Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group and $n\geqslant 1$ an integer. Consider the space of ordered commuting $n$-tuples in $G$, $Hom(\mathbb{Z}^n,G)$, and its quotient under the adjoint action, $Rep(\mathbb{Z}^n,G):=Hom(\mathbb{Z}^n,G)/G$. In this article we study and in many cases compute the homotopy groups $π_2(Hom(\mathbb{Z}^n,G))$. For $G$ simply--connected and simple we show that $π_2(Hom(\mathbb{Z}^2,G))\cong \mathbb{Z}$ and $π_2(Rep(\mathbb{Z}^2,G))\cong \mathbb{Z}$, and that on these groups the quotient map $Hom(\mathbb{Z}^2,G)\to Rep(\mathbb{Z}^2,G)$ induces multiplication by the Dynkin index of $G$. More generally we show that if $G$ is simple and $Hom(\mathbb{Z}^2,G)_{1}\subseteq Hom(\mathbb{Z}^2,G)$ is the path--component of the trivial homomorphism, then $H_2(Hom(\mathbb{Z}^2,G)_{1};\mathbb{Z})$ is an extension of the Schur multiplier of $π_1(G)^2$ by $\mathbb{Z}$. We apply our computations to prove that if $B_{com}G_{1}$ is the classifying space for commutativity at the identity component, then $π_4(B_{com}G_{1})\cong \mathbb{Z}\oplus \mathbb{Z}$, and we construct examples of non-trivial transitionally commutative structures on the trivial principal $G$-bundle over the sphere $\mathbb{S}^{4}$.
In this paper we study the homotopy type of the partially ordered set of left cosets of abelian subgroups in an extraspecial $p$-group. We prove that the universal cover of its nerve is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of $r$-spheres where $2r \geq 4$ is the rank of its Frattini quotient. This determines the homotopy type of the universal cover of the classifying space of transitionally commutative bundles.
In general the processes of taking a homotopy inverse limit of a diagram of spectra and smashing spectra with a fixed space do not commute. In this paper we investigate under what additional assumptions these two processes do commute. In fact we deal with an equivariant generalization which involves spectra and smash products over the orbit category of a discrete group. Such a situation naturally occurs if one studies the equivariant homology theory associated to topological cyclic homology. The main theorem of this paper will play a role in the generalization of the results obtained by Boekst…
Let Y = Hom(Z^n, SU(2)) denote the space of commuting n-tuples in SU(2). We determine the homotopy type of the suspension of Y and compute the integral cohomology groups of Y for all positive integers n.
We describe the $C_2$-equivariant homotopy type of the space of commuting n-tuples in the stable unitary group in terms of Real K-theory. The result is used to give a complete calculation of the homotopy groups of the space of commuting n-tuples in the stable orthogonal group, as well as of the coefficient ring for commutative orthogonal K-theory.
We compute the fundamental group of the spaces of ordered commuting $n$-tuples of elements in the Lie groups SU(2), U(2) and SO(3). For SO(3) the computation of the mod-2 cohomology of the components of these spaces is also obtained.
Let $G$ be the classical group, and let Hom$(\mathbb{Z}^m,G)$ denote the space of commuting $m$-tuples in $G$. Baird proved that the cohomology of Hom$(\mathbb{Z}^m,G)$ is identified with a certain ring of invariants of the Weyl group of $G$. In this paper by using the result of Baird we give the cohomology ring of Hom$(\mathbb{Z}^2,G)$ for simple Lie group $G$ of rank 2.
In this note we study topological invariants of the spaces of homomorphisms Hom(π,G), where π is a finitely generated abelian group and G is a compact Lie group arising as an arbitrary finite product of the classical groups SU(r), U(q) and Sp(k).
Quillen showed how to describe the homotopy theory of simply-connected rational spaces in terms of differential graded Lie algebras. Here we survey a generalization of Quillen's results that describes the $v_n$-periodic localizations of homotopy theory (where rational corresponds to $n=0$) in terms of spectral Lie algebras. The latter form an extension of the theory of Lie algebras to the setting of stable homotopy theory. This is a chapter written for the Handbook of Homotopy Theory edited by Haynes Miller.
We construct a dg Lie model for the universal cover of the classifying space of the grouplike monoid of homotopy automorphisms of a space that fix a given subspace.
We compute the homotopy groups of the spaces of self maps of Lie groups of rank 2, SU(3), Sp(2), and G_2. We use the cell structures of these Lie groups and the standard methods of homotopy theory.
We construct Lie algebras of derivations (and identify their geometrical realization) whose Maurer-Cartan sets provide moduli spaces describing the classes of homotopy types of rational spaces sharing either the same homotopy Lie algebra, homology or cohomology.
The first aim of this paper is to study the $p$-local higher homotopy commutativity of Lie groups in the sense of Sugawara. The second aim is to apply this result to the $p$-local higher homotopy commutativity of gauge groups. Although the higher homotopy commutativity of Lie groups in the sense of Williams is already known, the higher homotopy commutativity in the sense of Sugawara is necessary for this application. The third aim is to resolve the $5$-local higher homotopy non-commutativity problem of the exceptional Lie group $\mathrm{G}_2$, which has been open for a long time.
Consider the space Hom(Z^n,G) of pairwise commuting n-tuples of elements in a compact Lie group G. This forms a real algebraic variety, which is generally singular. In this paper, we construct a desingularization of the generic component of Hom(Z^n,G), which allows us to derive formulas for its ordinary and equivariant cohomology in terms of the Lie algebra of a maximal torus in G and the action of the Weyl group. This is an application of a general theorem concerning G-spaces for which every element is fixed by a maximal torus.
Let A be a geometric arrangement such that codim(x) > 1 for every x in A. We prove that, if the complement space M(A) is rationally hyperbolic, then there exists an injective from a free Lie algebra L(u,v) to the homotopy Lie algebra of M(A).
A simply connected topological space X has homotopy Lie algebra $π_*(ΩX) \tensor \Q$. Following Quillen, there is a connected differential graded free Lie algebra (dgL) called a Lie model, which determines the rational homotopy type of X, and whose homology is isomorphic to the homotopy Lie algebra. We show that such a Lie model can be replaced with one that has a special property we call separated. The homology of a separated dgL has a particular form which lends itself to calculations.
We note that a recent result of the second author yields upper bounds for odd-primary homotopy exponents of compact simple Lie groups which are often quite close to the lower bounds obtained from v_1-periodic homotopy theory.
We calculate the higher homotopy groups of the Deligne-Getzler infinity-groupoid associated to a nilpotent L-infinity algebra. As an application, we present a new approach to the rational homotopy theory of mapping spaces.
The $p$-local homotopy types of gauge groups of principal $G$-bundles over $S^4$ are classified when $G$ is a compact connected exceptional Lie group without $p$-torsion in homology except for $(G,p)=(\mathrm{E}_7,5)$.
In this paper we study homological stability for spaces ${\rm Hom}(\mathbb{Z}^n,G)$ of pairwise commuting $n$-tuples in a Lie group $G$. We prove that for each $n\geqslant 1$, these spaces satisfy rational homological stability as $G$ ranges through any of the classical sequences of compact, connected Lie groups, or their complexifications. We prove similar results for rational equivariant homology, for character varieties, and for the infinite-dimensional analogues of these spaces, ${\rm Comm}(G)$ and ${\rm B_{com}} G$, introduced by Cohen-Stafa and Adem-Cohen-Torres-Giese respectively. In ad…
In this paper an algebraic model for unbased rational homotopy theory from the perspective of curved Lie algebras is constructed. As part of this construction a model structure for the category of pseudo-compact curved Lie algebras with curved morphisms will be introduced; one which is Quillen equivalent to a certain model structure of unital commutative differential graded algebras, thus extending the known Quillen equivalence of augmented algebras and differential graded Lie algebras.
Let M be a homogeneous space admitting a left translation by a connected Lie group G. The adjoint to the action gives rise to a map from G to the monoid of self-homotopy equivalences of M.The purpose of this paper is to investigate the injectivity of the homomorphism which is induced by the adjoint map on the rational homotopy. In particular, the visible degrees are determined explicitly for all the cases of simple Lie groups and their associated homogeneous spaces of rank one which are classified by Oniscik.
Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group, or more generally a path connected topological group of the homotopy type of a finite CW-complex, and let $X$ be a rational nilpotent $G$-space. In this paper we analyze the homotopy type of the homotopy fixed point set $X^{hG}$, and the natural injection $k\colon X^G\hookrightarrow X^{hG}$. We show that if $X$ is elliptic, that is, it has finite dimensional rational homotopy and cohomology, then each path component of $X^{hG}$ is also elliptic. We also give an explicit algebraic model of the inclusion $k$ based on which we can prove, for instance, tha…
In this note we show that the second homotopy group of $B(2,G)$, the classifying space for commutativity for a compact Lie group $G$, contains a direct summand isomorphic to $π_1(G)\oplusπ_1([G,G])$, where $[G,G]$ is the commutator subgroup of $G$. It follows from a similar statement for $E(2,G)$, the homotopy fiber of the canonical inclusion $B(2,G)\hookrightarrow BG$. As a consequence of our main result we obtain that if $E(2,G)$ is 2-connected, then $[G,G]$ is simply-connected. This last result completes how the higher connectivity of $E(2,G)$ resembles the higher connectivity of $[G,G]$ fo…
We give a new solution of the "homotopy periods" problem, as highlighted by Sullivan, which places explicit geometrically meaningful formulae first dating back to Whitehead in the context of Quillen's formalism for rational homotopy theory and Koszul-Moore duality. Geometrically, we show that homotopy groups are rationally given by "generalized linking/intersection invariants" of cochain data. Moreover, we give a method for determining when two maps from $S^n$ to $X$ are homotopic after allowing for multiplication by some integer. For applications, we investigate wedges of spheres and homogene…
We consider a homotopy theory obtained from that of pointed spaces by inverting the maps inducing isomorphisms in $v_n$-periodic homotopy groups. The case n = 0 corresponds to rational homotopy theory. In analogy with Quillen's results in the rational case, we prove that this $v_n$-periodic homotopy theory is equivalent to the homotopy theory of Lie algebras in T(n)-local spectra. We also compare it to the homotopy theory of commutative coalgebras in T(n)-local spectra, where it turns out there is only an equivalence up to a certain convergence issue of the Goodwillie tower of the identity.
Homotopy Lie groups, recently invented by W.G. Dwyer and C.W. Wilkerson, represent the culmination of a long evolution. The basic philosophy behind the process was formulated almost 25 years ago by Rector in his vision of a homotopy theoretic incarnation of Lie group theory. What was then technically impossible has now become feasible thanks to modern advances such as Miller's proof of the Sullivan conjecture and Lannes's division functors. Today, with Dwyer and Wilkerson's implementation of Rector's vision, the tantalizing classification theorem seems to be within grasp. Supported by motivati…
The semigroup of the homotopy classes of the self-homotopy maps of a finite complex which induce the trivial homomorphism on homotopy groups is nilpotent. We determine the nilpotency of these semigroups of compact Lie groups and finite Hopf spaces of rank 2. We also study the nilpotency of semigroups for Lie groups of higher rank. Especially, we give Lie groups with the nilpotency of the semigroups arbitrarily large.
We study the group of homotopy classes of self maps of compact Lie groups which induce the trivial homomorphism on homotopy groups. We completely determine the groups for SU(3) and Sp(2). We investigate these groups for simple Lie groups in the cases when Lie groups are p-regular or quasi p-regular. We apply our results to the groups of self homotopy equivalences.
The main purpose of this paper is to introduce a method to stabilize certain spaces of homomorphisms from finitely generated free abelian groups to a Lie group $G$, namely $Hom(\mathbb Z^n,G)$. We show that this stabilized space of homomorphisms decomposes after suspending once with summands which can be reassembled, in a sense to be made precise below, into the individual spaces $Hom(\mathbb Z^n,G)$ after suspending once. To prove this decomposition, a stable decomposition of an equivariant function space is also developed. One main result is that the topological space of all commuting elemen…
In a previous work, by extending the classical Quillen construction to the non-simply connected case, we have built a pair of adjoint functors, 'model' and 'realization', between the categories of simplicial sets and complete differential graded Lie algebras. This paper is a follow up of this work. We show that when X is a finite connected simplicial set, then the realization of the model of X is the disjoint union of the Bousfield-Kan completion of X with an external point. We also define a model category structure on the category of complete differential graded algebras making the two previo…
Given $X$ a finite nilpotent simplicial set, consider the classifying fibrations $$ X\to Baut_G^*(X)\to Baut_G(X),\qquad X\to Z\to Baut_π^*(X), $$ where $G$ and $π$ denote, respectively, subgroups of the free and pointed homotopy classes of free and pointed self homotopy equivalences of $X$ which act nilpotently on $H_*(X)$ and $π_*(X)$. We give algebraic models, in terms of complete differential graded Lie algebras (cdgl's), of the rational homotopy type of these fibrations. Explicitly, if $L$ is a cdgl model of $X$, there are connected sub cdgl's $Der^G L$ and $Der^π L$ of the Lie algebra $D…
Let $(G,H)=(SU(2n+1),SO(2n+1)),\,(SU(2n),Sp(n)),\,(SO(2n),SO(2n-1)),\,(E_6,F_4),\,(Spin(8),G_2)$, and let $p$ be any prime $\ge 5$ for $(G,H)=(E_6,F_4)$, any prime $p\ne 3$ for $(G,H)=(Spin(8),G_2)$, and any odd prime otherwise. The classical result of Harris on the relation between the homotopy groups of $G$ and $H$ is reinterpreted as a $p$-local homotopy equivalence $G\simeq_{(p)}H\times G/H$, which yields a projection $G_{(p)}\to H_{(p)}$. We show how much this projection preserves the higher homotopy associativity.
We describe explicit presentations of all stable and the first nonstable homotopy groups of the unitary groups. In particular, for each n >= 2 we supply n homotopic maps that each represent the (n-1)!-th power of a suitable generator of pi_2n(U(n)) = Z_{n!}. The product of these n commuting maps is the constant map to the identity matrix.
In this paper the space of almost commuting elements in a Lie group is studied through a homotopical point of view. In particular a stable splitting after one suspension is derived for these spaces and their quotients under conjugation. A complete description for the stable factors appearing in this splitting is provided for compact connected Lie groups of rank one.By using symmetric products, the colimits $\Rep(\Z^n, SU)$, $\Rep(\Z^n,U)$ and $\Rep(\Z^n, Sp)$ are explicitly described as finite products of Eilenberg-MacLane spaces.
We propose a construction of an analogue of the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel relative norm $N_{H}^{G}$ in the context of a positive dimensional compact Lie group $G$ and closed subgroup $H$. We explore expected properties of the construction. We show that in the case when $G$ is the circle group (the unit complex numbers), the proposed construction here agrees with the relative norm constructed by Angeltveit, Gerhardt, Lawson, and the authors using the cyclic bar construction. Our construction is based on a new perspective on equivariant factorization homology, using framings to convert from actions o…
We compute the 3-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups of the exceptional Lie group E7. Now E8 at the primes 3 and 5 is the only compact simple Lie group whose odd-primary v1-periodic homotopy groups remian to be computed. The main work is computing the unstable Novikov spectral sequence of ΩE7/Sp(2). Showing that this converges to v1-periodic homotopy groups requires recent work of Bousfield and Bendersky-Thompson.
We propose a notion of 1-homotopy for generalized maps. This notion generalizes those of natural transformation and ordinary homotopy for functors. The 1-homotopy type of a Lie groupoid is shown to be invariant under Morita equivalence. As an application we consider orbifolds as groupoids and study the notion of orbifold 1-homotopy type induced by a 1-homotopy between presentations of the orbifold maps.
This paper identifies the homotopy theories of topological stacks and orbispaces with unstable global homotopy theory. At the same time, we provide a new perspective by interpreting it as the homotopy theory of `spaces with an action of the universal compact Lie group'. The upshot is a novel way to construct and study genuine cohomology theories on stacks, orbifolds, and orbispaces, defined from stable global homotopy types represented by orthogonal spectra. The universal compact Lie group (which is neither compact nor a Lie group) is a well known object, namely the topological monoid $\mathca…
This is my attempt to rediscover how Dennis realized that he had discovered/invented $L_\infty$-algebras a.k.a. strongly homotopy Lie algebras before my colleagues and I defined them.
We prove that strongly homotopy algebras (such as $A_\infty$, $C_\infty$, sh Lie, $B_\infty$, $G_\infty$,...) are homotopically invariant in the category of chain complexes. An important consequence is a rigorous proof that `strongly homotopy structures transfer over chain homotopy equivalences.'
This belongs to a series of papers devoted to the study of the cohomology of classifying spaces of Lie groupoids. Our aim here is to introduce and study the notion of representation up to homotopy of Lie groupoids, the resulting derived category, and to show that the adjoint representation is well defined as a representation up to homotopy. As an application, we extend Bott's spectral sequence converging to the cohomology of classifying spaces from Lie groups to Lie groupoids.
In this article we study the homology of spaces ${\rm Hom}(\mathbb{Z}^n,G)$ of ordered pairwise commuting $n$-tuples in a Lie group $G$. We give an explicit formula for the Poincare series of these spaces in terms of invariants of the Weyl group of $G$. By work of Bergeron and Silberman, our results also apply to ${\rm Hom}(F_n/Γ_n^m,G)$, where the subgroups $Γ_n^m$ are the terms in the descending central series of the free group $F_n$. Finally, we show that there is a stable equivalence between the space ${\rm Comm}(G)$ studied by Cohen-Stafa and its nilpotent analogues.
We introduce and study the notion of representation up to homotopy of a Lie algebroid, paying special attention to examples. We use representations up to homotopy to define the adjoint representation of a Lie algebroid and show that the resulting cohomology controls the deformations of the structure. The Weil algebra of a Lie algebroid is defined and shown to coincide with Kalkman's BRST model for equivariant cohomology in the case of group actions.
Shulman's spatial type theory internalizes the modalities of Lawvere's axiomatic cohesion in a homotopy type theory, enabling many of the constructions from Schreiber's modal approach to differential cohomology to be carried out synthetically. In spatial type theory, every type carries a spatial cohesion among its points and every function is continuous with respect to this. But in mathematical practice, objects may be spatial in more than one way at the same time; for example, a simplicial space has both topological and simplicial structures. In this paper, we put forward a type theory with "…
Since Quillen proved his famous equivalences of homotopy categories in 1969, much work has been done towards classifying the rational homotopy types of simply connected topological places. The majority of this work has focused on rational homotopy types with the same cohomology algebra. The models in this case were differential graded algebras and acted similarly to differential forms. These models were then used together with some deformation theory to describe a moduli space for all rational homotopy types with a given cohomology algebra. Indeed, this theory has been very well developed. How…
We present a theory that produces several examples where the homotopy Lie algebra of a complex hyperplane arrangement is not finitely presented. We also present examples of hyperplane arrangements where the enveloping algebra of this Lie algebra has an irrational Hilbert series. This answers two questions of Denham and Suciu.
Let A be a graded-commutative, connected k-algebra generated in degree 1. The homotopy Lie algebra g_A is defined to be the Lie algebra of primitives of the Yoneda algebra, Ext_A(k,k). Under certain homological assumptions on A and its quadratic closure, we express g_A as a semi-direct product of the well-understood holonomy Lie algebra h_A with a certain h_A-module. This allows us to compute the homotopy Lie algebra associated to the cohomology ring of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, provided some combinatorial assumptions are satisfied. As an application, we give examples…
Using spaces of homomorphisms and the descending central series of the free groups, simplicial spaces are constructed for each integer q>1 and every topological group G, with realizations B(q,G) that filter the classifying space BG. In particular for q=2 this yields a single space B(2,G) assembled from all the n-tuples of commuting elements in G. Homotopy properties of the B(q,G) are considered for finite groups. Cohomology calculations are provided for compact Lie groups. The spaces B(2,G) are described in detail for transitively commutative groups.
A topological groupoid G is K-pointed, if it is equipped with a homomorphism from a topological group K to G. We describe the homotopy groups of such K-pointed topological groupoids and relate these groups to the ordinary homotopy groups in terms of a long exact sequence. As an application, we give an obstruction to presentability of proper regular Lie groupoids.
We utilise the theory of crossed simplicial groups to introduce a collection of local Quillen model structures on the category of simplicial presheaves with a compact planar Lie group action on a small Grothendieck site. As an application, we give a characterisation of equivariant cohomology theories on a site as derived mapping spaces in these model categories.
The main goal of this thesis is to develop the integration theory of curved homotopy Lie algebras. In the first chapter, we develop the operadic calculus needed: we encode non-necessarily conilpotent coalgebras with operads and introduce their dual notion of an algebra over a cooperad, which we call "absolute algebras". The first sections of this chapter are a state of the art, and the last three sections are made of original results. In the second chapter, we develop the new theory of curved operadic calculus, which allows us to encode curved types of algebras with curved operads. Finally, in…
