As introduced by Bollobás, a graph $G$ is weakly $H$-saturated if the complete graph $K_n$ is obtained by iteratively completing copies of $H$ minus an edge. For all graphs $H$, we obtain an asymptotic lower bound for the critical threshold $p_c$, at which point the Erdős--Rényi graph ${\mathcal G}_{n,p}$ is likely to be weakly $H$-saturated. We also prove an upper bound for $p_c$, for all $H$ which are, in a sense, strictly balanced. In particular, we improve the upper bound by Balogh, Bollob{á}s and Morris for $H=K_r$, and we conjecture that this is sharp up to constants.
We study the number of random records in an arbitrary split tree (or equivalently, the number of random cuttings required to eliminate the tree). We show that a classical limit theorem for convergence of sums of triangular arrays to infinitely divisible distributions can be used to determine the distribution of this number. After normalization the distributions are shown to be asymptotically weakly 1-stable. This work is a generalization of our earlier results for the random binary search tree, which is one specific case of split trees. Other important examples of split trees include $m$-ary s…
We study the asymptotic behavior of the probability of non extinction of a weakly subcritical multitype branching process in iid random environments. Under suitable assumptions, the survival probability is of order of $ρ^n n ^{-3/2}$ for some $ρ\in (0, 1)$ to specify.
A central limit theorem is proved for some strictly stationary sequences of random variables that satisfy certain mixing conditions and are subjected to the "shrinking operators" $U_r(x):=[\max\{|x|-r,0\}]\cdot x/|x|,\ r \ge 0$. For independent, identically distributed random variables, this result was proved earlier by Housworth and Shao.
We deduce sufficient conditions for the Central Limit Theorem (CLT) in the Lebesgue-Riesz space L(p) defined on some measure space for the sequence of centered random variables satisfying the strong mixing (Rosenblatt) condition. We investigate the asymptotical as well as non-asymptotical approach.
We study the scaling limit and prove the law of large numbers for weakly pinned Gaussian random fields under the critical situation that two possible candidates of the limits exist at the level of large deviation principle. This paper extends the results of [3], [7] for one dimensional fields to higher dimensions: d \geq 3, at least if the strength of pinning is sufficiently large.
In this paper, we derive a central limit theorem for collections of weakly correlated random variables indexed by discrete metric spaces, where the correlation decays in the distance of the indices. The correlation structure we study depends solely on the separability of mixed moments. Our investigation yields a new proof for the CLT for $α$-mixing random variables, but also non-$α$-mixing random variables fit within our framework, such as MA($\infty$) processes. In particular, our results can be applied to ARMA($p,q$) process with independent white noise.
We prove error bounds in a central limit theorem for solutions of certain convolution equations. The main motivation for investigating these equations stems from applications to lace expansions, in particular to weakly self-avoiding random walks in high dimensions. As an application we treat such self-avoiding walks in continuous space. The bounds obtained are sharper than the ones obtained by other methods.
Let $X=(X_1,\ldots,X_n)$ be a vector of i.i.d. random variables where $X_i$'s take values over $\mathbb{N}$. The purpose of this paper is to study the number of weakly increasing subsequences of $X$ of a given length $k$, and the number of all weakly increasing subsequences of $X$. For the former, it is shown that a central limit theorem holds. Also, the first two moments of each of those two random variables are analyzed, their asymptotics are investigated, and results are related to the case of similar statistics in uniformly random permutations. We conclude the paper with applications on a …
We discuss sufficient conditions that guarantee the existence of asymptotic expansions for the Central Limit Theorem for weakly dependent random variables including observations arising from sufficiently chaotic dynamical systems like piece-wise expanding maps, and strongly ergodic Markov chains. We primarily use spectral techniques to obtain the results.
For moving average processes with random coefficients and heavy-tailed innovations that are weakly dependent in the sense of strong mixing and local dependence condition $D'$ we study joint functional convergence of partial sums and maxima. Under the assumption that all partial sums of the series of coefficients are a.s. bounded between zero and the sum of the series we derive a functional limit theorem in the space of $\mathbb{R}^{2}$-valued càdlàg functions on $[0, 1]$ with the Skorokhod weak $M_{2}$ topology.
For a branching process in random environment it is assumed that the offspring distribution of the individuals varies in a random fashion, independently from one generation to the other. Interestingly there is the possibility that the process may at the same time be subcritical and, conditioned on nonextinction, 'supercritical'. This so-called weakly subcritical case is considered in this paper. We study the asymptotic survival probability and the size of the population conditioned on non-extinction. Also a functional limit theorem is proven, which makes the conditional supercriticality manife…
We introduce a new functional measure of tail dependence for weakly dependent (asymptotically independent) random vectors, termed weak tail dependence function. The new measure is defined at the level of copulas and we compute it for several copula families such as the Gaussian copula, copulas of a class of Gaussian mixture models, certain Archimedean copulas and extreme value copulas. The new measure allows to quantify the tail behavior of certain functionals of weakly dependent random vectors at the log scale.
Using an alternative notion of entropy introduced by Datta, the max-entropy, we present a new simplified framework to study the minimizers of the specific free energy for random fields which are weakly dependent in the sense of Lewis, Pfister, and Sullivan. The framework is then applied to derive the variational principle for the loop $O(n)$ model and the Ising model in a random percolation environment in the nonmagnetic phase, and we explain how to extend the variational principle to similar models. To demonstrate the generality of the framework, we indicate how to naturally fit into it the v…
We consider weakly interacting diffusions on time varying random graphs. The system consists of a large number of nodes in which the state of each node is governed by a diffusion process that is influenced by the neighboring nodes. The collection of neighbors of a given node changes dynamically over time and is determined through a time evolving random graph process. A law of large numbers and a propagation of chaos result is established for a multi-type population setting where at each instant the interaction between nodes is given by an inhomogeneous random graph which may change over time. …
We study $2$-neighbor one-dimensional cellular automata with a large number $n$ of states and randomly selected rules. We focus on the rules with weakly robust periodic solutions (WRPS). WRPS are global configurations that exhibit spatial and temporal periodicity and advance into any environment with at least a fixed strictly positive velocity. Our main result quantifies how unlikely WRPS are: the probability of existence of a WRPS within a finite range of periods is asymptotically proportional to $1/n$, provided that a divisibility condition is satisfied. Our main tools come from random graph…
We extend recent higher order concentration results in the discrete setting to include functions of possibly dependent variables whose distribution (on the product space) satisfies a logarithmic Sobolev inequality with respect to a difference operator that arises from Gibbs sampler type dynamics. Examples of such random variables include the Ising model on a graph with n nodes with general, but weak interactions, i.e. in the Dobrushin uniqueness regime, for which we prove concentration results of homogeneous polynomials, as well as random permutations, and slices of the hypercube with dynamics…
We study noisy computation in randomly generated k-ary Boolean formulas. We establish bounds on the noise level above which the results of computation by random formulas are not reliable. This bound is saturated by formulas constructed from a single majority-like gates. We show that these gates can be used to compute any Boolean function reliably below the noise bound.
We provide a systematic approach to deal with the following problem. Let $X_1,\ldots,X_n$ be, possibly dependent, $[0,1]$-valued random variables. What is a sharp upper bound on the probability that their sum is significantly larger than their mean? In the case of independent random variables, a fundamental tool for bounding such probabilities is devised by Wassily Hoeffding. In this paper we consider analogues of Hoeffding's result for sums of dependent random variables for which we have certain information on their dependency structure. We prove a result that yields concentration inequalitie…
In a digraph with $n$ vertices, a minuscule construct is a subdigraph with $m<<n$ vertices. We study the number of copies of a minuscule constructs in $k$ nearest neighbor ($k$NN) digraph of the data from a random point process in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Based on the asymptotic theory for functionals of point sets under homogeneous Poisson process and binomial point process, we provide a general result for the asymptotic behavior of the number of minuscule constructs and as corollaries, we obtain asymptotic results for the number of vertices with fixed indegree, the number of shared $k$NN pairs and th…
We show that for a weakly dense subset of the domain of attraction of a positive stable random variable of index $0<α<1$($DOA\left(α\right))$ the functional stable convergence is a time-changed renewal convergence of distribution of finite mean. Applied to Continuous Time Random Walk(CTRW) á la Montroll and Wiess we show that CTRW with renewal times in a weakly dense set of $DOA\left(α\right)$ can be realized as random walk in a random environment. We find the quenched limit and give a bound on the error of the approximation.
This note investigates invariance principles for sums of N(nt) iid radom variables, where n is an integer, t is a positive real number and N(u) is a stochastic process with nonnegative integer values. We show that the sequence of sums of these random variables denoted S(n,t), when appropriately centered and normalized, weakly converges to a Gaussian process. We give sufficient conditions depending on the expectation of N(nt) which allows to rescale S(n,t) into a stochastic S(n,a(t)) weakly converging to a Brownian motion.
The multivariate central limit theorems (CLT) for the volumes of excursion sets of stationary quasi-associated random fields on $\mathbb{R}^d$ are proved. Special attention is paid to Gaussian and shot noise fields. Formulae for the covariance matrix of the limiting distribution are provided. A statistical version of the CLT is considered as well. Some numerical results are also discussed.
We investigate the race between prime numbers in many residue classes modulo $q$, assuming the standard conjectures GRH and LI. Among our results we exhibit, for the first time, prime races modulo $q$ with $n$ competitor classes where the biases do not dissolve when $n, q\to \infty$. We also study the leaders in the prime number race, obtaining asymptotic formulae for logarithmic densities when the number of competitors can be as large as a power of $q$, whereas previous methods could only allow a power of $\log q$. The proofs use harmonic analysis related to the Hardy--Littlewood circle metho…
We show that in weakly confining conservative force fields, a subclass of diffusion-type (Smoluchowski) processes, admits a family of "heavy-tailed" non-Gaussian equilibrium probability density functions (pdfs), with none or a finite number of moments. These pdfs, in the standard Gibbs-Boltzmann form, can be also inferred directly from an extremum principle, set for Shannon entropy under a constraint that the mean value of the force potential has been a priori prescribed. That enforces the corresponding Lagrange multiplier to play the role of inverse temperature. Weak confining properties of t…
