We introduce a two time-scale scheme which allows to extend the method of minimizing movements to hyperbolic problems. This method is used to show the existence of weak solutions to a fluid-structure interaction problem between a nonlinear, visco-elastic, $n$-dimensional bulk solid governed by a hyperbolic evolution and an incompressible fluid governed by the ($n$-dimensional) Navier-Stokes equations for $n\geq 2$.
Motivated by NLS, We study a variational problem on hyperbolic space. In particular, we compute its minimum value and we show the minimizer does not exist
We prove a Caffarelli--Kohn--Nirenberg inequality in the hyperbolic space. For a semilinear elliptic equation involving the associated weighted Laplace--Beltrami operator, we establish variationally the existence of positive radial solutions in the subcritical regime. We also show a non-existence result in star-shaped domains when the exponent is supercritical.
We introduce the concept of energy-variational solutions for hyperbolic conservation laws. Intrinsically, these energy-variational solutions fulfill the weak-strong uniqueness principle and the semi-flow property, and the set of solutions is convex and weakly-star closed. The existence of energy-variational solutions is proven via a suitable time-discretization scheme under certain assumptions. This general result yields existence of energy-variational solutions to the magnetohydrodynamical equations for ideal incompressible fluids and to the Euler equations in both the incompressible and the …
We consider an obstacle problem for (possibly non-local) wave equations, and we prove existence of weak solutions through a convex minimization approach based on a time discrete approximation scheme. We provide the corresponding numerical implementation and raise some open questions.
In this article a theoretical framework for problems involving fractional equations of hyperbolic type arising in the theory of viscoelasticity is presented. Based on the Galerkin method, a variational problem of the fractionary viscoelasticity is studied. An appropriate functional setting is introduced in order to establish the existence, uniqueness and a priori estimates for weak solutions. This framework is developed in close concordance with important physical quantities of the theory of viscoelasticity
In this paper we study the singularity formation for two nonlocal 1D active scalar equations, focusing on the hyperbolic flow scenario. Those 1D equations can be regarded as simplified models of some 2D fluid equations.
We consider a Navier-Stokes-Fick-Onsager-Fourier system of PDEs describing mass, energy and momentum balance in a Newtonian fluid with composite molecular structure. For the resulting parabolic-hyperbolic system, we introduce the notion of optimal regularity of mixed type, and we prove the short-time existence of strong solutions for a typical initial boundary-value-problem. By means of a partial maximum principle, we moreover show that such a solution cannot degenerate in finite time due to blow-up or vanishing of the temperature or the partial mass densities. This second result is however on…

In this work we consider a poroelastic flexible material that may deform largely which is situated in an incompressible fluid driven by the Navier-Stokes equations in two or three space dimensions. By a variational approach we show existence of weak solutions for a class of such coupled systems. We consider the unsteady case, this means that the PDE for the poroelastic solid involves the Frechet derivative of a non-convex functional as well as (second order in time) inertia terms.
This paper is devoted to confront two different approaches to the problem of dynam-ical perfect plasticity. Interpreting this model as a constrained boundary value Friedrichs' system enables one to derive admissible hyperbolic boundary conditions. Using variational methods, we show the well-posedness of this problem in a suitable weak measure theoretic setting. Thanks to the property of finite speed propagation, we establish a new regularity result for the solution in short time. Finally, we prove that this variational solution is actually a solution of the hyperbolic formulation in a suitable…

We consider the coupling between the equations of motion of an inviscid compressible fluid in space with an objective Cattaneo-type extension for the heat flux. These equations are written in quasilinear form and we determine which of the given formulations for the heat flux allows for the hyperbolicity of the system. This feature is necessary for a physically acceptable sense of well-posedness for the Cauchy problem of such system of equations.
This note establishes properties of a model of dissipative fluid dynamics as a symmetric hyperbolic system by which Ruggeri once triggered the development of Rational Extended Thermodynamics. These properties, i.e., (1) convergence of solutions to those of the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations and (2) nonlinear asymptotic stability of homogeneous reference solutions, also hold in the analogous situation for barotropic fluids.
In this paper we deal with parabolic variational inequalities of Navier-Stokes type with time-dependent constraints on velocity fields, including gradient constraint case. One of the objectives of this paper is to propose a weak variational formulation for variational inequalities of Navier-Stokes type and to solve them by applying the compactness theorem, which was recently developed by the authors (cf. [22]). Another objective is to approach to a class of quasi-variational inequalities associated with Stefan/Navier-Stokes problems in which we are taking into account the freezing effect of ma…
We study a time-reversed hyperbolic heat conduction problem based upon the Maxwell--Cattaneo model of non-Fourier heat law. This heat and mass diffusion problem is a hyperbolic type equation for thermodynamics systems with thermal memory or with finite time-delayed heat flux, where the Fourier or Fick law is proven to be unsuccessful with experimental data. In this work, we show that our recent variational quasi-reversibility method for the classical time-reversed heat conduction problem, which obeys the Fourier or Fick law, can be adapted to cope with this hyperbolic scenario. We establish a …
We prove the well--posedness of a dynamical perfect plasticity model under general assumptions on the stress constraint set and on the reference configuration. The problem is studied by combining both calculus of variations and hyperbolic methods. The hyperbolic point of view enables one to derive a class of dissipative boundary conditions, somehow intermediate between homogeneous Dirichlet and Neumann ones. By using variational methods, we show the existence and uniqueness of solutions. Then we establish the equivalence between the original variational solutions and generalized entropic--diss…
We define the concept of energy-variational solutions for the Navier--Stokes and Euler equations. The underlying relative energy inequality holds as an equality for classical solutions and if the additional variable vanishes, these solutions are equivalent to the weak formulation with the strong energy inequality. By introducing an additional defect variable in time, all restrictions and all concatenations of energy-variational solutions are again energy-variational solutions. Via the criterion of maximal dissipation, a unique solution is selected that is not only continuously depending on the…
Starting from the classic contraction mapping principle, we establish a general, flexible, variational setting that turns out to be applicable to many situations of existence in Differential Equations. We show its potentiality with some selected examples including initial-value, Cauchy problems for ODEs; non-linear, monotone PDEs; linear and non-linear hyperbolic problems; and steady Navier-Stokes systems.
We introduce a variational structure for the Fourier-Cattaneo (FC) system which is a second-order hyperbolic system. This variational structure is inspired by the large-deviation rate functional for the Kac process which is closely linked to the FC system. Using this variational formulation we introduce appropriate solution concepts for the FC equation and prove an a priori estimate which connects this variational structure to an appropriate Lyapunov function and Fisher information, the so-called FIR inequality. Finally, we use this formulation and estimate to study the diffusive and hyperboli…
Inspired by applications, we study the effect of interface slip on the effective wave propagation in poroelastic composites. The current literature on the homogenization for the poroelastic wave equations are all based on the no-slip interface condition posed on the micro-scale. However, for certain pore fluids, the no-slip conditions are known to be physically invalid. Even though there are results in a few papers regarding porous media with slip condition on the interface, they are for porous media with rigid solid matrix rather than an elastic one. For the former case, the equations for the…
We consider the coupling between the equations of motion of a compressible fluid in two and three space dimensions with Christov's equation for the heat flux. Christov's equation is a frame indifferent formulation of the classical model of Cattaneo that allows for the heat flux to be eliminated to obtain a single hyperbolic equation for the temperature. The obtained system is written in quasilinear form for the state variables density, velocity, temperature and heat flux. It is then shown that this system is not of hyperbolic type as consequence of the presence of the Lie-Oldroyd upper convect…
We consider the sloshing problem for an incompressible, inviscid, irrotational fluid in an open container, including effects due to surface tension on the free surface. We restrict ourselves to a constant contact angle and seek time-harmonic solutions of the linearized problem, which describes the time-evolution of the fluid due to a small initial disturbance of the surface at rest. As opposed to the zero surface tension case, where the problem reduces to a partial differential equation for the velocity potential, we obtain a coupled system for the velocity potential and the free surface displ…
In this paper, we introduce a new framework for parametrization schemes (PS) in GFD. Using the theory of controlled rough paths, we derive a class of rough geophysical fluid dynamics (RGFD) models as critical points of rough action functionals. These RGFD models characterize Lagrangian trajectories in fluid dynamics as geometric rough paths (GRP) on the manifold of diffeomorphic maps. Three constrained variational approaches are formulated for the derivation of these models. The first is the Clebsch formulation, in which the constraints are imposed as rough advection laws. The second is the Ha…
