We give a new and constructive proof of the existence of global-in-time weak solutions of the 3-dimensional incompressible semi-geostrophic equations (SG) in geostrophic coordinates, for arbitrary initial measures with compact support. This new proof, based on semi-discrete optimal transport techniques, works by characterising discrete solutions of SG in geostrophic coordinates in terms of trajectories satisfying an ordinary differential equation. It is advantageous in its simplicity and its explicit relation to Eulerian coordinates through the use of Laguerre tessellations. Using our method, we obtain improved time-regularity for a large class of discrete initial measures, and we compute explicitly two discrete solutions. The method naturally gives rise to an efficient numerical method, which we illustrate by presenting simulations of a 2-dimensional semi-geostrophic flow in geostrophic coordinates generated using a numerical solver for the semi-discrete optimal transport problem coupled with an ordinary differential equation solver.
In this article I study Hölder regularity for solutions of a transport equation based in the dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation. Following a recent idea of A. Kiselev and F. Nazarov, I will use the molecular characterization of local Hardy spaces in order to obtain information on Hölder regularity of such solutions. This will be done by following the evolution of molecules in a backward equation.
We prove short time existence and uniqueness of smooth solutions ( in $C^{k+2,α}$ with $k\geq 2$) to the 2-D semi-geostrophic system and semi-geostrophic shallow water system with variable Coriolis parameter $f$ and periodic boundary conditions, under the natural convexity condition on the initial data. The dual space used in analysis of the semi-geostrophic system with constant $f$ does not exist for the variable Coriolis parameter case, and we develop a time-stepping procedure to overcome this difficulty.
This work gathers new results concerning the semi-geostrophic equations: existence and stability of measure valued solutions, existence and uniqueness of solutions under certain continuity conditions for the density, convergence to the incompressible Euler equations. Meanwhile, a general technique to prove uniqueness of sufficiently smooth solutions to non-linearly coupled system is introduced, using optimal transportation.
The semi-geostrophic equations have attracted the attention of the physical and mathematical communities since the work of Hoskins in the 1970s owing to their ability to model the formation of fronts in rotation-dominated flows, and also to their connection with optimal transport theory. In this paper, we study an active scalar equation, whose activity is determined by way of a Neumann-to-Dirichlet map associated to a fully nonlinear second-order Neumann boundary value problem on the infinite strip $\mathbb{R}^{2}\times(0,1)$, that models a semi-geostrophic flow in regime of constant potential…
The semi-geostrophic system is widely used in the modelling of large-scale atmospheric flows. In this paper, we prove existence of solutions of the incompressible semi-geostrophic equations in a fully three-dimensional domain with a free upper boundary condition. We show that, using methods similar to those introduced in the pioneering work of Benamou and Brenier, who analysed the same system but with a rigid boundary condition, we can prove the existence of solutions for the incompressible free boundary problem. The proof is based on optimal transport results as well as the analysis of Hamilt…
A stochastic version of the two-layer quasi-geostrophic model (2LQG) with multiplicative transport noise is analysed. This popular intermediate complexity model describes large scale atmosphere and ocean dynamics at the mid-latitudes. The transport noise, which acts on both layers, accounts for the unresolved small scales. After establishing the well-posedness of the perturbed equations, we show that, under a suitable scaling of the noise, the solutions converge to the deterministic 2LQG model with enhanced dissipation. Moreover, these solutions converge to the deterministic stationary ones on…

In this paper, we study transport equations with nonlocal velocity fields with rough initial data. We address the global existence of weak solutions of an one dimensional model of the surface quasi-geostrophic equation and the incompressible porous media equation, and one dimensional and $n$ dimensional models of the dissipative quasi-geostrophic equations and the dissipative incompressible porous media equation.
The semi-geostrophic equations are used widely in the modelling of large-scale atmospheric flows. In this note, we prove the global existence of weak solutions of the incompressible semi-geostrophic equations, in geostrophic coordinates, in a three-dimensional domain with a free upper boundary. The proof, based on an energy minimisation argument originally inspired by Cullen's Stability Principle, uses optimal transport results as well as the analysis of Hamiltonian ODEs in spaces of probability measures as studied by Ambrosio and Gangbo. We also give a general formulation of Cullen's Stabilit…
In this paper, the authors show the existence of global in time classical solutions to the 3D quasi-geostrophic system with Ekman pumping for any smooth initial value (possibly large). This system couples an inviscid transport equation in $\mathbb{R}^3_+$ with an equation on the boundary satisfied by the trace. The proof combines the De Giorgi regularization effect on the boundary $z=0$ -similar to the so called surface quasi-geostrophic equation- with Beale-Kato-Majda techniques to propagate regularity for $z>0$. A potential theory argument is used to strengthen the regularization effect on t…
It is well known, by now, that the three-dimensional non-viscous planetary geostrophic model, with vertical hydrostatic balance and horizontal Rayleigh friction, coupled to the heat diffusion and transport, is mathematically ill-posed. This is because the no-normal flow physical boundary condition implicitly produces an additional boundary condition for the temperature at the literal boundary. This additional boundary condition is different, because of the Coriolis forcing term, than the no heat flux physical boundary condition. Consequently, the second order parabolic heat equation is over de…
We consider the $2$D dissipative quasi-geostrophic equation with the time periodic external force and prove the existence of a unique time periodic solution in the case of the supercritical dissipation. In this case, the smoothing effect of the semigroup generated by the dissipation term is too weak to control the nonlinearity in the Duhamel term of the correponding integral equation. In this paper, we give a new approach which does not depend on the contraction mapping principle for the integral equation.
The fully compressible semi-geostrophic system is widely used in the modelling of large-scale atmospheric flows. In this paper, we prove rigorously the existence of weak Lagrangian solutions of this system, formulated in the original physical coordinates. In addition, we provide an alternative proof of the earlier result on the existence of weak solutions of this system expressed in the so-called geostrophic, or dual, coordinates. The proofs are based on the optimal transport formulation of the problem and on recent general results concerning transport problems posed in the Wasserstein space o…
Geophysicists have studied 3D Quasi-Geostrophic systems extensively. These systems describe stratified flows in the atmosphere on a large time scale and are widely used for forecasting atmospheric circulation. They couple an inviscid transport equation in $\mathbb{R}_{+}\timesΩ$ with an equation on the boundary satisfied by the trace, where $Ω$ is either $2D$ torus or a bounded convex domain in $\mathbb{R}^2$. In this paper, we show the existence of global in time weak solutions to a family of singular 3D quasi-geostrophic systems with Ekman pumping, where the background density profile degene…
We prove the existence of local-in-time smooth solutions of the incompressible semi-geostrophic equations expressed in Eulerian co-ordinates in 3-dimensional smooth bounded simply-connected domains. Our solutions adhere to Cullen's Stability Principle in that the geopotential is guaranteed to be a convex map for all times of its existence. We achieve our results by appealing to the theory of so-called div-curl systems (or Hodge systems), making use of recent results of Wang, which yield useful estimates on the ageostrophic velocity field. To our knowledge, this work constitutes the first time …
We consider a class of steady solutions of the semi-geostrophic equations on $\mathbb{R}^3$ and derive the linearised dynamics around those solutions. The linear PDE which governs perturbations around those steady states is a transport equation featuring a pseudo-differential operator of order 0. We study well-posedness of this equation in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^3;\mathbb{R}^3)$ introducing a representation formula for the solutions, and extend the result to the space of tempered distributions on $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. We investigate stability of the steady solutions by looking at plane wave solutions of …
We are concerned with the existence of periodic travelling-wave solutions for the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (gSQG) equation(including incompressible Euler equation), known as von Kármán vortex street. These solutions are of $C^1$ type, and are obtained by studying a semilinear problem on an infinite strip whose width equals to the period. By a variational characterization of solutions, we also show the relationship between vortex size, travelling speed and street structure. In particular, the vortices with positive and negative intensity have equal or unequal scaling size in our co…
We define various notions of Lagrangian solution in physical space for 3-d incompressible geostrophic system with free upper boudary under different conditions for initial data, then prove their existence via the minimization with respect to a geostrophic functional. As a byproduct of our proof,we obtain the existence of measure-valued dual space solutions when the initial measure $ν_0\in\mathcal{P}_2(\mathbf{R}^3)$ and is supported on $\{-\frac{1}δ\leq x_3\leq-δ\}$
The present article is devoted to the 3D dissipative quasi-geostrophic system (QG). This system can be obtained as limit model of the Primitive Equations in the asymptotics of strong rotation and stratification, and involves a non-radial, non-local, homogeneous pseudo-differential operator of order 2 denoted by $Γ$ (and whose semigroup kernel reaches negative values). After a refined study of the non-local part of $Γ$, we prove apriori estimates (in the general L^p setting) for the 3D QG-model. The main difficulty of this article is to study the commutator of $Γ$ with a Lagrangian change of va…
We prove the global existence of classical solutions to a class of forced drift-diffusion equations with $L^2$ initial data and divergence free drift velocity $\{u^ν\}_{ν_\ge0}\subset L^\infty_t BMO^{-1}_x$, and we obtain strong convergence of solutions as the viscosity $ν$ vanishes. We then apply our results to a family of active scalar equations which includes the three dimensional magneto-geostrophic $\{$MG$^ν\}_{ν\ge0}$ equation that has been proposed by Moffatt in the context of magnetostrophic turbulence in the Earth's fluid core. We prove the existence of a compact global attractor $\{\…
We prove the well posedness: global existence, uniqueness and regularity of the solutions, of a class of d-dimensional fractional stochastic active scalar equations. This class includes the stochastic, dD-quasi-geostrophic equation, $ d\geq 1$, fractional Burgers equation on the circle, fractional nonlocal transport equation and the 2D-fractional vorticity Navier-Stokes equation. We consider the multiplicative noise with locally Lipschitz diffusion term in both, the free and no free divergence modes. The random noise is given by an $Q-$Wiener process with the covariance $Q$ being either of fin…
We study the long time behavior of the solutions to the 2D stochastic quasi-geostrophic equation on $\mathbb{T}^2$ driven by additive noise and real linear multiplicative noise in the subcritical case (i.e. $α>1/2$) by proving the existence of a random attractor. The key point for the proof is the exponential decay of the $L^p$-norm and a boot-strapping argument. The upper semicontinuity of random attractors is also established. Moreover, if the viscosity constant is large enough, the system has a trivial random attractor.
Given $k:\mathbb{R}^n\setminus\{0\} \to \mathbb{R}^n$ a kernel of class $C^2$ and homogeneous of degree $1-n$, we prove existence and uniqueness of Hölder regular solutions for some non-linear transport equations with velocity fields given by convolution of the density with $k$. The Aggregation, the 3D quasi geostrophic, and the 2D Euler equations can be recovered for particular choices of $k$.

In this paper, we present a new and elementary proof of the local existence and uniqueness of the classical solution to the Cauchy problem of the two-dimensional generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation via the method of the contraction mapping principle. Also, same result holds true for a kind of transport equation with nonlocal velocity via the method of the contraction mapping principle.
We establish a connection between Optimal Transport Theory and classical Convection Theory for geophysical flows. Our starting point is the model designed few years ago by Angenent, Haker and Tannenbaum to solve some Optimal Transport problems. This model can be seen as a generalization of the Darcy-Boussinesq equations, which is a degenerate version of the Navier-Stokes-Boussinesq (NSB) equations. In a unified framework, we relate different variants of the NSB equations (in particular what we call the generalized Hydrostatic-Boussinesq equations) to various models involving Optimal Transport …
The generalized surface quasi-geostrophic (GSQG) equations are transport equations for an active scalar that depend on a parameter $0<α\le 2$. Special cases are the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations ($α= 2$) and the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equations ($α= 1$). We derive contour-dynamics equations for a class of two-front solutions of the GSQG equations when the fronts are a graph. Scalar reductions of these equations include ones that describe a single front in the presence of a rigid, flat boundary. We use the contour dynamics equations to determine the linearized stabilit…
We examine the regularity of weak solutions of quasi-geostrophic (QG) type equations with supercritical ($α<1/2$) dissipation $(-Δ)^α$. This study is motivated by a recent work of Caffarelli and Vasseur, in which they study the global regularity issue for the critical ($α= 1/2$) QG equation \cite{CV}. Their approach successively increases the regularity levels of Leray-Hopf weak solutions: from $L^2$ to $L^\infty$, from $L^\infty$ to Hölder ($C^δ$, $δ>0$), and from Hölder to classical solutions. In the supercritical case, Leray-Hopf weak solutions can still be shown to be $L^\infty$, but it do…
The quasi-geostrophic equation or the Euler equation with dissipation studied in the present paper is a simplified form of the atmospheric circulation model introduced by Charney and DeVore [J. Atmos. Sci. 36(1979), 1205-1216] on the existence of multiple steady states to the understanding of the persistence of atmospheric blocking. The fluid motion defined by the equation is driven by a zonal thermal forcing and an Ekman friction forcing measured by $κ>0$. It is proved that the steady-state solution is unique for $κ>1$ while multiple steady-state solutions exist for $κ<κ_{crit}$ with respect …
We study patch solutions of a family of transport equations given by a parameter $α$, $0< α<2$, with the cases $α=0$ and $α=1$ corresponding to the Euler and the surface quasi-geostrophic equations respectively. In this paper, using several new cancellations, we provide the following new results. First, we prove local well-posedness for $H^{2}$ patches in the half-space setting for $0<α< 1/3$, allowing self-intersection with the fixed boundary. Furthermore, we are able to extend the range of $α$ for which finite time singularities have been shown in \cite{KYZ} and \cite{KRYZ}. Second, we estab…
In this work we study the nonlocal transport equation derived recently by Steinerberger when studying how the distribution of roots of a polynomial behaves under iterated differentation of the function. In particular, we study the well-posedness of the equation, establish some qualitative properties of the solution and give conditions ensuring the global existence of both weak and strong solutions. Finally, we present a link between the equation obtained by Steinerberger and a one-dimensional model of the surface quasi-geostrophic equation used by Chae, Córdoba, Córdoba and Fontelos.
Explicit energy-transport equations for the spinorial carrier transport in ferromagnetic semiconductors are calculated from a general spin energy-transport system that was derived by Ben Abdallah and El Hajj from a spinorial Boltzmann equation. The novelty of our approach are the simplifying assumptions leading to explicit models which extend both spin drift-diffusion and semiclassical energy-transport equations. The explicit models allow us to examine the interplay between the spin and charge degrees of freedom. In particular, the monotonicity of the entropy (or free energy) and gradient esti…
We present some progress in the direction of determining the semiclassical limit of the Hoenberg-Kohn universal functional in Density Functional Theory for Coulomb systems. In particular we give a proof of the fact that for Bosonic systems with an arbitrary number of particles the limit is the multimarginal optimal transport problem with Coulomb cost and that the same holds for Fermionic systems with 2 or 3 particles. Comparisons with previous results are reported . The approach is based on some techniques from the optimal transportation theory.
In this paper we present a two-stage algorithm to solve the semi-discrete Optimal Transport Problem in the case where the support of the source measure is disconnected. We establish global linear convergence and local superlinear convergence. We also find convergence of the associated Laguerre cells in the vein of \cite{BansilKitagawa19b}.
Motivated by applications in quantitative photoacoustic imaging, we study inverse problems to a semilinear radiative transport equation (RTE) where we intend to reconstruct absorption coefficients in the equation from single and multiple internal data sets. We derive uniqueness and stability results for the inverse transport problem in the absence of scattering (in which case we also derive some explicit reconstruction methods) and in the presence of known scattering.
