We study the optimal performance of a three-level quantum refrigerator using a trade-off objective function, $Ω$ function, which represents a compromise between the energy benefits and the energy losses of a thermal device. First, we optimize the performance of our refrigerator by employing a two-parameter optimization scheme and show that the first two-terms in the series expansion of the obtained coefficient of performance (COP) match with those of some classical models of refrigerator. Then, in the high-temperature limit, optimizing with respect to one parameter while constraining the other one, we obtain the lower and upper bounds on the COP for both strong as well as weak (intermediate) matter-field coupling conditions. In the strong matter-field coupling regime, the obtained bounds on the COP exactly match with the bounds already known for some models of classical refrigerators. Further for weak matter-field coupling, we derive some new bounds on the the COP of the refrigerator which lie beyond the range covered by bounds obtained for strong matter-field coupling. Finally, in the parameter regime where both cooling power and $Ω$ function can be maximized, we compare the cooling power of the quantum refrigerator at maximum $Ω$ function with the maximum cooling power.
We investigate quantum Otto engine and refrigeration cycles of a time-dependent harmonic oscillator operating under the conditions of maximum $Ω$-function, a trade-off objective function which represents a compromise between energy benefits and losses for a specific job, for both adiabatic and nonadiabatic (sudden) frequency modulations. We derive analytical expressions for the efficiency and coefficient of performance of the Otto cycle. For the case of adiabatic driving, we point out that in the low-temperature regime, the harmonic Otto engine (refrigerator) can be mapped to Feynman's ratchet…
Quantum speed limit, furnishing a lower bound on the required time for the evolution of a quantum system through the state space, imposes an ultimate natural limitation to the dynamics of physical devices. Quantum absorption refrigerators, on the other hand, have attracted a great deal of attention in the last few years. In this article, we discuss the effects of quantum speed limit on the performance of a quantum absorption refrigerator. In particular, we show that there exists a trade-off relation between the steady cooling rate of the refrigerator and the minimum time taken to reach the ste…
The thermodynamic uncertainty relation, originally derived for classical Markov-jump processes, provides a trade-off relation between precision and dissipation, deepening our understanding of the performance of quantum thermal machines. Here, we examine the interplay of quantum system coherences and heat current fluctuations on the validity of the thermodynamics uncertainty relation in the quantum regime. To achieve the current statistics, we perform a full counting statistics simulation of the Redfield quantum master equation. We focus on steady-state quantum absorption refrigerators where no…

An implementation of a small quantum absorption refrigerator in a circuit QED architecture is proposed. The setup consists of three harmonic oscillators coupled to a Josephson unction. The refrigerator is autonomous in the sense that it does not require any external control for cooling, but only thermal contact between the oscillators and heat baths at different temperatures. In addition, the setup features a built-in switch, which allows the cooling to be turned on and off. If timing control is available, this enables the possibility for coherence-enhanced cooling. Finally, we show that signi…
We have developed a system for tapered fiber measurements of optomechanical resonators inside a dilution refrigerator, which is compatible with both on- and off-chip devices. Our apparatus features full three-dimensional control of the taper-resonator coupling conditions enabling critical coupling, with an overall fiber transmission efficiency of up to 70%. Notably, our design incorporates an optical microscope system consisting of a coherent bundle of 37,000 optical fibers for real-time imaging of the experiment at a resolution of $\sim$1 $μ$m. We present cryogenic optical and optomechanical …
We study the trade-off relations given by the l_1-norm coherence of general multipartite states. Explicit trade-off inequalities are derived with lower bounds given by the coherence of either bipartite or multipartite reduced density matrices. In particular, for pure three-qubit states, it is explicitly shown that the trade-off inequality is lower bounded by the three tangle of quantum entanglement.
We investigate whether a trade-off relation between the diagonal elements of the mean square error matrix exists for the two-parameter unitary models with mutually commuting generators. We show that the error trade-off relation which exists in our models of a finite dimension system is a generic phenomenon in the sense that it occurs with a finite volume in the spate space. We analyze a qutrit system to show that there can be an error trade-off relation given by the SLD and RLD Cramer-Rao bounds that intersect each other. First, we analyze an example of the reference state showing the non-triv…
Security trade-offs have been established for one-way bit commitment in quant-ph/0106019. We study this trade-off in two superselection settings. We show that for an `abelian' superselection rule (exemplified by particle conservation) the standard trade-off between sealing and binding properties still holds. For the non-abelian case (exemplified by angular momentum conservation) the security trade-off can be more subtle, which we illustrate by showing that if the bit-commitment is forced to be ancilla-free an asymptotically secure quantum bit commitment is possible.
We investigate the nonlocality distributions among multiqubit systems based on the maximal violations of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality of reduced pairwise qubit systems. We present a trade-off relation satisfied by these maximal violations, which gives rise to restrictions on the distribution of nonlocality among the subqubit systems. For a three-qubit system, it is impossible that all pairs of qubits violate the CHSH inequality, and once a pair of qubits violates the CHSH inequality maximally, the other two pairs of qubits must both obey the CHSH inequality. Detailed exampl…
We study the trade-off relations on the maximal violation of CHSH tests for the multi-qubit pure states. Firstly, according to the classification of 3-qubit pure states under stochastic local operations and classical communication, four trade-off relations on CHSH tests are provided. The process of proof also provides the method of calculating its exact value. Then we consider the multi-qubit quantum systems, and we prove that the conjecture in [PRA 94, 042105 (2016)] is right for some special 4-qubit or more qubit pure states.
Common misconceptions on the Heisenberg principle are reviewed, and the original spirit of the principle is reestablished in terms of the trade-off between information retrieved by a measurement and disturbance on the measured system. After analyzing the possibility of probabilistically reversible measurements, along with erasure of information and undoing of disturbance, general information-disturbance trade-offs are presented, where the disturbance of the measurement is related to the possibility in principle of undoing its effect.
We analyze in details a conditional measurement scheme based on linear optical components, feed-forward loop and homodyne detection. The scheme may be used to achieve two different tasks. On the one hand it allows the extraction of information with minimum disturbance about a set of coherent states. On the other hand, it represents a nondemolitive measurement scheme for the annihilation operator, i.e. an indirect measurement of the Q-function. We investigate the information/disturbance trade-off for state inference and introduce the estimation/distortion trade-off to assess estimation of the Q…
We derive a state dependent error-disturbance trade-off based on a statistical distance in the sequential measurements of a pair of noncommutative observables and experimentally verify the relation with a photonic qubit system. We anticipate that this Letter may further stimulate the study on the quantum uncertainty principle and related applications in quantum measurements.
Uncertainty relations in quantum mechanics express bounds on our ability to simultaneously obtain knowledge about expectation values of non-commuting observables of a quantum system. They quantify trade-offs in accuracy between complementary pieces of information about the system. In Quantum multiparameter estimation, such trade-offs occur for the precision achievable for different parameters characterizing a density matrix: an uncertainty relation emerges between the achievable variances of the different estimators. This is in contrast to classical multiparameter estimation, where simultaneou…
We demonstrate that multiple copies of a bipartite entangled pure state may serve as a catalyst for certain entanglement transformations while a single copy cannot. Such a state is termed a "multiple-copy catalyst" for the transformations. A trade-off between the number of copies of source state and that of the catalyst is also observed. These results can be generalized to probabilistic entanglement transformations directly.
We study the trade-off relations satisfied by the genuine tripartite nonlocality in multipartite quantum systems. From the reduced three-qubit density matrices of the four-qubit generalized Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states and W states (4-qubit entangled state), we find that there exists a trade-off relation among the mean values of the Svetlichny operators associated with these reduced states. Namely, the genuine three-qubit nonlocalities are not independent. For four-qubit generalized GHZ states and W states, the summation of all their three-qubit maximal (squared) mean values of the…

State disturbance by a quantum measurement is at the core of foundational quantum physics and constitutes a fundamental basis of secure quantum information processing. While quantifying an information-disturbance relation has been a long-standing problem, recently verified reversibility of a quantum measurement requires to refine such a conventional information trade-off toward a complete picture of information conservation in quantum measurement. Here we experimentally demonstrate complete trade-off relations among all information contents, i.e., information gain, disturbance and reversibilit…
We calculate the trade-off between the quality of estimating the quantum state of an ensemble of identically prepared qubits and the minimum level of disturbance that has to be introduced by this procedure in quantum mechanics. The trade-off is quantified using two mean fidelities: the operation fidelity which characterizes the average resemblance of the final qubit state to the initial one, and the estimation fidelity describing the quality of the obtained estimate. We analyze properties of quantum operations saturating the achievability bound for the operation fidelity versus the estimation …
String commitment schemes are similar to the well studied bit commitment schemes in cryptography with the difference that the committing party, say Alice, is supposed to commit a long string instead of a single bit, to another party say Bob. Similar to bit commitment schemes, such schemes are supposed to be binding, i.e Alice cannot change her choice after committing, and concealing i.e. Bob cannot find Alice's committed string before Alice reveals it. Ideal commitment schemes are known to be impossible. Even if some degrees of cheating is allowed, Buhrman, Christandl, Hayden, Lo and Wehner (q…
This study confirms a local trade-off between information and disturbance in quantum measurements. It is represented by the correlation between the changes in these two quantities when the measurement is slightly modified. The correlation indicates that when the measurement is modified to increase the obtained information, the disturbance also increases in most cases. However, the information can be increased while decreasing the disturbance because the correlation is not necessarily perfect. For measurements having imperfect correlations, this paper discusses a general scheme that raises the …
We address the trade-off between information and disturbance in qubit thermometry from the perspective of quantum estimation theory. Given a quantum measurement, we quantify information via the Fisher information of the measurement and disturbance via four different figures of merit, which capture different aspects (statistical, thermodynamical, geometrical) of the trade-off. For each disturbance measure, the efficient measurements, i.e. the measurements that introduce a disturbance not greater than any other measurement extracting the same amount of information, are determined explicitly. The…
Recent work has precisely characterized the achievable trade-offs between three key information processing tasks---classical communication (generation or consumption), quantum communication (generation or consumption), and shared entanglement (distribution or consumption), measured in bits, qubits, and ebits per channel use, respectively. Slices and corner points of this three-dimensional region reduce to well-known protocols for quantum channels. A trade-off coding technique can attain any point in the region and can outperform time-sharing between the best-known protocols for accomplishing e…
