We conducted the time-resolved simultaneous optical spectroscopic and photometric observations of mid M dwarf flare stars YZ CMi, EV Lac, and AD Leo. Spectroscopic observations were obtained using Apache Point Observatory 3.5m and Small \& Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System 1.5m telescopes during 31 nights. Among the 41 detected flares, seven flares showed clear blue wing asymmetries in the H$α$ line, with various correspondences in flare properties. The duration of the blue wing asymmetries range from 20 min to 2.5 hours, including a flare showing the shift from blue to red wing asymmetry. Blue wing asymmetries can be observed during both white-light and candidate non white-light flares. All of the seven flares showed blue wing asymmetries also in the H$β$ line, but there are large varieties on which other chromospheric lines showed blue wing asymmetries. One among the 7 flares was also observed with soft X-ray spectroscopy, which enabled us to estimate the flare magnetic field and length of the flare loop. The line-of-sight velocities of the blue-shifted components range from -73 to -122 km s$^{-1}$. Assuming that the blue-shifts were caused by prominence eruptions, the mass of upward moving plasma was estimated to be 10$^{15}$ -- 10$^{19}$ g, which are roughly on the relation between flare energy and erupting mass expected from solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Although further investigations are necessary for understanding the observed various properties, these possible prominence eruptions on M-dwarfs could evolve into CMEs, assuming the similar acceleration mechanism with solar eruptions.

We performed coordinated observations of AR 12205, which produced a C-class flare on 2014 November 11, with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) and the Domeless Solar Telescope (DST) at Hida Observatory. Using spectral data in the Si IV 1403 Å, C II 1335 Å, and Mg II h and k lines from IRIS and the Ca II K, Ca II 8542 Å, and H$α$ lines from DST, we investigated a moving flare kernel during the flare. In the Mg II h line, the leading edge of the flare kernel showed the intensity enhancement in the blue wing, and the smaller intensity of the blue-side peak (h2v) than that of the red…
The linear polarization produced by scattering processes in the hydrogen Lyman alpha line of the solar disk radiation is a key observable for probing the chromosphere-corona transition region (TR) and the underlying chromospheric plasma. While the line-center signal encodes information on the magnetic field and three-dimensional structure of the TR, the sizable scattering polarization signals that the joint action of partial frequency redistribution (PRD) and J-state interference produce in the Lyman alpha wings have generally been thought to be sensitive only to the thermal structure of the s…
With observations of IRIS, we study chromospheric heating and evaporation during an M1.6 flare SOL2015-03-12T11:50. At the flare ribbons, the Mg II 2791.59 line shows quasi-periodic short-duration red-wing enhancement, which is likely related to repetitive chromospheric condensation as a result of episodic heating. On the contrary, the Si IV 1402.77 line reveals a persistent red-wing asymmetry in both the impulsive and decay phases, suggesting that this line responds to both cooling downflows and chromospheric condensation. The first two episodes of red-wing enhancement occurred around 11:42 U…
Kepler photometry of the hot Neptune host star HAT-P-11 suggests that its spot latitude distribution is comparable to the Sun's near solar maximum. We search for evidence of an activity cycle in the CaII H & K chromospheric emission $S$-index with archival Keck/HIRES spectra and observations from the echelle spectrograph on the ARC 3.5 m Telescope at APO. The chromospheric emission of HAT-P-11 is consistent with a $\gtrsim 10$ year activity cycle, which plateaued near maximum during the Kepler mission. In the cycle that we observed, the star seemed to spend more time near active maximum than m…
We analyze a grid of radiative hydrodynamic simulations of solar flares to study the energy balance and response of the atmosphere to nonthermal electron beam heating. The appearance of chromospheric bubbles is one of the most notable features that we find in the simulations. These pockets of chromospheric plasma get trapped between the transition region and the lower atmosphere as it is superheated by the particle beam. The chromospheric bubbles are seen in the synthetic spectra, appearing as an additional component to Balmer line profiles with high Doppler velocities as high as 200 km/s. The…
The Atmospheric Response to Large Electron Beam Fluxes in Solar Flares III: Comprehensive Modeling of the Brightest Observed Near-Ultraviolet Continuum Source in an X9 Solar Flare
The asymmetries observed in the line profiles of solar flares can provide important diagnostics of the properties and dynamics of the flaring atmosphere. In this paper the evolution of the Halpha and Ca II 8542 Å lines are studied using high spatial, temporal and spectral resolution ground-based observations of an M1.1 flare obtained with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope. The temporal evolution of the Halpha line profiles from the flare kernel shows excess emission in the red wing (red asymmetry) before flare maximum, and excess in the blue wing (blue asymmetry) after maximum. However, the Ca I…
We examine spectra of the Ca II H line, obtained under good seeing conditions with the VTT Echelle Spectrograph in June of 2007, and higher resolution data of the Ca II 8542 Angstrom line from Fabry-Perot instruments. The VTT targets were areas near disk center which included quiet Sun and some dispersed plage. The infrared data included quiet Sun and plage associated with small pores. Bright chromospheric network emission patches expand little with wavelength from line wing to line center, i.e. with increasing line opacity and height. We argue that this simple observation has implications for…
Red-shifted components of chromospheric emission lines in the hard X-ray impulsive phase of solar flares have recently been studied through their 30 s evolution with the high resolution of IRIS. Radiative-hydrodynamic flare models show that these redshifts are generally reproduced by electron-beam generated chromospheric condensations. The models produce large ambient electron densities, and the pressure broadening of hydrogen Balmer series should be readily detected in observations. To accurately interpret upcoming spectral data of flares with the DKIST, we incorporate non-ideal, non-adiabati…

We present observations of distinct UV spectral properties at different locations during an atypical X-shaped flare (SOL2014-11-09T15:32) observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). In this flare, four chromospheric ribbons appear and converge at an X-point where a separator is anchored. Above the X-point, two sets of non-coplanar coronal loops approach laterally and reconnect at the separator. The IRIS slit was located close to the X-point, cutting across some of the flare ribbons and loops. Near the location of the separator, the Si IV 1402.77 A line exhibits significantly …
We report the latest view of Kepler solar-type (G-type main-sequence) superflare stars, including recent updates with Apache Point Observatory (APO) 3.5m telescope spectroscopic observations and Gaia-DR2 data. First, we newly conducted APO3.5m spectroscopic observations of 18 superflare stars found from Kepler 1-min time cadence data. More than half (43 stars) are confirmed to be "single" stars, among 64 superflare stars in total that have been spectroscopically investigated so far in this APO3.5m and our previous Subaru/HDS observations. The measurements of $v\sin i$ (projected rotational vel…
We recently reported extremely rapid changes in chromospheric fine structure observed using the IBIS instrument in the red wing of H alpha. Here, we examine data obtained during the same observing run (August 7 2010), of a mature active region NOAA 11094. We analyze more IBIS data including wavelength scans and data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory, all from within a 30 minute interval. Using a slab radiative transfer model, we investigate the physical nature of fibrils in terms of tube-like vs. sheet-like structures. Principal Component Analysis shows that the very rapid H alpha variations…
Using data obtained by the high resolution CRisp Imaging SpectroPolarimeter instrument on the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope, we investigate the dynamics and stability of quiet-Sun chromospheric jets observed at disk center. Small-scale features, such as Rapid Redshifted and Blueshifted Excursions, appearing as high speed jets in the wings of the H$α$ line, are characterized by short lifetimes and rapid fading without any descending behavior. To study the theoretical aspects of their stability without considering their formation mechanism, we model chromospheric jets as twisted magnetic flux tube…
Recent solar spectroscopic observations have shown that coronal spectral lines can exhibit asymmetric profiles, with enhanced emissions at their blue wings. These asymmetries correspond to rapidly upflowing plasmas at speeds exceeding ~ 50 km/s. Here, we perform a study of the density of the rapidly upflowing material and compare it to that of the line core which corresponds to the bulk of the plasma. For this task we use spectroscopic observations of several active regions taken by the Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer of the Hinode mission. The density sensitive ratio of the Fe XIV li…
We investigate the linear correlation coefficient between the intensities at different wavelengths in photospheric and chromospheric spectral lines. Waves that propagate vertically through the stratified solar atmosphere affect different wavelengths at different times. This leads to a characteristic pattern of (non-)coherence of the intensity at various wavelengths. We derived the correlation matrices for several photospheric and chromospheric spectral lines from observations. For comparison with the observations, we calculate correlation matrices for spectra from LTE modeling approaches, 1-D …
We present temporal variations of the Si IV line profiles at the flare ribbons in three solar flares observed by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). In the M1.1 flare on 2014 September 6 and the X1.6 flare on 2014 September 10, the Si IV line profiles evolve from wholly redshifted to red-wing enhanced with the flare development. However, in the B1.8 flare on 2016 December 2, the Si IV line profiles are wholly redshifted throughout the flare evolution. We fit the wholly redshifted line profiles with a single Gaussian function but the red-asymmetric ones with a double Gaussian func…
This paper identifies spectral lines from X-ray to infrared wavelengths which are optimally suited to measuring vector magnetic fields as high as possible in the solar atmosphere. Instrumental and Earth's atmospheric properties, as well as solar abundances, atmospheric properties and elementary atomic physics are considered without bias towards particular wavelengths or diagnostic techniques. While narrowly-focused investigations of individual lines have been reported in detail, no assessment of the comparative merits of all lines has ever been published. Although in the UV, on balance the Mg+…
With observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS), we track the complete evolution of $\sim$11 MK evaporation flows in an M1.1 flare on 2014 September 6 and an X1.6 flare on 2014 September 10. These hot flows, as indicated by the blueshifted Fe~{\sc{xxi}}~1354.08Å~line, evolve smoothly with a velocity decreasing exponentially from $\sim$200~km~s$^{-1}$ to almost stationary within a few minutes. We find a good correlation between the flow velocity and energy deposition rate as represented by the hard X-Ray flux observed with the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopi…
We study off-limb emission of the lower solar atmosphere using high-resolution imaging spectroscopy in the H$β$ and Ca II 8542 Å lines obtained with the CHROMospheric Imaging Spectrometer (CHROMIS) and the CRisp Imaging SpectroPolarimeter (CRISP) on the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope. The H$β$ line wing images show the dark intensity gap between the photospheric limb and chromosphere which is absent in the Ca II images. We calculate synthetic spectra of the off-limb emissions with the RH code in the one-dimension spherical geometry and find good agreement with the observations. The analysis of sy…
A triplet of subordinate lines of Mg II exists in the region around the h&k lines. In solar spectra these lines are seen mostly in absorption, but in some cases can become emission lines. The aim of this work is to study the formation of this triplet, and investigate any diagnostic value they can bring. Using 3D radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulations of quiet Sun and flaring flux emergence, we synthesize spectra and investigate how spectral features respond to the underlying atmosphere. We find that emission in the lines is rare and is typically caused by a steep temperature increase in the…
It has previously been argued that 1. spicules do not provide enough pre-heated plasma to fill the corona, and 2. even if they did, additional heating would be required to keep the plasma hot as it expands upward. We here address the question of whether spicules play an important role by injecting plasma at cooler temperatures ($< 2$ MK), which then gets heated to coronal values at higher altitudes. We measure red-blue asymmetries in line profiles formed over a wide range of temperatures in the bright moss areas of two active regions. We derive emission measure distributions from the excess wi…
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) reveals small-scale rapid brightenings in the form of bright grains all over coronal holes and the quiet sun. These bright grains are seen with the IRIS 1330 Å, 1400 Å and 2796 Å slit-jaw filters. We combine coordinated observations with IRIS and from the ground with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) which allows us to have chromospheric (Ca II 8542 Å, Ca II H 3968 Å, Hα, and Mg II k 2796 Å), and transition region (C II 1334 Å, Si IV 1402) spectral imaging, and single-wavelength Stokes maps in Fe I 6302 Åat high spatial (0.33"), temporal and…
Using the spectroscopic imaging capabilities of the Swedish Solar Telescope, we aim to provide the first investigation on the nature and dynamics of elongated absorption features (fibrils) observed in H$α$ in the internetwork. We observe and identify a number of internetwork fibrils, which form away from the kilogauss, network magnetic flux, and we provide a synoptic view on their behaviour. The internetwork fibrils are found to support wave-like behaviour, which we interpret as Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) kink waves. The properties of these waves, that is, amplitude, period, and propagation spe…
We observed the extreme close-in hot Jupiter system WASP-12 with HST. Near-UV transits up to three times deeper than the optical transit of WASP-12b reveal extensive diffuse gas, extending well beyond the Roche lobe. The distribution of absorbing gas varies between visits. The deepest NUV transits are at wavelength ranges with strong photospheric absorption, implying the absorbing gas may have temperature and composition similar to the stellar photosphere. Our spectra reveal significantly enhanced absorption (greater than 3 σbelow the median) at ~200 wavelengths on each of two HST visits; 65 o…
Ellerman bombs (EBs) are brightenings in the H$α$ line wings that are believed to be caused by magnetic reconnection in the lower atmosphere. To study the response and evolution of the chromospheric line profiles, we perform radiative hydrodynamic simulations of EBs using both non-thermal and thermal models. Overall, these models can generate line profiles that are similar to observations. However, in non-thermal models we find dimming in the H$α$ line wings and continuum when the heating begins, while for the thermal models dimming occurs only in the H$α$ line core, and with a longer lifetime…
Over the last two decades the uninterrupted, high-resolution observations of the Sun, from the excellent range of telescopes aboard many spacecraft complemented with observations from sophisticated ground-based telescopes have opened up a new world producing significantly more complete information on the physical conditions of the solar atmosphere than before. The interface between the lower solar atmosphere where energy is generated by subsurface convection and the corona comprises the chromosphere, which is dominated by jet-like, dynamic structures, called mottles when found in quiet regions…
The origin of the near-ultraviolet and optical continuum radiation in flares is critical for understanding particle acceleration and impulsive heating in stellar atmospheres. Radiative-hydrodynamic simulations in 1D have shown that high energy deposition rates from electron beams produce two flaring layers at T~10^4 K that develop in the chromosphere: a cooling condensation (downflowing compression) and heated non-moving (stationary) flare layers just below the condensation. These atmospheres reproduce several observed phenomena in flare spectra, such as the red wing asymmetry of the emission …
The new CRISP filter at the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope provides opportunities for observing the solar atmosphere with unprecedented spatial resolution and cadence. In order to benefit from the high quality of observational data from this instrument, we have developed methods for calibrating and restoring polarized Stokes images, obtained at optical and near infrared wavelengths, taking into account field-of-view variations of the filter properties. In order to facilitate velocity measurements, a time series from a 3D hydrodynamical granulation simulation is used to compute quiet Sun spectral …
Numerous apparent signatures of magnetic reconnection have been reported in the solar photosphere, including inverted-Y shaped jets. The reconnection at these sites is expected to cause localised bi-directional flows and extended shock waves; however, these signatures are rarely observed as extremely high spatial-resolution data are required. Here, we use H-alpha imaging data sampled by the Swedish Solar Telescope's CRisp Imaging SpectroPolarimeter to investigate whether bi-directional flows can be detected within inverted-Y shaped jets near the solar limb. These jets are apparent in the H-alp…
Recent observations revealed loop-like structures at very small scales visible in observables that sample transition region (TR) and coronal temperatures. Their formation remains unclear. We study an example of a bipolar system in realistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations and forward synthesis of spectral lines to investigate how these features occur. Computations are done using the MURaM code to generate model atmospheres. The synthetic H$α$ and Si IV spectra are calculated at two angles ($μ= 1$, $μ= 0.66$) using the Multi3D code. Magnetic field lines are traced in the model and the evolution…
Aims. To investigate the role of acoustic and magneto-acoustic waves in heating the solar chromosphere, observations in strong chromospheric lines are analyzed by comparing the deposited acoustic-energy flux with the total integrated radiative losses. Methods. Quiet-Sun and weak-plage regions were observed in the Ca II 854.2 nm and H-alpha lines with the Fast Imaging Solar Spectrograph (FISS) at the 1.6-m Goode Solar Telescope (GST) on 2019 October 3 and in the H-alpha and H-beta lines with the echelle spectrograph attached to the Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) on 2018 December 11 and 2019 June …
Acoustic waves are one of the primary suspects besides magnetic fields for the chromospheric heating process to temperatures above radiative equilibrium (RE). We derived the mechanical wave energy as seen in line-core velocities to obtain a measure of mechanical energy flux with height for a comparison with the energy requirements in a semi-empirical atmosphere model. We analyzed a 1-hour time series and a large-area map of Ca II H spectra on the traces of propagating waves. We analyzed the velocity statistics of several spectral lines in the wing of Ca II H, and the line-core velocity of Ca I…
Stellar activity is ubiquitously encountered in M dwarfs and often characterised by the H$α$ line. In the most active M dwarfs, H$α$ is found in emission, sometimes with a complex line profile. Previous studies have reported extended wings and asymmetries in the H$α$ line during flares. We used a total of 473 high-resolution spectra of 28 active M dwarfs obtained by the CARMENES (Calar Alto high-Resolution search for M dwarfs with Exo-earths with Near-infrared and optical Echelle Spectrographs) spectrograph to study the occurrence of broadened and asymmetric H$α$ line profiles and their associ…
To study motions and oscillations in the solar chromosphere and at the transition region (TR) level we analyze some extreme Doppler shifts observed off-limb with the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS). Raster scans and slit-jaw imaging observations performed in the near-ultraviolet (NUV) channels were used. Large transverse oscillations are revealed by the far wings profiles after accurately removing the bulk average line profiles of each sequence. Different regions around the Sun are considered. Accordingly, the cool material of spicules is observed in Mg II lines rather dispersed u…
Chromospheric observations taken at high cadence and high spatial resolution show a range of spicule like features, including Type I, Type II (as well as RBEs and RREs) and those which seem to appear within a few seconds, which if interpreted as flows would imply mass flow velocities in excess of 1000 km/s. This article seeks to quantify and study rapidly appearing spicular type events. We also compare the MOMFBD and speckle reconstruction techniques in order to understand if such spicules are more favourably observed using a particular technique. We use spectral imaging observations taken wit…
The Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph(IRIS) with its high spatial and temporal resolution brings exceptional plasma diagnostics of solar chromospheric and coronal activity during magnetic reconnection. The aim of this work is to study the fine structure and dynamics of the plasma at a jet base forming a mini flare between two emerging magnetic fluxes (EMFs) observed with IRIS and the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) instruments. We proceed to a spatio-temporal analysis of IRIS spectra observed in the spectral ranges of Mg II, C II, and Si IV ions. Doppler velocities from Mg II lines are co…
Stellar flares are characterized by sudden enhancement of electromagnetic radiation in stellar atmospheres. So far much of our understanding of stellar flares comes from photometric observations, from which plasma motions in flare regions could not be detected. From the spectroscopic data of LAMOST DR7, we have found one stellar flare that is characterized by an impulsive increase followed by a gradual decrease in the H$α$ line intensity on an M4-type star, and the total energy radiated through H$α$ is estimated to be on the order of $10^{33}$ erg. The H$α$ line appears to have a Voigt profile…
A spatio-temporal analysis of IRIS spectra of MgII, CII, and SiIV ions allows us to study the dynamics and the stratification of the flare atmosphere along the line of sight during the magnetic reconnection phase at the jet base. Strong asymmetric MgII and CII line profiles with extended blue wings observed at the reconnection site are interpreted by the presence of two chromospheric temperature clouds: one explosive cloud with blueshifts at 290 km/s and one cloud with smaller Doppler shift (around 36 km/s). Simultaneously at the same location a mini flare was observed with strong emission in …

On 2014 March 29, an intense solar flare classified as X1.0 occurred in the active region 12017. Several associated phenomena accompanied this event, among them a fast-filament eruption, large-scale propagating disturbances in the corona and the chromosphere including a Moreton wave, and a coronal mass ejection. This flare was successfully detected in multiwavelength imaging in H-alpha line by the Flare Monitoring Telescope (FMT) at Ica University, Peru. We present a detailed study of the Moreton wave associated with the flare in question. Special attention is paid to the Doppler characteristi…
We aim at reproducing the height dependence of sunspot wave signatures obtained from spectropolarimetric observations through 3D MHD numerical simulations. A magneto-static sunspot model based on the properties of the observed sunspot is constructed and perturbed at the photosphere introducing the fluctuations measured with the \SiI\ $λ$ 10827 Å line. The results of the simulations are compared with the oscillations observed simultaneously at different heights from the \HeI\ $λ$ 10830 Å line, the \CaIIH\ core and the \FeI\ blends in the wings of the \CaIIH\ line. The simulations show a remarka…
We analyze observations from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph of the Mg II k line, the Mg II UV subordinate lines, and the O I 135.6 nm line to better understand the solar plage chromosphere. We also make comparisons with observations from the Swedish 1 m Solar Telescope of the Hα line, the Ca II 8542 line, and Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly observations of the coronal 19.3 nm line. To understand the observed Mg II profiles, we compare these observations to the results of numerical experiments. The single-peaked or flat-topped Mg II k profiles found in plage i…
The large number of close-in Jupiter-size exoplanets prompts the question whether star-planet interaction (SPI) effects can be detected. We focused our attention on the system HD 17156, having a Jupiter-mass planet in a very eccentric orbit. Here we present results of the XMM-Newton observations and of a five months coordinated optical campaign with the HARPS-N spectrograph. We observed HD 17156 with XMM-Newton when the planet was approaching the apoastron and then at the following periastron passage, quasi simultaneously with HARPS-N. We obtained a clear ($\approx 5.5σ$) X-ray detection only …
Coronal holes (CHs) regions are dark in comparison to the quiet-Sun (QS) at the coronal temperatures. However, at chromospheric and transition region (TR) temperatures, QS and CHs are hardly distinguishable. In this study we have used the \ion{Mg}{2}~2796.35~Å spectral line recorded by the Interface Region Imaging Spectrometer (IRIS) to understand the similarities and differences in the QS and CH at chromospheric levels. Our analysis reveals that the emission from \ion{Mg}{2}~k3 \& k2v that originates in the chromosphere is significantly lower in CH than in QS for the regions with similar magn…
Activity studies of solar-type stars, especially with reference to the status of our current Sun among them, have exposed the importance of (1) homogeneously selecting the sample stars and (2) reliably evaluating their activities down to a considerably low level. Motivated by these requirements, we conducted an extensive study on the activities of 118 solar-analog stars (of sufficiently similar properties to each other) by measuring the emission strength at the core of Ca II 3933.663 line (K line) on the high-dispersion spectrogram obtained by Subaru/HDS, where special attention was paid to co…
