We derive exact form of the piecewise-linear finite element stiffness matrix on general non-uniform meshes for the integral fractional Laplacian operator in one dimension, where the derivation is accomplished in the Fourier transformed space. With such an exact formulation at our disposal, we are able to numerically study some intrinsic properties of the fractional stiffness matrix on some commonly used non-uniform meshes (e.g., the graded mesh), in particular, to examine their seamless transition to those of the usual Laplacian.
We consider a singularly perturbed convection-diffusion with exponential and characteristic boundary layers. The problem is numerically solved by the FEM and SDFEM method with bilinear elements on a graded mesh. For the FEM we prove almost uniform convergence and superconvergence. The use of graded mesh allows for the SDFEM to prove almost uniform esimates in the SD norm, which is not possible for Shishkin type meshes.
We present a novel probabilistic finite element method (FEM) for the solution and uncertainty quantification of elliptic partial differential equations based on random meshes, which we call random mesh FEM (RM-FEM). Our methodology allows to introduce a probability measure on standard piecewise linear FEM. We present a posteriori error estimators based uniquely on probabilistic information. A series of numerical experiments illustrates the potential of the RM-FEM for error estimation and validates our analysis. We furthermore demonstrate how employing the RM-FEM enhances the quality of the sol…
Thanks to a finite element method, we solve numerically parabolic partial differential equations on complex domains by avoiding the mesh generation, using a regular background mesh, not fitting the domain and its real boundary exactly. Our technique follows the phi-FEM paradigm, which supposes that the domain is given by a level-set function. In this paper, we prove a priori error estimates in l2(H1) and linf(L2) norms for an implicit Euler discretization in time. We give numerical illustrations to highlight the performances of phi-FEM, which combines optimal convergence accuracy, easy impleme…
In this paper, we study diagonal dominance of the stiffness matrix resulted from the piecewise linear finite element discretisation of the integral fractional Laplacian under global homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition in one spatial dimension. We first derive the exact form of this matrix in the frequency space which is extendable to multi-dimensional rectangular elements. Then we give the complete answer when the stiffness matrix can be strictly diagonally dominant. As one application, we apply this notion to the construction of maximum principle preserving schemes for the fractional-in-…
One of the major issues in the computational mechanics is to take into account the geometrical complexity. To overcome this difficulty and to avoid the expensive mesh generation, geometrically unfitted methods, i.e. the numerical methods using the simple computational meshes that do not fit the boundary of the domain, and/or the internal interfaces, have been widely developed. In the present work, we investigate the performances of an unfitted method called $ϕ$-FEM that converges optimally and uses classical finite element spaces so that it can be easily implemented using general FEM libraries…

This work studies three multigrid variants for matrix-free finite-element computations on locally refined meshes: geometric local smoothing, geometric global coarsening, and polynomial global coarsening. We have integrated the algorithms into the same framework-the open-source finite-element library deal.II-, which allows us to make fair comparisons regarding their implementation complexity, computational efficiency, and parallel scalability as well as to compare the measurements with theoretically derived performance models. Serial simulations and parallel weak and strong scaling on up to 147…
We propose, analyze mathematically, and study numerically a novel approach for the finite element approximation of the spectrum of second-order elliptic operators. The main idea is to reduce the stiffness of the problem by subtracting a least-squares penalty on the gradient jumps across the mesh interfaces from the standard stiffness bilinear form. This penalty bilinear form is similar to the known technique used to stabilize finite element approximations in various contexts. The penalty term is designed to dampen the high frequencies in the spectrum and so it is weighted here by a negative co…
The inverse of the stiffness matrix of the time-harmonic Maxwell equation with perfectly conducting boundary conditions is approximated in the blockwise low-rank format of ${\mathcal H}$-matrices. We prove that root exponential convergence in the block rank can be achieved if the block structure conforms to a standard admissibility criterion.
Nonlocality brings many challenges to the implementation of finite element methods (FEM) for nonlocal problems, such as large number of queries and invoke operations on the meshes. Besides, the interactions are usually limited to Euclidean balls, so direct numerical integrals often introduce numerical errors. The issues of interactions between the ball and finite elements have to be carefully dealt with, such as using ball approximation strategies. In this paper, an efficient representation and construction methods for approximate balls are presented based on combinatorial map, and an efficien…
$H^1$-conforming Galerkin methods on polygonal meshes such as VEM, BEM-FEM and Trefftz-FEM employ local finite element functions that are implicitly defined as solutions of Poisson problems having polynomial source and boundary data. Recently, such methods have been extended to allow for mesh cells that are curvilinear polygons. Such extensions present new challenges for determining suitable quadratures. We describe an approach for integrating products of these implicitly defined functions, as well as products of their gradients, that reduces integrals on cells to integrals along their boundar…

This study presents a generalized multiscale multimesh finite element method ($\text{M}^2$-FEM) that addresses several long-standing challenges in the numerical simulation of integral structural theories, often used to model multiscale and nonlocal effects. The major challenges in the numerical simulation of integral boundary value problems are primarily rooted in the coupling of the spatial discretization of the global (parent) and integral (child) domains which severely restricts the computational efficiency of existing algorithms by imposing an implicit trade-off in the accuracy achieved by…
