High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) is a powerful tool for structure characterization. However, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite is highly sensitive to electron beams and easily decompose into lead iodide (PbI2). Universal misidentifications that PbI2 is incorrectly labeled as perovskite are widely exist in HRTEM characterization, which would negatively affect the development of perovskite research field. Here misidentifications in MAPbI3 perovskite calibration are summarized, classified and corrected based on corresponding electron diffraction (ED) simulations. Corresponding crystallographic parameters of intrinsic tetragonal MAPbI3 and the confusable hexagonal PbI2 are also presented clearly. Finally, the method of proper phase identification and some ways to control the radiation damage in HRTEM are provided. This work paves the way to avoid misleadings in HRTEM characterization of perovskite and other electron beam-sensitive materials in the future.
Inorganic lead halide perovskite materials have attracted great attention recently due to their potential for greater thermal stability compared to hybrid organic perovskites. However, the high processing temperature to convert from the non-perovskite phase to cubic perovskite phase in many of these systems has limited their application in flexible optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a room temperature processed inorganic PSC based on CsPbI2Br as the light harvesting layer. By combing this composition with key precursor solvents, we show that the inorganic perovskite film can be prepared b…
The optical amplification emission of hybrid lead perovskite attracted great research interests. We systematically examined and compared temperature dependent optical amplification behavior of a series of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite films of (MA/FA)Pb(Br/I)3. The optical amplification threshold of the films showed considerable exponential increase towards the temperature increasing. We figured out that the critical temperature for the four films presented a sequence of FA+I < MA+I < FA+Br < MA+Br. Our systematical study is crucial for in depth understanding the fundamental mechanism of…
Lead-halide perovskites have demonstrated astonishing increases in power conversion efficiency in photovoltaics over the last decade. The most efficient perovskite devices now outperform industry-standard multi-crystalline silicon solar cells, despite the fact that perovskites are typically grown at low temperature using simple solution-based methods. However, the toxicity of lead and its ready solubility in water are concerns for widespread implementation. These challenges, alongside the many successes of the perovskites, have motivated significant efforts across multiple disciplines to find …
Halide perovskites have recently gained widespread attention for their exceptional optoelectronic properties which have been illuminated by extensive spectroscopic investigations. In this article, nanophotonic surface-engineering using soft-lithography has been used to reproduce nanostructures with enhanced functionalities. A non-invasive optical technique based on Raman and photolumines-cence (PL) spectroscopy is employed to investigate the interactive effect of the thermal and optical behaviour in surface-patterned hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite thin films. The thermophys-ical pr…
Lead halide perovskites are a remarkable class of materials that have emerged over the past decade as being suitable for application in a broad range of devices, such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, transistors, and memory devices, among others. While they are often solution-processed semiconductors deposited at low temperatures, perovskites exhibit properties one would only expect from highly pure inorganic crystals that are grown at high temperatures. This unique phenomenon has resulted in fast-paced progress toward record device performance; unfortunately, the basic science b…
The defect tolerance nature of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite is reflected from its stupendous growth in photovoltaic performances. The presence of lattice defect can manipulate or even gives rise to some exceptional properties which otherwise would have remained unseen. One of such properties reported in this article is the experimental observation of defect mediated room temperature ferromagnetism in methylammonium lead halide perovskite for the very first time, ably supported by ab-initio calculations. Theoretical analysis predicts the ferromagnetism principally arises from the iodide …
Owing to its superior visible light absorption and high chemical stability, chalcogenide perovskite barium zirconium sulfide has attracted significant attention in the past few years as a potential alternative to hybrid halide perovskites for optoelectronics. However, the high processing temperatures of BaZrS3 thin films at above 1000 C severely limits their potential for device applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of BaZrS3 thin films at temperatures as low as 500 C, by changing the chemical reaction pathway. The single phase BaZrS3 thin film was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Ra…
We predict through our first-principles calculations that four double perovskite oxides of Bi2ABO6 (AB = FeMo, MnMo, MnOs, CrOs) are half-metallic ferrimagnets. Our calculated results shows that the four optimized structures have negative formation energy, from -0.42 to -0.26 eV per formula unit, which implies that they could probably be realized. In the case of Bi2FeMoO6, the half-metallic gap and Curie temperature are predicted to reach to 0.71 eV and 650 K, respectively, which indicates that high spin polarization could be kept at high temperatures far beyond room temperature. It is believe…
Lead halide perovskites are causing a change of paradigm in photovoltaics. Among other peculiarities, these perovskites exhibit an atypical temperature dependence of the fundamental optical gap: It decreases in energy with decreasing temperature. So far reports ascribe such a behavior to a particularly strong electron-phonon renormalization of the band gap, neglecting completely contributions from thermal expansion effects. However, high pressure experiments performed, for instance, on the archetypal perovskite MAPbI$_3$, where MA stands for methylammonium, yield a negative pressure coefficien…
Using density functional calculations we explore the properties of as-yet-unsynthesized $3d - 5d$ ordered double perovskites ($A_2BB'$O$_6$) with highly polarizable Bi$^{3+}$ ions on the $A$ site. We find that the Bi$_2$NiReO$_6$ and Bi$_2$MnReO$_6$ compounds are insulating and exhibit a robust net magnetization that persists above room temperature. When the in-plane lattice vectors of the pseudocubic unit cell are constrained to be orthogonal (for example, by coherent heteroepitaxy), the ground states are ferroelectric with large polarization and a very large uniaxial magnetocrystalline aniso…
Heterovalent substitution of toxic lead is an increasingly popular design strategy to obtain environmentally sustainable variants of the exciting material class of halide perovskites. Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) obtained through solution-based methods exhibit exceedingly high optical quality. Unfortunately, most of these synthesis routes still require reaction under inert gas and at very high temperatures. Herein we present a novel synthesis routine for lead-free double perovskite NCs. We combine hot injection and ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) methods to achieve a low-temperature an…

The high efficiency of lead organo-metal-halide perovskite solar cells has raised many questions about the role of the methylammonium (MA) molecules in the Pb-I framework. Experiments indicate that the MA molecules are able to 'freely' spin around at room temperature even though they carry an intrinsic dipole moment. We have performed large supercell (2592 atoms) finite temperature ab-initio molecular dynamics calculations to study the correlation between the molecules in the framework. An underlying long range anti-ferroelectric ordering of the molecular dipoles is observed. The dynamical cor…
Discovering materials that display a linear magnetoelectric effect at room temperature is challenge. Such materials could facilitate novel devices based on the electric-field control of magnetism. Here we present simple, chemically intuitive design rules to identify a new class of bulk magnetoelectric materials based on the 'bicolor' layering of $Pnma$ ferrite perovskites, e.g., LaFeO$_3$/ LnFeO$_3$ superlattices for which Ln = lanthanide cation. We use first-principles density-functional theory calculations to confirm these ideas. Additionally, we elucidate the origin of this effect and show …
Perovskite solar cells with record power conversion efficiency are fabricated by alloying both hybrid and fully inorganic compounds. While the basic electronic properties of the hybrid perovskites are now well understood, key electronic parameters for solar cell performance, such as the exciton binding energy of fully inorganic perovskites, are still unknown. By performing magneto transmission measurements, we determine with high accuracy the exciton binding energy and reduced mass of fully inorganic CsPbX$_3$ perovskites (X=I, Br, and an alloy of these). The well behaved (continuous) evolutio…
Using finite-temperature phonon calculations and machine-learning methods, we calculate the mechanical stability of about 400 semiconducting oxides and fluorides with cubic perovskite structures at 0 K, 300 K and 1000 K. We find 92 mechanically stable compounds at high temperatures -- including 36 not mentioned in the literature so far -- for which we calculate the thermal conductivity. We demonstrate that the thermal conductivity is generally smaller in fluorides than in oxides, largely due to a lower ionic charge, and describe simple structural descriptors that are correlated with its magnit…

Double perovskites Sr2FeOsO6 and Ca2FeOsO6 show puzzling magnetic properties, the former a low-temperature antiferromagnet while the later a high-temperature insulating ferrimagnet. Here, in order to understand the underlying mechanism, we have investigated the frustrated magnetism of A2FeOsO6 by employing density functional theory and maximally-localized Wannier functions. We find that lattice distortion enhances the antiferromagnetic nearest-neighboring Fe-O-Os interaction but weakens the antiferromagnetic interactions through the Os-O-O-Os and Fe-O-Os-O-Fe paths, which is responsible for th…

High-temperature electronic materials are in constant demand as the required operational range for various industries increases. Here we design $(A,A^\prime)B_2$O$_6$ perovskite oxides with [111] ``rock salt" $A$-site cation order and predict them to be potential high-temperature piezoelectric materials. By selecting bulk perovskites which have a tendency towards only out-of-phase $B$O$_6$ rotations, we avoid possible staggered ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transitions while also retaining non-centrosymmetric crystal structures necessary for ferro- and piezoelectricity. Using density fun…
Determining the finite temperature structure of the hybrid perovskite MAPbI3 is a challenge for both experimental and theoretical methods. A very powerful computational method that can resolve the atomic structure is molecular dynamics (MD). The resulting structure depends on the density functional approximation (DFA) in the case of ab initio MD and the force field in classical MD. We compare the structure between 250K and 400K obtained with different DFAs and force fields in one consistent manner. The symmetry of the PbI3 framework is analyzed as well as the relative ordering of the neighbori…
High-temperature thermopower is interpreted as entropy that a carrier carries. Owing to spin and orbital degrees of freedom, a transition metal perovskite exhibits large thermopower at high temperatures. In this paper, we revisit the high-temperature thermopower in the perovskites to shed light on the degrees of freedom. Thus, we theoretically derive an expression of thermopower in one-dimensional octahedral-MX6-clusters chain using linear-response theory and electronic structure calculation of the chain based on the tight-binding approximation. The derived expression of the thermopower is con…
The ordered double perovskites Sr2CrOsO6 and Ca2CrOsO6 have been synthesized and characterized with neutron powder diffraction, electrical transport measurements, and high field magnetization experiments. Sr2CrOsO6 and Ca2CrOsO6 crystallize with R-3 and P21/n space group symmetry, respectively. Both materials are found to be ferrimagnetic insulators with saturation magnetizations near 0.2 μB. Sr2CrOsO6 orders at 660 K, showing non-monotonic magnetization temperature dependence, while Ca2CrOsO6 orders at 490 K and does not show non-monotonic behavior. Evidence for a theoretically predicted cant…
Using finite-temperature phonon calculations and the Lyddane-Sachs-Teller relations, we calculate ab initio the static dielectric constants of 78 semiconducting oxides and fluorides with cubic perovskite structures at 1000 K. We first compare our method with experimental measurements, and we find that it succeeds in describing the temperature dependence and the relative ordering of the static dielectric constant $ε_{DC}$ in the series of oxides BaTiO$_{3}$, SrTiO$_{3}$, KTaO$_{3}$. We show that the effects of anharmonicity on the ion-clamped dielectric constant, on Born charges, and on phonon …
Double perovskites Sr$_2$FeMO$_6$ (M=Mo and Re) exhibit significant colossal magnetoresistance even at room temperature due to the high Curie Temperature (419K and 401K). However, such a high Curie Temperature is puzzling, given the large separation between magnetic elements (Fe). Moreover, with M=W, the electronic and magnetic properties suddenly change to insulating and antiferromagnetic with the N{é}el temperature of only 16$\sim$37 K. Based on detailed electronic structure calculations, a new mechanism is proposed which stabilizes the strong ferromagnetic state for M=Mo and Re and is passi…
Scanning nanofocus X-ray diffraction (nXRD) performed at a synchrotron is used for the first time to simultaneously probe the morphology and the structural properties of spin-coated CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI) perovskite films for photovoltaic devices. MAPI films are spin-coated on a Si/SiO2/PEDOT:PSS substrate held at different temperatures during the deposition in order to tune the perovskite film coverage, and then investigated by nXRD, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scatter-ing (GI-WAXS). The advantages of nXRD over SEM and GI-WAXS are dis-cussed. A method …
Current technologies for X-ray detection rely on scintillation from expensive inorganic crystals grown at high-temperature, which so far has hindered the development of large-area scintillator arrays. Thanks to the presence of heavy atoms, solution-grown hybrid lead halide perovskite single crystals exhibit short X-ray absorption length and excellent detection efficiency. Here we compare X-ray scintillator characteristics of three-dimensional (3D) MAPbI3 and MAPbBr3 and two-dimensional (2D) (EDBE)PbCl4 hybrid perovskite crystals. X-ray excited thermoluminescence measurements indicate the absen…
A mean field approximation of a model for double perovskites that takes into account the coupling between itinerant electron spins and localized spins is developed. As in previously reported theoretical results, and contrary to experimental observation, the critical temperature is suppressed for large electron density. An effective Heisenberg model reveals the cause of this discrepancy: the competition between degenerate antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic channels. This degeneracy can be broken by the inclusion of a Hubbard-type U term. It is therefore suggested that electron correlation effe…
Two-dimensional halide perovskite nanoplatelets (NPLs) have exceptional light-emitting properties, including wide spectral tunability, ultrafast radiative decays, high quantum yields (QY), and oriented emission. To realize efficient devices, it is imperative to understand how exciton transport progresses in NPL thin films. Due to the high binding energies of electron-hole pairs, excitons are generally considered the dominant species responsible for carrier transfer. We employ spatially and temporally resolved optical microscopy to map exciton diffusion in perovskite nanocrystal (NC) thin films…
Hexagonal oxide perovskites, in contrast to the more familiar perovskites, allow for face-sharing of metal-oxygen octahedra or trigonal prisms within their structural frameworks. This results in dimers, trimers, tetramers, or longer fragments of chains of face-sharing octahedra in the crystal structures, and consequently in much shorter metal-metal distances and lower metal-oxygen-metal bond angles than are seen in the more familiar perovskites. The presence of the face-sharing octahedra can have a dramatic impact on magnetic properties of these compounds, and dimer-based materials, in particu…
Double perovskite-based magnets wherein frustration and competition between emergent degrees of freedom are at play can lead to novel electronic and magnetic phenomena. Herein, we report the electronic structure and magnetic properties of an ordered double perovskite material Ho2CoMnO6. In the double perovskite with general class A2BB'O6, the octahedral B and B'-site has a distinct crystallographic site. The Rietveld refinement of XRD data reveals that Ho2CoMnO6 crystallizes in the monoclinic P21/n space group. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the charge state of cations present i…
In insulating materials with ordered magnetic spiral phases, ferroelectricity can emerge due to the breaking of inversion symmetry. This property is of both fundamental and practical interest, in particular with a view to exploiting it in low-power electronic devices. Advances towards technological applications have been hindered, however, by the relatively low ordering temperatures $T_\mathrm{spiral}$ of most magnetic spiral phases, which rarely exceed 100 K. We have recently established that the ordering temperature of a magnetic spiral can be increased up to 310 K by the introduction of che…
