Transport and Langevin equations are employed to study hadronic medium effects on charmonium elliptic flows in heavy-ion collisions. In Pb-Pb collisions, the anisotropic energy density of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) in the transverse plane is transformed into hadron momentum anisotropy after the phase transition. Charmonia with high transverse momentum $p_T$ are produced via the primordial hard process and undergo different degrees of dissociation along different paths in the QGP. They then scatter with light hadrons in the hadron phase. Both contributions to the charmonium elliptic flows are studied at moderate and high transverse momenta. The elliptic flows of the prompt $J/ψ$ are found to be considerably enhanced at high transverse momentum when the charmonium diffusion coefficients in the hadronic medium are parametrized through the geometry scale approximation. This hadronic medium effect is negligible for quarkonia with larger mass such as bottomonia.
We study kaon-charmonium and eta-charmonium dissociation reactions. The K-charmonium dissociation and the eta-charmonium dissociation include 27 reactions. Cross sections for the reactions are calculated in the Born approximation, in the quark-interchange mechanism and with a temperature-dependent quark potential. The temperature dependence of peak cross sections of endothermic reactions is linked to the temperature dependence of quark-antiquark relative-motion wave functions, meson masses and the quark potential. Although the eta meson and kaon have similar masses, the energy and temperature …
K*-charmonium dissociation reactions in hadronic matter are studied in the Born approximation, in the quark-interchange mechanism, and with a temperature-dependent quark potential. We obtain the temperature dependence of unpolarized cross sections for K*-charmonium dissociation reactions which produce charmed mesons and charmed strange mesons. We use the cross sections for charmonium dissociation in collisions with pion, rho meson, kaon, vector kaon, and eta meson to calculate dissociation rates of charmonium with the five types of mesons. Because of the temperature dependence of the meson mas…
A kinetic equation approach is applied to model anomalous J/psi suppression at RHIC and SPS by absorption in a hadron resonance gas which successfully describes statistical hadron production in both experiments. The puzzling rapidity dependence of the PHENIX data is reproduced as a geometric effect due to a longer absorption path for J/psi production at forward rapidity.
We study the properties of $D$ and $\bar{D}$ mesons in hot isospin asymmetric strange hadronic matter, arising due to their interactions with the hadrons in the hyperonic medium. The interactions of $D$ and $\bar{D}$ mesons with these light hadrons are derived by generalizing the chiral SU(3) model used for the study of hyperonic matter to SU(4). We also study the mass modifications of the charmonium states $J/ψ$, $ψ(3686)$ and $ψ(3770)$ in the isospin asymmetric strange hadronic matter at finite temperatures and investigate the possibility of the decay of the charmonium states into $D\bar D$ …
Meson-charmonium dissociation reactions governed by the quark interchange are studied with temperature-dependent quark potentials. Quark-antiquark relative-motion wave functions and masses of charmonia and charmed mesons are determined by the central spin-independent part of the potentials or by the central spin-independent part and a smeared spin-spin interaction. The prominent temperature dependence of the masses is found. Based on the potentials, the wave functions, and the meson masses, we obtain temperature-dependent cross sections for fifteen pion-charmonium and rho-charmonium dissociati…
Production of J/$ψ$ from nucleus-nucleus reactions depends sensitively on the dissociation cross section with light hadrons. Effective lagrangian methods are used to describe the hadronic degrees of freedom, including strangeness and charm. Cross sections with pions, rho mesons, kaons and nucleons having magnitudes 4--8 mb are found, and with steep thresholds. This, folded with thermal momentum distributions for the scattering partners, suggests a mean dissociation lifetime $\simeq$ 20 fm/c. Therefore, the ``abnormal'' J/$ψ$ suppression seen in recent Pb+Pb experiments seems to owe to expected…
We investigate mass shifts of charmonia driven by change of the gluon condensate below but near transition temperatures at finite baryonic chemical potential. Extending previous prescription on the relation between gluon condensates and thermodynamic quantities, we model the gluon condensates of hadronic matter at finite temperature and baryonic chemical potential such that the scalar gluon condensate fits with the latest lattice QCD data. By making use of the QCD sum rule and the second order Stark effect, we find that the smoother transition in the full QCD can lead to moderate mass shifts o…
The phi-charmonium dissociation reactions in hadronic matter are studied. Unpolarised cross sections for 12 reactions are calculated in the Born approximation, in the quark-interchange mechanism and with a temperature-dependent quark potential. The potential leads to remarkable temperature dependence of the cross sections. With the cross sections and the phi distribution function we calculate the dissociation rates of the charmonia in the interactions with the phi meson in hadronic matter. The dependence of the rates on temperature and charmonium momentum is meaningful to the influence of phi …
The masses and decay widths of charmonium states are studied in the presence of strong magnetic fields. The mixing between the pseudoscalar and vector charmonium states at rest is observed to lead to appreciable negative (positive) shifts in the masses of the pseudoscalar (longitudinal component of the vector) charmonium states in vacuum/hadronic medium in the presence of high magnetic fields. The pseudoscalar and vector charmonium masses in the hadronic medium, calculated in an effective chiral model from the medium changes of a scalar dilaton field, have additional significant modifications …
Last year the E866-group of the Fermilab measured the $x_F$ dependence of $J/Ψ$ and $Ψ'$ suppression in $pA$ collisions. We discuss two of the effects found in that experiment with regard to color coherence effects: the different suppression of the $J/Ψ$ and the $Ψ'$ at $x_F<0$ and the significant suppression of both at large $x_F$. The small $x_F$ regions is dominated by fully formed charmonium states and thus enables us to discuss the formation time and the cross section of the different charmonium states. In the large $x_F$ region the interaction of the charmonium states with nuclear matter…
In this paper we investigate the Exotic Charmonium (EC) production in $γγ$ interactions present in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) energies as well as for the proposed energies of the Future Circular Collider (FCC). Our results demonstrate that the experimental study of these processes is feasible and can be used to constrain the theoretical decay widths and shed some light on the configuration of the considered multiquark states.
We study the evolution of charmonia as they collide with the constituents of the fireball produced in high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The latter evolves in a manner controlled by the equation of state as given by lattice QCD, and is constructed in such a way that the observed hadronic spectra are correctly reproduced. A kinetic description of charmonium interactions with both quark-gluon and hadronic degrees of freedom allows to study in detail the evolution in different regimes, controlled by collision energy, kinematics and geometry. The data collected at the CERN-SPS accelerator are…
Data from J/psi and psi' production in p-A collisions are used to determine the cross section for absorption of pre-resonance charmonium in nuclear matter. The J/psi suppression in O-Cu, O-U and S-U collisions is fully reproduced by the corresponding nuclear absorption, while Pb-Pb collisions show an additional suppression increasing with centrality. We study the onset of this change in terms of hadronic comover interactions and conclude that so far no conventional hadronic description can consistently account for all data. Deconfinement, starting at a critical point determined by central S-U …
Applying the HSD transport approach to charmonium dynamics within the 'hadronic comover model' and the 'QGP melting scenario', we show that the suppression pattern seen at RHIC cannot be explained by the interaction with baryons, comoving mesons and/or by color screening mechanism. The interaction with hadrons in the late stages of the collision (when the energy density falls below the critical) gives a sizable contribution to the suppression. On the other hand, it does not account for the observed additional charmonium dissociation and its dependence on rapidity. Together with the failure of …
The first reports of $ψ$ and $ψ'$ production from experiment NA50 at the CERN SPS are compared to predictions based on a hadronic model of charmonium suppression. Data on centrality dependence and total cross sections are in good accord with these predictions.
We provide predictions for charmonium and open charm production in nuclear collisions at SPS/FAIR energies within the framework of the statistical hadronization model. The increasing importance at lower energies of Lambda_c production is demonstrated and provides a challenge for future experiments. We also demonstrate that, because of the large charm quark mass and the different timescales for charm quark and charmed hadron production, possible modifications of charmed hadrons in the hot hadronic medium do not lead to measurable changes in cross sections for D-meson production. A possible infl…
Measurements of $ψ$ and $ψ'$ production from experiment NA50 at the CERN SPS are compared to predictions based on a hadronic model of charmonium suppression by Vogt and myself. Data on centrality dependence and total cross sections are in good accord with our predictions. Uncertainties in theoretical quanities such as NA50's $L$ parameter are discussed.
In this work, we extended our statistical model with charmed and bottomed hadrons, and fit the quark creational probabilities for the heavy quarks, using low energy inclusive charmonium and bottomonium data. With the finalized fit for all the relevant types of quarks (up, down, strange, charm, bottom) at the energy range from a few GeV up to a few tens of GeV's, the model is now considered complete. Some examples are also given for proton-proton, pion-proton, and proton-antiproton collisions with charmonium, bottomonium, and open charm hadrons in the final state.
The QCD mechanisms underlying the exclusive strong decays and hadronic production amplitudes of charmonium remain poorly understood, despite decades of study and an increasingly detaled body of experimental information. One set of hadronic channels of special interest are those that include baryon-antibaryon states. These are being investigated experimentally at BES and CLEO-c in terms of their baryon resonance content, and are also of interest for the future PANDA experiment, in which charmonium and charmonium hybrids will be produced in p-pbar annihilation in association with light mesons. I…
We study $J/ψ$ suppression in Pb+Pb collisions at CERN-SPS energies in hadronic matter with energy- and temperature-dependent charmonium dissociation cross sections calculated in the quark-interchange model of Barnes and Swanson. We find that the variation of J/$ψ$ survival probability from peripheral to central collisions can be explained as induced by hadronic matter absorption in central collisions.
We calculate the decay widths of the charmonium states, $J/ψ$, $ψ(3686)$ and $ψ(3770)$, to $D\bar D$ pairs, as well as the decay width of $D^* \rightarrow Dπ$, in isospin asymmetric strange hadronic matter, using a field theoretical model for composite hadrons with quark constituents. For this purpose we use the quark antiquark pair creation term of the free Dirac Hamiltonian written in terms of the constituent quark field operators, and use explicit charmonium, $D$, $\bar {D}$, $D^*$ and $π$ states to evaluate the matrix elements for the charmonium as well as $D^*$ decay amplitudes. The mediu…
The formation and suppression dynamics of J/Psi, Chi_c and Psi-Prime mesons is studied within the HSD transport approach for Au+Au reactions at the top RHIC energy of sqrt(S)=200 GeV. Two prominent models, which have been discussed for more than a decade, are incorporated, i.e. the 'hadronic comover absorption and reformation' model as well as the 'QGP threshold' scenario, and compared to available experimental data. Our studies demonstrate that both scenarios - compatible with experimental observation at SPS energies - fail severely at RHIC energies. This combined analysis - together with the…
This paper summarizes what we have done so far to explain charged charmonium/bottomonium-like structures using a hadronic triangle diagram which we call the initial single chiral particle emission mechanism. We discuss processes like $A\to A'+P+P'$ in which two chiral particles $P$ and $P'$ are emitted from $A$. In the intermediate we consider a hadronic one-loop diagram in which $D^{(*)}/D_s^{(*)}/B^{(*)}/B_s^{(*)}$ are included to explain some enhancements experimentally observed. Using this mechanism we explain some of the exotic enhancements and predict a couple of enhancement structures.
Charmonium production from the hadron gas formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions is studied. Using the $J/ψ$-hadron absorption cross section determined from the nonperturbative quark-exchange model, which has a peak value similar to that used in the comover model for $J/ψ$ suppression and a thermally averaged value consistent from that extracted from $J/ψ$ data in heavy-ion collisions, we find that $J/ψ$ production from the hadron gas is negligible in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC energies but is important at LHC energies as a result of the large number of charm mesons produced at hi…
Hadrons produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can suppress the production of J/psi and other charmonium states by charmonium spontaneous dissociation as the hot hadronic environment alters the interaction between the charm quark and charm antiquark. Furthermore, hadrons can thermalize a charmonium to excite it to higher charmonium states which subsequently dissociate spontaneously. They can also collide with a charmonium to lead to its prompt dissociation into an open charm pair.
We calculate, for the first time, $J/ψ$ triangular flow in high energy nuclear collisions. The charmonium motion in medium is controlled by a transport equation with loss and gain terms, and the evolution of the hot medium is governed by a single-shot hydrodynamic equation with a triangularly deformed initial condition. In comparison with the elliptic flow $v_2$, the triangular flow $v_3$ comes almost completely from the charmonium regeneration in the quark gluon plasma and therefore is more sensitive to the medium properties.
The production of charmonia is investigated for heavy-ion collisions from SPS to RHIC energies. Our approach incorporates two sources of $J/Ψ$ yield: (i) a direct contribution arising from early (hard) parton-parton collisions, subject to subsequent nuclear absorption, quark-gluon plasma and hadronic dissociation, and (ii) statistical production at the hadronization transition by coalescence of $c$ and $\bar{c}$ quarks. Within an expanding thermal fireball framework, the model reproduces $J/Ψ$ centrality dependencies observed at the SPS in Pb-Pb and S-U collisions reasonably well. The study of…
Charmonium production in heavy-ion collisions is investigated within a kinetic theory framework incorporating in-medium properties of open- and hidden-charm states in line with recent QCD lattice calculations. A continuously decreasing open-charm threshold across the phase boundary of hadronic and quark-gluon matter is found to have important implications for the equilibrium abundance of charmonium states. The survival of $J/ψ$ resonance states above the transition temperature enables their recreation also in the Quark-Gluon Plasma. Including effects of chemical and thermal off-equilibrium, we…
The heavy quark system is an excellent probe to learn about the QCD dynamics at finite density. First, we discuss the properties of the $J/ψ$ and $D$ meson at finite nucleon density. We discuss why their properties should change at finite density and then introduce an exact QCD relation among these hadron properties and the energy momentum tensor of the medium. Second, we discuss attempts to calculate charmonium-hadron total cross section using effective hadronic models and perturbative QCD. We emphasize a recent calculation, where the cross section is derived using QCD factorization theorem. …
In a hydrodynamic model, we have studied $J/ψ$ suppression and elliptic flow in Au+Au collisions at RHIC energy $\sqrt{s}$=200 GeV. At the initial time, $J/ψ$'s are randomly distributed in the fluid. As the fluid evolve in time, the free streaming $J/ψ$'s are dissolved if the local fluid temperature exceeds a melting temperature $T_{J/ψ}$. Sequential melting of charmonium states ($χ_c$, $ψ\prime$ and $J/ψ$), with melting temperatures $T_{χ_c}=T_{ψ\prime} \approx 1.2T_c$, $T_{J/ψ} \approx2T_c$ and feed-down fraction $F\approx 0.3$, is consistent with the PHENIX data on $J/ψ$ suppression and nea…
The medium modifications of the masses of the charmonium states (J/$ψ$, $ψ$(3686) and $ψ$(3770)) in asymmetric nuclear matter in the presence of strong magnetic fields are studied using an effective chiral model. The mass modifications arise due to medium modifications of the scalar dilaton field, which simulates the gluon condensates of QCD within the effective hadronic model. The effects due to the magnetic field as well as isospin asymmetry are observed to be appreciable at high densities for the charmonium states, which can have consequences, e,g, in the production of the open charm mesons…
Charged particles $p_T$ spectra and elliptic flow in 0-60% Au+Au collisions at RHIC are analyzed in a hydrodynamic model with hot, hadronic resonance gas in the initial state. Physically conceivable hadronic resonance gas, thermalized in the time scale $τ_i$=1 fm, at a (central) temperature $T_i$=220 MeV, with viscosity to entropy ratio $η/s$=0.24, reasonably well explains $p_T$ spectra in all the collision centralities. Centrality dependence of elliptic flow however demands continual increase of viscosity to entropy ratio with centrality.
We show that if the hadronic resonance gas (HRG), with viscosity to entropy ratio $η/s\approx$0.24, is physical at temperature $T\approx$220 MeV, charged particles $p_T$ spectra and elliptic flow in Au+Au collisions at RHIC, over a wide range of collision centrality do not distinguish between initial QGP fluid and initial hadronic resonance gas. Unambiguous identification of bulk of the matter produced in Au+Au collisions require clear demonstration that HRG is unphysical at temperature $T<$200 MeV. It calls for precise lattice simulations with realistic boundary conditions.
We investigate the in-medium masses of open charm mesons ($D$($D^0$, $D^+$), $\bar{D}$($\bar{D^0}$, $D^-$), $D_s$(${D_{s}}^+$, ${D_{s}}^-$)) and charmonium states ($J/ψ$, $ψ(3686)$, $ψ(3770)$, $χ_{c0}$, $χ_{c2}$) in strongly magnetized isospin asymmetric strange hadronic matter using a chiral effective model. In the presence of the magnetic field, the number density and scalar density of charged baryons have contributions from Landau energy levels. The mass modifications of open charm mesons arise due to their interactions with nucleons, hyperons, and the scalar fields (the non-strange field $…
Thermal Hilbert moment QCD sum rules are used to obtain the temperature dependence of the hadronic parameters of charmonium in the vector channel, i.e. the $J$ / $ψ$ resonance mass, coupling (leptonic decay constant), total width, and continuum threshold. The continuum threshold $s_0$, which signals the end of the resonance region and the onset of perturbative QCD (PQCD), behaves as in all other hadronic channels, i.e. it decreases with increasing temperature until it reaches the PQCD threshold $s_0 = 4 m_Q^2$, with $m_Q$ the charm quark mass, at $T\simeq 1.22 T_c$. The rest of the hadronic pa…
Charmonium production and suppression in In+In and Pb+Pb reactions at SPS energies is investigated with the HSD transport approach within the 'hadronic comover model' as well as the 'QGP threshold scenario'. The results of the transport calculations for J/Psi suppression and the Psi prime to J/Psi ratio are compared with the recent data of the NA50 and NA60 Collaborations. We find that the comover absorption model - with a single parameter |M_0|^2 for the matrix element squared for charmonium-meson dissociation - performs best with respect to all data sets. The 'threshold scenario' - within di…
Charmonia with different transverse momentum $p_T$ usually comes from different mechanisms in the relativistic heavy ion collisions. This work tries to review the theoretical studies on quarkonium evolutions in the deconfined medium produced in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions. The charmonia with high $p_T$ are mainly from the initial hadronic collisions, and therefore sensitive to the initial energy density of the bulk medium. For those charmonia within $0.1<p_T<5$ GeV/c at the energies of Large Hadron Collisions (LHC), They are mainly produced by the recombination of charm and anti-charm quarks in …
The phenomenological analysis of various characteristics of $J/ψ$ and $D$ meson production in PbPb collisions at the center-of-mass energy 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair is presented. The data on momentum spectra and elliptic flow are reproduced by two-component model HYDJET++ including thermal and non-thermal charm production mechanisms. The significant part of $D$-mesons is found to be in a kinetic equilibrium with the created medium, while $J/ψ$-mesons are characterized by earlier (as compared to light hadrons) freeze-out.
Within the Hadron-String Dynamics (HSD) transport approach we study the suppression pattern of charmonia at RHIC with respect to centrality and rapidity employing various model concepts such as variants of the 'comover absorption' model or the 'charmonium melting' scenario. We find that especially the ratio of the forward to mid-rapidity nuclear modification factors of J/Psi (R_AA (forward) / R_AA (mid)) cannot be explained by the interactions with 'formed' comoving mesons or by the 'color screening mechanism' alone. Only when incorporating interactions of the c or c-bar quark with a pre-hadro…
A collision of a light meson and a charmonium produces quarks and antiquarks first, then the charm quark fragments into a charmed hadron, and finally three or more mesons are produced. This is the mechanism that we consider and propose to understand the prompt-J/psi nuclear modification factor in the range of J/psi transverse momentum from 10 GeV/c to 18 GeV/c, as measured by the CMS Collaboration and the ATLAS Collaboration. Unpolarized cross sections are derived and calculated for the reactions pion+charmonium ->H_c+X with H_c being a charmed meson. Numerical cross sections are parametrized …
We calculate transverse-momentum ($p_t$) spectra and elliptic flow of $J/ψ$'s in $Au$-$Au$ and $Cu$-$Cu$ collisions at RHIC. We employ an earlier constructed 2-component approach for direct and regenerated charmonia which is fairly consistent with the centrality dependence of inclusive $J/ψ$ yields at SPS and RHIC. Discrepancies with high-$p_t$ data in $Cu$-$Cu$ collisions are addressed by implementing effects of a finite formation time and an estimate of $B$ meson feeddown, which largely resolve the problem. The sensitivity of the spectra to the Cronin effect and different in-medium dissociat…
Using QCD sum rules and chiral SU(3) model, we investigate the effect of temperature, density, strangeness fraction and isospin asymmetric parameter on the shift in masses and decay constants of the pseudoscalar $D$ and $B$ meson in hadronic medium, which consist of nucleons and hyperons. The in-medium properties of $D$ and $B$ mesons within QCD sum rule approach depend upon the quark and gluon condensates. In chiral SU(3) model, quark and gluon condensates are introduced through the explicit symmetry breaking term and the trace anomaly property of the QCD, respectively and are written in term…
CERN collaboration NA50 has measured charmonium and Drell-Yan dimuon production in Pb+Pb collisions. Parton scattering broadens the transverse momentum, p_T, distributions for these processes. We predict that the average p_T^{2} will flatten in Pb+Pb collisions as a function of the neutral transverse energy of hadrons, E_T, in contrast to the almost-linear rise seen in S+U - psi +X. If seen, such a flattening will support hadronic explanations of charmonium suppression. Figures 2 and 5 are improved and numerous typographical errors are corrected.
The $J/ψ$ absorption cross section by nucleon is studied using a gauged SU(4) hadronic Lagrangian but with empirical particle masses, which has been used previously to study the $J/ψ$ absorption cross section by pion and rho meson. Including both two-body and three-body final states, we find that with a cutoff parameter of 1 GeV at interaction vertices involving charm hadrons, the $J/ψ-N$ absorption is at most 5 mb and is consistent with that extracted from $J/ψ$ production from both photo-nuclear and proton-nucleus reactions.
We study the elliptic flow coefficient v_2(eta,b) in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)=200 A GeV as a function of pseudorapidity eta and impact parameter b. Using a hybrid approach which combines early ideal fluid dynamical evolution with late hadronic rescattering, we demonstrate strong dissipative effects from the hadronic rescattering stage on the elliptic flow. With Glauber model initial conditions, hadronic dissipation is shown to be sufficient to fully explain the differences between measured v_2 values and ideal hydrodynamic predictions. Initial conditions based on the Color Glass Condensate …
We investigate the in-medium masses of $D$ and $\bar{D}$ mesons in the isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter at finite temperatures arising due to the interactions with the nucleons, the scalar isoscalar meson $σ$, and the scalar iso-vector meson $δ$ within a SU(4) model. The in-medium masses of $J/ψ$ and the excited charmonium states ($ψ(3686)$ and $ψ(3770)$) are also calculated in the hot isospin asymmetric nuclear matter in the present investigation. These mass modifications arise due to the interaction of the charmonium states with the gluon condensates of QCD, simulated by a scalar dilaton fi…
The vacuum polarisation effects from the nucleon sector lead to large medium modifications of the vector meson masses in the Walecka model. With a quantum hadrodynamic framework including the quantum effects, and using a quasiparticle description for quark gluon plasma(QGP), the dilepton emission rate from the hot and dense matter resulting from relativistic nuclear collisions is calculated. Using a model for the fireball evolution which has been shown to reproduce other observables such as charmonium suppression, photon emission and the abundance of hadronic species, we compare with the dilep…
The possibility for a common effective field theory for hadronic molecules with different heavy-quark flavours is examined critically. It is argued that such a theory does not allow one to draw definite conclusions for doubly heavy molecules. In particular, it does not allow one to relate binding energies for the molecules in the c-quark and b-quark sectors with controlled uncertainties. Therefore, while this kind of reasoning does not preclude from employing heavy-quark spin symmetry for charmonium- and bottomonium-like states separately within a well established effective field theory framew…
The $NDΛ_c$ and $ND^*Λ_c$ form factors are evaluated in a full QCD sum rule calculation. We study the double Borel sum rule for the three point function of one meson one nucleon and one $Λ_c$ current up to order six in the operator product expansion. The double Borel transform is performed with respect to the nucleon and $Λ_c$ momenta, and the form factor is evaluated as a function of the momentum $Q^2$ of the heavy meson. These form factors are relevant to evaluate the charmonium absorption cross section by hadrons. Our results are compatible with constant form factors in these vertices.
The spectrum of hadrons is important for understanding the confinement of quantum chromodynamics. Many new puzzles arose since 2003 due to the abundance of experimental discoveries with the $XYZ$ structures in the heavy quarkonium mass region being the outstanding examples. Hadronic resonances correspond to poles of the $S$-matrix, which has other types of singularities such as the triangle singularity due to the simultaneous on-shellness of three intermediate particles. Here we briefly discuss a few possible manifestations of triangle singularities in the $XYZ$ physics, paying particular atte…
Several methods for studying the nature of a resonance are applied to resonances recently discovered in the bottonomium and charmonium sectors. We employ the effective-range expansion, the saturation of the width and compositeness of a resonance, as well as direct fits to data. The latter stem from generic $S$-matrix parameterization that account for relevant dynamical features associated to channels that couple strongly in an energy region around the resonance masses, in which their thresholds also lie. We report on results obtained with these methods for the resonances $Z_b(10610)$, $Z_b(106…
Among the newly observed structures in the heavy quarkonium mass region, some are proposed to be hadronic molecules. We investigate the consequences of heavy quark flavor symmetry on these heavy meson hadronic molecules. The symmetry allows us to predict new hadronic molecules on one hand, and test the hadronic molecular assumption of the observed structures on the other hand. We explore the consequences of the flavor symmetry assuming the X(3872) and $Z_b(10610)$ as a isoscalar $D\bar D^*$ and isovector $B\bar B^*$ hadronic molecule, respectively. A series of hadronic molecules composed of he…
Heavy quark and charmonium production as well as their space-time evolution are studied in transport simulations of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. In the partonic transport model Boltzmann Approach of MultiParton Scatterings (BAMPS) heavy quarks can be produced in initial hard parton scatterings or during the evolution of the quark-gluon plasma. Subsequently, they interact with the medium via binary scatterings with a running coupling and a more precise Debye screening which is derived from hard thermal loop calculations, participate in the flow and lose energy. We present results of th…
Charmonium production and suppression in heavy-ion collisions at relativistic energies is investigated within different models, i.e. the comover absorption model, the threshold suppression model, the statistical coalescence model and the HSD transport approach. In HSD the charmonium dissociation cross sections with mesons are described by a simple phase-space parametrization including an effective coupling strength $|M_i|^2$ for the charmonium states $i=χ_c, J/ψ, ψ^\prime$. This allows to include the backward channels for charmonium reproduction by $D \bar{D}$ channels -- which are missed in t…
We review the present status in the theoretical and phenomenological understanding of charmonium and bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions. We start by recapitulating the basic notion of "anomalous quarkonium suppression" in heavy-ion collisions and its recent amendments involving regeneration reactions. We then survey in some detail concepts and ingredients needed for a comprehensive approach to utilize heavy quarkonia as a probe of hot and dense matter. The theoretical discussion encompasses recent lattice QCD computations of quarkonium properties in the Quark-Gluon Plasma, their in…
Results from the data obtained in the first physics run of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) have shown suprisingly large elliptic flow and suprisingly small HBT radii. Attempts to explain both results in a consistant picture have so far been unsuccessful. The present work shows that a thermal model + hadronic rescattering calculation can explain both elliptic flow and HBT results from RHIC. The calculation requires a very early hadronization time of about 1 fm/c after the initial collision of the nuclei.
