Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have recently emerged as groundbreaking semiconductor materials owing to their remarkable properties. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), as a very powerful characterization tool, has been widely used in perovskite materials for structural analysis and phase identification. However, the perovskites are highly sensitive to electron beams and easily decompose into PbX2 (X= I, Br, Cl) and metallic Pb. The electron dose of general high-resolution TEM is much higher than the critical dose of MAPbI3, which results in universal misidentifications that PbI2 and Pb are incorrectly labeled as perovskite. The widely existed mistakes have negatively affected the development of perovskite research fields. Here misidentifications of the best-known MAPbI3 perovskite are summarized and corrected, then the causes of mistakes are classified and ascertained. Above all, a solid method for phase identification and practical strategies to reduce the radiation damage for perovskite materials have also been proposed. This review aims to provide the causes of mistakes and avoid misinterpretations in perovskite research fields in the future.
High-resolution TEM (HRTEM) is a powerful tool for structure characterization. However, methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) perovskite is highly sensitive to electron beams and easily decompose into lead iodide (PbI2). Universal misidentifications that PbI2 is incorrectly labeled as perovskite are widely exist in HRTEM characterization, which would negatively affect the development of perovskite research field. Here misidentifications in MAPbI3 perovskite calibration are summarized, classified and corrected based on corresponding electron diffraction (ED) simulations. Corresponding crystallogr…

Ba2CaMoO6 was synthesized by solid state method. The crystal structure adopts cubic Fm-3m space group at room temperature with lattice parameters of 8.378231(5) {angstroms}. Upon cooling, Ba2CaMoO6 was determined to have a structural phase transition to tetragonal I4/m (a=5.905763(6) {angstroms} and c=8.38817(1) {angstroms}) around 200 K. The phase transition was probed structurally by synchrotron and neutron diffraction and thermodynamically by specific heat and differential scanning calorimetry measurement. This structural phase transition will deepens our understanding of the perovskite fam…
The defect tolerance nature of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite is reflected from its stupendous growth in photovoltaic performances. The presence of lattice defect can manipulate or even gives rise to some exceptional properties which otherwise would have remained unseen. One of such properties reported in this article is the experimental observation of defect mediated room temperature ferromagnetism in methylammonium lead halide perovskite for the very first time, ably supported by ab-initio calculations. Theoretical analysis predicts the ferromagnetism principally arises from the iodide …
Lead halide perovskites are causing a change of paradigm in photovoltaics. Among other peculiarities, these perovskites exhibit an atypical temperature dependence of the fundamental optical gap: It decreases in energy with decreasing temperature. So far reports ascribe such a behavior to a particularly strong electron-phonon renormalization of the band gap, neglecting completely contributions from thermal expansion effects. However, high pressure experiments performed, for instance, on the archetypal perovskite MAPbI$_3$, where MA stands for methylammonium, yield a negative pressure coefficien…
Perovskite-based optoelectronic devices have shown great promise for solar conversion and other optoelectronic applications, but their long-term performance instability is regarded as a major obstacle to their widespread deployment. Previous works have shown that the ultralow thermal conductivity and inefficient heat spreading might put an intrinsic limit on the lifetime of perovskite devices. Here, we report the observation of a remarkably efficient thermal conductance, with conductivity of 11.2 +/- 0.8 W m^-1 K^-1 at room temperature, in densely-packed perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 films, via noncon…
Heterovalent substitution of toxic lead is an increasingly popular design strategy to obtain environmentally sustainable variants of the exciting material class of halide perovskites. Perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) obtained through solution-based methods exhibit exceedingly high optical quality. Unfortunately, most of these synthesis routes still require reaction under inert gas and at very high temperatures. Herein we present a novel synthesis routine for lead-free double perovskite NCs. We combine hot injection and ligand-assisted reprecipitation (LARP) methods to achieve a low-temperature an…
Discovering materials that display a linear magnetoelectric effect at room temperature is challenge. Such materials could facilitate novel devices based on the electric-field control of magnetism. Here we present simple, chemically intuitive design rules to identify a new class of bulk magnetoelectric materials based on the 'bicolor' layering of $Pnma$ ferrite perovskites, e.g., LaFeO$_3$/ LnFeO$_3$ superlattices for which Ln = lanthanide cation. We use first-principles density-functional theory calculations to confirm these ideas. Additionally, we elucidate the origin of this effect and show …
We have investigated the temperature-dependent Raman-active phonons and the magnetic properties of Gd(Co1/2Mn1/2)O3 perovskite ceramics in the temperature range from 40 K to 300 K. The samples crystallized in an orthorhombic distorted simple perovskite, whose symmetry belongs to the Pnma space group. The data reveals spin-phonon coupling near the ferromagnetic transition occurring at around 120 K. The correlation of the Raman and magnetization data suggests that the structural order influences the magnitude of the spin-phonon coupling.
It has been long known that numerous halide and oxide perovskites can have non-ideal octahedra, showing tilting, rotation, and metal atom displacements. It has also been known that compounds that have at low temperatures a single structural motif ("monomorphous structures") could become disordered at higher temperatures, resulting in non-ideal octahedra as an entropy effect. What is shown here is that in many cubic halide perovskites and some oxides compounds a distribution of different low-symmetry octahedra ("polymorphous networks") emerge already from the minimization of the systems interna…

The temperature anomalies in the Earth's mantle associated with thermal convection1 can be inferred from seismic tomography, provided that the elastic properties of mantle minerals are known as a function of temperature at mantle pressures. At present, however, such information is difficult to obtain directly through laboratory experiments. We have therefore taken advantage of recent advances in computer technology, and have performed finite-temperature ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of the elastic properties of MgSiO3 perovskite, the major mineral of the lower mantle, at relevant th…
Using data obtained from first-principles calculations, we show that the position of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and transition temperature at MPB in ferroelectric perovskite solutions can be predicted with quantitative accuracy from the properties of the constituent cations. We find that the mole fraction of PbTiO$_3$ at MPB in Pb(B$'$B$''$)O$_3$-PbTiO$_3$, BiBO$_3$-PbTiO$_3$ and Bi(B$'$B$''$)O$_3$-PbTiO$_3$ exhibits a linear dependence on the ionic size (tolerance factor) and the ionic displacements of the B-cations as found by density functional theory calculations. This dependenc…
Transition-metal perovskite oxides constitute a series of functional material systems for electronics, catalysis and energy-conversion processes, in which oxygen migration and evolution play a key role. However, the stable metal-oxygen (M-O) bond forms large energy barrier inhibiting ion diffusion. Therefore, seeking efficient and facile approaches to accelerate oxygen kinetics has become a significant issue. Here, the interaction (interfacial charge transfer and cooperative bonding) between noble metal (Pt, Ag) and perovskites oxide (SrCoO3-delta) is employed to weaken (M-O) bond and decrease…
High-temperature electronic materials are in constant demand as the required operational range for various industries increases. Here we design $(A,A^\prime)B_2$O$_6$ perovskite oxides with [111] ``rock salt" $A$-site cation order and predict them to be potential high-temperature piezoelectric materials. By selecting bulk perovskites which have a tendency towards only out-of-phase $B$O$_6$ rotations, we avoid possible staggered ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transitions while also retaining non-centrosymmetric crystal structures necessary for ferro- and piezoelectricity. Using density fun…
Two-dimensional (2D) halide perovskites have emerged as semiconductor platforms for realizing efficient and durable optoelectronic devices. However, the reproducible synthesis of 2D perovskite crystals with desired layer thickness (or n value) greater than 2, has been an enduring challenge due to the lack of kinetic control (temperature, time, stoichiometry) for each layer thickness. Here, we demonstrate a novel method term as the kinetically controlled space confinement (KCSC) for the deterministic growth of phase pure Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) and Dion-Jacobson (DJ) 2D perovskites. The phase-pu…
Using density functional theory, we investigate systematically mixed MA(Pb:Sn)X3 perovskites, where MA is CH3NH3+, and X is Cl, Br, or I. Ab initio calculations of the orthorhombic, tetragonal, and cubic perovskite phases show that the substitution of lead by tin has a much weaker influence on both structure and cohesive energies than the substitution of the halogen. The thermodynamic stability of the MA(Pb:Sn)X3 mixtures at finite, non-zero temperatures is studied within the Regular Solution Model. We predict that it will be possible to create MA(Pb:Sn)I3 mixtures at any temperature. Our resu…
Halide perovskites are a promising class of materials for optoelectronic applications, due to their excellent optoelectronic performance. However, they suffer several dynamical degradation problems, the characterization of which is challenging in experiments. Atomic scale simulations can provide valuable insights, however, the high computational cost of traditional quantum mechanical methods such as DFT makes it difficult to model dynamical processes in large perovskite systems. In this work, we present a re-parameterized GFN1-xTB method for the accurate description of structural and dynamical…
To address the effects of lattice anharmonicity across the perovskite to post-perovskite transition in MgSiO$_3$, we conduct calculations using the phonon quasiparticle (PHQ) approach. The PHQ is based on \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics and, in principle, captures full anharmonicity. Free energies in the thermodynamic limit ($N \rightarrow \infty$) are computed using temperature-dependent quasiparticle dispersions within the phonon gas model. Systematic results on anharmonic thermodynamic properties and phase boundary are reported. Both the local density approximation (LDA) and the gener…
The organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 has attracted significant interest for its high performance in converting solar light into electrical power with an efficiency exceeding 20%. Unfortunately, chemical stability is one major challenge in the development of the CH3NH3PbI3 solar cells. It was commonly assumed that moisture or oxygen in the environment causes the poor stability of hybrid halide perovskites, however, here we show from the first-principles calculations that the room-temperature tetragonal phase of CH3NH3PbI3 is thermodynamically unstable with respect to the phase sep…
This review devoted to multiferroic properties of Bismuth-based perovskites falls into two parts. The first part focuses on BiFeO3 and summarizes the recent progress made in the studies of its pressure-temperature phase diagram and magnetoelectric coupling phenomena. The second part discusses in a more general way the issue of polar - and multiferroic - phases in BiBO3 perovskites and the competition between ferroelectricity and other structural instabilities, from an inventory of recently synthetized compounds.
Great success has been achieved in improving the photovoltaic energy conversion efficiency of the organic-inorganic perovskite-based solar cells, but with very limited knowledge on the thermal transport in hybrid perovskites, which would affect the device lifetime and stability. Based on the potential developed from the density functional theory calculations, we studied the lattice thermal conductivity of the hybrid halide perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 using equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. Temperature-dependent thermal conductivity is reported from 160 K to 400 K, which covers the tetragon…
Mixed iodine-bromine perovskites used in solar cells undergo below a critical temperature an intrinsic demixing into phases with different iodine-bromine compositions. In addition, under illumination they show nucleation of an iodine-rich phase. We predict from thermodynamic considerations that in mixed iodine-bromine perovskites like MAPb(I$_{1-x}$Br$_x$)$_3$ the interplay of these effects can lead to coexistence of a bromine-rich, iodine-rich, and nearly iodine-pure nucleated phase. This three-phase coexistence occurs in a region in the composition-temperature phase diagram near the critical…
We explain the phenomena of ferroelectric phase transition temperature $T_c$ enhancement beyond the end members in perovskite solid solutions like BiMeO$_3$-PbTiO$_3$ (Me=Sc, In, etc.) is related to nonlinear and spatial correlation effects. The explanation is based on the calculation of $T_c$ in the framework of our random field theory with additional account for nonlinear effects in the above substances. We show that the maximum of $T_c$ for certain PbTiO$_3$ content takes place when coefficient of nonlinearity is positive, the value of this coefficient is found from best fit between theory …
Halide perovskites make efficient solar cells due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties, but suffer from several stability issues. The characterization of the degradation processes is challenging because of the limitations in the spatio-temporal resolution in experiments and the absence of efficient computational methods to study the reactive processes. Here, we present the first effort in developing reactive force fields for large scale molecular dynamics simulations of the phase instability and the defect-induced degradation reactions in inorganic CsPbI$_{3}$. We find that the phase…
Inorganic lead halide perovskite materials have attracted great attention recently due to their potential for greater thermal stability compared to hybrid organic perovskites. However, the high processing temperature to convert from the non-perovskite phase to cubic perovskite phase in many of these systems has limited their application in flexible optoelectronic devices. Here, we report a room temperature processed inorganic PSC based on CsPbI2Br as the light harvesting layer. By combing this composition with key precursor solvents, we show that the inorganic perovskite film can be prepared b…
Using finite-temperature phonon calculations and machine-learning methods, we calculate the mechanical stability of about 400 semiconducting oxides and fluorides with cubic perovskite structures at 0 K, 300 K and 1000 K. We find 92 mechanically stable compounds at high temperatures -- including 36 not mentioned in the literature so far -- for which we calculate the thermal conductivity. We demonstrate that the thermal conductivity is generally smaller in fluorides than in oxides, largely due to a lower ionic charge, and describe simple structural descriptors that are correlated with its magnit…
Perovskites have proven to be a promising candidate for highly-efficient solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and X-ray detectors, overcoming limitations of inorganic semiconductors. However, they are notoriously unstable. The main reason for this instability is the migration of mobile ions through the device during operation, as they are mixed ionic-electronic conductors. Here we show how measuring the capacitance in both the frequency and the time domain can be used to study ionic dynamics within perovskite-based devices, quantifying activation energy, diffusion coefficient, sign of charge, c…
Roles of orbital degree of freedom of Mn ions in phase transition as a function of temperature and hole concentration in perovskite manganites are studied. It is shown that the orbital order-disorder transition is of the first order in the wide region of hole concentration and the N$\rm \acute{e}$el temperature for the anisotropic spin ordering, such as the layer-type antiferromagnetic one, is lower than the orbital ordering temperature due to the anisotropy in the orbital space. The calculated results of the temperature dependence of the spin and orbital order parameters explain a variety of …
Under continuous light illumination, it is known that localized domains with segregated halide compositions form in semiconducting mixed-halide perovskites, thus severely limiting their optoelectronic applications due to the negative changes in bandgap energies and charge-carrier characteristics. Here we deposit mixed-halide perovskite CsPbBr1.2I1.8 nanocrystals onto an indium tin oxide substrate, whose temperature can be rapidly changed by ~10 degree in a few seconds by applying or removing an external voltage. Such a sudden temperature change induces a temporary transition of CsPbBr1.2I1.8 n…
We have performed quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the equations of state of MgSiO$_3$ perovskite (Pv) and post-perovskite (PPv), up to the pressure and temperature conditions of the base of Earth's lower mantle. The ground state energies were derived using QMC and the temperature dependent Helmholtz free energies were calculated within the quasi-harmonic approximation and density functional perturbation theory. The equations of state for both phases of MgSiO$_3$ agree well with experiments, and better than those from generalized g…
A mean field approximation of a model for double perovskites that takes into account the coupling between itinerant electron spins and localized spins is developed. As in previously reported theoretical results, and contrary to experimental observation, the critical temperature is suppressed for large electron density. An effective Heisenberg model reveals the cause of this discrepancy: the competition between degenerate antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic channels. This degeneracy can be broken by the inclusion of a Hubbard-type U term. It is therefore suggested that electron correlation effe…
Lead-halide perovskites have demonstrated astonishing increases in power conversion efficiency in photovoltaics over the last decade. The most efficient perovskite devices now outperform industry-standard multi-crystalline silicon solar cells, despite the fact that perovskites are typically grown at low temperature using simple solution-based methods. However, the toxicity of lead and its ready solubility in water are concerns for widespread implementation. These challenges, alongside the many successes of the perovskites, have motivated significant efforts across multiple disciplines to find …
Two-dimensional halide perovskite nanoplatelets (NPLs) have exceptional light-emitting properties, including wide spectral tunability, ultrafast radiative decays, high quantum yields (QY), and oriented emission. To realize efficient devices, it is imperative to understand how exciton transport progresses in NPL thin films. Due to the high binding energies of electron-hole pairs, excitons are generally considered the dominant species responsible for carrier transfer. We employ spatially and temporally resolved optical microscopy to map exciton diffusion in perovskite nanocrystal (NC) thin films…
Hexagonal oxide perovskites, in contrast to the more familiar perovskites, allow for face-sharing of metal-oxygen octahedra or trigonal prisms within their structural frameworks. This results in dimers, trimers, tetramers, or longer fragments of chains of face-sharing octahedra in the crystal structures, and consequently in much shorter metal-metal distances and lower metal-oxygen-metal bond angles than are seen in the more familiar perovskites. The presence of the face-sharing octahedra can have a dramatic impact on magnetic properties of these compounds, and dimer-based materials, in particu…
Halide perovskites have recently gained widespread attention for their exceptional optoelectronic properties which have been illuminated by extensive spectroscopic investigations. In this article, nanophotonic surface-engineering using soft-lithography has been used to reproduce nanostructures with enhanced functionalities. A non-invasive optical technique based on Raman and photolumines-cence (PL) spectroscopy is employed to investigate the interactive effect of the thermal and optical behaviour in surface-patterned hybrid organic-inorganic halide perovskite thin films. The thermophys-ical pr…
Double perovskite-based magnets wherein frustration and competition between emergent degrees of freedom are at play can lead to novel electronic and magnetic phenomena. Herein, we report the electronic structure and magnetic properties of an ordered double perovskite material Ho2CoMnO6. In the double perovskite with general class A2BB'O6, the octahedral B and B'-site has a distinct crystallographic site. The Rietveld refinement of XRD data reveals that Ho2CoMnO6 crystallizes in the monoclinic P21/n space group. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the charge state of cations present i…
First principles linear response calculations are used to investigate the lattice dynamics of what is thought to be the third most abundant phase in the lower mantle, CaSiO_3 perovskite. The commonly assumed cubic structure (Pm3m) is found to be dynamically unstable at all pressures, exhibiting unstable modes along the Brillouin zone edge from the M-point to the R-point. Based on these results, we predict that the ground state structure of CaSiO_3 perovskite is a distorted phase with lower than cubic symmetry. We predict that a phase transition occurs in CaSiO_3 perovskite within the earth's l…
As they combine decent mobilities with extremely long carrier lifetimes, organic-inorganic perovskites have opened a whole new field in opto\-electronics. Measurements of their underlying electronic structure, however, are still lacking. Using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we measure the valence band dispersion of single-crystal CH$_3$NH$_3$PbBr$_3$. The dispersion of the highest energy band is extracted applying a modified leading edge method, which accounts for the particular density of states of organic-inorganic perovskites. The surface Brillouin zone is consistent with bulk-t…
In insulating materials with ordered magnetic spiral phases, ferroelectricity can emerge due to the breaking of inversion symmetry. This property is of both fundamental and practical interest, in particular with a view to exploiting it in low-power electronic devices. Advances towards technological applications have been hindered, however, by the relatively low ordering temperatures $T_\mathrm{spiral}$ of most magnetic spiral phases, which rarely exceed 100 K. We have recently established that the ordering temperature of a magnetic spiral can be increased up to 310 K by the introduction of che…
Lead halide perovskites are a remarkable class of materials that have emerged over the past decade as being suitable for application in a broad range of devices, such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, lasers, transistors, and memory devices, among others. While they are often solution-processed semiconductors deposited at low temperatures, perovskites exhibit properties one would only expect from highly pure inorganic crystals that are grown at high temperatures. This unique phenomenon has resulted in fast-paced progress toward record device performance; unfortunately, the basic science b…
