We conducted photometric and spectroscopic observations for Ross 15 in order to further study the flare properties of this less observed flare star. A total of 28 B-band flares are detected in 128 hours of photometric observations, leading to a total flare rate of 0.22(+-0.04) hour^-1, more accurate than that provided by previous work. We give the energy range of the B-band flare (10^29.5 - 10^31.5 erg) and the FFD for the star. Within the same energy range, the FFD are lower than that of GJ 1243 (M4) and YZ CMi (M4.5), roughly in the middle of those of three M5-type stars and higher than the average FFDs of spectral types >= M6. We performed, for the first time to Ross 15, simultaneous high-cadence spectroscopic and photometric observations, resulting in detection of the most energetic flare in our sample. The intensity enhancements of the continuum and Balmer lines with significant correlations between them are detected during the flare, which is same with that of the other deeply studied flare stars of the similar spectral type.
We present the results of a coordinated campaign to simultaneously observe the M star binary Ross 733 simultaneously in the optical and near-ultraviolet (NUV) with TESS and Swift respectively. We observed two flares in the Swift NUV light curve. One of these was decay phase of a flare that was also detected with TESS and the other was only detected in the NUV. We used the TESS light curve to measure the white-light flare rate of Ross 733, and calculate that the system flares with an energy of $10^{33}$ erg once every 1.5 days. We used our simultaneous observations to measure a pseudo-continuum…
A homogeneous search for stellar flares has been performed using every available Kepler light curve. An iterative light curve de-trending approach was used to filter out both astrophysical and systematic variability to detect flares. The flare recovery completeness has also been computed throughout each light curve using artificial flare injection tests, and the tools for this work have been made publicly available. The final sample contains 851,168 candidate flare events recovered above the 68% completeness threshold, which were detected from 4041 stars, or 1.9% of the stars in the Kepler dat…
We present an analysis of flares in mid-to-late M dwarfs in the MEarth photometric survey. We search 3985155 observations across 2226 stars, and detect 54 large ($Δm \geq 0.018$) flares in total, distributed across 34 stars. We combine our flare measurements with recent activity and rotation period results from MEarth to show that there is an increase in flares per observation from low Rossby number ($R_o<0.04$, rapid rotators) to intermediate Rossby number ($0.04<R_o<0.44$, intermediate rotators) at the 99.85\% confidence level. We additionally find an increased flare rate from the high Rossb…
The energy in the solar acoustic spectrum is known to be correlated with flares, but it is not known if the same is true for stellar flares? In order to answer this question, we have analyzed 73 flares in 39 solar-like stars. These flares were identified in the 854 solar-like stars observed by the Kepler spacecraft that have stellar parameters measured with asteroseismology. Though we were not able to identify a statistically significant enhancement of the energy in the high-frequency part of the post-flare acoustic spectra compared to the pre-flare spectra of these stars, we did identify a la…
We have carried out a search for flares from the analysis of light curves for 12 active G, K, and M dwarfs. As sources of data we used ground-based observations in 2000-2020 from the photometric databases ASAS, SuperWASP, KWS. Events of low-amplitude brightening (Delta V < 0.25 mag), which possibly could be flares, were revealed for 11 stars. A large number of such increases in brightness were found on K dwarfs. Events of increasing in V-magnitudes to 0.5 mag or more were detected on light curves of one G star, BE Cet, and two M dwarfs. For three flares we could follow their development with t…
Understanding how the magnetic activity of low-mass stars depends on their fundamental parameters is an important goal of stellar astrophysics. Previous studies show that activity levels are largely determined by the stellar Rossby number which is defined as the rotation period divided by the convective turnover time. However, we currently have little information on the role that chemical composition plays. In this work, we investigate how metallicity affects magnetic activity using photometric variability as an activity proxy. Similarly to other proxies, we demonstrate that the amplitude of p…
We present a flare rate analysis of 50,130 M dwarf light curves in SDSS Stripe 82. We identified 271 flares using a customized variability index to search ~2.5 million photometric observations for flux increases in the u- and g-bands. Every image of a flaring observation was examined by eye and with a PSF-matching and image subtraction tool to guard against false positives. Flaring is found to be strongly correlated with the appearance of H-alpha in emission in the quiet spectrum. Of the 99 flare stars that have spectra, we classify 8 as relatively inactive. The flaring fraction is found to in…
Over the past years, thousands of stellar flares have been detected by harvesting data from large photometric surveys. These detections, however, do not account for potential sources of contamination such as background stars appearing in the same aperture as the primary target. We present a new method for identifying the true flare sources in large photometric surveys using data from the Kepler mission. Potential flares are identified in two steps: first, we search the light curves for at least two subsequent data points exceeding a 5σ threshold above the running mean. For these two cadences, …
Context: Active M dwarfs frequently exhibit large flares, which can pose an existential threat to the habitability of any planet in orbit in addition to making said planets more difficult to detect. M dwarfs do not lose angular momentum as easily as earlier-type stars, which maintain the high levels of stellar activity for far longer. Studying young, fast-rotating M dwarfs is key to understanding their near stellar environment and the evolution of activity Aims: We study stellar activity on the fast-rotating M dwarf GJ 3270. Methods: We analyzed dedicated high cadence, simultaneous, photometri…
Based on one-month long MMT time-series observations of the open cluster M37, we monitored light variations of nearly 2500 red dwarfs and successfully identified 420 flare events from 312 cluster M dwarf stars. For each flare light curve, we derived observational and physical parameters, such as flare shape, peak amplitude, duration, energy, and peak luminosity. We show that cool stars produce serendipitous flares energetic enough to be observed in the $r$-band, and their temporal and peak characteristics are almost the same as those in traditional $U$-band observations. We also found many lar…
We present our new photometry of DV Psc obtained in 2010 and 2011, and new spectroscopic observation on Feb. 14, 2012. During our observations, three flare-like events might be detected firstly in one period on DV Psc. The flare rate of DV Psc is about 0.017 flares per hour. Using Wilson-Devinney program, we derived the preliminary starspot parameters. Moreover, the magnetic cycle is 9.26(+/-0.78) year analyzed by variabilities of Max.I - Max.II.
Optical Flares Detected on a Contact Binary: The First Photometric and Spectroscopic Analysis of a Long-period Low Mass Ratio Contact Binary HAT 307-0007476
The CoRoT satellite has made available high precision photometric observations of a large number of stars of different spectral types. Continuous photometric time series allow the characterization of stellar microvariability in a systematic way. We determine an index indicating the level of activity, derived from photometric data, for a large sample of stars with different color temperatures. We also assess to what extent this index can be related to an estimated Rossby number for stars whose rotation period can be estimated. We also estimate a characteristic lifetime of the surface heterogene…
We analyze the light curve of 1740 flare stars to study the relationship between the magnetic feature characteristics and the identified flare activity. Coverage and stability of magnetic features are inspired by rotational modulation of light curve variations and flare activity of stars are obtained using our automated flare detection algorithm. The results show that (i) Flare time occupation ratio (or flare frequency) and total power of flares increase by increasing relative magnetic feature coverage and contrast in F-M type stars (ii) Magnetic feature stability is highly correlated with the…
We undertook observations with the Green Bank Telescope, simultaneously with the 300m telescope in Arecibo, as a follow-up of a possible flare of radio emission from Ross 128. We report here the non-detections from the GBT observations in C band (4-8 GHz), as well as non-detections in archival data at L band (1.1-1.9 GHz). We suggest that a likely scenario is that the emission comes from one or more satellites passing through the same region of the sky.
We present here optical I-band photometric variability study down to $\simeq$ 19 mag of a young ($\sim$2-3 Myr) star-forming region IC 348 in the Perseus molecular cloud. We aim to explore the fast rotation (in the time-scales of hours) in Very Low Mass stars (VLMs) including Brown Dwarfs (BDs). From a sample of 177 light-curves using our new I-band observations, we detect new photometric variability in 22 young M-dwarfs including 6 BDs, which are bonafide members in IC 348 and well-characterized in the spectral type of M-dwarfs. Out of 22 variables, 11 M dwarfs including one BD show hour-scal…
We present the first rates of flares from M dwarf stars in both red optical and near infrared (NIR) filters. We have studied ~50,000 M dwarfs from the SDSS Stripe 82 area, and 1,321 M dwarfs from the 2MASS Calibration Scan Point Source Working Database that overlap SDSS imaging fields. We assign photometric spectral types from M0 to M6 using (r-i) and (i-z) colors for every star in our sample. Stripe 82 stars each have 50-100 epochs of data, while 2MASS Calibration stars have ~1900 epochs. From these data we estimate the observed rates and theoretical detection thresholds for flares in eight p…

本文通过对三颗中期 M 矮星的同时光谱与测光观测,发现 7 次耀发在 Hα 等色球谱线中呈现蓝翼不对称性,并据此估计了可能的暗条爆发质量及其与 CME 的关系。
We performed simple spot-model calculations for quasi-periodic brightness variations of solar-type stars showing superflares, by using Kepler photometric data. Most of superflare stars show quasi-periodic brightness modulations with the typical period of one to a few tens of days. Our results indicate that these brightness variations of superflare stars can be explained by the rotation of the star with fairly large starspots. Using the result of the period analysis, we investigated the relation between the energy and frequency of superflares and the rotation period. Stars with relatively slowe…
We present our search for flares from M dwarf stars in the SkyMapper Southern Survey DR1, which covers nearly the full Southern hemisphere with six-filter sequences that are repeatedly observed in the passbands $uvgriz$. This allows us to identify bona-fide flares in single-epoch observations on timescales of less than four minutes. Using a correlation-based outlier search algorithm we find 254 flare events in the amplitude range of $Δu \sim 0.1$ to 5~mag. In agreement with previous work, we observe the flaring fraction of M dwarfs to increase from $\sim 30$ to $\sim $1,000 per million stars f…
We present the results of a search for white light flares on the ~23,000 cool dwarfs in the Kepler Quarter 1 long cadence data. We have identified 373 flaring stars, some of which flare multiple times during the observation period. We calculate relative flare energies, flare rates and durations, and compare these with the quiescent photometric variability of our sample. We find that M dwarfs tend to flare more frequently but for shorter durations than K dwarfs, and that they emit more energy relative to their quiescent luminosity in a given flare than K dwarfs. Stars that are more photometrica…
We report on the results of fifteen months of monitoring the nearby field L1 dwarf WISEP J190648.47+401106.8 (W1906+40) with the Kepler mission. Supporting observations with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array and Gemini North telescope reveal that the L dwarf is magnetically active, with quiescent radio and variable H$α$ emission. A preliminary trigonometric parallax shows that W1906+40 is at a distance of $16.35^{+0.36}_{-0.34}$ pc, and all observations are consistent with W1906+40 being an old disk star just above the hydrogen-burning limit. The star shows photometric variability with a per…
We present a time-resolved differential photometric study and time series analysis of the nova-like cataclysmic variable star LQ Peg. We discover three periodicities in the photometry, one with a period of 3.42 +/- 0.03 hours, and another with a period of 56.8 +/- 0.01 hours. We interpret these to be the apsidal superhump and precessional periods of the accretion disk, respectively, and predict that the orbital period of LQ Peg is 3.22 +/- 0.03 hours. The third periodicity, with a period of 41.3 +/- 0.01 hours, we interpret to be the nodal precessional period of the accretion disk. We also rep…
Detailed studies of the Sun have shown that sunspots and solar flares are closely correlated. Photometric data from Kepler/K2 has allowed similar studies to be carried out on other stars. Here, we utilise TESS photometric 2-min cadence of 167 low mass stars from Sectors 1 - 3 to investigate the relationship between starspots and stellar flares. From our sample, 90 percent show clear rotational modulation likely due to the presence of a large, dominant starspot and we use this to determine a rotational period for each star. Additionally, each low mass star shows one or more flares in its lightc…
We present spectroscopic and photometric analysis of KIC\,9451096, where the latter is based on very high precision long cadence photometry obtained by $Kepler$ space craft. Combined spectroscopic and photometric modeling show that the system is a detached eclipsing binary in a circular orbit and composed of F5V + K2V components. Subtracting the best--fit light curve model from whole long cadence data reveals additional low (mmag) amplitude light variation in time and occasional flares, suggesting low, but still remarkable level of magnetic spot activity on the K2V component. Analyzing rotatio…
We present an investigation of the magnetic activity and flare characteristics of the sub-giant stars mostly from F and G spectral types and compare the results with the main-sequence (MS) stars. The light curve of 352 stars on the sub-giant branch (SGB) from the Kepler mission is analyzed in order to infer stability, relative coverage and contrast of the magnetic structures and also flare properties using three flare indexes. The results show that: (i) Relative coverage and contrast of the magnetic features along with rate, power and magnitude of flares increase on the SGB due to the deepenin…
Stellar flares are energetic events occurring in stellar atmospheres. They have been observed on various stars using photometric light curves and spectra. On some cool stars, flares tend to release substantially more energy compared to solar flares. Spectroscopic observations have revealed that some spectral lines, aside from an enhancement and broadening, exhibit asymmetry in their profile. Asymmetries with enhanced blue wings are often associated with the presence of coronal mass ejections while the origin of the red asymmetries is currently not well understood. A few mechanisms have been su…
Stellar flares are an important aspect of magnetic activity -- both for stellar evolution and circumstellar habitability viewpoints - but automatically and accurately finding them is still a challenge to researchers in the Big Data era of astronomy. We present an experiment to detect flares in space-borne photometric data using deep neural networks. Using a set of artificial data and real photometric data we trained a set of neural networks, and found that the best performing architectures were the recurrent neural networks (RNNs) using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) layers. The best trained ne…
The ultrafast-rotating ($P_\mathrm{rot}\approx0.44 d$) fully convective single M4 dwarf V374 Peg is a well-known laboratory for studying intense stellar activity in a stable magnetic topology. As an observable proxy for the stellar magnetic field, we study the stability of the light curve, and thus the spot configuration. We also measure the occurrence rate of flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). We analyse spectroscopic observations, $BV(RI)_C$ photometry covering 5 years, and additional $R_C$ photometry that expands the temporal base over 16 years. The light curve suggests an almost rig…
We present detections of stellar flares of Wolf\,359, an M6.5 dwarf in the solar neighborhood (2.41~pc) known to be prone to flares due to surface magnetic activity. The observations were carried out from 2020 April 23 to 29 with a 1-m and a 0.5-m telescope separated by nearly 300~km in Xinjiang, China. In 27~hr of photometric monitoring, a total of 13 optical flares were detected, each with a total energy of $\gtrsim 5 \times 10^{29}$~erg. The measured event rate of about once every two hours is consistent with those reported previously in radio, X-ray and optical wavelengths for this star. O…
Based on the database of photometric observations of the CRTS project over an interval of more than 9 years, the activity of red dwarfs from the GTSh10 catalog was analyzed. The total number of analyzed objects, a list of stars with detected flares, amplitudes and moments of recorded events are presented. For the most interesting objects, from the point of view of the analysis of are activity, the light curves are plotted on the investigated time interval.
We study the relationship between Galactic location ($R, Z$) and photometric activity for 3.6 million M dwarf stars within 1 kpc of the Sun. For this purpose, we identify 906 unique flare events as a proxy for magnetic activity from the SkyMapper Southern Survey DR3. We adopt vertical distance $|Z|$ from the Galactic disc as a proxy for age and confirm a strong trend of flaring fraction decreasing with growing stellar age. Among M dwarfs within 50 pc of the Sun, we find a flaring fraction of 1-in-1,500, independent of spectral type from M2 to M7, suggesting that these stars are all in a flare-…
Activity in low-mass stars is an important ingredient in the evolution of such objects. Fundamental physical properties such as age, rotation, magnetic field are correlated with activity. Aims: We show that two components of the low-mass triple system LHS 1070 exhibit strong flaring activity. We identify the flaring components and obtained an improved astrometric solution for the LHS 1070 A/(B+C) system. Methods: Time-series CCD observations were used to monitor LHS 1070 in the B and I_C bands. H-band data were used to obtain accurate astrometry for the LHS 1070 A/(B+C) system. Results: We hav…

Four months of quasi-simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observations were used to study the variations of the photometric light curve, the evolution of the chromospheric activity from the H$α$ and H$β$ lines, and the distribution of cool spots from Doppler maps. During our observations one side of the star was more active than the other. The equivalent width of the H$α$ line from the least active hemisphere increased from ~0.7 Å at the beginning of the observation to 1.0 Å at the end. The basal emission of the most active hemisphere remained roughly constant at a H$α$ EW of ~1.0 Å. Int…
High-energy radiation caused by exoplanetary space weather events from planet-hosting stars can play a crucial role in conditions promoting or destroying habitability in addition to the conventional factors. In this paper, we present the first quantitative impact evaluation system of stellar flares on the habitability factors with an emphasis on the impact of Stellar Proton Events. We derive the maximum flare energy from stellar starspot sizes and examine the impacts of flare associated ionizing radiation on CO$_2$, H$_2$, N$_2$+O$_2$ --rich atmospheres of a number of well-characterized terres…
We present continuous, high-precision photometric monitoring data with 1 minute cadence of the dM3e flare star AD Leo with the {\it MOST} satellite. We observed 19 flares in 5.8 days, and find a flare frequency distribution that is similar to previous studies. The light curve reveals a sinusoidal modulation with period of $2.23^{+0.36}_{-0.27}$ days that we attribute to the rotation of a stellar spot rotating into and out of view. We see no correlation between the occurrence of flares and rotational phase, indicating that there may be many spots distributed at different longitudes, or possibly…
We present a study of flare rates, rotation periods, and spectroscopic activity indicators of 125 single stars within 15 parsecs and with masses between 0.1$-$0.3 $M_\odot$ observed during the first year of the TESS mission, with the goal of elucidating the relationship between these various magnetically connected phenomena. We gathered multi-epoch high resolution spectra of each target and we measured equivalent widths of the activity indicators Helium I D$_3$, $Hα$, and the Calcium infrared triplet line at 8542.09 angstroms. We present 18 new rotation periods from MEarth photometry and 19 ne…
We present a study of photometric flares on 154 low-mass ($\leq 0.2 \textrm{M}_{\odot}$) objects observed by the SPECULOOS-South Observatory from 1st June 2018 to 23rd March 2020. In this sample we identify 85 flaring objects, ranging in spectral type from M4 to L0. We detect 234 flares in this sample, with energies between $10^{29.2}$ and $10^{32.7}$ erg, using both automated and manual methods. With this work, we present the largest photometric sample of flares on late-M and ultra-cool dwarfs to date. By extending previous M dwarf flare studies into the ultra-cool regime, we find M5-M7 stars…
It is well established that late-type main-sequence stars display a relationship between X-ray activity and the Rossby number, $Ro$, the ratio of rotation period to the convective turnover time. This manifests itself as a saturated regime (where X-ray activity is constant) and an unsaturated regime (where X-ray activity anti-correlates with the Rossby number). However, this relationship breaks down for the fastest rotators. We cross-correlated SuperWASP visually classified photometric light curves and ASAS-SN automatically classified photometric light curves with XMM-Newton X-ray observations …
This paper reports the results from the multicolor photometric observations of 15 pre-main sequence stars collected in the period 2010 September - 2017 October. The stars from our study are located in the star-forming HII region IC 5070. These objects were previously detected as either emission line stars, flare stars, T Tauri variables or Herbig Ae/Be stars. Photometric observations, especially concerning the long-term behavior of the objects are missing in the literature. We present the first photometric monitoring for all stars from our study. The analysis of the obtained BVRI photometric d…

In this work, 1272 superflares on 311 stars are collected from 22,539 solar-type stars from the second-year observation of Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which almost covered the northern hemisphere of the sky. Three superflare stars contain hot Jupiter candidates or ultrashort-period planet candidates. We obtain $γ= -1.76\pm 0.11$ of the correlation between flare frequency and flare energy ($dN/dE\propto E^{-γ}$) for all superflares and get $β=0.42\pm0.01$ of the correlation between superflare duration and energy ($T_{\text {duration }} \propto E^β$), which supports that a simi…
We present a comprehensive study of the active dM4e star GJ 1243. We use previous observations and ground-based echelle spectroscopy to determine that GJ 1243 is a member of the Argus association of field stars, suggesting it is $\sim 30-50$ Myr old. We analyze eleven months of 1-minute cadence data from Kepler, presenting Kepler flare frequency distributions, as well as determining correlations between flare energy, amplitude, duration, and decay time. We find that the exponent $α$ of the power-law flare energy distribution varies in time, primarily due to completeness of sample and the low f…
We report here the discovery of an optical flare observed in R band from the red-dwarf eclipsing binary CU Cnc whose component stars are at the upper boundary of full convection (M1=0.43 and M2=0.4M0, M0 is the solar mass). The amplitude of the flare is the largest among those detected in R band (~0.52mag) and the duration time is about 73 minutes. As those observed on the Sun, quasi-periodic oscillations were seen during and after the flare. Three more R-band flares were found by follow up monitoring. In total, this binary was monitored photometrically by using R filter for 79.9 hours, which …
Measurements of photometric variability at different wavelengths provide insights into the vertical cloud structure of brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects. In seven Hubble Space Telescope consecutive orbits, spanning $\sim$10 h of observing time}, we obtained time-resolved spectroscopy of the planetary-mass T8-dwarf Ross 458C using the near-infrared Wide Field Camera 3. We found spectrophotometric variability with a peak-to-peak signal of 2.62$\pm$0.02 % (in the 1.10-1.60~$μ$m white light curve). Using three different methods, we estimated a rotational period of 6.75$\pm$1.58~h for the whi…
We present long-term, multi-color photometric monitoring and spectroscopic observations of the short-period M-type eclipsing binary BX Tri. Six flare events were recorded in 4 years from 2014 to 2017. Three of them were detected on one night within an orbital cycle. The strongest one was identified on December 23, 2014. With the amplitudes of $Δ$B=0.48 mag, $Δ$V=0.28 mag, $Δ$R=0.10 mag, $Δ$I=0.02 mag, the total energy due to the flare event was measured to be 4.08 ($\pm$0.24) $\times$$10^{34}$ erg, exceeding the superflare level ($10^{34}$). Based on the observations, the evolutionary status o…

We present comprehensive spectroscopic and photometric analysis of the detached eclipsing binary KIC 12418816, which is composed of two very similar and young main sequence stars of spectral type K0 on a circular orbit. Combining spectroscopic and photometric modelling, we find masses and radii of the components as 0.88+-0.06 Msun and 0.84+-0.05 Msun, and 0.85+-0.02 Rsun, and 0.84+-0.02 Rsun for the primary and the secondary, respectively. Both components exhibit narrow emission features superposed on the cores of the Ca II H&K lines, while H alpha and H beta photospheric absoprtion is more co…
