We present a multiwavelength investigation of the circumnuclear environment of M31. Based on Chandra/ACIS data, we tightly constrain the X-ray luminosity of M31*, the central supermassive black hole of the galaxy, to be L (0.3-7 keV)<= 1.2x10^{36}erg/s, approximately 10^{-10} of the Eddington luminosity.
From the diffuse X-ray emission, we characterize the circumnuclear hot gas with a temperature of ~0.3 keV and a density of ~0.1 cm^{-3}. In the absence of an active SMBH and recent star formation, the most likely heating source for the hot gas is Type Ia SNe. The presence of cooler, dusty gas residing in a nuclear spiral has long been known in terms of optical line emission and extinction. We further reveal the infrared emission of the nuclear spiral and evaluate the relative importance of various possible ionizing sources. We show evidence for interaction between the nuclear spiral and the hot gas, probably via thermal evaporation. This mechanism lends natural understandings to 1) the inactivity of M31*, in spite of a probably continuous supply of gas from outer disk regions, and 2) the launch of a bulge outflow of hot gas, primarily mass-loaded from the circumnuclear regions. One particular prediction of such a scenario is the presence of gas with intermediate temperatures arising from the conductive interfaces. The FUSE observations do show strong OVI$λ$1032 and 1038 absorption lines against the bulge starlight, but the effective OVI column density (~4x10^{14} cm^{-2}), may be attributed to foreground gas located in the bulge and/or the highly inclined disk of M31. Our study strongly argues that stellar feedback, particularly in the form of energy release from SNe Ia, may play an important role in regulating the evolution of SMBHs and the interstellar medium in galactic bulges.
Circumnuclear star formation and AGN feedback is believed to play a critical role in the context of galaxy evolution. The low-luminosity QSO (LLQSO) sample that contains 99 of the closest AGN with redshift z<=0.06 fills the gap between the local AGN population and high-redshift QSOs that is essential to understand the AGN evolution with redshift. In this paper, we present the results of near-infrared H+K-integral field spectroscopy of the inner kiloparsecs of the LLQSO HE 1029-1831 with SINFONI. Line maps show that ionized hydrogen gas is located in spiral arms within the stellar bar and in a …
We present a general review of the current knowledge of IRAS 20551-4250 and its circumnuclear environment. This Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxy is one of the most puzzling sources of its class in the nearby Universe: the near-IR spectrum is typical of a galaxy experiencing a very intense starburst, but a highly obscured active nucleus is identified beyond 5 micron and possibly dominates the mid-IR energy output of the system. At longer wavelengths star formation is again the main driver of the global spectral shape and features. We interpret all the available IR diagnostics in the framework of s…
We present a 3-dimensional data cube of the K band continuum and the Br-gamma, H2 S(0) and S(1) lines within the central 18.5" x 13.8" (520 pc x 390 pc) region of NGC 6946. Data were obtained using OSIRIS, a near-infrared Integral Field Unit at Keck Observatory, with Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics. The 0.3" resolution allows us to investigate the stellar bulge and the forming star clusters in the nuclear region on 10 parsec scales. We detect giant HII regions associated with massive young star clusters in the nuclear spiral/ring (R ~ 30pc) and in the principal shocks along the nuclear bar. C…
Planetary nebulae (PNe) are an important tool for studying the dynamics and chemical evolution of galaxies in the Local Universe, given their characteristic, bright emission line spectra. The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) provides a unique laboratory for studying PNe in the circumnuclear region, thanks to its proximity and almost uniformly low line-of-sight extinction that ensures observations with high resolution and sensitivity. Using the WIYN/Hydra multi-fiber spectrograph, we have obtained optical (4119--6882Å) spectra of 77 PN candidates selected from Hubble Space Telescope narrow-band imaging, …
The supermassive black hole (SMBH), Sgr A*, at the Galactic Center is surrounded by a molecular circumnuclear disk (CND) lying between 1.5-4 pc radii. The irregular and clumpy structures of the CND, suggest dynamical evolution and episodic feeding of gas towards the central SMBH. New sensitive data from the SMA and GBT, reveal several >5-10 pc scale molecular arms, which either directly connect to the CND, or may penetrate inside the CND. The CND appears to be the convergence of the innermost parts of largescale gas streamers, which are responding to the central gravitational potential well. R…
We have analyzed the circumnuclear ring of the spiral galaxy NGC7742 in order to understand its formation and evolution. We have obtained gaseous abundances, characterized the interstellar medium of the clusters and studied the properties of the ionizing clusters. We have also implemented a new methodology using the red wavelength range of optical spectra, with the purpose of understanding how star formation evolves in high metallicity environments.
We examine the dependence of the fraction of galaxies containing pseudo bulges on environment for a flux limited sample of $\sim$5000 SDSS galaxies. We have separated bulges into classical and pseudo bulge categories based on their position on the Kormendy diagram. Pseudo bulges are thought to be formed by internal processes and are a result of secular evolution in galaxies. We attempt to understand the dependence of secular evolution on environment and morphology. Dividing our sample of disc+bulge galaxies based on group membership into three categories: central and satellite galaxies in grou…
We investigated the typical environment and physical properties of "red discs" and "blue bulges", comparing those to the "normal" objects in the blue cloud and red sequence. Our sample is composed of cluster members and field galaxies at $z \le 0.1$, so that we can assess the impact of the local and global environment. We find that disc galaxies display a strong dependence on environment, becoming redder for higher densities. This effect is more pronounced for objects within the virial radius, being also strong related to the stellar mass. We find that local and global environment affect galax…
We study the physical properties of giant molecular cloud associations (GMAs) in M100 (NGC 4321) using the ALMA Science Verification feathered (12-m+ACA) data in 12CO (1-0). To examine the environmental dependence of GMA properties, GMAs are classified based on their locations in the various environments as circumnuclear ring (CNR), bar, spiral, and inter-arm GMAs. The CNR GMAs are massive and compact, while the inter-arm GMAs are diffuse with low surface density. GMA mass and size are strongly correlated, as suggested by Larson (1981). However, the diverse power-law index of the relation impl…
We present a spatially resolved stellar population study of the inner $\sim$200\,pc radius of NGC4303 based on near-infrared integral field spectroscopy with SINFONI/VLT at a spatial resolution of 40-80pc and using the STARLIGHT code. We found the distribution of the stellar populations presents a spatial variation, suggesting an age stratification. Three main structures stand out. Two nuclear blobs, one composed by young stars (t $\leq$ 50Myr) and one with intermediate-age stars (50Myr $<$ t $\leq$ 2Gyr) both shifted from the centre. The third one is an internal intermediate-age spiral arm-li…
We measure the extinction curve in the central 200 pc of M31 at mid-ultraviolet to near-infrared wavelengths (from 1928A to 1.5μm), using Swift/UVOT and HST WFC3/ACS observations in thirteen bands. Taking advantage of the high angular resolution of the HST WFC3 and ACS detectors, we develop a method to simultaneously determine the relative extinction and the fraction of obscured starlight for five dusty complexes located in the circumnuclear region. The extinction curves of these clumps (RV =2.4-2.5) are steeper than the average Galactic one (RV =3.1), but are similar to optical and near-infra…
Using a sample of galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) and a catalog of bulge-disk decompositions, we study how the size distribution of galaxies depends on the intrinsic properties of galaxies, such as concentration, morphology, specific star formation rate (sSFR), and bulge fraction, and on the large-scale environments in the context of central/satellite decomposition, halo environment, the cosmic web: \cluster, \filament, \sheet ~and \void, as well as galaxy number density. We find that there is a strong dependence of the luminosity- or mass-size rel…
We present near-infrared ($H$- and $K$-band) integral-field observations of the inner $\sim$700pc of the active spiral galaxy NGC613, obtained with SINFONI on the Very Large Telescope. We use emission-line ratios to determine the dominant excitation mechanisms in different regions within our field-of-view, in particular the active nucleus and the star-forming circum-nuclear ring. Diagnostic diagrams involving [FeII] and H$_2$ fluxes indicate that the gas is not only photoionized by the AGN in the nucleus of NGC613, but also shock-heated. On the other hand, the emission line ratios measured in …
Galactic circumnuclear environments of nearby galaxies provide unique opportunities for our understanding of the co-evolution between super-massive black holes and their host galaxies. Here we present a detailed study of ionized gas in the central kiloparsec region of M81, which hosts the closest prototype low-luminosity active galactic nucleus, based on optical integral-field spectroscopic observations taken with the CAHA 3.5m telescope. It is found that much of the circumnuclear ionized gas is concentraed within a bright core of $\sim$200 pc in extent and a surrounding spiral-like structure …
Keck OSIRIS/LGSAO observations of the ultraluminous galaxy IRAS~23365+3604 resolve a circumnuclear bar (or irregular disk) of semimajor axis 0.42" (520 pc) in Paschen-alpha emission. The line-of-sight velocity of the ionized gas increases from the northeast toward the southwest; this gradient is perpendicular to the photometric major axis of the infrared emission. Two pairs of bends in the zero-velocity line are detected. The inner bend provides evidence for gas inflow onto the circumnuclear disk/bar structure. We interpret the gas kinematics on kiloparsec scales in relation to the molecular g…
Different processes have been proposed to explain the formation of S0s, including mergers, disc instabilities and quenched spirals. These processes are expected to dominate in different environments, and thus leave characteristic footprints in the kinematics and stellar populations of the individual components within the galaxies. New techniques enable us to cleanly disentangle the kinematics and stellar populations of these components in IFU observations. In this paper, we use buddi to spectroscopically extract the light from the bulge, disc and lens components within a sample of 8 S0 galaxie…
In this work, we investigate the reason behind the increased occurrence of S0 galaxies in high density environments. Our sample comprises of $\sim$ 2500 spiral and $\sim$ 2000 S0 galaxies spanning a wide range of environments. Dividing the galaxies into categories of classical and pseudobulge hosting spiral and S0 galaxies, we have studied their properties as a function of the environment. We find that the fraction of pseudobulge hosting disc galaxies decreases with increase in density. The classical bulge hosting spirals and S0 galaxies follow a similar trend in less dense environments but to…
A Circumnuclear Disk (CND) of molecular gas occupies the central few parsecs of the Galactic Center. It is likely subject to turbulent disruptions from violent events in its surrounding environment, but the effect of such perturbations has not yet been investigated in detail. Here we perform 3D, N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations with an adapted general turbulence driving method to investigate the CND's structural evolution, in particular its reaction to varied scales of injected turbulence. We find that, because of shear flow in the disk, transient arcs of gas (streams) n…
We present 0".2-resolution Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations at 870 um for 25 Halpha-seleced star-forming galaxies (SFGs) around the main-sequence at z=2.2-2.5. We detect significant 870 um continuum emission in 16 (64%) of these SFGs. The high-resolution maps reveal that the dust emission is mostly radiated from a single region close to the galaxy center. Exploiting the visibility data taken over a wide $uv$ distance range, we measure the half-light radii of the rest-frame far-infrared emission for the best sample of 12 massive galaxies with logM*>11. We find nine gala…
We study bulge formation in MW/M31-like galaxies in a $Λ$-cold dark matter scenario, focusing on the origin of high- and low-Sersic index bulges. For this purpose we use TNG50, a simulation of the IllustrisTNG project that combines a resolution of $\sim 8 \times 10^4 M_{\odot}$ in stellar particles with a cosmological volume 52 cMpc in extent. We parametrize bulge surface brightness profiles by the Sérsic index and the bulge-to-total (B/T) ratio obtained from two-component photometric decompositions. In our sample of 287 MW/M31-like simulated galaxies, $17.1\%$ of photometric bulges exhibit hi…
We present a systematic analysis of the mid-infrared (MIR) properties of the youngest radio galaxies, based on low-resolution data provided by the {\it WISE} and {\it IRAS} satellites. We restrict our analysis to sources with available X-ray data that constitute the earliest phase of radio galaxy evolution, i.e. those classified as Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and/or Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs). In our sample of 29 objects, we find that the host galaxies are predominantly red/yellow ellipticals, with some of them displaying distorted morphology. We find a variety of MIR colors, and obs…
We analyze a suite of 33 cosmological simulations of the evolution of Milky Way-mass galaxies in low-density environments. Our sample spans a broad range of Hubble types at z=0, from nearly bulgeless disks to bulge-dominated galaxies. Despite the fact that a large fraction of the bulge is typically in place by z=1, we find no significant correlation between the morphology at z=1 and at z=0. The z=1 progenitors of disk galaxies span a range of morphologies, including smooth disks, unstable disks, interacting galaxies and bulge-dominated systems. By z=0.5, spiral arms and bars are largely in pla…
Using high-quality optical images from the Carnegie-Irvine Galaxy Survey, we perform multi-component decompositions of S0 galaxies to derive accurate structural parameters to constrain their physical origin. Many S0s do not host prominent bulges. S0 galaxies have a broad distribution of bulge-to-total ratios ($B/T$) and Sérsic indices ($n$), with average values of $B/T=0.34\pm0.15$ and $n=2.62\pm1.02$, qualitatively consistent with the notion that S0s define a parallel sequence with and may have evolved from spiral galaxies. This is further reinforced by the incidence of bars and lenses in S0s…
We present a new investigation of the habitability of the Milky Way bulge, that expands previous studies on the Galactic Habitable Zone. We discuss existing knowledge on the abundance of planets in the bulge, metallicity and the possible frequency of rocky planets, orbital stability and encounters, and the possibility of planets around the central supermassive black hole. We focus on two aspects that can present substantial differences with respect to the environment in the disk: (i) the ionizing radiation environment, due to the presence of the central black hole and to the highest rate of su…
NGC 4945 harbors one of the nearest active galactic nuclei (AGN), which allows reaching high spatial resolution with the current observational facilities. The Seyfert 2 nucleus is deeply obscured by an edge-on disk with $A_V\sim14$, requiring infrared observations to study circumnuclear structures and the interstellar medium. In this work, we present an imaging and longslit spectroscopic study of the nuclear region with a spatial resolution of 6.5 pc, based on Flamingos-2 (F2) and T-ReCS data taken at the Gemini South observatory. We report sub-arcsecond photometric measurements of the nucleus…
We use a sample of 220 face-on bulge-less galaxies situated in the low density environment to estimate their total mass via orbital motions of supposed rare satellites. Our inspection reveals 43 dwarf companions having the mean projected separation of 130 kpc and the mean-square velocity difference of 96 km/s. For them, we obtain the mean orbital-mass-to-K-band luminosity ratio of $20\pm3$. Seven bulge-less spirals in the Local Volume are also characterized by the low mean ratio, $M_{orb}/L_K = 22\pm5$. We conclude that bulge-less Sc-Scd-Sd galaxies have poor dark halos, about two times lower …

We study the effects of bulge elongation on the star formation activity in the centers of spiral galaxies using the data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. We construct a volume-limited sample of face-on spiral galaxies with $M_r < -$19.5 mag at 0.02 $\leq z <$ 0.055 by excluding barred galaxies, where the aperture of the SDSS spectroscopic fibre covers the bulges of the galaxies. We adopt the ellipticity of bulges measured by Simard et al. (2011) who performed two-dimensional bulge+disc decompositions using the SDSS images of galaxies, and identify nuclear starbursts using the …
In this paper, we try to understand why the classical bulge fraction observed in S0 galaxies is significantly higher than that in spiral galaxies. We carry out a comparative study of the bulge and global properties of a sample of spiral and S0 galaxies in a fixed environment. Our sample is flux limited and contains 262 spiral and 155 S0 galaxies drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have classified bulges into classical and pseudobulge categories based on their position on the Kormendy diagram. Dividing our sample into bins of galaxy stellar mass, we find that the fraction of S0 galaxies…
We study the environment in which a galaxy lies (i.e. field or group) and its connection with the morphology of the galaxy. This is done by examining the distribution of parametric and non-parametric statistics across the star-formation rate (SFR) - stellar mass (M$_{\star}$) plane and studying how these distributions change with the environment in the local universe ($z<0.15$). We determine the concentration (C), Gini, M$_{20}$, asymmetry, Gini-M$_{20}$ bulge statistic (GMB), 50\% light radius ($r_{50}$), total Sérsic index, and bulge Sérsic index ($n_{Bulge}$) for galaxies from the Galaxy an…
We study the mass assembly and spin evolution of supermassive black holes (BHs) across cosmic time as well as the impact of gravitational recoil on the population of nuclear and wandering black holes (wBHs) by using the semi-analytical model LGalaxies run on top of Millennium merger trees. We track spin changes that BHs experience during both coalescence events and gas accretion phases. For the latter, we assume that spin changes are coupled with the bulge assembly. This assumption leads to predictions for the median spin values of z=0 BHs that depend on whether they are hosted by pseudobulges…
We present the discovery of rare active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in nearby (z < 0.05) compact elliptical galaxies (cEs) located in isolated environments. Using spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 12, four AGNs were identified based on the optical emission-line diagnostic diagram. SDSS optical spectra of AGNs show the presence of distinct narrow-line emissions. Utilizing the black hole (BH) mass-stellar velocity dispersion scaling relation and the correlation between the narrow L([OIII])/L(H\b{eta}) line ratio and the width of the broad Hα emission line, we es…
We present a study of nuclear activities in nearby S0 galaxies. After cross-matching the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) with the Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies (RC3) and visually checking the SDSS images, we derive a sample of 583 S0 galaxies with the central spectrophotometric information. In order to separate nebular emission lines from the underlying stellar contribution, we fit the stellar population model to the SDSS spectra of these S0 galaxies. According to the BPT diagram, we find that $8\%$ of S0 galaxies show central star-forming activity, while the fr…
We have used dedicated 0.7m telescopes in California and Israel to image the halos of ~200 galaxies in the Local Volume to 29 mag/sq arcsec, the sample mainly drawn from the 2MASS Large Galaxy Atlas (LGA). We supplement the LGA sample with dwarf galaxies and more distant giant ellipticals. Low surface brightness halos exceeding 50 kpc in diameter are found only in galaxies more luminous than L* and classic interaction signatures are relatively infrequent. Halo diameter is correlated with total galaxy luminosity. Extended low surface brightness halos are present even in galaxies as faint as M_V…
We examine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), dust and atomic/molecular emission toward the Galactic bulge using Spitzer Space Telescope observations of four fields: C32, C35, OGLE and NGC 6522. These fields are approximately centered on (l, b) = (0.0°, 1.0°), (0.0°, -1.0°), (0.4°, -2.1°) and (1.0°, -3.8°), respectively. Far-infrared photometric observations complement the Spitzer/IRS spectroscopic data and are used to construct spectral energy distributions. We find that the dust and PAH emission are exceptionally similar between C32 and C35 overall, in part explained due to their locatio…
