Structural symmetries in the storage ring of synchrotrons are intentionally created during the design phase of the magnetic lattices, but they are not considered in the design of control algorithms that stabilize the beam of accelerated particles. The choice of control algorithm, however, is limited by the speed requirements of the synchrotron. Standard control algorithms for synchrotrons are based on a singular value decomposition (SVD) of the orbit response matrix. SVD controllers neither exploit the structural symmetries nor exhibit any speed advantages. Based on the periodicity and the reflection properties of the betatron function, we show that these structural symmetries are inherited by the orbit response matrix. We show that the resulting block-circulant and centrosymmetric properties of the matrix can be used for different computationally efficient decompositions of the controller. We also address the case of broken symmetry due to odd placements of magnets and monitors. Our efficient decomposition could enable the use of more advanced control techniques for synchrotrons, such as control algorithms that require real-time optimization. These advanced control techniques could in turn increase the quality of research in synchrotron light sources.
We investigate influence on the storage ring beam dynamics of the coherent Synchrotron Radiation (SR) self fields produced by an electron bunch. We show that the maximum energy gain in the RF cavity must far exceed the energy loss of electrons due to the coherent SR.
Investigation of neutrino oscillations and rare meson decays are main physics goals of Project X. The successful physics outcome relies on the feasibility of high-intensity neutrino and meson (K+ and μ) beams. In order to meet this goal we propose accelerator system dominated by the synchrotrons (Option A) as a technologically easier and significantly more cost-effective alternative to the accelerator system dominated by the linear accelerators (Option B). The synchrotron-based accelerator system and its main components are outlined and the expected proton beam power for the neutrino and meson…
Generation of extreme bright coherent synchrotron radiation in a short wavelength range is of remarkable interest in the synchrotron light source community. In this paper, a novel technique is adopted to produce the coherent radiation which uses an angular dispersion to enhance the micro-bunch by a tiny amplitude of energy modulation. This scheme can be inserted in a long straight section of a storage ring. A lattice design of an extreme-low emittance storage ring with 3.5 GeV energy is presented in this paper, which employs a higher order achromat (HOA) concept. We show the design results for…
In an ideal accelerator, the single-particle dynamics can be decoupled into transverse motion -- the betatron oscillations -- and longitudinal motion -- the synchrotron oscillations. Chromatic and dispersive effects introduce a coupling between these dynamics, the so-called synchro-betatron coupling. We present an analysis of the fully coupled dynamics over a single synchrotron oscillation that leads to an averaged invariant with synchro-betatron coupling in a generic lattice. We apply this analysis to two problems: first, a toy lattice where the computations are analytically tractable, then a…
We reinvestigate the gravitational waves (GWs) induced by charged particles in storage rings. There are two major components in such GWs. One is the gravitational synchrotron radiation (GSR), i.e., the direct emission by the bending of the trajectory of a relativistic charged particle, much like the conventional electromagnetic synchrotron radiation (EMSR), albeit with characteristic difference in their radiation spectra. While the conventional EMSR spectrum peaks at the critical frequency, $ω_c=γ^3ω_0\ggω_0$, the spectrum of GSR peaks at the storage ring fundamental frequency $ω_0$, which is …
We calculate equilibrium emittances and damping times due to the emission of synchrotron radiation for coupled storage ring lattices by evaluating the projections of the commonly used synchrotron radiation integrals onto the normal modes of the coupled motion. Orbit distortion is included by calculating off-axis contributions to the radiation integrals. We provide explicit formulae for fast forward calculation, which have been implemented into the interactive lattice design code OPA.
Using calculations and mathematical modeling, we demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a synchrotron storage ring for neutral polar molecules. The lattice is a racetrack type 3.6 m in circumference consisting of two of 180-degree arcs, six bunchers, and two long straight sections. Each straight section contains two triplet focusing lenses and space for beam injection and experiments. The design also includes a matched injector and a linear decelerator. Up to 60 bunches can be loaded and simultaneously stored in the ring. The molecules are injected at 90 m/s but the velocity of the circul…
This contribution compiles the benefits of lattice symmetry in the context of closed orbit correction. A symmetric arrangement of BPMs and correctors results in structured orbit response matrices of Circulant or block Circulant type. These forms of matrices provide favorable properties in terms of computational complexity, information compression and interpretation of mathematical vector spaces of BPMs and correctors. For broken symmetries, a nearest-Circulant approximation is introduced and the practical advantages of symmetry exploitation are demonstrated with the help of simulations and exp…
In this Letter, I report on a novel scheme for beam stacking without any beam emittance dilution using a barrier rf system in synchrotrons. The general principle of the scheme called longitudinal phase-space coating, validation of the concept via multi-particle beam dynamics simulations applied to the Fermilab Recycler, and its experimental demonstration are presented. In addition, it has been shown and illustrated that the rf gymnastics involved in this scheme can be used in measuring the incoherent synchrotron tune spectrum of the beam in barrier buckets and in producing a clean hollow beam …
Turkish Accelerator Center) project is aimed to build an accelerator center in Turkey. The first step of the project is to construct IR-FEL facility. The second stage is to build a synchrotron radiation facility named TURKAY, which is the third generation synchrotron radiation light source that aimed to achieve high brilliance photon beam from low emittance electron beam at 3 GeV. The electron beam parameters highly depend on the magnetic lattice of the storage ring. In this paper a low emittance storage ring for TURKAY is proposed and beam dynamic properties of the magnetic lattice are invest…
Electron storage rings used for the production of synchrotron radiation (SR) have an output photon brightness that is limited by the equilibrium beam emittance. By using interleaved injection and ejection of bunches from a source with repetition rate greater than 1 kHz, we show that it is practicable to overcome this limit in rings of energy ~1 GeV. Sufficiently short kicker pulse lengths enable effective currents of many milliamperes, which can deliver a significant flux of diffraction-limited soft X-ray photons. Thus, either existing SR facilities may be adapted for non-equilibrium operation…
We study the modifications of synchrotron radiation of charges in a storage ring as they are cooled. The pair correlation lengths between the charges are manifest in the synchrotron radiation and coherence effects exist for wavelengths longer than the coherence lengths between the charges. Therefore the synchrotron radiation can be used as a diagnostic tool to determine the state (gas, liquid, crystal) of the charged plasma in the storage ring. We show also that the total power of the synchrotron radiation is enormously reduced for crystallized beams. This opens the possibility of accelerating…
In order to improve the stability of synchrotron radiation, we developed a new method of machine learning-based closed orbit feedback and piloted it in the storage ring of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF). In our experiments, not only can the machine learning-based closed orbit feedback carry out horizontal, vertical and RF frequency feedback simultaneously, but it also has better convergence and convergence speed than the traditional Slow Orbit Feed Back (SOFB) system. What's more, the residual values of the correctors' currents variations after correction can be almost igno…
At the Metrology Light Source (MLS), the compact electron storage ring of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) with a circumference of 48\,m, a specific operation mode with two stable closed orbits for stored electrons was realized by transverse resonance island buckets. One of these orbits is closing only after three turns. In combination with single-bunch operation, the new mode was applied for electron time-of-flight spectroscopy with an interval of the synchrotron radiation pulses which is three times the revolution period at the MLS of 160\,ns. The achievement is of significant…
In recent and future synchrotron radiation facilities, relativistic electron bunches with increasingly high charge density are needed for producing brilliant light at various wavelengths, from X-rays to terahertz. In such conditions, interaction of electrons bunches with their own emitted electromagnetic fields leads to instabilities and spontaneous formation of complex spatial structures. Understanding these instabilities is therefore key in most electron accelerators. However, investigations suffer from the lack of non-destructive recording tools for electron bunch shapes. In storage rings, …
We performed an analysis of coherence properties of the 4-th generation high-energy storage rings with emittance values of 10 pmrad. It is presently expected that a storage ring with these low emittance values will reach diffraction limit at hard X-rays. Simulations of coherence properties were performed with the XRT software and analytical approach for different photon energies from 500 eV to 50 keV. It was demonstrated that a minimum photon emittance (diffraction limit) reached at such storage rings is λ/2π. Using mode decomposition we showed that at the parameters of the storage ring consid…
A single electron circulating in a storage ring is a very peculiar object. Synchrotron radiation quantum fluctuation causes stohastic process in the synchrotron oscillation of an electron. The radiation from a undulator permits one to obtain discret moments of longitudional electron motion. Experiments with a single electron on on the VEPP-3 optical klystrons are described.
ANKA is a 2.5 GeV synchrotron radiation storage ring under construction at the Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe in Germany. The injector system will consist of a pre-injector with an end energy of 20 to 50 MeV and a 0.5 GeV booster synchrotron. In the following three different concepts for designing the booster synchrotron are compared.
Injection performance of storage ring is one of the important factors for the light efficiency and quality of Synchrotron Radiation Facility when it is in top-up mode. To evaluate the injection performance of storage ring at SSRF, we build a bunch-by-bunch position measuring system based on oscilloscope IOC. Accurate assessment of energy mismatching, distribution of residual oscillation and angle error of injection kickers can be achieved by this system.
The longitudinal dynamics of electron bunches with a large energy spread circulating in the storage rings with a small momentum compaction factor is considered. Also the structure of the longitudinal phase space is considered as well as its modification due to changes in the ring parameters. The response of an equilibrium area upon changes of the nonlinear momentum compaction factor is presented.
In present work we investigate the potential of a longitudinally focusing device to compress bunches passing an undulator for a synchrotron storage ring. If integrated into a storage ring similar to PETRAIII such device could potentially produce continuous $\sim$1ps pulses of photons in the $nm$ range with peak pulse powers of tens of GW. Even without operating in FEL saturation mode the longitudinal focusing can provide means to increase the brightness and shorten the photon pulse length.
In recent synchrotron radiation facilities, the use of short (picosecond) electron bunches is a powerful method for producing giant pulses of Terahertz Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (THz CSR). Here we report on the first direct observation of these pulse shapes with a few picoseconds resolution, and of their dynamics over a long time. We thus confirm in a very direct way the theories predicting an interplay between two physical processes. Below a critical bunch charge, we observe a train of identical THz pulses (a broadband Terahertz comb) stemming from the shortness of the electron bunches. …
Measuring the time structure of the storage ring on the sample spot inside the experimental hutch is a foundational step during the time-resolved experiments using the pulsed synchrotron X-rays with the time structure defined by the storage ring. In this work, the method of time-resolved X-ray excited optical luminescence was designed and implemented to do the measurement. This method is based on the principle of time-correlated single photon counting techniques. The measurement system consists of a spectrometer with a detector of photomultiplier tube, a timing system, a set of Nuclear Instrum…
The paper gives an overview of the particle dynamics in synchrotrons and storage rings. Both, transverse as well as the longitudinal plane are described in linear approximation. The main emphasis is to give an introduction into the basic concepts and to allow the reader to deduce the main parameters of the machine, based on some simple scaling laws.
We describe the construction and operation of an x-ray beam size monitor (xBSM), a device measuring $e^+$ and $e^-$ beam sizes in the CESR-TA storage ring using synchrotron radiation. The device can measure vertical beam sizes of $10-100~μ$m on a turn-by-turn, bunch-by-bunch basis at $e^\pm$ beam energies of $\sim2~$GeV. At such beam energies the xBSM images x-rays of $ε\approx$1-10$~$keV ($λ\approx 0.1-1$ nm) that emerge from a hard-bend magnet through a single- or multiple-slit (coded aperture) optical element onto an array of 32 InGaAs photodiodes with 50$~μ$m pitch. Beamlines and detectors…
Application of electron cooling at ion energies above a few GeV has been limited due to reduction of electron cooling efficiency with energy and difficulty in producing and accelerating a high-current high-quality electron beam. A high-current storage-ring electron cooler offers a solution to both of these problems by maintaining high cooling beam quality through naturally-occurring synchrotron radiation damping of the electron beam. However, the range of ion energies where storage-ring electron cooling can be used has been limited by low electron beam damping rates at low ion energies and hig…
Fast ion instability has been observed in the early commissioning and operation of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF) storage ring. In this paper, a weak-strong code is used to simulate the fast ion instability in SSRF storage ring. Various fill patterns and gas pressures are investigated. The results show that the mini-train fill patterns are very effective to suppress the growth of the fast ion instability.
HLS (Hefei Light Source) is a second generation synchrotron radiation source. After injected into the storage ring at energy of 200MeV, the electrons will be ramped to 800MeV. During ramping, the magnetic fields of the bend, quadruple and sextuple magnets are ramped up synchronously to keep the working point of the storage ring unchanged. This process is carefully controlled by HLS control system, which is built under EPICS. Several measures are taken to insure the synchronization and linearity of the ramping.
Precision experiments, such as the search for electric dipole moments of charged particles using radiofrequency spin rotators in storage rings, demand for maintaining the exact spin resonance condition for several thousand seconds. Synchrotron oscillations in the stored beam modulate the spin tune of off-central particles, moving it off the perfect resonance condition set for central particles on the reference orbit. Here we report an analytic description of how synchrotron oscillations lead to non-exponential decoherence of the radiofrequency resonance driven up-down spin rotations. This non-…
In the Brazilian synchrotron light source, we observed that modulating the phase of the accelerating fields at approximately twice the synchrotron frequency suppressed remarkably well a longitudinal coupled-bunch mode of the beam driven by a higher order mode (HOM) in one of the radiofrequency (RF) cavities. In this work, we present the results of a set of systematic measurements, in single and multibunch mode, aimed at characterizing the effects of RF phase modulation on the beam. We compare those experiments with the results of tracking simulations and of a theoretical model in which Landau …
Generally, turn-to-turn fluctuations of synchrotron radiation power in a storage ring depend on the 6D phase-space distribution of the electron bunch. This effect is related to the interference of fields radiated by different electrons. Changes in the relative electron positions and velocities inside the bunch result in fluctuations in the total emitted energy per pass in a synchrotron radiation source. This effect has been previously described assuming constant and equal electron velocities before entering the synchrotron radiation source. In this paper, we present a generalized formula for t…
We show how, beginning with the Fokker--Planck equation for electrons emitting synchrotron radiation in a storage ring, the corresponding equation for spin motion can be constructed. This is an equation of the Bloch type for the polarisation density.
Synchrotron radiation emitted by electrons passing through an undulator placed in a storage ring is decomposed in coherent modes. The case of ultimate storage rings where the electron emittance is comparable to the emittance of the photon fan is analyzed by means of the cross spectral density and the coherent mode spectrum. The proposed method permits naturally the statistical analysis and propagation of the cross spectral density along the beamline optics. The coherence properties of the X-ray beam at any point of the beamline are completely given in terms of the eigenvalues and coherent mode…
With the recently emerging global interest in building a next generation of circular electron-positron colliders to study the properties of the Higgs boson, and other important topics in particle physics at ultra-high beam energies, it is also important to pursue the possibility of implementing polarized beams at this energy scale. It is therefore necessary to set up simulation tools to evaluate the beam polarization at these ultra-high beam energies. In this paper, a Monte-Carlo simulation of the equilibrium beam polarization based on the Polymorphic Tracking Code(PTC) (Schmidt et al., 2002 […
I present some simple exactly solvable models of spin diffusion caused by synchrotron radiation noise in storage rings. I am able to use standard stochastic differential equation and Fokker-Planck methods and I thereby introduce, and exploit, the polarization density. This quantity obeys a linear evolution equation of the Bloch type, which is, like the Fokker-Planck equation, universal in the sense that it is independent of the state of the system. I also briefly consider Bloch equations for other local polarization quantities derived from the polarization density. One of the models chosen is …
In order to improve the quality and stability of synchrotron light, Hefei Light Source has a major upgrade. Higher accuracy is necessary for installation and alignment of the storage ring magnets. It is not necessarily essential that the magnets are positioned exactly. In fact, the aim is to adjust neighboring magnets with a high accuracy to one another; in other words, these neighboring magnets are positioned on a smoothing curve. The paper presents an attempt to develop a reliable smoothing method based on curve fitting of least squares and iteration according to the structure characteristic…
A new scheme for the two-dimensional cooling of ion beams in storage rings is suggested in which ions interact with a counterpropagating broad-band laser beam. The interaction region in the direction of the ion movement is much less then the wavelength of the ion betatron oscillations. The laser beam in the orbit plane has sharp flat edge directed to the ion beam and the width of the laser beam of the order of the ion beam width. Laser beam radial position is being displaced with some velocity at first from inside and then from outside to the ion beam and decreases both betatron and synchrotro…
We introduce a new application of measuring symplectic generators to characterize and control the linear betatron coupling in storage rings. From synchronized and consecutive BPM (Beam Position Monitor) turn-by-turn (TbT) readings, symplectic Lie generators describing the coupled linear dynamics are extracted. Four plane-crossing terms in the generators directly characterize the coupling between the horizontal and the vertical planes. Coupling control can be accomplished by utilizing the dependency of these plane-crossing terms on skew quadrupoles. The method has been successfully demonstrated…
To study the characteristics of synchrotron radiation in magnetic fields of accelerators first the author was necessary to obtain a continuous solutions of Hill's equation. For this purpose the gradient or the components of magnetic field were developed in a series. The same procedure is followed now in the case of storage rings. This approach proved to be interesting not only from the point of view of describing the motion of partiles in ordinary three-dimensional space but also in the fact that we get new differential equations. This brief review can be regarded as an introduction to the pro…
Indus-2 is a synchrotron radiation source which is operational at RRCAT, Indore; India. It is essentially pertinent in any synchrotron radiation facility to store the electron beam without beam loss. During the day to day operation of Indus-2 storage ring difficulty was being faced in accumulating higher beam current. After examining, it was found that the working point was shifting from its desired value during accumulation. For smooth beam accumulation, a fixed desired tune in both horizontal and vertical plane plays a great role in avoiding the beam loss via resonance process. This demanded…
We outline the design of beam experiments for the electron linac at the Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility and for the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA), based on synchrotron light emitted by the electrons in bend dipoles, detected with gated microchannel-plate photomultipliers (MCP-PMTs). The system can be used both for beam diagnostics (e.g., beam intensity with full dynamic range, turn-by-turn beam vibrations, etc.) and for scientific experiments, such as the direct observation of the time structure of the radiation emitted by single electrons in a storage r…
The effects of synchrotron radiation on particle motion in storage rings are discussed. In the absence of radiation, particle motion is symplectic, and the beam emittances are conserved. The inclusion of radiation effects in a classical approximation leads to emittance damping: expressions for the damping times are derived. Then, it is shown that quantum radiation effects lead to excitation of the beam emittances. General expressions for the equilibrium longitudinal and horizontal (natural) emittances are derived. The impact of lattice design on the natural emittance is discussed, with particu…
Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (CSR) can play an important role by not only increasing the energy spread and emittance of a beam, but also leading to a potential instability. Previous studies of the CSR induced longitudinal instability were carried out for the CSR impedance due to dipole magnets. However, many storage rings include long wigglers where a large fraction of the synchrotron radiation is emitted. This includes high-luminosity factories such as DAPHNE, PEP-II, KEK-B, and CESR-C as well as the damping rings of future linear colliders. In this paper, the instability due to the CSR imp…
The Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring (CESR) has been converted from a High Energy Physics electron-positron collider to operate as a dedicated synchrotron light source for the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) and to conduct accelerator physics research as a test accelerator, capable of studying topics relevant to future damping rings, colliders and light sources. Some of the specific topics that were targeted for the initial phase of operation of the storage ring in this mode, labeled CesrTA (CESR as a Test Accelerator), included 1) tuning techniques to produce low emittanc…
We discuss the proposal of Bell and Leinaas (BL) to measure the circular Unruh effect in storage rings. The ideal concept `circular Unruh effect' has a more realistic correspondent such as `circular vacuum noise' used by Shin Takagi [Prog. Theor. Phys. Suppl. 88, 1 (1986)] The BL resonance behavior does not fit to the SPEAR first order betatron resonance at 3.605 GeV, but of course, the real experimental situation is much more complicated, corresponding, as a matter of fact, to an even more general term that one may call `synchrotron noise'. In the final section we focus on radiometric aspects…
