In this paper we develop the excitonic theory of Kerr rotation angle in a two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide at zero magnetic field. The finite Kerr angle is induced by the interplay between spin-orbit splitting and proximity exchange coupling due to the presence of a ferromagnet. We compare the excitonic effect with the single particle theory approach. We show that the excitonic properties of the 2D material lead to a dramatic change in the frequency dependence of the optical response function. We also find that the excitonic corrections enhance the optical response by a factor of two in the case of MoS2 in proximity to a Cobalt thin film.
Semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (STMDC) are two-dimensional (2D) crystals characterized by electron volt size band gaps, spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and d-orbital character of its valence and conduction bands. We show that these materials carry unique exciton quasiparticles (electron-hole bound states) with energy within the gap but which can ``collapse'' in the strong coupling regime by merging into the band structure continuum. The exciton collapse seems to be a generic effect in these 2D crystals.
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are known to be highly sensitive to externally applied tensile or compressive strain. In particular, strain can be exploited as a tool to control the optical response of TMDs. However, the role of excitonic effects under strain has not been fully understood yet. Utilizing the strain-induced modification of electron and phonon dispersion obtained by first principle calculations, we present in this work microscopic insights into the strain-dependent optical response of various TMD materials. In particular, we explain recent experiments on the cha…
When transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers lack inversion symmetry, their low-energy single particle spectrum can described by tilted massive Dirac Hamiltonians. The so-called Janus materials fall into that category. Inversion symmetry can also be broken by the application of out-of-plane electric fields, or by the mere presence of a substrate. Here we explore the properties of excitons in TMDC monolayers lacking inversion symmetry. We find that exciton binding energies can be larger than the electronic band gap, making such materials promising candidates to host the elusive exciton insul…
Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides in the T' phase promise to realize the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect at room temperature, because they exhibit a prominent spin-orbit gap between inverted bands in the bulk. Here we show that the binding energy of electron-hole pairs excited through this gap is larger than the gap itself in MoS2, a paradigmatic material that we investigate from first principles by many-body perturbation theory (MBPT). This paradoxical result hints at the instability of the T' phase against the spontaneous generation of excitons, and indeed we find that it gives rise …
While exciton relaxation in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has been intensively studied, spatial exciton propagation has received only little attention - in spite of being a key process for optoelectronics and having already shown interesting unconventional behaviours (e.g. spatial halos). Here, we study the spatiotemporal dynamics in TMDs and track the way of optically excited excitons in time, momentum, and space. In particular, we investigate the temperature-dependent exciton diffusion including the remarkable exciton landscape constituted by bright and dark states. Based on a full…
Excitonic effects play a particularly important role in the optoelectronic behavior of two-dimensional semiconductors. To facilitate the interpretation of experimental photoabsorption and photoluminescence spectra we provide (i) statistically exact diffusion quantum Monte Carlo binding-energy data for a Mott-Wannier model of (donor/acceptor-bound) excitons, trions, and biexcitons in two-dimensional semiconductors in which charges interact via the Keldysh potential, (ii) contact pair-distribution functions to allow a perturbative description of contact interactions between charge carriers, and …
The magneto-optical response of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), including excitonic effects, is studied using a nanoribbon geometry. We compute the diagonal optical conductivity and the Hall conductivity. Comparing the excitonic optical Hall conductivity to results obtained in the independent particle approximation, we find an increase in the amplitude corresponding to one order of magnitude when excitonic effects are included. The Hall conductivities are used to calculate Faraday rotation spectra for MoS2 and WSe2. Finally, we have also calculated the diamagnetic shift of t…
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit novel electrical and optical properties and are emerging as a new platform for exploring 2D semiconductor physics. Reduced screening in 2D results in dramatically enhanced electron-electron interactions, which have been predicted to generate giant bandgap renormalization and excitonic effects. Currently, however, there is little direct experimental confirmation of such many-body effects in these materials. Here we present an experimental observation of extraordinarily large exciton binding energy in a 2D semiconducting TMD. W…
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a well-known nonlinear spectroscopy method to probe electronic structure, specifically, in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) monolayers. This work investigates the nonlinear dynamics of a strongly excited TMDC monolayer by solving the time evolution equations for the density matrix. It is shown that the presence of excitons qualitatively changes the nonlinear dynamics leading, in particular, to a huge enhancement of the nonlinear signal as a function of the dielectric environment. It is also shown that the SHG polarization angular diagram and its depend…
Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are direct-gap semiconductors with strong light-matter and Coulomb interaction. The latter accounts for tightly bound excitons, which dominate the optical properties of these technologically promising materials. Besides the optically accessible bright excitons, these systems exhibit a variety of dark excitonic states. They are not visible in optical spectra, but can strongly influence the coherence lifetime and the linewidth of the emission from bright exciton states. In a recent study, an experimental evidence for the existence of such d…
It is shown that the strong Coulomb coupling in intrinsic suspended semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides can exceed the critical value needed for an excitonic ground state. The dipole-allowed optical excitations then correspond to intra-excitonic transitions such that the optically bright excitonic transitions near the Dirac points have a $p$-like symmetry whereas the $s$-like states are dipole forbidden. The large intrinsic coupling strength seems to be a generic property of the semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides and strong Coulomb-coupling signatures in the form of th…
Preserving a high degree of valley polarization of excitons in photo-excited transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers (TMD-MLs) is desirable for the valley-based photonic applications, but widely recognized as a hard task hindered by the intrinsic electron-hole exchange interaction. In this study, we present a comprehensive investigation of valley-polarized finite-momentum excitons in WSe$_2$-MLs over the entire Brillouin zone by solving the density-functional-theory(DFT)-based Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) under the guidance of symmetry analysis. We reveal that finite-momentum excitons are …
Strain presents a straightforward tool to tune electronic properties of atomically thin nanomaterials that are highly sensitive to lattice deformations. While the influence of strain on the electronic band structure has been intensively studied, there are only few works on its impact on optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Combining microscopic theory based on Wannier and Bloch equations with nearestneighbor tight-binding approximation, we present an analytical view on how uni- and biaxial strain influences the optical fingerprint of TMDs including their exc…
A self-consistent scheme for the calculations of the interacting groundstate and the near bandgap optical spectra of mono- and multilayer transition-metal-dichalcogenide systems is presented. The approach combines a dielectric model for the Coulomb interaction potential in a multilayer environment, gap equations for the renormalized groundstate, and the Dirac-Wannier-equation to determine the excitonic properties. To account for the extension of the individual monolayers perpendicular to their basic plane, an effective thickness parameter in the Coulomb interaction potential is introduced. Num…
We propose and analyze a mechanism for inducing spin Hall currents in ordinary (1H phase) monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) due to the nonlinear process of optical rectification. The photo-induced spin current is proportional to the light intensity, and originates from the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in TMDs. The spin current spectrum is strongly influenced by electron-hole interactions, i.e. excitonic effects, analogous to the optical absorption. Remarkably, excitons change the temperature dependence of the induced spin current, to the point that the current direction can ev…
Reflectance and magneto-reflectance experiments together with theoretical modelling based on the $\mathbf{k\cdot p}$ approach have been employed to study the evolution of direct bandgap excitons in MoS$_2$ layers with a thickness ranging from mono- to trilayer. The extra excitonic resonances observed in MoS$_2$ multilayers emerge as a result of the hybridization of Bloch states of each sub-layer due to the interlayer coupling. The properties of such excitons in bi- and trilayers are classified by the symmetry of corresponding crystals. The inter- and intralayer character of the reported excito…
We obtain an analytical expression for the linewidth of the 1s-exciton as a function of temperature in transition metal dichalcogenides. The total linewidth, as function of temperature, is dominated by three contributions: (i) the radiative decay (essentially temperature independent); (ii) the phonon-induced intravalley scattering; (iii) the phonon-induced intervalley scattering. Our approach uses a variational \emph{Ansatz} to solve the Wannier equation allowing for an analytical treatment of the excitonic problem, including rates of the decay dynamics. Our results are in good agreement with …
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are known to support complex excitonic states. Revealing the differences in relaxation dynamics among different excitonic species and elucidating the transition dynamics between them may provide important guidelines for designing TMD-based excitonic devices. Combining photoluminescence (PL) and reflectance contrast measurements with ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy under cryogenic temperatures, we herein study the relaxation dynamics of neutral and charged excitons in a back-gate-controlled monolayer device. Pump-probe results reveal quite different rel…
We analyze the dielectric-function spectra of low dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) using a fully analytical model of the complex dielectric function that is applicable in fractional dimensional space. We extract the dimensionalities of the $A$ and $B$ excitons as well as their Lorentzian broadening widths by fitting the model to experimental data in the spectral range of photon energies (1.5 - 3 eV). Our results show the significant contribution of the lowest ground exciton state to the dielectric properties of exemplary monolayer materials (MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$). …
Two-dimensional group-VI transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, such as MoS2, WSe2 and others, exhibit strong light-matter coupling and possess direct band gaps in the infrared and visible spectral regimes, making them potentially interesting candidates for various applications in optics and optoelectronics. Here, we review their optical and optoelectronic properties with emphasis on exciton physics and devices. As excitons are tightly bound in these materials and dominate the optical response even at room-temperature, their properties are examined in depth in the first part of this a…
The remarkably strong Coulomb interaction in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) results in an extraordinarily rich many-particle physics including the formation of tightly bound excitons. Besides optically accessible bright excitonic states, these materials also exhibit a variety of dark excitons. Since they can even lie below the bright states, they have a strong influence on the exciton dynamics, lifetimes, and photoluminescence. While very recently, the presence of dark excitonic states has been experimentally demonstrated, the origin of these states, their formation, a…
It has been shown, that a magnetopolaron discrete energy spectrum is realized in the optical experiments where exciting light is directed perpendicularly to a quantum well (QW) plane. The phonon dispersion as well as Coulomb attraction can only shift the magnetopolaron discrete energy levels and broad some of them.
It is shown that the three-fold rotational symmetry in transition metal dichalcogenides leads to a Coulomb induced renormalization of the effective electron and hole masses near the $K$-points of the Brillouin zone. The magnitude of the renormalization depends on the dielectric configuration. The effective exciton mass $m=0.4 m_0$ of a freely suspended MoS$_2$ monolayer changes to $m= 0.35 m_0$ with hBN encapsulation. The mass renormalization increases the excitonic binding energy and reduces the exciton diamagnetic shift and cyclotron frequency. Detailed comparisons with high field measuremen…
Monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have a remarkable excitonic landscape with deeply bound bright and dark exciton states. Their properties are strongly affected by lattice distortions that can be created in a controlled way via strain. Here, we perform a joint theory-experiment study investigating exciton diffusion in strained tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) monolayers. We reveal a non-trivial and non-monotonic influence of strain. Lattice deformations give rise to different energy shifts for bright and dark excitons changing the excitonic landscape, the efficiency of intervall…
We calculate the dispersion of spinor exciton-polaritons in a planar microcavity with its active region containing a single Transitional Metal Dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayer, taking into account excitonic and photonic spin-orbit coupling. We consider the radial propagation of polaritons in presence of disorder. We show that the reduction of the disorder scattering induced by the formation of polariton states allows to observe an optical Valley Hall effect, namely the coherent precession of the locked valley and polarization pseudospins leading to the formation of spatial valley-polarized domai…
We propose an analytical approach for calculating the linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) responses of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) including excitonic effects. An effective Hamiltonian reproducing the trigonal warping (TW) of the energy dispersion, is used to derive analytical expressions for excitonic matrix elements. Based on this approach, we provide an informative diagram, which encompasses all excitonic selection rules. The diagram enables us to identify main transitions for the first-, second- and third-order optical responses. As a case study, we calculate the optic…
The recent accessibility of high quality, charge neutral monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides with narrow exciton linewidths at the homogeneous limit provides an ideal platform to study excitonic many-body interactions. In particular, the possibility to manipulate coherent exciton-exciton interactions, which govern the ultrafast nonlinear optical response, by applying an external magnetic field has not been considered so far. We address this discrepancy by presenting a nonlinear microscopic theory in the coherent limit for optical excitations in the presence of out-of-plane, in-plane, an…
Using an equation of motion (EOM) approach, we calculate excitonic properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) perturbed by an external magnetic field. We compare our findings to the widely used Wannier model for excitons in two-dimensional materials and to recent experimental results. We find good agreement between the calculated excitonic transition energies and the experimental results. In addition, we find that the exciton energies calculated using the EOM approach are slightly lower than the ones calculated using the Wannier model. Finally, we also show that the effect…
The optical Stark effect is a tell-tale signature of coherent light-matter interaction in excitonic systems, wherein an irradiating light beam tunes exciton transition frequencies. Here we show that, when excitons are placed in a nanophotonic cavity, the excitonic Stark effect can become highly nonlinear, exhibiting multi-valued and hysteretic Stark shifts that depend on the history of the irradiating light. This multistable Stark effect (MSE) arises from feedback between the cavity mode occupation and excitonic population, mediated by the Stark-induced mutual tuning of the cavity and excitoni…
We present a comprehensive theoretical analysis of composite excitonic states in doped transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers. Making use of the pair distribution function, we introduce a method to include the effect of screening in the interaction between the excitonic state and Fermi-sea electrons. Employing the screened potential, we study tetrons and pexcitons in which a trion is bound to one and two holes in the conduction band, respectively. A conduction-band hole denotes the lack of electrons with certain quantum numbers at the vicinity of the trion. We then analyze the hexciton com…
In this paper, we study the third-order nonlinear optical response due to transitions between excitonic levels in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogeniedes. To accomplish this, we use methods not applied to the description of excitons in two-dimensional materials so far and combined with a variational approach to describe the $1s$ excitonic state. The aforementioned transitions allow to probe dark states which are not revealed in absorption experiments. We present general formulas capable of describing any third-order process. The specific case of two-photon absorption in WSe2 is studi…
We theoretically investigate the chiral topological excitons emerging in the monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, where a bulk energy gap of valley excitons is opened up by a position dependent external magnetic field. We find two emerging chiral topological nontrivial excitons states, which exactly connects to the bulk topological properties, i.e., Chern number =2. The dependences of the spectrum of the chiral topological excitons on the width of the magnetic field domain wall as well as the magnetic filed strength are numerically revealed. The chiral topological valley excitons are no…
We present a comparative study of two self-assembled quantum dot (QD) systems based on II-VI compounds: CdTe/ZnTe and CdSe/ZnSe. Using magneto-optical techniques we investigated a large population of individual QDs. The systematic photoluminescence studies of emission lines related to the recombination of neutral exciton X, biexciton XX, and singly charged excitons (X$^+$, X$^-$) allowed us to determine average parameters describing CdTe QDs (CdSe QDs): X-XX transition energy difference 12 meV (24 meV); fine-structure splitting $δ_{1}=$0.14 meV ($δ_{1}=$0.47 meV); $g$-factor $g=$2.12 ($g=$1.71…
We investigate the correction of interlayer exciton binding energy in transition metal dichalcogenides double layers arising from the exciton-optical phonon coupling using the method of Lee-Low-Pines unitary transformation. We find that the binding energy varies in several tens of meV, depending on the polarizability of materials and interlayer distance between double layers. Moreover, the correction of binding energy results in the remarkable increasing of the critical temperature for the condensation of dilute excitonic gas basing on the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless model. These results n…
Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have recently emerged as possible candidates for valleytronic applications, as the spin and valley pseudospin are directly coupled and stabilized by a large spin splitting. In these semiconducting materials, optically excited electron-hole pairs form tightly Coulomb-bound excitons with large binding energies. The selection rules for excitonic transitions allow for direct optical generation of a valley-polarized exciton population using resonant excitation. Here, we investigate the exciton valley dynamics in monolayers of three different TMDCs …

The properties of energy spectrum of excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides are investigated using a multiband model. In the multiband model we use the excitonic Hamiltonian in the product base of the Dirac single-particle states at the conduction and valence band edges. Following the separation of variables we decouple the corresponding energy eigenvalue system of the first order ODE radial equations rigorously and solve the resulting the second order ODE self-consistently, using the finite difference method, thus we determine the energy eigenvalues of the discrete excitonic s…
Excitons dominate the optical properties of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Besides optically accessible bright exciton states, TMDs exhibit also a multitude of optically forbidden dark excitons. Here, we show that efficient exciton-phonon scattering couples bright and dark states and gives rise to an asymmetric excitonic line shape. The observed asymmetry can be traced back to phonon-induced sidebands that are accompanied by a polaron redshift. We present a joint theory-experiment study investigating the microscopic origin of these sidebands in different TMD materials takin…
Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have recently become attractive semiconductor materials for several optoelectronic applications, such as photodetection, light harvesting, phototransistors, light-emitting diodes, and lasers. They are particularly appealing because their bandgap lies in the visible and near-IR range, and they possess strong excitonic resonances, high oscillator strengths, and valley-selective response. Coupling these materials to optical nanocavities enhances the quantum yield of exciton emission, enabling advanced quantum optics and nanophotonic devices…
In monolayer group-VI transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC), charge carriers have spin and valley degrees of freedom, both associated with magnetic moments. On the other hand, the layer degree of freedom in multilayers is associated with electrical polarization. Here, we show that TMDC bilayers offer an unprecedented platform to realize a strong coupling between the spin, layer pseudospin, and valley degrees of freedom of holes. Such coupling not only gives rise to the spin Hall effect and spin circular dichroism in inversion symmetric bilayer, but also leads to a variety of magnetoelectric …
The influence of a perpendicular magnetic field on the binding energy and structural properties of excitons, trions, and biexcitons in monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is investigated. The stochastic variational method (SVM) with a correlated Gaussian basis is used to calculate the different properties of these few-particle systems. In addition, we present a simplified variational approach which supports the SVM results for excitons as a function of magnetic field. The exciton diamagnetic shift is compared with recent experimental results and we extend this …
We present a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the photo-generated excitons in transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers (TMD-ML's) by Laguerre-Gaussian beams, a celebrated kind of twisted lights (TL's) carrying quantized orbital angular momenta (OAM). We show that the photo-excitation of TL incident to a TMD-ML leads to the formation of spatially localized exciton wave packets, constituted by the superposition of finite-momentum exciton states determined by the intriguing interplay between the multiple degrees of freedom of the optical and excitonic subsystems. Consequently, the TL-…
One of the most striking features of novel 2D semiconductors (e.g., transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers or phosphorene) is a strong Coulomb interaction between charge carriers resulting in large excitonic effects. In particular, this leads to the formation of multi-carrier bound states upon photoexcitation (e.g., excitons, trions and biexcitons), which could remain stable at near-room temperatures and contribute significantly to optical properties of such materials. In the present work we have used the Path Integral Monte Carlo methodology to numerically study properties of multi-carrie…
We report high field magneto-optical study on the first and second sub-band transitions of single-chirality single-walled carbon nanotubes. The ordering and relative energy splitting between bright and dark excitonic states were found to be inverse between the first and second subbands. We verified that the zero-momentum dark singlet exciton lies below the bright exciton for the first subband transitions, while for the second sub-band transitions, it was found to have higher energy than the bright excitonic state. Effect of this peculiar excitonic structure was found to manifest itself in dist…
We study direct and indirect magnetoexcitons in Rydberg states in monolayers and heterostructures of transition-metal dichalcogenices (TMDCs) in an external magnetic field, applied perpendicular to the monolayer or heterostructures. We calculate binding energies of magnetoexcitons for the Rydberg states 1$s$, 2$s$, 3$s$, and 4$s$ by numerical integration of the Schrödinger equation using the Rytova-Keldysh potential for direct magnetoexcitons and both the Rytova-Keldysh and Coulomb potentials for indirect magnetoexcitons. Latter allows understanding the role of screening in TMDCs heterostructu…
We analyze the many-particle correlations that affect the optical properties of two-dimensional semiconductors. These correlations manifest themselves through the specific optical resonances such as excitons, trions, etc. Starting from the generic electron-hole Hamiltonian and employing the microscopic Heisenberg equation of motion the infinite hierarchy of differential equations can be obtained. In order to decouple the system we address the cluster expansion technique which provides a regular procedure of consistent accounting of many-particle correlation contributions into the interband pol…
We present a comprehensive optical study of the excitonic Zeeman effects in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers, which are discussed comparatively for selected materials: MoSe$_2$, WSe$_2$ and WS$_2$. We introduce a simple semi-phenomenological description of the magnetic field evolution of individual electronic states in fundamental sub-bands by considering three additive components: valley, spin and orbital terms. We corroborate the validity of the proposed description by inspecting the Zeeman-like splitting of neutral and charged excitonic resonances in absorption-type spectra. The v…
The weakly screened electron-hole interactions in an atomically thin semiconductor not only downshift its excitation spectrum from a quasiparticle one, but also redistribute excitation energies and wavefunction characters with profound effects on diverse modes of material response, including the exciton-phonon scattering processes accessible to resonant Raman measurements. Here we develop a first-principles framework to calculate frequency-dependent resonant Raman intensities that includes excitonic effects and goes beyond the Placzek approximation. We show how excitonic effects in MoS2 strong…
The interaction between off-resonant laser pulses and excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides is attracting increasing interest as a route for the valley-selective coherent control of the exciton properties. Here, we extend the classification of the known off-resonant phenomena by unveiling the impact of a strong THz field on the excitonic resonances of monolayer MoS$_2$. We observe that the THz pump pulse causes a selective modification of the coherence lifetime of the excitons, while keeping their oscillator strength and peak energy unchanged. We rationalize these results theo…
Magnetic tuning of the bound exciton states and corresponding giant Zeeman splitting (GZS) between σ^{+} and σ^{-} excitonic transitions in CdTe/Cd_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te quantum ring has been investigated in the Faraday configuration for various concentrations of Mn^{2+} ions, using the variational technique in the effective mass approximation. The sp-d exchange interaction between the localized magnetic impurity ions and the delocalized charge carriers has been accounted via mean-field theory with the inclusion of a modified Brillouin function. The enhancement of the GZS, and in turn, the effective g…
The dependence of the excitonic photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) on the tilt angle of an applied magnetic field is studied. Starting from a four-band Hamiltonian we construct a theory which quantitatively reproduces the available experimental PL spectra for perpendicular and in-plane magnetic fields. In the presence of a tilted magnetic field, we demonstrate that the dark exciton PL peaks brighten due to the in-plane component of the magnetic field and split for light with different circular polarization as a consequence of the perpendicular …
Transition-metal dichalcogenides can be easily produced as atomically thin sheets, exhibiting the possibility to optically polarize and read out the valley pseudospin of extremely stable excitonic quasiparticles present in these 2D semiconductors. Here, we investigate a monolayer of tungsten disulphide in high magnetic fields up to 30\,T via photoluminescence spectroscopy at low temperatures. The valley degeneracy is lifted for all optical features, particularly for excitons, singlet and triplet trions, for which we determine the g factor separately. While the observation of a diamagnetic shif…
