For a natural number $m \ge 2$, we study $m$ layers of finite depth, horizontally infinite, viscous, and incompressible fluid bounded below by a flat rigid bottom. Adjacent layers meet at free interface regions, and the top layer is bounded above by a free boundary as well. A uniform gravitational field, normal to the rigid bottom, acts on the fluid. We assume that the fluid mass densities are strictly decreasing from bottom to top and consider the cases with and without surface tension acting on the free surfaces. In addition to these gravity-capillary effects, we allow a force to act on the bulk and external stress tensors to act on the free interface regions. Both of these additional forces are posited to be in traveling wave form: time-independent when viewed in a coordinate system moving at a constant, nontrivial velocity parallel to the lower rigid boundary. Without surface tension in the case of two dimensional fluids and with all positive surface tensions in the higher dimensional cases, we prove that for each sufficiently small force and stress tuple there exists a traveling wave solution. The existence of traveling wave solutions to the one layer configuration ($m=1$) was recently established and, to the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first construction of traveling wave solutions to the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the $m$-layer arrangement.
We construct co-rotating and traveling vortex sheets for 2D incompressible Euler equation, which are supported on several small closed curves. These examples represent a new type of vortex sheet solutions other than two known classes. The construction is based on Birkhoff-Rott operator, and accomplished by using implicit function theorem at point vortex solutions with suitably chosen function spaces.
In this paper, we study desingularization of vortices for the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations in the full plane. We construct a family of steady vortex pairs for the Euler equations with a general vorticity function, which constitutes a desingularization of a pair of point vortices with equal magnitude and opposite signs. The results are obtained by using an improved vorticity method.
We study an incompressible Darcy's free boundary problem, recently introduced in [22]. Our goal is to prove the existence of non-trivial traveling wave solutions and thus validate the interest of this model to describe cell motility. The model equations include a convection diffusion equation for the polarity marker concentration and the incompressible Darcy's equation. The mathematical novelty of this problem is the nonlinear destabilizing term in the boundary condition that describes the active character of the cell cytoskeleton. We first study the linear stability of this problem and we sho…
In this study, we analyze the behavior of monotone traveling waves of a one-dimensional porous medium equation modeling mechanical properties of living tissues. We are interested in the asymptotics where the pressure, which governs the diffusion process and limits the creation of new cells, becomes very stiff, and the porous medium equation degenerates towards a free boundary problem of Hele-Shaw type. This is the so-called incompressible limit. The solutions of the limit Hele-Shaw problem then couple "free dynamics" with zero pressure, and "incompressible dynamics" with positive pressure and …
In this paper we study a finite-depth layer of viscous incompressible fluid in dimension $n \ge 2$, modeled by the Navier-Stokes equations. The fluid is assumed to be bounded below by a flat rigid surface and above by a free, moving interface. A uniform gravitational field acts perpendicularly to the flat surface, and we consider the cases with and without surface tension acting on the free interface. In addition to these gravity-capillary effects, we allow for a second force field in the bulk and an external stress tensor on the free interface, both of which are posited to be in traveling wav…
We use the vorticity transportation equation as the start point--with the help of stream function for two-dimensional planar incompressible flows--to obtain exact solutions that characterize evolution and dynamics of the flows. These traveling wave solutions, including both continuous and solitary waves, also recover the results existing in the theory of potential flows. We further analyze the flow patterns regarding symmetry solutions generated by Lie transformation groups. Some of the symmetry solutions have not been discussed in the current literature. They could display flow patterns very …
In this paper, we study the existence and asymptotic properties of the traveling vortex pairs for the two-dimensional inviscid incompressible Boussinesq equations. We construct a family of traveling vorticity pairs, which constitutes the de-singularization of a pair of point vortices with equal intensity but opposite sign. Using the improved vorticity method, we also give limiting position of the supports of vorticities.
This paper concerns the construction of traveling wave solutions to the free boundary incompressible Navier-Stokes system. We study a single layer of viscous fluid in a strip-like domain that is bounded below by a flat rigid surface and above by a moving surface. The fluid is acted upon by a bulk force and a surface stress that are stationary in a coordinate system moving parallel to the fluid bottom. We also assume that the fluid is subject to a uniform gravitational force that can be resolved into a sum of a vertical component and a component lying in the direction of the traveling wave velo…
We study the incompressible limit of the porous medium equation with a reaction term that is non-monotone with respect to the pressure variable. More specifically we consider reaction terms that are either bistable or monostable. We show that this type of reaction term generates many interesting differences in the qualitative behavior of solutions, in contrast to the problem with monotone reaction terms that have been extensively studied in recent literature. After characterizing the limit problem, we embark on a comprehensive study of the problem in one space dimension, to illustrate the deli…
In this article, we construct traveling-rotating helical vortices with small cross-section to the 3D incompressible Euler equations in an infinite pipe, which tend asymptotically to singular helical vortex filament evolved by the binormal curvature flow. The construction is based on studying a general semilinear elliptic problem in divergence form \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\varepsilon^2\text{div}(K(x)\nabla u)= (u-q|\ln\varepsilon|)^{p}_+,\ \ &x\in Ω,\\ u=0,\ \ &x\in\partial Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} for small values of $ \varepsilon. $ Helical vortex solutions concentrating near s…
We prove the existence of Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) type traveling fronts in space-time periodic and mean zero incompressible advection, and establish a variational (minimization) formula for the minimal speeds. We approach the existence by considering limit of a sequence of front solutions to a regularized traveling front equation where the nonlinearity is combustion type with ignition cut-off. The limiting front equation is degenerate parabolic and does not permit strong solutions, however, the necessary compactness follows from monotonicity of fronts and degenerate regularity. We …
We develop a new structure of the Green's function of a second-order elliptic operator in divergence form in a 2D bounded domain. Based on this structure and the theory of rearrangement of functions, we construct concentrated traveling-rotating helical vortex patches to 3D incompressible Euler equations in an infinite pipe. By solving an equation for vorticity \begin{equation*} w=\frac{1}{\varepsilon^2}f_\varepsilon\left(\mathcal{G}_{K_H}w-\fracα{2}|x|^2|\ln\varepsilon|\right) \ \ \text{in}\ Ω\end{equation*} for small $ \varepsilon>0 $ and considering a certain maximization problem for the vor…
We study traveling wave solutions of an equation for surface waves of moderate amplitude arising as a shallow water approximation of the Euler equations for inviscid, incompressible and homogenous fluids. We obtain solitary waves of elevation and depression, including a family of solitary waves with compact support, where the amplitude may increase or decrease with respect to the wave speed. Our approach is based on techniques from dynamical systems and relies on a reformulation of the evolution equation as an autonomous Hamiltonian system which facilitates an explicit expression for bounded o…
We consider the interaction between an incompressible, viscous fluid modeled by the dynamic Stokes equation and a multilayered poroelastic structure which consists of a thin, linear, poroelastic plate layer (in direct contact with the free Stokes flow) and a thick Biot layer. The fluid flow and the elastodynamics of the multilayered poroelastic structure are fully coupled across a fixed interface through physical coupling conditions (including the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman condition), which present mathematical challenges related to the regularity of associated velocity traces. We prove existence…
In this paper, we present strong numerical evidences that the incompressible axisymmetric Euler equations with degenerate viscosity coefficients and smooth initial data of finite energy develop a potential finite-time locally self-similar singularity at the origin. An important feature of this potential singularity is that the solution develops a two-scale traveling wave that travels towards the origin. The two-scale feature is characterized by the scaling property that the center of the traveling wave is located at a ring of radius $O((T-t)^{1/2})$ surrounding the symmetry axis while the thic…
We consider the existence of periodic traveling waves in a bidirectional Whitham equation, combining the full two-way dispersion relation from the incompressible Euler equations with a canonical shallow water nonlinearity. Of particular interest is the existence of a highest, cusped, traveling wave solution, which we obtain as a limiting case at the end of the main bifurcation branch of $2π$-periodic traveling wave solutions continuing from the zero state. Unlike the unidirectional Whitham equation, containing only one branch of the full Euler dispersion relation, where such a highest wave beh…
In this paper, we analyze the behavior of viscous shock profiles of one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with a singular pressure law which encodes the effects of congestion. As the intensity of the singular pressure tends to 0, we show the convergence of these profiles towards free-congested traveling front solutions of a two-phase compressible-incompressible Navier-Stokes system and we provide a refined description of the profiles in the vicinity of the transition between the free domain and the congested domain. In the second part of the paper, we prove that the profiles are…
In this announcement, we report results on the existence of families of large-amplitude internal hydrodynamic bores. These are traveling front solutions of the full two-phase incompressible Euler equation in two dimensions. The fluids are bounded above and below by flat horizontal walls and acted upon by gravity. We obtain continuous curves of solutions to this system that bifurcate from the trivial solution where the interface is flat. Following these families to the their extreme, the internal interface either overturns, comes into contact with the upper wall, or develops a highly degenerate…
We consider several different bidirectional Whitham equations that have recently appeared in the literature. Each of these models combine the full two-way dispersion relation from the incompressible Euler equations with a canonical shallow water nonlinearity, providing nonlocal model equations that may be expected to exhibit some of the interesting high-frequency phenomena present in the Euler equations that standard "long-wave" theories fail to capture. Of particular interest here is the existence and stability of periodic traveling wave solutions in such models. Using numerical bifurcation t…
This paper studies the nonlinear stability of capillary-gravity waves propagating along the interface dividing two immiscible fluid layers of finite depth. The motion in both regions is governed by the incompressible and irrotational Euler equations, with the density of each fluid being constant but distinct. A diverse collection of small-amplitude solitary wave solutions for this system have been constructed by several authors in the case of strong surface tension (as measured by the Bond number) and slightly subcritical Froude number. We prove that all of these waves are (conditionally) orbi…
At the continuous level, we consider two types of tumor growth models: the cell density model, which is based on the fluid mechanical construction, is more favorable for scientific interpretation and numerical simulations; and the free boundary model, as the incompressible limit of the former, is more tractable when investigating the boundary propagation. In this work, we aim to investigate the boundary propagation speeds in those models based on asymptotic analysis of the free boundary model and efficient numerical simulations of the cell density model. We derive, for the first time, some ana…
The determining modes for the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) are shown to satisfy an ordinary differential equation of the form $dv/dt=F(v)$, in the Banach space, $X$, of all bounded continuous functions of the variable $s\in\mathbb{R}$ with values in certain finite-dimensional linear space. This new evolution ODE, named {\it determining form}, induces an infinite-dimensional dynamical system in the space $X$ which is noteworthy for two reasons. One is that $F$ is globally Lipschitz from $X$ into itself. The other is that the long-term dynamics of the determining …
