The independence complex $\mathrm{Ind}(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the simplicial complex formed by its independent sets. This article introduces a deformation of the simplicial boundary map of $\mathrm{Ind}(G)$ that gives rise to a double complex with trivial homology. Filtering this double complex in the right direction induces a spectral sequence that converges to zero and contains on its first page the homology of the independence complexes of $G$ and various subgraphs of $G$, obtained by removing independent sets and their neighborhoods from $G$. It is shown that this spectral sequence may be used to study the homology of $\mathrm{Ind}(G)$. Furthermore, a careful investigation of the sequence's first page exhibits a relation between the cardinality of maximal independent sets in $G$ and the vanishing of certain homology groups of the independence complexes of some subgraphs of $G$. This relation is shown to hold for all paths and cyclic graphs.
We consider a $q$-analogue of abstract simplicial complexes, called $q$-complexes, and discuss the notion of shellability for such complexes. It is shown that $q$-complexes formed by independent subspaces of a $q$-matroid are shellable. Further, we explicitly determine the homology of $q$-complexes corresponding to uniform $q$-matroids. We also outline some partial results concerning the determination of homology of arbitrary shellable $q$-complexes..
We use two cofibre sequences to identify some combinatorial situations when the independence complex of a graph splits into a wedge sum of smaller independence complexes. Our main application is to give a recursive relation for the homotopy types of the independence complexes of powers of cycles, which answers an open question of D. Kozlov.
We determine the homotopy types of the independence complexes of the $(n \times 6)$-square grid graphs. In fact, we show that these complexes are homotopy equivalent to wedges of spheres.
We prove that the independence complexes of some grids have exponential Betti numbers. This corresponds to the number of ground states in the hard-core model in statistical physics with fermions in the vertices of the grid.
We introduce the weighted path homology on the category of weigh\-ted directed hypergraphs and describe conditions of homotopy invariance of weighted path homology groups. We give several examples that explain the nontriviality of the introduced notions.
We show that if a graph $G$ involves a certain square grid graph as a full subgraph, then a certain operation on it yields a simplicial suspension of the independence complex of $G$. This generalizes a result of Csorba. As a corollary, we determine the simple homotopy types of the independence complexes of some grid graphs.
We show that the independence complexes of generalised Mycielskian of complete graphs are homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of spheres, and determine the number of copies and the dimensions of these spheres. We also prove that the independence complexes of categorical product of complete graphs are wedge sum of circles, upto homotopy. Further, we show that if we perturb a graph $G$ in a certain way, then the independence complex of this new graph is homotopy equivalent to the suspension of the independence complex of $G$.
We introduce the notion of \textit{star cluster} of a simplex in a simplicial complex. This concept provides a general tool to study the topology of independence complexes of graphs. We use star clusters to answer a question arisen from works of Engström and Jonsson on the homotopy type of independence complexes of triangle-free graphs and to investigate a large number of examples which appear in the literature. We present an alternative way to study the chromatic number of a graph from a homotopical point of view and obtain new results regarding the connectivity of independence complexes.
In this article, we introduce the notion of a wedge of graphs and provide detailed computations for the independence complex of a wedge of path and cycle graphs. In particular, we show that these complexes are either contractible or wedges of spheres.
Chessboard complexes and their relatives have been one of important recurring themes of topological combinatorics. Closely related ``cycle-free chessboard complexes'' have been recently introduced by Ault and Fiedorowicz as a tool for computing symmetric analogues of the cyclic homology of algebras. We study connectivity properties of these complexes and prove a result that confirms a strengthened conjecture of Ault and Fiedorowicz.
The topology of the matching complex for the $2\times n$ grid graph is mysterious. We describe a discrete Morse matching for a family of independence complexes $\mathrm{Ind}(Δ_n^m)$ that include these matching complexes. Using this matching, we determine the dimensions of the chain spaces for the resulting Morse complexes and derive bounds on the location of non-trivial homology groups for certain $\mathrm{Ind}(Δ_n^m)$. Further, we determine the Euler characteristic of $\mathrm{Ind}(Δ_n^m)$ and prove that several homology groups of $\mathrm{Ind}(Δ_n^m)$ are non-zero.
The independence complex of a graph G is a simplicial complex whose simplices are the independent sets in G. In the last couple of decades, the independence complexes of square grids (with various boundary conditions) have gained much attention because of their connections with the hard square model from statistical physics. In this article, we prove that if G is an $m\times n$ grid with open or cylindrical boundary condition then its independence complex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. A part of this result settles a conjecture of Iriye.
For $r\geq 1$, the $r$-independence complex of a graph $G$ is a simplicial complex whose faces are subset $I \subseteq V(G)$ such that each component of the induced subgraph $G[I]$ has at most $r$ vertices. In this article, we determine the homotopy type of $r$-independence complexes of certain families of graphs including complete $s$-partite graphs, fully whiskered graphs, cycle graphs and perfect $m$-ary trees. In each case, these complexes are either homotopic to a wedge of equi-dimensional spheres or are contractible. We also give a closed form formula for their homotopy types.
The theory of complexes of directed trees was initiated by Kozlov to answer a question by Stanley, and later on, results from the theory were used by Babson and Kozlov in their proof of the Lovasz conjecture. We develop the theory and prove that complexes on directed acyclic graphs are shellable. A related concept is that of independence complexes: construct a simplicial complex on the vertex set of a graph, by including each independent set of vertices as a simplex. Two theorems used for breaking and gluing such complexes are proved and applied to generalize results by Kozlov. A fruitful rest…
We study random simplicial complexes in the multi-parameter upper model. In this model simplices of various dimensions are taken randomly and independently, and our random simplicial complex $Y$ is then taken to be the minimal simplicial complex containing this collection of simplices. We study the asymptotic behavior of the homology of $Y$ as the number of vertices goes to $\infty$. We observe the following phenomenon asymptotically almost surely. The given probabilities with which the simplices are taken determine a range of dimensions $\ell \leq k \leq \ell'$ with $\ell' \leq 2\ell +1$, out…
For integers n\geq 1, k\geq 0, the stable Kneser graph SG_{n,k} (also called the Schrijver graph) has as vertex set the stable n-subsets of [2n+k] and as edges disjoint pairs of n-subsets, where a stable n-subset is one that does not contain any 2-subset of the form {i,i+1} or {1,2n+k}. The stable Kneser graphs have been an interesting object of study since the late 1970's when A. Schrijver determined that they are a vertex critical class of graphs with chromatic number k+2. This article contains a study of the independence complexes of SG_{n,k} for small values of n and k. Our contributions a…
In this paper, we compute the homology coalgebra and cohomology algebra over a field of all generalized moment-angle complexes and give a duality theorem on complementary moment-angle complexes.
A careful account is given of generalized equivariant homology theories on the category of topological pairs acted on by a group. In particular, upon restriction to the category of equivariant simplicial complexes, the equivalence of equivariant simplicial homology (also known as Bredon homology), the second derived term of the Atiyah--Hirzebruch spectral sequence, and equivariant singular homology is demonstrated.
We compute the homology of random Čech complexes over a homogeneous Poisson process on the d-dimensional torus, and show that there are, coarsely, two phase transitions. The first transition is analogous to the Erdős-Rényi phase transition, where the Čech complex becomes connected. The second transition is where all the other homology groups are computed correctly (almost simultaneously). Our calculations also suggest a finer measurement of scales, where there is a further refinement to this picture and separation between different homology groups.
For $r\geq 1$, the $r$-independence complex of a graph $G$, denoted Ind$_r(G)$, is a simplicial complex whose faces are subsets $A \subseteq V(G)$ such that each component of the induced subgraph $G[A]$ has at most $r$ vertices. In this article, we establish a relation between the distance $r$-domination number of $G$ and (homological) connectivity of Ind$_r(G)$. We also prove that Ind$_r(G)$, for a chordal graph $G$, is either contractible or homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. Given a wedge of spheres, we also provide a construction of a chordal graph whose $r$-independence complex ha…
The random $2$-dimensional simplicial complex process starts with a complete graph on $n$ vertices, and in every step a new $2$-dimensional face, chosen uniformly at random, is added. We prove that with probability tending to $1$ as $n\to\infty$, the first homology group over $\mathbb Z$ vanishes at the very moment when all the edges are covered by triangular faces.
We classify flag complexes on at most 12 vertices with torsion in the first homology group. The result is moderately computer-aided. As a consequence we confirm a folklore conjecture that the smallest poset whose order complex is homotopy equivalent to the real projective plane (and also the smallest poset with torsion in the first homology group) has exactly 13 elements.
Let Y ~ Y_d(n,p) denote the Bernoulli random d-dimensional simplicial complex. We answer a question of Linial and Meshulam from 2003, showing that the threshold for vanishing of homology H_{d-1}(Y; Z) is less than 80d log n / n. This bound is tight, up to a constant factor.
For each finite simple graph $G$, Aharoni, Berger and Ziv consider a recursively defined number $ψ(G) \in \mathbb{Z}\cup \{+ \infty \}$ which gives a lower bound for the topological connectivity of the independence complex $I_G$. They conjecture that this bound is optimal for every graph. We use a result of recursion theory to give a short disproof of this claim.
This survey describes some useful properties of the local homology of abstract simplicial complexes. Although the existing literature on local homology is somewhat dispersed, it is largely dedicated to the study of manifolds, submanifolds, or samplings thereof. While this is a vital perspective, the focus of this survey is squarely on the local homology of abstract simplicial complexes. Our motivation comes from the needs of the analysis of hypergraphs and graphs. In addition to presenting many classical facts in a unified way, this survey presents a few new results about how local homology ge…
We consider a certain class of simplicial complexes which includes the independence complexes of forests. We show that if a simplicial complex $K$ belongs to this class, then the polyhedral join $\mathcal{Z}^*_{K}(\underline{X}, \emptyset)$ is homotopy equivalent to a wedge sum of CW complexes of the form $Σ^r X_{i_1} * X_{i_2} * \cdots * X_{i_k}$, where $\underline{X}$ is a family $\{X_i\}_{i \in V(K)}$ of CW complexes and $Σ$ denotes the unreduced suspension. This result is applied to study the homotopy type of the independence complex of the lexicographic product $G[H]$ of a graph $H$ over …
We use the Taylor resolution of a monomial ideal to compute the Tor algebra of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complement of a simplicial complex.
Weighted hypergraphs are generalizations of weighted simplicial complexes. In recent years, weighted Laplacians of weighted simplicial complexes have been studied. In 2016, as a generalization of the homology of simplicial complexes, the embedded homology of hypergraphs was constructed. In this paper, we generalize the weighted Laplacians of weighted simplicial complexes to weighted hypergraphs. We study the relations between the weighted Laplacians and the weighted embedded homology of weighted hypergraphs. We generalize the Hodge decompositions of weighted simplicial complexes to weighted hy…
We prove that the Bredon homology or cohomology of the partition complex with fairly general coefficients is either trivial or computable in terms of constructions with the Steinberg module. The argument involves developing a theory of Bredon homology and cohomology approximation.
The first author proved in a previous paper that the n-fold bar construction for commutative algebras can be generalized to E_n-algebras, and that one can calculate E_n-homology with trivial coefficients via this iterated bar construction. We extend this result to E_n-homology and E_n-cohomology of a commutative algebra A with coefficients in a symmetric A-bimodule.
We show that counterexamples of Iyengar and Walker to the algebraic version of Gunnar Carlsson's conjecture on the rank of the homology of a free complex can be extended to examples over any finite group with many choices of the complex.
We define the Coxeter cochain complex of a Coxeter group (G,S) with coefficients in a Z[G]-module A. This is closely related to the complex of simplicial cochains on the abstract simplicial complex I(S) of the commuting subsets of S. We give some representative computations of Coxeter cohomology and explain the connection between the Coxeter cohomology for groups of type A, the (singular) homology of certain configuration spaces, and the (Tor) homology of certain local Artin rings.
To any finite simplicial complex X, we associate a natural filtration starting from Chari and Joswig's discrete Morse complex and abutting to the matching complex of X. This construction leads to the definition of several homology theories, which we compute in a number of examples. We also completely determine the graded object associated to this filtration in terms of the homology of simpler complexes. This last result provides some connections to the number of vertex-disjoint cycles of a graph.
Given a chain complex with the only modification that each cell of the complex has a probability distribution assigned. We will call this complex - a random complex and what should be understood in practice, is that we have a classical chain complex whose cells appear and disappear according to some probability distributions. In this paper, we will try to find the stochastic homology of random complex, whose simplices have independent discrete distributions.
Hepworth, Willerton, Leinster and Shulman introduced the magnitude homology groups for enriched categories, in particular, for metric spaces. The purpose of this paper is to describe the magnitude homology group of a metric space in terms of order complexes of posets. In a metric space, an interval (the set of points between two chosen points) has a natural poset structure, which is called the interval poset. Under additional assumptions on sizes of $4$-cuts, we show that the magnitude chain complex can be constructed using tensor products, direct sums and degree shifts from order complexes of…
A simplicial complement P is a sequence of subsets of [m] and the simplicial complement P corresponds to a unique simplicial complex K with vertices in [m]. In this paper, we defined the homology of a simplicial complement $H_{i,σ}(Λ^{*,*}[P], d)$ over a principle ideal domain k and proved that $H_{*,*}(Λ[P], d)$ is isomorphic to the Tor of the corresponding face ring k(K) by the Taylor resolutions. As applications, we give methods to compute the ring structure of Tor_{*,*}^{k[x]}(k(K), k)$, $link_{K}σ$, $star_{K}σ$ and the cohomology of the generalized moment-angle complexes.
We introduce weighted versions of the classical Čech and Vietoris-Rips complexes. We show that a version of the Vietoris-Rips Lemma holds for these weighted complexes and that they enjoy appropriate stability properties. We also give some preliminary applications of these weighted complexes.
