D2-D8 model admits a numerical solution that corresponds to a charge density wave and a spin density wave. Considering that as the background, we numerically solve the Dirac equation for probe fermions. From the solution, we obtain the Green's function and study the behaviour of the spectral density. We begin with generic fermions and have studied the formation of the Fermi surface and where it develops a gap. In addition, we have incorporated an ionic lattice and study its effect on the Fermi surface. Then we analysed the worldvolume fermions. In this particular model we do not find Fermi surface for the dual operators.
Non-Fermi liquids can be studied using holographic duality. The low energy physics of a holographic Fermi surface is controlled by an emergent scale invariance. After reviewing these developments, we generalize the holographic calculation to include in the bulk action the leading irrelevant operator, which is a dipole coupling between the spinor field and the background gauge field. We find that this dipole coupling changes the attainable low-energy scaling dimensions, and changes the locations of the Fermi surfaces in momentum space. The structure of the holographic framework for non-Fermi li…
We study the holographic dual of a finite density system with both bosonic and fermionic degrees of freedom. There is no evidence for a universal bose-dominated ground state. Instead, depending on the relative conformal weights the preferred groundstate is either pure AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom, a holographic superconductor, an electron star, or a novel mixed state that is best characterized as a hairy electron star.
We extend the relation between stochstic quantization and Holographic Wilsonian Renormalization Group to the massive fermion case in Euclidean AdS space. The original suggestion about the explicit relation between the two theories is in arXiv:1209.2242. To give a fermion bulk action the Dirichlet boundary condition and the Neumann boundary condition, there are some additional terms to the bulk action. We have confirmed that the relation also hold for massive fermion case.
We consider fermion correlators in non-abelian holographic superconductors. The spectral function of the fermions exhibits several interesting features such as support in displaced Dirac cones and an asymmetric distribution of normal modes. These features are compared to similar ones observed in angle resolved photoemission experiments on high T_c superconductors. Along the way we elucidate some properties of p-wave superconductors in AdS_4 and discuss the construction of SO(4) superconductors.
We discuss fermions in a spontaneously generated holographic lattice background. The lattice structure at the boundary is generated by introducing a higher-derivative interaction term between a U(1) gauge field and a scalar field. We solve the equations of motion below the critical temperature at which the lattice forms, and analyze the change in the Fermi surface due to the lattice. The fermion band structure is found to exhibit a band gap due to lattice effects.
We consider a holographic fermionic system in which the fermions are interacting with a U(1) gauge field in the presence of a dilaton field in a gravity bulk of a charged black hole with hyperscaling violation. Using both analytical and numerical methods, we investigate the properties of the infrared and ultaviolet Green's functions of the holographic fermionic system. Studying the spectral functions of the system, we find that as the hyperscaling violation exponent is varied, the fermionic system possesses Fermi, non-Fermi, marginal-Fermi and log-oscillating liquid phases. Various liquid phas…
We study the ferminoic spectrum with Weyl correction, which exhibits the non-Fermi liquid behavior. Also, we find that both the height of the peak of the fermionic spectrum and the dispersion relation exhibit a nonlinearity with the variety of the Weyl coupling parameter $γ$, which mean that such nonlinearity maybe ascribe to the one of the Maxwell field. Another important property of this system is that for the holographic fermionic system with $γ<0$, the degree of the deviation from Fermi liquid is heavier than that for the one with $γ>0$. It indicates that there is a transition of coupling …
We consider fermions in a zero-temperature superconducting anti-de Sitter domain wall solution and find continuous bands of normal modes. These bands can be either partially filled or totally empty and gapped. We present a semi-classical argument which approximately captures the main features of the normal mode spectrum.
We have studied holographic Wilsonian renormalization group (HWRG) of free massless fermionic fields in AdS space and its stochastic quantization(SQ) by identifying the Euclidean action with its boundary on-shell action. The natural extension of the relation between stochastic 2-point correlation function and double trace coupling obtained from HWRG computation conjectured in arXiv:1209.2242 to fermionic fields is established. We have confirmed that the stochastic 2-point function precisely captures the radial flow of the double trace coupling via this relation.
Holographic inflation posits that the inflationary deSitter era of our universe is approximately described by a dual three-dimensional Euclidean CFT living on the spatial slice at the end of inflation. We point out that the BICEP2 results determine the central charge of this putative CFT to be given by $C_T=1.2 \times 10^9$.
Electron stars are fluids of charged fermions in Anti-de Sitter spacetime. They are candidate holographic duals for gauge theories at finite charge density and exhibit emergent Lifshitz scaling at low energies. This paper computes in detail the field theory Green's function G^R(w,k) of the gauge-invariant fermionic operators making up the star. The Green's function contains a large number of closely spaced Fermi surfaces, the volumes of which add up to the total charge density in accordance with the Luttinger count. Excitations of the Fermi surfaces are long lived for w <~ k^z. Beyond w ~ k^z …
We investigate the holographic fermions over a gravitational lattice background with a rather low temperature. Since the rotation symmetry is broken on the plane, the lattice effects change the shape of the Fermi surface within the first Brillouin zone from a circle to an ellipse. When the Fermi surface intersects with the Brillouin zone boundary, the band structure with a band gap is observed through a numerical analysis. We construct a lattice model sourced by a scalar field as well as an ionic lattice model without the scalar field. In both cases we find the similar physical results.
By imposing the relativistic boundary term and Lorentz violating that in the dilatonic black brane with a Lifshitz like IR geometry and $AdS_4$ boundary, we study the properties of the spectral functions of the fermions. We find that in the two fixed points, there are emergent Fermi-surface structures and many properties seem to be in agreement with that of Fermi liquid. Especially, the low energy behavior exhibits a linear dispersion relation. In addition, we also find that a holographic flat band also emerges in this background of the dilatonic black brane.
We calculate the two-point Green's functions of operators dual to fermions of maximal gauged supergravity in four and five dimensions, in finite temperature backgrounds with finite charge density. The numerical method used in these calculations is based on differential equations for bilinears of the supergravity fermions rather than the equations of motion for the fermions themselves. The backgrounds we study have vanishing entropy density in appropriate extremal limits. Holographic Fermi surfaces are observed when the scalar field participating in the dual field theory operator has an expecta…
We study the application of our recent holographic entanglement negativity conjecture for mixed states of adjacent subsystems in conformal field theories with a conserved charge. In this context we obtain the holographic entanglement negativity for zero and finite temperature mixed state configurations in $d$-dimensional conformal field theories dual to bulk extremal and non extremal charged $AdS_{d+1}$ black holes. Our results conform to quantum information theory expectations and constitute significant consistency checks for our conjecture.
Techniques arising from string theory can be used to study assemblies of strongly-interacting fermions. Via this `holographic duality', various strongly-coupled many body systems are solved using an auxiliary theory of gravity. Simple holographic realizations of finite density exhibit single-particle spectral functions with sharp Fermi surfaces, of a form distinct from those of the Landau theory. The self-energy is given by a correlation function in an infrared fixed point theory which is represented by an AdS_2 region in the dual gravitational description. Here we describe in detail the gravi…
We prove that the purely classical gravity dual of Fermi and non-Fermi liquids exist by employing the logarithmic behavior of entanglement entropy to probe Fermi surfaces. For isotropic systems, the logarithmic behavior originates only from UV-IR intermediate regions of the minimal area surface. For anisotropic systems, the surfaces' configuration becomes largely modified by spatial anisotropy and series of solutions exist. By imposing the null energy condition we show that the specific heat behaves as $C\propto T^α$ where $α\leq1$, in both systems. In the end, we also present an effective gra…
We study the effects of an external magnetic field on the properties of the quasiparticle spectrum of the class of 2+1 dimensional strongly coupled theories holographically dual to charged AdS$_4$ black holes at zero temperature. We uncover several interesting features. At certain values of the magnetic field, there are multiple quasiparticle peaks representing a novel level structure of the associated Fermi surfaces. Furthermore, increasing magnetic field deforms the dispersion characteristics of the quasiparticle peaks from non-Landau toward Landau behaviour. At a certain value of the magnet…
We have considered D2-D8 model and obtain a numerical solution that exhibits spatially modulated phases corresponding to a charge density wave and a spin density wave. We have analysed behavior of the free energy density for different values of the chemical potential and the magnetic field.
We show that strongly coupled holographic matter at finite charge density can exhibit charge density wave phases which spontaneously break translation invariance while preserving time-reversal and parity invariance. We show that such phases are possible within Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory in general spacetime dimensions. We also discuss related spatially modulated phases when there is an additional coupling to a second vector field, possibly with non-zero mass. We discuss how these constructions, and others, should be associated with novel spatially modulated ground states.
In this paper, we investigate a holographic model of superconductor with hidden Fermi surfaces, which was defined by the logarithmic violation of area law of entanglement entropy. We works in fully back-reacted background using standard Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton action with additional complex scalar filed which was charged under the Maxwell field. Particularly, we analyze the behavior of entanglement entropy during the phase transition. At the critical point, the finite part of the entanglement entropy has a discontinuity of slope and tends to a lower value in the superconducting phase all the …
We construct a new class of entanglement measures by extending the usual definition of Renyi entropy to include a chemical potential. These charged Renyi entropies measure the degree of entanglement in different charge sectors of the theory and are given by Euclidean path integrals with the insertion of a Wilson line encircling the entangling surface. We compute these entropies for a spherical entangling surface in CFT's with holographic duals, where they are related to entropies of charged black holes with hyperbolic horizons. We also compute charged Renyi entropies in free field theories.
The DC resistivity of charge density waves weakly-pinned by disorder is controlled by diffusive, incoherent processes rather than slow momentum relaxation. The corresponding incoherent conductivity can be computed in the limit of zero disorder. We compute this transport coefficient in holographic spatially modulated breaking translations spontaneously. As a by-product of our analysis, we clarify how the boundary heat current is obtained from a conserved bulk current, defined as a suitable generalization of the Iyer-Wald Noether current of the appropriate Killing vector.
In this note, we study the effects of non-zero magnetic field on the fermion spectral function coupled with a non-minimal coupling in the background of a dyonic $AdS_4$ black hole. The system can be reduced to a non magnetic one with the momentum being quantized into Landau levels $n$. By tuning the coupling parameter, we study its effect on the Fermi level and the quasiparticle width. We found an interesting scaling relation between the decay width and the coupling parameter, with a universal scaling exponent which is independent of the levels $n$.
The Reissner-Nordstrom black hole provides the prototypical description of a holographic system at finite density. We study the response of this system to the presence of a local, charged impurity. Below a critical temperature, the induced charge density, which screens the impurity, exhibits oscillations. These oscillations can be traced to the singularities in the density-density correlation function moving in the complex momentum plane. At finite temperature, the oscillations are very similar to the Friedel oscillations seen in Fermi liquids. However, at zero temperature the oscillations in …
The absence of fixed momentum excitations in a theory with Lifshitz scale invariance gives rise to exponential suppression of spectral weight in the low-frequency limit. In the holographic dual, this suppression arises as a consequence of a tunneling barrier that decouples the horizon from the boundary. We compute the spin-1/2 holographic Green's function and show that the form of the barrier is identical to that of the scalar case. We furthermore demonstrate that the suppression factor is universal in the $\hatω\to0$ limit where $\hatω=ω/|\vec k|^z$. In particular, it depends only on $\hatω$ …
We investigate a dynamically generated Mott gap from holographic fermions in asymptotically geometries with hyperscaling violation by employing a bulk dipole coupling for the fermion field. We find that when the coupling strength increases the spectral function first transfers to the negative frequency region but soon redistributes to the positive region. A stable gap and two bands emerges for all momentum when the coupling strength beyonds a critical value. Generally, The upper band on the positive frequency axis is much sharper than the lower band on the negative side. When the diploe coupli…
We study the effects of a non-zero magnetic field on a class of 2+1 dim non-Fermi liquids, recently found in 0903.2477 by considering properties of a fermionic probe in an extremal AdS^4 black hole background. Introducing a similar fermionic probe in a dyonic AdS^4 black hole geometry, we find that the effect of a magnetic field could be incorporated in a rescaling of the probe fermion's charge. From this simple fact, we observe interesting effects like gradual disappearance of the Fermi surface and quasi particle peaks at large magnetic fields and changes in other properties of the system. We…
We consider the real-time holography on Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) and more generally on Lifshitz spacetimes for spinorial fields. The equation of motion for fermions on general Lifshitz space is derived. Analytically solvable cases are identified. On AdS space we derived time-ordered, time-reversed, advanced and retarded propagators with the correct i ε-insertions. Using the Keldysh-Schwinger contour we also calculated a propagator on thermal AdS. For massless fermions on the Lifshitz spacetime with z=2 we calculated the Euclidean 2-point function and explored the structure of divergences of the on…
In this paper, based on the holographic techniques, we explore the hydrodynamics of charge diffusion phenomena in non commutative $ \mathcal{N}=4 $ SYM plasma at strong coupling. In our analysis, we compute the $ R $ charge diffusion rates both along commutative as well as the non commutative coordinates of the brane. It turns out that unlike the case for the shear viscosity, the DC conductivity along the non commutative direction of the brane differs significantly from that of its cousin corresponding to the commutative direction of the brane. Such a discrepancy however smoothly goes away in …
Near-superradiant scattering of charged scalars and fermions by a near-extreme Kerr-Newman black hole and photons and gravitons by a near-extreme Kerr black hole are computed as certain Fourier transforms of correlators in a two-dimensional conformal field theory. The results agree with the classic spacetime calculations from the 1970s, thereby providing good evidence for a conjectured Kerr-Newman/CFT correspondence.
We study four-dimensional interacting fermions in a strong magnetic field, using the holographic Sakai-Sugimoto model of intersecting D4 and D8 branes in the deconfined, chiral-symmetric parallel phase. We find that as the magnetic field is varied, while staying in the parallel phase, the fermions exhibit a first-order phase transition in which their magnetization jumps discontinuously. Properties of this transition are consistent with a picture in which some of the fermions jump to the lowest Landau level. Similarities to known magnetic phase transitions are discussed.

We further consider a probe fermion in a dyonic black hole background in anti-de Sitter spacetime, at zero temperature, comparing and contrasting two distinct classes of solution that have previously appeared in the literature. Each class has members labeled by an integer n, corresponding to the n-th Landau level for the fermion. Our interest is the study of the spectral function of the fermion, interpreting poles in it as indicative of quasiparticles associated with the edge of a Fermi surface in the holographically dual strongly coupled theory in a background magnetic field H at finite chemi…
This discussion is aimed at identifying physically relevant, albeit lying off the beaten track, gravity models that may provide a holographic description of some prototypical non-Fermi liquid states of strongly correlated condensed matter systems.
We study fermion correlators in a holographic superfluid with a d-wave (spin two) order parameter. We find that, with a suitable bulk Majorana coupling, the Fermi surface is anisotropically gapped. At low temperatures the gap shrinks to four nodal points. At high temperatures the Fermi surface is partially gapped generating four Fermi arcs.
We analyze the charge diffusion and conductivity in a Dp/Dq holographic setup that is dual to a supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in p+1 dimensions with N_f<< N_c flavour degrees of freedom at finite temperature and nonvanishing U(1) baryon number chemical potential. We provide a new derivation of the results that generalize the membrane paradigm to the present context. We perform a numerical analysis in the particular case of the D3/D7 flavor system. The results obtained support the validity of the Einstein relation at finite chemical potential.
Driven by the landscape of garden-variety condensed matter systems, we have investigated how the dual spectral function behaves at the non-relativistic as well as relativistic fermionic fixed point by considering the probe Dirac fermion in an extremal charged dilatonic black hole with zero entropy. Although the pattern for both of the appearance of flat band and emergence of Fermi surface is qualitatively similar to that given by the probe fermion in the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom AdS black hole, we find a distinctly different low energy behavior around the Fermi surface, which can be traced …
We investigate the extension of a holographic construction for the entanglement negativity of two disjoint subsystems in proximity to $CFT_d$s with a conserved charge dual to bulk $AdS_{d+1}$ geometries. The construction involves a specific algebraic sum of the areas of bulk co-dimension two static minimal surfaces homologous to certain appropriate combinations of the subsystems in question. In this connection we compute the holographic entanglement negativity for two disjoint subsystems in proximity, with long rectangular strip geometries in $CFT_d$s dual to bulk non extremal and extremal RN-…
We clarify the relation between the Noether charge associated to an arbitrary vector field and the equations of motions by revisiting Wald formalism. For a time-like Killing vector, aspects of the Noether charge suggest that it is dual to the heat current in the boundary for general holographic theories. For a space-like Killing vector, we interpret the Noether charge (at the transverse direction) as shear stress of the dual fluid so we can compute the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density by simply using the infrared data on the black hole event horizon. We test the new method for Einst…
We study holographic Wilsonian RG in a general class of asymptotically AdS backgrounds with a U(1) gauge field. We consider free charged Dirac fermions in such a background, and integrate them up to an intermediate radial distance, yielding an equivalent low energy dual field theory. The new ingredient, compared to scalars, involves a `generalized' basis of coherent states which labels a particular half of the fermion components as coordinates or momenta, depending on the choice of quantization (standard or alternative). We apply this technology to explicitly compute RG flows of charged fermio…
In this paper, based on the notion of Gauge/Gravity duality, we explore the laws of entanglement thermodynamics for most generic classes of Quantum Field Theories with hyperscaling violation. In our analysis, we note that for Quantum Field Theories with compressible \textit{quark} like excitation, the first law of entanglement thermodynamics gets modified due to the presence of an additional term that could be identified as the entanglement chemical potential associated with \textit{hidden} Fermi surfaces of the boundary theory. Most notably, we find that the so called entanglement chemical po…
In this letter, we systematically explore the holographic (non-)relativistic fermionic spectrum without/with dipole coupling dual to Born-Infeld anti-de Sitter (BI-AdS) black hole. For the relativistic fermionic fixed point, this holographic fermionic system exhibits non-Fermi liquid behavior. Also, with the increase of BI parameter $γ$, the non-Fermi liquid becomes even "more non-Fermi". When the dipole coupling term is included, we find that the BI term makes it a lot tougher to form the gap. While for the non-relativistic fermionic system with large dipole coupling in BI-AdS background, wit…
We analyse some phenomenological implications of the most general semi-holographic models for non-Fermi liquids that have emerged with inputs from the holographic correspondence. We find generalizations of Landau-Silin equations with few parameters governing thermodynamics, low energy response and collective excitations. We show that even when there is a Fermi surface with well-defined quasi-particle excitations, the collective excitations can behave very differently from Landau's theory.
Exploring the significant impacts of topological charge on the holographic phase transitions and conductivity we start from an Einstein - Maxwell system coupled with a charged scalar field in Anti - de Sitter spacetime. In our set up, the corresponding black hole (BH) is chosen to be the topological AdS one where the pressure is identified with the cosmological constant. Our numerical computation shows that the process of condensation is favored at finite topological charge and, in particular, the pressure variation in the bulk generates a mechanism for changing the order of phase transitions …
We study a holographic toy model by considering a probe fermion of finite charge density in an anisotropic background. By computing the fermionic spectral function numerically, we observed that the system exhibits some interesting behaviours in the nature of the Fermi surface (FS) and its evolution when tuning the controlling parameters. We introduced non-minimal interaction terms in the action for holographic fermions along with a complex scalar field but neglecting the backreaction of the fermions field on the background. Suppression in the spectral weight and deformation of FS is observed, …
In this paper, we consider deformed STU model in four dimensions including both electric and magnetic charges. Using AdS/CFT correspondence, we study holographic superconductor and obtain transport properties like electrical and thermal conductivities. We obtain transport properties in terms of the black hole magnetic charge and interpret it as magnetic monopole of dual field theory. We find that presence of magnetic charge is necessary to have maximum conductivities, and existence of magnetic monopole with a critical charge (137 e) to reach the maximum superconductivity is important. Also, we…
We study a light-like charged collapsing shell in AdS-Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime, investigating whether the corresponding Vaidya metric is supported by matter that satisfies the null energy condition. We find that, if the absolute value of the charge decreases during the collapse, energy conditions are fulfilled everywhere in spacetime. On the other hand, if the absolute value of the charge increases, the metric does not satisfy energy conditions in the IR region. Therefore, from the gauge/gravity perspective, this last case is only useful to study the thermalization of the UV degrees of fre…
In this paper, based on the principles of gauge/gravity duality and considering the so called \textit{hydrodynamic} limit we compute various charge transport properties for a class of strongly coupled non relativistic CFTs corresponding to $ z=2 $ fixed point whose dual gravitational counter part could be realized as the consistent truncation of certain non relativistic $ Dp $ branes in the non extremal limit. From our analysis we note that unlike the case for the AdS black branes, the charge diffusion constant in the non relativistic background scales differently with the temperature. This sh…
Holographic properties of a finite density fermion system have been shown to exhibit many interesting behaviours which can be observed in future. In this paper, we study low energy fermion properties in the framework of the holographic Mott-Insulator system. We study the nature of the Fermi surface and its evolution by tuning two types of dipole couplings in the bulk. We further introduce translational symmetry breaking complex scalar field, which is assumed to couple with the holographic fermions. The symmetry breaking background induced by the scalar field is known as Q-lattice. We calculate…
We present an alternative way of computing nonrelativistic single-particle spectra from holography. To this end, we introduce a mass gap in a holographic Dirac semimetal and subsequently study the nonrelativistic limit of the resulting spectral functions. We use this method to compute the momentum distributions and the equation of state of our nonrelativistic fermions, of which the latter can be used to extract all thermodynamic properties of the system. We find that our results are universal and reproduce many experimentally and theoretically known features of an ultracold Fermi gas at unitar…
We show that the Luttinger theorem, a robust feature of Fermi liquids, can be violated in non-Fermi liquids. We compute non-Fermi liquid Green functions using duality to black holes and find that the volume of the Fermi surface depends exponentially on the scaling dimension, which is a measure of the coupling. This demonstrates that Luttinger's theorem does not extend to non-Fermi liquids. We comment on possible experimental signatures.
