The electron scattering from periodic line defects on the surface of topological insulators with hexagonal warping effect is investigated theoretically by means of a transfer matrix method. The influence of surface line defects, acting as structural ripples on propagation of electrons are studied in two perpendicular directions due to the asymmetry of warped energy contour under momentum exchange. The transmission profiles and the details of resonant peaks which vary with the number of defects and the strength of their potentials are strongly dependent on the direction in which the line defects extend. At low energies, the quantum interference between the incident and reflected propagating electrons has the dominant contribution in transmission resonances, while at high energies the multiple scattering processes on the constant-energy contour also appear because of the strong warping effect. By increasing the spatial separation between the line defects, the minimum value of electrical conductance remains significantly high at low incident energies, while the minimum value may approach zero at high energies as the number of defects is increased. Our findings suggest that the potential ripples on the surface of topological insulators can be utilized to control the local electronic properties of these materials.
The structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of (STO)$_4$/(YTO)$_2$ superlattice consisting of Mott insulator YTiO$_3$ (YTO) and band insulator SrTiO$_3$ (STO) under strain are investigated by the density-functional-theory plus \emph{U} method. It is found that an insulator-metal transition occurs when a compressive strain of 0.2\% is applied. The structural analyses reveal that the presence of metallic state in such superlattices accompanies structural phase transition with restoring of inversion symmetry. Further study shows that this strain-induced structural transition makes the $d$…
Symmetry and localization properties of defect modes of a one-dimensional bi-component magnonic superlattice are theoretically studied. The magnonic superlattice can be seen as a periodic array of nanostripes, where stripes with different width, termed as defect stripes, are periodically introduced. By controlling the geometry of the defect stripes, a transition from dispersive to practically flat spin-wave defect modes can be observed inside the magnonic band gaps. It is shown that the spin-wave profile of the defect modes can be either symmetric or antisymmetric, depending on the geometry of…
A metal-insulator transition was induced by in-plane magnetic fields up to 27 T in homogeneously Sb-doped Si/SiGe superlattice structures. The localisation is not observed for perpendicular magnetic fields. A comparison with magnetoconductivity investigations in the weakly localised regime shows that the delocalising effect originates from the interaction-induced spin-triplet term in the particle-hole diffusion channel. It is expected that this term, possibly together with the singlet particle-particle contribution, is of general importance in disordered n-type Si bulk and heterostructures.
We study theoretically the surface of a topological insulator with a sliding magnetic superlattice coated above. By analyzing time-dependent Dirac equations, the dynamics of the zero mode is investigated. When the superlattice's sliding velocity is smaller (larger) than the Fermi velocity of topological insulator, the zero mode is perfectly (imperfectly) pumped. We also propose the application of this setup, which rectifies currents or generates pulse currents. It would provide a prototype of electronic devices based on topological insulator.

In this paper based on the Haldane model, we study the topological insulator with superlattice of pi-fluxes. We find that there exist the mid-gap states induced by the flux-superlattice. In particular, the mid-gap states have nontrivial topological properties, including the nonzero Chern number and the gapless edge states. We derive an effective tight-binding model to describe the topological midgap states and then study the mid-gap states by the effective tight-binding model. The results can be straightforwardly generalized to other two dimensional topological insulators with flux-superlattic…
Gapless Dirac surface states are protected at the interface of topological and normal band insulators. In a binary superlattice bearing such interfaces, we establish that valley-dependent dimerization of symmetry-unrelated Dirac surface states can be exploited to induce topological quantum phase transitions. This mechanism leads to a rich phase diagram that allows us to design strong, weak, and crystalline topological insulators. Our ab initio simulations further demonstrate this mechanism in [111] and [110] superlattices of calcium and tin tellurides.
We consider a system of spinless fermions on the honeycomb lattice with substrate-induced modulated electrostatic potentials tripling the unit cell. The resulting non-Abelian SU(2) gauge fields act cooperatively to realize a quadratic band crossing point (QBCP). Using a combination of mean-field theory and renormalization group techniques, we show that in the QBCP regime, arbitrarily weak repulsive electronic interactions drive the system into the quantum anomalous Hall state. This proves that substrate-induced local voltages are an effective knob to induce the spontaneous formation of a topol…
We study topological phases in Iridium (Ir) oxide superlattices of orthorhombic perovskite-type grown along the [001] crystallographic axis. Due to strong spin-orbit coupling of Ir 5d-orbitals and electronic correlation effects, Ir oxide bilayer superlattices display topological magnetic insulators exhibiting quantized anomalous Hall effects. Depending on stacking of two layers, we also found a valley Hall insulator with counter-propagating edge currents from two different valleys and a topological crystalline insulator with edge states protected by the crystal lattice symmetry. In a single la…

We do a search for topological insulators which are associated with ferromagnetic ordering and show anomalous quantum Hall effect, among transition metal oxide superlattices taking the parent compounds as LaAlO3 and SrTiO3. Among the various superlattices which are studied here, (LaAlO3)10/(LaOsO3)2 exhibits a ferromagnetic ground state with a topologically non-trivial energy gap when a spin-orbit interaction is turned on. The study of transverse conductivity shows that the system has quantized Hall conductivity inside the topological energy gap without applying any external magnetic field. Th…
We propose that the dynamical axion field can be realized in a magnetic topological insulator superlattice or a topological paramagnetic insulator. The magnetic fluctuations of these systems produce a pseudoscalar field which has an axionic coupling to the electromagnetic field, and thus it gives a condensed-matter realization of the axion electrodynamics. Compared to the previously proposed dynamical axion materials where a long range antiferromagnetic order is required, the systems proposed here have the advantage that only a uniform magnetization or a paramagnetic state is needed for the dy…
Moir{é} superlattice realized in two-dimensional heterostructures offers an exciting platform to access strongly-correlated electronic states. In this work, we study transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) Moir{é} superlattices with time-reversal-symmetry and nontrivial spin{/valley}-Chern numbers. Utilizing realistic material parameters and the method of exact diagonalization, we find that at a certain twisting angle and fractional filling, gapped fractional topological states, i.e., fractional Chern insulators, are naturally {stabilized} by simply introducing the Coulomb repulsion. In contras…
As one of paradigmatic phenomena in condensed matter physics, the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) in stoichiometric Chern insulators has drawn great interest for years. By using model Hamiltonian analysis and first-principle calculations, we establish a topological phase diagram and map on it with different two-dimensional configurations, which is taken from the recently-grown magnetic topological insulators MnBi4Te7 and MnBi6Te10 with superlattice-like stacking patterns. These configurations manifest various topological phases, including quantum spin Hall effect with and without time-rev…
It is desirable to realize topological phases in artificial structures by engineering electronic band structures. In this paper, we investigate $(PbTe)_m(SnTe)_{2n-m}$ superlattices along [001] direction and find a robust weak topological insulator phase for a large variety of layer numbers m and 2n-m. We confirm this topologically non-trivial phase by calculating Z2 topological invariants and topological surface states based on the first-principles calculations. We show that the folding of Brillouin zone due to the superlattice structure plays an essential role in inducing topologically non-t…
We study the Metal-Insulator transition in one-dimensional Hubbard superlattices (SL's), modelled by a repeated pattern of repulsive (i.e., positive on-site coupling) and free sites. The evolution of the local moment and of the charge gap (calculated from Lanczos diagonalization of chains up to 18 sites), together with a strong coupling analysis, show that the electron density at which the system is insulating increases with the size of the free layer, relative to the repulsive one. In the insulating state, the mechanism of interaction between fermions separated by a free layer is the analog o…
Periodic stacking of topologically trivial and non-trivial layers with opposite symmetry of the valence and conduction bands induces topological interface states that, in the strong coupling limit, hybridize both across the topological and normal insulator layers. Using band structure engineering, such superlattices can be effectively realized using the IV-VI lead tin chalcogenides. This leads to emergent minibands with a tunable topology as demonstrated both by theory and experiments. The topological minibands are proven by magneto-optical spectroscopy, revealing Landau level transitions both…
We present a promising route to realize spontaneous magnetic order on the surface of a 3D topological insulator by applying a superlattice potential. The superlattice potential creates tunable van Hove singularities, which, when combined with strong spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb repulsion give rise to a topological meron lattice spin texture. The periodicity of this designer meron lattice can be tuned by varying the periodicity of the superlattice potential. We characterize the magnetic order using Ginzburg-Landau theory and show that the magnetic transition temperature reaches experimentall…
The search for new topological materials and states of matter is presently at the forefront of quantum materials research. One powerful approach to novel topological phases beyond the thermodynamic space is to combine different topological/functional materials into a single materials platform in the form of superlattices. However, despite some previous efforts, there has been a significant gap between theories and experiments in this direction. Here, we provide the first detailed set of experimentally-verifiable phase diagrams of topological superlattices composed of archetypal topological ins…

Twisting van der Waals heterostructures to induce correlated many-body states provides a novel tuning mechanism in solid-state physics. In this work, we theoretically investigate the fate of the surface Dirac cone of a three-dimensional topological insulator subject to a superlattice potential. Using a combination of diagrammatic perturbation theory, lattice model simulations, and ab initio calculations we elucidate the unique aspects of twisting a single Dirac cone with an induced moiré potential and the role of the bulk topology on the reconstructed surface band structure. We report a dramat…
We show that superlattices based on zero-gap semiconductors such as graphene and mercury telluride exhibit characteristic Bloch--Zener oscillations that emerge from the coherent superposition of Bloch oscillations and multiple Zener tunneling between the electron and hole branch. We demonstrate this mechanism by means of wave packet dynamics in various spatially periodically modulated nanoribbons subject to an external bias field. The associated Bloch frequencies exhibit a peculiar periodic bias dependence which we explain within a two-band model. Supported by extensive numerical transport cal…
We investigate topological phase transitions driven by interaction and identify a novel topological Mott insulator state in one-dimensional fermionic optical superlattices through numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. Remarkably, the low-energy edge excitations change from spin-1/2 fermionic single-particle modes to spin-1 bosonic collective modes across the phase transition. Due to spin-charge separation, the low-energy theory is governed by an effective spin superexchange model, whereas the charge degree of freedom is fully gapped out. Such topological Mott state can …
We investigate the efficiency of electrical manipulation on two-dimensional topological insulators by considering a lateral potential superlattice on the system. The electronic states under various conditions are examined carefully. It is found that the dispersion of the mini-band and the electron distribution in the potential well region display an oscillatory behavior as the potential strength of the lateral superlattice increases. The probability of finding an electron in the potential well region can be larger or smaller than the average as the potential strength varies. This indicates tha…
Superlattices (SLs) consisted of alternating Bi2Se3 and In2Se3 layers are grown on Si(111) by molecular-beam epitaxy. Bi2Se3, a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), showed good chemical and structural compatibility with In2Se3, a normal band insulator with large energy bandgap. The individual layers in the SLs are very uniform and the hetero-interfaces are sharp. Therefore, such SL structures are potential candidates for explorations of the quantum size effects of TIs.

Mott insulator plays a central role in strongly correlated physics, where the repulsive Coulomb interaction dominates over the electron kinetic energy and leads to insulating states with one electron occupying each unit cell. Doped Mott insulator is often described by the Hubbard model3, which can give rise to other correlated phenomena such as unusual magnetism and even high-temperature superconductivity. A tunable Mott insulator, where the competition between the Coulomb interaction and the kinetic energy can be varied in situ, can provide an invaluable model system for the study of Mott phy…
We study nxn honeycomb superlattices of defects in graphene. The considered defects are missing p_z orbitals and can be realized by either introducing C atom vacancies or chemically binding simple atomic species at the given sites. Using symmetry arguments we show how it is possible to open a gap when n=3m+1,3m+2 (m integer), and estimate its value to have an approximate square-root dependence on the defect concentration x=1/n^2. Tight-binding calculations confirm these findings and show that the induced-gaps can be quite large, e.g. ~100 meV for x~10^{-3}. Gradient-corrected density functiona…
Nontrivial properties of electronic states in topological insulators are inherent not only to the surface and boundary states, but to bound states localized at structure defects as well. We clarify how the unusual properties of the defect-induced bound states are manifested in optical absorption spectra in two-dimensional topological insulators. The calculations are carried out for defects with short-range potential. We find that the defects give rise to the appearance of specific features in the absorption spectrum, which are an inherent property of topological insulators. They have the form …
We study interaction-induced Mott insulators, and their topological properties in a 1D non-Hermitian strongly-correlated spinful fermionic superlattice system with either nonreciprocal hopping or complex-valued interaction. For the nonreciprocal hopping case, the low-energy neutral excitation spectrum is sensitive to boundary conditions, which is a manifestation of the non-Hermitian skin effect. However, unlike the single-particle case, particle density of strongly correlated system does not suffer from the non-Hermitian skin effect due to the Pauli exclusion principle and repulsive interactio…
Studies on two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field first revealed the quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number (C) and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulators with integer QH effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (TLG/hBN) moiré superlattice provides an attractive platform to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moiré minibands with a valley-dependent electrically tunable …
Chalcogenide superlattices (SL), formed by the alternate stacking of GeTe and Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ layers, also referred to as interfacial phase change memory (iPCM), are a leading candidate for spin based memory device applications. Theoretically, the iPCM structure it has been predicted to form a 3D topological insulator or Dirac semimetal depending on the constituent layer thicknesses. Here, we experimentally investigate the topological insulating nature of chalcogenide SLs using a helicity dependent time-resolved Kerr measurement. The helicity dependent Kerr signal is observed to exhibit a fou…
We show that topological defects in quadrupole insulators do not host quantized fractional charges, contrary to what their Wannier representation indicates. In particular, we test the charge quantization hypothesis based on the Wannier representation of a parametric defect and a disclination. Against the expectations, we find that the local charge density decays as $\sim 1/r^2$ with distance, leading to a diverging defect charge. We identify sublattice symmetry and not higher order topology as the origin of the previously reported charge quantization.
We found that non-magnetic defects in two-dimensional topological insulators induce bound states of two kinds for each spin orientation: electron- and hole-like states. Depending on the sign of the defect potential these states can be also of two kinds with different distribution of the electron density. The density has a maximum or minimum in the center. A surprising effect caused by the topological order is a singular dependence of the bound-state energy on the defect potential.
Defects which appear in heterostructure junctions involving topological insulators are sources of gapless modes governing the low energy properties of the systems, as recently elucidated by Teo and Kane [Physical Review B82, 115120 (2010)]. A standard approach for the calculation of topological invariants associated with defects is to deal with the spatial inhomogeneity raised by defects within a semiclassical approximation. In this paper, we propose a full quantum formulation for the topological invariants characterizing line defects in three-dimensional insulators with no symmetry by using t…
Absence of backscattering and occurrence of weak anti-localization are two characteristic features of topological insulators. We find that the introduction of defects results in the appearance of a negative contribution to magnetoresistance in the topological insulator BiSbTeSe2, at temperatures below 50 K. Our analysis shows that the negative magnetoresistance originates from an increase in the density of defect states created by introduction of disorder, which leaves the surface states unaffected. We find a decrease in the magnitude of the negative magnetoresistance contribution with increas…
The gapless surface states of topological insulators (TI) can potentially be used to detect and harvest low-frequency infrared light. Nonetheless, it was shown that significant surface photocurrents due to light with frequency below the bulk gap are rather hard to produce. Here we demonstrate that a periodic magnetic pattern added to the surface dramatically enhances surface photocurrents in TI's. Moreover, the sensitivity of this set-up to the wavelength of the incident light can be optimized by tuning the geometry of the magnetic pattern. The ability to produce substantial photocurrents on T…
Relativistic Dirac fermions are ubiquitous in condensed matter physics. Their mass is proportional to the material energy gap and the ability to control and tune the mass has become an essential tool to engineer quantum phenomena that mimic high energy particles and provide novel device functionalities. In topological insulator thin films, new states of matter can be generated by hybridizing the massless Dirac states that occur at material surfaces. In this work, we experimentally and theoretically introduce a platform where this hybridization can be continuously tuned: the Pb1-xSnxSe topologi…

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) bilayers have recently emerged as a robust and tunable moiré system for studying and designing correlated electron physics. In this work, by combining large-scale first principle calculation and continuum model approach, we provide an electronic structure theory that maps long-period heterobilayer TMD superlattices onto diatomic crystals with cations and anions. We find that the interplay between moiré potential and Coulomb interaction leads to filling-dependent charge transfer between MM and MX regions several nanometers apart. We show that the insulating…
We report on evaluation of lattice thermal conductivity of GeTe/Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ superlattice (SL) by using femtosecond coherent phonon spectroscopy at various lattice temperatures. The time-resolved transient reflectivity obtained in amorphous and crystalline GeTe/Sb$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ SL films exhibits the coherent $A_{1}$ optical modes at terahertz (THz) frequencies with picoseconds dephasing time. Based on the Debye theory, we calculate the lattice thermal conductivity, including scattering by grain boundary and point defect, umklapp process, and phonon resonant scattering. The results indicate…
The physics of oxide superlattices is considered for pristine (001) multilayers of the band insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 with alternating p and n interfaces. First principles results and a model of capacitor plates offer a simple paradigm to understand their dielectric properties and the insulator to metal transition (IMT) at interfaces with increasing layer thickness. The charge at insulating interfaces is found to be as predicted from the formal ionic charges, not populations. Different relative layer thicknesses produce a spontaneous polarization of the system, and allow manipulation of the…
We demonstrate theoretically the coexistence of Dirac semimetal and topological insulator phases in InSb/$α$-Sn conventional semiconductor superlattices, based on advanced first-principles calculations combined with low-energy $k\cdot p$ theory. By proper interfaces designing, a large interface polarization emerges when the growth direction is chosen along {[}111{]}. Such an intrinsic polarized electrostatic field reduces band gap largely and invert the band structure finally, leading to emerge of the topological Dirac semimetal phase with a pair of Dirac nodes appearing along the (111) crysta…
The moiré superlattice formed by ABC stacked trilayer graphene aligned with a hexagonal boron nitride substrate (TG/h-BN) provides an interesting system where both the bandwidth and the topology can be tuned by an applied perpendicular electric field $D$ . Thus the TG/h-BN system can simulate both Hubbard model physics and nearly flat Chern band physics within one sample. We derive lattice models for both signs of $D$ (which controls the band topology) separately through explicit Wannier orbital construction and mapping of Coulomb interaction. When the bands are topologically trivial, we discu…
In search of materials with three-dimensional flat band dispersions, using {\em ab-initio} computations, we investigate how topological phases evolve as a function of hydrostatic pressure and uniaxial strain in two types of superlattices: HgTe/CdTe and HgTe/HgSe. In short-period HgTe/CdTe superlattices, our analysis unveils the presence of isoenergetic nodal lines, which could host strain-induced three-dimensional flat bands at the Fermi level without requiring doping, when fabricated, for instance, as core-shell nanowires. In contrast, HgTe/HgSe short-period superlattices are found to harbor …
