Localized excitons play a vital role in the optical response of monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides and can be exploited as single photon sources for quantum information technology. While the optical properties of such localized excitons are vastly studied, the ultrafast capture process of delocalized excitons into localized potentials is largely unexplored. We perform quantum kinetic calculations of exciton capture via acoustic and optical phonons showing that efficient capture takes place on an ultrafast time scale. The polaron formation in the low-temperature limit leads to higher-energy excitons which can then be efficiently trapped. We demonstrate that the interplay of acoustic and optical phonons leads to an efficient broadening of energy-selection rules. Our studies provide a deep understanding of the carrier trapping from two-dimensional materials into zero-dimensional potentials.
We develop an analytically solvable model able to qualitatively explain nonhydrogenic exciton spectra observed recently in two-dimensional (2d) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides. Our exciton Hamiltonian explicitly includes additional angular momentum associated with the pseudospin degree of freedom unavoidable in 2d semiconducting materials with honeycomb structure. We claim that this is the key ingredient for understanding the nonhydrogenic exciton spectra that was missing so far.
We study theoretically the Coulomb interaction between excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers. We calculate direct and exchange interaction for both ground and excited states of excitons. The screening of the Coulomb interaction, specific to monolayer structures, leads to the unique behavior of the exciton-exciton scattering for excited states, characterized by the non-monotonic dependence of the interaction as function of the transferred momentum. We find that the nontrivial screening enables the description of TMD exciton interaction strength by approximate formula whic…
We investigate the correction of interlayer exciton binding energy in transition metal dichalcogenides double layers arising from the exciton-optical phonon coupling using the method of Lee-Low-Pines unitary transformation. We find that the binding energy varies in several tens of meV, depending on the polarizability of materials and interlayer distance between double layers. Moreover, the correction of binding energy results in the remarkable increasing of the critical temperature for the condensation of dilute excitonic gas basing on the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless model. These results n…
We study the neutral exciton energy spectrum fine structure and its spin dephasing in transition metal dichalcogenides such as MoS$_2$. The interaction of the mechanical exciton with its macroscopic longitudinal electric field is taken into account. The splitting between the longitudinal and transverse excitons is calculated by means of the both electrodynamical approach and $\mathbf k \cdot \mathbf p$ perturbation theory. This long-range exciton exchange interaction can induce valley polarization decay. The estimated exciton spin dephasing time is in the picosecond range, in agreement with av…
Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (STMDC) are two-dimensional (2D) crystals characterized by electron volt size band gaps, spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and d-orbital character of its valence and conduction bands. We show that these materials carry unique exciton quasiparticles (electron-hole bound states) with energy within the gap but which can ``collapse'' in the strong coupling regime by merging into the band structure continuum. The exciton collapse seems to be a generic effect in these 2D crystals.
While exciton relaxation in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has been intensively studied, spatial exciton propagation has received only little attention - in spite of being a key process for optoelectronics and having already shown interesting unconventional behaviours (e.g. spatial halos). Here, we study the spatiotemporal dynamics in TMDs and track the way of optically excited excitons in time, momentum, and space. In particular, we investigate the temperature-dependent exciton diffusion including the remarkable exciton landscape constituted by bright and dark states. Based on a full…
We theoretically investigate the chiral topological excitons emerging in the monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, where a bulk energy gap of valley excitons is opened up by a position dependent external magnetic field. We find two emerging chiral topological nontrivial excitons states, which exactly connects to the bulk topological properties, i.e., Chern number =2. The dependences of the spectrum of the chiral topological excitons on the width of the magnetic field domain wall as well as the magnetic filed strength are numerically revealed. The chiral topological valley excitons are no…
Using the quasiclassical concept of Berry curvature we demonstrate that a Dirac exciton - a pair of Dirac quasiparticles bound by Coulomb interactions - inevitably possesses an intrinsic angular momentum making the exciton effectively self-rotating. The model is applied to excitons in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, in which the charge carriers are known to be described by a Dirac-like Hamiltonian. We show that the topological self-rotation strongly modifies the exciton spectrum and, as a consequence, resolves the puzzle of the overestimated two-dimensional polarizability emp…
We present low temperature magneto-photoluminescence experiments which demonstrate the brightening of dark excitons by an in-plane magnetic field $B$ applied to monolayers of different semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides. For both WSe$_2$ and WS$_2$ monolayers, the dark exciton emission is observed at $\sim$50 meV below the bright exciton peak and displays a characteristic doublet structure which intensity is growing with $B^2$, while no magnetic field induced emission peaks appear for MoSe$_2$ monolayer. Our experiments also show that the MoS$_2$ monolayer has a dark exciton groun…
We show that excitons and free carriers in K and K' valleys of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers can be entangled with respect to their valley degree of freedom by absorbing linearly polarized single photons. This effect does not require any interaction between K and K' excitons in contrast to conventional mechanisms of entanglement that are mediated by coupling between quantum systems (e.g.~entanglement of photons in nonlinear optical interactions). The valley entanglement of excitons and free carriers can be verified by measuring the polarization of their photoluminescence or fluctu…
When transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers lack inversion symmetry, their low-energy single particle spectrum can described by tilted massive Dirac Hamiltonians. The so-called Janus materials fall into that category. Inversion symmetry can also be broken by the application of out-of-plane electric fields, or by the mere presence of a substrate. Here we explore the properties of excitons in TMDC monolayers lacking inversion symmetry. We find that exciton binding energies can be larger than the electronic band gap, making such materials promising candidates to host the elusive exciton insul…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides feature Coulomb-bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) with exceptionally large binding energy and coupled spin and valley degrees of freedom. These unique attributes have been leveraged for electrical and optical control of excitons for atomically-thin optoelectronics and valleytronics. The development of such technologies relies on understanding and quantifying the fundamental properties of the exciton. A key parameter is the intrinsic exciton homogeneous linewidth, which reflects irreversible quantum dissipation arising from system (exciton) and bath…
We theoretically investigate the corrections of exciton binding energy in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) due to the exciton-optical phonon coupling in the Fr$\ddot{o}$hlich interaction model by using the linear operator combined Lee-Low-Pines variational method. We not only consider the excitons couple with the intrinsic longitudinal optical (LO) phonon modes, but also the surface optical phonon modes that induced by the polar substrates underneath the TMDs. We find that exciton binding energies are corrected in a large scale due to these exciton-optical phonon couplings. We…
The effect of a magnetic field on the optical absorption in semiconductors has been measured experimentally and modeled theoretically for various systems in previous decades. We present a new first-principles approach to systematically determine the response of excitons to magnetic fields, i.e. exciton $g$ factors. By utilizing the $GW$-Bethe-Salpeter equation methodology we show that $g$ factors extracted from the Zeeman shift of electronic bands are strongly renormalized by many-body effects which we trace back to the extent of the excitons in reciprocal space. We apply our approach to monol…
Due to the Coulomb interaction exciton eignestates in monolayer transitional metal dichalcogenides are coherent superposition of two valleys. The exciton band which couples to the transverse electric mode of light has parabolic dispersion for the center of mass momentum, whereas the one which couples to the transverse magnetic mode has both parabolic and linear components. In this work we present an experimental proposal to observe the signatures of linear component of the dispersion. In particular, it is demonstrated that by pumping the system with linearly polarized light the exciton transpo…
Two-dimensional group-VI transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, such as MoS2, WSe2 and others, exhibit strong light-matter coupling and possess direct band gaps in the infrared and visible spectral regimes, making them potentially interesting candidates for various applications in optics and optoelectronics. Here, we review their optical and optoelectronic properties with emphasis on exciton physics and devices. As excitons are tightly bound in these materials and dominate the optical response even at room-temperature, their properties are examined in depth in the first part of this a…
The remarkably strong Coulomb interaction in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) results in an extraordinarily rich many-particle physics including the formation of tightly bound excitons. Besides optically accessible bright excitonic states, these materials also exhibit a variety of dark excitons. Since they can even lie below the bright states, they have a strong influence on the exciton dynamics, lifetimes, and photoluminescence. While very recently, the presence of dark excitonic states has been experimentally demonstrated, the origin of these states, their formation, a…
Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have recently emerged as possible candidates for valleytronic applications, as the spin and valley pseudospin are directly coupled and stabilized by a large spin splitting. In these semiconducting materials, optically excited electron-hole pairs form tightly Coulomb-bound excitons with large binding energies. The selection rules for excitonic transitions allow for direct optical generation of a valley-polarized exciton population using resonant excitation. Here, we investigate the exciton valley dynamics in monolayers of three different TMDCs …
The interaction between off-resonant laser pulses and excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides is attracting increasing interest as a route for the valley-selective coherent control of the exciton properties. Here, we extend the classification of the known off-resonant phenomena by unveiling the impact of a strong THz field on the excitonic resonances of monolayer MoS$_2$. We observe that the THz pump pulse causes a selective modification of the coherence lifetime of the excitons, while keeping their oscillator strength and peak energy unchanged. We rationalize these results theo…
In this paper we develop the excitonic theory of Kerr rotation angle in a two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide at zero magnetic field. The finite Kerr angle is induced by the interplay between spin-orbit splitting and proximity exchange coupling due to the presence of a ferromagnet. We compare the excitonic effect with the single particle theory approach. We show that the excitonic properties of the 2D material lead to a dramatic change in the frequency dependence of the optical response function. We also find that the excitonic corrections enhance the optical response by a fac…
In heterostructures consisting of different transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers, a staggered band alignment can occur, leading to rapid charge separation of optically generated electron-hole pairs into opposite monolayers. These spatially separated electron-hole pairs are Coulomb-coupled and form interlayer excitons. Here, we study these interlayer excitons in a heterostructure consisting of MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$ monolayers using photoluminescence spectroscopy. We observe a non-trivial temperature dependence of the linewidth and the peak energy of the interlayer exciton, including an unu…
In monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, tightly bound excitons have been discovered with a valley pseudospin that can be optically addressed through polarization selection rules. Here, we show that this valley pseudospin is strongly coupled to the exciton center-of-mass motion through electron-hole exchange. This coupling realizes a massless Dirac cone with chirality index I=2 for excitons inside the light cone, i.e. bright excitons. Under moderate strain, the I=2 Dirac cone splits into two degenerate I=1 Dirac cones, and saddle points with a linear Dirac spectrum emerge in the bright e…
The influence of a perpendicular magnetic field on the binding energy and structural properties of excitons, trions, and biexcitons in monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is investigated. The stochastic variational method (SVM) with a correlated Gaussian basis is used to calculate the different properties of these few-particle systems. In addition, we present a simplified variational approach which supports the SVM results for excitons as a function of magnetic field. The exciton diamagnetic shift is compared with recent experimental results and we extend this …
The recent accessibility of high quality, charge neutral monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides with narrow exciton linewidths at the homogeneous limit provides an ideal platform to study excitonic many-body interactions. In particular, the possibility to manipulate coherent exciton-exciton interactions, which govern the ultrafast nonlinear optical response, by applying an external magnetic field has not been considered so far. We address this discrepancy by presenting a nonlinear microscopic theory in the coherent limit for optical excitations in the presence of out-of-plane, in-plane, an…
Excitons, trions, biexcitons, and exciton-trion complexes in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide sheets of MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, MoTe$_2$, WS$_2$ and WSe$_2$ are studied by means of density functional theory and path integral Monte Carlo method in order to accurately account for the particle-particle correlations. In addition, the effect of dielectric environment on the properties of these exciton complexes is studied by modifying the effective interaction potential between particles. Calculated exciton and trion binding energies are consistent with previous experimental and computati…
A four-band exciton Hamiltonian is constructed starting from the single-particle Dirac Hamiltonian for charge carriers in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The angular part of the exciton wave function can be separated from the radial part, in the case of zero center of mass momentum excitons, by exploiting the eigenstates of the total exciton angular momentum operator with which the Hamiltonian commutes. We explain why this approach fails for excitons with finite center of mass momentum or in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and present an approximation to resol…
Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have a remarkable excitonic landscape with deeply bound bright and dark exciton states. Their properties are strongly affected by lattice distortions that can be created in a controlled way via strain. Here, we perform a joint theory-experiment study investigating exciton diffusion in strained tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) monolayers. We reveal a non-trivial and non-monotonic influence of strain. Lattice deformations give rise to different energy shifts for bright and dark excitons changing the excitonic landscape, the efficiency of intervall…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are known to be highly sensitive to externally applied tensile or compressive strain. In particular, strain can be exploited as a tool to control the optical response of TMDs. However, the role of excitonic effects under strain has not been fully understood yet. Utilizing the strain-induced modification of electron and phonon dispersion obtained by first principle calculations, we present in this work microscopic insights into the strain-dependent optical response of various TMD materials. In particular, we explain recent experiments on the cha…
Embedding a monolayer of a transition metal dichalcogenide in a high-Q optical cavity results in the formation of distinct exciton polariton modes. The polaritons are affected by the strong exciton-phonon interaction in the monolayer. We use a time convolutionless master equation to calculate the phonon influence on the spectra of the polaritons. We discuss the non-trivial dependence of the line shapes of both branches on temperature and detuning. The peculiar polariton dispersion relation results in a linewidth of the lower polariton being largely independent of the coupling to acoustic phono…
We present a theory of optical absorption by interlayer excitons in a heterobilayer formed from transition metal dichalcogenides. The theory accounts for the presence of small relative rotations that produce a momentum shift between electron and hole bands located in different layers, and a moiré pattern in real space. Because of the momentum shift, the optically active interlayer excitons are located at the moiré Brillouin zone's corners, instead of at its center, and would have elliptical optical selection rules if the individual layers were translationally invariant. We show that the excito…
We obtain an analytical expression for the linewidth of the 1s-exciton as a function of temperature in transition metal dichalcogenides. The total linewidth, as function of temperature, is dominated by three contributions: (i) the radiative decay (essentially temperature independent); (ii) the phonon-induced intravalley scattering; (iii) the phonon-induced intervalley scattering. Our approach uses a variational \emph{Ansatz} to solve the Wannier equation allowing for an analytical treatment of the excitonic problem, including rates of the decay dynamics. Our results are in good agreement with …
The strong Coulomb interactions and the small exciton radii in two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides can result in very fast capture of electrons and holes of excitons by mid-gap defects from Auger processes. In the Auger processes considered here, an exciton is annihilated at a defect site with the capture of the electron (or the hole) by the defect and the hole (or the electron) is scattered to a high energy. In the case of excitons, the probability of finding an electron and a hole near each other is enhanced many folds compared to the case of free uncorrelated electrons and holes. Conseque…
In order to discuss the exciton fine-structure of transition-metal dichalcogenides mono-layers, excitons are first defined in the subspace of electron- and hole states, including the lowest conduction band (LCB) and the uppermost valence band (UVB). Both bands are spin degenerate at the Gamma-point. All other states are neglected. The resulting exciton states are analyzed in the framework of an invariant expansion of a model Hamiltonian: The spin-orbit coupling in the conduction- and valence band is simulated by introducing a fictive magnetic field, giving rise to a splitting of the electron- …
The dependence of the excitonic photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) on the tilt angle of an applied magnetic field is studied. Starting from a four-band Hamiltonian we construct a theory which quantitatively reproduces the available experimental PL spectra for perpendicular and in-plane magnetic fields. In the presence of a tilted magnetic field, we demonstrate that the dark exciton PL peaks brighten due to the in-plane component of the magnetic field and split for light with different circular polarization as a consequence of the perpendicular …
Exciton condensation in an electron-hole bilayer system of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides is analyzed at three different levels of theory to account for screening and quasiparticle renormalization. The large effective masses of the transition metal dichalcogenides place them in a strong coupling regime. In this regime, mean field (MF) theory with either an unscreened or screened interlayer interaction predicts a room temperature condensate. Interlayer and intralayer interactions renormalize the quasiparticle dispersion, and this effect is included in a GW approximation. The renorma…
The geometry of electronic bands in a solid can drastically alter single-particle charge and spin transport. We show here that collective optical excitations arising from Coulomb interactions also exhibit unique signatures of Berry curvature and quantum geometric tensor. A non-zero Berry curvature mixes and lifts the degeneracy of $l \neq 0$ states, leading to a time-reversal-symmetric analog of the orbital Zeeman effect. The quantum geometric tensor, on the other hand, leads to $l$-dependent shifts of exciton states that is analogous to the Lamb shift. Our results provide an explanation of th…
Transition-metal dichalcogenide heterostructures exhibit moiré patterns that spatially modulate the electronic structure across the material's plane. For certain material pairs, this modulation acts as a potential landscape with deep, trigonally symmetric wells capable of localizing interlayer excitons, forming periodic arrays of quantum emitters. Here, we study these moiré localized exciton states and their optical properties. By numerically solving the two-body problem for an interacting electron-hole pair confined by a trigonal potential, we compute the localized exciton spectra for differe…
The trend towards ever smaller high-performance devices in modern technology requires novel materials with new functionalities. The recent emergence of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials has opened up possibilities for the design of ultra-thin and flexible nanoelectronic devices. As truly 2D materials, they exhibit an optimal surface-to-volume ratio, which results in an extremely high sensitivity to external changes. This makes these materials optimal candidates for sensing applications. Here, we exploit the remarkably diverse exciton landscape in monolayer transition metal dichalc…
Light emission from higher-order correlated excitonic states has been recently reported in hBN-encapsulated monolayer WSe2 and WS2 upon optical excitation. These exciton complexes are found to be bound states of excitons residing in opposite valleys in momentum space, a promising feature that could be employed in valleytronics or other novel optoelectronic devices. However, electrically-driven light emission from such exciton species is still lacking. Here we report electroluminescence from bright and dark excitons, negatively charged trions and neutral and negatively charged biexcitons, gener…
The direct gap interband transitions in transition metal dichalcogenides monolayers are governed by chiral optical selection rules. Determined by laser helicity, optical transitions in either the $K^+$ or $K^-$ valley in momentum space are induced. Linearly polarized laser excitation prepares a coherent superposition of valley states. Here we demonstrate the control of the exciton valley coherence in monolayer WSe2 by tuning the applied magnetic field perpendicular to the monolayer plane. We show rotation of this coherent superposition of valley states by angles as large as 30 degrees in appli…
In order to fully exploit the potential of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers (TMD-MLs), the well-controlled creation of atomically sharp lateral heterojunctions within these materials is highly desirable. A promising approach to create such heterojunctions is the local modulation of the electronic structure of an intrinsic TMD-ML via dielectric screening induced by its surrounding materials. For the realization of this non-invasive approach, an in-depth understanding of such dielectric effects is required. We report on the modulations of excitonic transitions in TMD-MLs through the ef…
The problem of a size quantization for charge carriers in a planar quantum well consisting of different monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides is solved using the Dirac model and the four-band model. For excitons, bound states of electrons and holes at the size quantization levels in such a quantum well, the energy spectrum was found in two cases: the Bohr radius is much smaller than the width of the quantum well (dielectric permeability of a substrate is relatively small) and the Bohr radius is much larger than it (the case of a strong dielectric screening). It is shown that the energ…
We calculate the binding energy, transition energies, oscillator strength, and absorption coefficient of indirect excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) double layers separated by an integer number of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayers. The absorption factor, a dimensionless quantity which gives the fraction of incoming photons absorbed by the indirect excitons in the double layer, is evaluated. The aforementioned optical quantities are obtained for transitions from the ground state to the first two excited states. All quantities are studied as a function of the interlayer s…
Photoluminescence spectra, shows that monolayer Transition-metal dichalcogenides (MLTMDCs), possess charged exciton binding energies, conspicuously similar to the energy of optical phonons. This enigmatic coincidence has offered opportunities to investigate many-body interactions between trion, exciton and phonon and led to efficient excitonic anti-Stokes processes with the potential for laser refrigeration and energy harvesting. In this study, we show that in WSe2 materials, the trion binding energy matches two phonon modes, the outofplane HP and the in-plane LO mode. In this respect, using t…
We present results on the rates of interlayer energy transfer between excitons in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). We consider both radiative (mediated by real photons) and non-radiative (mediated by virtual photons) mechanisms of energy transfer using a unified Green's function approach that takes into account modification of the exciton energy dispersions as a result of interactions. The large optical oscillator strengths associated with excitons in TMDs result in very fast energy transfer rates. The energy transfer times depend on the exciton momentum, exciton linewi…
Preserving a high degree of valley polarization of excitons in photo-excited transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers (TMD-MLs) is desirable for the valley-based photonic applications, but widely recognized as a hard task hindered by the intrinsic electron-hole exchange interaction. In this study, we present a comprehensive investigation of valley-polarized finite-momentum excitons in WSe$_2$-MLs over the entire Brillouin zone by solving the density-functional-theory(DFT)-based Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) under the guidance of symmetry analysis. We reveal that finite-momentum excitons are …
In this work, we present a comprehensive theoretical and computational investigation of exciton fine structures of WSe$_2$-monolayers, one of the best known two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMD's), in various dielectric-layer environments by solving the first-principles-based Bethe-Salpeter equation. While the physical and electronic properties of atomically thin nano-materials are normally sensitive to the variation of surrounding environment, our studies reveal that the influence of dielectric environment on the exciton fine structures of TMD-ML's is surprisingly limite…
Excitons dominate the optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Besides optically accessible bright exciton states, TMDs exhibit also a multitude of optically forbidden dark excitons. Here, we show that efficient exciton-phonon scattering couples bright and dark states and gives rise to an asymmetric excitonic line shape. The observed asymmetry can be traced back to phonon-induced sidebands that are accompanied by a polaron redshift. We present a joint theory-experiment study investigating the microscopic origin of these sidebands in different TMD materials takin…
A rate equation model for the dark and bright excitons kinetics is proposed which explains the wide variation in the observed degree of circular polarization of the PL emission in different TMDs monolayers. Our work suggests that the dark exciton states play an important, and previously unsuspected role in determining the degree of polarization of the PL emission. A dark exciton ground state provides a robust reservoir for valley polarization, which tries to maintain a Boltzmann distribution of the bright exciton states in the same valley via the intra valley bright dark exciton scattering mec…
Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayers (MLs) exhibit rich photoluminescence spectra associated with interband optical transitions of direct-gap semiconductors. Upon absorption of photons, direct excitons with zero center-of-mass momentum are formed by photo-excited electrons in the conduction band and the respective unoccupied states in the valence band of the same valley. Different spin configurations of such momentum-direct excitons as well as their charged counterparts provide a powerful platform for spin-valley and microcavity physics in two-dimensional materials. The correspondi…
Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) feature exceptional optical properties that are dominated by excitons, tightly bound electron-hole pairs. Forming van der Waals heterostructures by deterministically stacking individual monolayers allows to tune various properties via choice of materials and relative orientation of the layers. In these structures, a new type of exciton emerges, where electron and hole are spatially separated. These interlayer excitons allow exploration of many-body quantum phenomena and are ideally suited for valleytronic applications. Mostly, a basic mode…
Reflectance and magneto-reflectance experiments together with theoretical modelling based on the $\mathbf{k\cdot p}$ approach have been employed to study the evolution of direct bandgap excitons in MoS$_2$ layers with a thickness ranging from mono- to trilayer. The extra excitonic resonances observed in MoS$_2$ multilayers emerge as a result of the hybridization of Bloch states of each sub-layer due to the interlayer coupling. The properties of such excitons in bi- and trilayers are classified by the symmetry of corresponding crystals. The inter- and intralayer character of the reported excito…
We perform a theoretical study of radiative decay of dark intravalley excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers. This decay necessarily involves an electronic spin flip. The intrinsic decay mechanism due to interband spin-flip dipole moment perpendicular to the monolayer plane, gives a rate about 100--1000 times smaller than that of bright excitons. However, we find that this mechanism also introduces an energy splitting due to a local field effect, and the whole oscillator strength is contained in the higher-energy component, while the lowest-energy state remains dark and needs a…
