For a $d$-dimensional smooth projective variety $X$ over the function field of a smooth variety $B$ over a field $k$ and for $i\ge 0$, we define a subgroup $CH^i(X)^{(0)}$ of $CH^i(X)$ and construct a "refined height pairing" \[CH^i(X)^{(0)}\times CH^{d+1-i}(X)^{(0)}\to CH^1(B)\] in the category of abelian groups modulo isogeny. For $i=1,d$, $CH^i(X)^{(0)}$ is the group of cycles numerically equivalent to $0$. This pairing relates to pairings defined by P. Schneider and A. Beilinson if $B$ is a curve, to a refined height defined by L. Moret-Bailly when $X$ is an abelian variety, and to a pairing with values in $H^2(B_{\bar k},\mathbf{Q}_l(1))$ defined by D. Rössler and T. Szamuely in general. We study it in detail when $i=1$.
We extend to the topological setting the classical constructions of the Abel-Jacobi mapping on homologically trivial algebraic cycles and the height pairing between two such cycles. We further interpret the height pairing between homologically trivial topological cycles (with disjoint support) as giving a lifting of their Abel-Jacobi images to the fiber of the Poincaré bundle, extending work of R. Hain in the algebraic setting. Part II of the current revision further explores the relationship between the topological height pairing and the classical height pairing in the case of algebraic cycle…
In algebraic geometry there is the notion of a height pairing of algebraic cycles, which lies at the confluence of arithmetic, Hodge theory and topology. After explaining a motivating example situation, we introduce new directions in this subject.
The purpose of this work is to generalize, in the context of 1-motives, the $p$-adic height pairings constructed by B. Mazur and J. Tate on abelian varieties. Following their approach, we define a global pairing between the rational points of a 1-motive and its dual. We also provide local pairings between zero-cycles and divisors on a curve, which is done by considering its Picard and Albanese 1-motives.
We prove that, as was conjectured by Spencer Bloch, the Hodge period of some limit Hodge structures equals the height pairing of algebraic cycles on the resolution of singularities of the singular fiber.
The aim of this paper is twofold. First, we study the asymptotics of the Néron height pairing between degree-zero divisors on a family of degenerating compact Riemann surfaces parametrized by an algebraic curve. We show that if the monodromy is unipotent the leading term of the asymptotics is controlled by the local non-archimedean Néron height pairing on the generic fiber of the family. Second, we prove a conjecture of R. Hain to the effect that the `height jumping divisor' related to the normal function $(2g-2)x-K$ on the moduli space $\mm_{g,1}$ of 1-pointed curves of genus $g \geq 2$ is ef…
For a smooth, projective complex variety, we introduce several mixed Hodge structures associated to higher algebraic cycles. Most notably, we introduce a mixed Hodge structure for a pair of higher cycles which are in the refined normalized complex and intersect properly. In a special case, this mixed Hodge structure is an oriented biextension, and its height agrees with the higher archimedean height pairing introduced in a previous paper by the first two authors. We also compute a non-trivial example of this height given by Bloch-Wigner dilogarithm function. Finally we study the variation of m…
We introduce a pairing on local intersection cohomology groups of variations of pure Hodge structure, which we call the asymptotic height pairing. Our original application of this pairing was to answer a question on the Ceresa cycle posed by R. Hain and D. Reed. (This question has since been answered independently by Hain.) Here we apply the pairing to show that a certain analytic line bundle, called the biextension line bundle, defined in terms of normal functions, always extends to any smooth partial compactification of the base. We show that the the pairing on intersection cohomology govern…
We prove that the p-adic height pairing of Nekovar, considered for algebraic curves, gives the p-adic height pairing of Coleman and Gross, defined using Coleman integration.
We describe an algorithm to compute the local component at p of the Coleman-Gross p-adic height pairing on divisors on hyperelliptic curves. As the height pairing is given in terms of a Coleman integral, we also provide new techniques to evaluate Coleman integrals of meromorphic differentials and present our algorithms as implemented in Sage.
We prove that for abelian varieties with semistable ordinary reduction the p-adic Mazur-Tate height pairing is induced by the unit root splitting of the Hodge filtration on the first deRham cohomology.
We establish a relation between intersection numbers of special cycles on a Shimura curve and special values of derivatives of metaplectic Eisenstein series at a place of bad reduction where p-adic uniformization in the sense of Cherednik and Drinfeld holds. The result extends the one established by one of us (S. Kudla: Ann. of Math. 146 (1997)) for the archimedean place and for the non-archimedean places of good reduction. The bulk of the paper is concerned with the corresponding problem on the Drinfeld upper half plane (the formal scheme version).
Previously we gave a conjectural cohomological argument for the validity of the Riemann hypotheses for Hasse-Weil zeta functions. In the present note we sketch how the same cohomological formalism would imply the conjectured positivity properties of the height pairings of homologically trivial cycles.
In the first section of his seminal paper on height pairings, Beilinson constructed an $\ell$-adic height pairing for rational Chow groups of homologically trivial cycles of complementary codimension on smooth projective varieties over the function field of a curve over an algebraically closed field, and asked about an generalization to higher dimensional bases. In this paper we answer Beilinson's question by constructing a pairing for varieties defined over the function field of a smooth variety $B$ over an algebraically closed field, with values in the second $\ell$-adic cohomology group of …
We give a formula for the component at p of the p-adic height pairing of a divisor of degree 0 on a hyperelliptic curve. We use this to give a Chabauty-like method for finding p-adic approximations to p-integral points on such curves when the Mordell-Weil rank of the Jacobian equals the genus. In this case we get an explicit bound for the number of such p-integral points, and we are able to use the method in explicit computation. An important aspect of the method is that it only requires a basis of the Mordell-Weil group tensored with the rationals.
We study the Faltings height pairing of arithmetic Heegner divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to orthogonal groups. We compute the Archimedian contribution to the height pairing and derive a conjecture relating the total pairing to the central derivative of a Rankin L-function. We prove the conjecture in certain cases where the Shimura variety has dimension 0, 1, or 2. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the Gross-Zagier formula.
We give a direct proof that the Mazur-Tate and Coleman-Gross heights on elliptic curves coincide. The main ingredient is to extend the Coleman-Gross height to the case of divisors with non-disjoint support and, doing some $p$-adic analysis, show that, in particular, its component above $p$ gives, in the special case of an ordinary elliptic curve, the $p$-adic sigma function. We use this result to give a short proof of a theorem of Kim characterizing integral points on elliptic curves in some cases under weaker assumptions. As a further application, we give new formulas to compute double Colema…
We extend the result of a previous work to the case of curves with semi-stable reduction. In this case, one can replace Coleman integration by Vologodsky integration to extend the Coleman-Gross definition of a $p$-adic height pairing. we show that this pairing still equals the one defined by Nekovar.
We define a new canonical height pairing on the rational points of elliptic curves over global function fields which takes values in the multiplicative group of a completion of the function field. This height serves as an analogue of both the classical Neron-Tate height and analytic p-adic heights. Our main result is that under some general hypotheses this pairing is non-degenerate.
We extend results of Cogolludo-Agustin and Libgober relating the Alexander polynomial of a plane curve $C$ with the Mordell--Weil rank of certain isotrivial families of jacobians over $\mathbf{P}^2$ of discriminant $C$. In the second part we introduce a height pairing on the $(2,3,6)$ quasi-toric decompositions of a plane curve. We use this pairing and the results in the first part of the paper to construct a pair of degree 12 curves with 30 cusps and Alexander polynomial $t^2-t+1$, but with distinct height pairing. We use the height pairing to show that these curves from a Zariski pair.
We study the interplay between canonical heights and endomorphisms of an abelian variety $A$ over a number field $k$. In particular we show that whenever the ring of endomorphisms defined over $k$ is strictly larger than $\Z$ there will be $\Q$-linear relations among the values of a canonical height-pairing evaluated at a basis modulo torsion of $A(k)$.
In this note, we show how the classical Hodge index theorem implies the Hodge index conjecture of Beilinson for height pairing of homologically trivial codimension two cycles over function field of characteristic 0. Such an index conjecture has been used in our paper on Gross-Schoen cycles to deduce the Bogomolov conjecture and a lower bound for Hodge class (or Faltings height) from some conjectures about metrized graphs which have just been recently proved by Zubeyir Cinkir.
Working over various graded Lie algebras and in arbitrary dimension, we express scattering diagrams and theta functions in terms of counts of tropical curves/disks, weighted by multiplicities given in terms of iterated Lie brackets. Over the tropical vertex group, our tropical curve counts are known to give certain descendant log Gromov-Witten invariants. Working over the quantum torus algebra yields theta functions for quantum cluster varieties, and our tropical description sets up for geometric interpretations of these. As an immediate application, we prove the quantum Frobenius conjecture o…
In this paper, we formulate and prove a duality for cohomology of curves over perfect fields of positive characteristic with coefficients in Neron models of abelian varieties. This is a global function field version of the author's previous work on local duality and Grothendieck's duality conjecture. It generalizes the perfectness of the Cassels-Tate pairing in the finite base field case. The proof uses the local duality mentioned above, Artin-Milne's global finite flat duality, the non-degeneracy of the height pairing and finiteness of crystalline cohomology. All these ingredients are organiz…
Generalizing work of Gross--Zagier and Schofer on singular moduli, we study the CM values of regularized theta lifts of harmonic Whittaker forms. We compute the archimedian part of the height pairing of arithmetic special divisors and CM cycles on Shimura varieties associated to certain quadratic spaces over an arbitrary totally real base field. As a special case, we obtain an explicit formula for the norms of the CM values of those meromorphic modular forms arising as regularized theta lifts of holomorphic Whittaker forms.
Let K be a finitely generated field over Q, and A an abelian variety over K. Let <, > : A(K^a) x A(K^a) --> R be an arithmetic height pairing on A, where K^a is the algebric closure of K. For x_1,..., x_l \in A(K^a), we denote det(<x_i, x_j>) by d(x_1,..., x_l). Let G be a subgroup of finite rank in A(K^a), and X a subvariety of A_{K^a}. Fix a basis {g_1,..., g_n} of G_Q. In this note, we prove a generalization of Poonen's theorem: If the set {x \in X(K^a) | d(g_1,..., g_n, x) <= e} is Zariski dense in X for every positive number e, then X is a translation of an abelian subvariety by an elemen…
