A solution to the black hole information problem requires propagation of information from the interior of the black hole to the exterior. Such propagation violates general relativity and could conceivably be accomplished through "firewall" models. Based on the existence of similar firewalls at the inner horizons of charged and rotating black holes, a model of a firewall was recently constructed where the exterior spacetime reduces to that of the Schwarzschild metric but with a dramatically different interior. We investigate the radial and nonradial polar stability of these objects. We first study the dynamics of the shell under spherically symmetric perturbations, and impose constraints on the firewall model parameters by requiring a subluminal speed of sound on the firewall. We show that the demands of stability and subluminality impose significant constraints on the internal parameters of the firewall, narrowing down the range of objects that could be used to create such a structure.
We study the Lifshitz black hole in 4-dimensions with dynamical exponent z=2 and we calculate analytically the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations. These quasinormal modes allows to study the stability of the Lifshitz black hole and we have obtained that Lifshitz black hole is stable.
In this work we have considered a model that includes the interaction of gravity and matter fields with Galilean invariance (the so-called derivative coupling) as well as some corresponding black hole type solutions. Quasinormal perturbations of two kinds of matter fields have been computed by different methods. The effect of the derivative coupling in the quasinormal spectrum has been analyzed and evaluated.
We study the stability under scalar perturbations, and we compute the quasinormal modes of the Einstein-Born-Infeld dilaton spacetime in 1+3 dimensions. Solving the full radial equation in terms of hypergeometric functions, we provide an exact analytical expression for the spectrum. We find that the frequencies are purely imaginary, and we confirm our results by computing them numerically. Although the scalar field that perturbs the black hole is electrically neutral, an instability similar to that seen in charged scalar perturbations of the Reissner-Nordström black hole is observed.
We exactly calculate the quasinormal frequencies of the electromagnetic and Klein-Gordon perturbations propagating in a five-dimensional dilatonic black hole. Furthermore we exactly find the quasinormal frequencies of the massive Dirac field. Using these results we study the linear stability of this black hole. We compare our results for the quasinormal frequencies and for the linear stability of the five-dimensional black hole with those already published.
In this paper, we first investigate the thermal stability of black holes in conformal Weyl gravity with a comparison with the Schwarzschild black holes. Then, we consider a minimally coupled massive scalar perturbation and calculate the quasinormal modes in asymptotically dS spacetime by employing the sixth order WKB approximation and asymptotic iteration method. The deviations from those of the Schwarzschild-dS solutions are obtained and the possibility of the presence of quasi-resonance modes for Weyl black hole solutions is investigated. Finally, we consider a massless scalar perturbation i…
We study z=4 Topological black hole in 4+1 dimensional Horava-Lifshitz gravity and we calculate analytically the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations and from these quasinormal modes we show that z=4 Topological black hole in 4+1 dimensional Horava-Lifshitz gravity is stable.
The study of the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the 2+1 dimensional rotating draining bathtub acoustic black hole, the closest analogue found so far to the Kerr black hole, is performed. Both the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal (QN) frequencies as a function of the rotation parameter B are found through a full non-linear numerical analysis. Since there is no change in sign in the imaginary part of the frequency as B is increased we conclude that the 2+1 dimensional rotating draining bathtub acoustic black hole is stable against small perturbations.
We study the quasinormal mode and stability of optical black holes in moving dielectrics. The results show that the real part of complex frequencies is inversely proportional to but the absolute value of an imaginary part is proportional to a refractive index. We obtain the conditions for forming a black hole horizon in moving dielectrics. Moreover, we investigate the evolution behavior of optical black holes with respect to a refractive index at a high overtone number and find that an optical black hole undergoes one phase transition from an unstable mode to a stable one when the refractive i…
Gravitational lensing in the weak field limit, quasinormal spectra, and gray-body factors are investigated in the Reissner-Nordström spacetime corrected by bounce parameters. Using the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, we analyze the effects of bounce corrections to the weak gravitational deflection angle and find that the divergence of the deflection angle can be suppressed by a bounce correction in the Reissner-Nordström spacetime. We also notice that the bounce correction plays the same role as the Morse potential in the deflection angle. Moreover, we derive the perturbation equations with the spin-dep…
We find quasinormal spectrum of the massive scalar field in the background of the Kerr black holes. We show that all found modes are damped under the quasinormal modes boundary conditions when $μM$ is not large, thereby implying stability of the massive scalar field. This complements the region of stability determined by the Beyer inequality for large masses of the field. We show that, similar to the case of a non-rotating black holes, the massive term of the scalar field does not contribute in the regime of high damping. Thereby, the high damping asymptotic should be the same as for the massl…
In this work we consider the evolution of a massive scalar field in cylindrically symmetric space-times. Quasinormal modes have been calculated for static and rotating cosmic cylinders. We found unstable modes in some cases. Rotating as well as static cosmic strings, i.e., without regular interior solutions, do not display quasinormal oscillation modes. We conclude that rotating cosmic cylinder space-times that present closed time-like curves are unstable against scalar perturbations.
So far analysis of the quasinormal spectrum of a massive charged scalar field in the black hole background has been limited by the regime of small μM and qQ, where μ, q (M, Q) are mass and charge of the field (black hole). Here we shall present a comprehensive picture of quasinormal modes, late-time tails and stability of a massive charged scalar field around Kerr-Newman black holes for any physically meaningful values of the parameters. We shall show that despite presence of the two mechanisms of superradiance (owing to black hole's rotation and charge) and the massive term creating growing b…
Gravitational perturbations in the geometry of asymptotically flat black hole solution in the deformed Hořava-Lifshitz(HL) gravity are considered and the associated quasinormal mode(QNM) frequencies are evaluated using WKB method. Black holes are found to be stable against small perturbations. We also find a significant deviation in the behavior of QNMs in HL theory for low values of HL parameter $ω$, from that in the standard General Relativity(GR). QNMs are long lived in Hořava theory compared with the usual Schwarzschild black hole case.
We study the quasinormal modes of fermionic perturbations for an asymptotically Lifshitz black hole in 4-dimensions with dynamical exponent z=2 and plane topology for the transverse section, and we find analytically and numerically the quasinormal modes for massless fermionic fields by using the improved asymptotic iteration method and the Horowitz-Hubeny method. The quasinormal frequencies are purely imaginary and negative, which guarantees the stability of these black holes under massless fermionic field perturbations. Remarkably, both numerical methods yield consistent results; i.e., both m…
Stability criteria of nearly extreme black holes in the perturbations level is one of the interesting issues in gravitational systems. Considering the nearly extreme conformal-de Sitter black holes, in this paper, we obtain an exact relation for the quasinormal modes of scalar perturbations. As for stability criteria, we find a lower bound on the event horizon radius which is corresponding to an upper bound on the value of the quasinormal frequencies. In addition, we show that the asymptotic behavior of quasinormal modes gives highly damped modes which is important due to possible connection b…
We construct solitary wave solutions in a $1+1$ dimensional massless scalar ($ϕ$) field theory with a specially chosen potential $V(ϕ)$. The equation governing perturbations about this solitary wave has an effective potential which is a simple harmonic well over a region, and a constant beyond. This feature allows us to ensure the stability of the solitary wave through the existence of bound states in the well, which can be found by semi-analytical methods. A further check on stability is performed through our search for quasi-normal modes (QNM) which are defined for purely outgoing boundary c…
We study scalar perturbations in the background of a Topological Lifshitz black hole in four dimensions. We compute analytically the quasinormal modes and from these modes we show that Topological Lifshitz black hole is stable. On the other hand, we compute the reflection and transmission coefficients and the absorption cross section and we show that there is a range of modes with high angular momentum which contributes to the absorption cross section in the low frequency limit. Furthermore, in this limit, we show that the absorption cross section decreases if the scalar field mass increases, …
Respecting the angular momentum conservation of torque-free systems, it is natural to consider rotating solutions of massive objects. Besides that, motivated by the realistic astrophysical black holes that rotate, we use the Newman-Janis formalism to construct a regular rotating black hole. We start with a nonlinearly charged regular static black hole in the framework of the standard general relativity and then obtain the associated rotating solution through such a formalism. We investigate the geometrical properties of the metric by studying the boundary of ergosphere. We also analyze thermod…
Black holes are found to exist in gravitational theories with the presence of quadratic curvature terms and behave differently from the Schwarzschild solution. We present an exhaustive analysis for determining the quasinormal modes of a test scalar field propagating in a new class of black hole backgrounds in the case of pure Einstein-Weyl gravity. Our result shows that the field decay of quasinormal modes in such a non-Schwarzschild black hole behaves similarly to the Schwarzschild one, but the decay slope becomes much smoother due to the appearance of the Weyl tensor square in the background…
We consider the perturbations of the massive vector field around Schwarzschild black hole, (generally, with non-vanishing $Λ$ - term). The monopole massive vector perturbation equations can be reduced to a single wave-like equation. We have proved the stability against these perturbations and investigated the quasinormal spectrum. The quasinormal behaviour for Schwarzschild black hole is quite unexpected: the fundamental mode and all higher overtones shows totally different dependence on the mass of the field $m$: as $m$ is increasing, the damping rate of the fundamental mode is decreasing, wh…
Black hole spectroscopy with gravitational waves is an important tool to measure the mass and spin of astrophysical black holes and to test their Kerr nature. Next-generation ground- and space-based detectors will observe binary black hole mergers with large signal-to-noise ratios and perform spectroscopy routinely. It was recently shown that small perturbations due, e.g., to environmental effects (the "flea") to the effective potential governing gravitational-wave generation and propagation in black hole exteriors (the "elephant") can lead to arbitrarily large changes in the black hole's quas…
We study the stability of black holes that are solutions of the dilaton gravity derived from string-theoretical models in two and five dimensions against to scalar field perturbations, using the Quasinormal Modes (QNMs) approach. In order to find the QNMs corresponding to a black hole geometry, we consider perturbations described by a massive scalar field non-minimally coupled to gravity. We find that the QNM's frequencies turn out to be pure imaginary leading to purely damped modes, that is in agreement with the literature of dilatonic black holes. Our result exhibits the unstable behavior of…
We study the dynamics of test particle and stability of circular geodesics in the gravitational field of a non-commutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild black hole spacetime (NCSBH). The coordinate time Lyapunov exponent ($λ_{c}$) is crucial to investigate the stability of equatorial circular geodesics of massive and massless test particles. The stability or instability of circular orbits are discussed by analysing the variation of Lyapunov exponent with radius of these orbits for different values of non-commutative parameter ($α$). In the case of null circular orbits, the instability expone…
Geodesic motion determines important features of spacetimes. Null unstable geodesics are closely related to the appearance of compact objects to external observers and have been associated with the characteristic modes of black holes. By computing the Lyapunov exponent, which is the inverse of the instability timescale associated with this geodesic motion, we show that, in the eikonal limit, quasinormal modes of black holes in any dimensions are determined by the parameters of the circular null geodesics. This result is independent of the field equations and only assumes a stationary, spherica…
We investigate the numerical stability of accelerated AdS black holes against linear scalar perturbations. In particular, we study the evolution of a probe non-minimally coupled scalar field on Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström AdS black holes with small accelerations by computing the quasinormal modes of the perturbation spectrum. We decompose the scalar field Klein-Gordon equation and study the eigenvalue problem for its angular and radial-temporal parts using different numerical methods. The angular part is written in terms of the Heun solution and expanded through the Frobenius method w…
We study the determination of the mass of a de Sitter-Schwarzschild black hole from one quasinormal mode. We prove a local uniqueness result with a Hölder type stability estimate.
Modifying a method by Horowitz and Hubeny for asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes, we establish the classical stability of the quasinormal modes of the de Sitter spacetime. Furthermore using a straightforward method we calculate the de Sitter quasinormal frequencies of the gravitational perturbations and discuss some properties of the radial functions of these quasinormal modes.
We study the quasinormal modes of scalar field perturbations in the background of non-Abelian hyperscaling violating Lifshitz black holes. We find that the quasinormal frequencies have no real part so there is no oscillatory behavior in the perturbations, only exponential decay, that is, the system is always overdamped, which guarantees the mode stability of non-Abelian hyperscaling violating Lifshitz black holes. We determine analytically the quasinormal modes for massless scalar fields for a dynamical exponent $z=2$ and hyperscaling violating exponent $\tildeθ>-2$. Also, we obtain numericall…
We consider scalar and spinorial perturbations on a background described by a $z=3$ three-dimensional Lifshitz black hole. We obtained the corresponding quasinormal modes which perfectly agree with the analytical result for the quasinormal frequency in the scalar case. The numerical results for the spinorial perturbations reinforce our conclusion on the stability of the model under these perturbations. We also calculate the area spectrum, which prove to be equally spaced, as an application of our results.
The regularization proposed in [D.~Glavan and C.~Lin, Phys.\ Rev.\ Lett.\ {\bf 124}, 081301 (2020)] led to the black hole solutions which turned out to be the solutions of the consistent well-defined $4$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity suggested in [K.~Aoki, M.~Gorji and S.~Mukohyama, arXiv:2005.03859]. Recently the quasinormal modes of bosonic and fermionic fields for this theory were studied. Here we calculate quasinormal frequencies of the test scalar, electromagnetic and Dirac fields for the spherically symmetric black hole in the novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet-de Sit…
We study the quasinormal modes of $p$-form fields in spherical black holes in $D$-dimensions. Using the spherical symmetry of the black holes and gauge symmetry, we show the $p$-form field can be expressed in terms of the coexact $p$-form and the coexact $(p-1)$-form on the sphere $S^{D-2}$. These variables allow us to find the master equations. By utilizing the S-deformation method, we explicitly show the stability of $p$-form fields in the spherical black hole spacetime. Moreover, using the WKB approximation, we calculate the quasinormal modes of the $p$-form fields in $D(\leq10)$-dimensions…
Motivated by the recent interest in the study of the spacetimes that are asymptotically Lifshitz and in order to extend some previous results, we calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of the electromagnetic field in a D-dimensional asymptotically Lifshitz black hole. Based on the values obtained for the quasinormal frequencies we discuss the classical stability of the quasinormal modes. We also study whether the electromagnetic field possesses unstable modes in the D-dimensional Lifshitz spacetime.
We study charged fermionic perturbations in the background of two-dimensional charged Dilatonic black holes, and we present the exact Dirac quasinormal modes. Also, we study the stability of these black holes under charged fermionic perturbations.
Recently a $D$-dimensional regularization approach leading to the non-trivial $(3+1)$-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) effective description of gravity was formulated which was claimed to bypass the Lovelock's theorem and avoid Ostrogradsky instability. Later it was shown that the regularization is possible only for some broad, but limited, class of metrics and Aoki, Gorji and Mukohyama [arXiv:2005.03859] formulated a well-defined four-dimensional EGB theory, which breaks the Lorentz invariance in a theoretically consistent and observationally viable way. The black-hole solution of the …
The resonant mode spectrum of the Kerr-Newman spacetime is presently unknown. These modes, called the quasinormal modes, play a central role in determining the stability of Kerr-Newman black holes and their response to perturbations. We present a new formalism, generalized from time-independent perturbation theory in quantum mechanics, for calculating the quasinormal mode frequencies of weakly charged Kerr-Newman spacetimes of arbitrary spin. Our method makes use of an original technique for applying perturbation theory to zeroth-order solutions that are not square- integrable, and it can be a…
A Kerr-de Sitter black hole is a solution $(M,g_{Λ,\mathfrak{m},\mathfrak{a}})$ of the Einstein vacuum equations with cosmological constant $Λ>0$. It describes a black hole with mass $\mathfrak{m}>0$ and specific angular momentum $\mathfrak{a}\in\mathbb{R}$. We show that for any $ε>0$ there exists $δ>0$ so that mode stability holds for the linear scalar wave equation $\Box_{g_{Λ,\mathfrak{m},\mathfrak{a}}}ϕ=0$ when $|\mathfrak{a}/\mathfrak{m}|\in[0,1-ε]$ and $Λ\mathfrak{m}^2<δ$. In fact, we show that all quasinormal modes $σ$ in any fixed half space $\Imσ>-C\sqrtΛ$ are equal to $0$ or $-i\sqrt…
We calculate exactly the quasinormal frequencies of Klein-Gordon and Dirac test fields propagating in two-dimensional uncharged Achucarro-Ortiz black hole. For both test fields we study whether the quasinormal frequencies are well defined in the massless limit. We use their values to discuss the classical stability of the quasinormal modes in uncharged Achucarro-Ortiz black hole and to check the recently proposed Time Times Temperature bound. Furthermore we extend some of these results to the charged Achucarro-Ortiz black hole.
We study for the first time the stability against scalar perturbations, and we compute the spectrum of quasinormal modes of three-dimensional charged black holes in Einstein-power-Maxwell non-linear electrodynamics assuming running couplings. Adopting the 6th order WKB approximation we investigate how the running of the couplings change the spectrum of the classical theory. Our results show that all modes corresponding to non-vanishing angular momentum are unstable both in the classical theory and with the running of the couplings, while the fundamental mode can be stable or unstable depending…
Under the hypothesis of asymptotic safety of gravity, the static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the infrared limit are corrected by non-perturbative effects. Specifically, the metric is modified by the running of gravitational couplings. In this work, we investigate the effects of this correction to the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a test scalar field propagating in this kind of black hole background analytically and numerically. It is found that although the quasi-period frequencies and the damping of oscillations are respectively enhanced and weakened by the quantum correction…
We study charged massless fermionic perturbations in the background of $4$-dimensional linear dilaton black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory with double Liouville-type potentials. We present the analytical fermionic quasinormal modes, whose Dirac equations are solved in terms of hypergeometric functions. We also discuss the stability of these black holes under the charged fermionic perturbations.
We study the holographic duals of bosonic and fermionic fields and compute their Quasinormal Frequencies (QNF) by exploiting that they are massive charged fields in $\mathrm{AdS_2 \times \mathcal{K}}$. In particular, we assess the stability of the scalar and fermionic operators in Myers-Perry's black holes with equal angular momenta. We compute the central charge and the Hawking-entropy and introduce extremality parameters to determine the properties of the dual CFT. Then, we briefly discuss how detection of Spin-2 fields can pave the way for more deep understanding of the holographic principl…
In this work, we probe the stability of a $z=3$ three-dimensional Lifshitz black hole by using scalar and spinorial perturbations. We found an analytical expression for the quasinormal frequencies of the scalar probe field, which perfectly agree with the behavior of the quasinormal modes obtained numerically. The results for the numerical analysis of the spinorial perturbations reinforce the conclusion of the scalar analysis, i.e., the model is stable under scalar and spinor perturbations. As an application we found the area spectrum of the Lifshitz black hole, which turns out to be equally sp…
We provide strong evidence that, up to $99.999\%$ of extremality, Kerr-Newman black holes (KN BHs) are linear mode stable within Einstein-Maxwell theory. We derive and solve, numerically, a coupled system of two PDEs for two gauge invariant fields that describe the most general linear perturbations of a KN BH (except for trivial modes that shift the parameters of the solution). We determine the quasinormal mode (QNM) spectrum of the KN BH as a function of its three parameters and find no unstable modes. In addition, we find that the QNMs that are connected continuously to the gravitational $\e…
We investigate the stability of both timelike as well as null circular geodesics in the vicinity of a dual (3+1) dimensional stringy black hole (BH) spacetime by using an excellent tool so-called Lyapunov exponent. The proper time ($τ$) Lyapunov exponent ($λ_{p}$) and coordinate time ($t$) Lyapunov exponent~($λ_{c}$) are explicitly derived to analyze the stability of equatorial circular geodesics for the stringy BH spacetime with \emph{electric charge} parameter ($α$) and \emph{magnetic charge} parameter~($Q$). By computing these exponents for both the cases of BH spacetime, it is observed tha…
