Speech enhancement has benefited from the success of deep learning in terms of intelligibility and perceptual quality. Conventional time-frequency (TF) domain methods focus on predicting TF-masks or speech spectrum, via a naive convolution neural network (CNN) or recurrent neural network (RNN). Some recent studies use complex-valued spectrogram as a training target but train in a real-valued network, predicting the magnitude and phase component or real and imaginary part, respectively. Particularly, convolution recurrent network (CRN) integrates a convolutional encoder-decoder (CED) structure and long short-term memory (LSTM), which has been proven to be helpful for complex targets. In order to train the complex target more effectively, in this paper, we design a new network structure simulating the complex-valued operation, called Deep Complex Convolution Recurrent Network (DCCRN), where both CNN and RNN structures can handle complex-valued operation. The proposed DCCRN models are very competitive over other previous networks, either on objective or subjective metric. With only 3.7M parameters, our DCCRN models submitted to the Interspeech 2020 Deep Noise Suppression (DNS) challenge ranked first for the real-time-track and second for the non-real-time track in terms of Mean Opinion Score (MOS).
Deep complex convolution recurrent network (DCCRN), which extends CRN with complex structure, has achieved superior performance in MOS evaluation in Interspeech 2020 deep noise suppression challenge (DNS2020). This paper further extends DCCRN with the following significant revisions. We first extend the model to sub-band processing where the bands are split and merged by learnable neural network filters instead of engineered FIR filters, leading to a faster noise suppressor trained in an end-to-end manner. Then the LSTM is further substituted with a complex TF-LSTM to better model temporal dep…
In speech enhancement, complex neural network has shown promising performance due to their effectiveness in processing complex-valued spectrum. Most of the recent speech enhancement approaches mainly focus on wide-band signal with a sampling rate of 16K Hz. However, research on super wide band (e.g., 32K Hz) or even full-band (48K) denoising is still lacked due to the difficulty of modeling more frequency bands and particularly high frequency components. In this paper, we extend our previous deep complex convolution recurrent neural network (DCCRN) substantially to a super wide band version --…
In this paper, we propose a multi-channel network for simultaneous speech dereverberation, enhancement and separation (DESNet). To enable gradient propagation and joint optimization, we adopt the attentional selection mechanism of the multi-channel features, which is originally proposed in end-to-end unmixing, fixed-beamforming and extraction (E2E-UFE) structure. Furthermore, the novel deep complex convolutional recurrent network (DCCRN) is used as the structure of the speech unmixing and the neural network based weighted prediction error (WPE) is cascaded beforehand for speech dereverberation…

In speech enhancement, an end-to-end deep neural network converts a noisy speech signal to a clean speech directly in time domain without time-frequency transformation or mask estimation. However, aggregating contextual information from a high-resolution time domain signal with an affordable model complexity still remains challenging. In this paper, we propose a densely connected convolutional and recurrent network (DCCRN), a hybrid architecture, to enable dual-staged temporal context aggregation. With the dense connectivity and cross-component identical shortcut, DCCRN consistently outperform…
Several speech processing systems have demonstrated considerable performance improvements when deep complex neural networks (DCNN) are coupled with self-attention (SA) networks. However, the majority of DCNN-based studies on speech dereverberation that employ self-attention do not explicitly account for the inter-dependencies between real and imaginary features when computing attention. In this study, we propose a complex-valued T-F attention (TFA) module that models spectral and temporal dependencies by computing two-dimensional attention maps across time and frequency dimensions. We validate…
Speech enhancement algorithms based on deep learning have been improved in terms of speech intelligibility and perceptual quality greatly. Many methods focus on enhancing the amplitude spectrum while reconstructing speech using the mixture phase. Since the clean phase is very important and difficult to predict, the performance of these methods will be limited. Some researchers attempted to estimate the phase spectrum directly or indirectly, but the effect is not ideal. Recently, some studies proposed the complex-valued model and achieved state-of-the-art performance, such as deep complex convo…

Despite multiple efforts made towards adopting complex-valued deep neural networks (DNNs), it remains an open question whether complex-valued DNNs are generally more effective than real-valued DNNs for monaural speech enhancement. This work is devoted to presenting a critical assessment by systematically examining complex-valued DNNs against their real-valued counterparts. Specifically, we investigate complex-valued DNN atomic units, including linear layers, convolutional layers, long short-term memory (LSTM), and gated linear units. The dual-path RNN (DPRNN) was proposed to more effectively model extremely long sequences for speech separation in the time domain. By splitting long sequences to smaller chunks and applying intra-chunk and inter-chunk RNNs, the DPRNN reached promising performance in speech separation with a limited model size. In this paper, we combine the DPRNN module with Convolution Recurrent Network (CRN) and design a model called Dual-Path Convolution Recurrent Network (DPCRN) for speech enhancement in the time-frequency domain. We replace the RNNs in the CRN with DPRNN modules, where the intra-chunk RNN…
Generative adversarial network (GAN) still exists some problems in dealing with speech enhancement (SE) task. Some GAN-based systems adopt the same structure from Pixel-to-Pixel directly without special optimization. The importance of the generator network has not been fully explored. Other related researches change the generator network but operate in the time-frequency domain, which ignores the phase mismatch problem. In order to solve these problems, a deep complex convolution recurrent GAN (DCCRGAN) structure is proposed in this paper. The complex module builds the correlation between magn…

Acoustic environment characterization opens doors for sound reproduction innovations, smart EQing, speech enhancement, hearing aids, and forensics. Reverberation time, clarity, and direct-to-reverberant ratio are acoustic parameters that have been defined to describe reverberant environments. They are closely related to speech intelligibility and sound quality. As explained in the ISO3382 standard, they can be derived from a room measurement called the Room Impulse Response (RIR). However, measuring RIRs requires specific equipment and intrusive sound to be played. The recent audio combined wi…
We propose an end-to-end model based on convolutional and recurrent neural networks for speech enhancement. Our model is purely data-driven and does not make any assumptions about the type or the stationarity of the noise. In contrast to existing methods that use multilayer perceptrons (MLPs), we employ both convolutional and recurrent neural network architectures. Thus, our approach allows us to exploit local structures in both the frequency and temporal domains. By incorporating prior knowledge of speech signals into the design of model structures, we build a model that is more data-efficien…

Convolutional neural networks with skip connections have shown good performance in music source separation. In this work, we propose a denoising Auto-encoder with Recurrent skip Connections (ARC). We use 1D convolution along the temporal axis of the time-frequency feature map in all layers of the fully-convolutional network. The use of 1D convolution makes it possible to apply recurrent layers to the intermediate outputs of the convolution layers. In addition, we also propose an enhancement network and a residual regression method to further improve the separation result. The recurrent skip co…
This paper proposes a Region-based Convolutional Recurrent Neural Network (R-CRNN) for audio event detection (AED). The proposed network is inspired by Faster-RCNN, a well known region-based convolutional network framework for visual object detection. Different from the original Faster-RCNN, a recurrent layer is added on top of the convolutional network to capture the long-term temporal context from the extracted high level features. While most of the previous works on AED generate predictions at frame level first, and then use post-processing to predict the onset/offset timestamps of events f…
In acoustic signal processing, the target signals usually carry semantic information, which is encoded in a hierarchal structure of short and long-term contexts. However, the background noise distorts these structures in a nonuniform way. The existing deep acoustic signal enhancement (ASE) architectures ignore this kind of local and global effect. To address this problem, we propose to integrate a novel temporal attentive-pooling (TAP) mechanism into a conventional convolutional recurrent neural network, termed as TAP-CRNN. The proposed approach considers both global and local attention for AS…

The FBCRNN employs two recurrent neural network (RNN) classifiers sharing the same CNN for preprocessing. With one RNN processing a recording in forward direction and the other in backward direction, the two networks are trained to jointly predi…

This paper investigates the joint localization, detection, and tracking of sound events using a convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN). We use a CRNN previously proposed for the localization and detection of stationary sources, and show that the recurrent layers enable the spatial tracking of moving sources when trained with dynamic scenes. The tracking performance of the CRNN is compared with a stand-alone tracking method that combines a multi-source (DOA) estimator and a particle filter. Their respective performance is evaluated in various acoustic conditions such as anechoic and reve…
The recurrent neural network transducer (RNN-T) is a prominent streaming end-to-end (E2E) ASR technology. In RNN-T, the acoustic encoder commonly consists of stacks of LSTMs. Very recently, as an alternative to LSTM layers, the Conformer architecture was introduced where the encoder of RNN-T is replaced with a modified Transformer encoder composed of convolutional layers at the frontend and between attention layers. In this paper, we introduce a new streaming ASR model, Convolutional Augmented Recurrent Neural Network Transducers (ConvRNN-T) in which we augment the LSTM-based RNN-T with a nove…

Recent approaches for music source separation are almost exclusively based on deep neural networks, mostly employing recurrent neural networks (RNNs). Although RNNs are in many cases superior than other types of deep neural networks for sequence processing, they are known to have specific difficulties in training and parallelization, especially for the typically long sequences encountered in music source separation. In this paper we present a use-case of replacing RNNs with depth-wise separable (DWS) convolutions, which are a lightweight and faster variant of the typical convolutions. We focus…
