In this article, we establish the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture over valuation rings: for a reductive group scheme $G$ over a valuation ring $V$ with fraction field $K$, a $G$-torsor over $V$ is trivial if it is trivial over $K$. This result is predicted by the original Grothendieck-Serre conjecture and the resolution of singularities. The novelty of our proof lies in overcoming subtleties brought by general nondiscrete valuation rings. By using flasque resolutions and inducting with local cohomology, we prove a non-Noetherian counterpart of Colliot-Thélène-Sansuc's case of tori. Then, taking advantage of techniques in algebraization, we obtain the passage to the Henselian rank one case. Finally, we induct on Levi subgroups and use the integrality of rational points of anisotropic groups to reduce to the semisimple anisotropic case, in which we appeal to properties of parahoric subgroups in Bruhat-Tits theory to conclude. In the last section, by using properties of reflexive sheaves, we also prove a variant of Nisnevich's purity conjecture.
We prove here some supplementary statements that appeared without proof in I. Panin, A. Stavrova, N. Vavilov, On Grothendieck--Serre's conjecture concerning principal $G$-bundles over reductive group schemes:I, arXiv:0905.1418

The Grothendieck--Serre conjecture predicts that every generically trivial torsor under a reductive group scheme $G$ over a regular local ring $R$ is trivial. The mixed characteristic case of the conjecture is widely open. We consider the following setup. Let $A$ be a mixed characteristic DVR, $G$ a reductive group scheme over $A$, $X$ an irreducible smooth projective $A$-scheme, $\mathcal G$ a principal $G$-bundle over $X$. Suppose $\mathcal G$ is generically trivial. We prove that in this case $\mathcal G$ is Zariski locally trivial. This result confirms the conjecture.

For a reductive group scheme $G$ over a semilocal Dedekind ring $R$ with total ring of fractions $K$, we prove that no nontrivial $G$-torsor trivializes over $K$. This generalizes a result of Nisnevich-Tits, who settled the case when $R$ is local. Their result, in turn, is a special case of a conjecture of Grothendieck-Serre that predicts the same over any regular local ring. With a patching technique and weak approximation in the style of Harder, we reduce to the case when $R$ is a complete discrete valuation ring. Afterwards, we consider Levi subgroups to reduce to the case when $G$ is semis…

Let R be a regular local ring, containing an infinite field. Let G be a reductive group scheme over R. We prove that a principal G-bundle over R is trivial, if it is trivial over the fraction field of R.
Let R be a semi-local Dedekind domain and let K be the field of fractions of R. Let G be a reductive semisimple simply connected R-group scheme such that every semisimple normal R-subgroup scheme of G contains a split R-torus G_m. We prove that the kernel of the map H^1_et(R,G)-> H^1_et(K,G) induced by the inclusion of R into K, is trivial. This result partially extends a theorem of Nisnevich.
Let R be a regular local ring, containing a finite field. Let G be a reductive group scheme over R. We prove that a principal G-bundle over R is trivial, if it is trivial over the fraction field of R. In other words, if K is the fraction field of R, then the map of pointed sets H^1_{et}(R,G) \to H^1_{et}(K,G), induced by the inclusion of R into K, has a trivial kernel. Certain arguments used in the present preprint do not work if the ring R contains a characteristic zero field. In that case and, more generally, in the case when the regular local ring R contains an infinite field this result is…
We prove the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture for quasi-split reductive groups schemes. Our method involves reducing to the Borel subgroup in order to conclude the result from purity for tori and the structure theorem for unipotent radicals of parabolic subgroups in a reductive group.
The Grothendieck monoid of an exact category is a monoid version of the Grothendieck group. We use it to classify Serre subcategories of an exact category and to reconstruct the topology of a noetherian scheme. We first construct bijections between (i) the set of Serre subcategories of an exact category, (ii) the set of faces of its Grothendieck monoid, and (iii) the monoid spectrum of its Grothendieck monoid. By using (ii), we classify Serre subcategories of exact categories related to a finite dimensional algebra and a smooth projective curve. In particular, we determine the Grothendieck mon…
Let $U$ be a regular connected affine semi-local scheme over a field $k$. Let $G$ be a reductive group scheme over $U$. Assuming that $G$ has an appropriate parabolic subgroup scheme, we prove the following statement. Given an affine $k$-scheme $W$, a principal $G$-bundle over $W\times_kU$ is trivial if it is trivial over the generic fiber of the projection $W\times_kU\to U$. We also simplify the proof of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture: let $U$ be a regular connected affine semi-local scheme over a field $k$. Let $G$ be a reductive group scheme over $U$. A principal $G$-bundle over $U$ is t…
Let $k$ be a base field and $G$ be an algebraic group over $k$. J.-P. Serre defined $G$ to be special if every $G$-torsor $T \to X$ is locally trivial in the Zariski topology for every reduced algebraic variety $X$ defined over $k$. In recent papers an a priori weaker condition is used: $G$ is called special if every $G$-torsor $T \to Spec(K)$ is split for every field $K$ containing $k$. We show that these two definitions are equivalent. We also generalize this fact and propose a strengthened version of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture based on the notion of essential dimension.
Let R be a semi-local regular ring containing an infinite perfect field, and let K be the field of fractions of R. Let H be a simple algebraic group of type F_4 over R such that H_K is the automorphism group of a 27-dimensional Jordan algebra which is a first Tits construction. If char K is not 2, this means precisely that the f_3 invariant of H_K is trivial. We prove that if an H-torsor is rationally trivial, then it is trivial over R. This result is a particular case of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture. It continues the recent series of papers by I. Panin, N.Vavilov and the authors, and com…
Let k be an infinite field. Let R be the semi-local ring of a finite family of closed points on a k-smooth affine irreducible variety, let K be the fraction field of R, and let G be a reductive simple simply connected R-group scheme isotropic over R. We prove that for any Noetherian k-algebra A, the map of etale cohomology sets H^1(A\otimes_k R,G)-> H^1(A\otimes_ k K,G), induced by the inclusion of R into K, has trivial kernel. This implies the Serre-Grothendieck conjecture for such groups G. The main theorem for A=k and some other results of the present paper are used significantly in arXiv:1…
Let R be a regular local ring. Let G be a reductive R-group scheme. A conjecture of Grothendieck and Serre predicts that a principal G-bundle over R is trivial if it is trivial over the quotient field of R. The conjecture is known when R contains a field. We prove the conjecture for a large class of regular local rings not containing fields in the case when G is split.
The Grothendieck--Serre conjecture predicts that every generically trivial torsor under a reductive group scheme $G$ over a regular local ring $R$ is trivial. We settle it in the case when $G$ is quasi-split and $R$ is unramified. Some of the techniques that allow us to overcome obstacles that have so far kept the mixed characteristic case out of reach include a version of Noether normalization over discrete valuation rings, as well as a suitable presentation lemma for smooth relative curves in mixed characteristic that facilitates passage to the relative affine line via excision and patching.
We prove some new cases of the Grothendieck-Serre conjecture for classical groups. This is based on a new construction of the Gersten-Witt complex for Witt groups of Azumaya algebras with involution on regular semilocal rings, with explicit second residue maps; the complex is shown to be exact when the ring is of dimension $\le 2$ (or $\le 4$, with additional hypotheses on the algebra with involution). Note that we do not assume that the ring contains a field.
We explain intersection multiplicity defined by J. P. Serre, in terms of the Poincare product in Hodge theory by a modification of the chern character map. We also discuss a formulation of the Euler characteristic via the action of correspondences on the Chow groups of projective varieties, assuming the Grothendieck Standard conjectures over $Q_l$.
Assume that R is a semi-local regular ring containing an infinite perfect field, or that R is a semi-local ring of several points on a smooth scheme over an infinite field. Let K be the field of fractions of R. Let H be a strongly inner adjoint simple algebraic group of type E_6 or E_7 over R, or any twisted form of one of the split groups of classical type O^+_{n,R}, n>=4; PGO_{n,R}, n>=4; PSp_{2n,R}, n>=2; PGL_{n,R}, n>=2. We prove that the kernel of the map H^1_{et}(R,H)-> H^1_{et}(K,H) induced by the inclusion of R into K is trivial. This continues the recent series of papers by the author…
We formulate and prove Serre's equivalence for $\mathbb{Z}$-graded rings. When restricted to the usual case of $\mathbb{N}$-graded rings, our version of Serre's equivalence also sharpens the usual one by replacing the condition that $A$ be generated by $A_1$ over $A_0$ by a more natural condition, which we call the Cartier condition. For $\mathbb{Z}$-graded rings coming from flips and flops, this Cartier condition relates more naturally to the geometry of the flip/flop in question. We also interpret Grothendieck duality as an instance of Greenlees-May duality for graded rings. These form the b…
A proof of Grothendieck--Serre conjecture on principal bundles over a semi-local regular ring containing an infinite field is given in [FP] recently. That proof is based significantly on Theorem 1.0.1 stated below in the Introduction and proven in the present preprint. Theorem 1.0.1 itself is a consequence of two purity theorems (Theorems A and 10.0.30) proven below in the present preprint. The geometric part of a new preprint [PSV] and the main result of an article [C-T-S] are used significantly in proofs of those two purity theorems. One of that purity result looks as follows. Let O be a sem…
Let A be an abelian hereditary category with Serre duality. We provide a classification of such categories up to derived equivalence under the additional condition that the Grothendieck group modulo the radical of the Euler form is a free abelian group of finite rank. Such categories are called numerically finite, and this condition is satisfied by the category of coherent sheaves on a smooth projective variety.
We introduce the notion that two elements of Grothendieck groups of constructible sheaves on a separated scheme over an excellent henselian discrete valuation ring have the same wild ramification. We prove that this condition is preserved by four of Grothendieck's six operations except the derived tensor product and the derived hom.
For a left coherent ring A with every left ideal having a countable set of generators, we show that the coderived category of left A-modules is compactly generated by the bounded derived category of finitely presented left A-modules (reproducing a particular case of a recent result of Stovicek with our methods). Furthermore, we present the definition of a dualizing complex of fp-injective modules over a pair of noncommutative coherent rings A and B, and construct an equivalence between the coderived category of A-modules and the contraderived category of B-modules. Finally, we define the notio…
The goal of this series of papers is to give a new non-commutative approach to problems about the density of reductions such as the conjecture of Joshi-Rajan, and the generalization of the conjecture of Serre. In this paper, we prove integral Grothendieck Riemann-Roch which was proved by Papas in the case ch$(k)=0$. As a corollary we prove an integral analogue of Kontsevich's comparison theorem, and we show that if a smooth projective variety $X$ has a full exceptional collection then there is an explicit formula of the motive of $X$ up to bounded torsion.
In a series of papers [Pan0], [Pan1], [Pan2], [Pan3] we give a detailed and better structured proof of the Grothendieck--Serre's conjecture for semi-local regular rings containing a finite field. The outline of the proof is the same as in [P1], [P2], [P3]. If the semi-local regular ring contains an infinite field, then the conjecture is proved in [FP]. Thus the conjecture is true for regular local rings containing a field. The present paper is the one [Pan0] in that series. Theorem 1.2 is one of the main result of the paper. The proof of the latter theorem is completely geometric. It is based …
We establish a valuative version of Grothendieck's section conjecture for curves over p-adic local fields. The image of every section is contained in the decomposition subgroup of a valuation which prolongs the p-adic valuation to the function field of the curve.
Given an elliptic fibration $f \colon X \to S$ over the spectrum of a complete discrete valuation ring with algebraically closed residue field, we use a Hochschild--Serre spectral sequence to express the torsion in $R^1f_\ast \mathscr{O}_X$ as the first group cohomology $H^1(G,H^0(S^\prime, \mathscr{O}_{S^\prime}))$. Here, $G$ is the Galois group of the maximal extension $K^\prime / K$ such that the normalization of $X \times_S S^\prime$ induces an étale covering of $X$, where $S^\prime$ is the normalization of $S$ in $K^\prime$. The case where $S$ is a Dedekind scheme is easily reduced to the…
Given an Azumaya algebra with involution $(A,σ)$ over a commutative ring $R$ and some auxiliary data, we construct an $8$-periodic chain complex involving the Witt groups of $(A,σ)$ and other algebras with involution, and prove it is exact when $R$ is semilocal. When $R$ is a field, this recovers an $8$-periodic exact sequence of Witt groups of Grenier-Boley and Mahmoudi, which in turn generalizes exact sequences of Parimala--Sridharan--Suresh and Lewis. We apply this result in several ways: We establish the Grothendieck--Serre conjecture on principal homogeneous bundles and the local purity c…
