Significant transition strength in light $α$-conjugate nuclei at low energy, typically below 10 MeV, has been observed in many experiments. In this work the isoscalar low-energy response of N=Z nuclei is explored using the Finite Amplitude Method (FAM) based on the microscopic framework of nuclear energy density functionals. Depending on the multipolarity of the excitation and the equilibrium deformation of a particular isotope, the low-energy strength functions display prominent peaks that can be attributed to vibration of cluster structures: $α$+$^{12}$C+$α$ and $α$+$^{16}$O in $^{20}$Ne, $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C in $^{24}$Mg, 4$α$+$^{12}$C in $^{28}$Si, etc. Such cluster excitations are favored in light nuclei with large deformation.
From the semi-empirical formalisms of Bohr-Mottelson, a new model, based on the effect of beta- and gamma- head energies and the variable moment of inertia, was developed to calculate the ground state rotational band of almost all deformed e-e nuclei. The model can be tuned for nuclei with experimentally available beta- and gamma-vibrational energies as well as for those with unmeasured beta- and gamma-vibrations.
We have perfomed Time Dependant Hartree-Fock (TDHF) calculations on the non linear response of nuclei. We have shown that quadrupole (and dipole) motion produces monopole (and quadrupole) oscillations in all atomic nuclei. We have shown that these findings can be interpreted as a large coupling between one and two phonon states leading to large anharmonicities.
Recent results obtained, often in fruitful collaboration with Japanese colleagues in the study of the interplay between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom are reviewed.
Octupole vibrations are studied in some doubly magic nuclei using the time-dependent Hartree-Fock (TDHF) theory with a Skyrme energy density functional. Through the use of the linear response theory, the energies and transition amplitudes of the low-lying vibrational modes for each of the nuclei were determined. Energies were found to be close to experimental results. However, transition amplitudes, quantified by the deformation parameter $β_3$, are underestimated by TDHF. A comparison with single-particle excitations on the Hartree-Fock ground-state shows that the collective octupole vibratio…
Double-$γ$ vibrations in deformed nuclei are studied in the context of the interacting boson model with special reference to their anharmonic character. It is shown that large anharmonicities can be obtained with interactions that are (at least) of three-body nature between the bosons. As an example the $γ$ vibrations of the nucleus $^{166}_{\phantom{0}68}$Er$^{\phantom{00}}_{98}$ are studied in detail.
The effective field theory (EFT) for triaxially deformed even-even nuclei is generalized to include the vibrational degrees of freedom. The pertinent Hamiltonian is constructed up to next-to-leading order. The leading order part describes the vibrational motion, and the NLO part couples rotations to vibrations. The applicability of the EFT Hamiltonian is examined through the description of the energy spectra of the ground state bands, $γ$-bands, and $K=4$ bands in the $^{108, 110, 112}$Ru isotopes. It is found that by taking into account the vibrational degrees of freedom, the deviations for h…
In this letter, we show that the non-linearitites of large amplitude motions in atomic nuclei induce giant quadrupole and monopole vibrations. As a consequence, the main source of anharmonicity is the coupling with configurations including one of these two giant resonances on top of any state. Two-phonon energies are often lowered by one or two MeV because of the large matrix elements with such three phonon configurations. These effects are studied in two nuclei, 40Ca and 208Pb.
The contribution of quantum shape fluctuations to inertial properties of rotating nuclei has been analysed within the self-consistent one-dimensional cranking oscillator model. It is shown that in even-even nuclei the dynamical moment of inertia calculated in the mean field approximation is equivalent to the Thouless-Valatin moment of inertia calculated in the random phase approximation if and only if the self-consistent conditions for the mean field are fulfilled.
Although nuclear energy density functionals are determined primarily by fitting to ground state properties, they are often applied in nuclear astrophysics to excited states, usually through the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA). Here we test the Skyrme functionals SkM* and SLy4 along with the self-consistent QRPA by calculating properties of low-lying vibrational states in a large number of well-deformed even-even rare-earth nuclei. We reproduce trends in energies and transition probabilities associated with gamma-vibrational states, but our results are not perfect and indicate t…
This work presents an older, but still interesting description of a superfluid condensate with two components (protons and neutrons), confined by time-dependent deformed harmonic oscillator potentials either in collective uniform rotation, or opposite angular oscillation.
The model, introduced in a previous paper, for the description of the octupole and quadrupole degrees of freedom in conditions close to the axial symmetry, is used to describe the negative-parity band based on the first octupole vibrational state in nuclei close to the critical point of the U(5) to SU(3) phase transition. The situation of 150Nd and 152Sm is discussed in detail. The positive parity levels of these nuclei, and also the in-band E2 transitions, are reasonably accounted for by the X(5) model. With simple assumptions on the nature of the octupole vibrations, it is possible to descri…
Microscopic RPA calculations based on the cranked shell model are performed to investigate the quadrupole and octupole correlations for excited superdeformed (SD) bands in even-even A=190 nuclei. The K=2 octupole vibrations are predicted to be the lowest excitation modes at zero rotational frequency. The Coriolis coupling at finite frequency produces different effects depending on the neutron and proton number of nucleus. The calculations also indicate that some collective excitations may produce J(2) moments of inertia almost identical to those of the yrast SD band. An interpretation of the o…
Role of pairing correlation for emergence of low-frequency vibrational excitations in neutron drip line nuclei is discussed paying special attention to neutrons with small orbital angular momentum l. Self-consistent pairing correlation in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory causes the change of the spatial structure of the quasiparticle wave functions; "the pairing anti-halo effect" in the lower component and "the broadening effect" in the upper component. The resultant spatial distribution of the two-quasiparticle states among low-l neutrons, "the broad localization", brings about qualit…
The effect of quadrupole-type surface vibrations on the quadrupole response function of heavy nuclei is studied by using a model based on the solution of the linearized Vlasov equation with moving-surface boundary conditions. By using a separable approximation for the residual interaction, an analytical expression is obtained for the moving-surface response function. Comparison of the fixed- and moving-surface strength functions shows that surface vibrations are essential in order to achieve a unified description of the two characteristic features of the quadrupole response: the giant resonanc…
The impact of particle-vibration coupling and polarization effects due to deformation and time-odd mean fields on single-particle spectra is studied systematically in doubly magic nuclei from low mass $^{56}$Ni up to superheavy ones. Particle-vibration coupling is treated fully self-consistently within the framework of relativistic particle-vibration coupling model. Polarization effects due to deformation and time-odd mean field induced by odd particle are computed within covariant density functional theory. It has been found that among these contributions the coupling to vibrations makes a ma…
The phase transition of nuclei to increasing angular momentum (or spin) and excitation energy is one of the most fundamental topics of nuclear structure research. The odd-N nuclei with A equal 160 are widely considered belonging to the well-deformed region, and their excitation spectra are energetically favored to exhibit the rotational characteristics. In the present work, however, there is evidence indicating that the nuclei can evolve from rotation to vibration along the yrast lines while increasing spin. The simple method, named as E-Gamma Over Spin (E-GOS) curves, would be used to discern…
Properties of octupole vibrations in rapidly rotating nuclei are discussed. Microscopic RPA calculations based on the cranked shell model are performed to investigate the interplay between rotation and vibrations. The ability of this model to describe the properties of collective vibrations built on the ground bands in rare-earth and actinide nuclei is demonstrated at high angular momentum. The octupole vibrational states in even-even superdeformed Hg nuclei are also predicted and compared with available experimental data. A new interpretation of the observed excited superdeformed bands invoki…
The coherent state model (CSM) and the triaxial rotation-vibration model (TRVM) are alternatively used to describe the ground, gamma and beta bands of 228Th. CSM is also applied to the nuclei 126Xe and 130Ba, which were recently considered in TRVM. The two models are compared with respect to both their underlying assumptions and to their predicted results for energy levels and E2 branching ratios. Both models describe energies and quadrupole transitions of 228Th equally well and in good agreement with experiment, if the 0$_3^+$ level at 1120 keV is interpreted as the head of the beta band. The…
Heavy even-even nuclei exhibit low-energy collective excitations that are separated in scale from the microscopic (fermion) degrees of freedom. This separation of scale allows us to approach nuclear vibrations within an effective field theory (EFT). In odd-mass nuclei collective and single-particle properties compete at low energies, and this makes their description more challenging. In this article we describe odd-mass nuclei with ground-state spin $I=\sfrac{1}{2}$ by means of an EFT that couples a fermion to the collective degrees of freedom of an even-even core. The EFT relates observables …
Nuclear $β$-decay in magic nuclei is investigated, taking into account the coupling between particle and collective vibrations,on top of self-consistent random phase approximation calculations based on Skyrme density functionals. The low-lying Gamow-Teller strength is shifted downwards and at times becomes fragmented; as a consequence, the $β$-decay half-lives are reduced due to the increase of the phase space available for the decay. In some cases, this leads to a very good agreement between theoretical and experimental lifetimes: this happens, in particular, in the case of the Skyrme force S…
The energy splittings between the proton $1h_{11/2}$ and $1g_{7/2}$ states in the Sb (Z=51) isotopes and the neutron $1i_{13/2}$ and $1h_{9/2}$ states in the ${N=83}$ isotones are analyzed within relativistic quasiparticle-vibration coupling (QVC) model. Although a common viewpoint is that an effective tensor interaction is needed to reproduce these splittings, we show, for the first time, that quasiparticle-vibration coupling also improves their description considerably. The remaining differences between the experiment and the QVC calculations point to a complex scenario in which both tensor …
Excitation of pairing vibrations in superfluid nuclei is studied by using a kinetic model based on the Vlasov equation with pairing, derived from the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov theory. The anomalous density response function is used to find the monopole pairing mode and the dynamic variation of the pairing gap associated with this mode. The spectroscopic factor for the excitation of monopole pairing vibrations in two-neutron transfer reaction is estimated. It is found that the pairing correlations give rise to the same coherent contribution to the semiclassical spectroscopic factor…
Analytical formulas for the excitation energies as well as for the electric quadrupole reduced transition probabilities in the ground, beta and gamma bands were derived within the coherent state model for the near vibrational and well deformed nuclei. Numerical calculations were performed for 42 nuclei exhibiting various symmetries and therefore with specific properties. Comparison of the calculation results with the corresponding experimental data shows a good agreement. The parameters involved in the proposed model satisfy evident regularities being interpolated by smooth curves. Few of them…
Multi-phonon excitations in atomic nuclei were observed very rarely although collective motions in quantum many-body systems are described as bosonic excitations. In particular, the first two-phonon $γ$ vibrational ($2γ$) excitation in odd-$A$ nuclei was reported in 2006 and only a few have been known. Quite recently, conspicuously enhanced $B(E2)$s feeding $2γ$ states were observed in $^{105}$Nb and conjectured that their parent states are candidates of $3γ$ states. In the present work, the model space is enlarged from the present author's previous calculation for $^{103}$Nb. The purpose is t…
We review an extension of Migdal's Theory of Finite Fermi Systems which has been developed and applied to collective vibrations in closed shell nuclei in the past ten years. This microscopic approach is based on a consistent use of the Green function method. Here one considers in a consistent way more complex 1p1h$\otimes$phonon configurations beyond the RPA correlations. Moreover, these configurations are not only included in the excited states but also explicitly in the ground states of nuclei. The method has been applied to the calculation of the strength distribution and transition densiti…
Nuclear forces violating parity and time reversal invariance (${\cal P},{\cal T}$-odd) produce ${\cal P},{\cal T}$-odd nuclear moments, for example, the nuclear Schiff moment. In turn, this moment can induce the electric dipole moment in the atom. The nuclear Schiff moment is predicted to be enhanced in nuclei with static quadrupole and octupole deformation. The analogous suggestion of the enhanced contribution to the Schiff moment from the soft collective quadrupole and octupole vibrations in spherical nuclei is tested in this article in the framework of the quasiparticle random phase approxi…
Low-frequency $K^π=0^{+}$ states in deformed neutron-rich nuclei are investigated by means of the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism in the coordinate space. We have obtained the very strongly collective $K^π=0^{+}$ modes not only in neutron-rich Mg isotope but also in Cr and Fe isotopes in N=40 region, where the onset of nuclear deformation has been discussed. It is found that the spatially extended structure of neutron quasiparticle wave functions around the Fermi level brings about a striking enhancement of the transition strengths. It is…
Pairing interactions with various density dependencies (surface/volume mixing) are constrained with the two-neutron separation energy in the Tin isotopic chain. The response associated with pairing vibrations in very neutron-rich nuclei is sensitive to the density dependence of the pairing interaction. Using the same pairing interaction in nuclear matter and in Tin nuclei, the range of densities where the LDA is valid in the pairing channel is also studied.
Recent experimental advances have made it possible to study excited structure in superheavy nuclei. The observed states have often been interpreted as quasi-particle excitations. We show that in superheavy nuclei collective vibrations systematically appear as low-energy excitation modes. By using the microscopic Triaxial Projected Shell Model, we make a detailed prediction on gamma-vibrational states and their E2 transition probabilities to the ground state band in Fermium and Nobelium isotopes where active structure research is going on, and in 270Ds, the heaviest isotope where decay data hav…
We present a detailed discussion of the solution of Nambu-Gor'kov equations in superfluid nuclei, which provide a consistent framework to deal with the interplay between particle-hole and particle- particle channel, including the effects of the fragmentation of the quasiparticle strength and of the pairing interaction induced by the exchange of collective vibrations. The coupling between quasiparticle and vibrations is determined from the experimental polarizability of the low-lying collective surface vibrations. This coupling is used to renormalize the properties of quasiparticles obtained fr…
In this paper we present a new formalism to implement the nuclear particle-vibration coupling (PVC) model. The key issue is the proper treatment of the continuum, that is allowed by the coordinate space representation. Our formalism, based on the use of zero-range interactions like the Skyrme forces, is microscopic and fully self-consistent. We apply it to the case of neutron single-particle states in $^{40}$Ca, $^{208}$Pb and $^{24}$O. The first two cases are meant to illustrate the comparison with the usual (i.e., discrete) PVC model. However, we stress that the present approach allows to ca…
We investigate the possible signature of the presence of giant pairing states at excitation energy of about 10 MeV via two-particle transfer reactions induced by neutron-rich weakly-bound projectiles. Performing particle-particle RPA calculations on $^{208}$Pb and BCS+RPA calculations on $^{116}$Sn, we obtain the pairing strength distribution for two particles addition and removal modes. Estimates of two-particle transfer cross sections can be obtained in the framework of the 'macroscopic model'. The weak-binding nature of the projectile kinematically favours transitions to high-lying states. …
We present a new analysis of the pairing vibrations around 56Ni, with emphasis on odd-odd nuclei. This analysis of the experimental excitation energies is based on the subtraction of average properties that include the full symmetry energy together with volume, surface and Coulomb terms. The results clearly indicate a collective behavior of the isovector pairing vibrations and do not support any appreciable collectivity in the isoscalar channel.
The approach in a theory of collective excitations in hot nuclei exploring the formalism of thermo field dynamics and the model Hamiltonian consisting of a mean field, the BCS paring interaction and long-range particle-hole effective forces is reexamined. In contrast with earlier studies it is found that a wave function of a thermal phonon is depended not only on the Fermi-Dirac thermal occupation numbers of Bogoliubov quasiparticles consisting the phonon but on the Bose thermal occupation numbers of the phonon as well. This strongly affects a thermal phonon couplings due to renormalizing of a…
Collective monopole vibrations are studied in the framework of an antisymmetrized version of molecular dynamics as a function of the vibration amplitude. The giant monopole resonance energy in ${}^{40}Ca$ is sensitive to the incompressibility of the effective interaction, in good agreement with complete time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations. The collective response of ${}^{12}C$, ${}^{16}O$ and ${}^{24}Mg$ is also studied. For these lighter nuclei that have an important contribution of an $α$-clustered component, different frequencies are observed, corresponding to two different types of vi…
For studying the collective pairing excitations of nuclei, the two-nucleon transfer reactions in superfluid nuclei (the pairing gap of the ground state is not zero), in particular, the (p,t) reaction, are of the greatest interest. A simple model of monopole pairing excitations in superfluid nuclei on the basis of the semiclassical time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov theory in the limit of small amplitudes is considered. Using the anomalous density response function, the monopole pairing mode in the energy region of double pairing gap and the variation of the pairing gap associated with this…
In addition to shape oscillations, low-energy excitation spectra of deformed nuclei are also influenced by pairing vibrations. The simultaneous description of these collective modes and their coupling has been a long-standing problem in nuclear structure theory. Here we address the problem in terms of self-consistent mean-field calculations of collective deformation energy surfaces, and the framework of the interacting boson approximation. In addition to quadrupole shape vibrations and rotations, the explicit coupling to pairing vibrations is taken into account by a boson-number non-conserving…
Coupling shape and pairing vibrations in a collective Hamiltonian based on nuclear energy density functionals (II): low-energy excitation spectra of triaxial nuclei
In this work, we expand upon our previous study, the effect of surface vibrations (low-lying vibrational states) on the calculation of penetration probability in alpha decay of spherical isotopes [Phys.Rev.C91,034611(2015)]. To this aim, the Coulomb and proximity potential model, taking in to account the ground state deformations of the involved nuclei along with the surface vibrations in the daughter nucleus, is used to evaluate the alpha decay probability. The results are compared with those obtained by spherical potential barrier, which shows the dramatic effect of employing the ground stat…
L=0 proton-neutron ($pn$) pair-addition and pair-removal strengths in $^{40}$Ca and $^{56}$Ni are investigated by means of the $pn$ particle-particle random-phase approximation employing a Skyrme energy-density functional. It is found that the collectivity of the lowest $J^π= 1^+$ state in the adjacent odd-odd nuclei becomes stronger as the strength of the isoscalar (T=0) pairing interaction increases. The results suggest the emergence of the T=0 $pn$-pairing vibrational mode as a possible critical phenomenon toward the T=0 pairing condensation.
Evidence of strong coupling of quasiparticle excitations with gamma-vibration is shown to occur in transitional nuclei. High-spin band structures in [166,168,170,172]Er are studied by employing the recently developed multi-quasiparticle triaxial projected shell model approach. It is demonstrated that a low-lying K=3 band observed in these nuclei, the nature of which has remained unresolved, originates from the angular-momentum projection of triaxially deformed two-quasiparticle (qp) configurations. Further, it is predicted that the structure of this band depends critically on the shell filling…
Some developments of nuclear-structure physics uniquely related to Copenhagen School are sketched based on theoretical considerations versus experimental findings and one-particle versus collective aspects. Based on my personal overview I pick up the following topics; (1) Study of vibration in terms of particle-vibration coupling; (2) One-particle motion in deformed and rotating potentials, and yrast spectroscopy in high-spin physics; (3) Triaxial shape in nuclei: wobbling motion and chiral bands; (4) Nuclear structure of drip line nuclei: in particular, shell-structure (or magic numbers) chan…
A method to evaluate the particle-phonon coupling (PC) corrections to the single-particle energies in semi-magic nuclei, based on the direct solution of the Dyson equation with PC corrected mass operator, is presented. It is used for finding the odd-even mass difference between even Pb and Sn isotopes and their odd-proton neighbors. The Fayans energy density functional (EDF) DF3-a is used which gives rather highly accurate predictions for these mass differences already at the mean-field level. In the case of the lead chain, account for the PC corrections induced by the low-laying phonons $2^+_…
The Giant Pairing Vibration, a two-nucleon collective mode originating from the second shell above the Fermi surface, has long been predicted and expected to be strongly populated in two-nucleon transfer reactions with cross sections similar to those of the normal Pairing Vibration. Recent experiments have provided evidence for this mode in $^{14,15}$C but, despite sensitive studies, it has not been definitively identified either in Sn or Pb nuclei where pairing correlations are known to play a crucial role near their ground states. In this paper we review the basic theoretical concepts of thi…
The incompressibility of both nuclear matter and finite nuclei is estimated by the monopole compression modes in nuclei in the framework of a nonrelativistic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliyubov method and the coherent density fluctuation model. The monopole states originate from vibrations of the nuclear density. The calculations in the model for the incompressibility in finite nuclei are based on the Brueckner energy-density functional for nuclear matter. Results for the energies of the breathing vibrational states and finite nuclei incompressibilities are obtained for various nuclei and their values ar…
Background: Low-lying collective excitations of inner crust matter in neutron stars are expected to have impact on observables such as the quasi-periodic oscillation in giant flares and the cooling of inner crust in transient phenomena. Coupling between Anderson-Bogoliubov superfluid phonon (AB phonon) in superfluid neutron gas and collective excitations of nuclear clusters is a key issue. Purpose: We intend to predict the nature of low-lying excitation modes of superfluid inner crust matter with focus on quadrupole excitations around a spherical nuclear cluster. We study how the AB phonon of …
A particle-vibration coupling calculation based on the RPA and the cranked shell model has been carried out for superdeformed rotational bands in $^{193}$Hg. The result suggests that properties of single-particle motions in superdeformed nuclei may be significantly affected by coupling effects with low-frequency octupole vibrational modes, especially by the lowest $K=2$ octupole mode.

Nuclear pairing properties are studied within an approach that includes the quasiparticle-number fluctuation (QNF) and coupling to the quasiparticle-pair vibrations at finite temperature and angular momentum. The formalism is developed to describe non-collective rotations about the symmetry axis. The numerical calculations are performed within a doubly-folded equidistant multilevel model as well as several realistic nuclei. The results obtained for the pairing gap, total energy and heat capacity show that the QNF smoothes out the sharp SN phase transition and leads to the appearance of a therm…
In this paper we analyze the possibility of the appearance of quadrupole vibrational states in superdeformed nuclei from the $A\approx 150$ region. We discuss the role of pairing correlations for a proper description of quadrupole vibrations, especially of the $β$ type.
We demonstrate that when two colliding nuclei approach each other, their quantum vibrations are damped near the touching point. We show that this damping is responsible for the fusion hindrance phenomena measured in the deep sub-barrier fusion reactions. To show those, we for the first time apply the random-phase-approximation (RPA) method to the two-body $^{16}$O + $^{16}$O and $^{40}$Ca + $^{40}$Ca systems. We calculate the octupole transition strengths for the two nuclei adiabatically approaching each other. The calculated transition strength drastically decreases near the touching point, s…
Background: The major challenge for nuclear theory is to describe and predict global properties and collective modes of atomic nuclei. Of particular interest is the response of the nucleus to a time-dependent external field that impacts the low-energy multipole and beta-decay strength. Purpose: We propose a method to compute low-lying collective modes in deformed nuclei within the finite amplitude method (FAM) based on the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA). By using the analytic property of the response function, we find the QRPA amplitudes by computing the residua of the FAM amp…
Low-frequency quadrupole vibrational modes in deformed $^{36,38,40}$Mg close to the neutron drip line are studied by means of the quasiparticle-random-phase approximation based on the coordinate-space Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov formalism. Strongly collective $K^π=0^{+}$ and $2^{+}$ excitation modes carrying 10-20 Weisskopf units in the intrinsic isoscalar quadrupole transition strengths are obtained at about 3 MeV. There are two reasons for the enhancement of the transition strengths. First, the quasiparticle wave functions generating these modes possess spatially very extended structure. The asy…
Techniques from effective field theory are applied to nuclear rotation. This approach exploits the spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry and the separation of scale between low-energy Nambu-Goldstone rotational modes and high-energy vibrational and nucleonic degrees of freedom. A power counting is established and the Hamiltonian is constructed at next-to-leading order.
Recent developments in the relativistic nuclear field theory (RNFT) are reviewed. Based on the covariant meson-nucleon Lagrangian of quantum hadrodynamics, RNFT connects consistently the high-energy scale of heavy mesons, medium-energy range of pion and the low-energy domain of emergent collective vibrations (phonons) in a parameter-free way. Mesons and phonons build up the effective interaction in various channels, in particular, the phonon-exchange part takes care of the retardation effects, which are of great importance for the fragmentation of single-particle states, spreading of collectiv…
