Our aim is investigating surface inhomogeneities of the young late-type star SAO51891, from photosphere to upper chromosphere, analyzing contemporaneous high-resolution spectra and broad-band photometry. The FOCES@CAHA spectral range is used to determine spectral classification and derive vsini and Vrad. The Li abundance is measured to estimate the age. The BVRIJHKs bands are used to construct the SED. The variations of our BV fluxes and Teff are used to infer the presence of photospheric spots and observe their behavior over time. The chromospheric activity is studied applying the spectral subtraction technique to Halpha, CaII H&K, Heps, and CaII IRT lines. We find SAO51891 to be a young K0-1V star with Li abundance close to the Pleiades upper envelope, confirming its youth (~100 Myr), also inferred from its kinematical membership to the Local Association. We detect no IR excess from SED analysis, and rotational modulation of luminosity, Teff, CaII, and Heps total fluxes. A spot model with two active regions, ~240 K cooler than the surrounding photosphere, fits our light/Teff curves, and reproduces the small-amplitude Vrad variations. The anti-correlation of light curves and chromospheric diagnostics indicates plages spatially associated with spots. The large amplitude observed in the Heps-flux curve suggests that this line is very sensitive to the plage presence. Finally, SAO51891 is a young active star, lacking significant amounts of circumstellar dust or any evidence for low mass companions. The spots turn out to be larger and warmer than those in less active MS stars. The Vrad variation produced by spots has an amplitude comparable with those induced by Jupiter-mass planets orbiting close to the star. SAO51891 is a good example of star where the detection of planets may be hampered by the high activity level.

JWST/NIRCam Imaging of Young Stellar Objects. II. Deep Constraints on Giant Planets and a Planet Candidate Outside of the Spiral Disk Around SAO 206462
To improve the census of the Upper Sco association (~11 Myr, ~145 pc), we have identified candidate members using parallaxes, proper motions, and color-magnitude diagrams from several wide-field imaging surveys and have obtained optical and infrared spectra of several hundred candidates to measure their spectral types and assess their membership. We also have performed spectroscopy on a smaller sample of previously known or suspected members to refine their spectral types and evidence of membership. We have classified 530 targets as members of Upper Sco, 377 of which lack previous spectroscopy…
We report chemical abundances of 14 young $α$-rich stars including neutron-capture elements based on high-quality optical spectra from HIRES/Keck I and differential line-by-line analysis. From the comparison of the abundance patterns of young $α$-rich stars to those of nearby bright red giants with a similar metallicity range ($-0.7<[\mathrm{Fe/H}]<-0.2$), we confirm their high $α$-element abundances reported by previous studies based on near-infrared spectroscopy. We reveal for the first time low abundances of $s$-process elements and high abundances of $r$-process elements. All the abundance…
We present new radial velocity (RV) measurements for 11 candidate young very-low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, with spectral types from M7 to L7. Candidate young objects were identified by features indicative of low surface gravity in their optical and/or near-infrared spectra. RV measurements are derived from high resolution (R=$λ$/$Δλ$=20,000) $J$ band spectra taken with NIRSPEC at the Keck Observatory. We combine RVs with proper motions and trigonometric distances to calculate three-dimensional space positions and motions and to evaluate membership probabilities for nearby young moving group…
A detailed investigation of the magnetic properties of young Sun-like stars can provide valuable information on our Sun's magnetic past and its impact on the early Earth. We determine the properties of the moderately rotating young Sun-like star kappa Ceti's magnetic and activity cycles using 50 years of chromospheric activity data and six epochs of spectropolarimetric observations. The chromospheric activity was determined by measuring the flux in the Ca II H and K lines. A generalised Lomb-Scargle periodogram and a wavelet decomposition were used on the chromospheric activity data to establi…
We study the three dimensional arrangement of young stars in the solar neighbourhood using the second release of the Gaia mission (Gaia DR2) and we provide a new, original view of the spatial configuration of the star forming regions within 500 pc from the Sun. By smoothing the star distribution through a gaussian filter, we construct three dimensional density maps for early-type stars (upper-main sequence, UMS) and pre-main sequence (PMS) sources. The PMS and the UMS samples are selected through a combination of photometric and astrometric criteria. A side product of the analysis is a three d…
Starspots are important manifestations of stellar magnetic activity. By studying their behaviour in young solar analogues, we can unravel the properties of their magnetic cycles. This gives crucial information of the underlying dynamo process. Comparisons with the solar cycle enable us to infer knowledge about how the solar dynamo has evolved during the Sun's lifetime. Here we study the correlation between photometric brightness variations, spottedness and mean temperature in V889 Her, a young solar analogue. Our data covers 18 years of spectroscopic and 25 years of photometric observations. W…
Recent analyses of Gaia data have provided direct evidence that most young stellar clusters are in a state of expansion, with velocities of the order of ~0.5 km/s. Traditionally, expanding young clusters have been pictured as entities that became unbound due to the lack of gravitational binding once the gas from the parental cloud that formed the cluster has been expelled by the stellar radiation of the massive stars in the cluster. In the present contribution, we used radiation-magnetohydrodynamic numerical simulations of molecular cloud formation and evolution to understand how stellar clust…
The origin of young star clusters represents a major challenge for modern stellar astrophysics. While stellar rotation partially explains the colour spread observed along main-sequence turn-offs, i.e. where stars leave the main-sequence after the exhaustion of hydrogen in their core, and the multiple main sequences in the colour-magnitude diagrams of stellar systems younger than approximately 2 Gyr, it appears that an age difference may still be required to fulfill the observational constraints. Here we introduce an alternative approach that exploits the main-sequence turn-on, i.e. the point a…
We investigate the planetary transit detectability in the presence of stellar rotational activity from light curves for young M-dwarfs and estimate improvements of the detection at near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths. Making maps of the transit signal detection efficiency over the orbital period and planetary radius with light curves of members of four clusters, Hyades, Praesepe, Pleiades, and Upper Scorpius observed by the K2 mission, we evaluate the detectability for the rotation period and modulation semi-amplitude. We find that the detection efficiency remarkably decreases to about 20% for rap…
We analyze the membership probability of young stars belonging to nearby moving groups with $\textit{Gaia}$ DR2 data. The sample of 1429 stars were identified from 'The Catalog of Suspected Nearby Young Moving Group Stars'. Good-quality parallax and proper motion values were retrieved for 890 stars from $\textit{Gaia}$ DR2 database. The analysis for membership probability is performed in the framework of LACEwING algorithm. From the analysis it is confirmed that 279 stars do not belong to any of the known moving groups. We estimated the $\textit{ U, V, W}$ space velocity values for 250 moving …
The search of close (a<=5 au) giant planet(GP) companions with radial velocity(RV) around young stars and the estimate of their occurrence rates is important to constrain the migration timescales. Furthermore, this search will allow the giant planet occurrence rates to be computed at all separations via the combination with direct imaging techniques. The RV search around young stars is a challenge as they are generally faster rotators than older stars of similar spectral types and they exhibit signatures of spots or pulsation in their RV time series. Specific analyses are necessary to characte…
We report the discovery of the youngest brown dwarf with a disk at 102 pc from the Sun, WISEA~J120037.79-784508.3 (W1200-7845), via the Disk Detective citizen science project. We establish that W1200-7845 is located in the 3.7$\substack{+4.6 \\ -1.4}$ Myr-old $\varepsilon$~Cha association. Its spectral energy distribution (SED) exhibits clear evidence of an infrared (IR) excess, indicative of the presence of a warm circumstellar disk. Modeling this warm disk, we find the data are best fit using a power-law description with a slope $α= -0.94$, which suggests it is a young, Class II type disk. U…
Intermediate mass stars (IMSs) represent the link between low-mass and high-mass stars and cover a key mass range for giant planet formation. In this paper, we present a spectroscopic survey of 241 young IMS candidates with IR-excess, the most complete unbiased sample to date within 300 pc. We combined VLT/X-Shooter spectra with BVR photometric observations and Gaia DR3 distances to estimate fundamental stellar parameters such as Teff, mass, radius, age, and luminosity. We further selected those stars within the intermediate mass range 1.5 <= Mstar/Msun <= 3.5 and discarded old contaminants. W…
The radial velocities and direct imaging observations of exoplanets have suggested that the frequency of giant planets may decrease for intermediate-mass stars ($2.5-8\,M_\odot$). The key mechanism that could hinder their formation remains unclear. From a theoretical point of view, planet formation around intermediate-mass stars may take place on longer timescales, which -- coupled with fast migration and efficient photoevaporation -- may prevent planetary formation in these environments. In this letter, we investigate the temporal evolution of the radial drift for dust particles in disks when…
We investigate four young, but non-accreting, very low mass stars in Orion, which show irregular eclipses by circumstellar dust. The eclipses are not recurring periodically, are variable in depth, lack a flat bottom, and their duration is comparable to the typical timescale between eclipses. The dimming is associated with reddening consistent with dust extinction. Taken together this implies the presence of rings around these four stars, with radii ranging from 0.01 to 40 AU, comprised of optically thin dust clouds. The stars also show IR excess indicating the presence of evolved circumstellar…
The Scorpius-Centaurus (Sco-Cen) young and nearby massive star-forming region is particularly well suited for extrasolar planet searches with both direct imaging and radial velocity (RV) techniques. The RV search, however, is challenging, as the stars are faster rotators on average than their older stellar counterparts of similar spectral types. Moreover, the RV time series show strong signatures of stellar variability (spots and faculae) and/or stellar pulsations. Our aim is to search for giant planets (GPs) and brown dwarfs at short orbital distances around star members of the Sco-Cen associ…
