We discuss the proposal of Bell and Leinaas (BL) to measure the circular Unruh effect in storage rings. The ideal concept `circular Unruh effect' has a more realistic correspondent such as `circular vacuum noise' used by Shin Takagi [Prog. Theor. Phys. Suppl. 88, 1 (1986)] The BL resonance behavior does not fit to the SPEAR first order betatron resonance at 3.605 GeV, but of course, the real experimental situation is much more complicated, corresponding, as a matter of fact, to an even more general term that one may call `synchrotron noise'. In the final section we focus on radiometric aspects of storage ring physics, such as the problem of establishing better quantum field radiometric standards at high energies. The Unruh-like effect could be a useful guide for that purpose
We give an overview of our current/future analytical and numerical work on the spin polarization in high-energy electron storage rings. Our goal is to study the possibility of polarization for the CEPC and FCC-ee. Our work is based on the so-called Bloch equation for the polarization density introduced by Derbenev and Kondratenko in 1975. We also give an outline of the standard approach, the latter being based on the Derbenev-Kondratenko formulas.
The analytical expression of the magnetic field distribution within the aperture of a circular vacuum chamber due to the induced eddy is derived. Two cases are discussed, one is the absence of iron, the other is that the vacuum chamber is between the iron poles, that implies the use of the image current methods. The current angular distribution in the vacuum chamber can be calculated from the ramping rate of the exposed field, then the contour integration is applied to the circular current to obtain the field distribution. The formula can be used to estimate the undesired fields from a circula…
The upgrade project of Hefei Light Source storage ring is under way. In this paper, the wake fields of new designed vacuum chambers have been simulated by CST code, and then broadband impedances were obtained by FFT. Together with resistive wall wake fields, broadband impedance model for storage ring was established. Using theoretical formula, longitudinal and transverse single bunch instabilities were discussed. With carefully-designed vacuum chamber, the threshold of beam instabilities was higher than beam current goal.

The beam lifetime in an electron storage ring is also limited by the loss rate of the stored electrons due to the elastic coulomb scattering of electrons with the nuclei of residual gas atoms. The contribution to the beam lifetime due to this elastic scattering depends upon the shape factor which is governed by the shape of the vacuum chamber. In this paper, analytical expressions for the shape factor for a rectangular and an elliptical vacuum chamber as a function of longitudinal position along the circumference in a storage ring are derived using an approach in which the position of electron…
An intense circularely polarised photon beam interacts with a cooled antiproton beam in a storage ring. Due to spin dependent absorption cross sections for the reaction gamma+antiproton > pi- + antineutron a built-up of polarisation of the stored antiprotons takes place. Figures-of-merit around 0.1 can be reached in principle over a wide range of antiproton energies. In this process antineutrons with Polarisation > 70% emerge. The method is presented for the case of 300 MeV/c cooled antiproton beam.
Beam lifetime in storage rings and colliders is affected by, among other effects, lattice nonlinearities. Their control are of great benefit to the dynamic aperture of an accelerator, whose enlargement leads in general to more efficient injection and longer lifetime. This article describes a procedure to evaluate and correct unwanted nonlinearities by using turn-by-turn beam position monitor data, which is an evolution of previous works on the resonance driving terms (RDTs). Effective sextupole magnetic errors and tilts at the ESRF electron storage ring are evaluated and corrected (when possib…
We have estimated contributions from the lossy and inductive vacuum chamber omponents to the broadband impedance of the NESTOR storage ring by using analytical formulas. As was expected considering the small ring circumference (15.44m), the main contributions both to the longitudinal impedance Z/n and the loss factor k come from the RF-cavity. Cavity impedance was also estimated with CST Microwave Studio (CST Studio Suite{TM} 2006) by simulating coaxial wire method commonly used for impedance measurements. Both estimates agree well. The upper limit of impedance of elliptic holes in the vacuum …
The equations of classical spin-orbit motion can be extended to a Hamiltonian system in 9-dimensional phase space by introducing a coupled spin-orbit Poisson bracket and a Hamiltonian function. After this extension and by establishing connections between initial and extended systems it becomes possible to apply the methods of the theory of Hamiltonian systems to the study of polarized particle beam dynamics in circular accelerators and storage rings. Some of those methods have been implemented in the computer code FORGET-ME-NOT.
Electron cloud interaction with high energy positive beam are believed responsible for various undesirable effects such as vacuum degradation, collective beam instability and even beam loss in high power proton circular accelerator. An important uncertainty in predicting electron cloud instability lies in the detail processes on the generation and accumulation of the electron cloud. The simulation on the build-up of electron cloud is necessary to further studies on beam instability caused by electron cloud. China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is the largest scientific project in building, w…
With the recently emerging global interest in building a next generation of circular electron-positron colliders to study the properties of the Higgs boson, and other important topics in particle physics at ultra-high beam energies, it is also important to pursue the possibility of implementing polarized beams at this energy scale. It is therefore necessary to set up simulation tools to evaluate the beam polarization at these ultra-high beam energies. In this paper, a Monte-Carlo simulation of the equilibrium beam polarization based on the Polymorphic Tracking Code(PTC) (Schmidt et al., 2002 […
It has been shown that a small discontinuity such as an enlargement or a hole on circular waveguides can produce trapped electromagnetic modes with frequencies slightly below the waveguide cutoff. The trapped modes due to multiple discontinuities can lead to high narrow-band contributions to the beam-chamber coupling impedance, especially when the wall conductivity is high enough. To make more reliable estimates of these contributions for real machines, an analytical theory of the trapped modes is developed in this paper for a general case of the vacuum chamber with an arbitrary single-connect…
In this paper we describe our work on spin polarization in high-energy electron storage rings which we base on the Bloch equation for the polarization density and which aims towards the e-/e+ option of the proposed Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) and the proposed Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC). The Bloch equation takes into account non spin-flip and spin-flip effects due to synchrotron radiation including the spin-diffusion effects and the Sokolov-Ternov effect with its Baier-Katkov generalization as well as the kinetic-polarization effect. This mathematical model is an alternati…
The FCC-ee impedance model is being constantly updated closely following the vacuum chamber design and parameters evolution. In particular, at present, a thicker NEG coating of 150 nm (instead of previous 100 nm) has been suggested by the vacuum experts, and a more realistic impedance model of the bellows has been investigated. Moreover, also the transverse impedance has been updated by considering the same sources as for the longitudinal case. Therefore, the FCC-ee impedance database is getting more complete and the impedance model is being refined. In this paper we describe the presently ava…
Cornell's electron/positron storage ring (CESR) was modified over a series of accelerator shutdowns beginning in May 2008, which substantially improves its capability for research and development for particle accelerators. CESR's energy span from 1.8 to 5.6 GeV with both electrons and positrons makes it ideal for the study of a wide spectrum of accelerator physics issues and instrumentation related to present light sources and future lepton damping rings. Additionally a number of these are also relevant for the beam physics of proton accelerators. This paper, the second in a series of four, di…
Ultimate storage rings (USRs), with electron emittance smaller than 100 pm.rad and on the scale of the diffraction limit for hard X-rays in both transverse planes, have the potential to deliver photons with much higher brightness and higher transverse coherence than that projected for the rings currently operational or under construction. Worldwide efforts have been made to design and to build light sources based on USRs. How to obtain a round beam, i.e. beam with equivalent transverse emittances, is an important topic in USR studies. In this paper, we show that a locally-round beam can be ach…
In a number of papers an attractive method of laser polarization of electrons (positrons) at storage rings or linear colliders has been proposed. We show that these suggestions are incorrect and based on errors in simulation of multiple Compton scattering and in calculation of the Compton spin-flip cross sections. We argue that the equilibrium polarization in this method is zero.
In many accelerator storage rings running positively charged beams, ionization of residual gas and secondary electron emission (SEE) in the beam pipe will give rise to an electron cloud which can cause beam blow-up or loss of the circulating beam. A preventative measure that suppresses electron cloud formation is to ensure that the vacuum wall has a low secondary emission yield (SEY). The SEY of thin films of TiN, sputter deposited Non-Evaporable Getters and a novel TiCN alloy were measured under a variety of conditions, including the effect of re-contamination from residual gas.
Louisiana State University Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD) began a control system upgrade project in early 1997. At the time, the storage ring was controlled by a VAX/VMS system, primarily using CAMAC for I/O. The injector Linac was controlled by a separate VME/OS/9 system using custom I/O components. The storage ring control system has been replaced with a PC/Linux based system, utilizing the existing CAMAC subsystem [1]. In an effort to both migrate channels away from CAMAC, and integrate the Linac controls with the storage ring controls, a design for upgrades utilizin…
We have evaluated the data-efficient Bayesian optimization method for the specific task of injection tuning in a circular accelerator. In this paper, we describe the implementation of this method at the Karlsruhe Research Accelerator with up to nine tuning parameters, including the determination of the associated hyperparameters. We show that the Bayesian optimization method outperforms manual tuning and the commonly used Nelder-Mead optimization algorithm both in simulation and experiment. The algorithm was also successfully used to ease the commissioning phase after the installation of new i…
Understanding beam and spin dynamics are fundamental in accelerator physics, and there has been growing interest in having more precise estimations of the beam and spin dynamics variables, as more high precision particle physics experiments in the Intensity Frontier appear. The present paper provides analytical estimations of some of the important variables such as beam transverse chromaticities and the spin precession frequency bias in the simplest type of particle accelerator: a circular magnetic storage ring with weak vertical focusing. We attempt to precisely obtain the next order approxim…
In this paper we present alternative approach for Future Circular electron-positron Collider. Current 100 km circumference design with the top CM energy of 365 GeV (182.5 GeV beam energy) is based on two storage rings to circulate colliding beams. One of the ring-ring design shortcomings is enormous power consumption needed to compensate for 100 MW of the beam energy losses for synchrotron radiation. We propose to use energy recovery linac located in the same tunnel to mitigate this drawback. We show in this paper that our approach would allow a significant, up to an order of magnitude, reduct…
We present a Circular Energy Recovery Collider (CERC) as an alternative approach for a high-energy high-luminosity electron-positron collider to current designs for high-energy electron-positron colliders either based on two storage rings with 100 km circumference or two large linear accelerators. Using Energy Recovery Linacs (ERL) located in the same-size 100 km tunnel would allow a large reduction of the beam energy losses, and therefore a reduction of the power consumption, while providing higher luminosity. It also opens a path for extending the center-of-mass (CM) energy to 500 GeV, which…
With advances in accelerator science and technology in the recent decades, the accelerator community has focused on the development of next-generation light sources, for example the diffraction-limited storage rings (DLSRs), which requires precision control of the electron beam energy and betatron tunes. This work is aimed at understanding magnet hysteresis effects on the electron beam energy and lattice focusing in the circular accelerators, and developing new methods to gain better control of these effects. In this paper, we will report our recent experimental study of the magnetic hysteresi…
Quantum information science is a growing field that promises to take computing into a new age of higher performance and larger scale computing as well as being capable of solving problems classical computers are incapable of solving. The outstanding issue in practical quantum computing today is scaling up the system while maintaining interconnectivity of the qubits and low error rates in qubit operations to be able to implement error correction and fault-tolerant operations. Trapped ion qubits offer long coherence times that allow error correction. However, error correction algorithms require …
In the storage ring of PLS-II, we reduced mechanical displacement of electron beam position monitors (e-BPMs) that is caused by heating during e-beam storage. The orbit feedback system intends that the electron beam pass through the center of the BPM, so to provide stable photon beam into beamlines the BPM pickup itself must be stable to sub-micrometer precision. Thermal deformation of the vacuum chambers on which the BPM pickups are mounted is inevitable when the electron beam current is changed by unintended beam abort. We reduced this deformation by improving the vacuum chamber support and …
We report on extensive measurements at the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring of electron-cloud-induced betatron tune shifts for trains of positron bunches at 2.1 and 5.3 GeV with bunch populations ranging between 0.64x10^10 and 9.6x10^10. Measurements using a witness bunch with variable distance from the end of the train and variable bunch population provide information on cloud decay and cloud pinching during the bunch passage. We employ Monte Carlo simulations of the reflection and absorption of synchrotron radiation photons to determine the pattern of absorption sites around the circum…
The piece of NESTOR vacuum chamber with the ceramic insertion for DC-monitor and RF-shields was simulated by using both transient and wake field solvers of CST Studio Suite. For a 6 mm gap between two RF-shields the contributions of the assembly considered to the longitudinal broadband (BB) impedance Z/n and the loss factor kloss are 0.71 Ohm and 0.21 V/pC, correspondingly. These estimates are the second largest after those of the RF-cavity that were obtained till now for the NESTOR ring components. Contributions from a beam position monitor (BPM) are also obtained by simulation and compared w…
We report on laser spectroscopic measurements on Li$^+$ ions in the experimental storage ring ESR at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. Driving the $2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{3}{2}) \,\leftrightarrow\,2p\,^3\!P_2\;(F=\frac{5}{2}) \leftrightarrow 2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{5}{2})$ $Λ$-transition in $^7$Li$^+$ with two superimposed laser beams it was found that the use of circularly polarized light leads to a disappearance of the resonance structure in the fluorescence signal. This can be explained by optical pumping into a dark state of polarized ions. We present a detailed theoretical…
We report on the first storage of ion beams in the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment; DESIREE, at Stockholm University. We have produced beams of atomic carbon anions and small carbon anion molecules (C$_n^-$, $n=1,2,3,4$) in a sputter ion source. The ion beams were accelerated to 10 keV kinetic energy and stored in an electrostatic ion storage ring enclosed in a vacuum chamber at 13 K. For 10 keV C$_2^-$ molecular anions we measure the residual-gas limited beam storage lifetime to be 448 s $\pm$ 18 s with two independent detector systems. Using the measured storage lifetimes we estimat…
