A new method of angle estimation of multiple targets using a distributed interferometric antenna array and wideband space-time modulation is presented in this work. Interferometric array measurements of angle of arrival are generally ambiguous in the presence of one or more targets. We propose a new method of mitigating ambiguities in interferometric measurements by multiplying the angle pseudo-spectra from multiple antenna baselines, resulting in detections at only the angles of the targets. Using a single linear frequency modulated (LFM) transmitter and a receive interferometric array with $N$ elements we show a simple and computationally efficient technique to estimate the angle of up to $\mathcal{O}(N^2)$ targets. We describe the theory behind the technique, present detailed simulations, and an experimental verification using a three-element millimeter-wave measurement system.
In this letter, a dual port antenna with polarization adjustability is proposed. The loading effect of four ring slots stimulates a hybrid mode in the antenna that generates eight magnetic monopoles with high gain in boresight. Due to symmetrical configuration, adding a 90 degree-rotated port provides a dual polarized antenna. Through controlling the phase difference between the two ports, six types of polarization can be demonstrated. A prototype is fabricated and measured in 28 GHz. Antenna shows a maximum gain of 13 dBi, X% bandwidth and a good cross-polarization level in all polarization s…
A new method of distortion mitigation for multitarget interferometric angular velocity estimation in millimeter-wave radar is presented. In general, when multiple targets are present, the response of a correlation interferometer is corrupted by intermodulation distortion, making it difficult to estimate individual target angular velocities. We present a distortion mitigation method that works by decomposing the responses at each antenna element into the responses from the individual targets. Data association is performed to match individual target responses at each antenna such that cross-corr…
In this work, a method for directly measuring target velocity in three dimensions using a dual axis correlation interferometric radar is presented. Recent advances have shown that the measurement of a target's angular velocity is possible by correlating the signals measured at spatially diverse aperture locations. By utilizing multiple orthogonal baselines and using conventional Doppler velocity methods to obtain radial velocity, a full three-dimensional velocity vector can be obtained using only three receive antennas and a single transmitter, without the need for tracking. A $\text{41.8 GHz}…
While initial beam alignment (BA) in millimeter-wave networks has been thoroughly investigated, most research assumes a simplified terminal model based on uniform linear/planar arrays with isotropic antennas. Devices with non-isotropic antenna elements need multiple panels to provide good spherical coverage, and exhaustive search over all beams of all the panels leads to unacceptable overhead. This paper proposes a location- and orientation-aware solution that manages the initial BA for multi-panel devices. We present three different neural network structures that provide efficient BA with a w…
Beamspace multi-input multi-output (MIMO) relying on lens antenna arrays can significantly reduce the number of radio-frequency chains in millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems through beam selection. However, the beamforming gain is actually frequency-dependent in wideband mmWave MIMO systems. This phenomenon is called beam squint, which will deteriorate the system's performance when traditional beam selection methods are used. To solve this problem, we propose a wideband beam selection method for mmWave MIMO systems relying on lens antenna arrays. Firstly, we select one beam with the…
This paper studies a gain of an antenna array embedded on a mobile device operating at a millimeter-wave radio frequency. Assuming that mobile phones at millimeter-wave range operate with a single baseband unit and analog beamforming like phased arrays, we define a total array gain denoting a path gain of the phased antenna array in excess to the omni-directional path gain. The total array gain circumvents the ambiguity of conventional array gain which cannot be uniquely defined as there are multiple choices of a reference single-element antenna in an array. Two types of 8-element patch antenn…
This paper investigates multi-mode and orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode data transmission techniques by a using a circular antenna array, operating at 28 GHz. The classical mode excitation of the latter is modified such that in the horizontal plane the antenna array operates as multimode transmitter (i.e., it provides broad- , uni- and/or multi-cast transmission), while in the vertical direction OAM transmission occurs: this dual-functionality by a single antenna-array at 28 GHz is presented for the first time. Specifically, it can transmit/receive in either broad-, uni-, multi-cast mode in…
Recently, the use of millimeter wave (mmW) frequencies has emerged as a promising solution for wirelessly connecting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to ground users. However, employing UAVassisted directional mmW links is challenging due to the random fluctuations of hovering UAVs. In this paper, the performance of UAV-based mmW links is investigated when UAVs are equipped with square array antennas. The 3GPP antenna propagation patterns are used to model the square array antenna. It is shown that the square array antenna is sensitive to both horizontal and vertical angular vibrations of UAVs.…
The paper addresses the problem of determining the unknown position of a mobile station for a mmWave MISO system. This setup is motivated by the fact that massive arrays will be initially implemented only on 5G base stations, likely leaving mobile stations with one antenna. The maximum likelihood solution to this problem is devised based on the time of flight and angle of departure of received downlink signals. While positioning in the uplink would rely on angle of arrival, it presents scalability limitations that are avoided in the downlink. To circumvent the multidimensional optimization of …
The densely packed antennas of millimeter-Wave (mmWave) MIMO systems are often blocked by the rain, snow, dust and even by fingers, which will change the channel's characteristics and degrades the system's performance. In order to solve this problem, we propose a cross-entropy inspired antenna array diagnosis detection (CE-AAD) technique by exploiting the correlations of adjacent antennas, when blockages occur at the transmitter. Then, we extend the proposed CE-AAD algorithm to the case, where blockages occur at transmitter and receiver simultaneously. Our simulation results show that the prop…

This paper summarizes an investigation around millimeter-wave (mmWave) multimode circular antenna array based beamformer capable of specially encoded data transmission in a wide coverage area. The circular antenna array is capable of an entire 360 deg. azimuth sector coverage where broadcast, uni-cast and multi-cast radio transmissions are possible. Orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode transmission along the elevation axis, i.e., perpendicular to the azimuth plane, can also be achieved. These two types of spatially encoded beamforming makes coverage in almost an entire hemisphere possible. The …
The rate loss is an important issue for multi-user beamspace multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) millimeter-wave systems. In such systems, multi-cluster channel propagation leads as a function of the quantization error and, as a result, each active user suffers a significant rate loss. Particularly, a conventional single beam selection (SBS) scheme is used in an equivalent beamspace MIMO channel to reduce the required number of radio frequency (RF) chains, but this scheme does not properly mitigate the quantization error due to the limited number of the channel propagation clusters per-user.…
This paper proposes a beamforming design for millimeter-wave (mmWave) backhaul systems with dual-polarization antennas in uniform planar arrays (UPAs). The proposed design method optimizes a beamformer to mimic an ideal beam pattern, which has flat gain across its coverage, under the dominance of the line-of-sight (LOS) component in mmWave systems. The dual-polarization antenna structure is considered as constraints of the optimization. Simulation results verify that the resulting beamformer has uniform beam pattern and high minimum gain in the covering region.

The integration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless systems has been recently proposed to provide high data rate aerial links for next generation wireless networks. However, establishing UAV-based mmWave links is quite challenging due to the random fluctuations of hovering UAVs which can induce antenna gain mismatch between transmitter and receiver. To assess the benefit of UAV-based mmWave links, in this paper, tractable, closed-form statistical channel models are derived for three UAV communication scenarios: (i) a direct UAV-to-UAV link, (ii) an aerial r…
Exploiting multi-antenna technologies for robust beamsteering to overcome the effects of blockage and beam misalignment is the key to providing seamless multi-Gbps connectivity in millimeter-wave (mm-wave) networks. We systematically collect fine-grained 3D angle-of-arrival (AoA) and angle-of-departure (AoD) data, totaling over 50,000 received signal strength measurements. We study the impact of phased antenna arrays in terms of number of link opportunities…
This letter presents the first experimental results of our three-dimensional (3D) millimeter-wave (mm-wave) Compressive-Reflector-Antenna (CRA) imaging system. In this prototype, the CRA is 3D-printed and coated with a metallic spray to easily introduce pseudo-random scatterers on the surface of a traditional reflector antenna (TRA). The CRA performs a pseudo random coding of the incident wavefront, thus adding spatial diversity in the imaging region and enabling the effective use of compressive sensing (CS) and imaging techniques. The CRA is fed with a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) ra…

The UEs are equipped with a beam-switchable antenna array for real-time antenna selection where the one with the highest channel magnitude, out of four pre-defined beams, is selected. For the beam-switchable antenna array, we consider two kinds of UE antennas, with…
Millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging has a wide prospect in application of concealed weapons detection. We propose a circular-arc multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) array scheme with uniformly spaced transmit and receive antennas along the horizontal-arc direction, while scanning along the vertical direction. The antenna beams of the circular-arc MIMO array can provide more uniform coverage of the imaging scene than those of the linear or planar MIMO arrays. Further, a near-field three-dimensional (3-D) imaging algorithm, based on the spatial frequency domain processing, is presented with analysis…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems rely on large-scale antenna arrays to combat large path-loss at mmWave band. Due to hardware characteristics and deployment environments, mmWave large-scale antenna systems are vulnerable to antenna element blockages and failures, which necessitate diagnostic techniques to locate faulty antenna elements for calibration purposes. Current diagnostic techniques require full or partial knowledge of channel state information (CSI), which can be challenging to acquire in the presence of antenna failures. In this letter, we propose a blind diagnostic tec…
We analyze the diversity gain for a distributed antenna subarray employing orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) in millimeter-wave (mm-Wave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We show that the diversity gain depends on the number of transmitted data streams, the number of remote antenna units, and the number of propagation paths between RAUs. Furthermore, we show that by using bit-interleaved coded multiple beamforming (BICMB), one can achieve the maximum diversity gain in a distributed antenna subarray system. The assumption in both scenarios is that the numbe…
In this paper, two large-scale fading path loss models are presented based on indoor and outdoor channel measurements at 73 GHz. The line-of-sight millimeter-wave propagation measurement campaigns were uniquely conducted within the indoor and outdoor environments at an airport setting, i.e., the Boise Airport. The channel measurements were made with directional transmit and receive antennas with a 24 dBi gain at different receive antenna heights. From the measured data, we obtained the parameters of two path loss models, i.e., the close-in reference distance model (CIM) and the floating-interc…
Penetration of cellphones into markets requires their robust operation in time-varying radio environments, especially for millimeter-wave communications. Hands and fingers of a human cause significant changes in the physical environments of cellphones, which influence the communication qualities to a large extent. In this paper, electromagnetic models of real hands and cellphone antennas are developed, and their efficacy is verified through measurements for the first time in the literature. The high path loss associated with millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency communication can be compensated by large scale antenna arrays such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. The hybrid beamforming architecture which uses fewer radio frequency chains is implemented to reduce power consumption and hardware complexity, while still supporting multi-stream communication. We propose an efficient expectation-maximization (EM)-based mmWave channel estimator for a lens-based hybrid MIMO system with low resolution sampling at the receiver. The lens-based beamformer is investigated to provi…
In this paper we present the first comprehensive study of the multi-user capacity of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) urban cellular networks, using site-specific ray-tracing propagation data and realistic antenna array patterns. We compare the performance of TDMA and SDMA (time and spatial division multiple access, respectively) for diverse network scenarios and antenna configurations. We propose a greedy heuristic algorithm to solve the network-wide directional link allocation problem, thereby estimating the achievable capacity and coverage of multi-user mm-wave networks. Our results show that inte…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems use directional beams to support high-rate data communications. Small misalignment between the transmit and receive beams (e.g., due to the mobility) can result in significant drop of the received signal quality especially in line-of-sight communication channels. In this paper, we propose and evaluate high-resolution angle tracking strategies for wideband mmWave systems with mobility. We custom design pairs of auxiliary beams as the tracking beams, and use them to capture the angle variations, towards which the steering directions of the data beams are adjusted…
An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with transmit antenna selection (TAS) using orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC) scheme is proposed in this paper. This system combines TAS and IRS with hybrid analog-digital beamforming (HBF) for 60 GHz mmWave communications in order to exploit the benefits of TAS, OSTBC, analog beamforming (ABF), and transmit digital precoding techniques. The proposed system, however, benefits from the transmit diversity gain of OSTBC scheme as well as from the signal-to-noise r…
Enabling highly-mobile millimeter wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) wireless communication applications requires overcoming the critical challenges associated with the large antenna arrays deployed at these systems. In particular, adjusting the narrow beams of these antenna arrays typically incurs high beam training overhead that scales with the number of antennas. To address these challenges, this paper proposes a multi-modal machine learning based approach that leverages positional and visual (camera) data collected from the wireless communication environment for fast beam prediction. The de…
The concept of self-mixing antenna arrays is presented and analyzed with respect to its beneficial behavior of large gain over a wide angular range. The large gain is attained by an antenna array with large element spacing, where all array element signals are combined approximately coherently over the entire angular receiving range. This functionality is achieved by the self-mixing principle, where an exact description via an intermediate frequency (IF) array factor is derived. For verification purposes, a 4 x 2 self-mixing array is fabricated and measured in the frequency range from 34 GHz to…
Millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) systems relying on lens antenna arrays are capable of achieving a high antenna-gain at a considerably reduced number of radio frequency (RF) chains via beam selection. However, the traditional beam selection network suffers from significant performance loss in wideband systems due to the effect of beam squint. In this paper, we propose a phase shifter-aided beam selection network, which enables a single RF chain to support multiple focused-energy beams, for mitigating the beam squint in wideband mmWave MIMO systems. Based on this arch…
Hybrid analog-digital precoding is challenging for broadband millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems, since the analog precoder is frequency-flat but the mmWave channels are frequency-selective. In this paper, we propose a principal component analysis (PCA)-based broadband hybrid precoder/combiner design, where both the fully-connected array and partially-connected subarray (including the fixed and adaptive subarrays) are investigated. Specifically, we first design the hybrid precoder/combiner for fully-connected array and fixed subarray based on PCA, whereby a low-dimensional frequency-…

Massive multiple-input multiple-out (MIMO) technology is vital in millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands to obtain large array gains. However, there are practical challenges, such as high hardware cost and power consumption in such systems. A promising solution to these problems is to adopt a hybrid beamforming architecture. This architecture has a much lower number of transceiver (TRx) chains than the total antenna number, resulting in cost- and energy-efficient systems. In this paper, we present a real-time mmWave (28 GHz) massive MIMO testbed with hybrid beamforming. This testbed has a 64-antenna/1…
In this paper, the impact of imperfect beam alignment (IBA) on millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless power transfer (WPT) is investigated. We consider a mmWave WPT network, where the location of the energy transmitters follows a Poisson point process. Instead of the mostly used flat-top antenna model, we adopt the Gaussian antenna model suggested by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for better accuracy. Two beam alignment error (BAE) models, i.e., truncated Gaussian and uniform models, are introduced to represent different BAE sources. We derive the probability density functions (PDFs)…
