In this paper we present a successful approach for the generation of partially fluorinated graphene structures. A computationally simple model optimized on a large DFT dataset quickly and precisely predicts experimentally observed structures. From the analysis of the structural diversity of fluorinated graphene in a wide range of synthesis temperatures, the general structural patterns are identified and the conditions for their achievement are determined. In addition, to facilitate further studies of fluorinated graphene, we present a ready-to-use GenCF code that implements the described structure generator.
Within the framework of stochastic reactive molecular dynamics simulations we develop a statistical method for generating fluorinated graphene structures with desirable fluorine distribution. Electronic transport properties of fluorinated graphene in a wide range of functionalization degree and system ordering are investigated. We have found a strong correlation between irregularities in fluorine distribution and electronic properties. In particular, proposed consideration allows us to reproduce both the experimentally observed electron-hole asymmetry in transport properties of fluorinated gra…
A suspended layer made up of ferromagnetically ordered spins could be created between two mono/multilayer graphene through intercalation. Stability and electronic structure studies show that, when fluorine molecules are intercalated between two mono/multilayer graphene, their bonds get stretched enough ($\sim$ 1.9$-$2.0 Å) to weaken their molecular singlet eigenstate. Geometrically, these stretched molecules form a pseudoatomized fluorine layer by maintaining a van der Waals separation of $\sim$ 2.6 Å from the adjacent carbon layers. As there is a significant charge transfer from the adjacent …
The flexoelectric and electronic properties of zig-zag graphene nanoribbons are explored under mechanical bending using state of the art first principles calculations. A linear dependence of the bending induced out of plane polarization on the applied strain gradient is found. The inferior flexoelectric properties of graphene nanoribbons can be improved by more than two orders of magnitude by hydrogen and fluorine functionalization (CH and CF nanoribbons). A large out of plane flexoelectric effect is predicted for CF nanoribbons. The origin of this enhancement lies in the electro-negativity di…
Patterning of graphene into micro- and nano-ribbons allows for the tunability in emerging fields such as flexible electronic and optoelectronic devices, and is gaining interest for the production of more efficient reinforcement for composite materials. In this work we fabricate micro-ribbons from CVD graphene by combining UV photolithography and dry etching oxygen plasma treatments. Raman spectral imaging confirms the effectiveness of the patterning procedure, which is suitable for large-area patterning of graphene on wafer-scale, and confirms that the quality of graphene remains unaltered. Th…
Graphene functionalization by hydrogen and fluorine has been proposed as a route to modulate its reactivity and electronic properties. However, until now, proposed systems present degradation and limited hydrogen adsorption capacity. In this study, combining first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) and reactive molecular dynamics, we analyze the tuning of hydrogen adsorption and electronic properties in fluorinated and hydrogenated monolayer graphenes. Our results indicate that fluorine adsorption promotes stronger carbon$-$hydrogen bonds. By changing the concentr…
The aim of this study is to assess femtosecond laser patterning of graphene in air and in vacuum for the application as source and drain electrodes in thin-film transistors (TFTs). The analysis of the laser-patterned graphene with scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy showed that processing in vacuum leads to less debris formation and thus re-deposited carbonaceous material on the sample compared to laser processing in air. It was found that the debris reduction due to patterning in vacuum improves the TFT characteristics significantly. Hysteresis disappe…
The Hydrogen and Fluorine planar armchairs graphene nanoribbons (H and F AGNRs), subjected to twist deformation within fixed periodic boundary conditions, eventually morph to a helical conformations are investigated at few tractable points. Unlike structural properties, no effect of symmetries on mechanical properties is observed, though passivation does have a significant effect on mechanical as well as on electrical properties. Hookes law for severely twisted AGNRs indicates the high elasticity of H-AGNRs whereas the F-AGNRs shows plasticity after threshold torsional strain. Torsional stress…
Control of atomic-scale interfaces between materials with distinct electronic structures is crucial for the design and fabrication of most electronic devices. In the case of two-dimensional (2D) materials, disparate electronic structures can be realized even within a single uniform sheet, merely by locally applying different vertical bias voltages. Indeed, it has been suggested that nanoscale electronic patterning in a single sheet can be achieved by placing the 2D material on a suitably pre-patterned substrate, exploiting the sensitivity of 2D materials to their environment via band alignment…
Femtosecond micromachining offers a contact-free and mask-less technique for material patterning. With ultrafast laser irradiation, permanent modifications to the properties of single layer graphene through material ablation or defect introduction can be induced. Multiple femtosecond pulse interactions with a single layer graphene are studied and a low laser ablation threshold ~9.2 mJ/cm2 is reported for a 15 second illumination time. Clean ablated structures are generated in such a multi pulse irradiation configuration at low pulse energies as an attractive alternative to ablation with single…
Graphene is attracting vast interest due to its superior electronic and mechanical properties. However, structure and electronic properties of its edge are often neglected, although they are important for nanoscale devices because the edge ratio becomes larger by decreasing the device size. In this study, we suggest a way to fabricate a graphene with atomically aligned zigzag edges by applying hydrogen-plasma etching (HPE) technique. By patterning a graphene prior to HPE, it is succeeded to shape a graphene in desired structure. Both atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy confirm that …
We have investigated the effect of twisting on electronic band structure, effective mass and carrier mobilities of three prototypes of AGNRs (N=6, 7 & 8) using Density functional theory combined with Deformation potential theory and Effective mass approximation. It is shown that the influence of twisted modes electron-phonon interaction is smaller than stretching modes, nonetheless, twisting has a profound effect on effective mass and mobilities. Similar to earlier reported conclusion in which the ideal N=3n wide HAGNR potentially exhibit an electron mobility comparable to intrinsic graphene, …
Generally, it is supposed that the Fermi level in epitaxial graphene is controlled by two effects: p-type polarization doping induced by the bulk of the hexagonal SiC(0001) substrate and overcompensation by donor-like states related to the buffer layer. In this work, we evidence that this effect is also related to the specific underlying SiC terrace. We fabricated a periodic sequence of non-identical SiC terraces, which are unambiguously attributed to specific SiC surface terminations. A clear correlation between the SiC termination and the electronic graphene properties is experimentally obse…
