Magnetic spots on low-mass stars can be traced and characterised using multi-band photometric light curves. Here we analyse an extensive data set for one active star, V1598Cyg, a known variable K dwarf which is either pre-main sequence and/or in a close binary system. Our light curve contains 2854 photometric data points, mostly in $V$, $R_c$, $I_c$, but also in $U$, $B$ and $Hα$, with a total baseline of about 4yr, obtained with small telescopes as part of the HOYS project. We find that V1598Cyg is a very fast rotator with a period of 0.8246 days and varying amplitudes in all filters, best explained as a signature of strong magnetic activity and spots. We fit the photometric amplitudes in $V$, $R_c$, $I_c$ and use them to estimate spot properties, using a grid-based method that is also propagating uncertainties. We verify the method on a partial data set with high cadence and all five broad-band filters. The method yields spot temperatures and fractional spot coverage with typical uncertainties of 100K and 3-4%, respectively. V1598Cyg consistently exhibits spots that are a few hundred degrees warmer than the photosphere, most likely indicating that the light curve is dominated by chromospheric plage. The spot activity varies over our observing baseline, with a typical time scale of 0.5-1yr, which we interpret as the typical spot lifetime. Combining our light curve with archival data, we find a six year cycle in the average brightness, that is probably a sign of a magnetic activity cycle.
We present a temperature and a magnetic-field surface map of the K2 subgiant of the active binary II Peg. Employed are high resolution Stokes IV spectra obtained with the new Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument (PEPSI) at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). Our main result is that the temperature features on II Peg closely correlate with its magnetic field topology. We find a warm spot (350K warmer with respect to the effective temperature) of positive polarity and radial field density of 1.1 kG coexisting with a cool spot (780K cooler) of negative polarity of 2 kG. Seve…
We present measurements of spot properties on 31 young stellar objects, based on multi-band data from the HOYS (Hunting Outbursting Young Stars) project. On average the analysis for each object is based on 270 data points during 80 days in at least 3 bands. All the young low-mass stars in our sample show periodic photometric variations. We determine spot temperatures and coverage by comparing the measured photometric amplitudes in optical bands with simulated amplitudes based on atmosphere models, including a complete error propagation. 21 objects in our sample feature cool spots, with spot te…
The paper describes the modelling of the structure and spectra of the hot accretion spots on the surface of young stars with taking into account departures from LTE for hydrogen and helium. It has been found that the existence of the ram pressure of the in-falling gas at the outer boundary of the hot spot leads to the Stark broadening of the hydrogen line profiles up to FWHM of about 1000 km/s at the considered accretion parameters. It is shown that taking into account departures from LTE for atoms and ions of carbon and oxygen does not lead to noticeable changes in the structure of the hot sp…
Based on our photometric observations in 2015-2016 and archival photometric data for the active red giant PZ Mon, we have found the main characteristics of the stellar surface: the unspotted surface temperature Teff=4730K, the spot temperature Tspot=3500K, and the relative spot area from 30 to 40%. The best agreement with the observations has been achieved in our three-spot model including a cool polar spot with a temperature of about 3500K as well as large and small warm spots with a temperature of about 4500K. The stable polar spot is responsible for the long-period brightness variations. It…
Based on the multiband (BVRIJHKL) photometric observations of the active red giant PZ Mon performed for the first time in the winter season of 2017-2018, we have determined the main characteristics of the spotted stellar surface in a parametric three-spot model. The unspotted surface temperature is Teff=4730 K, the temperature of the cool spots is Tspot=3500 K, their relative area is about 41%, and the temperature of the warm spots is Twarm=4500 K with a maximum relative area up to 20%. The distribution of spots over the stellar surface has been modeled. The warm spots have been found to be di…
We present far-red, intermediate resolution spectroscopy of 572 photometrically selected, low-mass stars (0.2<M/M_sun<0.7) in the young open cluster NGC 2516, using the FLAMES spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. Precise radial velocities confirm membership for 210 stars that have published rotation periods from spot-modulated light curves and for another 144 stars in which periodic modulation could not be found. The two sub-samples are compared and no significant differences are found between their positions in colour-magnitude diagrams, the distribution of their projected equatorial vel…
Starspots are important manifestations of stellar magnetic activity. By studying their behaviour in young solar analogues, we can unravel the properties of their magnetic cycles. This gives crucial information of the underlying dynamo process. Comparisons with the solar cycle enable us to infer knowledge about how the solar dynamo has evolved during the Sun's lifetime. Here we study the correlation between photometric brightness variations, spottedness and mean temperature in V889 Her, a young solar analogue. Our data covers 18 years of spectroscopic and 25 years of photometric observations. W…
We present high-resolution optical spectra of the young brown-dwarf eclipsing binary 2M0535-05, obtained during eclipse of the higher-mass (primary) brown dwarf. Combined with our previous spectrum of the primary alone (Paper I), the new observations yield the spectrum of the secondary alone. We investigate, through a differential analysis of the two binary components, whether cool surface spots are responsible for suppressing the temperature of the primary. In Paper I, we found a significant discrepancy between the empirical surface gravity of the primary and that inferred via fine analysis o…
We studied the weak-lined T Tauri star Hubble 4, a known long-period binary, and its starspot phenomena. We used optical radial velocity (RV) data taken over a span of 14 years (2004-2010, 2017-2019) at the McDonald Observatory 2.7m Harlan J. Smith telescope and single epoch imaging from the HST/WFC3 instrument. The observed and apparent RV variations show contributions, respectively, from the binary motion as well as from a large spot group on one of the stars, presumed to be the primary. Fitting and removing the orbital signal from the RVs, we found the lower bound on the lifetime of a previ…
By studying young magnetically active late-type stars, i.e. analogues to the young Sun, one can draw conclusions on the evolution of the solar dynamo. We determine the topology of the surface magnetic field and study the relation between the magnetic field and cool photospheric spots in three young late-type stars. High-resolution spectropolarimetry of the targets were obtained with the HARPSpol instrument mounted at the ESO 3.6 m telescope. The signal-to-noise ratio of the Stokes IV measurements were boosted by combining the signal from a large number of spectroscopic absorption lines through…
The continuous temporal coverage and high photometric precision afforded by space observatories has opened up new opportunities for the study of variability processes in young stellar cluster members. Of particular interest is the phenomenon of deuterium-burning pulsation in brown dwarfs and very-low-mass stars, whose existence on 1-4 hours timescales has been proposed but not yet borne out by observations. To investigate short-timescale variability in young, low-mass objects, we carried out high-precision, high-cadence time series monitoring with the Warm Spitzer mission on 14 low mass stars …
We present a multi-epoch spectroscopic study of LkCa 4, a heavily spotted non-accreting T Tauri star. Using SpeX at NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), 12 spectra were collected over five consecutive nights, spanning $\approx$ 1.5 stellar rotations. Using the IRTF SpeX Spectral Library, we constructed empirical composite models of spotted stars by combining a warmer (photosphere) standard star spectrum with a cooler (spot) standard weighted by the spot filling factor, $f_{spot}$. The best-fit models spanned two photospheric component temperatures, $T_{phot}$ = 4100 K (K7V) and 4400 K (K…
We present the results of contemporaneous spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the young solar-type star HD171488 (Prot~1.337 d) aimed at studying surface inhomogeneities at photospheric/chromospheric levels. Echelle FOCES spectra (R~40000) and Johnson photometry have been performed in 2006. Spectral type, rotational velocity, metallicity, and gravity were determined using a code developed by us. The metallicity was measured from the analysis of iron lines. The spectral subtraction technique was applied to the most relevant chromospheric diagnostics included in the FOCES spectral range …
Continuous photometric observations of five young stars obtained by the MOST satellite in 2009 and 2010 in the Taurus and Lupus star formation regions are presented. Using light curve modelling under the assumption of internal invariability of spots, we obtained small values of the solar-type differential-rotation parameter (k=0.0005-0.009) for three spotted weak-line T Tau stars, V410 Tau, V987 Tau and Lupus 3-14; for another spotted WTTS, Lupus 3-48, the data are consistent with a rigidly rotating surface (k=0). Three flares of similar rise (4 min 30 sec) and decay (1 h 45 min) times were de…
By combining rotation periods with spectroscopic determinations of projected rotation velocity, Jackson, Jeffries & Maxted (2009) have found that the mean radii for low-mass M-dwarfs in the young, open cluster NGC 2516 are larger than model predictions at a given absolute I magnitude or I - K color and also larger than measured radii of magnetically inactive M-dwarfs. The relative radius difference is correlated with magnitude, increasing from a few per cent at MI = 7 to greater than 50 per cent for the lowest luminosity stars in their sample at MI about 9.5. Jackson et al (2009) have suggeste…
The origin and heating mechanisms of warm (50<T<200 K) molecular gas in low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs) are strongly debated. Both passive heating of the inner collapsing envelope by the protostellar luminosity as well as active heating by shocks and by UV associated with the outflows or accretion have been proposed. We aim to characterize the warm gas within protosteller objects, and disentangle contributions from the (inner) envelope, bipolar outflows and the quiescent cloud. High-J CO maps (12CO J=6--5 and 7--6) of the immediate surroundings (up to 10,000 AU) of eight low-mass YSOs ar…
Our aim is investigating surface inhomogeneities of the young late-type star SAO51891, from photosphere to upper chromosphere, analyzing contemporaneous high-resolution spectra and broad-band photometry. The FOCES@CAHA spectral range is used to determine spectral classification and derive vsini and Vrad. The Li abundance is measured to estimate the age. The BVRIJHKs bands are used to construct the SED. The variations of our BV fluxes and Teff are used to infer the presence of photospheric spots and observe their behavior over time. The chromospheric activity is studied applying the spectral su…
The properties of accretion disks around stars and brown dwarfs in the SOri cluster (age 3 Myr) are studied based on NIR time series photometry supported by MIR spectral energy distributions. We monitor ~30 young low-mass sources over 8 nights in the J- and K-band using the duPont telescope at Las Campanas. We find three objects showing variability with J-band amplitudes >0.5 mag; five additional objects exhibit low-level variations. All three highly variable sources have been previously identified as highly variable; thus we establish the long-term nature of their flux changes. The lightcurve…
The effects of external irradiation on the chemistry and physics in the protostellar envelope around low-mass young stellar objects are poorly understood. The Corona Australis star-forming region contains the R CrA dark cloud, comprising several low-mass protostellar cores irradiated by an intermediate-mass young star. We study the effects on the warm gas and dust in a group of low-mass young stellar objects from the irradiation by the young luminous Herbig Be star R CrA. Herschel/PACS far-infrared datacubes of two low-mass star-forming regions in the R CrA dark cloud are presented. The distri…
We present high-resolution Keck optical spectra of the very young substellar eclipsing binary 2MASS J05352184-0546085, obtained during eclipse of the lower-mass (secondary) brown dwarf. The observations yield the spectrum of the higher-mass (primary) brown dwarf alone, with negligible (~1.6%) contamination by the secondary. We perform a simultaneous fine-analysis of the TiO-epsilon band and the red lobe of the KI doublet, using state-of-the-art PHOENIX Dusty and Cond synthetic spectra. Comparing the effective temperature and surface gravity derived from these fits to the {\it empirically} dete…
One-dimensional stellar evolution models have been successful at representing the structure and evolution of stars in diverse astrophysical contexts, but complications have been noted in the context of young, magnetically active stars, as well as close binary stars with significant tidal interactions. Numerous puzzles are associated with pre-main sequence and active main-sequence stars, relating to their radii, their colors, certain elemental abundances, and the coevality of young clusters, among others. A promising explanation for these puzzles is the distorting effects of magnetic activity a…
Classical main-sequence chemically peculiar stars show light variability that originates in surface abundance spots. In the spots, the flux redistribution due to line (bound-bound) and bound-free transitions is modulated by stellar rotation and leads to light variability. White dwarfs and hot subdwarfs may also have surface abundance spots either owing to the elemental diffusion or as a result of accretion of debris. We model the light variability of typical white dwarfs and hot subdwarfs that results from putative surface abundance spots. We show that the spots with radiatively supported iron…
Observations of the magnetic fields of young solar-type stars provide a way to investigate the signatures of their magnetic activity and dynamos. Spectropolarimetry enables the study of these stellar magnetic fields and was thus employed at the Télescope Bernard Lyot and the Anglo-Australian Telescope to investigate two moderately rotating young Sun-like stars, namely HD 35296 (V119 Tau, HIP 25278) and HD 29615 (HIP 21632). The results indicate that both stars display rotational variation in chromospheric indices consistent with their spot activity, with variations indicating a probable long-t…
Although all-sky surveys have led to the discovery of dozens of young planets, little is known about their atmospheres. Here, we present multi-wavelength transit data for the super Neptune-sized exoplanet, K2-33b -- the youngest (~10 Myr) transiting exoplanet to-date. We combined photometric observations of K2-33 covering a total of 33 transits spanning >2 years, taken from K2, MEarth, Hubble, and Spitzer. The transit photometry spanned from the optical to the near-infrared (0.6-4.5$μ$m), enabling us to construct a transmission spectrum of the planet. We find that the optical transit depths ar…
The chemical composition of gas and ice in disks around young stars set the bulk composition of planets. In contrast to protoplanetary disks (Class II), young disks that are still embedded in their natal envelope (Class 0 and I) are predicted to be too warm for CO to freeze out, as has been confirmed observationally for L1527 IRS. To establish whether young disks are generally warmer than their more evolved counterparts, we observed five young (Class 0/I and Class I) disks in Taurus with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), targeting C$^{17}$O $2-1$, H$_2$CO $3_{1,2}-2_{1,1…
Aiming to detect planetary companions to young stars with debris disks via the radial velocity method, we observed HD114082 during April 2018 - August 2022 as one of the targets of our RVSPY program (Radial Velocity Survey for Planets around Young stars). We used the FEROS spectrograph, mounted to the MPG/ESO 2.2 m telescope in Chile, to obtain high signal-to-noise spectra and time series of precise radial velocities (RVs). Additionally, we analyzed archival HARPS spectra and TESS photometric data. We used the CERES, CERES++ and SERVAL pipelines to derive RVs and activity indicators and ExoStr…
We present a detailed study of the two Sun-like stars KIC 7985370 and KIC 7765135, aimed at determining their activity level, spot distribution, and differential rotation. Both stars were discovered by us to be young stars and were observed by the NASA Kepler mission. The stellar parameters (vsini, spectral type, Teff, log g, and [Fe/H]) were derived from optical spectroscopy which allowed us also to study the chromospheric activity from the emission in the core of Hα and CaII IRT lines. The high-precision Kepler photometric data spanning over 229 days were then fitted with a robust spot model…
We present a spectroscopic/photometric analysis of the rapid rotator KIC8429280, discovered by ourselves as a very young star and observed by the Kepler mission. We use spectroscopic/photometric ground-based data to derive stellar parameters, and we adopt a spectral subtraction technique to highlight the chromospheric emission in the cores of Halpha, CaII H&K and IRT lines. We fit a robust spot model to the high-precision Kepler photometry spanning 138 days. Model selection and parameter estimation is performed in a Bayesian manner using a Markov chain Monte Carlo method. We find that KIC84292…
Observations and modelling of stars with near-solar masses in their early phases of evolution is critical for a better understanding of how dynamos of solar-type stars evolve. We examine the chemical composition and the spot distribution of the pre-main-sequence solar analogue EK Dra. Using spectra from the HERMES Spectrograph (La Palma), we obtain the abundances of 23 elements with respect to the solar ones, which lead to a $[{\rm Fe/H}]=0.03$, with significant overabundance of Li and Ba. The s-process elements Sr, Y, and Ce are marginally overabundant, while Co, Ni, Cu, Zn are marginally def…
Results of measurements of the longitudinal magnetic field in a hot accretion spot in three classical T Tauri stars (CTTS) are presented. The magnetic field in the formation region of the narrow component of the emission line HeI 5876 Å was found for each star in our sample at a level of more than 2σ. In case of DS Tau we have found the field in the narrow components of NaI D lines, which was equal to +0.8 \pm 0.3 kG, i.e. it was equal to the field measured on the narrow component of HeI 5876 Å. Our results indicate that the magnetic field in the hot spots can be studied for CTTS down to 13^m …
Star clusters are known as superb tools for understanding stellar evolution. In a quest for understanding the physical origin of magnetism and chemical peculiarity in about 7% of the massive main-sequence stars, we analysed two of the ten brightest members of the ~10 Myr old Galactic open cluster NGC 2264, the early B-dwarfs HD47887 and HD47777. We find accurate rotation periods of 1.95 and 2.64 days, respectively, from MOST photometry. We obtained ESPaDOnS spectropolarimetric observations, through which we determined stellar parameters, detailed chemical surface abundances, projected rotation…
Aims: We investigate magnetic tracers in the photosphere and the chromosphere of the ultra-rapid rotator ($P\sim0.32d$) V530 Per, a cool member of the open cluster $α$ Persei, to characterize the short-term variability of the magnetic activity and large-scale magnetic field of this prototypical young, rapidly rotating solar-like star. Methods: With time-resolved spectropolarimetric observations spread over four close-by nights, we reconstructed the brightness distribution and large-scale magnetic field geometry of V530 Per through Zeeman-Doppler imaging. Simultaneously, we estimated the short-…
Context. The study of young solar type stars is fundamental for a better understanding of the magnetic activity of the Sun. As a planet in transit crosses in front of its host star, a darkspot on the stellar surface may be occulted, causing a detectable variation in the light curve. Kepler-63 is a young solar-like star withan age of only 210 Myr that exhibit photometric variations compatible with spot signatures. Since its orbiting planet is in an almostpolar orbit, different latitudes of the star can be probed by the method of spot transit mapping. Methods. A total of 150 transits of Kepler-6…
Recent radio astronomical observations have revealed that HC$_{5}$N, the second shortest cyanopolyyne (HC$_{2n+1}$N), is abundant around some massive young stellar objects (MYSOs), which is not predicted by classical carbon-chain chemistry. For example, the observed HC$_{5}$N abundance toward the G28.28$-$0.36 MYSO is higher than that in L1527, which is one of the warm carbon chain chemistry (WCCC) sources, by more than one order of magnitude (Taniguchi et al., 2017). In this paper, we present chemical simulations of hot-core models with a warm-up period using the astrochemical code Nautilus. …
Astrometry from Gaia will measure the positions of stellar photometric centroids to unprecedented precision. We show that the precision of Gaia astrometry is sufficient to detect starspot-induced centroid jitter for nearby stars in the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) sample with magnetic activity similar to the young G-star KIC 7174505 or the active M4 dwarf GJ 1243, but is insufficient to measure centroid jitter for stars with Sun-like spot distributions. We simulate Gaia observations of stars with 10 year activity cycles to search for evidence of activity cycles, and find that Gaia as…
We present simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic observations of seven young and highly variable M dwarfs in star forming regions in Orion, conducted in 4 observing nights with FORS2 at ESO/VLT. All seven targets show significant photometric variability in the I-band, with amplitudes between 0.1-0.8 mag, The spectra, however, remain remarkably constant, with spectral type changes less than 0.5 subtypes. Thus, the brightness changes are not caused by veiling that 'fills in' absorption features. Three objects in the $σ$ Ori cluster (age $\sim$3 Myr) exhibit strong H$α$ emission and H$α$ var…
Doppler Imaging of starspots on young solar analogues is a way to investigate the early history of solar magnetic activity by proxy. Doppler images of young G-dwarfs have yielded the presence of large polar spots, extending to moderate latitudes, along with measurements of the surface differential rotation. The differential rotation measurement for one star (RX J0850.1- 7554) suggests it is possibly the first example of a young G-type dwarf whose surface rotates as almost a solid body, in marked contrast to the differential rotation of other rapidly rotating young G-dwarfs and the present-day …
We study a sample of 21 young and active solar-type stars with spectral types ranging from late F to mid K and characterize the behaviour of their activity. We apply the continuous period search (CPS) time series analysis method on 16 to 27 years of photometry to estimate the surface differential rotation and determine the existence and behaviour of active longitudes and activity cycles on the stars. We supplement the time series results by calculating new $\log{R'_{\rm HK}}$ emission indices for the stars from high resolution spectroscopy. The photometric rotation period variations reveal a p…
The main goal of this work is to characterize the mass accretion and ejection processes of the classical T Tauri star V354 Mon, a member of the young stellar cluster NGC 2264. In March 2008, photometric and spectroscopic observations of V354 Mon were obtained simultaneously with the CoRoT satellite, the 60 cm telescope at the Observatório Pico dos Dias (LNA - Brazil) equipped with a CCD camera and Johnson/Cousins BVRI filters, and the SOPHIE échelle spectrograph at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence (CNRS - France). The light curve of V354 Mon shows periodical minima (P = 5.26 +/- 0.50 days) t…
We present a multiwavelength investigation of a region of a nearby giant molecular cloud that is distinguished by a minimal level of star formation activity. With our new 12CO(J=2-1) and 13CO(J=2-1) observations of a remote region within the middle of the California molecular cloud, we aim to investigate the relationship between filaments, cores, and a molecular outflow in a relatively pristine environment. An extinction map of the region from Herschel Space Observatory observations reveals the presence of two 2-pc-long filaments radiating from a high-extinction clump. Using the 13CO observati…

Cool spots on the surface of magnetically-active stars modulate their observed brightnesses and temperatures, thereby affecting the stellar locus on the H-R diagram. Recent high precision space-based photometric surveys reveal the rotational modulation from spots on stars in young clusters, including K2 monitoring of the 125-Myr-old Pleiades cluster. However, lightcurves reveal only the asymmetries in the visible spot distributions rather than the total sizes of spots on stellar surfaces, which causes a discrepancy between the spot coverage measured by photometric and spectroscopic observation…
We report the detection of V1298 Tau b, a warm Jupiter-sized planet ($R_P$ = 0.91 $\pm$ 0.05~ $R_\mathrm{Jup}$, $P = 24.1$ days) transiting a young solar analog with an estimated age of 23 million years. The star and its planet belong to Group 29, a young association in the foreground of the Taurus-Auriga star-forming region. While hot Jupiters have been previously reported around young stars, those planets are non-transiting and near-term atmospheric characterization is not feasible. The V1298 Tau system is a compelling target for follow-up study through transmission spectroscopy and Doppler …
DQ Tau is a young low-mass spectroscopic binary, consisting of two almost equal-mass stars on a 15.8 d period surrounded by a circumbinary disk. Here, we analyze DQ Tau's light curves obtained by Kepler K2, the Spitzer Space Telescope, and ground-based facilities. We observed variability phenomena, including rotational modulation by stellar spots, brief brightening events due to stellar flares, long brightening events around periastron due to increased accretion, and short dips due to brief circumstellar obscuration. The rotational modulation appears as sinusoidal variation with a period of 3.…
We explore UV and optical variability signatures for several hundred members of NGC 2264 (3 Myr). We performed simultaneous u- and r-band monitoring over two full weeks with CFHT/MegaCam. About 750 young stars are probed; 40% of them are accreting. Statistically distinct variability properties are observed for accreting and non-accreting cluster members. The accretors exhibit a significantly higher level of variability than the non-accretors, especially in the UV. The amount of u-band variability correlates statistically with UV excess in disk-bearing objects, which suggests that accretion and…
Magnetic fields and mass accretion processes create dark and bright spots on the surface of young stars. These spots manifest as surface thermal inhomogeneities, which alter the global temperature measured on the stars. To understand the effects and implications of these starspots, we conducted a large iSHELL high-resolution infrared spectroscopic survey of T Tauri stars in Taurus-Auriga and Ophiuchus star-forming regions. From the K band spectra, we measured stellar temperatures and magnetic field strengths using a magnetic radiative transfer code. We compared our infrared-derived parameters …
The magnetic fields, activity and dynamos of young solar-type stars can be empirically studied using time-series of spectropolarimetric observations and tomographic imaging techniques such as Doppler imaging and Zeeman Doppler imaging. In this paper we use these techniques to study the young Sun-like star EK Draconis (Sp-Type: G1.5V, HD 129333) using ESPaDOnS at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and NARVAL at the Tèlescope Bernard Lyot. This multi-epoch study runs from late 2006 until early 2012. We measure high levels of chromospheric activity indicating an active, and varying, chromosphere.…
AU Mic is a young, active star whose transiting planet was recently detected. We report our analysis of its TESS data, where we modeled the BY Draconis type quasi-periodic rotational modulation by starspots simultaneously to the flaring activity and planetary transits. We measured a flare occurrence rate of 6.35 flares per day for flares with amplitudes in the range of $0.06\% < f_{\rm max} < 1.5\%$ of the star flux. We employed a Bayesian MCMC analysis to model the five transits of AU Mic b, improving the constraints on the planetary parameters. The planet radius of $4.07\pm0.17$~R$_{\oplus}$…
We use the spectra of Pleiades and field stars from LAMOST DR2 archive to study how spottedness and activity vary as a function of mass at young ages. We obtained standard TiO band strength by measuring TiO bands near 7050 $Å$ from LAMOST spectra (R$\approx$1800) for large sample of field GKM dwarfs with solar metallicity. Analysis show that active dwarfs, including late G- and early K-type, have extra TiO absorption compare to inactive counterparts, indicating the presence of cool spots on their surface. Active late K- and M-dwarfs show deeper TiO2 and shallower TiO4 compare to inactive stars…
We present new far-ultraviolet observations of the young M8 brown dwarf 2MASS J12073346-3932539, which is surrounded by an accretion disk. The data were obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope-Cosmic Origins Spectrograph. Moderate resolution spectra (R~17,000-18,000) obtained in the 1150-1750 A and 2770-2830 A bandpasses reveal H2 emission excited by HI Ly$α$ photons, several ionization states of carbon (CI - CIV), and hot gas emission lines of HeII and NV (T ~ 10^4-5 K). Emission from some species that would be found in a typical thermal plasma at this temperature (SiII, SiIII, SiIV, and Mg…
In this paper we investigate the robustness of age measurements, age spreads, and stellar models in young pre-main sequence stars. For this effort, we study a young cluster, $λ$ Orionis, within the Orion star-forming complex. We use Gaia data to derive a sample of 357 targets with spectroscopic temperatures from spectral types or from the automated spectroscopic pipeline in APOGEE Net. After accounting for systematic offsets between the spectral type and APOGEE temperature systems, the derived properties of stars on both systems are consistent. The complex ISM, with variable local extinction, …
