Lead iodide perovskites have attracted considerable interest in the upcoming photovoltaic technologies and optoelectronic devices. Therefore, an accurate theoretical description of the electronic and optical properties especially to understand the excitonic effects in this class of materials is of scientific and practical interest. However, despite several theoretical research endeavours in past, the most accurate analysis of the key electronic parameters for solar cell performance, such as optical properties, effective mass, exciton binding energy (E$_B$) and the radiative exciton lifetime are still largely unknown. Here, we employ state-of-the-art first-principles based methodologies viz. hybrid functional(HSE06) combined with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), many-body perturbation theory (GW, BSE), model-BSE (mBSE), Wannier-Mott (WM) and Density Functional Perturbation Theory (DFPT). By taking a prototypical model system viz. APbI$_3$ (A = Formamidinium (FA), methylammonium (MA), and Cs), an exhaustive analysis is presented on the theoretical understanding of the optical, electronic and excitonic properties. We show that tuning of exact exchange parameter ($α$) in HSE06 calculations incorporating SOC, followed by single shot GW, and BSE play a pivotal role in obtaining a reliable predictions for the experimental bandgap. We demonstrate that mBSE approach improves the feature of optical spectra w.r.t experiments. Furthermore, WM approach and ionic contribution to dielectric screening (below 16 meV) ameliorate the E$_B$. Our results reveal that the direct-indirect band gap transition (Rashba splitting) may be a factor responsible for the reduced charge carrier recombination rate in MAPbI$_3$ and FAPbI$_3$. The role of cation ''A'' for procuring the long-lived exciton lifetime is well understood. This proposed methodology allows to design new materials with tailored excitonic properties.
Recently, an aziridinium lead iodide perovskite was proposed as a possible solar cell absorber material. We investigated the stability of this material using a density-functional theory with an emphasis on the ring strain associated with the three-membered aziridinium cation. It is shown that the aziridinium ring is prone to opening within the PbI$_3$ environment. When exposed to moisture, aziridinium lead iodide can readily react with water. The resultant product will not likely be a stoichiometric lead halide perovskite structure.
Highly-efficient solar cells containing lead halide perovskites are expected to revolutionize sustainable energy production in the coming years. Combining these next-generation solar panels with agriculture, can optimize land-use, but brings new risks in case of leakage into the soil. Perovskites are generally assumed to be toxic because of the lead (Pb), but experimental evidence to support this prediction is scarce. We used Arabidopsis thaliana to test the toxicity of the lead-based perovskite MAPbI3 (MA = CH3NH3) and several of its precursors in plants. Our results show that MAPbI3 severely…
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites have been established as good candidate materials for emerging photovoltaics, with device efficiencies of over 22 % being reported. There are currently only two organic cations, methylammonium and formamidinium, which produce 3D perovskites with band gaps suitable for photovoltaic devices. Numerous computational studies have identified azetidinium as a potential third cation for synthesizing organic-inorganic perovskites, but to date no experimental reports of azetidinium containing perovskites have been published. Here we prepare azetidinium lead iodide fo…
The volume of research into organo-lead hailde perovskites is increasing rapidly, with perovskite solar cell efficiencies reaching as high as 22 percent. There is considerable evidence that mobile ions in the perovskite strongly influence the properties of the solar cell, with the majority of studies carried out on whole cells under bias. Here we use muon spin relaxation to directly probe iodide diffusion in methyl ammonium lead iodide (MAPI). This is the first time that has been used to detect iodide diffusion in any material and the results provide valuable insight into the movement of ions …
Open circuit voltage decay measurements are performed on methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3) perovskite solar cells to investigate the charge carrier recombination dynamics. The measurements are compared to the two reference polymer-fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells based on P3HT:PC60BM and PTB7:PC70BM blends. In the perovskite devices, two very different time domains of the voltage decay are found, with a first drop on a short time scale that is similar to the organic solar cells. However, two major differences are also observed. 65-70% of the maximum photovoltage persists on much…
The defect tolerance nature of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite is reflected from its stupendous growth in photovoltaic performances. The presence of lattice defect can manipulate or even gives rise to some exceptional properties which otherwise would have remained unseen. One of such properties reported in this article is the experimental observation of defect mediated room temperature ferromagnetism in methylammonium lead halide perovskite for the very first time, ably supported by ab-initio calculations. Theoretical analysis predicts the ferromagnetism principally arises from the iodide …
The low ionization energy of an $A$ site molecule is a very important factor, which determines the thermodynamical stability of $A$PbI$_3$ hybrid halide perovskites, while the size of the molecule governs the stable phase at room temperature and, eventually, the bandgap. It is challenging to achieve both a low ionization energy and the reasonable size for the PbI$_3$ cage to circumvent the stability issue inherent to hybrid halide perovskites. Here we propose a new three-membered charged ring radical, which demonstrates a low ionization energy that renders a good stability for its correspondin…
For opto-electronic and photo-voltaic applications of perovskites, it is essential to know the optical properties and intrinsic losses of the used materials. A systematic microscopic analysis is presented for the example of methylammonium lead iodide where density functional theory is used to calculate the electronic band structure as well as the dipole and Coulomb matrix elements. These results serve as input for a many-body quantum approach used to compute the absorption, photoluminescence, and the optical and Auger losses for a wide range of application conditions. To illustrate the theory,…
We investigate the basic quantum mechanical processes behind non-proportional response of scintillators to incident radiation responsible for reduced resolution. For this purpose, we conduct a comparative first principles study of quasiparticle spectra on the basis of the $G_0W_0$ approximation as well as absorption spectra and excitonic properties by solving the Bethe-Salpeter equation for two important systems, NaI and SrI$_2$. The former is a standard scintillator material with well-documented non-proportionality while the latter has recently been found to exhibit a very proportional respon…
Despite the widespread use of solution-processable hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites in photovoltaic and light-emitting applications, determination of their intrinsic charge transport parameters has been elusive due to the variability of film preparation and history-dependent device performance. Here we show that screening effects associated to ionic transport can be effectively eliminated by lowering the operating temperature of methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) field-effect transistors (FETs). Field-effect carrier mobility is found to increase by almost two orders of magn…
In this paper we provide an accurate high-pressure structural and optical study of MAPbI3 hybrid perovskite. Structural data show the presence of a phase transition towards an orthorhombic structure around 0.3 GPa followed by full amorphization of the system above 3 GPa. After releasing pressure the systems keeps the high-pressure orthorhombic phase. The occurrence of these structural transitions is further confirmed by pressure induced variations of the photoluminescence signal at high pressure. These variations clearly indicate that the bandgap value and the electronic structure of MAPI chan…
Despite the imperative importance in solar-cell efficiency, the intriguing phenomena at the interface between perovskite solar-cell and adjacent carrier transfer layers are hardly uncovered. Here we show that PbI$_2$/AI-terminated lead-iodide-perovskite (APbI$_3$; A=Cs$^+$/ methylammonium(MA)) interfaced with the charge transport medium of graphene or TiO2 exhibits the sizable/robust Rashba-Dresselhaus (RD) effect using density-functional-theory and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations above cubic-phase temperature. At the PbI$_2$-terminated graphene/CsPbI3(001) interface, ferroelec…
Organic-inorganic halide perovskites have been intensively re-investigated due to their applications, yet the opto-electronic function of the organic cation remains unclear. Through organic-selective resonant Auger electron spectroscopy measurements on well-defined single crystal surfaces, we find evidence for electronic coupling in the unoccupied states between the organic and inorganic sub-lattices of the prototypical hybrid perovskite, which is contrary to the notion based on previous studies that the organic cation is electronically inert. The coupling is relevant for electron dynamics in …
Over the last few years of the heyday of hybrid halide perovskites, so many metal cations additives have been tested to improve their optoelectronic properties that it is already difficult to find an element that has not yet been tried. In general, the variety of these approaches is united under the name "doping", however, there is currently no clear understanding of the mechanisms of the influence of the metal ion additives on the properties of the lead halide perovskite materials. For many ions there is even no consensus on the most fundamental questions: what lattice position does a given i…
The resilience to deep traps and localized defect formation is one of the important aspects that qualify a material as suited photo-absorber in solar cell devices. Here we investigate by ab-initio calculations the fundamental physics and chemistry of a number of possible localized defects in hybrid methylammonium lead-iodide perovskites. Our analysis encompasses a number of possible molecular fragments deriving from the dissociation of methylammonium. In particular, we found that in stoichiometric conditions both ammonia and methylamine molecules present lone-pair localized levels well within …
Methylammonium lead triiodide (CH3NH3PbI3) perovskite solar cell is a gem in the list of photovoltaic semiconductors. Although there are numerous fundamental and technological questions yet to be addressed covering various aspects of this system for its commercialization, this study has employed first-principles DFT to model the [PbI6(CH3NH3)n]m zero-dimensional nanoclusters. Using the calculated binding energy landscapes, it has answered the question: why the corner-sharing PbI6 octahedron is surrounded by eight units of the organic cation in the large-scale supramolecular structures of the C…
Hybrid perovskite thin films have demonstrated impressive performance for solar energy conversion and optoelectronic applications. However, further progress will benefit from a better knowledge of the intrinsic photophysics of materials. Here, the low temperature emission properties of CH3NH3PbI3 single crystals are investigated and compared to those of thin polycrystalline films by means of steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. While the emission properties of thin films and crystals appear relatively similar at room temperature, low temperature photoluminescence spec…
The long charge carrier lifetime of the hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) is the key for their remarkable performance as a solar cell material. The microscopic mechanism for the long lifetime is still in debate. Here, by using muon spin relaxation technique that probes the fluctuation of local magnetic fields, we show that the muon depolarization rate ($Δ$) of a prototype HOIP methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI$_3$) shows a sharp decrease with increasing temperature in two steps above 120 K and 190 K across the structural transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal structure at 162 K.…
Organic-inorganic hybrid halide perovskites, in which the A cations of an ABX$_3$ perovskite are replaced by organic cations, may be used for photovoltaic and solar thermoelectric applications. In this contribution, we systematically study three lead-free hybrid perovskites, i.e., methylammonium tin iodide CH$_3$NH$_3$SnI$_3$, ammonium tin iodide NH$_4$SnI$_3$, and formamidnium tin iodide HC(NH$_2$)$_2$SnI$_3$, by first-principles calculations. We find that in addition to the commonly known motif in which the corner-shared SnI$_6$ octahedra form a three-dimensional network, these materials may…
Transient opto-electrical measurements of methylammonium lead iodide (MALI) perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are performed and analyzed in order to elucidate the operating mechanisms. The current response to a light pulse or voltage pulse shows an extraordinarily broad dynamic range covering 9 orders of magnitude in time - from microseconds to minutes - until steady-state is reached. Evidence of a slowly changing charge density at the perovskite layer boundaries is found, which is most probably caused by mobile ions. Current-voltage curves (IV curves) are measured with very fast scan-rate after k…
We have accurately determined the exciton binding energy and reduced mass of single crystals of methylammonium lead tri-iodide using magneto-reflectivity at very high magnetic fields. The single crystal has excellent optical properties with a narrow line width of $\sim 3$meV for the excitonic transitions and a 2s transition which is clearly visible even at zero magnetic field. The exciton binding energy of $16 \pm 2$meV in the low temperature orthorhombic phase is almost identical to the value found in polycrystalline samples, crucially ruling out any possibility that the exciton binding energ…
In this work, we use density functional theory calculations to demonstrate how spontaneous electric polarizations can be induced \textit{via} a hybrid improper ferroelectric mechanism in iodide perovskites, a family well-known to display solar-optimal band gaps, to create new materials for photoferroic applications. We first assemble three chemically distinct ($A$$A^{\prime}$)($B$$B^{\prime}$)I$_6$ double perovskites using centrosymmetric $AB$I$_3$ perovskite iodides (where $A$ = Cs, Rb, K and $B$ = Sn, Ge) as building units. In each superlattice, we investigate the effects of three types of $…
In band-like semiconductors, charge carriers form a thermal energy distribution rapidly after optical excitation. In hybrid lead halide perovskites, the cooling of such thermal carrier distributions occurs on timescales of ~300 fs via carrier-phonon scattering. However, the initial build-up of the thermal distribution proved difficult to resolve with pump-probe techniques due to the requirement of high resolution, both in time and in energy. Here, we use two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy with sub-10fs resolution to directly observe the carrier interactions that lead to the formation of a…
Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite architecture could serve as a robust platform for materials design to realize functionalities beyond photovoltaic applications. We explore caloric effects in organometal halide perovskites, taking methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI$_3$) as an example, using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations with a first-principles based interatomic potential. The adiabatic thermal change is estimated directly by introducing different driving fields in the simulations. We find that MAPbI$_3$ exhibits both electrocaloric and mechanocaloric effects at room temperature. Loc…
Hybrid perovskites with mixed organic cations such as methylammonium and formamidinium have attracted interest due to their improved stability and capability to tune their properties varying the composition. In this work we report on the local variation of the structural and electronic properties in mixed A-site cation MA/FA lead iodide perovskites FAXMA1-XPBI3 evaluated from static first-principles calculations in certain structures where the orientations of organic cations result from examining the energy landscape of some compositions. The cation replacement at the A-site to form the solid …
Methylammonium lead iodide, as related organometal halide perovskites, emerged recently as a particularly attractive material for photovoltaic applications. The origin of its appealing properties is sometimes assigned to its potential ferroelectric character, which remains however a topic of intense debate. Here, we rationalize from first-principles calculations how the spatial arrangement of methylammonium polar molecules is progressively constrained by the subtle interplay between their tendency to bond with the inorganic framework and the appearance of iodine octahedra rotations inherent to…
We report a structural reconstruction-induced high photoluminescence quantum yield of 25% in colloidal two-dimensional tin iodide nanosheets that are synthesized by a hot-injection method. The as-synthesized red-colored nanosheets of octylammonium tin iodide perovskites at room temperature transform to white hexagonal nanosheets upon washing or exposure to light. This structural change increases the bandgap from 2.0 eV to 3.0 eV, inducing a large Stokes shift and a broadband emission. Further, a long photoluminescence lifetime of about 1 microsecond is measured for the nanosheets. Such long-li…
Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite has attracted intensive interest for its diverse optoelectronic applications. However, most studies to date have been limited to bulk thin films that are difficult to implement for integrated device arrays because of their incompatibility with typical lithography processes. We report the first patterned growth of regular arrays of perovskite microplate crystals for functional electronics and optoelectronics. We show that large arrays of lead iodide microplates can be grown from an aqueous solution through a seeded growth process and can be further intercal…
The speed of sound and elastic properties of single crystals of inorganic and hybrid lead-free iodide perovskites obtained by femtosecond transient optical reflectivity
Environmental effects and intrinsic energy-loss processes lead to fluctuations in the operational temperature of solar cells, which can profoundly influence their power conversion efficiency. Here we determine from first principles the effects of temperature on the band gap and band edges of the hybrid pervoskite CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ by accounting for electron-phonon coupling and thermal expansion. From $290$ to $380$ K, the computed band gap change of $40$ meV coincides with the experimental change of $30$-$40$ meV. The calculation of electron-phonon coupling in CH$_3$NH$_3$PbI$_3$ is particul…

Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid iodide 2D perovskites are put forward as stable alternatives to their 3D counterparts. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that equilibrium concentrations of point defects in the 2D perovskites PEA$_2$PbI$_4$, BA$_2$PbI$_4$, and PEA$_2$SnI$_4$ (PEA: phenethyl ammonium, BA: butylammonium), are much lower than in comparable 3D perovskites. Bonding disruptions by defects are more detrimental in 2D than in 3D networks, making defect formation energetically more costly. The stability of 2D Sn iodide perovskites can be further enhanced by alloying with Pb. Sh…
Lead halide perovskites such as methylammonium lead triiodide (MAPI) have outstanding optical and electronic properties for photovoltaic applications, yet a full understanding of how this solution processable material works so well is currently missing. Previous research has revealed that MAPI possesses multiple forms of static disorder regardless of preparation method, which is surprising in light of its excellent performance. Using high energy resolution inelastic X-ray (HERIX) scattering, we measure phonon dispersions in MAPI and find direct evidence for another form of disorder in single c…
CH3NH3PbI3-based solar cells were characterized with electron beam-induced current (EBIC), and compared to CH3NH3PbI3-xClx ones. A spatial map of charge separation efficiency in working cells shows p-i-n structures for both thin film cells. Effective diffusion lengths, LD, (from EBIC profile) show that holes are extracted significantly more efficiently than electrons in CH3NH3PbI3, explaining why CH3NH3PbI3-based cells require mesoporous electron conductors, while CH3NH3PbI3-xClx ones, where LD values are comparable for both charge types, do not.
Hybrid organic/inorganic perovskites have emerged as efficient semiconductor materials for applications in photovoltaic solar cells with conversion efficiency above 20 \%. Recent experiments have synthesized ultra-thin two-dimensional (2D) organic perovskites with optical properties similar to those of 2D materials like monolayer MoS$_2$: large exciton binding energy and excitonic effects at room temperature. In addition, 2D perovskites are synthesized with a simple fabrication process with potential low-cost and large-scale manufacture. Up to now, state-of-the-art simulations of the excitonic…
The most studied perovskite-based solar cells reported up to date contain the toxic lead in its composition. Photovoltaic research and development towards non-toxic, lead-free perovskite solar cells are critical to finding alternatives to reduce human health concerns associated with them. Bismuth-based perovskite variants, especially in the form of methylammonium bismuth iodide (MBI), is a good candidate for the non-toxic light absorber. However, the reported perovskite variant MBI thin flms prepared by the solution process so far suffers from poor morphology and surface coverage. In this work…
We perform a thorough structural search with the minima hopping method (MHM) to explore low-energy structures of methylammonium lead iodide. By combining the MHM with a forcefield, we efficiently screen vast portions of the configurational space with large simulation cells containing up to 96 atoms. Our search reveals two structures of methylammonium iodide perovskite (MAPI) that are substantially lower in energy than the well-studied experimentally observed low-temperature $Pnma$ orthorhombic phase according to density functional calculations. Both structures have not yet been reported in the…
Perovskite solar cells have achieved a substantial breakthrough via advanced interface engineerings. Reports have emphasized that combining the hybrid perovskites with Lewis base and graphene improve the performance; the underlying mechanisms are not yet fully understood. Here, using density functional theory, we show that upon the formation of CH3NH3PbI3 interfaces with three different Lewis base molecules and graphene, the binding strength with S-donors thiocarbamide and thioacetamide is higher than with O-donor dimethyl sulfoxide, while the interface dipole and work function reduction tend …
The chemical stability of methylammonium lead iodide (\ce{MAPbI3}) under humid conditions remains the primary challenge facing halide perovskite solar cells. We investigate defect processes in the water-intercalated iodide perovskite (\ce{MAPbI3}\_\ce{H2O}) and monohydrated phase (\ce{MAPbI3}$\cdot$\ce{H2O}) within a first-principles thermodynamic framework. We consider the formation energies of isolated and aggregated vacancy defects with different charge states under I-rich and I-poor conditions. It is found that a \ce{PbI2} (partial Schottky) vacancy complex can be formed readily, while the…
We study the light-absorbing states of the mixed-halide perovskite CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$PbI$_2$Cl and tri-iodide perovskite CH$_{3}$NH$_{3}$PbI$_3$ with density functional and many-body calculations to explain the desirable photovolatic features of these materials. The short-lived electron-hole bound states produced in this photovoltaic material are of halide to lead electron transfer character, with a Wannier-type exciton. Bethe-Salpeter (GW+BSE) calculations of the absorption cross section reveal strong screening of the electron-hole interaction. The atomic character of the exciton retains ligand…
Mixing halides in metal halide perovskites (MHPs) is an effective approach to adjust MHPs bandgap for applications in tandem solar cells. However, mixed-halide (MH-) MHPs undergo light-induced-phase-segregation (LIPS) under continuous illumination. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of LIPS is necessary for developing stable MH-MHPs. In this work, we investigated LIPS in layered (L) MHPs and discovered a critical role of spacer cations in LIPS. Through probing chemical changes of LIPS, we unveil light-induced-iodide-repulsion and the formation of Br-rich-phase in illuminated regions during…
Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have become an important class of semiconductors for solar cells and other optoelectronic applications. Electron-phonon coupling plays a critical role in all optoelectronic devices, and although the lattice dynamics and phonon frequencies of HOIPs have been well studied, little attention has been given to phonon lifetimes. We report the first high-precision measurements of acoustic phonon lifetimes in the hybrid perovskite methylammonium lead iodide (MAPI), using inelastic neutron spectroscopy to provide high energy resolution and fully deuterated s…
We report the synthesis and crystal structure of an organic inorganic compound, ethylenediammonium lead iodide, NH3CH2CH2NH3PbI4. Synchrotron based single crystal X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that the pristine and thermally treated crystals differ in the organic cation behaviour, which is characterized by a partial disorder in the thermally treated crystal. Based on current voltage measurements, increased disorder of the organic cation is associated with enhanced photoconductivity. This compound could be a potential candidate for interface engineering in lead halide perovskite-based …
Materials combining the optoelectronic functionalities of semiconductors with control of the spin degree of freedom are highly sought after for the advancement of quantum technology devices. Here, we report the paramagnetic Ruddlesden-Popper hybrid perovskite Mn:(PEA)2PbI4 (PEA = phenethylammonium) in which the interaction of isolated Mn2+ ions with magnetically brightened excitons leads to circularly polarized photoluminescence. Using a combination of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and magneto-optical experiments, we find that the Brillouin-shaped polarizatio…
We present a systematic investigation of the role and importance of excitonic effects on the optical properties of transitions metal oxide perovskites. A representative set of fourteen compounds has been selected, including 3$d$ (SrTiO$_3$, LaScO$_3$, LaTiO$_3$, LaVO$_3$, LaCrO$_3$, LaMnO$_3$, LaFeO$_3$ and SrMnO$_3$), 4$d$ (SrZrO$_3$, SrTcO$_3$ and Ca$_2$RuO$_4$) and 5$d$ (SrHfO$_3$, KTaO$_3$ and NaOsO$_3$) perovskites, covering a band gap ranging from 0.1 eV to 6.1 eV and exhibiting different electronic, structural and magnetic properties. Optical conductivities and optical transitions inclu…
High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) is a powerful tool for structure characterization. However, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite is highly sensitive to electron beams and easily decompose into lead iodide (PbI2). Universal misidentifications that PbI2 is incorrectly labeled as perovskite are widely exist in HRTEM characterization, which would negatively affect the development of perovskite research field. Here misidentifications in MAPbI3 perovskite calibration are summarized, classified and corrected based on corresponding electron diffraction (ED) simulations. Corresponding crystallogr…
