We consider the localization number and metric dimension of certain graphs of diameter $2$, focusing on families of Kneser graphs and graphs without 4-cycles. For the Kneser graphs with diameter $2$, we find upper and lower bounds for the localization number and metric dimension, and in many cases these parameters differ only by an additive constant. Our results on the metric dimension of Kneser graphs improve on earlier ones, yielding exact values in infinitely many cases. We determine bounds on the localization number and metric dimension of Moore graphs of diameter $2$ and polarity graphs.
We study the localization game on dense random graphs. In this game, a {\em cop} $x$ tries to locate a {\em robber} $y$ by asking for the graph distance of $y$ from every vertex in a sequence of sets $W_1,W_2,\ldots,W_\ell$. We prove high probability upper and lower bounds for the minimum size of each $W_i$ that will guarantee that $x$ will be able to locate $y$.
A set of vertices $S$ \emph{resolves} a connected graph $G$ if every vertex is uniquely determined by its vector of distances to the vertices in $S$. The \emph{metric dimension} of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a resolving set of $G$. Let $\mathcal{G}_{β,D}$ be the set of graphs with metric dimension $β$ and diameter $D$. It is well-known that the minimum order of a graph in $\mathcal{G}_{β,D}$ is exactly $β+D$. The first contribution of this paper is to characterise the graphs in $\mathcal{G}_{β,D}$ with order $β+D$ for all values of $β$ and $D$. Such a characterisation was previously onl…
The metric dimension of a graph is the minimum size of a set of vertices such that each vertex is uniquely determined by the distances to the vertices of that set. Our aim is to upper-bound the order $n$ of a graph in terms of its diameter $d$ and metric dimension $k$. In general, the bound $n\leq d^k+k$ is known to hold. We prove a bound of the form $n=\mathcal{O}(kd^2)$ for trees and outerplanar graphs (for trees we determine the best possible bound and the corresponding extremal examples). More generally, for graphs having a tree decomposition of width $w$ and length $\ell$, we obtain a bou…
We describe some metric properties of incomparability graphs. We consider the problem of the existence of infinite paths, either induced or isometric, in the incomparability graph of a poset. Among other things, we show that if the incomparability graph of a poset is connected and has infinite diameter, then it contains an infinite induced path. Furthermore, if the diameter of the set of vertices of degree at least $3$ is infinite, then the graph contains as an induced subgraph either a comb or a kite.
The rapid development of DNA storage has brought the deletion and insertion channel to the front line of research. When the number of deletions is equal to the number of insertions, the Fixed Length Levenshtein (FLL) metric is the right measure for the distance between two words of the same length. Similar to any other metric, the size of a ball is one of the most fundamental parameters. In this work, we consider the minimum, maximum, and average size of a ball with radius one, in the FLL metric. The related minimum and the maximum size of a maximal anticode with diameter one are also consider…
In this paper we study the diameter of Inhomogeneous random graphs $G(n,κ,p)$ that are induced by irreducible kernels $κ$. The kernels we consider act on separable metric spaces and are almost everywhere continuous. We generalize results known for the Erdős-Rényi model $G(n,p)$ for several ranges of $p$. We find upper and lower bounds for the diameter of $G(n,κ,p)$ in terms of the expansion factor and two explicit constants that depend on the behavior of the kernel over partitions of the metric space.

A resolving set for a graph $Γ$ is a collection of vertices $S$, chosen so that for each vertex $v$, the list of distances from $v$ to the members of $S$ uniquely specifies $v$. The metric dimension $μ(Γ)$ is the smallest size of a resolving set for $Γ$. We consider the metric dimension of two families of incidence graphs: incidence graphs of symmetric designs, and incidence graphs of symmetric transversal designs (i.e. symmetric nets). These graphs are the bipartite distance-regular graphs of diameter $3$, and the bipartite, antipodal distance-regular graphs of diameter $4$, respectively. In …
Consider a graph $G$ drawn on a fixed surface, and assign to each vertex a list of colors of size at least two if $G$ is triangle-free and at least three otherwise. We prove that we can give each vertex a color from its list so that each monochromatic connected subgraph has bounded weak diameter (i.e., diameter measured in the metric of the whole graph $G$, not just the subgraph). In case that $G$ has bounded maximum degree, this implies that each connected monochromatic subgraph has bounded size. This solves a problem of Esperet and Joret for planar triangle-free graphs, and extends known res…
Let S be a surface of genus g with p punctures with negative Euler characteristic. We study the diameter of the $ε$-thick part of moduli space of S equipped with the Teichmüller or Thurston's Lipschitz metric. We show that the asymptotic behaviors in both metrics are of order $\log \frac{g+p}ε$. The same result also holds for the $ε$-thick part of the moduli space of metric graphs of rank n equipped with the Lipschitz metric. The proof involves a sorting algorithm that sorts an arbitrary labeled tree with n labels with simultaneous Whitehead moves, where the number of steps is of order log(n).
Diameter perfect codes form a natural generalization for perfect codes. They are based on the code-anticode bound which generalizes the sphere-packing bound. The code-anticode bound was proved by Delsarte for distance-regular graphs and it holds for some other metrics too. In this paper we prove the bound for non-binary constant-weight codes with the Hamming metric and characterize the diameter perfect codes and the maximum size anticodes for these codes. We distinguish between six families of non-binary diameter constant-weight codes and four families of maximum size non-binary constant-weigh…
Let X be a group with identity e, let A be an infinite set of generators for X, and let (X,d_A) be the metric space with the word metric d_A induced by A. If the diameter of the space is infinite, then for every positive integer h there are infinitely many elements x in X with d_A(e,x)=h. It is proved that if P is a nonempty finite set of prime numbers and A is the set of positive integers whose prime factors all belong to P, then the diameter of the metric space (\Z,d_A) is infinite. Let λ_A(h) denote the smallest positive integer x with d_A(e,x)=h. It is an open problem to compute λ_A(h) and…
We study the asymptotic growth of the diameter of a graph obtained by adding sparse "long" edges to a square box in $\Z^d$. We focus on the cases when an edge between $x$ and $y$ is added with probability decaying with the Euclidean distance as $|x-y|^{-s+o(1)}$ when $|x-y|\to\infty$. For $s\in(d,2d)$ we show that the graph diameter for the graph reduced to a box of side $L$ scales like $(\log L)^{Δ+o(1)}$ where $Δ^{-1}:=\log_2(2d/s)$. In particular, the diameter grows about as fast as the typical graph distance between two vertices at distance $L$. We also show that a ball of radius $r$ in th…
This paper is devoted to the study of directed graphs with extremal properties relative to certain metric functionals. We characterize up to isomorphism critical digraphs with infinite values of diameter, quasi-diameter, radius and quasi-radius. Moreover, maximal digraphs with finite values of radius and quasi-diameter are studied.
In this paper, we prove a number of results about pattern avoidance in graphs with bounded metric dimension or edge metric dimension. We show that the maximum possible number of edges in a graph of diameter $D$ and edge metric dimension $k$ is at most $(\lfloor \frac{2D}{3}\rfloor +1)^{k}+k \sum_{i = 1}^{\lceil \frac{D}{3}\rceil } (2i)^{k-1}$, sharpening the bound of $\binom{k}{2}+k D^{k-1}+D^{k}$ from Zubrilina (2018). We also show that the maximum value of $n$ for which some graph of metric dimension $\leq k$ contains the complete graph $K_{n}$ as a subgraph is $n = 2^{k}$. We prove that the…
In an effort to find more examples of amalgamation classes whose almost sure theories are the same as their generic theories as well as amalgamation classes whose almost sure theories are different from their generic theories, we address our attention to two new cases: the bipartite diameter 3 metrically homogeneous graphs of generic type. These graphs were identified by Cherlin, and are determined by certain forbidden configurations. In this paper, we explicitly identify and enumerate their ages, for which we then establish both unlabeled and labeled 0-1 laws. Finally, we show that for one of…
The aim of this paper is to demonstrate relations between Gromov-Hausdorff distance properties and the Borsuk Conjecture. The Borsuk number of a given bounded metric space $X$ is the infimum of cardinal numbers $n$ such that $X$ can be partitioned into $n$ smaller parts (in the sense of diameter). An exact formula for the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between bounded metric spaces is obtained under the assumptions that the diameter and the cardinality of one space is less than the diameter and the Borsuk number of the other one, respectively. Using Bacon equivalence results between Lusternik-Schni…
