Magnetic skyrmions are spin swirling solitonic defects that can play a major role in information technology. Their future in applications and devices hinges on their efficient manipulation and detection. Here, we explore from ab-initio their nature as magnetic inhomongeities in an otherwise unperturbed magnetic material, Fe layer covered by a thin Pd film and deposited on top of Ir(111) surface. The presence of skyrmions triggers scattering processes, from which Friedel oscillations emerge. The latter mediate interactions among skyrmions or between skyrmions and other potential surrounding defects. In contrast to their wavelengths, the amplitude of the oscillations depends strongly on the size of the skyrmion. The analogy with the scattering-off atomic defects enables the assignment of an effective scattering potential and a phase shift to the skyrmionic particles, which can be useful to predict their behavior on the basis of simple scattering frameworks. The induced charge ripples can be utilized for a noninvasive all-electrical detection of skyrmions located on a surface or even if buried a few nanometers away from the detecting electrode.
The theoretical study considers chiral spin texture induced in a 2D electron gas (2DEG) by magnetic skyrmions. We calculate the electron gas spin density as a linear response to the exchange interaction between the 2DEG and the magnetization field of a magnetic skyrmion. Two physically distinct regimes occur. When the size of the skyrmion is larger than the inverse Fermi wavevector $k_F^{-1}$, the spin density response follows the magnetization profile of the skyrmion. In the opposite case of a small skyrmion the emerging spin structure of 2DEG has a characteristic size of $k_F^{-1}$ and the r…
How to detect the skyrmion position is a crucial problem in future skyrmionics since it corresponds to the reading process of information. We propose a method to detect the skyrmion position purely electrically by measuring the Hall conductance in a constricted geometry. The Hall conductance becomes maximum when a skyrmion is at the lead position. It is possible to detect the skyrmion position even at room temperature. We find an optimized width of the sample determined by the skyrmion radius. We also investigate the effects of elastic and inelastic scatterings, and finite temperature. We find…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected whirling spin textures that can be stabilized in magnetic materials in which a chiral interaction is present. Their limited size together with their robustness against the external perturbations promote them as the ultimate magnetic storage bit in a novel generation of memory and logic devices. Despite many examples of the signature of magnetic skyrmions in the electrical signal, only low temperature measurements, mainly in magnetic materials with B20 crystal structure, have demonstrated the skyrmions contribution to the electrical transport prope…
We study a graphene Hall probe located on top of a magnetic surface as a detector of skyrmions, using as working principle the anomalous Hall effect produced by the exchange interaction of the graphene electrons with the non-coplanar magnetization of the skyrmion. We study the magnitude of the effect as a function of the exchange interaction, skyrmion size and device dimensions. Our calculations for multiterminal graphene nanodevices, working in the ballistic regime, indicate that for realistic exchange interactions a single skyrmion would give Hall voltages well within reach of the experiment…
We theoretically investigated a method to detect a single skyrmion in a magnetic tunneling junction (MTJ) geometry. Using the tunneling Hamiltonian approach, we calculated the tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio of the skyrmion-ferromagnet bilayer system. We show the TMR ratio is determined sorely by the spin profile of the skyrmion and geometrical factor of the device, if only the system is reasonably clean such that the spectral broadening is smaller than the exchange coupling between the local and the itinerant magnetic moment. The TMR ratio in that case can amount to $30\%$ or higher w…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically stable whirlpool-like spin textures that offer great promise as information carriers for future ultra-dense memory and logic devices1-4. To enable such applications, particular attention has been focused on the skyrmions properties in highly confined geometry such as one dimensional nanowires5-8. Hitherto it is still experimentally unclear what happens when the width of the nanowire is comparable to that of a single skyrmion. Here we report the experimental demonstration of such scheme, where magnetic field-driven skyrmion cluster (SC) states with small num…
In our proof-of-principle study we examine the influence of skyrmions on magnetoresistive transport. In particular, we show that magnetic tunnel junctions are a technologically appealing and promising way for electrical detection of non-collinear magnetic structures. The calculated effect is shown to originate from scattering between different k-states and cannot be identified through densities of states alone. Our results suggest that the detection efficiency strongly depends on the utilized materials.
Magnetic skyrmions are stable nanosized spin structures that can be displaced at low electrical current densities. Because of these properties, they have been proposed as building blocks of future electronic devices with unprecedentedly high information density and low energy consumption. The electrical detection of skyrmions via the Topological Hall Effect (THE), has so far been demonstrated only at cryogenic temperatures. Here, we report the observation of a skyrmion Topological Hall Effect near room temperature (276 K) in a mesoscopic lamella of FeGe. This region unambiguously coincides wit…
A magnetic skyrmionium (also called 2$π$-skyrmion) can be understood as a skyrmion - a topologically non-trivial magnetic whirl - which is situated in the center of a second skyrmion with reversed magnetization. Here, we propose a new optoelectrical writing and deleting mechanism for skyrmioniums in thin films, as well as a reading mechanism based on the topological Hall voltage. Furthermore, we point out advantages for utilizing skyrmioniums as carriers of information in comparison to skyrmions with respect to the current-driven motion. We simulate all four constituents of an operating skyrmi…
We theoretically study equilibrium and dynamic properties of nanosized magnetic skyrmions in thin magnetic films with broken inversion symmetry, where electric field couples to magnetization via spin-orbit coupling. Based on a symmetry-based phenomenology and micromagnetic simulations we show that this electric-field coupling, via renormalizing the micromagnetic energy, modifies the equilibrium properties of the skyrmion. This change, in turn, results in a significant alteration of the current-induced skyrmion motion. Particularly, speed and direction of the skyrmion can be manipulated by desi…
Magnetic skyrmions are localised non-collinear spin textures with high potential for future spintronic applications. Skyrmion phases have been discovered in a number of materials and a focus of current research is the preparation, detection, and manipulation of individual skyrmions for an implementation in devices. Local experimental characterization of skyrmions has been performed by, e.g., Lorentz microscopy or atomic-scale tunnel magnetoresistance measurements using spin-polarised scanning tunneling microscopy. Here, we report on a drastic change of the differential tunnel conductance for m…
The skyrmions generated by frustration in centrosymmetric structures host extra internal degrees of freedom: vorticity and helicity, resulting in distinctive properties and potential functionality, which are not shared by the skyrmions stemming from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric structures. The present work indicates that the magnetism-driven electric polarization carried by skyrmions provides a direct handle for tuning helicity. Especially for the in-plane magnetized skyrmions, the helicity can be continuously rotated and exactly picked by applying an external el…
We study the high-temperature phase diagram of the chiral magnetic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ by measuring the spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in a thin Pt electrode. We find distinct changes in the phase and amplitude of the SMR signal at critical lines separating different magnetic phases of bulk Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. The skyrmion lattice state appears as a strong dip in the SMR phase. A strong enhancement of the SMR amplitude is observed in the conical spiral state, which we explain by an additional symmetry-allowed contribution to the SMR present in non-collinear magnets. We demonstrate that the…
Writing, erasing and computing are three fundamental operations required by any working electronic devices. Magnetic skyrmions could be basic bits in promising in emerging topological spintronic devices. In particular, skyrmions in chiral magnets have outstanding properties like compact texture, uniform size and high mobility. However, creating, deleting and driving isolated skyrmions, as prototypes of aforementioned basic operations, have been grand challenge in chiral magnets ever since the discovery of skyrmions, and achieving all these three operations in a single device is highly desirabl…
Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers in non-volatile memory and logic devices. While room-temperature magnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation were recently demonstrated, the stray field resulting from their finite magnetization as well as their topological charge limit their minimum size and reliable motion in tracks. Antiferromagnetic (AF) skyrmions allow these limitations to be lifted owing to their vanishing magnetization and net zero topological charge, promising room-temperature, ultrasmall skyrmions, …
Electrons mediate many of the interactions between atoms in a solid. Their propagation in a material determines its thermal, electrical, optical, magnetic and transport properties. Therefore, the constant energy contours characterizing the electrons, in particular the Fermi surface, have a prime impact on the behavior of materials. If anisotropic, the contours induce strong directional dependence at the nanoscale in the Friedel oscillations surrounding impurities. Here we report on giant anisotropic charge density oscillations focused along specific directions with strong spin-filtering after …
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected spin textures that exhibit many fascinating features. As compared to the well-studied cryogenic Bloch skyrmions in bulk materials, we focus on the room-temperature Néel skyrmions in thin-film systems with an interfacial broken inversion symmetry in this article. Specifically, we show the stabilization, the creation, and the implementation of Néel skyrmions that are enabled by the electrical current-induced spin-orbit torques. Towards the nanoscale Néel skyrmions, we further discuss the challenges from both material optimization and imaging charact…
Recent progress in all-electrical nucleation, detection and manipulation of magnetic skyrmions has unlocked the tremendous potential of skyrmion-based spintronic devices. Here, we show via micromagnetic simulations that the stable magnetic oscillations of STNO radiate spin waves (SWs) that can be scattered in the presence of skyrmions in the near vicinity. Interference between SWs emitted by the STNO and SWs scattered by the skyrmion gives rise to interesting dynamics that leads to amplification or attenuation of STNO's magnetic oscillations. In the presence of strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya int…
We consider a magnetic skyrmion adiabatically driven by a spin-polarized electrical current periodic in both space and time and asymmetric in space, and also subject to a random magnetic field representing the thermal fluctuations. We show that when the random magnetic field is low enough, while the time variation of the driving current is slow enough, the skyrmion flow is an integer multiply of the ratio between the space and time periods, the integer being a topological invariant called Chern number. This result is also demonstrated by numerically solving the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbe…
Magnetic skyrmions hold promise for spintronic devices. To explore the dynamical properties of skyrmions in devices, a nanoscale method to image spin textures in response to a stimulus is essential. Here, we apply a technique for operando electrical current pulsing of chiral magnetic devices in a Lorentz transmission electron microscope. In ferromagnetic multilayers with interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), we study the creation and annihilation of skyrmions localized by point-like pinning sites due to defects. Using a combination of experimental and micromagnetic techniques, w…
A spin-polarized current in a nanocontact to a magnetic film can create collective magnetic oscillations by compensating the magnetic damping. In particular, in materials with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, droplet solitons have been observed a self-localized excitation consisting of partially reversed magnetization that precesses coherently in the nanocontact region. It is also possible to generate topological droplet solitons, known as \emph{dynamical skyrmions}. Here we study the conditions that promote either droplet or dynamical skyrmion formation and describe their stability in magnetic f…
The viability of past, current and future devices for information technology hinges on their sensitivity to the presence of impurities. The latter can lead to resistivity anomalies, the so-called Kondo effect, reshape extrinsically Hall effects or reduce the efficiency of magnetoresistance effects essential in spintronics. Here we demonstrate that atomic defects enable highly efficient all-electrical detection of spin-swirling textures, in particular magnetic skyrmions, which are promising bits candidates in future spintronics devices. Impurities amplify the bare transport signal and can alter…
Magnetic skyrmions are knot-like quasiparticles. They are candidates for non-volatile data storage in which information is moved between fixed read and write terminals. Read-out operation of skyrmion-based spintronic devices will rely upon electrical detection of a single magnetic skyrmion within a nanostructure. Here, we present Pt/Co/Ir nanodiscs which support skyrmions at room temperature. We measured the Hall resistivity whilst simultaneously imaging the spin texture using magnetic scanning transmission x-ray microscopy (STXM). The Hall resistivity is correlated to both the presence and si…
Magnetic skyrmions are topologically non-trivial nanoscale objects. Their topology, which originates in their chiral domain wall winding, governs their unique response to a motion-inducing force. When subjected to an electrical current, the chiral winding of the spin texture leads to a deflection of the skyrmion trajectory, characterized by an angle with respect to the applied force direction. This skyrmion Hall angle was believed to be skyrmion diameter-dependent. In contrast, our experimental study finds that within the plastic flow regime the skyrmion Hall angle is diameter-independent. At …
Controllable writing and deleting of nanoscale magnetic skyrmions are key requirements for their use as information carriers for next-generation memory and computing technologies. While several schemes have been proposed, they require complex fabrication techniques or precisely tailored electrical inputs, which limits their long-term scalability. Here we demonstrate an alternative approach for writing and deleting skyrmions using conventional electrical pulses within a simple, two-terminal wire geometry. X-ray microscopy experiments and micromagnetic simulations establish the observed skyrmion…
Thin-film sub-5 nm magnetic skyrmions constitute an ultimate scaling alternative for future digital data storage. Skyrmions are robust non-collinear spin-textures that can be moved and manipulated by small electrical currents. We show here an innovative technique to detect isolated nanoskyrmions with a current-perpendicular-to-plane geometry, which has immediate implications for device concepts. We explore the physics behind such a mechanism by studying the atomistic electronic structure of the magnetic quasiparticles. We investigate how the isolated skyrmion local-density-of-states which tunn…
We present a theory of magnetoelectric magnon-photon coupling in cavities hosting noncentrosymmetric magnets. Analogously to nonreciprocal phenomena in multiferroics, the magnetoelectric coupling is time-reversal and inversion asymmetric. This asymmetry establishes a means for exceptional tunability of magnon-photon coupling, which can be switched on and off by reversing the magnetization direction. Taking the multiferroic skyrmion-host Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ with ultralow magnetic damping as an example, we reveal the electrical activity of skyrmion eigenmodes and propose it for magnon-photon splittin…
This paper reports on a theoretical proposal for electrical creation of magnetic skyrmions on a thin-film specimen of a multiferroic chiral magnet by local application of an electric field, instead of an electric current, via an electrode tip. This method can be traced back to the mutual coupling between skyrmion spins and the electric polarizations in multiferroics, and represents a unique technique for use in potential skyrmion-based memory devices without Joule-heating losses.
Electronic band structures dictate the mechanical, optical and electrical properties of crystalline solids. Their experimental determination is therefore of crucial importance for technological applications. While the spectral distribution in energy bands is routinely measured by various techniques, it is more difficult to access the topological properties of band structures such as the Berry phase γ. It is usually thought that measuring the Berry phase requires applying external electromagnetic forces because these allow realizing the adiabatic transport on closed trajectories along which qua…

Magnetic skyrmion, vortex-like swirling topologically stable spin configurations, is appealing as information carrier for future nanoelectronics, owing to the stability, small size and extremely low driving current density. One of the most promising applications of skyrmion is to build racetrack memory (RM). Compared to domain wall-based RM (DW-RM), skyrmion-based RM (Sky-RM) possesses quite a few benefits in terms of energy, density and speed etc. Until now, the fundamental behaviors, including nucleation/annihilation, motion and detection of skyrmion have been intensively investigated. Howev…
Magnetic skyrmions are promising candidates for logic-in-memory applications, intrinsically merging high density non-volatile data storage with computing capabilities, owing to their nanoscale size, fast motion, and mutual repulsions. However, concepts proposed so far suffer from reliability issues as well as inefficient conversion of magnetic information to electrical signals. In this paper, we propose a logic-in-memory device which exploits skyrmion confinement and channeling using anisotropy energy barriers to achieve reliable data storage and synchronous shift in racetracks combined with c…
Magnetic skyrmions are localized particle-like nontrivial swirls that are promising in building high-performance topological spintronic devices. Here, we report combined real-space magnetic imaging and anisotropic magnetoresistance studies on dipolar skyrmions. A single skyrmion chain and single skyrmion are observed using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy imaging. Meanwhile, the field, helicity, and skyrmion count dependence of anisotropic magnetoresistance of the Fe3Sn2 na…
We theoretically study the dynamics of skyrmion crystals in electrically-insulating chiral magnets subjected to current-induced spin torques by adjacent metallic layers. We develop an elasticity theory that accounts for the gyrotropic force engendered by the non-trivial topology of the spin texture, tensions at the boundaries due to the exchange of linear and spin angular momentum with the metallic reservoirs, and dissipation in the bulk of the film. A steady translation of the skyrmion crystal is triggered by the current-induced tensions and subsequently sustained by dissipative forces, gener…
Recent years have witnessed significant progresses in realizing skyrmions in chiral magnets1-4 and asymmetric magnetic multilayers5-13, as well as their electrical manipulation2,7,8,10. Equally important, thermal generation, manipulation and detection of skyrmions can be exploited for prototypical new architecture with integrated computation14 and energy harvesting15. It has yet to verify if skyrmions can be purely generated by heating16,17, and if their resultant direction of motion driven by temperature gradients follows the diffusion or, oppositely, the magnonic spin torque17-21. Here, we a…
Magnetic skyrmions are nanoscale whirls of magnetism that can be propagated with electrical currents. The repulsion between skyrmions inspires their use for reversible computing based on the elastic billiard ball collisions proposed for conservative logic in 1982. Here we evaluate the logical and physical reversibility of this skyrmion logic paradigm, as well as the limitations that must be addressed before dissipation-free computation can be realized.
We report spin-current generation related with skyrmion dynamics resonantly excited by a microwave in a helimagnetic insulator $\mathrm{Cu_2OSeO_3}$. A Pt layer was fabricated on $\mathrm{Cu_2OSeO_3}$ and voltage in the Pt layer was measured upon magnetic resonance of $\mathrm{Cu_2OSeO_3}$ to electrically detect injected spin currents via the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in Pt. We found that ISHE-induced electromotive forces appear in the skyrmion phase of $\mathrm{Cu_2OSeO_3}$ as well as in the ferrimagnetic phase, which shows that magnetic skyrmions can contribute to the spin pumping effe…
Symmetry breaking together with strong spin-orbit interaction give rise to many exciting phenomena within condensed matter physics. A recent example is the existence of chiral spin textures, which are observed in magnetic systems lacking inversion symmetry. These chiral spin textures, including domain walls and magnetic skyrmions, are both fundamentally interesting and technologically promising. For example, they can be driven very efficiently by electrical currents, and exhibit many new physical properties determined by their real-space topological characteristics. Depending on the details of…
An ideal layered $\hat{x}$-polarized antiferromagnet (AFM) between two antialigned $\pm \hat{z}$ polarized ferromagnetic (FM) contacts transmits no current due to a $π$ phase difference of the matrix elements coupling the spin degenerate states to the two FM contacts. The ratio of the two matrix elements coupling the two spin degenerate $\hat{x}$ AFM states to a $\hat{z}$ FM contact is determined by the exchange energy and the eigenstate energy. Inserting a normal metal layer or tunnel barrier layer between one FM contact and the AFM alters this phase difference, and, due to the unequal weight…
Electrically Sign-Reversible Topological Hall Effect in a Top-Gated Topological Insulator (Bi,Sb)2Te3 on a Ferrimagnetic Insulator Europium Iron Garnet
In this work, we demonstrate that skyrmions can be nucleated in the free layer of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) by a spin-polarized current with the assistance of stray fields from the pinned layer. The size, stability and number of created skyrmions can be tuned by either the DMI strength or the stray field distribution. The interaction between the stray field and the DMI effective field is discussed. A device with multi-level tunneling magnetoresistance is proposed, which could pave the ways for skyrmion-MTJ-based multi-bit storage and artific…
Multiple magnetic skyrmion phases add an additional degree of freedom for skyrmion based ultrahigh-density spin memory devices. Extending the field to two-dimensional van der Waals magnets is a rewarding challenge, where the realizable degree of freedoms (e.g. thickness, twisting angle and electrical gating) and high skyrmion density result in intriguing new properties and enhanced functionality. We report a van der Waals interface, formed by two 2D ferromagnets Cr2Ge2Te6 and Fe3GeTe2 with a Curie temperature of ~65 K and ~205 K, respectively, hosting two groups of magnetic skyrmions. Two sets…
The recent discovery of tunable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in layered magnetic materials with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy makes them promising candidates for stabilization and manipulation of skyrmions at elevated temperatures. In this article, we use Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the robustness of skyrmions in these materials against thermal fluctuations and finite-size effects. We find that in confined geometries and at finite temperatures skyrmions are present in a large part of the phase diagram. Moreover, we find that the confined geometry favors the skyrmion over t…
We discuss the contribution of magnetic Skyrmions to the Hall viscosity and propose a simple way to identify it in experiments. The topological Skyrmion charge density has a distinct signature in the electric Hall conductivity that is identified in existing experimental data. In an electrically neutral system, the Skyrmion charge density is directly related to the thermal Hall conductivity. These results are direct consequences of the field theory Ward identities, which relate various physical quantities based on symmetries and have been previously applied to quantum Hall systems.
Magnetic skyrmions are chiral nanoscale spin textures which are usually induced by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Recently, magnetic skyrmions have been observed in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnetic materials, such as Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$. The electric control of skyrmions is important for their potential application in low-power memory technologies. Here, we predict that DMI and magnetic skyrmions in a Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ monolayer can be controlled by ferroelectric polarization of an adjacent 2D vdW ferroelectric In$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. Based on density functional theor…
