The lattice dynamics of Cu3Au, Ni70Pt30, Pd90Fe10, and Pd96Fe04 intermetallic is studied using the DFT calculations. We calculated the phonon dispersions and phonon densities of states along two high symmetry paths of the Brillouin zone by Weighted Dynamical Matrix (WDM) approach. We also compared the results with the supercell approach and inelastic neutron scattering. Furthermore, we calculated the impact of mass and force-constant fluctuations on the Cu3Au and made a comparison with both WDM and supercell approaches results. The averaged first Nearest Neighbor (1NN) force constants between various pairs of atoms in these intermetallic structures are obtained from the WDM approach.
A series of first principles calculations have been carried out in order to discuss electronic structure, phonon dynamics, structural instabilities and the nature of martensitic transformations of the Heusler alloys Ni$_2$Mn(Ga, Ge, Al) and Co$_2$Mn(Ga, Ge). The calculations show that besides electronic pecularities like Fermi--surface nesting, hybridizing optical and acoustic phonon modes are important for the stabilization of the modulated martensitic structures.
Two-dimensional (2-D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have shown numerous interesting physical and chemical properties, making them promising materials for electronic, optoelectronic, and energy applications. Tuning thermal conductivity of two-dimensional (2-D) materials could expand their applicability in many of these fields. In this paper, we propose a strategy of using alloying and nanodomains to suppress the thermal conductivity of 2-D materials. To predict the thermal conductivity of 2-D alloy embedded with nanodomains, we employ the Green's function approach to assess the phonon…
We study the bulk and surface phonon-polaritons of the Zn0.67Be0.33Se zincblende alloy by near-forward Raman scattering. The short (Be-Se) bond exhibits a distinct percolation doublet in the conventional backscattering Raman spectra, corresponding to a three-mode behavior in total [1(Zn-Se),2(Be-Se)] for Zn0.67Be0.33Se. This offers an opportunity to achieve a refined understanding of the phonon-polariton modes of a zincblende alloy beyond the current two-mode approximation, corresponding to a [1(Zn-Se),1(Be-Se)] description in the present case. The discussion is supported by contour modeling o…
We investigate by near-forward Raman scattering a presumed reinforcement of the (A-C,B-C)-mixed phonon-polariton of a A1-xBxC zincblende alloy when entering its longitudinal optical (LO-)regime near the Brillouin zone centre Γ, as predicted within the formalism of the linear dielectric response. A choice system to address such issue is ZnSe0.68S0.32 due to the moderate dispersion of its refractive index in the visible range, a sine qua non condition to bring the phonon-polariton insight near Γ. The LO-regime is actually accessed by using the 633.0 nm laser excitation, testified by the strong e…
Using a first-principles cluster expansion, we shed light on the solid-state phase diagram and structure of the recently discovered high-performance thermoelectrics, Pb-Ag-Sb-Te alloys. The observed nanoscale inhomogeneities are shown to be coherent precipitates of ordered (Ag)m(Sb)n(Te)m+n phases, such as AgSbTe2, all immiscible with rocksalt PbTe. The solubility is high for PbTe in AgSbTe2 and low for (Ag,Sb)Te in PbTe (8% vs. 0.6% at 850 K). The differences in the phonon spectra of PbTe and AgSbTe2 confirm that the inhomogeneities enhance the thermoelectric performance.
The evolution of the optical phonons in layered semiconductor alloys SnSe1-xSx is studied as a function of the composition by using polarized Raman spectroscopy with six different excitation wavelengths (784.8, 632.8, 532, 514.5, 488, and 441.6 nm). The polarization dependences of the phonon modes are compared with transmission electron diffraction measurements to determine the crystallographic orientation of the samples. Some of the Raman modes show significant variation in their polarization behavior depending on the excitation wavelengths. It is established that the maximum intensity direct…
We present here an augmented space recursive technique in the k-representation which include diagonal, off-diagonal and the environmental disorder explicitly : an analytic, translationally invariant, multiple scattering theory for phonons in random binary alloys. We propose the augmented space recursion (ASR) as a computationally fast and accurate technique which will incorporate configuration fluctuations over a large local environment. We apply the formalism to $Ni_{55}Pd_{45}$, $Ni_{88}Cr_12}$ and $Ni_{50}Pt_{50}$ alloys which is not a random choice. Numerical results on spectral functions, …
Inelastic and elastic neutron scattering have been used to study a single crystal of the Ni$_{54}$Mn$_{23}$Al$_{23}$ Heusler alloy over a broad temperature range. The paper reports the first experimental determination of the low-lying phonon dispersion curves for this alloy system. We find that the frequencies of the TA$_2$ modes are relatively low. This branch exhibits an anomaly (dip) at a wave number $ξ_{0} ={1/3}\approx 0.33$, which softens with decreasing temperature. Associated with this anomalous dip at $ξ_{0}$, an elastic central peak scattering is also present. We have also observed s…
Ti50 Pd50-xCrx is a high temperature shape memory alloy with a martensitic transformation temperature strongly dependent on the Cr composition. Prior to the transformation a premartensitic phase is present with an incommensurate modulated cubic lattice with wave vector of q0=(0.22, 0.22, 0). The temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering in the cubic phase is measured as a function temperature for x=6.5, 8.5, and 10 at. %. The lattice dynamics has been studied and reveals anomalous temperature and q-dependence of the [110]-TA2 transverse phonon branch. The phonon linewidth is broad over …
The major obstacle in the design of materials with low lattice thermal conductivity is the difficulty in efficiently scattering phonons across the entire frequency spectrum. Using first principles calculations, we show that driving PbTe materials to the brink of the ferroelectric phase transition could be a powerful strategy to solve this problem. We illustrate this concept by applying tensile [001] strain to PbTe and its alloys with another rock-salt IV-VI material, PbSe; and by alloying PbTe with a rhombohedral IV-VI material, GeTe. This induces extremely soft optical modes at the zone cente…
We present the itinerant coherent-potential approximation(ICPA), an analytic, translationally invariant and tractable form of augmented-space-based, multiple-scattering theory in a single-site approximation for harmonic phonons in realistic random binary alloys with mass and force-constant disorder. We provide expressions for quantities needed for comparison with experimental structure factors such as partial and average spectral functions and derive the sum rules associated with them. Numerical results are presented for Ni_{55} Pd_{45} and Ni_{50} Pt_{50} alloys which serve as test cases, the…
Using a combination of density-functional perturbation theory and the itinerant coherent potential approximation, we study the effects of atomic relaxation on the inelastic incoherent neutron scattering cross sections of disordered Ni$_{50}$Pt$_{50}$ alloys. We build on previous work, where empirical force constants were adjusted {\it ad hoc} to agree with experiment. After first relaxing all structural parameters within the local-density approximation for ordered NiPt compounds, density-functional perturbation theory is then used to compute phonon spectra, densities of states, and the force c…
Recent investigations have advanced the understanding of how structure-property relationships in ferromagnetic metal alloys affect the magnetization dynamics on nanosecond time-scales. A similar understanding for magnetization dynamics on femto- to pico-second time-scales does not yet exist. To address this, we perform time-resolved magneto optic Kerr effect (TRMOKE) measurements of magnetization dynamics in Co-Fe alloys on femto- to nano-second regimes. We show that Co-Fe compositions that exhibit low Gilbert damping parameters also feature prolonged ultrafast demagnetization upon photoexcita…
Half Heusler (HH) alloys with 18 valence electron count have attracted significant interest in the area of research related to thermoelectrics. Understanding the novel transport properties exhibited by these systems with semiconducting ground state is an important focus area in this field. Large thermal conductivity shown by most of the HH alloy possesses a major hurdle in improving the figure of merit (ZT). Additionally, understanding the mechanism of thermal conduction in heavy constituents HH alloys is an interesting aspect. Here, we have investigated the high temperature thermoelectric pro…
In this paper we report phonon dynamics in chemically synthesized Zn1- xMgxO (0\leqx\leq0.07) and Zn1-yCdyO (0\leqy\leq0.03) alloy nanostructures of sizes ~10 nm using non-resonant Raman and Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Substitution by Mg makes the unit cell compact while Cd substitution leads to unit cell expansion. On alloying, both A1(LO) and E1(LO) mode of wurtzite ZnO show blue shift for Zn1-xMgxO and red shift for Zn1-yCdyO alloy nanostructures due to mass defect and volume change induced by the impurity atoms. Significant shift has been observed in E1(LO) mode for Z…
The lattice dynamics of AgPd, Ni55Pd45, Ni95Pt05, and Cu0.715Pd0.285 intermetallic have been investigated using the DFT calculation. The phonon dispersions and phonon densities of states along for two symmetry directions are calculated by Weighted Dynamical Matrix (WDM) and compared with virtual crystal approximation (VCA), supercell approach, and inelastic neutron scattering experimental results. The impact of mass, force-constant fluctuation, and Ag concentration on lattice dynamics of AgPd are discussed, and a comparison between WDM and Supercell approach is performed. The averaged first Ne…
In the warm dense regime, where the electron temperature is increased to the same order of the Fermi temperature, the dynamical stability of elemental metals depends on its electronic band structure as well as its crystal structure. It has been known that phonon hardening occurs due to an enhanced internal pressure caused by electron excitations as in close-packed simple metals, whereas phonon softening occurs at a specific point in the Brillouin zone as in body-centered cubic metals. Here, we investigate the dynamical stability of binary ordered alloys (Au and Cu) in the L1$_0$ and L1$_2$ str…
A first principles density functional based linear response theory (the so called Density Functional Perturbation theory \cite{dfpt}) has been combined separately with two recently developed formalism for a systematic study of the lattice dynamics in disordered binary alloys. The two formalisms are the Augmented space recursion (ASR) and the Itinerant coherent potential approximation (ICPA). The two different theories (DFPT-ASR and DFPT-ICPA) systematically provides a hierarchy of improvements upon the earlier single site based theories (like CPA etc.) and includes non-local correlations in th…

We report on the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of the Ga$_{1-x}$In$_x$N alloy using virtual crystal approximation (VCA) from first-principles. A band gap bowing parameter of 3.85 eV is obtained with the TB09 functional. Phonon density of states shifts to lower frequency as the In content is increased. However, VCA ignores disorder effect and is therefore unable to describe the broadening of the phonon spectra upon alloying. The role of electron-phonon interaction in the temperature dependence of the band gap is also studied for GaN, InN and their alloy Ga$_{1-x}$In$_x$N. Th…
First-principles calculations are used in order to investigate phonon anomalies in non-magnetic and magnetic Heusler alloys. Phonon dispersions for several systems in their cubic L2$\mathrm{_1}$ structure were obtained along the [110] direction. We consider compounds which exhibit phonon instabilities and compare them with their stable counterparts. The analysis of the electronic structure allows us to identify the characteristic features leading to structural instabilities. The phonon dispersions of the unstable compounds show that, while the acoustic modes tend to soften, the optical modes d…
The pressure-induced phase transition, elasticity behavior, thermodynamic properties, and $P\mathtt{-}T$ phase diagram of $α$, $ω$, and $β$ equiatomic HfTi alloy are investigated using first-principles density-functional theory (DFT). The simulated pressure-induced phase transition of the alloy follows the sequence of $α\mathtt{\rightarrow}ω\mathtt{\rightarrow}β$, in agreement with the experimental results of Hf and Ti metals. Our calculated elastic constants show that the $α$ and $ω$ phases are mechanically stable at ambient pressure, while the $β$ phase is unstable, where a critical pressure…
Nb-Ru is a high temperature shape memory alloy that undergoes a Martensitic transformation from a parent cubic b-phase into a tetragonal b' phase at TM 900 C. Measurements of the phonon dispersion curves show that the [110]-TA2 phonon branch, corresponding in the q=0 limit to the elastic constant C'=1/2(C11-C12) has an anomalous temperature dependence. Nearly the entire branch softens with decreasing temperature as TM is approached. The temperature dependence of the low-q phonon energies suggests that the elastic constants would approach 0 as T approaches TM, indicating a second order transiti…
The phonon mode parameters and anisotropic mid-infrared dielectric function tensor components of high- Al-content Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N alloys in dependence of the Al content $x$ are precisely determined from mid-infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements for a set of high-quality Si-doped Al$_x$Ga$_{1-x}$N epitaxial layers on 4H-SiC substrates. Two-mode behavior of the $E_1$(TO) modes and one-mode behavior of the $A_1$(LO) mode are found in agreement with previous Raman scattering spectroscopy reports. The composition dependencies of the IR active phonon frequency parameters are established…
Nanostructured semiconducting alloys obtain ultra-low thermal conductivity as a result of the scattering of phonons with a wide range of mean-free-paths (MFPs). In these materials, long-MFP phonons are scattered at the nanoscale boundaries whereas short-MFP high-frequency phonons are impeded by disordered point defects introduced by alloying. While this trend has been validated by simplified analytical and numerical methods, an ab-initio space-resolved approach remains elusive. To fill this gap, we calculate the thermal conductivity reduction in porous alloys by solving the mode-resolved Boltz…
The time-resolved reflectivity measurements were carried out on the interfacial phase change memory (iPCM) materials ([(GeTe)$_{2}$(Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$)$_{4}$]$_{8}$ and [(GeTe)$_{2}$(Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$)$_{1}$]$_{20}$) as well as conventional Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ alloy at room temperature and above the RESET-SET phase transition temperature. In the high-temperature phase, coherent phonons were clearly observed in the iPCM samples while drastic attenuation of coherent phonons was induced in the alloy. This difference strongly suggests the atomic rearrangement during the phase transition in iPCMs…
We report a theoretical study of the carrier relaxation in a quantum cascade laser (QCL) subjected to a strong magnetic field. Both the alloy (GaInAs) disorder effects and the Frohlich interaction are taken into account when the electron energy differences are tuned to the longitudinal optical (LO) phonon energy. In the weak electron-phonon coupling regime, a Fermi's golden rule computation of LO phonon scattering rates shows a very fast non-radiative relaxation channel for the alloy broadened Landau levels (LL's). In the strong electron-phonon coupling regime, we use a magneto-polaron formali…
We have investigated the effect of mass contrast on alloy phonon scattering in mass-substituted Lennard-Jones crystals. By calculating the mass-difference phonon scattering rate using a modal analysis method based on molecular dynamics, we have identified the applicability and limits of the widely-used mass-difference perturbation model in terms of magnitude and sign of the mass difference. The result of a phonon -mode-dependent analysis reveals that the critical phonon frequency, above which the mass-difference perturbation theory fails, decreases with the magnitude of the mass difference ind…
We investigate the evolution of the cross-plane thermal conductivity $κ$ of superlattices (SLs) as interfaces change from perfectly abrupt to totally intermixed, by using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations in combination with the spectral heat current calculations. We highlight the role of surface-interdiffusion-driven intermixing by calculating the $κ$ of SLs with changing interface roughness, whose tuning allows for the $κ$ values much lower than the "alloy limit" and the abrupt interface limit in same cases. The interplay between alloy and interface scattering in different frequ…
The lattice dynamics in substitutional disordered alloys with constituents having large size differences is driven by strong disorder in masses, inter-atomic force constants and local environments. In this letter, a new first-principles approach based on special quasi random structures and itinerant coherent potential approximation to compute the phonon spectra of such alloys is proposed and applied to Ni$_{0.5}$Pt$_{0.5}$ alloy. The agreement between our results with the experiments is found to be much better than for previous models of disorder due to an accurate treatment of the interplay o…
Contrary to a broadly accepted assumption we show that random (Ga,In)P is not an exception with respect to the crude classification of the phonon mode behavior of random mixed crystals in terms of 1-bond->1-mode systems or 2-bond->1-mode systems, as established from the simple criterion derived by Elliott et al. [Rev.Mod.Phys. 46, 465 (1974)]. Consistent understanding of the puzzling Raman/infrared behavior of (Ga,In)P, that has been a subject of controversy, is achieved via a basic version of our 1-bond->2-mode model. The Raman/infrared features from (Ga,In)P are accordingly re-assigned, with…
Lowest-order quantum perturbation theory (Fermi's golden rule) for phonon-disorder scattering has been used to predict thermal conductivities in several semiconducting alloys with surprising success given its underlying hypothesis of weak and dilute disorder. In this paper, we explain how this is possible by focusing on the case of maximally mass-disordered Mg$_2$Si$_{1-x}$Sn$_x$. We use a Chebyshev polynomials Green's function method that allows a full treatment of disorder on very large systems (tens of millions of atoms) to probe individual phonon linewidths and frequency-resolved thermal t…
High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are exceptional candidates for radiation-resistant materials due to their complex local chemical environment and slow defect migration. Despite commonly overlooked, electronic effects on defects evolution in radiation environments also play a crucial role by dissipating excess energy through electron-phonon coupling and electronic heat conduction during cascade events. We present a systematic study on electronic properties in random-solid solutions (RSS) in four and five principal elements HEAs and their effect on defect formation, clustering, and recombination. Elec…
Raman light scattering, low-temperature photoluminescence, light-scattering tomography, and hydrogenation were used to investigate optical properties of defects in strain-relaxed Si_{1-x}Ge_x (0.05 \le x \le 0.50) alloys. The photoluminescence emission was characterized by typical zero-phonon, phonon-assisted, and dislocations-related emissions, which are dependent on Ge composition x. However, luminescence spectra exhibited above band-gap features, which are likely associated with the presence of Si-rich regions in the alloys. The results are correlated with light-scattering tomography, revea…
Phonon properties of $\mathrm{Mo_3Sb_{7-x}Te_x}$ ($x=0,1.5, 1.7$), a potential high-temperature thermoelectric material, have been studied with inelastic neutron and x-ray scattering, and with first-principles simulations. The substitution of Te for Sb leads to pronounced changes in the electronic structure, local bonding, phonon density of states (DOS), dispersions, and phonon lifetimes. Alloying with tellurium shifts the Fermi level upward, near the top of the valence band, resulting in a strong suppression of electron-phonon screening, and a large overall stiffening of interatomic force-con…
The alloys with 8/18/24 valence electron count (VEC) are promising candidates for efficient energy conversion and refrigeration applications at low as well as high temperatures. The full potential linearized augmented plane wave method as implemented in WIEN2k code was used to investigate electronic structure and TE transport properties with the PBE$-$GGA and TB$-$mBJ exchange potentials and Boltzmann transport theory. The calculated single crystal elastic constants, phonon dispersion and phonon density of states confirm that these systems are mechanically and dynamically stable. The TE transp…
Au-Fe alloys are of immense interest due to their biocompatibility, anomalous hall conductivity, and applications in various medical treatment. However, irrespective of the method of preparation, they often exhibit a high-level of disorder, with properties sensitive to the thermal or magnetic annealing temperatures. We calculate lattice dynamical properties of Au$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$ alloys using density functional theory methods, where, being a multisite property, reliable interatomic force constant (IFC) calculations in disordered alloys remain a challenge. We follow a two fold approach: (1) an acc…
We demonstrate how to overcome serious problems in understanding and classification of vibration spectra in semiconductor alloys, following from traditional use of the virtual crystal approximation (VCA). We show that such different systems as InGaAs (1-bond->1-mode behavior), InGaP (modified 2-mode) and ZnTeSe (2-bond->1-mode) obey in fact the same phonon mode behavior - hence probably a universal one - of a percolation-type (1-bond->2-mode). The change of paradigm from the `VCA insight' (an averaged microscopic one) to the `percolation insight' (a mesoscopic one) offers a promising link towa…
We report a detailed first-principles study of the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of the superconducting C$_{32}$ phase of the ternary alloy CaAl$_{2-x}$Si$_x$, both in the experimental range $0.6 \leq x \leq 1.2$, for which the alloy has been synthesised, and in the theoretical limits of high aluminium and high silicon concentration. Our results indicate that, in the experimental range, the dependence of the electronic bands on composition is well described by a rigid-band model, which breaks down outside this range. Such a breakdown, in the (theoretical) limit of high alum…

Aluminum scandium nitride alloy (Al1-xScxN) is regarded as a promising material for high-performance acoustic devices used in wireless communication systems. Phonon scattering and heat conduction processes govern the energy dissipation in acoustic resonators, ultimately determining their performance quality. This work reports, for the first time, on phonon scattering processes and thermal conductivity in Al1-xScxN alloys with the Sc content (x) up to 0.26. The thermal conductivity measured presents a descending trend with increasing x. Temperature-dependent measurements show an increase in the…
We investigate ultrafast phonon dynamics in the Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_{x}$ alloy system for various compositions $x$ using a reflective femtosecond pump-probe technique. The coherent optical phonons corresponding to the A$_{1g}$ local vibrational modes of Bi-Bi, Bi-Sb, and Sb-Sb are generated and observed in the time domain with a few picoseconds dephasing time. The frequencies of the coherent optical phonons were found to change as the Sb composition $x$ was varied, and more importantly, the relaxation time of those phonon modes was dramatically reduced for $x$ values in the range 0.5--0.8. We argue …
Magnetocaloric (MC) materials present an avenue for chemical-free, solid state refrigeration through cooling via adiabatic demagnetization. We have used inelastic neutron scattering to measure the lattice dynamics in the MC material Ni45Co5Mn36.6In13.4. Upon heating across the Curie Temperature (TC), the material exhibits an anomalous increase in phonon entropy of 0.22 +/- 0.04 kB/atom, which is ten times larger than expected from conventional thermal expansion. This transition is accompanied by an abrupt softening of the transverse optic phonon. We present first-principle calculations showing…
Neutron scattering and ultrasonic methods have been used to study the lattice dynamics of two single crystals of Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloys close to Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{34}$In$_{16}$ magnetic superelastic composition. The paper reports the experimental determination of the low-lying phonon dispersion curves and the elastic constants for this alloy system. We found that the frequencies of the TA$_{2}$ branch are relatively low and it exhibits a small dip anomaly at a wave number $ξ_{0} \approx 1/3$, which softens with decreasing temperature. Associated with the softening of this phonon, we also observed…
Whilst it has long been known that disorder profoundly affects transport properties, recent measurements on a series of solid solution 3d-transition metal alloys reveal two orders of magnitude variations in the residual resistivity. Using ab-initio methods, we demonstrate that, while the carrier density of all alloys is as high as in normal metals, the electron mean-free-path can vary from ~10 Å (strong scattering limit) to ~10$^3$ Å (weak scattering limit). Here, we delineate the underlying electron scattering mechanisms responsible for this disparate behavior. While spin dependent site-diago…
An amorphous Ti50Ni25Cu25 alloy was produced by 19 h of mechanical alloying. Anomalous wide angle x-ray scattering data were collected at six energies and six total scattering factors were obtained. By considering the data collected at two energies close to the Ni and Cu K edges, two differential anomalous scattering factors around the Ni and Cu atoms were obtained, showing the chemical environments around these atoms are different. The eight factors were used as input data to the reverse Monte Carlo method used to compute the partial structure factors STi-Ti(K), STi-Cu(K), STi-Ni(K), SCu-Cu(K…
We use the 1-bond -> 2-phonon percolation doublet of zincblende alloys as a mesoscope for an unusual insight into their phonon behavior under pressure. We focus on (Zn,Be)Se and show by Raman scattering that the original Be-Se doublet at ambient pressure, of the stretching-bending type, turns into a pure-bending singlet at the approach of the high-pressure ZnSe-like rocksalt phase, an unnatural one for the Be-Se bonds. The freezing of the Be-Se stretching mode is discussed within the scope of the percolation model (mesoscopic scale), with ab initio calculations in support (microscopic scale).
The demand for green energy increases day by day due to environmental concern and thermoelectric (TE) materials are one of the eco-friendly energy resources. Few authors reported high TE performance in TmCu$_3$Ch$_4$, reaching the figure of merit (ZT) above 2 at 1000K, from first-principles calculations neglecting electron-phonon scattering, spin-orbit coupling effect (SOC), and energy-dependent carrier lifetime. Here, thermoelectric transport properties of TmCu$_3$Ch$_4$ are reinvestigated through considering these parameters, and significant discrepancies are found. The ZT of p-type TaCu$_3$…
tructural transformation, pressure dependent elasticity behaviors, phonon, and thermodynamic properties of the equiatomic TiZr alloy are investigated by using first-principles density-functional theory. Our calculated lattice parameters and equation of state for $α$ and $ω$ phases as well as the phase transition sequence of $α$$\mathtt{\rightarrow}$$ω$$\mathtt{\rightarrow}$$β$ are consistent well with experiments. Elastic constants of $α$ and $ω$ phases indicate that they are mechanically stable. For cubic $β$ phase, however, it is mechanically unstable at zero pressure and the critical pressu…
Interest in high entropy alloy thermoelectric materials is predicated on achieving ultralow lattice thermal conductivity $κ\sub{L}$ through large compositional disorder. However, here we show that for a given mechanism, such as mass contrast phonon scattering, $κ\sub{L}$ will be minimized along the binary alloy with the highest mass contrast, such that adding an intermediate-mass atom to increase atomic disorder can increase thermal conductivity. Only when each component adds an independent scattering mechanism (such as adding strain fluctuation to an existing mass fluctuation) is there a bene…
A reliable prediction of interatomic force constants in disordered alloys is an outstanding problem. This is due to the need for a proper treatment of multisite (atleast pair) correlation within a random environment. The situation becomes even more challenging for systems with large difference in atomic size and mass. We propose a systematic density functional theory (DFT) based study to predict the ab-initio force constants in random alloys. The method is based on a marriage between special quasirandom structures (SQS) and the augmented space recursion (ASR) to calculate phonon spectra, densi…
The short and intermediate range order of an amorphous GeSe$_4$ alloy produced by Mechanical Alloying were studied by Reverse Monte Carlo simulations of its x-ray total structure factor and Raman scattering. The simulations were used to compute the $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Ge}}(r)$, $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Se}}(r)$ and $G^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Se-Se}}(r)$ partial distribution functions and the ${\cal S}^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Ge}}(K)$, ${\cal S}^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Ge-Se}}(K)$ and ${\cal S}^{\text{RMC}}_{\text{Se-Se}}(K)$ partial structure factors. We calculated the coordination numbers and i…
Thermal properties are of great interest in modern electronic devices and nanostructures. Calculating these properties is straightforward when the device is made from a pure material, but problems arise when alloys are used. Specifically, only approximate bandstructures can be computed for random alloys and most often the Virtual Crystal Approximation (VCA) is used. Unfolding methods [T. B. Boykin, N. Kharche, G. Klimeck, and M. Korkusinski, J. Phys.: Condens. Matt. 19, 036203 (2007).] have proven very useful for tight-binding calculations of alloy electronic structure without the problems in …
