We study the effect of a passive harmonic cavity, introduced to cause bunch lengthening, in an electron storage ring. We derive a formula for the induced voltage from such a cavity with high $Q$, excited by a a sequence of bunches, allowing for arbitrary gaps in the sequence and arbitrary currents. Except for a minor term that can be determined iteratively, the voltage is given in terms of a single mode of the Fourier transforms of the bunch forms, namely the mode at the resonant frequency of the cavity. Supposing that the only wake field is from the harmonic cavity, we derive a system of coupled Haïssinski equations which determine the bunch positions and profiles in the equilibrium state. The number of unknowns in the system is only twice the number of bunches, and it can be solved quickly by a Newton iteration, starting with a guess determined by path-following from a solution at weak current. We explore the effect of the fill pattern on the bunch lengthening, and also the dependence on the shunt impedance and detuning of the cavity away from the third harmonic of the main accelerating cavity. We consider two measures to reduce the effects of gaps: 1) distribution of the gaps around the ring to the greatest extent allowed, and 2) "guard bunches" with higher charges adjacent to the gaps, compensating for the charge missing in gaps. Results for parameters of the forthcoming ALS-U light source are presented.
A new bunch length measurement method based on high order mode cavity was proposed. Operating the harmonic cavity at mode TM0n0 so that its radius could be chosen, in order to break the limitation of beam pipe radius. A two-cavity bunch length monitor for linac of positron source was designed. Operating frequency selection for different bunch time structure was discussed and calculation formula of bunch length was deducted. Fundamental harmonic cavity resonates at 2.856 GHz with mode TM010. Fifth harmonic cavity resonates at 14.28 GHz (fifth harmonic of the linac fundamental frequency 2.856 GH…
With a low emittance and short-bunch electron beam at a high repetition rate realized by a superconducting linac, stimulated excitation of an optical cavity at the terahertz spectrum range has been shown. The electron beam passed through small holes in the cavity mirrors without being destroyed. A sharp resonance structure which indicated wide-band stimulated emission via coherent diffraction radiation was observed while scanning the round-trip length of the cavity.
Higher-order mode (HOM) based intra-cavity beam diagnostics has been proved effectively and conveniently in superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) accelerators. Our recent research shows that the beam harmonics in the bunch train excited HOM spectrum, which have much higher signal-to-noise ratio than the intrinsic HOM peaks, may also be useful for beam diagnostics. In this paper, we will present our study on bunch train excited HOMs, including the theoretic model and recent experiments carried out based on the DC-SRF photoinjector and SRF linac at Peking University.
In the present design of the TESLA Linear Collider with integrated X-ray Laser Facility it is necessary that 1 ms long bunch trains with about 10000 bunches are generated and distributed to several free electron laser (FEL) beam lines. The different scientific applications of the X-ray FELs need specific filling patterns of the bunches in the bunch train. It is shown that a fast switch-yard based on a superconducting transverse mode cavity can be used to generate the required bunch pattern in a flexible way while keeping the beam loading in the main linear accelerator constant. The conceptual …
A crab cavity is required in the CLIC to allow effective head-on collision of bunches at the IP. A high operating frequency is preferred as the deflection voltage required for a given rotation angle and the RF phase tolerance for a crab cavity are inversely proportional to the operating frequency. The short bunch spacing of the CLIC scheme and the high sensitivity of the crab cavity to dipole kicks demand very high damping of the inter-bunch wakes, the major contributor to the luminosity loss of colliding bunches. This paper investigates the nature of the wakefields in the CLIC crab cavity and…
We present the design of a high repetition rate MeV energy ultrafast electron diffraction instrument based on a DC photoelectron gun and an SRF linac with multiple independently controlled accelerating and bunching cavities. The design is based on the existing Cornell photoinjector, which can readily be applied to the presented findings. Using particle tracking simulations in conjunction with multiobjective genetic algorithm optimization, we explore the smallest bunch lengths, emittance, and probe spot sizes achievable. We present results for both stroboscopic conditions (with single electrons…
Temporally-modulated electron beams have a wide array of applications ranging from the generation of coherently-enhanced electromagnetic radiation to the resonant excitation of electromagnetic wakefields in advanced-accelerator concepts. Likewise producing low-energy ultrashort microbunches could be useful for ultra-fast electron diffraction and new accelerator-based light-source concepts. In this Letter we propose and experimentally demonstrate a passive microbunching technique capable of forming a picosecond bunch train at $\sim 6$~MeV. The method relies on the excitation of electromagnetic …
High frequency High Order Modes can significantly affect the coupled-bunch stability in a circular accelerator. With a large enough shunt impedance they may drive a coupled-bunch transverse instability. We have developed an analytical model and implemented it in the NHT Vlasov solver. The results show that the instability is characterized by the excitation of many azimuthal intra-bunch modes, which have similar growth rates, that make the traditional remedies such as a flat resistive feedback and chromaticity inefficient in suppressing it. For the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider this cou…
A higher harmonic cavity (HHC), used to cause bunch lengthening for an increase in the Touschek lifetime, is a feature of several fourth generation synchrotron light sources. The desired bunch lengthening is complicated by the presence of required gaps in the bunch train. In a recent paper the author and Venturini studied the effect of various fill patterns by calculating the charge densities in the equilibrium state, through coupled Haïssinski equations. We assumed that the only collective force was from the beam loading (wake field) of the harmonic cavity in its lowest mode. The present pape…
High-repetition-rate sources of bright electron bunches have a wide range of applications. They can directly be employed as probes in electron-scattering setups, or serve as a backbone for the generation of radiation over a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum. This paper describes the development of a compact sub-Mega-electronvolt (sub-MeV) electron-source setup capable of operating at MHz repetition rates and forming sub-picosecond electron bunches with transverse emittance below 20~nm. The setup relies on a conduction-cooled superconducting single-cell resonator with its geometry alt…
Recently a mechanism of storage ring operation based on the steady-state microbunching has been proposed and investigated, which contains a laser cavity modulator providing the longitudinal focusing for the circulating microbunches. In this paper we analyze the impact of the coherent undulator radiation on the longitudinal single-bunch multi-turn collective dynamics, exploring a new possible instability mechanism. We formulate the multi-turn equations of motion for the single microbunch as two sets of difference equations in the modulator and in the remaining storage ring. The dispersion equat…
KEK-ATF is doing R&D establishing high-current and low-emittance electron beam for the future linear colliders. In ATF, 15 ps length electron beam is generated by combination of a thermionic gun, a couple of 357 MHz SHBs, and a S-band TW buncher. In the linac, beam instability caused by the fluctuated amplitude and phase of SHBs has been observed. The reason of the fluctuation is considered to be the multi-pacting in the SHB cavity. In addition, Q value of the cavity is almost half of the designed value, then SHBs are not operated in an optimum condition. We have fabricated new SHBs with consi…
FLASH plans to use a "third harmonic" (3.9GHz) superconducting cavity to compensate nonlinear distortions of the longitudinal phase space due to the sinusoidal curvature of the the cavity voltage of the TESLA 1.3GHz cavities. Higher order modes (HOMs) in the 3.9GHz have a significant impact on the dynamics of the electron bunches in a long bunch train. Kicks due to dipole modes can be enhanced along the bunch train depending on the frequency and Q-value of the modes. The enhancement factor for a constant beam offset with respect to the cavity has been calculated. A simple Monte Carlo model of …
The utility of a passive fourth-harmonic cavity plays key role in suppressing longitudinal beam instabilities in the electron storage ring and lengthens the bunch by a factor of 2.6 for the phase II project of Hefei Light Source(HLS II). Meanwhile, instabilities driven by higher-order modes(HOM) may limit the performance of the higher-harmonic cavity. In this paper, the parasitic coupled-bunch instability which is driven by narrow band parasitic modes and the microwave instability which is driven by broadband HOM are both modeled analytically. The analytic modeling results are in good agreemen…
Ultralow emittance ($\leq20$ nm, normalized) electron beams with $10^5$ electrons per bunch are obtained by tightly focusing an ultrafast ($\sim$ 100 fs) laser pulse on the cathode of a 1.6 cell radiofrequency photoinjector. Taking advantage of the small initial longitudinal emittance, a downstream velocity bunching cavity is used to compress the beam to $<10$ fs rms bunch length. The measurement is performed using a thick high voltage deflecting cavity which is shown to be well-suited to measure ultrashort durations of bunching beams, provided that the beam reaches a ballistic longitudinal fo…
For the development of the X-ray Free Electron Lasers test facility (SXFEL) at SINAP, ultra-short bunch is the crucial requirement for excellent lasing performance. It's a big challenge for deflecting cavity to measure the length of ultra-short bunch, and higher deflecting gradient is required for higher measurement resolution. X-band travelling wave deflecting structure has features of higher deflecting voltage and compact structure, which is good performance at ultra-short bunch length measurement. In this paper, a new X-band deflecting structure has been designed operated at HEM11-2pi/3 mod…
This paper continues the work of two previous treatments of bunch lengthening by a passive harmonic cavity in an electron storage ring. Such cavities, intended to reduce the effect of Touschek scattering, are a feature of fourth generation synchrotron light sources. The charge densities in the equilibrium state are given by solutions of coupled Haïssinski equations, which are nonlinear integral equations. If the only wake fields are from cavity resonators, the unknowns can be the Fourier transforms of bunch densities at the resonator frequencies. The solution scheme based on this choice of unk…
Cavity Beam Length Monitor is beam length measurement detector metering ultra short bunch. We designed a RF front-end and make simulations to testify this has high signal-to-noise ratio ensuring beam length measurement precision.
We describe a simple technique to passively bunch non-ultrarelativistics ($\lesssim 10$~MeV) electron bunches produced in conventional photoinjectors. The scheme employs a dielectric-lined waveguide located downstream of the electron source to impress an energy modulation on a picosecond bunch. The energy modulation is then converted into a density modulation via ballistic bunching. The method is shown to support the generation of sub-picosecond bunch train with multi-kA peak currents. The relatively simple technique is expected to find applications in compact, accelerator-based, light sources…
In the upgrade project of Hefei Light Source (HLS II), a new digital longitudinal bunch-by-bunch feedback system will be developed to suppress the coupled bunch instabilities in the storage ring effectively. We design a new waveguide overloaded cavity longitudinal feedback kicker as the feedback actuator. The beam pipe of the kicker is racetrack shape so as to avoid a transition part to the octagonal vacuum chamber. The central frequency and the bandwidth of the kicker have been simulated and optimized to achieve design goals by the HFSS code. The higher shunt impedance can be obtained by usin…
We present a novel concept for the generation of gigahertz repetition rate high brightness electron bunches. A custom design 100 kV thermionic gun provides a continuous electron beam, with the current determined by the filament size and temperature. A 1 GHz rectangular RF cavity deflects the beam across a knife-edge, creating a pulsed beam. Adding a higher harmonic mode to this cavity results in a flattened magnetic field profile which increases the duty cycle to 30%. Finally, a compression cavity induces a negative longitudinal velocity-time chirp in a bunch, initiating ballistic compression.…
A common-mode free cavity BPM is currently under development at Fermilab within the ILC-CLIC collaboration. This monitor will be operated in a CLIC Main Linac multi-bunch regime, and needs to provide both, high spatial and time resolution. We present the design concept, numerical analysis, investigation on tolerances and error effects, as well as simulations on the signal response applying a multi-bunch stimulus.
The free-electron laser FLASH at DESY and the European XFEL are operated with superconducting radio frequency cavities and supply beam to several user experiments. The switching time between experiments is limited to dozens of microseconds. This contribution will show a regulation with a frequency shifted superconducting cavity to manipulate and change the accelerating properties of electron bunches with 250 kHz.The main challenge of the concept presented in this contribution can be summarized in this statement: finding a way to modulate the energy of individual bunches in a single-source mult…
A plasma flow behind a relativistic electron bunch propagating through a cold plasma is found assuming that the transverse and longitudinal dimensions of the bunch are small and the bunch can be treated as a point charge. In addition, the bunch charge is assumed small. A simplified system of equations for the plasma electrons is derived and it is shown that, through a simple rescaling of variables, the bunch charge can be eliminated from the equations. These equations have a unique solution, with an ion cavity formed behind the driver. The equations are solved numerically and the scaling of th…
FLASH and the European XFEL are SASE-FEL user facilities, at which superconducting TESLA cavities are operated in a pulsed mode to accelerate long bunch-trains. Several cavities are powered by one klystron. While the low-level rf system is able to stabilize the vector sum of the accelerating gradient of one rf station sufficiently, the rf parameters of individual cavities vary within the bunch-train. In correlation with misalignments, intrabunch-train trajectory variations are induced. An efficient model is developed to describe the effect at low beam energy, using numerically adjusted transfe…
In the past, calculation of wakefields generated by an electron bunch propagating in a plasma has been carried out in linear approximation, where the plasma perturbation can be assumed small and plasma equations of motion linearized. This approximation breaks down in the blowout regime where a high-density electron driver expels plasma electrons from its path and creates a cavity void of electrons in its wake. In this paper, we develop a technique that allows to calculate short-range longitudinal and transverse wakes generated by a witness bunch being accelerated inside the cavity. Our results…
A transverse deflecting structure (TDS) is a well-known device for characterizing the longitudinal properties of an electron bunch in a linear accelerator. The standard use of such a cavity involves streaking the bunch along a transverse axis and analysing the image on a screen downstream to find the bunch length and slice properties along the other transverse axis. A novel X-band deflecting structure, which will allow the polarization of the deflecting field to be adjusted, is currently being designed as part of a collaboration between CERN, DESY and PSI. This new design will allow bunches to…
Terahertz frequency wakefields can be excited by ultra-short relativistic electron bunches travelling through dielectric lined waveguide (DLW) structures. These wakefields can either accelerate a witness bunch with high gradient, or modulate the energy of the driving bunch. In this paper, we study a passive dechirper based on the DLW to compensate the correlated energy spread of the bunches accelerated by the laser plasma wakefield accelerator (LWFA). A rectangular waveguide structure was employed taking advantage of its continuously tunable gap during operation. The assumed 200 MeV driving bu…
The A0 Photoinjector at Fermilab can produce high charge (10-14 nC) electron bunches of low emittance (20 pi mm-mrad for 12 nC). We have undertaken a study of the optimal compression conditions. Off-crest acceleration in the 9-cell capture cavity induces an energy-time correlation, which is rotated by the compressor chicane (4 dipoles). The bunch length is measured using streak camera images of optical transition radiation. We present measurements under various conditions, including the effect of the laser pulse length (2 ps sigma Gaussian vs. 10 ps FWHM flat top). The best compression to date…
For development of compact ultrafast electron source system, we are currently designing a short-pulse RF-gun with RF focusing structure by means of a series of comprehensive modeling analysis processes. EM design of a 2.5 cell resonant cavity with input coupler, acceleration dynamics of photo-emitted electron bunch, EM design of RF-lens with input coupler, and phasespace analysis of focused electron bunch are systematically examined with multi-physics simulators. All the features of the 2.856 GHz cavity geometry were precisely engineered for acceleration energies ranging from 100 keV to 500 ke…
Recent studies have shown that the prospects for significantly increasing bunch intensities in the LHC for the luminosity upgrade (HL-LHC) may be severely limited by the available cryogenic cooling capacity and the electron-cloud (EC) driven beam instability. However, it is planned that during the HL-LHC era the bunch intensities in the LHC will go up by nearly a factor of two compared to the LHC-design values. This motivates the exploration of additional EC mitigation techniques that can be adopted in addition to those already in place. Preliminary simulations indicated that long flat bunches…
We have estimated contributions from the lossy and inductive vacuum chamber omponents to the broadband impedance of the NESTOR storage ring by using analytical formulas. As was expected considering the small ring circumference (15.44m), the main contributions both to the longitudinal impedance Z/n and the loss factor k come from the RF-cavity. Cavity impedance was also estimated with CST Microwave Studio (CST Studio Suite{TM} 2006) by simulating coaxial wire method commonly used for impedance measurements. Both estimates agree well. The upper limit of impedance of elliptic holes in the vacuum …
In previous work [1] general expressions, valid for arbitrary bunch lengths, were derived for the wakefields of corrugated structures with flat geometry, such as is used in the RadiaBeam/LCLS dechirper. However, the bunch at the end of linac-based X-ray FELs--like the LCLS--is extremely short, and for short bunches the wakes can be considerably simplified. In this work, we first derive analytical approximations to the short-range wakes. These are generalized wakes, in the sense that their validity is not limited to a small neighborhood of the symmetry axis, but rather extends to arbitrary tran…

At the SASE-FEL user facilities FLASH and European XFEL, superconducting TESLA type cavities are used for acceleration of the driving electron bunches. The high achievable duty cycle allows for operating with long bunch trains, hence considerably increasing the efficiency of the machine. However, multibunch free electron lasers (FEL) operation requires longitudinal and transverse stability within the bunch train. The purpose of this work is to investigate the intra-bunch-train transverse dynamics at FLASH and European XFEL. Key relationships of superconducting rf cavity operation and the resul…
Currently, Fermilab Booster accelerates ~4.5E12 protons per pulse (ppp) in 81 bunches from 400 MeV to 8 GeV at 15 Hz to provide beam to multiple HEP experiments and is being upgraded to handle higher beam intensity >6.7E12 ppp at a repetition rate of 20 Hz. In the current mode of operation, we control longitudinal coupled bunch instabilities (LCBI) using combination of passive and active dampers. The issues with LCBI are expected to worsen at higher beam intensities. Here, we would like to investigate at what time in the beam cycle a particular mode is going to originate and how much it contri…

Studies were made into the arise and an evolution of the beam breakup (BBU) instability in a rectangular dielectric resonator under excitation by a sequence of relativistic electron bunches. The dielectric resonator is a metal rectangular waveguide $R_{26}$ $(45mm\times 90mm)$ with Teflon dielectric slabs $8.2mm$ thick (dielectric constant $\varepsilon=2.051$) located along the wide side of the resonator. The wavelength of the $LM_{21}$ operating mode having a symmetric profile of the longitudinal electric field component is $53.2mm$. The electron energy of bunches is $4.5MeV$ , the charge of …
The J-PARC Main Ring (MR) has achieved the delivery of the 30 GeV proton beam with the beam power of 500 kW to the neutrino experiment in May 2018. The longitudinal coupled-bunch instabilities have been observed in the MR for the beam power beyond 470 kW. Since more significant coupled-bunch oscillation was observed in higher beam power, the mitigation of the coupled-bunch instabilities is necessary for the stable beam delivery with the beam power beyond 500 kW. A new feedback system was developed to suppress the coupled-bunch instabilities. The feedback system consists of a wall current monit…
We studied the coupled beam motion in a storage ring between the transverse and longitudinal directions introduced by crab cavities. Analytic form of the linear decoupling transformation is derived. The equilibrium bunch distribution in an electron storage ring with a crab cavity is given, including contribution to the eigen-emittance induced by the crab cavity. Application to the short pulse generation scheme using crab cavities is considered.
Third harmonic cavities have been designed and fabricated by FNAL to be used at the FLASH/XFEL facility at DESY to minimise the energy spread along the bunches. Modes in these cavities are analysed and the sensitivity to frequency errors are assessed. A circuit model is employed to model the monopole bands. The monopole circuit model is enhanced to include successive cell coupling, in addition to the usual nearest neighbour coupling. A mode matching code is used to facilitate rapid simulations, incorporating fabrication errors. Curves surfaces are approximated by a series of abrupt transitions…
Beam tail effect of multi-bunches will influence the electron beam performances in high intensity thermionic RF gun. Beam dynamic calculations that illustrate the working states of single and multi-pulse fed-in of performance-enhanced EC-ITC (External Cathode Independent Tunable Cavity) RF gun for FEL (Free Electron Laser) injector are performed to estimate extracted bunch properties. By using both Parmela and homemade MATLAB codes, the effects of single beam tail as well as interactions of multi-pulses are analyzed, where ring-based electron algorithm is adopted to calculated RF fields and sp…
Third harmonic superconducting cavities have been designed and fabricated by FNAL to minimise the energy spread along bunches in the FLASH facility at DESY. A module, consisting of four nine-cell 3.9 GHz cavities, has been installed in FLASH. The first measurement with beam excitation is presented, and the comparisons to transmission measurement without beam and simulations are made. Higher order modes (HOMs) are able to propagate to adjacent cavities through attached beam tubes. Modes from 1.3 GHz cavities in the module nearby also propagate into this module.
