We study the interplay between canonical heights and endomorphisms of an abelian variety $A$ over a number field $k$. In particular we show that whenever the ring of endomorphisms defined over $k$ is strictly larger than $\Z$ there will be $\Q$-linear relations among the values of a canonical height-pairing evaluated at a basis modulo torsion of $A(k)$.
We define an "ample canonical height" for an endomorphism on a projective variety, which is essentially a generalization of the canonical heights for polarized endomorphisms introduced by Call--Silverman. We formulate a dynamical analogue of the Northcott finiteness theorem for ample canonical heights as a conjecture, and prove it for endomorphisms on varieties of small Picard numbers, abelian varieties, and surfaces. As applications, for the endomorphisms which satisfy the conjecture, we show the non-density of the set of preperiodic points over a fixed number field, and obtain a dynamical Mo…
We introduce a new canonical height function for Jordan blocks of small eigenvalues for endomorphisms on smooth projective varieties over a number field. We prove that under an assumption on the eigenvalues of the endomorphism on the group of divisors modulo numerical equivalence, the arithmetic degree at a rational point is equal to one if and only if it is preperiodic under the endomorphism.
We provide an explicit formula on the growth rate of ample heights of rational points under iteration of endomorphisms on smooth projective varieties over number fields. As an application, we give a positive answer to a problem of Dynamical Mordell-Lang type for pairs of étale endomorphisms, which is a variant of the original one stated by Bell, Ghioca, and Tucker in their monograph.
The Kawaguchi--Silverman conjecture predicts that if $f\colon X \dashrightarrow X$ is a dominant rational-self map of a projective variety over $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$, and $P$ is a $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$-point of $X$ with Zariski-dense orbit, then the dynamical and arithmetic degrees of $f$ coincide: $λ_1(f) = α_f(P)$. We prove this conjecture in several higher-dimensional settings, including all endomorphisms of non-uniruled smooth projective threefolds with degree larger than $1$, and all endomorphisms of hyper-Kähler varieties in any dimension. In the latter case, we construct a canonical…
We define a new canonical height pairing on the rational points of elliptic curves over global function fields which takes values in the multiplicative group of a completion of the function field. This height serves as an analogue of both the classical Neron-Tate height and analytic p-adic heights. Our main result is that under some general hypotheses this pairing is non-degenerate.
This paper is the sequel of our paper "Arithmetic height functions over finitely generated fields" (cf. math.NT/9809016). In this paper, we define the canonical height of subvarieties of an abelian variety over a finitely generated field over Q. We also prove that the canonical height of a subvariety is zero if and only if it is a translation of an abelian subvariety by a torsion point.
We construct canonical heights of subvarieties for dynamical system of several morphisms associated with line bundles defined over a number field, and study some of their properties. We also construct invariant currents for such systems over $\mathbb{C}$.
An expository lecture on the analogy between the subjects of the title. Delivered at the International Conference on Number Theory at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study in December 1997.
Let A be an abelian variety defined over a number field K, and consider the canonical height function attached to a symmetric ample line bundle L on A. We prove that there is a positive lower bound C (depending on A, K, and L) for the canonical height of non-torsion points on A defined over the maximal abelian extension K^ab of K.
We prove, for the canonical height defined by Silverman [15] on monomial maps, the existence of effective lower bounds for heights of points with Zariski dense orbit, for cases with endomorphisms induced by matrices with real Jordan form.
For several applications in the arithmetic of abelian varieties it is important to compute canonical heights. Following Faltings and Hriljac, we show how the canonical height on the Jacobian of a smooth projective curve can be computed using arithmetic intersection theory on a regular model of the curve in practice. In the case of hyperelliptic curves we present a complete algorithm that has been implemented in Magma. Several examples are computed and the behavior of the running time is discussed.
Let $f: \mathbb{A}^2 \to \mathbb{A}^2$ be a polynomial automorphism of dynamical degree $δ\geq 2$ over a number field $K$. (This is equivalent to say that $f$ is a polynomial automorphism that is not triangularizable.) Then we construct canonical height functions defined on $\mathbb{A}^2(\bar{K})$ associated with $f$. These functions satisfy the Northcott finiteness property, and an $\bar{K}$-valued point on $\mathbb{A}^2(\bar{K})$ is $f$-periodic if and only if its height is zero. As an application of canonical height functions, we give an estimate on the number of points with bounded height …
Given an elliptic curve E over a function field K=Q(T_1,...,T_n), we study the behavior of the canonical height ^h_(E_w) of the specialized elliptic curve E_w with respect to the height of w in Q^n. In this paper, we prove that there exists a uniform non-zero lower bound for the average of the quotient ^h_(E_w)(P_w)/h(w) for all non-torsion P in E(K).
In this paper, we discuss a generalization of log canonical singularities in the non-$\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein setting. We prove that if a normal complex projective variety has a non-invertible polarized endomorphism, then it has log canonical singularities in our sense. As a corollary, we give an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Broustet and Höring.
In an earlier paper by the first author, an argument for the nonexistence of canonical vector heights on K3 surfaces of Picard number three was given, based on an explicit surface that was not proved to have Picard number three. In this paper, we fill the gap in the argument by redoing the computations for another explicit surface for which we prove that the Picard number equals three. The conclusion remains unchanged.
Let X be a normal variety such that $K_X$ is Q-Cartier, and let $f: X \rightarrow X$ be a finite surjective morphism of degree at least two. We establish a close relation between the irreducible components of the locus of singularities that are not log-canonical and the dynamics of the endomorphism f. As a consequence we prove that if X is projective and f polarised, then X has at most log-canonical singularities.
Let f: A^N \to A^N be a regular polynomial automorphism defined over a number field K. For each place v of K, we construct the v-adic Green functions G_{f,v} and G_{f^{-1},v} (i.e., the v-adic canonical height functions) for f and f^{-1}. Next we introduce for f the notion of good reduction at v, and using this notion, we show that the sum of v-adic Green functions over all v gives rise to a canonical height function for f that satisfies the Northcott-type finiteness property. Using previous results, we recover results on arithmetic properties of f-periodic points and non f-periodic points. We…
Let K be a number field and let E/K be an elliptic curve. If E has complex multiplication, we show that there is a positive lower bound for the canonical height of non-torsion points on E defined over the maximal abelian extension K^ab of K. This is analogous to results of Amoroso-Dvornicich and Amoroso-Zannier for the multiplicative group. We also show that if E has non-integral j-invariant (so that in particular E does not have complex multiplication), then there exists C > 0 such that there are only finitely many points P in E(K^ab) of canonical height less than C. This strengthens a result…
Canonical heights and Arakelov geometry on semi-abelian varieties. In this paper, we propose a construction of the canonical heights on an extension of an abelian variety by the multiplicative group, in the framework of Arakelov geometry. These canonical heights are the sum of some height coming from the abelian variety and something we call a relative height. We finally give some complements about the points whose relative height is zero.
We prove a structure theorem for non-isomorphic endomorphisms of weak Q-Fano threefolds, or more generally for threefolds with big anti-canonical divisor. Also provided is a criterion for a fibred rationally connected threefold to be rational. As a consequence, we show (without using the classification) that every smooth Fano threefold having a non-isomorphic surjective endomorphism is rational.
We study families of varieties endowed with polarized canonical eigensystems of several maps, inducing canonical heights on the dominating variety as well as on the "good" fibers of the family. We show explicitely the dependence on the parameter for global and local canonical heights defined by Kawaguchi when the fibers change, extending previous works of J. Silverman and others. Finally, fixing an absolute value $v \in K$ and a variety $V/K$, we descript the Kawaguchi`s canonical local height $\hatλ_{V,E,\mathcal{Q},}(.,v)$ as an intersection number, provided that the polarized system $(V,\ma…
We give a mathematical structure on an arithmetic surface, that has algebraic meanings over finite places and can estimate the canonical norm for a relative differential form on the arithmetic surface. This will give a lower bound for the canonical norm for a relative differential form on an arithmetic surface, which proves a Height Inequality on the arithmetic surface.
We extend the Faltings modular heights of abelian varieties to general arithmetic varieties and show direct relations with the Kahler-Einstein geometry, the Minimal Model Program, heights of Bost and Zhang, and give some applications. Along the way, we propose arithmetic Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture, an equivalence of a purely arithmetic property of variety and its metrical property, and partially confirm it.
We present a dynamical proof of the well-known fact that the Neron-Tate canonical height (and its local counterpart) takes rational values at points of an elliptic curve over a function field k of transcendence degree 1 over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic 0. More generally, we investigate the mechanism for which the local canonical height for a rational function f defined over k can take irrational values (at points in a local completion of k), providing examples in all degrees greater than 1. Building on Kiwi's classification of non-archimedean Julia sets for quadratic maps…
We construct a quasi-canonical lifting of a $K3$ surface of finite height over a finite field of characteristic $p\geq3$. Such results are previously obtained by Nygaard-Ogus when $p\geq5$. For this purpose, we use the display-theoretic deformation theory developed by Langer, Zink, and Lau. We study the display structure of the crystalline cohomology of deformations of a $K3$ surface of finite height in terms of the Dieudonné display of the enlarged formal Brauer group.
Let $S$ be the spectrum of a complete discrete valuation ring with fraction field of characteristic 0 and perfect residue field of characteristic $p\geq 3$. Let $G$ be a truncated Barsotti-Tate group of level 1 over $S$. If ``$G$ is not too supersingular'', a condition that will be explicitly expressed in terms of the valuation of a certain determinant, we prove that we can canonically lift the kernel of the Frobenius endomorphism of its special fibre to a subgroup scheme of $G$, finite and flat over $S$. We call it the canonical subgroup of $G$.
Let $K$ be a number field and let $C/K$ be a curve of genus 2 with Jacobian variety $J$. In this paper, we study the canonical height $\hat{h} \colon J(K) \to \mathbb R$. More specifically, we consider the following two problems, which are important in applications: (1) for a given $P \in J(K)$, compute $\hat{h}(P)$ efficiently; (2) for a given bound $B > 0$, find all $P \in J(K)$ with $\hat{h}(P) \le B$. We develop an algorithm running in polynomial time (and fast in practice) to deal with the first problem. Regarding the second problem, we show how one can tweak the naive height $h$ that is …
Let $X$ be a normal projective variety admitting a polarized or int-amplified endomorphism $f$. We list up characteristic properties of such an endomorphism and classify such a variety from the aspects of its singularity, anti-canonical divisor and Kodaira dimension. Then we run the equivariant minimal model program with respect to not just the single $f$ but also the monoid $SEnd(X)$ of all surjective endomorphisms of $X$, up to finite-index. Several applications are given. We also give both algebraic and geometric characterizations of toric varieties via polarized endomorphisms.
Motivated by an example, due to Voisin, of a smooth simply-connected projective variety with trivial canonical class and cyclic Picard group, admitting a meromorphic endomorphism of high degree, we study meromorphic fibrations on certain varieties with trivial canonical class. We show (theorem 2.1) that any nontrivial meromorphic fibration of a variety with trivial canonical class and cyclic Picard group is in varieties of general type. Therefore, Voisin's endomorphism cannot preserve a fibration, at least in the generic case. As this example is symplectic, we study meromorphic fibrations on s…
We prove a uniform version of the Dynamical Mordell-Lang Conjecture for étale maps; also, we obtain a gap result for the growth rate of heights of points in an orbit along an arbitrary endomorphism of a quasiprojective variety defined over a number field. More precisely, for our first result, we assume $X$ is a quasi-projective variety defined over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$, endowed with the action of an étale endomorphism $Φ$, and $f\colon X\to Y$ is a morphism with $Y$ a quasi-projective variety defined over $K$. Then for any $x\in X(K)$, if for each $y\in Y(K)$, the set $S_y:=\{n\in…
Let X be an abelian scheme over a base variety S with endomorphism algebra D. We prove that the relative Chow motive R(X/S) has a canonical decomposition as a direct sum of motives R^(ξ)$ where ξruns over an explicitly determined finite set of irreducible representations of the group D^{opp,*}, such that R^(ξ), seen as a functor from Chow motives to D^{\opp,*}-representations, is ξ-isotypic. Our decomposition refines the motivic decomposition of Deninger and Murre, as well as Beauville's decomposition of the Chow group. The second main result is that we construct a canonical generalized motivi…
Let $X$ be a projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of arbitrary characteristic $p \ge 0$. A surjective endomorphism $f$ of $X$ is $q$-polarized if $f^\ast H \sim qH$ for some ample Cartier divisor $H$ and integer $q > 1$. Suppose $f$ is separable and $X$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein and normal. We show that the anti-canonical divisor $-K_X$ is numerically equivalent to an effective $\mathbb{Q}$-Cartier divisor, strengthening slightly the conclusion of Boucksom, de Fernex and Favre (Theorem C) and also covering singular varieties over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary…
This paper deals with computing the global dimension of endomorphism rings of maximal Cohen--Macaulay (=MCM) modules over commutative rings. Several examples are computed. In particular, we determine the global spectra, that is, the sets of all possible finite global dimensions of endomorphism rings of MCM-modules, of the curve singularities of type $A_n$ for all $n$, $D_n$ for $n \leq 13$ and $E_{6,7,8}$ and compute the global dimensions of Leuschke's normalization chains for all ADE curves, as announced in [Dao-Faber-Ingalls]. Moreover, we determine the centre of an endomorphism ring of a MC…
In this paper we prove the following theorem. Let $f$ be a dominant endomorphism of a smooth projective surface over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$. If there is no nonconstant invariant rational function under $f$, then there exists a closed point whose orbit under $f$ is Zariski dense. This result gives us a positive answer to the Zariski dense orbit conjecture proposed by Medvedev and Scanlon, by Amerik, Bogomolov and Rovinsky, and by Zhang, for endomorphisms of smooth projective surfaces. Moreover, we define a new canonical topology on varieties over an algebraically cl…
