We propose a new method to generate magnetic skyrmions through spin-wave focusing in chiral ferromagnets.A lens is constructed to focus spin waves by a curved interface between two ferromagnetic thin films with different perpendicular magnetic anisotropies. Based on the principle of identical magnonic path length, we derive the lens contour that can be either elliptical or hyperbolical depending on the magnon refractive index. Micromagnetic simulations are performed to verify the theoretical design. It is found that under proper condition magnetic skyrmions emerge near the focus point of the lens where the spin-wave intensity has been significantly enhanced. A close investigation shows that a magnetic droplet first forms and then converts to the skyrmion accompanying with a change of topological charge. Phase diagram about the amplitude and duration-time of the exciting field for skyrmion generation is obtained. Our findings would be helpful for designing novel spintronic devices combining the advantages of skyrmionics and magnonics.
Magnetic skyrmions are quasiparticle configurations in a magnetic film that can act as information carrying bits for ultrasmall, all-electronic nonvolatile memory. The skyrmions can be nucleated and driven by spin-orbit torque from a current driven in a heavy metal underlayer. Along its gyrotropic path, a Magnus force can cause a skyrmion to be annihilated at the boundaries. By combining interfacial and bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMIs), for instance by using a B20 material on top of a heavy metal layer with high spin-orbit coupling, it is possible to engineer a hybrid skyrmion th…
We propose a method to generate magnetic skyrmions by focusing spin waves totally reflected by a curved film edge. Based on the principle of identical magnonic path length, we derive the edge contour that is parabolic and frequency-independent. Micromagnetic simulations are performed to verify our theoretical design. It is found that under proper conditions, magnetic droplet first emerges near the focal point where the spin-wave intensity has been significantly enhanced, and then converts to magnetic skyrmion accompanied by a change of the topological charge. The phase diagram about the amplit…
We study speed and skew deflection-angle dependence on skyrmion deformations of a tightly bound two-skyrmion state in a synthetic ferrimagnet. We condsider here, an in-plane uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy-term in order to induce lateral shape distortions and an overall size modulation of the skyrmions due to a reduction of the effective out-of-plane anisotropy, thus affecting the skyrmion speed, skew-deflection and inducing anisotropy in these quantities with respect to the driving current-angle. Because of frustrated dipolar interactions in a synthetic ferrimagnet, sizeable skyrmion d…
The interaction between the surface of a 3D topological insulator and a skyrmion / anti-skyrmion structure is studied in order to investigate the possibility of electron confinement due to skyrmion presence. Both hedgehog (Néel) and vortex (Bloch) skyrmions are considered. For the hedgehog skyrmion the in-plane components cannot be disregarded and their interaction with the surface state of the TI has to be taken into account. A semi-classical description of the skyrmion chiral angle is obtained using the variational principle. It is shown that both the hedgehog and the vortex skyrmion can ind…
We theoretically study the dynamics of ferrimagnetic skyrmions in inhomogeneous metallic films close to the angular momentum compensation point. In particular, it is shown that the line of the vanishing angular momentum can be utilized as a self-focusing racetrack for skyrmions. To that end, we begin by deriving the equations of motion for the dynamics of collinear ferrimagnets in the presence of a charge current. The obtained equations of motion reduce to those of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets at two special limits. In the collective coordinate approach, a skyrmion behaves as a massive ch…
We study current-driven skyrmion motion in uniaxial thin film antiferromagnets in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and in an external magnetic field. We phenomenologically include relaxation and current-induced torques due to both spin-orbit coupling and spatially inhomogeneous magnetic textures in the equation for the Néel vector of the antiferromagnet. Using the collective coordinate approach we apply the theory to a two-dimensional antiferromagnetic skyrmion and estimate the skyrmion velocity under an applied DC electric current.
Electron spin-momentum locking together with background magnetic textures can significantly alter the electron transport properties. We theoretically investigate the electron transport at the interface between a topological insulator and a magnetic insulator with magnetic skyrmions on the top. In contrast to the conventional topological Hall effect in normal metals, the skyrmions yield an additional contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity even in the absence of in-plane magnetic texture, arising from the phase factor characteristic to Dirac electrons acquired at skyrmion boundary.
Magnetic skyrmions are believed to be the promising candidate of information carriers in spintronics. However, the skyrmion Hall effect due to the nontrivial topology of skyrmions can induce a skyrmion accumulation or even annihilation at the edge of the devices, which hinders the real-world applications of skyrmions. In this work, we theoretically investigate the current-driven skyrmion motion on magnetic nanotubes which can be regarded as "edgeless" in the tangential direction. By performing micromagnetic simulations, we find that the skyrmion motion exhibits a helical trajectory on the nano…
Inevitable for the basic principles of skyrmion racetrack-like applications is not only their confined motion along one-dimensional channels but also their controlled creation and annihilation. Helical magnets have been suggested to naturally confine the motion of skyrmions along the tracks formed by the helices, which also allow for high-speed skyrmion motion. We propose a protocol to create topological magnetic structures in a helical background. We furthermore analyse the stability and current-driven motion of the skyrmions in a helical background with in-plane uniaxial anisotropy fixing th…
Topological spin textures can be found in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional nanostructures, which are of great importance to advanced spintronic applications. Here we report the current-induced skyrmion tube dynamics in three-dimensional synthetic antiferromagnetic (SyAF) bilayer and multilayer nanostructures. It is found that the SyAF skyrmion tube made of thinner sublayer skyrmions is more stable during its motion, which ensures that a higher speed of the skyrmion tube can be reached effectively at larger driving current. In the SyAF multilayer with a given total thickness, the curr…
Magnetic skyrmions are spin swirling solitonic defects that can play a major role in information technology. Their future in applications and devices hinges on their efficient manipulation and detection. Here, we explore from ab-initio their nature as magnetic inhomongeities in an otherwise unperturbed magnetic material, Fe layer covered by a thin Pd film and deposited on top of Ir(111) surface. The presence of skyrmions triggers scattering processes, from which Friedel oscillations emerge. The latter mediate interactions among skyrmions or between skyrmions and other potential surrounding def…
Exchange anisotropy provides a direction dependent mechanism for the stability of the skyrmion lattice phase in noncentrosymmetric bulk chiral magnets. Based on the Fourier representation of the skyrmion lattice, we explain the direction dependence of the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram for bulk MnSi through a phenomenological mean-field model incorporating exchange anisotropy. Through quantitative comparison with experimental results, we clarify that the stability of the skyrmion lattice phase in bulk MnSi is determined by a combined effect of negative exchange anisotropy and thermal…
We report the results of simulations of magnetic skyrmion stability in ultrathin magnetic multilayer nanodots with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction (DMI). We found that in presence of the lateral confinement the magnetostatic energy significantly influences the skyrmion stability and leads to stabilization of large radius skyrmion even at low values of the DMI strength, in addition to small radius skyrmion stabilized by DMI. In particular, stabilization of the skyrmion state with two different radii (bi-stability) is found in dipolarly-coupled (Pt/Co/Ir)$_{n}$ circular na…
Neél skyrmions originate from interfacial Dzyaloshinskii Moriya interaction (DMI). Recent studies have explored using ferromagnet to host Neél skyrmions for device applications. However, challenges remain to reduce the size of skyrmion to near 10 nm. Amorphous rare-earth-transitional-metal ferrimagnets are attractive alternative materials to obtain ultrasmall skyrmions at room temperature. Their intrinsic perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and tunable magnetization provides a favorable environment for skyrmion stability. In this work, we employ atomistic stochastic Landau-Liftshitz-Gilbert (LLG…
We investigate the propagation of magnetic skyrmions on elastically deformable geometries by employing imaginary time quantum field theory methods. We demonstrate that the Euclidean action of the problem carries information of the elements of the surface space metric, and develop a description of the skyrmion dynamics in terms of a set of collective coordinates. We reveal that novel curvature-driven effects emerge in geometries with non-constant curvature, which explicitly break the translational invariance of flat space. In particular, for a skyrmion stabilized by a curvilinear defect, an ine…
The nonlinear dynamic behavior of a magnetic skyrmion in circular nanodots was studied numerically by solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation with a classical spin model. We show that a skyrmion core reversal can be achieved within nanoseconds using a perpendicular oscillating magnetic field. Two symmetric switching processes that correspond to excitations of the breathing mode and the mixed mode (combination of the breathing mode and a radial spin-wave mode) are identified. For excitation of the breathing mode, the skyrmion core switches through nucleation of a new core from a transient …
We study the current-driven motion of metastable localized spin structures with various topological charges in a (Pt$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$)/Fe bilayer on a Pd(111) surface by combining atomistic spin model simulations with an approach based on the generalized Thiele equation. We demonstrate that besides a distinct dependence on the topological charge itself the dynamic response of skyrmionic structures with topological charges $\mathrm{Q} = -1$ and $\mathrm{Q}= 3$ to a spin-polarized current exhibits an orientation dependence. We further show that such an orientation dependence can be induced by app…
Electrons moving through a noncoplanar magnetic texture acquire a Berry phase, which can be described as an effective magnetic field. This effect is known as the topological Hall effect and has been observed in topological spin textures. Motivated by recent experimental realizations, here we study the Hall effect in a nontopological magnetic texture known as a target skyrmion. We start from a simplified semiclassical picture and show that the Hall signal is a nonmonotonic function of both the electronic energy and target skyrmion radius. That observation carries over to the fully quantum mecha…
We theoretically study the current-induced dynamics of a domain wall in a ferromagnetic nanotube by developing a theory for the orbital angular momentum of a domain wall and the current-induced torque on it. Specifically, a domain wall with nontrivial magnetization winding along the circumference is shown to possess finite orbital angular momentum, which is proportional to the product of its Skyrmion charge and position, and the current is shown to exert a torque changing the orbital angular momentum of the domain wall and thereby drives it. The current-induced torque is interpreted as the tra…
Magnetic skyrmions are textures behaving as quasiparticles which are topologically different from other states. Their discovery in systems with broken inversion symmetry sparked the search for materials containing such magnetic phase at room temperature. Their topological properties combined with the chirality-related spin-orbit torques make them interesting objects to control the magnetization at nanoscale. Here we show that a pair of coupled skyrmions with the same topological charge and opposite chiralities can be stabilized in a symmetric magnetic bilayer system by combining Dzyaloshinskii…
We demonstrate that the nontrivial magnetic texture of antiferromagnetic skyrmions (AFM-Sks) promotes a non-vanishing topological spin Hall effect (TSHE) on the flowing electrons. This results in a substantial enhancement of the non-adiabatic torque and hence improves the skyrmion mobility. This non-adiabatic torque increases when decreasing the skyrmion size, and therefore scaling down results in a much higher torque efficiency. In clean AFM-Sks, we find a significant boost of the TSHE close to van Hove singularity. Interestingly, this effect is enhanced away from the band gap in the presence…
We study the Thiele equation for current-induced motion in a skyrmion lattice through two soluble models of the pinning potential. Comprised by a Magnus term, a dissipative term and a pinning force, Thiele's equation resembles Newton's law but in virtue of the topological character of the first two, it differs significantly from Newtonian mechanics and because the Magnus force is dominant, unlike its mechanical counterpart, the Coriolis force, skyrmion trajectories do not necessarily have mechanical counterparts. This is important if we are to understand skykrmion dynamics and tap into its pot…
We show how a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can be generated in an ultrathin metal film from the induced internal electric field created by an ultrashort electromagnetic pulse. This interaction does not require structural inversion-symmetry breaking, and its amplitude can be tuned depending on the amplitude of the field. We perform first-principles calculations to estimate the strength of the field-induced magnetoelectric coupling for ferromagnetic Fe, Co, and Ni, and antiferromagnetic Mn, as well as FePt alloys. Last, using atomistic simulations, we demonstrate how an isolated antiferroma…
Twisted skyrmions, whose helicity angles are different from that of Bloch skyrmions and Néel skyrmions, have already been demonstrated in experiments recently. In this work, we first contrast the magnetic structure and origin of the twisted skyrmion with other three types of skyrmion including Bloch skyrmion, Néel skyrmion and antiskyrmion. Following, we investigate the dynamics of twisted skyrmions driven by the spin transfer toque (STT) and the spin Hall effect (SHE) by using micromagnetic simulations. It is found that the spin Hall angle of the twisted skyrmion is related to the dissipative…
Using a particle based model, we investigate the skyrmion dynamical behavior in a channel where the upper wall contains divots of one depth and the lower wall contains divots of a different depth. Under an applied driving force, skyrmions in the channels move with a finite skyrmion Hall angle that deflects them toward the upper wall for $-x$ direction driving and the lower wall for $+x$ direction driving. When the upper divots have zero height, the skyrmions are deflected against the flat upper wall for $-x$ direction driving and the skyrmion velocity depends linearly on the drive. For $+x$ di…
We theoretically study the dynamics of skyrmion crystals in electrically-insulating chiral magnets subjected to current-induced spin torques by adjacent metallic layers. We develop an elasticity theory that accounts for the gyrotropic force engendered by the non-trivial topology of the spin texture, tensions at the boundaries due to the exchange of linear and spin angular momentum with the metallic reservoirs, and dissipation in the bulk of the film. A steady translation of the skyrmion crystal is triggered by the current-induced tensions and subsequently sustained by dissipative forces, gener…
Magnetic phase transitions are a test bed for exploring the physics of non-equilibrium phenomena in condensed matter, which become even more complex when topological constraints are involved. In particular, the investigation of skyrmions and skyrmion lattices offers insight into fundamental processes of topological-charge creation and annihilation upon changing the magnetic state. Nonetheless, the exact physical mechanisms behind these phase transitions remain unresolved. Here, we have systematically compared ultra-thin films with isotropic and anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (D…
In this work, the current-induced inertial effects on skyrmions hosted in ferromagnetic systems are studied. {When the dynamics is considered beyond the particle-like description, magnetic skyrmions can deform due to a self-induced field. We perform Monte Carlo simulations to characterize the deformation of the skyrmion during its movement}. In the low-velocity regime, the deformation in the skyrmion shape is quantified by an effective inertial mass, which is related to the dissipative force. When skyrmions move faster, the large self-induced deformation triggers topological transitions. The t…
Curvature effects are important for a proper description of the properties of magnetic systems. In this paper the exchange and dipolar energy of vortices on a paraboloidal shell is studied. Using analytical calculations it is shown that the in-plane component of vortices has larger energy on a paraboloidal shell than in a planar disk with same thickness. On the other hand, the dipolar energy associated to the vortex core diminishes if the vortex core is on a paraboloidal surface. This reduction in the dipolar energy may cause a vortex pinning mechanism by a paraboloidal shaped defect in a plan…
Novel types of barrel-shaped chiral skyrmions can exist as isolated topological defects or as bound states in magnetic nanolayers with intrinsic and surface/interface induced chirality. The equilibrium parameters of chiral modulations calculated as functions of applied fields, layer thicknesses, and values of surface and volume uniaxial anisotropies allow to find optimal parameters for skyrmionic states in magnetic nanolayers. Our findings also show that in cholesteric cells with homeotropic anchoring smooth skyrmionic textures can be induced as an intriguing alternative to common disclination…
The anomalous Hall effect is caused by magnetic textures such as skyrmions. We derive an analytical formula of the Hall conductivity on the surface of a topological insulator up to third order in magnetization, $\boldsymbol{M}(\boldsymbol{x})$, based on a perturbative approach. We identify the magnetic textures that contribute to the Hall conductivity up to third order in magnetization and second order in spatial differentiation. We treat magnetization as a perturbation to calculate the Hall conductivity for each magnetic texture based on the linear response theory. Furthermore, we estimate th…
In this paper we investigate a magnetic racetrack consisting of a junction of three materials with different properties. Indeed, this magnetic system is composed by two distinct regions (racetracks) connected by a thin interface: the first region (termed sector $1$) has isotropic in-plane magnetic chirality and supports skyrmion ($S$) excitations while the second (sector $3$) has anisotropic chirality and consequently supports antiskyrmions ($A$). The interface, which would be a third region (sector $2$, connecting sectors $1$ and $3$) located in the central part of the racetrack, is an easy-a…
We revisit a theory of skyrmion transport in ferromagnets. On a basis of an effective U(1) gauge theory for spin-chirality fluctuations in double-exchange ferromagnets, we derive an expression for the velocity of a skyrmion core driven by the dc electric field. We find that mutual feedback effects between conduction electrons and localized spins give rise to Chern-Simons terms, suggesting a dissipationless mechanism for the skyrmion Hall current. A conventional description of the current-induced skyrmion motion, appearing through the spin transfer torque and scattering events, is reproduced in…
Magnetic skyrmionium is a skyrmion-like spin texture with nanoscale size and high mobility. It is a topologically trivial but dynamically stable structure, which can be used as a non-volatile information carrier for next-generation spintronic storage and computing devices. Here, we study the dynamics of a skyrmionium driven by the spin torque in a ferrimagnetic nanotrack. It is found that the direction of motion is jointly determined by the internal configuration of a skyrmionium and the spin polarization vector. Besides, the deformation of a skyrmionium induced by the intrinsic skyrmion Hall …
We study how impurities influence the current-induced dynamics of magnetic Skyrmions moving in a racetrack geometry. For this, we solve numerically the generalized Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation extended by the current-induced spin transfer torque. In particular, we investigate two classes of impurities, non-conducting and magnetic impurities. The former are magnetically rigid objects and yield to an inhomogeneous current density over the racetrack which we determine separately by solving the fundamental electrostatic equations. In contrast, magnetic impurities leave the applied current dens…
When magnetic skyrmions are moved via currents, they do not strictly travel along the path of the current, instead their motion also gains a transverse component. This so-called skyrmion Hall effect can be detrimental in potential skyrmion devices because it drives skyrmions towards the edge of their hosting material where they face potential annihilation. Here we experimentally modify a skyrmion model system - an atomic Pd/Fe bilayer on Ir(111) - by decorating the film edge with ferromagnetic Co/Fe patches. Employing spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate that this ferro…
We consider a superconductor proximity coupled to a two-dimensional ferromagnetic film with a skyrmion texture. Using the T-matrix calculations and numerical modeling we calculate the spin-polarized local density of states in the superconductor in the vicinity of the skyrmion. We predict the skyrmion bound states (SBS) that are induced in the superconductor, similar to the well-known Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states. The SBS wavefunctions have spatial power law decay. Presence of the SBS suggests the mechanism by which superconductivity could facilitate an effective long-range interaction between…
Theory of interference-induced quantum corrections to conductivity is developed for two dimensional systems with chiral spin textures including skyrmions. The effect of exchange interaction between electrons and spin textures on weak localization of electronic waves is studied. The spin dephasing rates are calculated as functions of the spin texture size. The anomalous magnetoresistance is shown to be governed by the size and magnetization spatial distribution of the spin textures. The effect of average magnetization-induced spin splitting on weak localization is analyzed. The sign-alternating…
Magnetic skyrmions, vortex-like swirling spin structures with quantized topological number, observed in chiral magnets, are appealing for potential applications in spintronics because it is possible to control their motion with ultralow current density. In order to realise skyrmion-based spintronic devices, it is essential to understand the skyrmion motions in confined geometries. Here we show by micromagnetic simulations that the current-induced motion of skyrmions in the presence of geometrical boundaries is very different from that in an infinite plane. In a channel with finite width, the t…
We show that a temperature gradient induces an ac electric current in multiferroic insulators when the sample is embedded in a circuit. We also show that a thermal gradient can be used to move magnetic skyrmions in insulating chiral magnets: the induced magnon flow from the hot to the cold region drives the skyrmions in the opposite direction via a magnonic spin transfer torque. Both results are combined to compute the effect of skyrmion motion on the ac current generation and demonstrate that skyrmions in insulators are a promising route for spin caloritronics applications.
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale windings of the spin configuration that hold great promise for technology due to their topology-related properties and extremely reduced sizes. After the recent observation at room temperature of sub-100 nm skyrmions stabilized by interfacial chiral interaction in magnetic multilayers, several pending questions remain to be solved, notably about the means to nucleate individual compact skyrmions or the exact nature of their motion. In this study, a method leading to the formation of magnetic skyrmions in a micrometer-sized nanotrack using homogeneous current in…
We theoretically study the interaction of an isolated bimeron skyrmion in quasi-two-dimensional easy-plane magnets with a surrounding spin superfluid associated with spontaneously broken U(1) spin-rotational symmetry, revealing that skyrmion energy depends on the local spin current flowing in its background. The finding leads us to propose to manipulate a skyrmion energy landscape via a spin supercurrent, which can be controlled non-locally by varying the magnitudes of spin-current injection and ejection through the boundaries. Two exemplary cases are discussed: a steady-state motion of a skyr…
We demonstrate room-temperature stabilization of dipolar magnetic skyrmions with diameters in the range of $100$ nm in a single ultrathin layer of the Heusler alloy Co$_2$FeAl (CFA) under moderate magnetic fields. Current-induced skyrmion dynamics in microwires is studied with a scanning Nitrogen-Vacancy magnetometer operating in the photoluminescence quenching mode. We first demonstrate skyrmion nucleation by spin-orbit torque and show that its efficiency can be significantly improved using tilted magnetic fields, an effect which is not specific to Heusler alloys and could be advantageous for…
In s-wave systems, it has been theoretically shown that a ferromagnetic film hosting a skyrmion can induce a bound state embedded in the opposite-spin continuum. In this work, we consider a case of skyrmion-induced state in a p-wave superconductor. We find that the skyrmion induces a bound state that generally resides \emph{within} the spectral gap and is isolated from all other states, in contrast to the case of conventional superconductors. To this end, we derive an approximate expression for the $T$-matrix, through which we calculate the spin-polarized local density of states which is obser…
We study azimuthal spin-wave (SW) excitations in a circular ferromagnetic nanodot in different inhomogeneous, topologically non-trivial magnetization states, specifically, vortex, Bloch-type skyrmion and Néel-type skyrmion states. Continuous mapping of the SW spectrum between these states is realized with gradual change of the out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction (DMI). Our study shows lifting of the SW frequencies degeneracy and change in systematics of the frequency levels. The change is induced by a geometrical Berry phase, that is present for the …
Chiral spin textures are fundamentally interesting, with promise for device applications. Stabilizing chirality is conventionally achieved by introducing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in asymmetric multilayers where the thickness of each layer is at least a few monolayers. Here we report an ultrasensitive chirality switching in (Ni/Co)n multilayer induced by capping with only 0.22 monolayer of Pd. Using spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy, we monitor the gradual evolution of domain walls from left-handed to right-handed Neel walls and quantify the DMI induced by the Pd capp…
Magnetization dynamics driven by an electric field could provide long-term benefits to information technologies because of its ultralow power consumption. Meanwhile, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in interfacially asymmetric multilayers consisting of ferromagnetic and heavy-metal layers can stabilize topological spin textures, such as chiral domain walls, skyrmions, and skyrmion bubbles. These topological spin textures can be controlled by an electric field, and hold promise for building advanced spintronic devices. Here, we present an experimental and numerical study on the electric fi…
The dynamics of antiferromagnets is a current hot topic in condensed matter physics and spintronics. However, the dynamics of insulating antiferromagnets cannot be excited by an electric current, which is a method usually used to manipulate ferromagnetic metals. Here, we propose to use the voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy gradient as an excitation source to manipulate insulating antiferromagnetic textures. We analytically and numerically study the dynamics of an antiferromagnetic skyrmion driven by a magnetic anisotropy gradient. Our analytical calculations demonstrate that such a magnet…
