We propose an exact summation method to compute thermodynamic observables in integrable quantum field theories. The key idea is to use the matrix-tree theorem to write the Gaudin determinants that appear in the cluster expansion as a sum over graphs. For theories with a diagonal S-matrix, this method is more powerful than the standard Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) technique as it is exact to all orders of powers in inverse volume. We have obtained using this method the TBA equation, the excited state energies in finite volume, the Leclair-Mussardo formula for one point functions, the finite-temperature boundary entropy and cumulants of conserved charges in Generalized Gibbs Ensembles. Moreover, the graph expansion can also be regarded as an alternative to algebraic manipulations involving Gaudin determinants. We have applied this idea to derive the equations of state and other transport properties in Generalized Hydrodynamics. For theories with a non-diagonal S-matrix, the description of a complete set of states is more involved and it is not known how a cluster expansion can be implemented. It is nevertheless possible to apply the direct summation method in reverse and interpret known TBA equations with complex strings in terms of diagrams.
The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz approach to the study of integrable quantum field theories was introduced in the early 90s. Since then it has been known that the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations can be recast in the form of $Y$-systems. These $Y$-systems have a number of interesting properties, notably in the high-temperature limit their solutions are constants from which the central charge of the ultraviolet fixed point can be obtained and they are typically periodic functions, with period proportional to the dimension of the perturbing field. In this letter we discuss the derivation of $Y…
The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz is applied to a quantum integrable spin chain associated with the Lie superalgebra osp(1|2). Using the string hypothesis, we derive a set of infinite number of non-linear integral equations (thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equation), which characterize the free energy. The low temperature limit of the free energy is also discussed.
We propose a system of nonlinear integral equations (NLIE), which gives the free energy of the osp(1|2s) integrable spin chain at finite temperatures. In contrast with usual thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations, our new NLIE contain only a finite number of unknown functions. On deriving NLIE, we use our osp(1|2s) version of the T-system and the quantum transfer matrix method. Based on our NLIE, we also calculate the high temperature expansion of the free energy and the specific heat.
We study $N$=2 supersymmetric integrable theories with spontaneously-broken \Zn\ symmetry. They have exact soliton masses given by the affine $SU(n)$ Toda masses and fractional fermion numbers given by multiples of $1/n$. The basic such $N$=2 integrable theory is the $A_n$-type $N$=2 minimal model perturbed by the most relevant operator. The soliton content and exact S-matrices are obtained using the Landau-Ginzburg description. We study the thermodynamics of these theories and calculate the ground-state energies exactly, verifying that they have the correct conformal limits. We conjecture tha…
We study on-shell and off-shell properties of the supersymmetric sinh-Gordon and perturbed SUSY Yang-Lee models using the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz and form factors. Identifying the supersymmetric models with the Eight Vertex Free Fermion Model, we derive inversion relation for inhomogeneous transfer matrix and TBA equations and get correct UV results. We obtain two-point form factors of the trace of energy-momentum tensor using the Watson equations and their SUSY transformations. As an application, we compute the UV central charge using these form factors and spectral representation of the $…
We study the form factors of local operators of integrable QFT's between states with finite energy density. These states arise, for example, at finite temperature, or from a generalized Gibbs ensemble. We generalize Smirnov's form factor axioms, formulating them for a set of particle/hole excitations on top of the thermodynamic background, instead of the vacuum. We show that exact form factors can be found as minimal solutions of these new axioms. The thermodynamic form factors can be used to construct correlation functions on thermodynamic states. The expression found for the two-point functi…
The surface free energy is the difference between the free energies for a system with open boundary conditions and the same system with periodic boundary conditions. We use the quantum transfer matrix formalism to express the surface free energy in the thermodynamic limit of systems with integrable boundary conditions as a matrix element of certain projection operators. Specializing to the XXZ spin 1/2 chain we introduce a novel `finite temperature boundary operator' which characterizes the thermodynamical properties of surfaces related to integrable boundary conditions.
We consider a two-parameter $(\bar c, \tilde c)$ family of quantum integrable Hamiltonians for a chain of alternating spins of spin $s=1/2$ and $s=1$. We determine the thermodynamics for low-temperature $T$ and small external magnetic field $H$, with $T << H$. In the antiferromagnetic $(\bar c > 0, \tilde c > 0)$ case, the model has two gapless excitations. In particular, for $\bar c = \tilde c$, the model is conformally invariant and has central charge $c_{vir} = 2$. When one of these parameters is zero, the Bethe Ansatz equations admit an infinite number of solutions with lowest energy.
The specific heat and the compressibility for the integrable t-J model are calculated showing Luttinger liquid behavior for low temperatures. A Trotter-Suzuki mapping and the quantum transfer matrix approach are utilized. Using an algebraic Bethe ansatz this method permits the exact calculation of the free energy and related quantities. A set of just two non-linear integral equations determining these quantities is studied for various particle densities and temperatures. The structure of the specific heat is discussed in terms of the elementary charge as well as spin excitations.
We propose a boundary thermodynamic Bethe ansatz calculation technique to obtain the Loschmidt echo and the statistics of the work done when a global quantum quench is performed on an integrable quantum field theory. We derive an analytic expression for the lowest edge of the probability density function and find that it exhibits universal features, in the sense that its scaling form depends only on the statistics of excitations. We perform numerical calculations on the sinh-Gordon model, a deformation of the free boson theory, and we obtain that by turning on the interaction the density funct…
Further formulas are presented involving quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, and integrable systems. Modifications of dispersionless theory are developed.
The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) and the excited state TBA equations for an integrable spin chain related to the Lie superalgebra osp(1|2) are proposed by the quantum transfer matrix (QTM) method. We introduce the fusion hierarchy of the QTM and derive the functional relations among them (T-system) and their certain combinations (Y-system). Their analytical property leads to the non-linear integral equations which describe the free energy and the correlation length at any finite temperatures. With regard to the free energy, they coincide with the TBA equation (math-ph/9911010, Mod. Phys. L…
Finite temperature correlation functions in integrable quantum field theories are formulated only in terms of the usual, temperature-independent form factors, and certain thermodynamic filling fractions which are determined from the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz. Explicit expressions are given for the one and two-point functions.
Finding out root patterns of quantum integrable models is an important step to study their physical properties in the thermodynamic limit. Especially for models without $U(1)$ symmetry, their spectra are usually given by inhomogeneous $T-Q$ relations and the Bethe root patterns are still unclear. In this paper with the antiperiodic $XXZ$ spin chain as an example, an analytic method to derive both the Bethe root patterns and the transfer-matrix root patterns in the thermodynamic limit is proposed. Based on them the ground state energy and elementary excitations in the gapped regime are derived.…
We study the behaviour of Rényi entropies in a generic thermodynamic macrostate of an integrable model. In the standard quench action approach to quench dynamics, the Rényi entropies may be derived from the overlaps of the initial state with Bethe eigenstates. These overlaps fix the driving term in the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) formalism. We show that this driving term can be also reconstructed starting from the macrostate's particle densities. We then compute explicitly the stationary Rényi entropies after the quench from the dimer and the tilted Néel state in XXZ spin chains. For the …
Entropy is a fundamental concept in equilibrium statistical mechanics, yet its origin in the non-equilibrium dynamics of isolated quantum systems is not fully understood. A strong consensus is emerging around the idea that the stationary thermodynamic entropy is the von Neumann entanglement entropy of a large subsystem embedded in an infinite system. Also motivated by cold-atom experiments, here we consider the generalisation to Renyi entropies. We develop a new technique to calculate the diagonal Renyi entropy in the quench action formalism. In the spirit of the replica treatment for the enta…
We construct the quantum versions of the monodromy matrices of KdV theory. The traces of these quantum monodromy matrices, which will be called as ``${\bf T}$-operators'', act in highest weight Virasoro modules. The ${\bf T}$-operators depend on the spectral parameter $λ$ and their expansion around $λ= \infty$ generates an infinite set of commuting Hamiltonians of the quantum KdV system. The ${\bf T}$-operators can be viewed as the continuous field theory versions of the commuting transfer-matrices of integrable lattice theory. In particular, we show that for the values $c=1-3{{(2n+1)^2}\over …
Within the generalized hydrodynamics (GHD) formalism for quantum integrable models, it is possible to compute simple expressions for a number of correlation functions at the Eulerian scale. Specializing to integrable relativistic field theories, we show the same correlators can be computed as a sum over form factors, the GHD regime corresponding to the leading contribution with one particle-hole pair on a finite energy-density background. The thermodynamic bootstrap program (TBP) formalism was recently introduced as an axiomatic approach to computing such finite-energy-density form factors for…
We consider four-point integrals arising in the planar limit of the conformal "fishnet" theory in four dimensions. They define a two-parameter family of higher-loop Feynman integrals, which extend the series of ladder integrals and were argued, based on integrability and analyticity, to admit matrix-model-like integral and determinantal representations. In this paper, we prove the equivalence of all these representations using exact summation and integration techniques. We then analyze the large-order behaviour, corresponding to the thermodynamic limit of a large fishnet graph. The saddle-poin…
We introduce an extension of the generalised $T\bar{T}$-deformation described by Smirnov-Zamolodchikov, to include the complete set of extensive charges. We show that this gives deformations of S-matrices beyond CDD factors, generating arbitrary functional dependence on momenta. We further derive from basic principles of statistical mechanics the flow equations for the free energy and all free energy fluxes. From this follows, without invoking the microscopic Bethe ansatz or other methods from integrability, that the thermodynamics of the deformed models are described by the integral equations…
We evaluate the exact energy current and scaled cumulant generating function (related to the large-deviation function) in non-equilibrium steady states with energy flow, in any integrable model of relativistic quantum field theory (IQFT) with diagonal scattering. Our derivations are based on various recent results of D. Bernard and B. Doyon. The steady states are built by connecting homogeneously two infinite halves of the system thermalized at different temperatures $T_l$, $T_r$, and waiting for a long time. We evaluate the current $J(T_l,T_r)$ using the exact QFT density matrix describing th…
We present an intuitive diagrammatic representation of a new class of integrable $\s$-models. It is shown that to any given diagram corresponds an integrable theory that couples $N$ WZW models with a certain number of each of the following four fundamental integrable models, the PCM, the YB model, both based on a group $G$, the isotropic $\s$-model on the symmetric space $G/H$ and the YB model on the symmetric space $G/H$. To each vertex of a diagram we assign the matrix of one of the aforementioned fundamental integrable theories. Any two vertices may be connected with a number of lines havin…
The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method is employed for the study of the integrable critical $RSOS(q_{1}, q_{2};q)$ model. The high and low temperature behavior are investigated, and the central charge of the effective conformal field theory is derived. The obtained central charge is expressed as the sum of the central charges of two generalized coset models.
A Trotter-Suzuki mapping is used to calculate the finite-temperature properties of the one-dimensional supersymmetric $t-J$ model. This approach allows for the exact calculation of various thermodynamical properties by means of the quantum transfer matrix (QTM). The free energy and other interesting quantities are obtained such as the specific heat and compressibility. For the largest eigenvalue of the QTM leading to the free energy a set of just two non-linear integral equations is presented. These equations are studied analytically and numerically for different particle densities and tempera…
We study a series of $N\!=\!1$ supersymmetric integrable particle theories in $d=1+1$ dimensions. These theories are represented as integrable perturbations of specific $N\!=\!1$ superconformal field theories. Starting from the conjectured $S$-matrices for these theories, we develop the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA), where we use that the 2-particle $S$-matrices satisfy a free fermion condition. Our analysis proves a conjecture by E.~Melzer, who proposed that these $N\!=\!1$ supersymmetric TBA systems are ``folded'' versions of $N\!=\!2$ supersymmetric TBA systems that were first studied by…
We propose scattering matrices for N=1 supersymmetric integrable quantum field theories in 1+1 dimensions which involve unstable particles in their spectra. By means of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz we analyze the ultraviolet behaviour of some of these theories and identify the effective Virasoro central charge of the underlying conformal field theories.
For the exactly solved reduced BCS model an electrostatic analogy exists; in particular it served to obtain the exact thermodynamic limit of the model from the Richardson Bethe ansatz equations. We present an electrostatic analogy for a wider class of integrable Hamiltonians with pairing force interactions. We apply it to obtain the exact thermodynamic limit of this class of models. To verify the analytical results, we compare them with numerical solutions of the Bethe ansatz equations for finite systems at half-filling for the ground state.
Two different theoretical formulations of the finite temperature effects have been recently proposed for integrable field theories. In order to decide which of them is the correct one, we perform for a particular model an explicit check of their predictions for the one-point function of the trace of the stress-energy tensor, a quantity which can be independently determined by the Thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz.
We put forward an idea that the boundary entropy associated with integrable massless flow of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) is identified with tachyon action of boundary string field theory. We show that the temperature parameterizing a massless flow in the TBA formalism can be identified with tachyon energy for the classical action at least near the ultraviolet fixed point, i.e. the open string vacuum.
The thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz equations that have been proposed to describe massive integrable deformations of the coset conformal field theories $g_k\times g_l/g_{k+l}$ are shown to result directly by applying the usual thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz arguments to the trigonometric $S$-matrices for the algebras $g=a_{m-1}$.
We represent the density matrix of a finite segment of the integrable isotropic spin-1 chain in the thermodynamic limit as a multiple integral. Our integral formula is valid at finite temperature and also includes a homogeneous magnetic field.
We analyze the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz (TBA) for various integrable S-matrices in the context of generalized $T\bar T$ deformations. We focus on the sinh-Gordon model and its elliptic deformation in both its fermionic and bosonic realizations. We confirm that the determining factor for a turning point in the TBA, interpreted as a finite Hagedorn temperature, is the difference between the number of bound states and resonances in the theory. Implementing the numerical pseudo-arclength continuation method, we are able to follow the solutions to the TBA equations past the turning point all the …
We construct a topological invariant of the renormalization group trajectories of a large class of 2D quantum integrable models, described by the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz approach. A geometrical description of this invariant in terms of triangulations of three-dimensional manifolds is proposed and associated dilogarithm identities are proven.
We consider a special double scaling limit, recently introduced by two of the authors, combining weak coupling and large imaginary twist, for the $γ$-twisted $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory. We also establish the analogous limit for ABJM theory. The resulting non-gauge chiral 4D and 3D theories of interacting scalars and fermions are integrable in the planar limit. In spite of the breakdown of conformality by double-trace interactions, most of the correlators for local operators of these theories are conformal, with non-trivial anomalous dimensions defined by specific, integrable Feynman diagrams. …
In arXiv:0908.4052, Nekrasov and Shatashvili pointed out that the N=2 instanton partition function in a special limit of the Omega-deformation parameters is characterized by certain thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) like equations. In this work we present an explicit derivation of this fact as well as generalizations to quiver gauge theories. To do so we combine various techniques like the iterated Mayer expansion, the method of expansion by regions, and the path integral tricks for non-perturbative summation. The TBA equations derived entirely within gauge theory have been proposed to encode t…
We give a pedagogical introduction to the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, a method that allows us to describe the thermodynamics of integrable models whose spectrum is found via the (asymptotic) Bethe ansatz. We set the stage by deriving the Fermi-Dirac distribution and associated free energy of free electrons, and then in a similar though technically more complicated fashion treat the thermodynamics of integrable models, focusing on the one dimensional Bose gas with delta function interaction as a clean pedagogical example, secondly the XXX spin chain as an elementary (lattice) model with prototy…
We review recent developments in the study of gluon scattering amplitudes of the four-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling based on the gauge/string duality and its underlying integrability. The scattering amplitudes are given by the area of minimal surfaces in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space with a null polygonal boundary. These minimal surfaces are described by integral equations of the form of the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations. Generalizing the result regarding the six-point amplitudes, we observe a general connection between the minimal sur…
We consider the problem of analytically continuing energies computed with the Bethe ansatz, as posed by the study of non-compact integrable spin chains. By introducing an imaginary extensive twist in the Bethe equations, we show that one can expand the analytic continuation of energies in the scaling limit around another 'pseudo-vacuum' sitting at a negative number of Bethe roots, in the same way as around the usual pseudo-vacuum. We show that this method can be used to compute the energy levels of some states of the $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ integrable spin chain in the infinite-volume limit, and as…

Recently, a set of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations is proposed by Dorey, Pocklington and Tateo for unitary minimal models perturbed by ϕ_{1,2} or ϕ_{2,1} operator. We examine their results in view of the lattice analogues, dilute A_L models at regime 1 and 2. Taking M_{5,6}+ϕ_{1,2} and M_{3,4}+ϕ_{2,1} as the simplest examples, we will explicitly show that the conjectured TBA equations can be recovered from the lattice model in a scaling limit.
Two implicit periodic structures in the solution of sinh-Gordon thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equation are considered. The analytic structure of the solution as a function of complex $θ$ is studied to some extent both analytically and numerically. The results make a hint how the CFT integrable structures can be relevant in the sinh-Gordon and staircase models. More motivations are figured out for subsequent studies of the massless sinh-Gordon (i.e. Liouville) TBA equation.
We make an attempt to map the integrable boundary conditions for 2 dimensional non-linear O(N) $σ$-models. We do it at various levels: classically, by demanding the existence of infinitely many conserved local charges and also by constructing the double row transfer matrix from the Lax connection, which leads to the spectral curve formulation of the problem; at the quantum level, we describe the solutions of the boundary Yang-Baxter equation and derive the Bethe-Yang equations. We then show how to connect the thermodynamic limit of the boundary Bethe-Yang equations to the spectral curve.
This PhD thesis explores the similarities between integrable spin chains and quantum field theories, such as Super Yang Mills. We first study integrable spin chains and build explicitly a polynomial "Backlund flow" and polynomial "Q-operators", which allow to diagonalize the Hamiltonian. We then study integrable field theories et show how to obtain "Q-functions", analogous to the Q-operators built for spin chains. It turns out that several important informations are contained in the analytic properties of these Q -functions. That allows to obtain, in the framework of the thermodynamic Bethe an…
An $S$-matrix is proposed for the two dimensional O(3) $σ$-model with a dynamical $θ$-term (axion model). Exploiting an Abelian T-duality transformation connecting the axion model to an integrable SU(2)$\times$U(1) symmetric principal $σ$-model, strong evidence is presented for the correctness of the proposed $S$-matrix by comparing the perturbatively calculated free energies with the ones based on the Thermodynamical Bethe Ansatz. This T-duality transformation also leads to a new Lax-pair for both models. The quantum non-integrability of the O(3) $σ$-model with a {\sl constant} $θ$-term, in c…

The covariant Noether charge formalism (also known as the covariant phase method) of Wald and collaborators, including its cohomological extension, is a manifestly covariant Hamiltonian formalism that, in principle, allows one to define and compute the energy, angular momenta, and chemical potentials of generic solutions of gravitational theories. However, it has been observed that for some supergravity solutions the variation of the Noether charge is not (at least manifestably) integrable, and as a result it is unclear whether there are well-defined thermodynamic charges for these solutions. …
In this paper we compute the scaling functions of the effective central charges for various quantum integrable models in a deep ultraviolet region $R\to 0$ using two independent methods. One is based on the ``reflection amplitudes'' of the (super-)Liouville field theory where the scaling functions are given by the conjugate momentum to the zero-modes. The conjugate momentum is quantized for the sinh-Gordon, the Bullough-Dodd, and the super sinh-Gordon models where the quantization conditions depend on the size $R$ of the system and the reflection amplitudes. The other method is to solve the st…
The structure of a new family of factorised $S$-matrix theories with resonance poles is reviewed. They are conjectured to correspond to the Homogeneous sine-Gordon theories associated with simply laced compact Lie groups. Two of their more remarkable properties are, first, that some of the resonance poles can be traced to the presence of unstable particles in the spectrum, and, second, that they involve several independent mass scales. The conjectured relationship with the simply laced HSG theories has been checked by means of the Thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA) and, more recently, through th…
We describe an integrable model, related to the Gaudin magnet, and its relation to the matrix model of Brezin, Itzykson, Parisi and Zuber. Relation is based on Bethe ansatz for the integrable model and its interpretation using orthogonal polynomials and saddle point approximation. Lagre $N$ limit of the matrix model corresponds to the thermodynamic limit of the integrable system. In this limit (functional) Bethe ansatz is the same as the generating function for correlators of the matrix models.
We conjecture the factorized scattering description for OSP(m/2n)/OSP(m-1/2n) supersphere sigma models and OSP(m/2n) Gross Neveu models. The non-unitarity of these field theories translates into a lack of `physical unitarity' of the S matrices, which are instead unitary with respect to the non-positive scalar product inherited from the orthosymplectic structure. Nevertheless, we find that formal thermodynamic Bethe ansatz calculations appear meaningful, reproduce the correct central charges, and agree with perturbative calculations. This paves the way to a more thorough study of these and othe…
Thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations are coupled non-linear integral equations which appear frequently when solving integrable models. Those associated with models with N=2 supersymmetry can be related to differential equations, among them Painleve III and the Toda hierarchy. In the simplest such case the massless limit of these non-linear integral equations can be solved in terms of the Airy function. This is the only known closed-form solution of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations, outside of free or classical models. This turns out to give the spectral determinant of the Schrodinger equat…
We develop a method of computing the excited state energies in Integrable Quantum Field Theories (IQFT) in finite geometry, with spatial coordinate compactified on a circle of circumference R. The IQFT ``commuting transfer-matrices'' introduced by us (BLZ) for Conformal Field Theories (CFT) are generalized to non-conformal IQFT obtained by perturbing CFT with the operator $Φ_{1,3}$. We study the models in which the fusion relations for these ``transfer-matrices'' truncate and provide closed integral equations which generalize the equations of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz to excited states. The e…
