We present an analysis of the 4-2600 $μ$m spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the west and east nuclei and the diffuse infrared (IR) region of the merger-driven starburst Arp 220. We examine several possible source morphologies and dust temperature distributions using a mixture of silicate and carbonaceous grains. From fits to the SEDs we derive dust masses, temperatures, luminosities, and dust inferred gas masses. We show that the west and east nuclei are powered by central sources deeply enshrouded behind $\sim 10^{26}$ cm$^{-2}$ column densities of hydrogen with an exponential density distribution, and that the west and east nuclei are optically thick out to wavelengths of $\sim 1900$ and $\sim 770$ $μ$m, respectively. The nature of the central sources cannot be determined from our analysis. We derive star formation rates or black hole masses needed to power the IR emission, and show that the [C II] 158$μ$m line cannot be used as a tracer of the star formation rate in heavily obscured systems. Dust inferred gas masses are larger than those inferred from CO observations, suggesting either larger dust-to-H mass ratios, or the presence of hidden atomic H that cannot be inferred from CO observations. The luminosities per unit mass in the nuclei are $\sim 450$, in solar units, smaller that the Eddington limit of $\sim 1000 - 3000$ for an optically thick star forming region, suggesting that the observed gas outflows are primarily driven by stellar winds and supernova shock waves instead of radiation pressure on the dust.
Recent Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations found a positive correlation between the mass of dense molecular gas in the circumnuclear disks (CNDs) and accretion rate to the active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This indicates that star formation activity in the CNDs is essential for triggering the accretion of mass to AGNs. Although the starburst-driven turbulence is a key mechanism for the transfer of angular momentum and the resultant mass accretion from the CND scale to the inner radius, the observational evidence is lacking. We report the very-long-baseline-interferome…
It has been well established in the past decades that the central black hole masses of galaxies correlate with dynamical properties of their harbouring bulges. This notion begs the question of whether there are causal connections between the AGN and its immediate vicinity in the host galaxy. In this paper we analyse the presence of circumnuclear star formation in a sample of 15 AGN using mid-infrared observations. The data consist of a set of 11.3{\mm} PAH emission and reference continuum images, taken with ground based telescopes, with sub-arcsecond resolution. By comparing our star formation…
We use Herschel data to analyze the size of the far-infrared 70micron emission for z<0.06 local samples of 277 hosts of Swift-BAT selected active galactic nuclei (AGN), and 515 comparison galaxies that are not detected by BAT. For modest far-infrared luminosities 8.5<log(LFIR)<10.5, we find large scatter of half light radii Re70 for both populations, but a typical Re70 <~ 1 kpc for the BAT hosts that is only half that of comparison galaxies of same far-infrared luminosity. The result mostly reflects a more compact distribution of star formation (and hence gas) in the AGN hosts, but compact AGN…
We present statistical properties of diffuse Lyman-alpha halos (LAHs) around high-$z$ star-forming galaxies with large Subaru samples of Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) at $z=2.2$. We make subsamples defined by the physical quantities of LAEs' central Lyman-alpha luminosities, UV magnitudes, Lyman-alpha equivalent widths, and UV slopes, and investigate LAHs' radial surface brightness (SB) profiles and scale lengths $r_n$ as a function of these physical quantities. We find that there exist prominent LAHs around LAEs with faint Lyman-alpha luminosities, bright UV luminosities, and small Lyman-alpha …
We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) to map the CO(3-2) and [CI](1-0) lines, as well as their underlying continuum emission, from the central $\sim 200$ pc region of the Circinus galaxy that hosts the nearest type 2 Seyfert-class active galactic nucleus (AGN), with a spatial resolution of $\sim 6-15$ pc. The lines and continuum-emitting regions consist of a circumnuclear disk (CND; 74 pc $\times$ 34 pc) and spiral arms. The distribution of the continuum emission revealed a temperature-dependent dust geometry and possibly polar dust elongation in the torus region. The…
Disk reverberation mapping of a handful of nearby AGN suggest accretion disk sizes which are a factor few too large for their luminosities, apparently at odds with the standard model. Here, we investigate the likely contribution to the measured delay signature of diffuse continuum emission arising from broad line region gas. We start by constructing spherically symmetric pressure-law BLR models (i.e., $P(r)\propto r^{-s}$) that approximately reproduce the observed emission line fluxes of the strong UV--optical emission-lines in the best-studied source, NGC~5548. We then determine the contribut…
We present a multiwavelength investigation of the circumnuclear environment of M31. Based on Chandra/ACIS data, we tightly constrain the X-ray luminosity of M31*, the central supermassive black hole of the galaxy, to be L (0.3-7 keV)<= 1.2x10^{36}erg/s, approximately 10^{-10} of the Eddington luminosity. From the diffuse X-ray emission, we characterize the circumnuclear hot gas with a temperature of ~0.3 keV and a density of ~0.1 cm^{-3}. In the absence of an active SMBH and recent star formation, the most likely heating source for the hot gas is Type Ia SNe. The presence of cooler, dusty gas …
We present new mid-infrared N-band spectroscopy and Q-band photometry of the local luminous infrared galaxy NGC1614, one of the most extreme nearby starbursts. We analyze the mid-IR properties of the nucleus (central 150 pc) and four regions of the bright circumnuclear (diameter~600 pc) star-forming (SF) ring of this object. The nucleus differs from the circumnuclear SF ring by having a strong 8-12 micron continuum (low 11.3 micron PAH equivalent width). These characteristics, together with the nuclear X-ray and sub-mm properties, can be explained by an X-ray weak active galactic nucleus (AGN)…

Ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have the sizes of giant galaxies but the luminosities of dwarfs. A key to understanding their origins comes from their total masses, but their low surface brightnesses ($μ(V) \geq$ 25.0) generally prohibit dynamical studies. Here we report the first such measurements for a UDG (VCC~1287 in the Virgo cluster), based on its globular cluster system dynamics and size. From 7 GCs we measure a mean systemic velocity $v_{\rm sys}$ = 1071$^{+14}_{-15}$ km/s, thereby confirming a Virgo-cluster association. We measure a velocity dispersion of 33$^{+16}_{-10}$ km/s within 8.…
We present a multi-wavelength study of seven AGN at spectroscopic redshift >2.5 in the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field South, selected to have good FIR/sub-mm detections. Our aim is to investigate the possibility that the obscuration observed in the X-rays can be produced by the interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy. Based on the 7 Ms Chandra spectra, we measured obscuring column densities N$_{H, X}$ in excess of 7x10$^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and intrinsic X-ray luminosities L$_{X}$>10$^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ for our targets, as well as equivalent widths for the Fe K$α$ emission line EW>0.5-1 keV. We built…
In the cold neutral medium, high out-of-equilibrium temperatures are created by intermittent dissipation processes, including shocks, viscous heating, and ambipolar diffusion. The high-temperature excursions are thought to explain the enhanced abundance of CH$^{+}$ observed along diffuse molecular sight-lines. Intermittent high temperatures should also have an impact on H$_2$ line luminosities. We carry out simulations of MHD turbulence in molecular clouds including heating and cooling, and post-process them to study H$_2$ line emission and hot-gas chemistry, particularly the formation of CH$^…
Extended narrow-line regions (NLRs) around active galactic nuclei (AGN) are shaped by the distribution of gas in the host galaxy and by the geometry of the circumnuclear obscuration, and thus they can be used to test the AGN unification model. In this work, we quantify the morphologies of the narrow-line regions in 308 nearby AGNs ($z=0-0.14$, \lbol $\sim 10^{42.4-44.1}$ \erg{}) from the MaNGA survey. Based on the narrow-line region maps, we find that a large fraction (81\%) of these AGN have bi-conical NLR morphology. The distribution of their measured opening angles suggests that the intrins…

We use the \textsc{Romulus25} cosmological simulation volume to identify the largest-ever simulated sample of {\it field} ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). At $z=0$, we find that isolated UDGs have average star formation rates, colors, and virial masses for their stellar masses and environment. UDGs have moderately elevated HI masses, being 70\% (300\%) more HI-rich than typical isolated dwarf galaxies at luminosities brighter (fainter) than M$_\mathrm{B}$=-14. However, UDGs are consistent with the general isolated dwarf galaxy population and make up $\sim$20\% of all field galaxies with 10$^7$<M…
Recent observations have highlighted a significant population of faint but large (r_eff>1.5 kpc) galaxies in the Coma cluster. The origin of these Ultra Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs) remains puzzling, as the interpretation of the observational results has been hindered by the subjective selection of UDGs, and the limited study of only the Coma (and some examples in the Virgo-) cluster. We extend the study of UDGs using 8 clusters in the redshift range 0.044<z<0.063 with deep g- and r-band imaging data taken with MegaCam at the CFHT. We describe an automatic selection pipeline for quantitative identi…
X-ray-emitting coronae of nearby galaxies are expected to be produced either by accretion from the intergalactic medium and/or by various galactic feedback. We herein present a systematical analysis of the Chandra observations of 53 nearby edge-on disk galaxies over a range of 3 orders of magnitude in SFR. Various coronal properties, such as the luminosity, vertical/horizontal extent, and other inferred parameters, are characterized for all the sample galaxies. For galaxies with high enough counting statistics, we also examine the thermal and chemical states of the coronal gas. Here we concent…
