordering can induce ferroelectricity in magnetic systems. There is a number of specific classes of materials for which this is relevant. We will discuss in some detail $(i)$ perovskite manganites of the type (PrCa)MnO$_3$, $(ii)$ the complex and interesting situation in magnetite Fe$_3$O$_4$, $(iii)$ strongly ferroelectric frustrated LuFe$_2$O$_4$, $(iv)$ an example of a quasi one-dimensional organic system. …
Multiferroics, defined for those multifunctional materials in which two or more kinds of fundamental ferroicities coexist, have become one of the hottest topics of condensed matter physics and materials science in recent years. The coexistence of several order parameters in multiferroics brings out novel physical phenomena and offers possibilities for new device functions. The revival of research activities on multiferroics is evidenced by some novel discoveries and concepts, both experimentally and theoretically. In this review article, we outline some of the progressive milestones in this st…
Large electron-electron Coulomb-interactions in correlated systems can lead to a periodic arrangement of localized electrons, the so called "charge-order". The latter is here proposed as a driving force behind ferroelectricity in iron fluoride K0.6FeF3. By means of density functional theory, we propose different non-centrosymmetric d5/d6 charge-ordering patterns, each giving rise to polarization along different crystallographic axes and with different magnitudes. Accordingly, we introduce the concept of "ferroelectric anistropy" (peculiar to improper ferroelectrics with polarization induced by…
Multiferroics with coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism have been pursued for decades. However, their magnetoelectric performances remain limited due to the common trade-off between ferroelectricity and magnetism. Here, a family of nitride perovskites is proposed as multiferroics with prominent physical properties and nontrivial mechanisms. Taking GdWN$_3$ as a prototype, our first-principles calculations found that its perovskite phases own large polarizations (e.g. $111.3$ $μ$C/cm$^2$ for the $R3c$ phase) and a magnetic moment $7$ $μ_{\rm B}$/Gd$^{3+}$. More interestingly, its fer…
Multiferroics with intrinsic ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity are highly desired but rather rare, while most ferroelectric magnets are antiferromagnetic. A recent theoretical work [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 99}, 195434 (2019)] predicted that oxyhalides VO$X_2$ ($X$: halogen) monolayers are two-dimensional multiferroics by violating the empirical $d^0$ rule. Most interestingly, the member VOI$_2$ are predicted to exhibit spontaneous ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity. In this work, we extend the previous study on the structure and magnetism of VOI$_2$ monolayer by using density functional theory an…
Neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and dielectric constant measurements of single crystal Co3TeO6 have been measured to study the interplay between the ferroelectricity and magnetic order. Long range incommensurate magnetic order develops below TM1=26 K, which is followed by three additional zero-field phase transitions at TM2=19.5 K, TM3=18 K, and TM4=16 K where the incommensurate order changes and commensurate order develops. In magnetic fields up to 14 T we find that the magnetic intensities and incommensurate wave vector are dramatically altered as ferroelectricit…
Some of the Multiferroics [1] form a rare class of materials that exhibit magnetoelectric coupling arising from the coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity, with potential for many technological applications.[2,3] Over the last decade, an active research on multiferroics has resulted in the identification of a few routes that lead to multiferroicity in bulk materials.[4-6] While ferroelectricity in a classic ferroelectric such as BaTiO3 is expected to diminish with the reducing particle size,[7,8] ferromagnetism cannot occur in its bulk form.[9] Here, we use a combination of experim…
The orthovanadate DyVO3 crystal, known to exhibit multiple structural, spin and orbital ordering transitions, is presently investigated on the basis of magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity, dielectric and polarization measurements. Our main result is experimental evidence for the existence of multiferroicity below a high TC of 108 K over a wide temperature range including different spin-orbital ordered states. The onset of ferroelectricity is found to coincide with the antiferromagnetic C-type spin ordering transition taking place at 108 K, which indicates that DyVO3 belongs to type II mu…
Low-energy magnon excitations in multiferroic BiFeO$_3$ were measured in detail as a function of temperature around several Brillouin zone centers by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals. Unique features around 1 meV are directly associated with the interplay of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and a small single-ion anisotropy. The temperature dependence of these and the exchange interactions were determined by fitting the measured magnon dispersion with spin-wave calculations. The spectra best fits an easy-axis type magnetic anisotropy and the deduced exchange and…
We have investigated the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of Pb-based langasite compound Pb$_3$TeMn$_3$P$_2$O$_{14}$ both experimentally and theoretically in the light of metal-oxygen covalency, and the consequent generation of multiferroicity. It is known that large covalency between Pb 6$p$ and O 2$p$ plays instrumental role behind stereochemical lone pair activity of Pb. The same happens here but a subtle structural phase transition above room temperature changes the degree of such lone pair activity and the system becomes ferroelectric below 310 K. Interestingly, this structu…
In order to clarify the mechanism associated with pressure/magnetic-field-induced giant ferroelectric polarization in TbMnO3, this work investigated changes in magnetic ordering brought about by variations in temperature, magnetic field, and pressure. This was accomplished by means of neutron diffraction analyses under high pressures and high magnetic fields, employing a single crystal. The incommensurate magnetic ordering of a cycloid structure was found to be stable below the reported critical pressure of 4.5 GPa. In contrast, a commensurate E-type spin ordering of Mn spins and a noncollinea…
High resolution inelastic neutron scattering reveals that the elementary magnetic excitations in multiferroic MnWO4 consist of low energy dispersive electromagnons in addition to the well-known spin-wave excitations. The latter can well be modeled by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with magnetic exchange coupling extending to the 12th nearest neighbor. They exhibit a spin-wave gap of 0.61(1) meV. Two electromagnon branches appear at lower energies of 0.07(1) meV and 0.45(1) meV at the zone center. They reflect the dynamic magnetoelectric coupling and persist in both, the collinear magnetic and parael…
Competing interactions and geometric frustration provide favourable conditions for exotic states of matter. Such competition often causes multiple phase transitions as a function of temperature and can lead to magnetic structures that break inversion symmetry, thereby inducing ferroelectricity [1-4]. Although this phenomenon is understood phenomenologically [3-4], it is of great interest to have a conceptually simpler system in which ferroelectricity appears coincident with a single magnetic phase transition. Here we report the first such direct transition from a paramagnetic and paraelectric …
Magnetic rare earths R have been proven to have a significant effect on the multiferroic properties of the orthorhombic manganites RMnO3. A re-examination of previous results from synchrotron based x-ray scattering experiments suggests that symmetric exchange striction between neighboring R and Mn ions may account for the enhancement of the ferroelectric polarization in DyMnO3 as well as the magnetic-field induced ferroelectricity in GdMnO3. In general, adding a second magnetic species to a multiferroic material may be a route to enhance its ferroelectric properties.
Magnetic and dielectric properties of the hexagonal triangular lattice antiferromagnet 2H-AgFeO2 have been studied by neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, pyroelectric current, and dielectric constant measurements. The ferroelectric polarization, P ~ 5 μC/m2, has been found to appear below 11 K due to a polar nature of the magnetic ground state of the system. In the temperature range of 11 K < T < 18 K, an incommensurate spin density wave (ICM1) with the nonpolar magnetic point group mmm1' and the k1 = (0,q1_b,0; q1_b = 0.390-0.405)propagation vector takes place. Below …
We study the dynamical interplay between ferroelectricity and magnetism in a multiferroic with a helical magnetic order. We show that the dynamical exchange-striction induces a biquadratic interaction between the spins and transverse phonons resulting in quantum fluctuations of the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization $\mathbf{P}$ in the ferroelectric phase. The hybridization between the spin wave and the fluctuation of the electric polarization leads to low-lying transverse phonon modes. Those are perpendicular to $\mathbf{P}$ and to the helical spins at small wave vector but then turn para…
We propose a microscopic theory for magnetic switching of electric polarization (P) in the spin-spiral multiferroics by taking TbMnO3 and DyMnO3 as examples. We reproduce their phase diagrams under a magnetic field H_ex by Monte-Carlo simulation of an accurate spin model and reveal that competition among the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, spin anisotropy, and spin exchange is controlled by the applied H_ex, resulting in magnetic transitions accompanied by reorientation or vanishing of P. We also discuss the relevance of the proposed mechanisms to many other multiferroics such as LiCu2O2, M…
Achieving multiferroic two-dimensional (2D) materials should enable numerous functionalities in nanoscale devices. Until now, however, predicted 2D multiferroics are very few and with coexisting yet only loosely coupled (type-I) ferroelectricity and magnetism. Here, a type-II multiferroic MXene Hf$_{2}$VC$_{2}$F$_{2}$ monolayer is identified, where ferroelectricity originates directly from its magnetism. The noncollinear Y-type spin order generates a polarization perpendicular to the spin helical plane. Remarkably, the multiferroic transition is estimated to occur above room temperature. Our i…
Multiferroics, materials where spontaneous long-range magnetic and dipolar orders coexist, represent an attractive class of compounds, which combine rich and fascinating fundamental physics with a technologically appealing potential for applications in the general area of spintronics. Ab-initio calculations have significantly contributed to recent progress in this area, by elucidating different mechanisms for multiferroicity and providing essential information on various compounds where these effects are manifestly at play. In particular, here we present examples of density-functional theory i…
We theoretically study origins of the ferroelectricity in the multiferroic phases of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites, RMnO3, by constructing a realistic spin model including the spin-phonon coupling, which reproduces the entire experimental phase diagram in the plane of temperature and Mn-O-Mn bond angle for the first time. Surprisingly we reveal a significant contribution of the symmetric (S.S)-type magnetostriction to the ferroelectricity even in a spin-spiral-based multiferroic phase, which can be larger than the usually expected antisymmetric (SxS)-type contribution. This explains well t…
We report a comprehensive specific heat and inelastic neutron scattering study to explore the possible origin of multiferroicity in HoCrO$_3$. We have performed specific heat measurements in the temperature range 100 mK - 290 K and inelastic neutron scattering measurements were performed in the temperature range 1.5 - 200 K. From the specific heat data we determined hyperfine splitting at 22.5(2) $μ$eV and crystal field transitions at 1.379(5) meV, 10.37(4) meV, 15.49(9) meV and 23.44(9) meV, indicating the existence of strong hyperfine and crystal field interactions in HoCrO$_3$. Further, an …
Tungstates $A$WO$_4$ with the wolframite structure characterized by the $A$O$_6$ octahedral zigzag chains along the $c$-axis, can be magnetic if $A$=Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Ni. Among them, MnWO$_4$ is a unique member with a cycloid Mn$^{2+}$ spin order developed at low temperature, leading to an interesting type-II multiferroic behavior. However, so far no other multiferroic material in the tungstate family has been found. In this work, we present the synthesis and the systematic study of the double tungstate LiFe(WO$_4$)$_2$. Experimental characterizations including structural, thermodynamic, magneti…
The ferroelectricity of the spiral magnets LiCu2O2 and LiCuVO4 was examined by calculating the electric polarizations of their spin spiral states on the basis of density functional theory with spin-orbit coupling. Our work unambiguously reveals that spin-orbit coupling is responsible for the ferroelectricity with the primary contribution from the spin-orbit coupling on the Cu sites, but the asymmetric density distribution responsible for the electric polarization occurs mainly around the O atoms. The electric polarization is calculated to be much greater for the ab- than for the bc-plane spin …
Electric control of multiferroic domains is demonstrated through polarized magnetic neutron diffraction. Cooling to the cycloidal multiferroic phase of Ni3V2O8 in an electric field (E) causes the incommensurate Bragg reflections to become neutron spin polarizing, the sense of neutron polarization reversing with E. Quantitative analysis indicates the E-treated sample has handedness that can be reversed by E. We further show close association between cycloidal and ferroelectric domains through E-driven spin and electric polarization hysteresis. We suggest that definite cycloidal handedness is ac…
By using polarized inelastic neutron scattering measurements, we show that the spin-lattice quantum entanglement in mutliferroics results in hybrid elementary excitations, involving spin and lattice degrees of freedom. These excitations can be considered as multiferroic Godstone modes. We argue that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction could be at the origin of this hybridization.
An investigation of the spatially resolved distribution of domains in the multiferroic phase of MnWO$_4$ reveals that characteristic features of magnetic and ferroelectric domains are inseparably entangled. Consequently, the concept of "multiferroic hybrid domains" is introduced for compounds in which ferroelectricity is induced by magnetic order. The three-dimensional structure of the domains is resolved. Annealing cycles reveal a topological memory effect that goes beyond previously reported memory effects and allows one to reconstruct the entire multiferroic multidomain structure subsequent…
The phenomenological theory of ferroelectricity in spiral magnets presented in [M. Mostovoy, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 067601 (2006)] is generalized to describe consistently states with both uniform and modulated-in-space ferroelectric polarizations. A key point in this description is the symmetric part of the magnetoelectric coupling since, although being irrelevant for the uniform component, it plays an essential role for the non-uniform part of the polarization. We illustrate this importance in generic examples of modulated magnetic systems: longitudinal and transverse spin-density wave states a…
We present a unique example of giant magnetoelectric effect in a conventional multiferroic HoMnO3, where polarization is very large (~56 mC/m2) and the ferroelectric transition temperature is higher than the magnetic ordering temperature by an order. We attribute the uniqueness of the giant magnetoelectric effect to the ferroelectricity induced entirely by the off-center displacement of rare earth ions with large magnetic moments. This finding suggests a new avenue to design multiferroics with large polarization and higher ferroelectric transition temperature as well as large magnetoelectric e…
We report multiferroic behavior in double perovskite Y2CoMnO6 with ferroelectric transition temperature Tc = 80K. The origin of ferroelectricity is associated with magnetic ordering of Co2+ and Mn4+ moments in a up-up-down-down arrangement. The saturation polarization and magnetization are estimated to be 65 uC/m2 and 6.2 Bohr magneton/f.u. respectively. The magnetoelectric coupling parameter, on the other hand, is small as a 5 Tesla field suppresses the electric polarization by only ~8%. This is corroborated with observed hysteretic behaviour at 5K that remains unsaturated even upto 7 Tesla. …
Beyond a conventional classification of ferroelectricity, there is a class of materials where electronic degrees of freedom and electronic interactions are directly responsible for electric polarization and ferroelectric transition. This is termed electronic ferroelectricity. In this article, we review electronic ferroelectricity from a view point of frustration. Experimental and theoretical examinations in spin driven ferroelectric materials, recently termed multiferroics, are introduced. Spin frustration caused by competing magnetic interactions is of prime importance for this type of ferroe…
We show that the symmetry of the spin zigzag chain E phase of the orthorhombic perovskite manganites and nickelates allows for the existence of a finite ferroelectric polarization. The proposed microscopic mechanism is independent of spin-orbit coupling. We predict that the polarization induced by the E-type magnetic order can potentially be enhanced by up to two orders of magnitude with respect to that in the spiral magnetic phases of TbMnO3 and similar multiferroic compounds.
We have studied the magnetic structure of the ferroelectric frustrated spin-1/2 chain material LiCuVO4 in applied electric and magnetic fields using polarized neutrons. A symmetry and mean-field analysis of the data rules out the presence of static Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, while exchange striction is shown to be negligible by our specific-heat measurements. The experimentally observed magnetoelectric coupling is in excellent agreement with the predictions of a purely electronic mechanism based on spin supercurrents.
The possibility of multiferroicity arising from charge ordering in LuFe2O4 and structurally related rare earth ferrites is reviewed. Recent experimental work on macroscopic indications of ferroelectricity and microscopic determination of coupled spin and charge order indicates that this scenario does not hold. Understanding the origin of the experimentally observed charge and spin order will require further theoretical work. Other aspects of recent research in these materials, such as geometrical frustration effects, possible electric-field-induced transitions, or orbital order are also briefl…
Multiferroics are singular materials that can display simultaneously electric and magnetic orders. Some of them can be ferroelectric and ferromagnetic and, for example, provide the unique opportunity of encoding information independently in electric polarization and magnetization to obtain four different logic states. However, schemes allowing a simple electrical readout of these different states have not been demonstrated so far. In this article, we show that this can be achieved if a multiferroic material is used as the tunnel barrier in a magnetic tunnel junction. We demonstrate that thin f…
Titanates with the perovskite structure, including ferroelectrics (e.g., BaTiO$_3$) and ferromagnetic ones (e.g., YTiO$_3$), are important functional materials. Recent theoretical studies predicted multiferroic states in strained EuTiO$_3$ and titanate superlattices, the former of which has already been experimental confirmed. Here, a first-principles calculation is performed to investigate the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of Y half-substituted LaTiO3. Our results reveal that the magnetism of Y$_{0.5}$La$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ sensitively depends on its structural details because of…
A systematic microscopic theory of magnetically induced ferroelectricity and lattice modulation is presented for all electron configurations of Mott-insulating transition-metal oxides. Various mechanisms of polarization are identified in terms of a strong-coupling perturbation theory. Especially, the spin-orbit interaction acting on the ligand p orbitals is shown to give the ferroelectric polarization of the spin-current form, which plays a crucial role particularly in eg systems. Semiquantitative agreements with the multiferroic TbMnO3 are obtained. Predictions for X-ray and neutron scatterin…
