In recent synchrotron radiation facilities, the use of short (picosecond) electron bunches is a powerful method for producing giant pulses of Terahertz Coherent Synchrotron Radiation (THz CSR). Here we report on the first direct observation of these pulse shapes with a few picoseconds resolution, and of their dynamics over a long time. We thus confirm in a very direct way the theories predicting an interplay between two physical processes. Below a critical bunch charge, we observe a train of identical THz pulses (a broadband Terahertz comb) stemming from the shortness of the electron bunches. Above this threshold, a large part of the emission is dominated by drifting structures, which appear through spontaneous self-organization. These challenging single-shot THz recordings are made possible by using a recently developed photonic time stretch detector with a high sensitivity. The experiment has been realized at the SOLEIL storage ring.
A scheme with two superconducting RF cavities (sc-cavities) is designed to upgrade electron storage rings with odd buckets into multi-length bunches. In this paper, Hefei Light Source II (HLS II) is given as an example for odd buckets. In accordance with 45 buckets, which is multiples of 3, three different length of bunches generated simultaneously is proposed in the presently applied user optics. The final result is to, without low-alpha optics, fill HLS II with long bunches of 50 ps length, medium bunches of 23 ps and short bunches of 6 ps. Each third buckets can be filled with short bunches…
Laser cooling of relativistic heavy ion beams of Li-like C$^{3+}$ and O$^{4+}$ is being in preparation at the experimental Cooler Storage Ring (CSRe). Recently, a preparatory experiment to test important prerequisites for laser cooling of relativistic $^{12}$C$^{3+}$ ion beams using a pulsed laser system has been performed at the CSRe. Unfortunately, the interaction between the ions and the pulsed laser cannot be detected. In order to study the laser cooling process and find the optimized parameters for future laser cooling experiment, a multi-particle tracking method was developed to simulate…
An on-axis injection scheme using a double-frequency RF system in a storage ring with small dynamic aperture is proposed. By altering RF voltages, empty RF buckets can be created which will be used for on-axis injection. After bunches are injected, a reverse RF voltage altering process is performed and the injected bunches can be longitudinally dumped to the main RF buckets. The scheme allows reaping the advantages of the on-axis injection while still performing accumulation.
The Storage Ring at the Advanced Light Source is capable of being filled in selectable buckets. Typically, 276 consecutive buckets out of 328 possible are selected. It has been found that the amount of charge injected is not uniform bucket-to-bucket, sometimes varying by 100% or more. This variability causes problems with beam stability, and it may shorten the beam lifetime. We have devised a feedback system that allows for beam filling in an orderly manner, yielding bunch heights uniform to within 17%. At fill time, multiple bunches are injected into the Storage ring first, then, using feedba…
Electron storage rings of GeV energy with laser pulse stacking cavities are promising intense sources of polarised hard photons which, via pair production, can be used to generate polarised positron beams. Dynamics of electron bunches circulating in a storage ring and interacting with high-power laser pulses is studied both analytically and by simulation. Common features and differences in the behaviour of bunches interacting with an extremely high power laser pulse and with a moderate pulse are discussed. Also considerations on particular lattice designs for Compton gamma rings are presented.
In present work we investigate the potential of a longitudinally focusing device to compress bunches passing an undulator for a synchrotron storage ring. If integrated into a storage ring similar to PETRAIII such device could potentially produce continuous $\sim$1ps pulses of photons in the $nm$ range with peak pulse powers of tens of GW. Even without operating in FEL saturation mode the longitudinal focusing can provide means to increase the brightness and shorten the photon pulse length.
In recent and future synchrotron radiation facilities, relativistic electron bunches with increasingly high charge density are needed for producing brilliant light at various wavelengths, from X-rays to terahertz. In such conditions, interaction of electrons bunches with their own emitted electromagnetic fields leads to instabilities and spontaneous formation of complex spatial structures. Understanding these instabilities is therefore key in most electron accelerators. However, investigations suffer from the lack of non-destructive recording tools for electron bunch shapes. In storage rings, …
The transverse bunch spectrum and the transverse decoherence/recoherence following an initial bunch offset are important phenomena in synchrotrons and storage rings, and are widely used for beam and lattice measurements. Incoherent shifts of the particles betatron frequency and of the synchrotron frequency modify the transverse spectrum and the bunch decoherence. In this study we analyze the effects of transverse space charge and of the rf nonlinearity on the decoherence signals. The transverse bunch decoherence and the resulting coherent spectra are measured in the SIS18 synchrotron at GSI Da…
The multi-bunch injection has been adopt at SSRF which greatly increases the injection rate and reduces injection time compared to the single bunch injection. The multi-bunch injection will massively reduce the beam failure time during users operation and prolong pulsed injection hardware lifetime. In this paper, the scheme to produce multi bunches for the RF electron gun is described. The refilling result and the beam orbit stability for top up operation is discussed.
Spontaneous formation of spatial structures (patterns) occurs in various contexts, ranging from sand dunes and rogue wave formation, to traffic jams. These last decades, very practical reasons also led to studies of pattern formation in relativistic electron bunches used in synchrotron radiation light sources. As the main motivation, the patterns which spontaneously appear during an instability increase the terahertz radiation power by factors exceeding 10000. However the irregularity of these patterns largely prevented applications of this powerful source. Here we show how to make the spatio-…
The laser-driven generation of relativistic electron beams in plasma and their acceleration to high energies with GV/m-gradients has been successfully demonstrated. Now, it is time to focus on the application of laser-plasma accelerated (LPA) beams. The "Accelerator Technology HElmholtz iNfrAstructure" (ATHENA) of the Helmholtz Association fosters innovative particle accelerators and high-power laser technology. As part of the ATHENAe pillar several different applications driven by LPAs are to be developed, such as a compact FEL, medical imaging and the first realization of LPA-beam injection …
Using calculations and mathematical modeling, we demonstrate the feasibility of constructing a synchrotron storage ring for neutral polar molecules. The lattice is a racetrack type 3.6 m in circumference consisting of two of 180-degree arcs, six bunchers, and two long straight sections. Each straight section contains two triplet focusing lenses and space for beam injection and experiments. The design also includes a matched injector and a linear decelerator. Up to 60 bunches can be loaded and simultaneously stored in the ring. The molecules are injected at 90 m/s but the velocity of the circul…

The 4 electrode signals of the beam position detector(BPM) of the STORAGE ring of HEFEI Light Source are directly connected to the domestic oscilloscope with 12bit resolution, 10Gsps sampling rate and 2GHz bandwidth. The acquisition program is run on the cloud host under the Zstack architecture, triggering to read a group of waveforms of 500us each time. The X (horizontal position), Y (vertical position) and Z (longitudinal phase) information of the centroid of 45 bunches 2266 cycles were extracted. The resolution of X and Y of each bunches was about 5um, and the resolution of Z was about 0.5p…
Acceleration and manipulation of ultrashort electron bunches are the basis behind electron and X-ray devices used for ultrafast, atomic-scale imaging and spectroscopy. Using laser-generated THz drivers enables intrinsic synchronization as well as dramatic gains in field strengths, field gradients and component compactness, leading to shorter electron bunches, higher spatio-temporal resolution and smaller infrastructures. We present a segmented THz electron accelerator and manipulator (STEAM) with extended interaction lengths capable of performing multiple high-field operations on the energy an…
We report on extensive measurements at the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring of electron-cloud-induced betatron tune shifts for trains of positron bunches at 2.1 and 5.3 GeV with bunch populations ranging between 0.64x10^10 and 9.6x10^10. Measurements using a witness bunch with variable distance from the end of the train and variable bunch population provide information on cloud decay and cloud pinching during the bunch passage. We employ Monte Carlo simulations of the reflection and absorption of synchrotron radiation photons to determine the pattern of absorption sites around the circum…
Electron storage rings used for the production of synchrotron radiation (SR) have an output photon brightness that is limited by the equilibrium beam emittance. By using interleaved injection and ejection of bunches from a source with repetition rate greater than 1 kHz, we show that it is practicable to overcome this limit in rings of energy ~1 GeV. Sufficiently short kicker pulse lengths enable effective currents of many milliamperes, which can deliver a significant flux of diffraction-limited soft X-ray photons. Thus, either existing SR facilities may be adapted for non-equilibrium operation…
The development of fast detection methods for comprehensive monitoring of electron bunches is a prerequisite to gain comprehensive control over the synchrontron emission in storage rings with their MHz repetition rate. Here, we present a proof-of-principle experiment with at detailed description of our implementation to detect the longitudinal electron bunch profiles via single-shot, near-field electro-optical sampling at the Karlsruhe Research Accelerator (KARA). Our experiment is equipped with an ultra-fast line array camera providing a high-throughput MHz data stream. We characterize statis…
The longitudinal dynamics of electron bunches with a large energy spread circulating in the storage rings with a small momentum compaction factor is considered. Also the structure of the longitudinal phase space is considered as well as its modification due to changes in the ring parameters. The response of an equilibrium area upon changes of the nonlinear momentum compaction factor is presented.
A magnetic spectrometer has been developed for the AWAKE experiment at CERN in order to measure the energy distribution of bunches of electrons accelerated in wakefields generated by proton bunches in plasma. AWAKE is a proof-of-principle experiment for proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration, using proton bunches from the SPS. Electron bunches are accelerated to $\mathcal{O}$(1 GeV) in a rubidium plasma cell and then separated from the proton bunches via a dipole magnet. The dipole magnet also induces an energy-dependent spatial horizontal spread on the electron bunch which then impacts o…
The description of physical processes with many-particle systems is a key approach to the modeling of countless physical systems. In storage rings, where ultrarelativistic particles are agglomerated in dense bunches, the measurement of their phase-space distribution (PSD) is of paramount importance: at any time the PSD not only determines the complete space-time evolution but also provides fundamental performance characteristics for storage ring operation. Here, we demonstrate a non-destructive tomographic imaging technique for the 2D longitudinal PSD of ultrarelativistic electron bunches. For…
We show, through modeling and simulation, that it is feasible to construct a storage ring that will store dense bunches of strong-field-seeking polar molecules at 30 m/s (kinetic energy of 2K) and hold them, for several minutes, against losses due to defocusing, oscillations, and diffusion. The ring, 3 m in diameter, has straight sections that afford access to the stored molecules and a lattice structure that may be adapted for evaporative cooling. Simulation is done using a newly-developed code that tracks the particles, in time, through 400 turns; it accounts for longitudinal velocity change…
We study the effect of a passive harmonic cavity, introduced to cause bunch lengthening, in an electron storage ring. We derive a formula for the induced voltage from such a cavity with high $Q$, excited by a a sequence of bunches, allowing for arbitrary gaps in the sequence and arbitrary currents. Except for a minor term that can be determined iteratively, the voltage is given in terms of a single mode of the Fourier transforms of the bunch forms, namely the mode at the resonant frequency of the cavity. Supposing that the only wake field is from the harmonic cavity, we derive a system of coup…

The injector linacs of the JLC/NLC comprise the e+ booster, the e- drive linac, the e+ booster, and the two prelinacs. These four systems together transport the two types of beams from the 80 MeV point at the end of their respective bunchers up to the storage rings, and then from the storage rings to the 10 GeV point at the beginning of the bunch compressors. Nominally, the e+ booster structure will be L-band and the others S-band. In transport through these linacs it is important that the emittances and particle losses stay within specified tolerances. In particular, the effects of the dipole…
With this paper we extend our studies [1] on polarized beams by distilling tools from the theory of principal bundles. Four major theorems are presented, one which ties invariant fields with the notion of normal form, one which allows one to compare different invariant fields, and two that relate the existence of invariant fields to the existence of certain invariant sets and relations between them. We then apply the theory to the dynamics of spin-1/2 and spin-1 particles and their density matrices describing statistically the particle-spin content of bunches. Our approach thus unifies the spi…
This letter reports the successful use of feedback from a spin polarization measurement to the revolution frequency of a 0.97 GeV/$c$ bunched and polarized deuteron beam in the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) storage ring in order to control both the precession rate ($\approx 121$ kHz) and the phase of the horizontal polarization component. Real time synchronization with a radio frequency (rf) solenoid made possible the rotation of the polarization out of the horizontal plane, yielding a demonstration of the feedback method to manipulate the polarization. In particular, the rotation rate shows a sin…
This paper reports the first simultaneous measurement of the horizontal and vertical components of the polarization vector in a storage ring under the influence of a radio frequency (rf) solenoid. The experiments were performed at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY in Jülich using a vector polarized, bunched $0.97\,\textrm{GeV/c}$ deuteron beam. Using the new spin feedback system, we set the initial phase difference between the solenoid field and the precession of the polarization vector to a predefined value. The feedback system was then switched off, allowing the phase difference to change over tim…
We report on the design, deployment and signal analysis for shielded button electrodes sensitive to electron cloud buildup at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring. These simple detectors, derived from a beam-position monitor electrode design, have provided detailed information on the physical processes underlying the local production and lifetime of electron densities in the storage ring. Digitizing oscilloscopes are used to record electron fluxes incident on the vacuum chamber wall in 1024 time steps of 100 ps or more. The fine time steps provide a detailed characterization of the cloud, allowin…

In this paper, we demonstrate the connection between a magnetic storage ring with additional sextupole fields set so that the x and y chromaticities vanish and the maximizing of the lifetime of in-plane polarization (IPP) for a 0.97-GeV/c deuteron beam. The IPP magnitude was measured by continuously monitoring the down-up scattering asymmetry (sensitive to sideways polarization) in an in-beam, carbon-target polarimeter and unfolding the precession of the IPP due to the magnetic anomaly of the deuteron. The optimum operating conditions for a long IPP lifetime were made by scanning the field of …
Emission of light by a single electron moving on a curved trajectory (synchrotron radiation) is one of the most well-known fundamental radiation phenomena. However experimental situations are more complex as they involve many electrons, each being exposed to the radiation of its neighbors. This interaction has dramatic consequences, one of the most spectacular being the spontaneous formation of spatial structures inside electrons bunches. This fundamental effect is actively studied as it represents one of the most fundamental limitations in electron accelerators, and at the same time a source …
